No Man's Sky is a game that will go down in history; not because it's good, but because there has never been a game that has been this disappointing. No, really; I can't think of a single game that was missing so many advertised features on launch.

But, let me start off with the positives. When you start up to game and explore your first planet, it's a magical experience. You find all of these minerals and see these goofy animals and plants, and you just have a generally good time. The ambient music is very well made, along with most of the in-game sounds. The system for learning to understand alien languages is really cool too. But as soon as you begin to really get into the game, you'll realize that there is something fundamentally wrong with it.

Every planet you go to hardly differs from the other ones you visit. Almost every single planet has nearly the exact same resources. The buildings you find are carbon copies of each other, and you'll start recognizing patterns in the animals ridiculously fast. Then, there's the space stations. You'd think they'd be bustling hubs of business with plenty of space-faring life to interact with. There is literally ONE actual alien in them. You can talk to the various space pilots in their ships, but you can't actually see them outside interacting with each other. The big freighter ships that are in the game don't move, and you can't pilot them. The various ship types that Murray emphasized are nearly null and void; you just look for the one with the biggest inventory, no matter what. Another thing Murray talked about was landing on asteroids, which you can NOT do!

And then there's the factions. They're basically worthless and your ties to them don't do anything to benefit you. You don't get ships to guard you from pirates while navigating the galaxy, or unique parts to attach to your ship; they're just, there. And this wouldn't be such a problem if there was actual multiplayer! And the "Sean Murray said you would probably never find another player!" excuse doesn't defend them NOT INCLUDING IT.

The life on planets does not get crazier and more mutated as Murray said. There's no brontosaurus creatures or dune worms; and the large animals in the game don't have their animation speed scaled correctly. Almost every animal in the game looks off.

And yes, I understand the Hello Games is a small team. But the fact of the matter is that they were backed by Sony. **** SONY! They knew that people would expected most of these features in the game, but yet they refused to Let Sony increase their team! And on top of that, Sean Murray back over his statement about the game not having paid DLC! Everything surrounding this game is shady, and I feel like we've been cheated out of what could have been the best game of all time.

The idea of a vast universe waiting to be explored with billions upon billions of planets to be explored is a captivating marketing tool, and certainly a wonderful feat achieved by No Man's Sky. It would always have been a challenge to fill those planets with unique quests. Instead all planets have outposts, monoliths, transmission towers, and drop pods which have rewards such as increasing your knowledge of an alien language, giving you better equipment, or finding a crashed ship that may have one more inventory than your own! (Excited yet?) Yes the designers try to vary the dialogue in each one of these encounters, but it is lacking since you are basically doing the same thing on every planet. As for rewards, mid way through play through you already have most of them so you end up getting rewards that you already have, hence rending the whole endeavour pointless. You can shoot things to get minerals which you can trade or use to upgrade equipment, but after 4 hrs it all starts to feel rather pointless. I mean do you need a 48 slot ship with fully upgraded mining tools and cannons to reach the Center of the universe?Unsurprisingly , the answer is no. So why spend hours upon hours hunting for rare minerals, trading with generic aliens at space ports, and continuously gather materials to fuel your space ship?

The other aspect of this game that seems to be a paradox is the exploration and discovery concept. Why discover things when the chance of anyone finding your discovery (or even caring) is close to nil? As for finding all animals on a planet and categorising them shouldn't even be considered as gameplay, not in a 60 dollar game that is anyway.

In a nutshell this game tries to utilise the romantic concept of space exploring and banked on that being enough for people to remain captivates. However when it comes down to it, space exploration is boring and tedious. The game doesn't excel in any particular field. First person shooting? Cumbersome. Intergalactic trade? limited and un-dynamic. Starship battles? incomplete. Story? partially there but lacks any serious drive except for the obsessive compulsive dead bent on reaching the center. Mining? A means to an end, that has no end.

If the designers state this game is for a niche market than it should be priced accordingly. So much could have been added, yet their defence is a small team. Here is a bright idea then, no need for quintillion planets!

    A suggestion for how it could have been better;

    1. More customisable space ships ( including ability to change color and design)
    2. Improved FPS capabilities and improved combat
    3. Reduction in planets
    4. Addition of varied quests
    5. Faster dialogue during conservations with aliens!!!!!
    6. Improve space ship combat dynamics
    7. Ability to have PVP multiplayer in starships
    8. purchasing starship cargo vessels for trade and transport
    9. Stat counters to compare with other players across the globe ( how many animals planets discovered, minerals gathered, etc)

Those are just 9 thought of on the spot, I'm sure there are many other points that could be done.

About a week before launch a saw a walkthrough video from the guy that "leaked" it on Youtube and found myself somewhat interested. So I thought I'd give it a go... and ironically, it got it's claws into me.

It was so completely different from most games I play, I found myself fixed on finding "what was around the next corner" (or next galaxy in this case).

But that intrigue will only last so long before everything starts to feel very much the same. Saying that, it gave me about 40-50 hours before I decided to stop - making sure I was still in a "happy place" with my experience.

And that was the key for me - low expectations, and knowing when I'd had enough.

Another big influence for me was the sound design... amazing! It drew me in and really gave weight and scale to the whole thing.

Don't pay full price, but definitely give it a go and some point.

interesting lore, as you learn about the history of what happened in the past and how the galaxy came to be.

    issues with the game:
UI and some game mechanics needs improving: ( need shortcuts and hotkeys to make life easier)
better waypoint system needed for planets and the interstellar travel ( devs confirmed this is in the works)

We see lots of people saying the planets are repetitive and not variate enough. Well, we knew that when they said it would have infinite planets, a company could either make some planets and work hard to make them very different or make millions that look kind of the same. Either way, I'm impressed with the diversity overall and the outstanding achievement of this indie company. I wish more companies could pitch ideas like this into the comunity and actually have incentive from the people to keep doing so.

Sadly, this kind of public reaction we see towards No Man's Sky will negatively impact the creative game makers and big companies, holding them towards safer and (ironically) repetitive ideas that seem to be widely accepted.

