This game is truely great and a masterpiece if you play it the way its meant to be played, and that is to take your time and explore and let yourself get lost in it.

If you answered no to these, it's probably not for you. I'm the type of person who loves to run around open world games, ignoring the main missions and creating my own fun or completing side missions. This game is perfect for the adventurer and explorer who doesn't need waves of enemies to have a good time.

Being able to hop into my ship, peruse a planet for resources, mine what I need and find ancient ruins, other alien traders, then hop back in my ship and fly into the galaxy to see a beautiful moon orbiting a giant planet has been magical for me. But it's not for everyone.

No Man's Sky was, unfortunately, bound to disappoint certain players. After nearly 4 years of hype, this small development team ultimately had to answer to expectations which were not properly checked.

At its core, No Man's Sky is an exploration and survival game. Most of the story is implicit, something sorely lacking in modern gaming, and which is in this case, gracefully executed. You begin with a crashed vessel, which you must repair before taking off into space, and the story is told through your inevitable desire to survive, to analyze.

There is NO handholding in No Man's Sky, again, a refreshing deviation from AAA gaming in 2016.

Exploration is done gradually, usually incentivized by the discovery of a faraway marker, or alien "monolith". Through these discoveries, you learn the languages of the various races of the universe, making it easier to communicate with them, understand their requests, and solve their racial puzzles.

There will be some combat during your journey, either against space pirates, or the "space police" which monitors your acquisitions from a planet. More diverse fauna and flora means tighter policing, an interesting nod to real-world preservation techniques. Yet combat takes a hard back seat in this game, and players should be aware of this.

There are some drawbacks in the early hours, to this exploration mechanic. The lack of inventory space early on means you'll often have to make return trips to Outposts in order to acquire that which you ultimately really need. But the system taunts you with bigger ships, more space, and in that sense your gradual assent from young explorer to inter-galactic merchant is rewarding, if not often steep.

Ultimately this is an ode to discovery, a relaxing intergalactic journey where the acquisition of resources is meant to take up most of your attention, not hi-speed chase sequences out of the Star Trek universe.

Don't hurry to finish it (does it finish?). Take your time. Enjoy the enormity of it. There are other great games coming out soon, and I plan to enjoy most of them. I'll come back to this one from time to time, go farther and farther into the edges of the galaxy. But those other games are still some time away, so right now I'll upgrade my hyperdrive, think of a ridiculous name for the next winged hippo I see, and fly to the stars. Expand

1). Tech demo impressive feat but is it actually fun to play? For me that's a no.
2). Pain in the backside resource juggling due to tiny inventory size!
3). Planets lack any real variety, same POIs on each one, creatures look very similar. 4). Full priced release! Should have been £20 tops imho on ps store. 5). Absolutely atrocious texture load-in. 6). Much better crafting/survival

You will be dissapointed. But if you want a game where the real fun is just exploring a planet. Learning about an Alien Race's language. Mining, flying around a cold and barren world looking for all the species of that planet. You will have a ton of fun. This is like a considerably better version of Minecraft. I couldn't say enough good things about this game. I usually play it after any stressful activity. If I have just gotten off Starcraft 2 or Heroes of the Storm I go and play some No Man's Sky and just feel at peace. It is a superb game with a ton of depth if you look for it. And the developers have done a massively great job patching it already. I am hopeful for continued patches and content along the way! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No Man Sky appears to be suffering from the over hype of the game and thus generating reviews that are absolutely uneducated. You can't form an opinion about the game after only playing two hours. After playing for 7-10 hours I have discovered that the game has a lot of depth when it comes to the game especially with the alien races. You don't instantly understand what they are saying to you so you rely on visiting obelisk and talking to them in order to gain knowledge and learn the language. The depth is when you explore more into these alien races. The large obelisk monuments are obscure and mysterious but reveal information that adds to the experience. For example I encountered an alien race of Gek in a system, they look reptilian or amphibious like, have an awful smell, and are very fond of trading and consider your character as a customer. While venturing around the world I came across a bit of knowledge from an obelisk about the Gek. I won't reveal what was said but it was an amazing bit of information that I learned about the species and it made me look at the alien species a different way and interact with them differently. Another species I came across was the Korvok which is a alien species that may or may not be robotic. The Korvoks are highly intelligent and focus on studying plant and animal species. They enjoy acquiring information and think of you as a test subject. There is an even larger narrative in play in this game and I think we haven't given the game enough time to discover everything it holds. The Atlas Station is also extremely mysterious and I think there are things that will be discovered in the future. Just because the game doesn't live up to what everyone imagined it to be, doesn't automatically make it a below average game and the great thing is there is infinite room for growth! Is it perfect? Absolutely not, but its not and abysmal joke of a game that everyone is trying to make of it. I'd suggest waiting to see what the developers plan for the future of the game. If they are adding content constantly, than this game is worth everyone's time. Honestly I thought I was going to absolutely hate the game but I learned that it was captivating if I actually looked at what was going on in the game. Expand

