This game is pure perfection. Everything is done masterfully. It has the best characters I ever saw on any kind of media, the art style is the best one I saw, the soundtrack is perfect, and the story is divine. It's the best ps4 exclusive, by a mile, and also the best game I played (tying with p5r, p5s, p5d, p3d, p3fes and p4g). Yeah, I really love this franchise.

    - character interaction is dragged out and uninspired towards the end
    - some members of the cast are forgotten and even turned into caricatures
    - difficulty is either laughably easy or insanely hard with just damage numbers being super high or super low
    - it mentions important real life issues yet is afraid to actually tackle them, using them as bait
    - dialogue is easily skippable, especially text messages and constant repetition of deadlines and "are we going to be okay" lines

It does everything else that it tries to amazingly well:
    - Gameplay is top notch, fun and satisfying, puts a lot of turn based games to shame
    - Characters are unique and diverse while useful, allowing you to play with your favorites freely
    - Customization of demons and skills is through the roof
    - All palaces are interesting and unique, even the most uninspired ones
    - Almost all social confidants, and the variety of them, will give people something to look forward to after the fighting is over
    - Over 80 hours of content, more if you shoot towards the platinum trophy, reaching around 150
    - The soundtrack is phenomenal (albeit overplayed by content creators), everything from relaxing music, pensive music, fighting music and character themes are executed flawlessly, giving a superb flair of style while also making it feel like a game and not an anime

I could go on, and I'll surely remember other good points about this game. It's a must buy for rpg fans, jrpg fans, and turn-based fans.

How much it impacted me throughout my teenage years and helped me with my struggles? How it expanded my horizons and introduced me to JRPGs, some of my favorite games, Anime and Japanese Culture?... The characters I met in this game, they felt real and very relatable in many ways, they gave me a place to stay and I felt like I belonged somewhere. The things they all go through really hit me right in the feels, I cheered for them and their motivation to keep going forward and I wanted them to succeed because I was a part of them. Now, for the story, the game touches some very serious and dark themes such as abusing the weak, depression & insecurities, greed for power, anthropology and how humans think & act, carving your own path in society, making your dreams come true by achieving them and not giving up, which in my eyes is one of the most compelling & deep stories I've ever experienced. Personally this game really helped me with my social anxiety and gave me the motivation to escape from it, as someone who just became an adult, I finally have a goal in my life. Enough for the story, let's talk about the flawless combat system, which in my opinion is the most advanced turn based game I've ever experienced, from the very satisfying and fast paced combat mechanics to the masterfully crafted animations, this is a very enjoyable game even for those who aren't into turn based games. As for the social simulator aspect, it's my favorite part of the game, bonding with the characters and experiencing their stories, helping them with their problems, gaining new abilities that enhance the combat mechanics, you can definitely see the effort that was put into the game. I also want to talk about the super stylish animations which are very charming & exciting to look at, the art style is the best I've ever seen period, no other game has such style as this one, from the Showtimes, All-Out Attacks, and special abilities to the menus, everything looks absolutely stunning, and even the in-game animations share this "comic book" art style that fits perfectly into the game, aswell as for the music, which is easily the best soundtrack I've ever heard, not a single song that I don't like, I literally listen to the game's music everyday, it became a part of my life. I think this is everything I wanted to say about this masterpiece of a videogame, it's a very long, emotional & unforgettable journey. Expand

Persona 5 is a mix of a visual novel high school and a turn based “dungeon” crawler RPG… doesn’t seem very exciting but it’s one of the best games of this generation. But how does such an uninteresting premise makes for such a great experience? I’ll try to explain

It’s hard to pinpoint why Persona 5 is so good as a lot of factors have a role, first of all and most obvious: the story. If I had to summarize why the narrative is so engaging I would simply say “It’s because it’s a Japanese story”; the game doesn’t shy away of dealing with some heavy stuff: first chapter has a girl attempting suicide over being sexually harassed by her PE teacher, can you ever see something like that flying in an American studio game? H*ll no! The game has a distinct anime humor mixed with some pretty serious stuff from time to time, as a result you never know what’s around the corner and the narrative surprises you every step in the way. The dialogues follow along as they are never boring. There is always a joke, an unexpected moment… there is always something different to keep you going.