My overall experience with the game has been positive and entertaining. It's a game I can always sit and enjoy while listening to podcasts, music or even the amazing soundtrack it has.

There are some terrible reviews on here, but if you already made it to the center of the universe in a week, the game clearly isn't for you... It's like going to Yellowstone & trying to make it to the other side of the park as fast as possible. Why bother going if you aren't interested in seeing the sights?

And there is a good story- you just have to eek it out. I learned over 100 words (as you don't understand alien languages of course) before even bothering leaving my first system- which meant hours and hours of slowly learning a species history through visiting various locations etc. And that changed the shape of the game for me, and my goals. it is slow though, and the resource grind is repetitive, but that should be known to everyone already, it's a little like Minecraft. Only different.

Without spoiling anything No Man's Sky's ending leaves a bitter taste in the players mouth making all of their hard work feel meaningless. That being said the journey to get to that ending is where the true game exists. Encountering new alien species, finding resources throughout one of the quintillions of randomly generated planets, and even spaceship combat. Where No Man's Sky succeeds is also where it unfortunately falters. Early exploration feels exciting and new, but upon further inspection becomes repetitious at best. Planets begin to feel like nothing more than re-skinned color pallets of ones that came before, and new animals you discover rarely differ much from ones you've seen already. That being said No Man's Sky is still an enjoyable game, albeit a little buggy at times, and with it's faults I never found myself regretting the purchase. This game may not be the experiences you are looking for if you wish to experience it with friends, or if you want an amazingly told story. It is, however, a game worth investing in if you enjoy a sense of discovery and making your own adventures. Expand

Graphically, stunning - not realistic, but graphically stunning (especially when in your ship).

Audio - simply mind blowing. Best played with a good set of headphones, for sure!

Those things are fantastic, until I sat down and did the maths of how many times the game crashed (with the 1.03 patch, mind you) when I entered warp - a staggering 25-30% crash rate!

Do you like fast paced shooters, lots of RPG elements and interactions with NPC's with branching dialogue? Yes? I do as well but No Man's Sky doesn't exactly have much if any of these elements.

After my 3 days of gameplay I'm still in my starting solar system, yet to venture out into the wider galaxy, so what are my impressions....

Planets I've visited in the main are varied (hot to freezing cold, empty to packed full of life). As I'm still in the same solar system I'm not expecting to see massive variation in animals but I have been surprised by a small world I'm on now and how much life and variation of life there is.

NMS has very little if any hand holding, you are on your own in this universe after all and the game (for the most part) leaves it to you to decide what to do when, in what order and to work out how to do it.

Sunsets, vistas etc can look stunning,

The day night cycle in my opinion comes around to quickly but I guess that may vary dependent on planet and spin speed?

The lights (for night time exploration) on your Exo suit are naff and light up about half a meter in front of you .
So far I've established that one of the NPC races hate the sentinels which are AI/robots that patrol the universe, there's lots to do if you want to farm minerals, trade, explore planets, learn alien languages.

However as much as I'm enjoying it I would say....

If you only have 30-60min to play this is not the game for you. you need at least a couple of hours to get anywhere per game play.

While I'm enjoying the exploration and options to do what I want, trade, steal cargo etc. at the moment from what I've experienced this could become repetitive further down the line.

I'm not sure what this universe has in store for me but I'm eager to find out.

Recommended but it's not for everyone ( I prefer this to Fallout 4 though)

I tried to defend this game at first but its just so unfinished that I can't, this is still a fair review and here are a list of pros ans cons

    cons:
-The space stations are terrible. If they were going to randomly generate stuff they could have done it to the space stations as well, they are all the same, they are so empty despite being the size of the death star, with only two rooms to "explore" and one alien working there.

-There are only three different alien races, infinite number of retarded looking animals yet they only made three different types of alien, I don't even know why they bothered, there is no difference between the aliens except their heads. There's no backstory or conflict between the races.

-There's no cities or villages, they could have made some sort of undeveloped/savage aliens that lives in mudhuts or tee-pees or something, or some sort of villages with bars and shops or even big alien cities, instead you get the same looking buildings through out the universe with only ONE goddamn alien every time, and when ships lands at a trading post or something no one gets out, they just wait 10 seconds and fly off, giving the game a look of lifelessness.

-The random animals are terrible, they do nothing except walk around, they don't hunt or drink or eat or sleep. Seeing an animal is a big thing actually cause they're so rare, and seeing a big one is even more rare. I have yet to see two or more different types of animal in the same place.

-The inventory system is terrible, the fact that upgrades take up space is ridiculous, not to mention the fact that you run out of space in about 10 minutes.
You find all these blueprint for upgrades you're never going to use because they take up space and are useless.

-The planets are very samey, very barren, very empty, there are no jungles or tall mountains or crevasses or volcanoes or geysers, just the same rocky landscape every time, with a different danger like radiation or heat or cold or toxins but it makes no difference, your shield absorbs it all and you just have to mine more to keep it going.
And it's not like finding materials is hard, fuel is everywhere, is not a commodity you have to refine or buy or use sparingly, it's EVERYWHERE and very easy to get.

    - Space battles are extremely easy and dull, even if you do die there are no real consequences, just fly back to your grave and pick up all your stuff, you even have a way-point showing you where you died.
The big spaceships you see are pointless, you cant land inside them or explore them or hijack them, you can just attack them and probably get killed by sentinels.

-The game is marketed as survival. This is false there is no aspect of survival, no hunger or thirst or need for shelter. You can wander around for hours just refueling your suit and you won't die.

-The worst thing in this game is that it's so easy, but this is a sort of paradox: surviving, collecting resources, getting money is all very easy, but the end goal is pointless, there is no real motivation to get to the center, so it makes it difficult to want to play it.

    Pros:
I struggled to find these cause I want to give this game a fair review.

+The planets look pretty from in space (especially if you're on a moon).