Learning the languages is fun and it's interesting solving the puzzles when opening a scanner. I got into one ship battle and died, but headed back out and grabbed everything I lost. Easy Peezy.

I like the flying and understand the frustration of mining at the beginning. It's like Terraria, you start with a wood pickax and then eventually end up with a diamond drill. It's not suppose to be easy at first. That's the game. The slots are frustrating, but then you figure out how to add slots to your suit and jet.

This game is exactly what I expected and hope that they continue to add new content!!!

I want to start off by saying the polarized reviews of this game aren't really helpful to anyone. The 10's will probably be anyone who thought the game would be perfect and, even in the face of information that conflicts with that, want to keep that allusion alive. I also feel like a majority of that 0-3's are people who really hated this game before it even came out and haven't even played it but reviewed it poorly anyway. Me and my girlfriend have now played about 12-15 hours of this game now and I think I can review it pretty solidly. We haven't really rushed anything and we've been to about 7 different galaxy's now. You can go faster. I'm sure other people have. We are taking our time. I mean it is an exploration game. To keep it brief, this game was everything I expected. I didn't expect it to be perfect. Or the combat to be life-changing. But I did want the experience to be fun. And you now what. It has been fun. And even though we've played 12-15 hours I would imagine there is about a good 20 more hours until it all starts feeling pretty repetitive. And it will start feeling repetitive. There is a lot in the game. But a lot of it is the same. But right now it's really cool to go to the different stations, learn the language, document things. It's all really cool. Don't expect a multiplayer game. This is not that. Don't expect CoD in space, because it isn't that either. To quote Sean Murray, this is a "really chill game." You play this to wander around and collect and explore things. Some people are just not going to like that. I'd like to note that I kind of view this game like minecraft a little bit. In the beginning they didn't have half of the stuff that they do now. They created a foundation and created a base following and went from there. And from what I've seen No Man's Sky is well on its way to doing all those things. Murray and his team have promised free updates. They said we can build bases and own space freighters in future updates. I give it an 8 out of 10 right now because the fun is limited in scope and length. My idealized vision is that they will update it to raise that 8 to a 10 with future updates. I'm impressed by what this small team has done. And I hope they will continue to support this game. That's why I bought it day one. To hopefully support this incredible team enough so they will continue to make this game great, even into the future. Just a final note on some details that might be important. Inventory management is a real thing and if you don't like to micromanage this might not be for you. If you don't like to explore, or don't like mining resources to keep going, this might not be for you. If you are a chill sort of person who wants a chill experience, this game is probably for you. Thanks to Sean Murray and the guys at Hello Games, you're awesome. Keep doing what you're doing. Expand

Good luck travelers on your journey of convergence to the center. If you are a fan of science fiction, and are looking for a Space Exploration simulator that is lighthearted with a sense of wonder and hope. No Man's Sky is the game for you.

The slightly skewed reviews that some of these people are leaving makes you just want to shake your head in disbelief. Read all the 0 and 10 reviews. Makes me want to vomit. No This game is not a 10. No this game is not a 0. Its not a 3 or 4 or even a 5. The game is a Solid 7 and half, 8 or 9 in my opinion. And just to sway the critics I am going to give it a 9. Here is my reasoning.

    First starting with negatives:
Yes the game was largely over-hyped. Yes the combat is pretty basic. Yes there is no story or its hidden within the game and I need to learn the language to uncover it. The movement kind of is slow when on foot.

Now lets move to the positives.
But once you get into your spaceship and can fly from place to place, it gets much better. Your spaceship is your home, kind of. So be sure you don't go too far from it. You store everything there, once your suit runs out, and it helps you find Alien Artifacts, Trade Outposts to buy new Ships, and just helps you travel Space and Explore.

