Expand

I played and got the platinum trophy for NMS back in 2016. The main problem with the game is that it is not rewarding in anyway whatsoever. Everything is a grind and the crafting system over the years of updates has just turned it in to a cluster **** I would think gamers with autism love this game.

They built the universe and some good gameplay. No they just have to build upon it.

    Old review:
Very similar case to Elite (which I still take as a scam and thus a clear 0/10). I understand what might have been the purpose, yet the actual game.. Well it's not a game. It is an interesting and maybe promising concept alas absolutely out of the reach of a present technology. Such project requires enormous computing capabilities to deliver a truly playable and enjoyable experience. In vast future filled with quantum computers NMS may be given as an example of what our generation had wanted to create but was limited by very ancient technology (simple Turing machine principle). Therefore one simply cannot appreciate NMS as a computer game. I also dont agree presenting this "technological concept" to a broad public as a game. And there is absolutely no excuse for that in creating a "very sophisticated algorithm" for a full price. If an engineer wishes to create and design complex algorithms his place is either at a uni or private company willing to pay him for such activities. But to cover his programming ambitions for high complex algorithms with a creating and selling a computer game it's an inexcusable deception and should not be tolerated. Awarding this weird 'procedural generation algorithm' project 1/10 is therefore a completely and utterly deserved in my opinion.

But after years of the team not giving up we have No Man Sky 2019, which is not only a very different game to what was released in 2016, but its is one of the most original, technically impressive and even industry leading games , this generation. There is almost infinite things to do in this game , and its great fun, but the fact you can do it all in VR is what elevates this game to a 10/10. Just like RE7 its a great game on its own , but when you are able to feel like you are in the world and the sense of immersion and atmosphere is that realistic, it elevates the whole experience. the only negative I could give the game today is that it is a bit Blurry on PSVR, ive seen many other games look much sharper on PSVR which makes me wonder in they are taking advantage of the PS4 Pro hardware yet.. Its not entirely fair to mark a game down for the hardware limitations with such new tech, though, so for me the game sits at 10/10 in 2019. Expand

I have only been to five separate star systems and my exo-suit already has thirty slots. My Spaceship on the other hand only has nineteen but I am saving up for a ship that has twenty-eight. The graphics are about as good as your going to get for the scope of the game. The combat is secondary to the exploration so don't go into this game expecting COD style of combat. The resource system is ok given that you will be constantly using them if you take your sweet time exploring a planet (I usually take an hour or two). Since the ships and weapons come with upgrades already built in, you don't really have to worry about building upgrades right off the bat. If you do find upgrades that are better then what are currently on the weapon then just dismantle and craft the better ones, same thing with ships ect. The mix of planets, animals, different aliens make this game enjoyable but still feel like something is missing. For all these people who have been complaining about the game, they need to put more time in before reviewing. as someone who spent 60 USDs on this, i learned the hard way to never go digital unless we're talking serious sales, the game at the current state of it (and honestly, i'd say at foreseeable future) is worth $25 at maximum.

when you've expected a vibrant world you're hit with the staticness of it, the crushing loneliness makes for some terrible game, some may call it a "relaxing" experience, but i don't, there is nothing of character in the entirety of the game, everything and everyone you meet is as boring as the rocks you'll mine for iron, i tried to make my own fun by learning the languages of the races (one of very rare pros) but that got old quickly once i learned that it takes more than 400 words for each race (3+ atlas), something even the game recognizes by giving you the top rank in this category at about 250 words, interloper.

to add to an already broken game, if you've seen a water planet, a rock planet, garden world and an ice planet, you've seen it all now.

for now, the only thing you should do to this game is a) stay away from it if you know about it (75% of those who may read this) or b) wait for a good sale (50% at least) before getting a copy, and NOT DIGITAL, you'll grow tired of it before you know.

The flipside to this gaming marvel is the overall lack of purpose you feel while exploring your 'universe'.

No matter what you do or how much time you invest in NMS, you invariably feel that you're achieving nothing and thus, wasting your time. The problem is that there is TOO MUCH to explore and TOO MUCH to do. The lack of story is sorely felt at every second. Ship and inventory maintenance is tedious in the extreme with a persistent focus on upgrading storage capacity. Even leaving the planet that you're on or just taking off to cruise to somewhere else is ruined by the fact that you need to constantly refuel your landing thrusters. Better yet, if you crash your ship, you're back to square one and need to repair everything like you did at the start of the game.