+If you like to look at randomly generated stuff, you'll like it.

    +Black holes look cool.

But that's it. I'll admit this game was a victim of hype but the way it was marketed was extremely deceptive, they showed scripted things that you would never find in the game. Without even mentioning the lack of multiplayer this game is still terrible, and multiplayer/ co-op drop in aspect could have saved the game.
But this game is by no means worth the 60$ price tag.

I've warped over 30 times, met 40 odd aliens and been through black holes but I've got no reason to keep going, I know that the next 30 times I warp will produce the same result, I'll end up gathering the same 3 or 4 resources on a planet just to warp the next, there is nothing left for me to see or do here in under 20 hours of play time.

The game has potential, but the limitation ruins it. Every planet looks the same, apart from the colour schemes. The whole gameplay evolves around flying your ship and spamming 'C' to scan. The menus are unclear, the textures are 10 years behind, and the overall experience fades away after 2 hours, when you see all the linearity.

The controls are a bit odd but after just a few minutes of playing you get used to them and find they work very well.

The survival aspect is there for those who want to venture off away from their ship and is avoidable enough to be a background feature for those that don't want it with room for everything in between.

Space combat starts off all fingers and thumbs but, again, once you have played it for an hour or so and have accumulated more than 5 minutes of space combat you get the feel for it and it is a very enjoyable experience.

Graphics wise it is excellent! Bar a view-drawing distance that can't be changed I cannot fault the visuals especially considering the variety. Though it is obvious that it is like lego with set pieces that can be put together by the procedural generation and that more parts are needed to help stave off the feeling of "this looks similar".

The game has its issues, glitches, bugs, crashes and balance issues in some areas. But this was to be expected. Since the days of games spending 5 years in development are gone, with most if not all the of the made up time being spent on QA this is just the way of things now and we have only ourselves (the consumer) to blame. Hello Games has responded by hiring a massive support team and new head of QA with a new ticketing system starting Monday the 15th of August and are already hard at work on patches and workarounds along with FREE DLC.

    In conclusion:
This game is a simple, chill game that I have already sunk 20 hours into and I don't see me slowing down anytime soon. It is an uncomplicated game that allows the escapist in me to zone out from my world and just fly, shoot, mine, explore and even try and discover the story...its there, just hidden a bit too deep for most people to be bothered to find.

The game was over hyped and those who feel disappointed have to realise that the speculation of some fan blogs and even the odd periodical could never have been realised by a developer this small.

Well done Hello Games, now fix those issues, get me my DLC!

Imagine my surprise to find out this is the exact same game story albeit with better attributes. Anyone who has played "out there" will recognize the story set up and paths and what not, the inventory layout especially and even ship designs to some degree have made appearances here. Now this isn't necessarily a negative point as out there is a pretty decent game for a text based adventure. Its more like "this is the game that "out there" should have or could have or would have been under different circumstance". It also has a lot of aspects of games like "Galaxy on Fire" for space shipping and trading. The game does get repetitive but don't all games at some point? It certainly has its flaws and drawbacks but Im 15-20 hours in and still excited to get back into it each night after work. I can't believe the negative reviews for this game...but I think many gamers (especially young ones) expect every game to be released exactly how they want it. This is wrong, and if you followed the game over the last year or so, you would have not been disappointed.

The game is exactly what it is supposed to be...and many of the complaints are because of the repetitive grind (for resources and storage slots). While I could have done without the grind for resources, this is typical of many games. So what...grind through the first 10-15 hours, then start exploring the rarer planets (green, red, and blue)! I gave it a 9 simply because I think the grind was too long...people just want to get out there and play the game, not sit on the hedonic treadmill of gather/upgrade for the first part of the game.

I do think Sean would have been better off not adding the different color planets and required warp drives because people would not have had to grind, but I'm glad to now be able to go directly to more appealing planets. :)

Space combat isn't bad...once you upgrade your ship!
Sentinels are varied and make gathering much more interesting that most games out there...
Resource gathering is MUCH faster than some games I've played (Minecraft, WoW, SWG, etc.)

I love the fact that once you do the grind to obtain the basics...you're set! Now you can get on to do what the game is truly about: exploration and survival!

Sure, they did try to market the game with combat and trading...and these do exist...just as they do in many other games. Nothing new here, and I think that's one reason people are dissapointed. They wanted some new combat and trading...and while crafting and trading could be improved upon possibly...(some games have added small additions to make it more fun), who would ever really want to play a game to trade? It's trading...quite boring in any game!

Fighting can be fun...but this isn't an FPS game! The combat is basic, but meets the requirements (shoot, sprint, jetpack/jump, kill, and blow stuff up). Were people expecting some new FPS? If they were...why? Did they follow this game at all?

Exploration is fun! If you like to explore, then it will be a fun game once you get past the grind to upgrade. Just when I think I've seen the same old stuff...I find a new planet that looks very different. Still sci-fi with the similar color pallets, but awesome!

I loved exploring minecraft worlds...and I LOVE exploring No Mans Sky!

If you think of the technical achievement with this game...it is outstanding! Minecraft graphics are horrible and it runs like crap using Java, but people love it. No Mans Sky is similar because while it may not be a AAA title with thousands of people working on it, the small team has pushed the limits to produce a beautiful procedural game.

Just think...10 years from now the graphics capabilities will catch up (hard to render all that stuff on the fly...the PS4 and fastest PC can't keep up if you cranked up the graphics!) and we will be playing procedurally generated games like skyrim, COD, Minecraft, etc. but they will look awesome too!

I will play COD again if they create a version with procedural generated maps...every round will be a new, unique game without the campers, nade spammers, etc.

The shallowness is the bigger problem though. Especially with the £50 price. It has the same amount of depth as something like Pokémon Go and should be a free game with in-app purchases for determined players.

    It's just not worth £50.

I requested a refund and didn't get one. Sucks but I'll survive! But I don't think I'll spend that kind of money on any game again. I'm done with full-price gaming. I'm not prepared to risk money on a new title and be burnt again, and I've already decided not to spend £50 on remakes and sequels.