No Man's Sky is actually quite enjoyable. Once I got through slight learning curve in the first few hours. Flying from one point to another. Naming different animals, which are surprisingly well animated and have different behaviors and vary largely in size and color. I met this huge animal of about 15 feet long thing that looked like a Lion with a Cone head that was amazing. I took many pictures and videos of it, and sent them to my friends. The thing was freaking huge, and I gave it good it then it was happy and started to follow me around. So real, it felt real. I felt as if I was there.

The game world is very ascetically pleasing. And I must stress this, the world in a word is beautiful. The Space is also quite pleasing to the eye. This is not a realistic space sim. This game is a story book space sim. Like traveling to another Universe, sort of. And exploring it is truly a Unique experience unlike any I ever experienced in any game.

From the start. What I did was I spent 12 hours on the first planet to make sure I got everything catalogued before moving on to the next planet. To the people saying each planet environment is not varied are truly wrong. My first starting planet had mountains, peeks, valleys, grass, different colored sky. I named my first planet Ferdinand 1, and my Solar System Magellan after the famous explorer. I plan to name all the planets I see after famous explorers and ships of history. The next planet I named Isabella after the Spanish monarch. But back to Ferdinand 1. Ferdinand 1 And it was the kind of place I would want to spend many years in. I cannot figure out how they made the game world look so unique.

Props to the development team on this game. Just ignore the negative and reviews and focus on the positive. The game needs some work, but I am sure future updates will add many requested features.far as just what we have at launch, its an extremely playable and enjoyable experience.

Two things I would fix are the interface, and the movement. Maybe add some land vehicles. Walking and flying shouldn't be the only ways to travel. Some type of Land rover or car would be great.

This is kind of a first impression review as I only have spent maybe 12 hours in the game, so as I play more of it, I am sure I will discover things such as learning Alien language. The mystery of the Atlas. And try to get to the center of the Universe, but right now I am just too busy exploring my own Solar System, before I even think about going further.

Good luck travelers, and don't let these 0 star reviews get you down. They are wrong, or people who did not even play the game. Or the type of people that play a game till end, and return it. If you are that type of player, that is looking for a story driven game, stay away from it. If you are looking for an enjoyable game you can play for many days, months, maybe even years and like Science Fiction. Then this game is for you.

Even though the graphics are a bit dated, the beauty of the environments overshadows the graphics and just makes you want to explore and find new things. The first hour was tough, but once I figured out the mechanics. I think this game will hold me off for a long time.

Ask yourself a question. Did you like Mass Effect's scam called "planetary exploration? Where you landed on a randomly generated square with mountains and ridicolous recources. Well, if you like that, go on and buy it. Because that is exactly what it is, randomly generated, utterly pointless sandbox that makes little sence and have no purpose. Some people want exactly that.

Extremely repetitive. The game completely fails to keep you engaged after the first 5 hours, which is a damn shame since those first hours were great. After that planets all begin to look the same, you recognize the same plants and animals with very minor changes everywhere and the unholy grinding of minerals is enough to drive you mad.

Those amazingly diverse planets we were promised, after a few hours in, all feel quite samey.
Had this game been released at half the price with half the hype I'd say it was a decent little experiment.
As it carries a AAA game price (in fact higher) and offers such limited gameplay and is missing promised features, I'd wait for a bargain bin or rent this title.

This game has many flaws. It is far from perfect, but above all highly overhyped : that's why some people are extremely disappointed about it.

I could write down whole paragraphs of what No Man's Sky is lacking, or even doing wrong, but that would be pointless as it would still deserve a 9. Why that, might you ask... For a simple reason : no game is even remotely close to what this game achieves. The only pieces of software that accomplish only parts of No Man's sky are titles like Space Engine, Starbound, Minecraft or Dwarf Fortress.

No Man's sky is a huge step forward in the direction of the game we all dream of : a huge fresh world to explore.

That being said, the game in itself is really good.

First, very moody : music and design come together to immerse you in alien nature. It can be really gorgeous, if you forgive its rough edges.

Gameplay speaking, there is always a feeling of rushing forward that I find extremely enjoyable, even when painstakingly scavenging ressources. Why not leave this planet you just began exploring ? Why not fly to the next ? Unlike other scripted games where you're tempted to look into every corner of every room in search for the littlest power up or secret, in No Man's Sky the world is so vast that you can choose what to explore and what to skip.

To sum it up, I think despite its shortcomings, this game is so unique it really stands out. Nothing is like it. I can't wait to play it again.