The characters really steal the show as their psyche is diverse both in the main roster as well in the side characters that you meet. Each one has a personality, a goal, a behavior that make them unique. You can roughly encounter 2 characters per day to make their story move forward, granted most of the times you’re gonna select the one that benefits you the most gameplay wise but I’m pretty sure players went with their preferred character from time to time.

Now let’s talk about the dungeon RPG sections: the Palaces.

This might be the only turn based combat that I really liked. It all comes down to your Skill Points or SP (like the Magic Points – MP – in every RPG) since the game is VERY STINGY with SP recovery items so it is all about managing this resource, playing in Hard Mode makes for a better experience in this regard. The most reliable way to recover SP is calling it a day, but you have a deadline to finish the Palace so the ideal is to make the most of each day in other words making the most of your SP as they are integral to the fights for using the Personas.

Personas are basically Stands (was that a JoJo reference?). Each character in your party has a Persona and each one of them is specialized in an element; so basically a good character is determined by how good is their Persona. The main character Joker, however, can host a bunch of Personas so feel free to customize your team as you see fit; if you’re feeling underpowered you can fuse them together culminating in even stronger Personas and this is the best thing ever! There are so many and their designs are so awesome and diverse that you’ll be changing your team every time you can

The enemies you fight are called Shadows but they always materialize in, you guessed: Personas. Most of them have an elemental weakness, exploiting it grants you a bonus turn (One More) that can be chained and it also downs the enemy, if all of them are down you can make an All-Out Attack for massive damage or engage in a negotiation to finish the battle earlier and even obtain the said Persona. If you go for the latter you gain less experience points however by finishing the battle earlier you save some SP, so here enters your management.

The Palaces are huge so don’t expect to finish them in an in-game day alone. They have also some puzzle mechanics of sort and here is where the game should be better as I would love to see this enhanced. I’m not saying the game should have like Zelda puzzles or something… actually scratch that! That would’ve been awesome! Why games don’t rip off Zelda?
What I’m trying to say is: make better puzzles and make them more prevalent. Making the Palaces more action oriented would be a dream too - instead of climbing when the X button prompt appears give the players the liberty to do so and figure out things for their selves.

I don’t think I need to say he obvious about the awesome anime graphical style so I’d like to focus on an aspect that’s been dying in modern gaming: the music. Much of the experience is enhanced by it as each Palace has a different incredible theme. A battle theme music with lyrics? Yup, Persona manages to pull it off splendidly! The song of the final fight (Rivers in the Desert) is so amazing I put in my playlist. Still in the audio department: a huge shout-out to the voice actors (I played in English) as this is THE BEST voice acting I’ve seen in a game; particularly for Ann and Ryuji actors.

Persona 5 sure is a slow burner and it’s a different game. I remember hating it my first try ditching it in the first Palace; I returned one year later with another mentality and didn’t want the game to end. So some patience is required until it clicks but is a game worth giving a shot (but buy Persona 5 Royal instead since it adds another chapter and more Personas)

One of the most disappointing games I've ever played. I'm glad this was free, I just wish I hadn't spent my time on it. I'm not even going to point out the redeeming qualities of this game given that it has 4,350 positive reviews (and only 500 negative). If you ask the fans, it's the best rpg ever, the best atlus game, and it's nearly perfect. I couldn't disagree more.

P5 is an over-stylized, highly polished game completely lacking in substance, real style, challenge, or fun. Though it teases you with a vast overworld and hints of interesting combat, what you will get instead is countless hours of hand-holding, pure repetition, monotony, and bad writing. The game consists of nothing more than tacky visual novel storytelling, tedious time management, and the most repetitive combat gameplay I have ever experienced.

Combat in p5 consists of using a barely functioning stealth system which is nothing but flashy button prompts to enter into 'fights'. 'Fights' go as follows: You hit their weak point, they fall down. You hit their weak point, they fall down. Once every enemy falls down, you use a group attack. This is >90% of the fighting, which is the only real gameplay in P5.