We may look back on No Man's Sky as this generation's ET moment. The game that marked the end of a console era. It's brought to a head many problems. The high expense of games and the lack of originality have been a problem for a while. Now we can add the low bar for quality. I'm done.

I requested a refund from Sony within 2 days and less than 4 hour play-time as the game remained unplayable for me. HelloGames never acknowledged/provided a solution to my crash issues.

Sony refused within the first two days a refund providing no reason and by unreasonably delaying ticket responses they eventually called me "uncooperative" as I did not want to troubleshoot and continued to overlook my basic consumer right for a refund of a broken game.

I am now in the process of requesting a chargeback and Sony has explained that this will result in my 10 year PSN account being banned - http://www.naschenweng.info/2016/08/28/requesting-refund-mans-sky-psn-account-banned/

HelloGames is a shill for providing a broken game and over-promising features. Sony Europe has shown no interest in issuing a refund despite SCEA issuing refunds two weeks after the game launched.

If the game had launched as a "true indy" game at a USD20 price tag, it's quality issues can easily be overlooked.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. NMS feels like a cheap early access survival game rushed out and made on a small budget...except it was released as a final product for $60 after three years, two delays and with the backing of a major publisher...oh dear.

The two big selling points of NMS were the sheer number of randomly generated planets and the sense of exploration and discovery of a practically infinite number of worlds. The problem is while buzz words like "procedurally generated" sounds good on paper, the reality of that means everything looks and acts practically the same. There was not one memorable thing about any of the planets I visited or reason to ever go back. They all have the same generic resources, mined from the same generic nods, scattered about the same generic wastelands. You can't build any structures or settle down on a particular planet, only adding to the disposable and forgettable nature of them.

Perhaps not having the "ending" spoiled might have provided some sense of drive or purpose for me to keep playing, however I'd rather know there wasn't going to be a payoff to save myself the time and frustration. Some say the reward is in the journey and not the destination, but this is simply not a journey worth taking in my opinion. I went into this with low expectations after hearing all the controversy and even then I found it interminably dull and underwhelming.

Judging the game by itself I probably would have given it a 4 at best, however I feel it would be remiss not to take the marketing and PR debacle into account. I didn't pay much attention to the game leading up to release, but looking back now at all the documented interviews and demonstrations for the game, I simply cannot see it as anything but misleading at best if not outright lying at worst. Regardless of intention or malice Sean Murray/Hello Games should be held accountable for their actions along with Sony for allowing things to get out of control if not outright encouraging it.

I give No Man's Sky a 0/10 for being a boring, sub-par game and completely unacceptable business practices on the part of both the developer and publisher.

(full disclosure: mine was a rental copy, played for three hours straight before calling it quits due to myself and everyone watching being put to sleep)

It may be procedural generation, but for me, knowing that the game world isn't concrete set and is just being created in the background as I go along, that lessens the impact for me. They were trying to make you feel special like you stumbled upon a world or some feature that no one else has seen, but it's just the engine throwing random crap at you. What incentive do I have, other than a few extra credits, to name my discoveries? Oh I found a new species of mushroom called Vergaboichthalzwhatchamacallit... who cares unless you're the Charles Darwin of open world games? It doesn't help that the randomness is very shallow and the themes repetitious, at least in my 6-7 hrs of play time so far. Maybe it really opens up later, but my overall impression is that the juice isn't worth the squeeze on this high ambitious but ultimately flawed adventure. I guess it boils down to what type of game you are expecting NMS to be, considering the extreme hype surrounding everything, and also what kind of gamer you are. I will say that it is very repetitive and everything looks the same but I don't mind the simpleness of it. I can sit down and play this game for a few hours at a time and enjoy myself regardless of seeing and doing the same stuff over and over. Travel between planets is seamless from surface to surface. The visual style is simple but gorgeous, and the thrill of touching down on a new planet for the first time and exploring the beautiful, immense diversity of it all is truly thrilling to me. I completely avoided the fiasco of No Man's Sky's promotional trail/release by simply not caring about the game. The fantastic review by hbomberguy alerted me to a niche appeal and piqued my interest, and I just bought it for a tenner in the PSN's fantastic Summer Sale. For three days I've binged it nearly non-stop, both alone and with my gf, who is enjoying the experience of exploration and discovery as much as I am.

I’ve found planets with vast lakes and squidgy terrain, ‘paradise planets’ with green skies and green rivers that run through deep canyons, desolate moon-like planets with tall mountains and a palpable sense of loneliness, mushroom planets with toxic atmospheres, and barren planets with little to see or do besides mine the abundant outcrops of valuable minerals. I’ve seen creatures enormous, tiny, cute, and horrifying. I’ve seen haunting monuments to civilizations long-dead half-buried in the middle of nowhere, and bizarre arcing bands of shining minerals streaking out of the ground. I’ve seen soaring peaks and deep ravines and scorched, featureless plains, and strange floating islands peppering twisted purple landscapes. I’ve been hunted through snowy forests by predators that make my skin crawl, and fought off pirates in asteroid belts above the looming spectres of ocean planets. I’m a couple of dozen hours in and while there is a certain definite degree of repetition in aspects of the worlds I’ve been to (because this is an indie game made by a small team of human devs and not the Holy Grail made by Jesus Christ himself), I’ve not lost the sense of wonder when first setting foot on a new planet. I have no doubt that there will be a point where I feel as if I’m just going through the motions, but I haven’t hit that point yet, and for £10 I certainly feel like I’ve got value for my money. I’m also certain that I’ll pick the game up again after I’m done with it for the first time, as there is simply so much to see, not to mention the fact that Hello Games keep adding content for free and thereby increasing the amount available for people to do.