I'm happy that I experienced this much touted game, but even happier at the prospect of NOT PLAYING IT AGAIN. Gaming is meant to be fun, but at the same time not feel like a repetitive chore or feel like a seemingly endless task. Hello Games needs to realise this if they want to make another contribution to the industry.

The soundtrack is great, it does a great job of setting the tone and atmosphere of this experience. The art style is very good, too. Very nice visuals. And the sense of scale is great too. The planets are massive, the landscapes are very sweeping and lengthy. But this game does a lot more things wrong. The planets all look exactly the same, you do exactly the same things on every damn planet, and last but not least, the 'center of the universe' is very poorly executed. When you tap the button to go there, the center just teleports even further away. And if you follow it, the center just constantly escapes your grasp every damn time. This stuff is completely stupid and illogical. With multiple delays, huge anticipation, and a full 60$ price at launch, No Man's Sky feels like an unfinished, poorly built tech demo. After all the hype, all the excitement, you're left with a disappointing game that lacks both content and diversity. No Man's Sky fails to deliver the endless exploration we've been promised. It gives you an enjoyable experience for about 6 hours but that's it, from then on it's just a sad, sad journey through a boring and empty world.

I made the mistake of pissing of a little sentinel. Jump in my ship and try to run. Nope, sending fighters after me, and you can’t outrun them. Got one, almost a second but the third took me out. That’s actually fine. No problem there. The problem is when they spawn you and you get in to your ship and try to get to the objective… even if you are holding down boost until your finger starts to hurt, the time to destination actually slows down and starts going up. That’s right, your grave and the objective point are both moving away from you. On the planet…. As you are going top speed towards them. Needless to say I never got there. Like an idiot I held on for 8 minutes with the timer not going down and never getting to the place I died. Immediately shut the game down and uninstalled. I know I’m late to the game in playing and reviewing this thing, but in the off chance you are thinking about buying this thing? And you happen upon my review? Please, spare yourself the aggravation and irritation this game give you…. And go get a root canal. That’ll be way more enjoyable.

I read a lot about repetition in this game being very stale. From one perspective, that's perfectly understandable, but perhaps I choose a different point of view. For example, I think GTA and COD are overwhelmingly stale and repetitive. MOBA games are very repetitive, Destiny is the very definition of repetitive; yet many people like those games and while consistently complaining about them still religiously play them. Thus my review recommends that gamer's embrace the new idea's No Man's Sky is trying to create. See if you can't join the developers in the feelings that they have about this game. Though, read GameSpot's review for a precise description.

This game exceeds my expectations and is an example I will use henceforth of how one can disagree with the critics. We all know the internet mob is emotional and undependable, but the real surprise for me is that even my most trusted critics, while making great points, don't rate this game high enough in my opinion. It's fantastic and I'm thoroughly excited about it.

Perhaps since I kept out of social media and read some weekly articles over time, I was never really on the melodramatic hype wagon like everyone else. Though most assuredly I was hyped about this game for almost a year. MOST THINGS that Sean Murray talked about is in the game. Speaking from just over 20 hours of game play, I feel he was very precise and gracefully cautious with his details. The more he puts out on topic of this game and the more I learn about his team, the better I understand what this game is about. Thus I find a certain way of enjoying it that seems totally new and fresh to me. It's not really like any other game, in a big picture kind of way.

Pros: It's a lot of fun to fly around space and in and out planets/space stations/solar systems. I like discovering new plants, regions, animals, resources, aliens, and languages. The game has no tutorial, which to me, thrust me into a complete "explorer type" experience. Basically, throwing me into a unforgiving universe and forcing me to figure s*** out for myself. Thus, I teach myself damn near everything and therefor have a more personal connection with my own gaming story line, both good and bad.

Cons: Combat is meh, I feel Space Combat is fun, but still meh. Loneliness is a good and bad thing, comparable to my feelings when playing Shadow of the Colossus. The biggest con is of course not having multiplayer. But, that does disagree with the founding intention of the dev's plan for the game, so I tend to be forgiving of this aspect as I like the current "explorer type" experience.

Amazing game which is now the best game of space exploration ever. One of the few games receiving continuous free updates with tons of content. That was until I began seeing the same creatures on different planets just with a different skin color. I gave the game a pass because there are quadrillions of planets it would be near impossible to make different creatures on every planet. Now the game started to become quite boring when I found myself only mining and exploring that is just about it. No Building, Fighting is very difficult, and there's nothing else to do! Even played this game while on Shrooms and found myself getting bored.