Aesthetically, the game looks and sounds nice at first, but you will soon realize you've been listening to the same bad attempts at jazz/funk on repeat for the last lifetime while Morgana has been yelling at you every five seconds, as they do the entire game. You will watch the same boring animations over and over and over and over while listening to the same underwhelming, and frankly bad music over and over and over. The worlds look great, the characters look nice (except Panther), the fighting is flashy, but by the time you've completed the first dungeon you will have seen/heard pretty much everything there is to see/hear well over a hundred times. Now get ready to repeat this entire cycle countless more times.

Okay, so the sound and visuals are repetitive, and the combat is boring and not challenging, and Morgana is annoying. Surely the amazing story makes up for this? Well, let's talk about the 'story'.

P5 starts strong with a clear theme which is reinforced by everything around you. You are trapped, imprisoned. The world around you restricts you and the main positive force in this world is 'the spirit of rebellion' with which you reclaim your spirit and fight against these literal and metaphorical shackles.

Sounds awesome, right? Yes, well, you will not hear about any of this again. Sadly this great idea and theme, which is even used as a visual theme in the interrogation room and the velvet room, is not actually part of the story at all. Instead it drops into the very loose concept of 'phantom thieves' which is ultimately nothing more than the exact same formula you'd expect from other persona titles. High schoolers, bad guy, psychic world, bla bla bla. Any interesting story arcs are suffocated under gags, overly drawn out sequences, and the pure monotony of the game.

P5 is also sorely lacking in nuance, depth, and taste. Do you enjoy long hallways of busts of schoolgirls in tight, small outfits? Do you like hour long gags about the hypersexualized literal 'catgirl' character being forced to take all her clothes off? Well, I don't. And it's sad to see such awful creative decision making undermine this story just like they did in P4. Cheap gags, shallowness, and cliches pervade and infest the world of P5, but there is no rebellion against these distortions because it's just the nature of this trite storytelling.

Perhaps there is something good buried under hundreds of hours of Morgana yelling the exact same voices lines at you and controlling everything you do, being forced into 100% linear gameplay for most of the game, and doing the exact same combat cycles with literally the exact same button combinations for entire dungeons. In fact, I'm sure there is. Maybe I'll watch the cutscenes on youtube or something, because I'm not finishing this profoundly boring timesink of a visual novel which people are calling a game.

Best JRPG there is. Sets the barrier high on how an JRPG should be these days. If there is a single thing to complain about, then its the missing fast forward button sometimes I cannot skip some dialogues fast enough, what can be tiresome when you played to game through a couple oft times.

    - bland dialogue between characters
    - some characters are introduced too late to finish their social links or for them to fully have a character arc
    - cheesy story. i would be pretty indifferent to it but there is this one line which morgana says towards the end of the final boss which just completely changed my view on it. you know it when you hear it; its cringey af.
    - *slight spoiler about how something is not really that important but is made out to be*
the whole morgana running away part did not have the intended effect at all and just seemed like a cheap way to introduce Haru. felt really random and out of character for him.
    - game does take quite a while to take off honestly. personally i found the first few hours kind of boring
    - due to the sheer length of the game, its hard to revisit. personally i love short and concise games, and i find that i am much more likely to revisit them, even if there is no need to. as much as i would like to replay persona 5, i doubt i will for a very long time. i finished the game in around 80 hours, which is slightly quicker than the 100 that most people have said to have beat the game in, but even then 80 hours is not something i would want to throw away into a game i have already played. also i played this game a couple of years ago, this is all from memory. i really do not want to spend another 80 hours playing this, despite it being a good game.

Another positive point in my opinion is the whole social part of the game, The daily life of Joker by itself is already very entertaining even without the whole phantom thieves and metaverse stuff, while playin I was way more exited when there was a new event with one of my favorite confidants than when I was infiltrating a Palace. Also the way the social stats are a really nice feature and honestly being able to ace a test with my maxed out knowledge was one of the best feelings the game gave me, even though I had almost no effort doing it.
This brings me to the last aspect of the game that made it hard to bear towards the end, the combat. In the first 50 or so hours I was really enjoying the combat system but because the game is so long (100hrs approximately) I started to grow weary of it given that there isn't much action since it's turn-based. In the last section of the game Is pretty much pure combat and I almost dropped it there due to the simple fact that I just couldn't handle it anymore, every battle lasted for more than 30 minutes and I didn't feel good after finishing them because I was already fed up with battles, especially when some enemies just heal 100% of their health just as you're about to land that last strike.
Overall, in my opinion, Persona is a good game, but you need to be really patient in order to play it to the end.