If a game about chilled and contemplative exploration and discovery doesn't sound like your cup of tea, then nothing Hello Games did or didn't do will make you like this game. But if the idea of touching down on an alien moon, the other planets in the system looming in the sky like ghosts, an endless expanse of terrain unexplored stretching in front of you, terrain that no human may ever lay eyes on again, if this sounds exciting, then I highly recommend getting the game. Many of the complaints in the most helpful reviews here have been addressed and fixed. The PS4 version is currently the most stable, and it's only getting better from here.

Eu por exemplo só vou terminar de platinar no PS4 e depois não vou jogar mais, só se atualizem o jogo realmente como estamos esperando. Recomendo a qualquer um que compre caso tenha alguma promoção muito boa nas lojas ou compra um usado. No man sky is great but not perfect, it's an exploration game where each planet is a discovery.

It's not for everyone, if "Enjoy the journey" describe your type of player, if you explored areas in WoW just because they looked cool you'll love it, if you play game for quests and directed content or for game mechanics you'll hate it. There are nearly no "quest" content and the game mechanics (Crafting, trading) are pretty bad.

Now even for exploration it isn't the "perfect" game. It's missing procedural generation for a few key things that would have made it perfect : station structure is globally always the same, there are only a few station / sentient ET design in the game (3), no generated quests or even randomness in actions possible by NPC (All NPCs in station type "shelter" do nearly the same thing). Also the star structures are pretty boring, often 3/4 planets, not gas giants, no planet very far or very big...
Even the planet grounds are pretty even, no big mountains, no profund caves, it's a globally flat world.
Also a strangely populated one, there are hundreds of 1-person habitats on each planet but no ancient ruins or cities.

But what's currently generated (Planetary color scheme, fauna, plants and a few variations on heightmap) is extremely nice and produce impressive results.

I can only hope for the game to continue like minecraft did, for years, adding small touches everywhere and making everything more diverse and interesting.

As i'm sure you are all aware now, this is not a first person action shooter. Yes there are elements of this within the game, but that is certainly not what this is about. It's about exploring, spending four hours wandering around a planet to find whatever you are looking for and it is amazingly satisfying when that time and effort leads to a Journey Milestone.

I like this game, a lot. It's original, it can be exciting, it can be tedious at times but, come on, we can't have excitement all the time, otherwise you might never appreciate when something truly is.... exciting!

Not a perfect game, but the potential and originality of it all is keeping me gripped.

Misleading marketing and outright lies by the developers and publishers leading up to release built up expectations for a game that doesn't exist. No Man's Sky is a bugfest of titanic proportions. The gameplay is fractured and repetitive, with a play loop that gets boring within an hour. Despite all of this the game costs 60 dollars. This is a game in the survivalist/exploration genre and set in space. The universe is near endless and each planet will have wildlife and environment of its own, although it is picked from a palette, so to speak. If you have visited 50 planets, make no mistake, this game will not be a wondrous one where content will still magically always feel fresh. Soon enough, you will discover similarities.

It would be a huge mistake to get this game only based in an interest in exploration.

Even in my first visited planet, I faced a creature of almost identical design that I had previously seen in preview screenshots, and I hadn't even been deep into spoilers. What's worse, the design was weird and really out there. But still -- near identical to the same, strange creature I had already seen before even playing the game. This was a huge disappointment and indicative of what was to come.

No, this game is not first and foremost about exploration. That is merely the backdrop, only a part of what is meant to keep you going. The main attraction here is survival. Recharging your exosuit by minerals you have mined in quite typical Minecraft sense, only with a gun rather than an axe. Upgrading your weapons and spacecraft, and so on.

This game feels like 60% about mining/trading/surviving, 30% about exploring and discovering new worlds, and 10% about combat of various beings on planets and in space, combat an afterthought. Please note that exploration would then consitute to a mere third of the game experience.

You need to love other things than exploring to enjoy this game.

    That is the game's problem.

It is very shallow in content besides exploring.

    It's difficult to review a game that technically could never end. How can you be sure that you have seen everything the game has to offer and provide an accurate, objective response to that? In reality, you could play No Man's Sky for hundreds of hours, but you would have seen the vast majority of what it has to offer after the first ten or so hours. Firstly, the positives;

I love that there are no huge storyline objectives, it is nice not to constantly have reminders popping up telling you to do something, I also like that the game doesn't really force you to do anything unless you want to (going to certain areas or progressing the very thin storyline). It is a relaxing experience, you fly or walk around planets, collect resources to make equipment / upgrades / quest items and to progress. You also have the option to scan the wildlife and upload to a database in exchange for credits.
The planets and creatures are procedurally generated, which makes each experience unique, considering the potentially infinite number of planets, is impressive. However, throughout my time exploring the solar systems, the planets and environments tended to feel a bit similar.

However, despite the relaxing nature of the game and the beautiful vistas it creates, it's novelty does wear thin after a few hours. It quickly becomes apparent that you don't really do anything. What you do in the game is repeated again and again. Fly to a planet, explore, craft items, explore a bit more, discover an outpost, get bored, fly to another planet. Repeat. None of the planets or galaxies seem to have exclusive items or components (from what I saw). In each galaxy there are different aliens you can converse with (usually giving them an item or purchasing an item), throughout each planet are monoliths that you can learn words from, unfortunately, all of the Alien races more or less say or do the same thing. Collecting the words felt like a pointless task, as from what I experienced, it doesn't have any effect on the outcome.

There is no doubt that the coding and development of the game is nothing short of extraordinary. As an experience, it's a fascinating one, it's just not much of a game. If the developers had spent more time fleshing out the storyline, making the combat more diverse and creating a game that is more exciting, it would have probably been the best game ever made.