The best of this game is the environment, sound and soundtrack. The place where you can see the things you are carrying reminds me the old free rpg games I use to play as a kid in my computer. Don't hesitate on destroying things because you'll see that you can't carry much things (destroy cheap things or things that you are not going to use or that are easy to find). The story is told as the old RPGs; I mean is more description about what's going on than dialogues. You could say this is a kind of an old rpg game but with good graphics (and a bit of action). I know I could beat the game but because is going to be more of the same with few new things I'm going to stop playing. It's not a bad game per se but in my opinion it should be shorter (and also let you carry more things when you start). If you play this game, you're going to need a few hours to settle and get used to everything. I myself thought on quitting more than once but I recommend you to play at least about 10 hours and from that point if you want to keep playing go on but that's up to you. Definitely not a game for everybody but if you want to try something new give it a try.

P.S: Also, go straight for the main story and don't do side quests unless you feel to.

No Man's Sky Image This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No man's Sky fails in a few areas (1). Cannot Scan bird life from ground without killing a bird , there is often no way to target these birds until you find a targeting updgrade which I cannot build due to needing aqua spheres and it means you have to waste a lot of time shooting then finding the thing you killed. (2) cannot take upgrades or stuff on your tools and ships to your new ship or weapon which is rather stupid if its a crafting game as you would have the know how on how to uninstall something you equipped. (3) Rewards from NPCs are not rewards as you can find a better Multi-tool on occasion about 5 seconds after talking to an NPC who upgraeds your multi-tool. (4) cannot buy technology or things to craft. (5) evil glitch that makes planets 100% and even if you have got the creatures on the planet to 100% in the 1.3 patch you can't redeem it meaning my zoology can't go up and stops the platinum trophy already reached milestones for most of the game. (6) No way to mark or map areas. (7) No way to visit previous outposts. 8 Ship combat has no way to lock on enemy currently (unless you need an upgrade of some form), Ship combat also slows down your ship. 9. Sometimes when you scan a new life form it won't register to records. 10. No real civilzations of alien life e.g proper towns. 11. Creatures can feel samely after visting a couple of planets. 12 finding all creatures on a planet is tedious and boring as it took me 8 hours to find all the species on a planet after leaving the first solar system then coming back to it later and then I couldn't upload it to get a +1 to my zoology when a game wastes my time its going to get a bad score. 13 No out posts or beacons marks so you can head straight for one to do 1 of the games 4 boring mini missions (shelter, montolith etc). 14 no way to mark a waypoint for later so crashed ships are often just broken dreams. (It gets a six for it can be relaxing, the annoying birds could be seen as a crap mini game (what i mean by this is if you wanted to play a pacafist is that you can't as you won't be able to scan birds) "Can i hit this" and the space travel is good as Xs do mark where you have been in the universe which makes it seem pirate like if not cliche, I am disappointed in myself however for not waiting for review like I normally do, as it seems a costly mistake considering I got this instead of other games for birthday. In the 1.08 update this game loses a futher point for not fixing my problem with the game after 3 patches so it goes from an okay 6 to a desired pass it by. if it had fixed my problem with the game by now the record glitch then it might have moved up a point but i am not going to further review this game ... decided to review as of 16/09/2016 again and made my mind up that's its a relaxation simulator its fine to play in small amounts when you just want something to look at but very little to do its gained two points as a way to relax in short intervals. The birds can also now be scanned but the 100% zoology glitch is still there I only lost 1 planet but I lost a lot of hours getting it to 100% so i am still a little annoyed.

It was definitely hyped to the highest degree but If you watched closely and looked at all the content what was released was close to what I expected. Since release Hello Games have been constantly updating and working hard polishing, refining and improving No Mans Sky. There is so much content there that it really does keep giving.