In fact, a lot of the stuff you're suggested to do in the game was really only added at a late stage, when the developers decided to try and market the game for a large audience.

In fact, a lot of the stuff you're suggested to do in the game was really only added at a late stage, when the developers decided to try and market the game for a large audience.

In terms of gameplay, think Minecraft, but without actually building (just the mining and crafting part). The discovery and scanning parts (and the general aesthetic) feel to me rather like Metroid Prime. And the broad concept (i.e. exploring a massive and realistically scaled universe) is pure Elite. You will get out of this game precisely what you put into it... there's nothing helping you along. There are a couple of ways in which you could theoretically "finish" the game... to be honest, I'm not in the least bit interested in that. In fact, I will actively seek to avoid it. I'm quite happy pursuing my own quest to translate the local alien dialect of the area in which my game started out, and getting the necessary keys to unlock some of the locked areas.

It really helps if you understand (and I mean **really** understand) just what the developers have achieved too... this will help you overlook the fact that the graphics are quite basic, and draw distances (when flying close to planets at speed) are frequently compromised by a weird dithering effect.

Also, you have to be forgiving where the developers have compromised real physics in favour of playability. Docking/landing your ship is basically done for you; gravity is depicted as per Hollywood movies (i.e. not related to the mass of objects), some of the "things" from which you get "elements" are quite illogical and space itself is bizarrely blue & pink... never black. This is very much SciFi with the emphasis on "Fiction".

So... not realistic enough for anyone expecting Elite; way too open-ended for the majority of video game players. Who is this going to appeal to exactly? The answer is right here in the Metcritic reviews.

From the moment you leave the first planet you spawn in (which is different for everyone btw), you have an entire universe ahead of you. I don't think people realize the scope of this game. Each planet has a different climate, weather, toxicity/heat/radiation levels, etc. I struggled a bit in the beginning trying to learn the basics of the game. However, once I got used to the controls and tasks that I had to do, the game began to show its true colors.

You are a Traveler, embarking on an adventure that will literally take you across the universe. You will need to be able to mine resources to power/upgrade your exosuit, multi-tool (for mining and combat), and ship (shielding, weapons and storage) to help you survive on planets and in space. Each and every element you mine serves some sort of purpose in the game world. Some players may wish to mine and build a better suit and ship. Others may want to loot these resources from large AI controlled ships in space. Some may want to become a trader and sell their resources to earn more money. Some players may simply wish to wander around this literal universe. You can do all these things and much more. (You can name your own planets, systems, plants, and animals. Other players may also come across places where you've left your mark).
There is interesting lore in this game that I will not spoil. However I will say that the ability to learn the languages of the different races in the game is interesting. It pays off in many different ways, such as receiving crucial upgrades from a certain alien via the correct response to what they say/ask for.
At its core, No Man's Sky is an exploration game with survival elements inside of a vast universe. It is fun to play, and I cannot wait to continue playing it after I finish this review.

If you're happy farming planets for the same elements over and over, and love the challenges of freeing up inventory space constantly (this does annoy me), then you will love it. If anything, it's more. For me, the idea of wandering an endless series of planets, scanning and naming them and the plants and animals thereon, and then taking off and moving to a new one was thrilling! But there's even more to it then that. I've been dismayed at what appear to be a bunch of typically "hardcore" gamer types who are used to getting a game and powering through it to maximum levels and then lording it over the universe the game creates. That actually doesn't work in this type of game, in no way, shape or form. The keening, whining, raging and crying was intimidate and immense. From **** about the actual mechanics of journeying, critical to the casual style and tone of the game, to whining about the lack of a clear ending or point at which I imagine they could be dominant, or multiplayer (so they could show off to their buddies or measure themselves against them I guess) they could not seem to connect that this game was not the same as all the others they had played before. Instead they flooded fan groups where people who loved the game were busy posting pics and discussing their zen moments of exploration to howl at their boredom and hurt feelings, seeming to mysteriously hold us and the game company responsible for their lack of understanding of the terms "single player game" and "free exploration." Raining hate everywhere, including spamming review sites with how "boring" the game was, when they spent no time on planets, simply mining and running. Meanwhile I have already spent close to 100 hours in the game and while I have discovered and named 5 systems and multiple planets, I backtracked to to my home world to make sure I 100% discover it and plan on doing that for each planet in each system I have discovered going forward before moving forward on the Atlas path. This game can last a lifetime if you let it, enjoy it, savor it. But if you have no imagination, or are a "hardcore, elite gamer" look elsewhere...this game is NOT FOR YOU! Expand

This is not the game for the COD generation as this requires patience and a little role play on behalf of the player. Its a pity that this game pushes so many boundaries yet it will be remembered for what it doesn't have rather than the imagination and freedom that it does have.