It looked incredible and I decided to get it the following day. The first hour or so of the game was quite exhilarating. Starting the game on an alien planet with your ship damaged and being left to your own devices to solve the problem without being led by the hand is really tense and fun. Overcoming the first handful of hurdles in the game is the best part of the game, there is a genuine sense of danger and discovery. Unfortunately the first hour of gameplay is basically all you continue to do for the rest of the experience; fixing ship, exosuit and weapon parts by mining minerals from planets surfaces and creating items that will let you warp to the next solar system. Every planet is new in the sense that the colours are different, the conditions vary and the flora and fauna are generated randomly from a pool of variables. This is pretty cool to see initially, but you soon realise that there is just no reason for any of this. There is no real game here, only an exploration sim that lures you in with mystery. I do have to admit that the mystery is pretty enticing, but the gameplay elements of this game are extremely lazy so playing isn't exactly tons of fun. There is very little to actually do and the lack of variation is truly disappointing. The game has nice presentation for the most part; the music is fantastic, the colours, the lack of loading screens, it feels extremely vast but this comes at a price. While the planets are huge and the amount of space travel you can undertake mirrors the vastness of our actual universe, there really isn't much to see on planets apart from the rock formations and plants. You will not see anything that you haven't already seen except with variations in placement, over and over again. While the vastness is quite awe inspiring, the actual graphics aren't anything to write home about. In fact, they're quite obviously dated. Space fights are quite satisfying when you win but mostly because they're so awkwardly designed that you're surprised to even be able to pull them off. The fact that you have to recharge your ship in the inventory menu during battles through a series of navigations and clicks while combat continues unpaused is a head scratching choice. The puzzles in the game are very simple, mostly either multiple choice riddles or numeric ones. I've seen the same type of numeric riddle with exactly the same numbers three times already and it's things like this that make you question just how much forethought went into this. As a game, this fails. As a technical achievement, it succeeds to a certain extent, but once the brief initial excitement of flying from a planet into outer space has worn off there isn't much to marvel at apart from some pretty colours. It seems to me that this game is primarily trying to be an exploration simulator with philosophical undertones and it gets some things right and some things wrong, but the main issue is the lack of what's on offer to do. Exploring shouldn't be this repetitive and it shouldn't yield such a small plethora of results. The fact that this is being sold as a $60 game is cheeky. There isn't $60 worth of content here. If this game was $20 or less I might be fairly satisfied but honestly, if you have a limited budget for gaming I would definitely not spend your money on this game, I don't totally regret doing so as I really wanted to check it out as I love science fiction and mystery, but I do feel a bit cheated by the price. Pro :
    - Endless Universe to explore
    - Immersive Environment and just something new

    Cons :
    - Lack of Content (The game is about 2.5gb big as download file which doesn't change once installed - so you find out quite fast that this Game really doesn't offer that much of a variety.
    - Aliens look similar
    - After 5 hours you saw almost all ships you can get/buy, they only differ in upgrades, style and price
    - The "uploading" feature doesn't do anything besides give you credits. If you deny firewall access to this Game you can upload everything again after restarting the Game. It doesn't really upload anything, they could've named it "claim for discover" rather than upload.
    - Graphics are just terrible, just take a look at the ground it looks like someone threw up on the ground and was too lazy to clean it up
    - Plants, Rocks, Planets itself look almost same, just color difference
    - Biggest problem : Inventory size, you find yourself collecting stuff from loot boxes, yeah and then surprise they don't stack. You ship is full in the first 20min, so is your suit inventory. I found myself running around for like almost an hour before i could fix my starter ship to get off the planet.
    - The handling of the ship is terrible, you dont really want to use a and d otherwise you find yourself spinning like crazy.
    - Running feels like walking, walking feels like slow motion
-You can't even use the word "optimized" because it is just not. It's 30 fps capped upon first launch with low settings along side. I got a pretty decent pc and i face freezes, fps issues and bugged textures all over the place.

So in comparison this Game looks to me like an unfinished Tech preview of the Game. If you play it for like 2 hours you will ask yourself - "is that really it". This Game is just not finally done, but sadly it is. You can even harvest plants. You must shoot everything with your lazer which overheats like an cpu without cooling.

Full price worth? No definitely not, not even half price is worth. 15-25€ seems okay but still not fair for an 2016 Game which was hyped so hard.

Wait for an price cut, or get a pirated version since this Game (and the whole development) doesn't deserve this money. They first advertised this Game as mmo-based multiplayer which got played down and finally simply just edited in steam as "singleplayer".

Please, i hope they don't ever create a Game again.

Lemme sum up the issues (after 20 or so hrs of play):

    - Space "battles" are a joke, best to be ignored.
    - Creature diversity is non-existent. There are about 30 types of species and they vary in extremely minor things.
    - Creature AI is a joke.
    - Flying in the atmosphere is limited.
    - Vortex Cube planets breaks the game's economy.
    - Cannot transfer upgrades to new ships or multi-tools, which leads to a repetitive grinding for exactly the same stuff over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
    - You're gonna visit the same 5 buildings over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
    - Beside mining and resource gathering, there is nothing "interesting" to do in this game. Creature discovery gets boring once you realize the issue #2.

Don't buy this until the price drops to $2 or until it gets patched up to the level of quality of the trailers.

The ability to venture in space and being able to land on every planet and discover that planet is something I have always wanted to do, and No Man's Sky opens up that possibility.

I can agree that No Man's Sky didn't live up to it's hype, but it is still an amazing game. Even though the gameplay can get a bit repetitive at times, the massive scale of the game and the diversity of all the planets makes up for it.

No Man's Sky is definitely worth a try if you are interested in an exploration/survival experience set in space.

Let's see, you start off on a planet looking for parts for your ship, which got repetitive after the first few seconds. You run out of breath too fast which got annoying, also there's too much of the same element like iron ect..

I give 9 because there are some things that could use some improvement like aiming, key bindings (for flying) and space combat, animations of quadruped creatures.

But considering the modern market the game has to compete against in similar genres, like Minecraft, Subnautica and The Forest. (Which are all quite cheap) Make people completely forget just how big of a deal this game really is. It does still feel like a Beta. But the developers are some of the most enthusiastic people I've ever heard from, and they seem ridiculously into what they've created. They're definitely going to keep releasing patches and updates for this game. Which will completely change pretty much everything in the game. In my opinion, I think it'll end up being one of the most interesting and engaging games ever created. But right now. Wait until it's cheaper. Expand

The game offers very little. They've focused on the engine, the visuals, the audio but the game itself isn't fun, it's very boring, actually. Too bad, I had high expectations for this game..

