This game is probably a 4 or 5 out of 10 but @ £50 I have to knock it down to 3 because value for money is also part of a review score. 90% of the time value for money is not mentioned because most games are priced about what the going rate is. But no so with this game. Even at half the price I wouldn't be happy.

For £14.99 I would give the game a score of 5 out 10 and that's being generous.

If you actually plan to beat this game, you should know that you will spending hours and hours crafting the same item over and over again. Crafting this item will involve pointing a handheld laser beam at a few different kinds of rocks. There's no skill or thinking required. You just walk around like a robot mining the same materials over and over again.

I was so excited for this game. For years. I even fooled myself into thinking I liked it for the first 10 hours. But it's a terrible, terrible game. There's nothing here for anyone. Please don't get this game.

One of the greatest hypes of E3 and I must say that I personally did not have great expectations, but this game turned out to be complete disaster. Developers openly lied and promised us many awesome features and exciting gameplay, but instead of that we get boring, repetitive and unfinished game that is a mere shadow of No man's sky presented at E3.

    Well.
I'm a few hundred hours in, but lets just get some basics out of the way.
The graphics are fine, a colourful stylistic rendering of a sci-fi universe is pretty bang on the nail with the makers description, limited to 30fps on the PS4, nevertheless, they do the job. You regularly come across some amazing vistas in this game, so, yes HG, we'll let you off with that one.
    Now gameplay.
To say this is a missed opportunity is a massive understatement.
    Let's start with the NPCs.
They sit, they move their heads and they make gestures. That's it. You never see them anywhere else. Not wandering around like you, not even shambling to another room.
Apart from interactions in the hut or space station they are glued to, their offerings create no tension and have no ramifications anywhere in the game. Pointless.
When your 'reputation' is increased via these encounters, it means nothing. If I'm favourable with one, the other does not try to gun me down in space (not that it's ever really made clear WHO is trying to do that anyway).
    Money. Useless.
The end game for this might be better ships or tech. The game gives the tech away, you can't buy it, only materials. the ships may look quite different, but none really offer anything approaching different capabilities.
So, you find a ship eventually that looks nice, has enough space, and that's that. No reason to change.
I could go on and on.
No missions, no tension, alien bases EVERYWHERE. Recycled noises, animals, plants, planets. No territorial issues in the local or galactic maps.
it's essentially an interactive screen-saver tech demo.

I hear HG games have announced "base building".
Why would I need to build a base when every single planet has millions of shelters on, and the galactic map is so unfriendly towards tracking destinations, or POI's or anything else.

    Very poor.