A masterpiece, and probably a seminal moment in computing and gaming history, though most don't realise it yet. Your enjoyment is only really limited by your imagination, which is exactly how 'play' should be. The people criticising this game seem simply unable to handle the shock of the 'new'. And these are the same 'types' of people who criticised System Shock 2, upon its first release.

I think this game is pretty fun. It does get boring sometimes, but some other games do that as well. I like flying around in my ship and exploring all the different planets. The only problem with it is that Hello games lied about a lot of really cool features. I hope this game gets updated and gets new features, but for now, I think it's really fun. 8/10

I originally gave this game an 8. Not sure what I was thinking. It's a lot of fun for the first 10 hours, and after that, I suddenly realized the game's bleakness and stark flaws. My problems arise from some less common issues, but I still am annoyed by all those flaws that other people adressed, like inventory space, and the lies of the devs. Heres what I think.

    Pros: Cool soundtrack,

My problems arise from some less common issues, but I still am annoyed by all those flaws that other people adressed, like inventory space, and the lies of the devs. Heres what I think.

    Pros:
Cool soundtrack, Nice colour palate, a cool translation system where you have to slowly learn new words to slowly find out what aliens are saying, and a spaceflight system that, while barebones, I rather enjoyed flying around huge planets in a vast universe.

    Cons:
    Okay, where to start.....
The developers pointed out countless times that this was a game about exploration, and discovering the unknown. Here's the catch: every single **** planet and solar system has already been discovered. Each solar system has a space station, and every planet has spaceships flying around it and bases built on them. It completely defeats the **** purpose.
Planetary variation. The planets are criminally similar. Sure, they're different sizes, but there are only two types of planets; planets with a slight majority of hilly terrain, and planets with slightly more water and super shallow oceans. Maybe a few floating rocks here and there. Of course, the biomes and creatures are different, but that gets really old after awhile.
Draw distance. It doesn't look like I'm on a **** planet when it's always as foggy a certain distance away as London in the 1950s. You can't see any horizons. Its pathetic; it feels like I'm on some sort of **** test level, not a planet.
Space between planets. They're all extremely close together in a solar system, making it unrealistic.
Warp drive fuel. To get fuel for your warp drive you have to mine stuff to get stuff to make one thing, then mine some more stuff to make another thing that requires the previous thing, then **** BUY an object from a galactic trade terminal for a hefty amount of units, then mix the thing you bought with the things you previously used, add some other object, and there you have it; one warp drive fuel cell; enough to get to to the next Solar System over.
Deadlock. You need to mine resources to charge your multitool. But mining takes power. So you need to mine resources to charge your multitool. But mining takes power. So you need to mine resources to charge your multitool. But mining takes power. God, its a **** closed circle; you can't go anywhere with that.
Repetitive Elements. Mine **** Sell it. Mine **** Sell it. Mine **** Sell it. Mine **** Sell it. Mine **** Sell it. Mine **** Sell it. Mine **** Sell it. Mine **** Sell it. Fly around a little, warp to next solar system over, then do it again. Holy hell.

Theres plenty of other things I hate about this game that I can't think of right now..... how come I had to spend 80$ on this game while everyone else spent 60$? Is it just because of location? God.....
I have to say that I haven't had a SINGLE crash on this game on my PS4, and have only EVER had one or two framerate drops, so, mine performs fine..... but thats still no reason for anybody to waste their money on this piece of trash.

Ignore the haters. This is a game about discovery. If you were anything like me as a kid and you looked up at the stars and wondered 'what if' than this game is for you. It's not perfect or the game to end all games but it is something that I have been searching for all my life.

This is a very tricky game to recommend. I like parts of it but the whole experience is marred by very shallow flying controls and the lack of any meaningful or interesting space content.

No Man's Sky shines brightest when your boots are on the ground of a planet and you're wandering around collecting resources, scanning animals, plants and rocks and spelunking in a cave. Bizarre design choices not withstanding (like not having access to a map or being able to set waypoints on a planet), this is where I find myself enjoying the game the most. However, the actual in-space portions of No Man's Sky leave a lot to be desired.