I began NMS thinking there would be many planet types as opposed to just different species & colors. This could be my fault for not looking into the game more but with games I'm really looking forward to I try to avoid getting too much information to keep from spoiling the game. From what I've seen/played, all of the planets are rock planets that vary slightly in topography but don't look too different. I was hoping I'd travel to gas giants, molten worlds, maybe even words where volcanic eruptions are happening constantly (as was the case in Earth's early life). It was a bad idea thinking this game would be as mind bending as a huge blockbuster like Interstellar but that was what I was thinking. Thought I might fly down to a planet thats almost completely water, or down to a planet that has raging dust storms that limits visibility & is throwing rocks around that we have to watch out for. Instead I go down to a planet that has red water & green grass that reminds me of something out of a Mario game & then move on to the next planet where there is RED grass & BLUE water. This boredom started within 3-4 hours for me.
The worst part of NMS is that it slows down progression by making you do menial, repetitive tasks. The game honestly reminds me so much of Destiny & I don’t think any of those ways is good. To get it out of the way bc so many people already mentioned it, the fact that you hold down the button to do an action in the UI all the time is an odd choice. It’s just not necessary & making a cursor be the way you select things instead of the normal way on consoles where something is always highlighted & to select something you move to it & tap a button doesn’t make sense to me. The worst way this game feels like Destiny to me is how you have to mine materials to do ANYTHING. Need more life support? Scan the area, aim at resource, hold trigger, get material, use to refill life support. Same exact thing for ammo, fuel, etc. The fact that you can hold so little makes it so much more unbearable. It feels like you’re mining for resources to level up an exotic weapon in Destiny except you don’t get a cool ability at the end, you just don’t die from lack of life support.

NMS has been compared to Elite Dangerous & I agree that the gameplay (GP) is pretty similar. The art style is very different but the general GP is very similar in that you fly around to different planets exploring & completing your objectives. Both games have a HUGE amount of planets & you warp to different systems while needing resources to continue your journey. But it’s also different from Elite Dangerous & some of those differences are good while others are bad in my opinion. First the good: When I played Elite Dangerous, it took me forever to even master the basics of flying. It’s very punishing & even if you start to get the hang of flying, you could make a mistake that leaves you stranded between two planets as your life support fails & you slowly freeze to death. Now that sounds fun in the way a lot of survival games sound fun but when it happens a couple of times you’ll soon grow frustrated. Now the more you play Elite, the more you’ll get the hang of that & it will happen much less so if you spend enough time playing the game I know you’ll have fun & start having long runs.
NMS is like a more on rails version of that: speed of your ship is easy to control warping is easy, & all the asteroids I’ve found in space will blow up if shot & give you fuel so it is hard to get stranded. I like this because it allows me to just play the game. But the bad part of this is that it also holds your hand with your ability to fly your ship. It’s not as bad as Destiny where you never actually fly your ship but I was expecting to be able to fly your ship like you could fly planes in Crimson Skies. It was very free flying but NMS is the opposite. There’s an invisible barrier that prevents you from getting within about 50 feet of anything on the ground unless you hit the ‘Land’ button which the computer controls for you. I just fly in the sky looking for the same looking base on every planet & the ship feels like its on rails & you just move it left & right sometimes.
The last way this reminds me of Destiny is that it really looks like they finished an unfinished game with the intent of finishing it within the first year or two of it being out. It feels like a more polished (not finished) Steam Green Light game. Its an early access game that has its skeleton structure laid out but the details that will make it a blast havent been implemented yet. Id highly suggest waiting for a while until they update it a lot. I think in a year, maybe two, it will be one of the best games out there. But right now, its a $60 early access game.

The worlds are beautiful, you have a certain amount of stuff to do, etc. Finding your first animal, your first alien, going to another solar system for the first time is quite interesting. Unfortunately, as the game moves on, you realize that what you did in the first 3 or 4 hours is EXACTLY what you will be doing as long the game lasts! You travel from planet to planet, just to mine the SAME minerals (what is frustrating since almost all minerals can be found in any planet...), to meet the SAME aliens (whose AI seems like an old (read: obsolete) RPG game), to find the SAME "technological" structures (which led you to a stupid puzzle that is repeated over and over again), etc.. In other words, what you see in the first hours, is what you will be doing over and over and over again. About the 18 quintillion planets, it may be true, but what you see in the game is just variations of the first planet (not to mention animals, which are randomly generated, without regarding any relations to the planet and/or environment they're in. Sentinels are just the awesomely ANNOYING. They are not cool, nor interesting, or even presents itself as a real challenge. Just BORING. The planet conditions (radiation, toxic, ice and hot) are all the same, with a different symbol above your shield. The effects are the same: your "environmental protection" starts decreasing and, when it's over, you start to get damage until you die. One more thing, the only thing the game value is exploration, which is constantly denied by the minimal slots in your suit/ship (not to mention that they're the same slots that you use to install new technologies on both of them). Technically, the game is good (besides its FPS dives), but it is not enough to keep you playing for a long time since it lacks a good (and rewarding) gameplay. Expand