Character building, and synergistic party abilities and combat are what i look for in a good rpg. I play most games for the story, but i still need a healthy amount of gameplay. In Persona 5 the gameplay is buried so deep down that you only get to it every 15 min, and it lasts only 5 min at a time.

    Nota: 9.0/10

Persona 5 does such an exeptional job in so many areas that it feels sad to give it anything other than 10, but I have to, simply because the story and characters are above everything else in jrpgs for me. There is a ton of text in the script here, but it doesn't translate into vivid, emotional experience.

Persona paints beatiful picture, but it paints it with style, brave (but smart!)

There is a ton of text in the script here, but it doesn't translate into vivid, emotional experience.

Persona paints beatiful picture, but it paints it with style, brave (but smart!) use of colors, themes, transitions, it does try to be clever or funny with its text, but more often than not it doesn't work all that well, perhaps the translation is weak, but I don't think it should take all the blame.

And for every thing it executes with brillance, you can find it equally as boring and unimaginative at times. For example: every single time you make a new social link, you get the scene with your interrogator asking you about said connection, it's boring, always the same and serves little purpose other than reminding you about that part of the narrative, you literally know what's going to happen and what will be said, is there any worse sin in a storytelling?
Not enough for you? How about Morgana telling you that need to sleep almost every evening, pissing you off because you wanted to actually do something with your time (this is largely fixed in the Royal).

Exploration kind of begs for a bit more too, interaction is limited and areas are usually very small.
Huge part of dialog choices contains literally three versions of what is essentially the same statement.
Well, there is a lot stuff like that.

But Persona 5 still managed to steal my heart.
I can't recall any game with more style.
Music is fantastic, batlles are fun and its easy to sink in this world for long hours.
Maybe that's the problem too, Persona wants to be as long as possible and it certainly manages to do that. The question is, does it compromise on the quality because of that? I think it does.

If you never played it, I would pick Royal edition, it adds a lot of neat things and about the only con I can thing of is that it seems less challenging, but that's only because you have so many options to improve here.

That leap of faith made me fall in love with the character and game all in one fell swoop. 100 Hours worth the playtime every minute of gameplay i offered to give. Along with that the offer of bonding with the characters both main and side allows multiple playthroughs and opportunities to make each experience different and unique along with having detailed backstories for each character. My only gripe with the game is that sometimes once after you finish changing the heart of your target it becomes a sorta slow since most would finish the dungeon at a fast pace. But other then that the game, soundtrack, enemies and bosses make this a playthrough you want to enjoy. This is on my highly recommendation list. Also to anyone seeing this please look at the 0 review referring to the pervert character. Apparently he was offended by that one character that lead to him not finishing the game, I'll ask someone from meta to take that down as that's a review bomb. Expand

    Good

    - the sae flash forwards are cool way to tell story

    - the story behind futaba wanting her heart changed makes me feel the phantom thieves were real, cause I could use a heart change myself. This allowed me to relate to the game on a deeper level

    - there's a certain appeal and humor to leveling up skills doing random normal daily things like answering questions in class or crafting lock picks or eating a huge burger challenge.

    - the Japanese locations are well done. Good replication of the real places.

    - I love the foul language the characters use, like ryuji. It makes the chars feel organic.

    - the mental symbolism behind each palace based on what the villain perceives their world is interesting to see. Like ATMs for people kaneshiro sees. And art pieces of madarame's students. And kamoshida's view of Ann. It makes me think about what my palace would look like, and the way I view others would be symbolized in my own palace.

    - the music is awesome

    - the characters are diverse and interesting.

    - by the end of it, I felt like I knew the characters personally. It's like I knew them for a life time. This was one positive thing that came out of the insane amount of cutscenes and dialogue.

    - despite the game feeling it was dragged on during the middle, the ending was absolutely beautiful, and it wouldn't have been so had the game not been so long. I really felt like a journey. An adventure. As if I've made a group of long lasting friends.