Unfortunately, if you want a good space sim where you can be a bounty hunter, pirate or a trader and actually have a meaningful game experience then there really is nothing to see here; maybe try Elite: Dangerous instead. That game has a much more nuanced flying experience, an actual functioning inter-galactic economic system, warring factions to join or oppose and actual maps and other UI systems to keep you informed and engaged with the content.

Unless Hello Games does some major work to completely retool the space portion of this game, fix their lack of maps, waypoints and necessary user interface options then it will remain a very one-sided experience and will continue to be only half of a potentially awesome game.

At time of writing Devs are already on patch 1.07 and I can only see the game improving as it gets more refined and polished. They have already significantly stabilized and balanced the game where required. Then there are the new features which I hope will be added in time. A lot to look forward to.

I bought my PS4 in anticipation of this game, while waiting for its release I have enjoyed a couple of other titles, this has not disappointed me one bit. I had realistic expectations and grew up playing some rather innovative, if sometimes crashy and glitchy old 8 & 16-bit games. This game dares to be different where other games look good but feel rather generic. Well done I say.

No Man's Sky got SUPER hyped up and for good reason, but people took bits and pieces of what Sean Murray said and went crazy. So, here's what you can expect from No Man's Sky.

It's huge, so don't expect to get to the center of the universe in one day. In fact, don't expect to explore a planet in one day.

It holds your hand very little. You start crash landed on a planet you know nothing about and your treated as such. Your options are to figure it out on your own or to take to the internet. I suggest you figure it out on your own unless your really stumped.

It gets repetitive. You're trying to get to the center of the universe by hoping star systems. So, you gather resources as you explore planets, power your hyperdrive and move on. Rinse and repeat.

There's a TON of beauty in the midst of the repetition. Every planet, animal, alien, plant, ship etc is unique. Learn to appreciate it! T

he lore is really good so and I'm sure it's different for each race that you come in contact with. So far I've come in contact with a warrior race and a scientific race. Both are very different in how they approach and interact with my character.

Push though the mundane. There is repetition, but once you're a few star systems in you begin to see planets and alien races change. It gets more difficult and interesting. Rare materials become more commonplace. Keep going!

The game is half a GB! This alone makes the game worth $60. It is a work of mathematic art!

So, I'm sorry if this game isn't the conglomeration of every good part of every game you've ever played. You're not going to find that in No Man's Sky. What you will find is a universe to explore that is full of beauty, drama, mystery and a healthy dose of repetition. It will change over time. More will be added, bugs will be fixed. Remember Diablo 3 when it first came out? Look at it now. It's amazing! Given some time No Man's Sky will be amazing too. Right now it's just good, which is why I gave it an 8 out of 10.

To those complaining about the repetitive nature of the game-play: that comes with the territory of a procedurally generated games. It's simply impossible to create a game that builds itself without repeating elements - you're necessarily trading attention to detail for scale. This same issue is present in every other procedurally generated game out there, from the old-school roguelikes up through Elite, Binding of Isaac, and recently Necropolis. For some reason, NMS is catching this criticism much more-so than other procedural games, perhaps because many would-be NMS players were attracted by the hype and hadn't had much experience with proc

My issues with the trending outlook on the game is the increasingly common use of 'it's boring' or 'there's not enough to do!'. Thing is, for some gamers the same criticism can be leveled at the likes of Overwatch, Hearthstone, Rainbow Six to name a few. Now I'm not saying these games are bad, they serve a purpose for the people that like that sort of thing however if you don't...then the enjoyment you'll get out of those games is slim pickings.

That's my reasoning for the high score I'm giving No Man's Sky. I had no pretence or hype train tooting going into this game and frankly the main thing that drew me in was the soundtrack. Having sat down and played it though I can attest to exactly who this game speaks to and why some of its limitations are okay.

Having played the game with someone who is somewhat 'casual' when it comes to gaming the first thing that struck them was the ability to explore and craft things (however limited you might suggest those mechanics are) without the imminent threat of being tea bagged by enemies and having to learn and be good at whatever combat mechanics are in the game in order to compitently survive. For some people that's all they really want from certain games.

I fail to understand why it's kind okay for certain genres to be unmistakably niche and be reveld in because of their 'gameplay mechanics' however when something comes along which is perfect as a chill out game or something just to enjoy for what it is.

The mechanics might be repetative for some but for other's it's therapautic and satisfying. The way some people have been carrying on seems outright unprofessional.