It accurately captures the crushing loneliness of space by throwing you out into the universe and making you survive on planets with lethal weather conditions or atmosphere's. Visually the game is appealing. Seemingly infinite worlds are flourishing with weird and wonderful creatures. The issue i have is the quick notice of repetition. Yes you can mine various minerals and isotopes to help you survive. Yes there are different starships for you to pilot, and yes there are Quintillion's of planets. This is an issue however, as once you have done what there is to to, once you have warp jumped, once you have experienced the different types of hazardous planets and once you have seen wildlife, there really isn't anything else to do. The game lacks any objective. You find yourself warping from star system to star system, only to feel the the current one, was just like the last. The grind kicks in, and it just gets boring. You can discover Alien ruins and learn words to i think four different languages, but all they do is allow you a slightly better understanding of an npc that has no character. All NPC's are routed to the spot and just offer you dialog which if you select the right choice, rewards you with the same stuff you can find. Hooray i can explore ancient Alien ruins to allow me to learn the dialect of said alien races....only for him to give me a small upgrade to my mining tool... It's a shame as the concept of No Man's Sky is brilliant and i have a massive love of Astronomy. The issue resides with a huge game, with no fill. Randomly generated planets just generate same-ish planets that don't add much to a pointless grind. Perhaps in the future, we can get a No Man's Sky like it was hyped up to be. Expand

That's being said: Hello Games will have to step up their game to ensure people will (remain) see that and enjoy the game for a longer period, like Minecraft. Now the game is to buggy and a lot of things you do are repetitive. This will become a breaking point for almost everybody at some stage and they will stop playing the game. Add MP, co-op or a proper storyline and try to generate planets, flora and fauna with more different looks and feels can improve the game experience a lot. I personally would love to explore a system with some friends and build abase of operations somewhere.

I trust Hello Games will achieve this over time and I hope they will add this by free updates. Then it will become a testament of new capabilities in the gaming era and one of the greatest games of all times.

I gave a 10 for 2 reasons: the exploratory component and the infinite potential of the basic formula of this game . Exploration is the best ever seeing in a video game ever: planets are gigantic and even if they just have 1 single biome each these can be complex enough to reveal a lot of different combinations in the elements and create a variety of different environments. If you love pure exploration you will never end in doing it, but at the same time you will always have new places to go: 18.446.744.073.709.551.616 is a very big number of combinations. This enormity combined with the very simple mechanics of the game-play would normally bring me to sign an 8 as score, but I also have to consider the infinite number of improvements that both Hello Games and mod creators will be able to add to this base in the future. This potential is big as the number of planets: here we have an entire universe where every single thing imaginable could be added, more than enough for me to add 2 points to the final score. At the conclusion in my opinion No Man's Sky is an almost infinite sandbox game with a decent but slow and repetitive game-play and an almost infinite potential of growth: at the moment is not for everyone, but if it fits to you is fantastic. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Developer Hello Games, and Sean Murray in particular, went from hero to zero within the first week of release. It took a little while for people to realize how little this game has to offer. 18 squintillion planets is not the same as 18 squintillion endlesslly interesting or surprising elements. That would be too much to ask, of course, but in reality there is a sense that you've pretty much seen and done everything within about 10-15 hours.

A lot of that time is spent performing pretty dull and repetitive tasks - sorting inventories, mining rocks, talking to cut-out characters or reading sub-par sci-fi text. Yes, there are fun bits - blasting off from a planet and travelling to that moon you saw in the distance - is good for a while and the lack of load screens are a plus, but this feels like the bare bones of a full-price game.

Initially, you're drawn into the promise of the game, but this feeling is soon replaced with frustration, disappointment and even resent. The lack of different ship types, the poor combat, the irritating sentry bots, the lack of factions etc. all of this has been well covered. Much of this could have been easily remedied even by a small development team. This is when games get extremely frustrating. Why is it that a few hours play can reveal glaring flaws that a team of people failed to notice in five years?

I'd watched videos of Murray talking about his pet project, prior to release, and it seemed like he was a genuine fan-boy producing something for the joy of it, not monetary gain. So, why lie about the game's contents? Why, after five years of production, leave glaring design flaws in place (the transmitter/ship upgrade function is surely not intended)?

If Hello Games had charged £15 for this, and not over-hyped/lied about the game's contents, then they would have been met with a much more positive reaction.

As it stands, No Man's Sky is the first game I've actually contemplated seeking a refund for. My advice for gamers: wait for a price drop, wait for promised content to arrive and hope this promising game finally delivers.

My advice to Hello Games/ Sean Murray: spend the next year or two providing FREE upgrades to this game, deliver on your hype/promises and maybe, just maybe the squintillion people who bought into this might forgive you. Oh, and stop grinning.

The game starts out as an epic adventure. Your ship is dead in the water. You're stranded on a deserted planet with nothing to do but fix the ship and start the epic journey into space. With 18 quintillion promised planets, that sounds like an epic journey to me. Unfortunately, this is where the games loses all it's appeal. Eighteen quintillion planets isn't exactly that. It turns out that this is a simple mathmatical formula that indicates the number of potential planets you could interact with. What that ends up equating to is that you have many planets that are essentially the same with only mild variations. If a planet has 6 different variables, you could end up with a planet that is 111111, or 111112, or 111113. Those are three different planets, but they really only changed one variable. So essentially the planet will look and feel exactly the same aside from that one altering variable. This makes for very boring gameplay.

I like many others was expecting Minecraft for adults. With the ability to creat my own worlds. To build bases, and interact with aliens. The aliens are cookie cutter replications at best. I, like many others, continued playing the game for hours thinking, "There has to be more. So much more was promised. Maybe I'm just not far enough into the game to find these things yet." Sadly after about 25 hours, I'm still just mining resources, expanding my inventory slots, buying new ships and trying to learn languages. All of these things gets incredibly boring after about 5 repetitions. About 5 hours in the game started feeling monotonous. The game feels more like a $19.99 PSN game than it does a $60 full release.

I'm still holding out hope to see if the game gets better as the developers start introduing new content with patches. I'm not holding my breath, as they didn't deliver on their first set of promises, so why would they deliver on their latest set. Hold out on this game. Give it some time to see exactly what the developers have in the works. Wait until those patches are released and find some friends who were foolish enough to believe the hype and bought the game sight unseen. Then if the devs can deliver on their promises, and only then, should you even consider wasting your money on this released too early game.

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

The world of No Man's Sky is insanely vast and beautiful, but there’s nothing to do in it! There’s no goal, no destination, no ending, nothing!

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