If you want to explore the stars and see what is out there you may like me find this game enchanting. Initially there are some challenges, surviving on early harsh planets, constantly finding required materials but as you develop your suit, your ship and your understanding you will reap the benefit of not feeling desperately tied to a grind and can really enjoy seeing what you find. Setting yourself goals of making money, improving your suit, upgrading or replacing your ship, getting your own freighter, building your own fleet, finding weird and wonderful planets or systems then sertling within one on your own base either alone or with friends. There is a lot to do and enjoy here. If you are a player that needs a clean narrative to follow there are story missions to follow but these are quite light and not enough for me to recommend this game to you. If everything I have mentioned appeals to you, you like me may really enjoy this game. I’ve played around 170 hours across 2 saves ( one solo and one multiplayer so I wasn’t too far ahead of a new joining friend when multiplayer was released)

The biggest thing for me, causing me to rate this an 8 is that it is a truly unique game, unlike anything else I’ve played. And that for me is deserving of recognition.

Not ever two NPCs in game are connected to each other. Basically, it's a Minecraft-like space game without crafting, end dragon, modding and multi-playing, but with extra bugs. I would say it worth 8 score if it cost only $20.

This game is great for exploration aspects, which is how it was designed. The high initial price tag and ridiculous hype created much more negative reaction than it deserves.

The greatest aspect of the game is that you can name the planets and fauna (and flora is your really keen) and know someone else may discover it (though it should be easier for someone to discover your planets).

The greatest aspect of the game is that you can name the planets and fauna (and flora is your really keen) and know someone else may discover it (though it should be easier for someone to discover your planets). When I was doing it properly I found I actually came up with cool interesting names for all the planets and animals in a system. I think I could actually be a good explorer after all! Other times it was a laugh to see how obscene I could make the name and have it pass the profanity filter! This by far the best aspect of the game.

Whilst there is one really good aspect to the game, there are a number of negatives. The grinding is very tedious, I never bothered with any of the new technologies anyway. The space battles were OK, but mostly I wished they would go away, I wasn't harming anyone. There was also a lot of reading required!

For all the well publicized tedious irritating aspects this game has one brilliant aspect in the exploration that is overlooked. This game would not interest most people, but if you has some interest in being able to name the animals and planets in our galaxy, this is a great simulator. By now this game must be a sensible price and the tedious aspects are probably worth baring for this!

And this game is a perfect example of that. But if you ignore the hype, ignore the exceptionally high expectations, what you are left with is a game that completely fulfills its intended purpose of appeasing interstellar wanderlust. As a species we are obsessed with the sky. Our ancients used to worship it, study it, and live by it. Outer space is more than a just a vast place. It is a terrifying and curious testament to what it means to be human in this universe. It intrigues and fascinates us. All the while reminding us of how small and insignificant we must be in a place so extensively vast. I am fueled by a hunger for knowledge. And as a child I would look at the night sky and be overcome with the desire to just get a glimpse of what's out there. This game finally gave me that glimpse. When I first played it I was returned to that small child and I was able to satisfy his cravings if only slightly. Of course the game could have been better. Sure. I can list a million differences I'd have made. But can any of us truly thing of a game we wouldn't at least change something about? I firmly believe that this games problem was an overshot of their market. Far too much anticipation on a far too massive scale. If the game makers had remained humble, and didn't try to oversell it, I believe we'd see a much different response. This is not a game for everyone. And it should not have been marketed as such. This is a game for a very specific demographic. The people needing to ease the heavy sensation of interstellar wanderlust. The people who just need to taste the stars for no other reason other than the sake of doing so. Expand

That's all and good for a mechanic to progress in the game, but there is never anything to look forward to progressing towards. The center of the galaxy is a very abstract goal, and not one that makes the journey feel important. There is a sense of pointlessness to progressing in No Man's Sky. Every jump to a new star system feels like a fruitless task. Each upgrade you find, except for new slots to your suits inventory, feel practically useless. There is never any sense that you are actually gaining anything or doing anything of value, no matter how many credits you accumulate or ship and weapon upgrades you unlock. That is the biggest problem with No Man's Sky in my opinion. Let alone all the missing features, the meat of the game is fundamentally broken. Expand

In the sense that not every planet has fauna and flora, which makes finally finding species much more exciting. I’ve been more inclined to go exploring other planets due to this change, and have found they have unique climates and weather systems. On that note however, planets don’t have natural phenomenon as you’d expect on planets. You won’t find Volcanos, waterfalls, or geysers or even rainbows. Solar systems still don’t have Gas Giants, or anything close to realistic scaling. Most caves look the same on every planet and usually contain the same resources.