In short, go into this game looking for a chilled out experience which can be quite eye opening and fun if you let it be.

Visually the game is pretty, yet bland at the same time. The worlds all look unique, kind of. But after a while the worlds can just be simplified: Toxic, Ice, Radiation, Hot, Rainy, Barren, Water, Nice. Even though they are all procedurally generated they all fit into at least one of those categories. Same more or less applies to all the Flora, Fauna and buildings. Don't get me wrong, at first it's really cool. But after about the 10th or so planet repetition and tedium kick in.From that point it's just the same thing over and over with practically no real payoff.

The music and sound are great. The score kind of reminds me of a cross between the soundtrack of the Dig and the ambient music of Minecraft.

For all the gripe I still enjoyed it, or at least the first 10 - 20 hours. No Man's Sky feels like it was trying too hard to be something it's not. Yet this game does give me hope. The concept is solid and I truly hope other developers use what this game does right. If anything this game is a stepping stone for other great things. A milestone in gaming, provided it doesn't get buried in its own controversy.

    Overall:
No Man's Sky is a decent game that hyped itself up too much. Clearly it could be improved allot, but we should not overlook all the things it does right. Hopefully a bigger developer might step in and apply the ideas to their game. Imagine what Bethesda or Bioware could have done with this (aside from DLC'ing it to death.)

    Tip:
Don't underestimate how far the Galactic core is. Always jump as far as your engines will allow.
Scan and upload everything you see.
Don't upgrade your initial weapon or ship more than you need to. +26 ship size and +22 Weapon size is when you focus on upgrades.
Sigma < Tau < Theta < Omega. Always aim to have the highest. Only need to have 1 of each item on the exosuit, no need stack those things.
Grenade launcher is great if you get lost in caves. Just shoot your way out.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've been following the game since the 2014 reveal, I've watched pretty much all the interviews and was very hyped for the game. As person who enjoys Sci-Fi, particular Star Trek, Stargate etc.. I thought this could be the game of my dreams.
But now after 2 weeks I have come to find the game being shallow. Most of the worlds I have seen have been varied of content, specifically animals, weather and colour pallet. But there is about 50% of the stuff (flora and fauna) you see that are all the same just a different name/colour.
The gameplay mechanics is very dumbed down from all those videos. The game is nothing like the videos. Now I will say I never expected to see anything like that 2014 E3 video, but I did expect the gameplay to be better. FInding material in the game is very very frustrating, being a Sci-Fi themed game you'd think you'd have the ability to scan for certain materials and not just hope to find some. It's become very tedious. The whole Suit and Ship upgrade system is dull, the space combat is boring. The Story is, missing and broken. All my Atlas way points take me away from the centre.
And now the actual point of the game, traveling to the centre. It's dull, it's slow and at the centre [spoiler] Its a kick in the teeth[/spolier]
I really wanted this to succeed, maybe it's my own fault in believing HG were developing a mind blowing engine. But its repetitive, un-exciting and I have no wish to play it any more.
A AAA price for a indie game, I should have known better.

They said you can travel to 18 billion planets or something but what they didn't tell us is that its 18 billion copies. When i enter a new system i feel like i just went around in a circle and ended up in the same area, every system contains the same old same, just a few planets a space station and some other things. Its just very boring, i don't mind grinding in a game but when i feel like there is no reward or purpose to grind for its just a waste of time. I feel like this is absolutely not worth 60 bucks. I think people with a lot of imagination might find some fun in it but for me its just not at all what i hoped for. The game also does not explain anything in the beginning so you basically don't have any idea what it is u gotta do. After 20 hours you're doing exactly the same as in the first hour and probably at the end of the game u pretty much have been doing the same all the time. The planets don't feel different at all, some planets might be a bit different but the only thing that is different is the colours and some animals. I probably won't be playing this game anymore because it just feels like a waste of time. Overall i think people that expect a huge game with all kinds of different worlds are going to be disappointed. Expand

Here I could amble leisurely across an endless, psychedelic universe, admiring the local flora and fauna, and engaging in the occasional bout of space combat along the way.

And I enjoyed that experience. I spent many happy hours flitting serenely across Hello Games’ universe, appeasing my adventurer’s instincts. I was mesmerised by the vibrant, stylised sci-fi visuals, the ambient soundscapes, and the gentle, soothing rhythms of exploration, discovery and documentation. There wasn’t much to do, as such, but it took a long while before the thrill of endless possibilities — and the raw excitement every time the clouds parted to reveal another unknown world — began to fade.