    Bad

    - too much dialogue. When **** goes down, it's fine. But when nothing's going on, it's tedious going through it.

    - it's very hard to fuse the personas required by the twins because if the persona needed isn't on my list, I would need to spend yen to withdraw it just to see what the fusion result is, then toss it away to withdraw the personas I had on my list originally. This is so inconvenient to the point where I absolutely needed to refer to a guide.

    - sometimes RNG can just completely f*** you over. There was one time I got ambushed, one of the enemies inflicted rage on my whole party, so I couldn't heal, and the enemy just wiped me out in two turns. There was literally nothing I could do to save the situation the moment I got to ambushed.

    - it's unclear when you should spend time with a confidant. The game says bond Wong deepen, so does that mean I shouldn't request them? It's unclear what I should do

    - there's a lot of unnecessary dialogue. Like when grabbing an item in dungeons, some other party members always have to chime in with a completely useless comment, like oh look it's a treasure chest when I clearly see it, or maybe we should try to press this button, when I obviously will press it already.

    - the character animations aren't exactly ground breaking. The characters are standing there talking 95% of the time, making the cutscenes visually boring. MGS is known to have a crap ton of cutscenes too but at least you get to enjoy high quality animations, which makes it more interesting.

    - the negotiations are way too vague. The answers are terribly ambiguous.

    - it sucks that I can't angle the camera freely while running in one direction. This makes scouting for enemies around me while moving difficult

It's not perfect and it isn't in my all time top PS4 games but Persona 5 is an excellent JRPG that you will have fun with for the best part of 80-100 hours (that's before you consider a new game plus as well). Persona 5 is a fantastic JRPG. It is full of character and from the first hour it had already "Stolen my Heart"! (Sorry...)

best JRPG I have ever played. the turn-based combat is excellent best sounds track of any video game ever. a must-play, the persona series is great but 5 takes it to new heights. any flaws this game might have are minor compared to its overall excellence. It has tons of gameplay taking 100 hours roughly to complete and over 120 to do everything the game has to offer.

    Pros:
    1. Great art style and general presentation. Personas and dungeons have great, unique designs.
    2. Core gameplay loop is satisfying with the mixture of dungeon crawling, fusion, and high school sim. 3. Decent story and characters that pushes plot ahead and good value for money as main story is easily 70+ hours. Cons: 1. Standard JRPG style dialogue and character trope. Occasionally

    1. Standard JRPG style dialogue and character trope. Occasionally some very corny dialogue.
    2. Gameplay can get quite repetitive and story quality drops off in the second half of the game.

Overall, a good game that I would Definitely recommend to fans of JRPGs and RPGs but people that do not like anime or JRPG style writing should be more cautious.

Finished the game for almost 250hrs. I dont like the ending compare to 4. i dont like the story compare to 4 and i dont like the battle mechanics compare to 4. particularly when your persona is summoned in this game, it appears as shadow and after it attacks it disappears. Unlike 4, when summoned its a new character appearing and battling in the game.

Wow, just Wow. I never Thought a game so dialogue heavy and story driven could get me so attached. I’ve always been more of “Not too Many cutscenes, more action and gameplay” Type of person, but something’s just different about Persona 5. I love every single second of it, the story, the characters, the turn-based combat. It all just comes together so perfect. Im 50 hours in which is onlyWow, just Wow. I have played this game after release and I am considering the time it came out and the current price it is sold at. This game being so cheap honestly makes it an amazing value and the price would be my biggest reason I would recommend this over p5r but if you do have the money p5r is like a semi remaster with a little more content that should've been cheaper. Definitely a bit cheesy at time imo but nothing to ruin the game overall, very solid and if you cant pickup Royal then do pick up this one for sure. Expand

Persona 5 is an absolutely amazing game that convinces with its art style, music and story. It has anything one could ask for such a game and more. The turn-based battle system offers a wide array of opportunities. While it may not be everyone's cup of tea, it is definitely recommended to give it a go.

Persona 5 beats every other turn-based RPG in terms of production values, combat, story, symbolics, character design, music, pace and variety. 2017 is a great year for gaming and Persona 5 confirms this with a load of unmatched swagger.