Nanites are a new currency players can find throughout the universe in various places, like searching damaged machinery, blasting sentinels and more. At Space Stations, players can trade Nanites with one of three races for blueprints. This seemed to have reduced the previous random chances of finding new technologies by themselves, and relying on trading Nanites with species for technology at Space Stations. The name Nanite implies a microscopic device. Yet for some reason, they take inventory space. It would have been better if they were tracked just like units, in the top UI. In addition to nanites, you require good standing with species to trade with their vendors. I haven’t found getting a higher standing with factions hard, so it seems to be a redundant requirement to buy technology.

Base Building in combination with the Exocrafts has breathed fresh air into the vacuum of No Mans Sky. I’ve found that it’s so much more rewarding to go exploring for a new, more beautiful base than before. I spent hours even off stream driving over vast terrain and surfing over giant oceans to find huge amounts of resources, put them in my cargo, and bring them back to my base for sorting or future selling. The best part, is you get to make a planet your own. Since most of my friends have moved onto newer games, I haven’t been able to take advantage of base sharing, which allows you and another player to share a base.

While all this new content really expanded the content and features of the game, the game still struggles with quality control, especially on PC. I’ve encountered multiple blockers like the client crashing, linear quests lines breaking, and more. Even smaller, annoying bugs like not being properly sat in your ship when boarding persist. This may have to do with during development, Hello Games didn’t have an in-house QA team, and relied on Sony’s QA.

To be fair, the game is really trying to do something no other game has done before. While it lacks in quality control, it makes up for in the sheer beauty of the game and unique gameplay. I really think if No Man’s Sky was released as Early Access, and reduced the price a bit, the game wouldn’t have received such hard criticism. There may have also been an expectations problem. No Man’s Sky was marketed as a AAA game, with an indie developer and publisher. If you can find this game on sale, or you have some extra money on hand, the game is much better than at launch and worth a try.

Story wise everything kind of makes sense in this universe when the revelation bombs hit. Though the story and/or the copy/paste side missions is not what drives my interest in this game.

The Developers give you a lot of cool fun unlock-able stuff to mess about with on land, in underwater and in space. The main personal carrot on the stick is all the researching and chasing after new tech or rare/exotic gear/equipment. All to the backdrop of looking at colorful vibrant worlds while listening to the great in game soundtrack. The game does offer other things like mining, base building, trading, bounty hunting, fleet management, farming, pets and cataloguing.

The game is far from complex or deep. Pretty easy to pick up and put down on normal difficulty and not much of challenge. It does have survival mode which is not even that hard ( perma-death as of yet to be tried ). This a pretty chill laid back gaming experience for sure. Took my mind of the Pandemic BS for sure.

2021 Updates have tanked the frame rates. PC and Console gamer hey developers no excuse not to put graphical and effects slider bars/toggles in the console versions. Which consoles games tend to run worse anyway, because they don't have beefier or upgradable tech. WTF is this 20-25 FPS crap?

Game comes with in built VR. The pixelation is alll pretty bad and the planets in space didn't look very VR. The VR cockpit was pretty cool, but not as amazing as Infinite War cockpit. After trying several different VR games the motion sickness has finally gone. Still with all that plastic and rubber on the head? Head overheat happens pretty quicky. Yeah even when using a massive floor fan to try and counter it. Maybe I need to use PS/VR in the winter or something?

"There is no place in your inventory" ... I can resume the game to this sentence. And you lose the item if you do not have any place! why we can not have the item on the ground???
I spent 1 hour to craft item to unlock a suit amelioration just to... lose it, a bug! the item is not in my inventory...
I stopped playing to this game because the inventory system, it is so annoying, even the UI. And the crafting system, not easy to know what you can do, can not do.

Within the world of video games is the great misunderstood. Walk simulator, beautiful landscapes, history without history and a disconnected online are some of the positive points of this game, for the rest, go to the real world and you will see that perhaps the game is more like reality than a game of fiction.

In fact, it has changed and improved so much since it's release, that any reviews written before 2019 are totally and completely misrepresenting what this game is today. When I first bought it, I played for roughly 5 hours and after one massively disappointing experience, I put the game away, for what I thought would be forever. However, mid 2021 I started reading that NMS had changed drastically. Without reading further in to it, I decided to give it another look.
That look turned into approximately 500 hours of playtime and platinum trophies on both PS4 and PS5. I couldn't believe how much content had been packed in this game. So much so, that there were times I'd just zone out while playing, trying to comprehend how this game was capable of doing what it was doing, and how it was possible. While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