No Man's Sky: Hello Games has built something quite impressive, unfortunately it doesn't make for a very enjoyable game.

At exactly 21:00 on the launch day, I started up NMS and prepared for a new experience. I knew it wasn't from a big studio, so the finished product wouldn't be as polished as possible, but the premise was really interesting: survive and explore an incredible Galaxy with unique planetary systems, creatures, and aliens. It was amazing seeing the first planet, trying to gather the resources to repair my ship while interacting with the environment. The colours were beautiful in parts, and the animals humorous in their own Island of doctor Monroe way. When I finally repaired the initial engines on my ship, it was thrilling to take off and leave the planet for open space. Following this, it was a bit jaw dropping travelling through the planetary system. I began to realize just how big the scale of this game was during this time. It was all a bit mind blowing for the first couple of hours.... Once I repaired and fuelled my warp drive, I experienced another moment of excitement as I took off to a new star to begin my exploration.

It was at about 0:00, perhaps 3 or so hours in, that my enjoyment with NMS took a steep plunge. As I travelled from one star to another, explored planet after another, met one alien race then others, fought in space and on the ground, I started to see just how little resides outside of that first 3 hour experience. In just a few hours I was seeing repeat creatures, planets that I would be hard pressed to tell you how they differed beyond lighting, and the grind it takes to move around the galaxy just to see pretty much the exact same thing.

I believe Hello Games have created something impressive, something that can be so huge and just work... However the mechanics behind the game are decidedly below average, with the survival, fighting, and mining aspects feeling tacked on just to pad out the game. But the base of the game? Exploration leaves so incredibly much to be desired when after just 10-20 hours in a galaxy with 18 quintillion "uniqiue" planets, you feel like you've seen it all.

To me it seems like HG conducted the hype train, which Sony helped them create with their marketing and $60 price tag, straight to the bank. I'm sure this means HG will have the resources to make a much better game in the future, but I would prefer to wait for another studio to do it better. As I said, Hg have done something quite impressive, but it isn't usually the first mover that makes the best use of the tools available... Give this one a pass, there's a ton of potential in this genre for more well rounded and capable studios.

An eight, yeah, I think that's fair, right? Right? How can we even put a number on this game?! All anyone can do is talk about their experience because everyone's experience and tastes will be different, and therefore, we'll find differing levels of value in this.

Personally, though, I find NMS to be relaxing, awe-inspiring, and totally different than anything I've played lately.

A bit disappointed in this game. It's got a massive universe to explore but can feel a bit empty at times. Inventory management is a pain. But with all that said it has tons of cool moments, lots of variety in planets, and tons of upgrades to be found. Not bad if you're looking for a bit of a laid back experience.

I am really loving this game so far (about 16 hours in). It's a game that asks you engage your imagination (not enough games do this now) and a game which you can just get lost in for hours. Real shame that so many people don't seem to like it... It's original, stylish and inspired and I wish more games took a leaf out of Hello Games' book. Great work from such a small team.

In my honest opinion, I don't think No Man's Sky is as bad as most people say. Certainly not now that there's been a few content updates. However, it has problems aplenty. While a few mechanics could be explained in-game better than they are, once armed with the right knowledge you can settle in for some grand space exploration and some occasional laughs from the resident aliens.

The science path (scanning life forms) is quite difficult early on and the rewards really suck for it. Can take forever to track down all the animals you need for the planetary bonus which is pretty meager. So you'll need to do some some trading and or mining and or crafting on the side to stay afloat. The good news is that all of those are well implemented and money is easy to make once you know how.

Could be that not everyone will love it but I suspect you'll know if that's you or not. If you enjoy survival games and sci-fi this game is so good it might ruin your life. Especially when you land on your first planet with seriously funky wildlife - for me that was the second planet in my fifth system. Giant flying flukeworms. enormous tick monsters with tentacles everywhere, etc. etc.. That's on the edge of the galaxy too. It's supposed to get weirder closer to the center.

    Must get back to playing!

No man sky, I am going to be ready to play the game and I hope the game doesn't disappoint me because than I wasted money on a game that is made by 13 people. If this game is not a disappointment then I hope in the future update it will be easier to find players and also fix bugs

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

The world of No Man's Sky is insanely vast and beautiful, but there’s nothing to do in it! There’s no goal, no destination, no ending, nothing!

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