Exploration, discovery, adventure, and variation have always been the four aspects I deemed essential to an open-world experience, so while looking at No Man's Sky, a game which technically tries to deliver on all four of these aspects, I want to determine what differentiates this game from something like Breath of the Wild or Red Dead Redemption. Both of which I believe are the best of the best in all four of these areas. In terms of variety, I think where No Man's Sky fails is how it executes its variation with gameplay. The fact that it is procedurally generated means that this game will undeniably have easily distinguishable wildlife and environments, so in this area above all others, I thought the game would be able to execute it correctly. However all the variation is completely surface level. None of it changes the way you approach the game or traverse an area, and all it does is make some areas cumbersome to navigate. Now look at Breath of the Wild, the complete opposite of No Man's Sky in this perspective. Most of these shrines may look the same, but the variety in the micro-challenges and small puzzles they present you with work wonders to make them fresh and constantly surprising. The environments aren't just designed that way because that looks the best, their variation forces the player to make different preparations or use different gear and weapons depending on which they plan on venturing into. Traversing mountainous areas is completely different from traversing Hyrule Field because they're both laid out completely differently and require different techniques to move through them. This helped by the large selection of rewards one can hope to find. This directly ties to No Man's Sky's hours upon hours of exploration. Exploring is the very purpose of No Man's Sky, and is the core gameplay from which everything else stems. In this, No Man's Sky fails because, the only goal in the game is to mine for materials. Occasionally there will be a new creature or environment that may be visually interesting, however they all act essentially identically to every other creature and environment in the game. There is no purpose to simply exploring and looking for things of interest in No Man's Sky, because there will never be anything out of the ordinary to find. Nothing that offers anything more than a new sky-box to mine things in. Nothing ever feels new or surprising, so the discovery aspect completely fails as well. Red Dead Redemption, by contrast, differentiates every town and landmark due to the activities one is able to do there. No Man's Sky, however briefly, does understand this. The first hour of this game easily delivers one of the strongest feelings of exploration in any game as the player is able to go wherever they wish and do whatever they wish, until they realize that wherever they go, everything they do is a carbon copy of whatever it was they were doing before. The sheer fact that mining is the core gameplay mechanic in No Man's Sky simultaneously hinders the game's feeling of adventure, which requires a feeling of progression and journey. The easiest way for a game hoping to achieve this feeling is to demonstrate that the player is strong enough to take down foes that were deadly at the beginning of the game. With a goal in mind, a player can feel a sense of adventure by taking their own steps to accomplish that goal. The very purpose of Breath of the Wild is to deliver an adventure. The player can nearly constantly see Hyrule Castle, and thus are always reminded of their goal as they go about preparing for it in whatever way they deem necessary. In terms of what I value in an open-world game, No Man's Sky is an abject failure, and despite how amazing the initial half-an-hour to an hour was, I still cannot justify giving No Man's Sky any score higher than a 2 out of 10. The universe is huge but what makes it good? Thats it, its just "Big". Travelling through out the entire universe is boring and just going from one planet to another is just a chore and just feels like it takes too long. There is no story and no real goal for this game, so overall you just feel useless and underpowered. You start off trying to fix your ship but it gets overly boring from there. There is no multiplayer (Which was a huge selling point for the game). There was no caves to explore, no customizable FOV and best of all. The graphics looked like it was straight barf! In the gameplay trailers we were shown huge beautiful worlds. But in No Mans Sky we are just given an optimization pile of trash. There was no interest in the game and it wasn't difficult or have any difficulty in it at all. Atleast the game is playable ill give it that. And it did feature the main theme. But what good is the main theme if you cant do anything interesting. Overall I give No Mans Sky a 4/10. Do not buy this game. Maybe if it was free, maybe...

    Cons:
    No multiplayer.
    No mountains.
    No deep caves.
    No deep sea exploration.
    No forests.
    No customizable FOV.
    No challenge.
    No interesting NPC.
    No story.
    No ending

    Pros:
Atleast they tried (or did they..)

The game is worth the $20 price point suggested by quite a few people but unless there are some earth shattering updates announced, and soon, I may just throw my hat in with those screaming fraud.

I still contend concept art seen in pre-release trailers do not raise to the level of "promised features that never manifested" and none of my disappointment for the game has to do with that oddly contemptuous online debate.

I also don't think the game is in anyway improved by adding hyper realistic planetary physics, the ability to spend uncounted hours slowly crawling from one star to another, the ability to fly into the suns of the different galaxies found, or the lack of in your face baked in multiplayer capabilities as in nearly every discussion of this game pre-release it was driven home pretty hard the experience would be a solitary one that only occasionally saw you stumble across another player.

    What changed my mind from rabid fan boy to disgruntled whiner is as follows;

The game is boring because of how little "procedurally generated content" actually manifests. In a game with no other plot points, story lines, or objectives this was the games only real hook or selling point so to find this concept is only robustly applied to an extremely small set of game details is a major let down.

The phrase "procedurally generated" is used with such a loose relationship to the actual definition of both words it's easy to see why people feel swindled.

The animals you're able to discover all share the same dozen or so basic body types with probably two dozen or more different appendages that just get randomly swapped around but even then only to a certain degree and the flora, ships, NPC alien races, colonial outposts, monoliths, ruins, and plaques all suffer the same problem.

Until it's pointed out the lack of flowing water, sand, or other obviously missing planetary features at first seem to be part of the randomly generated magic of exploration until you discover it's just not present anywhere in the game.

It's at first very hard to upgrade weapons, suit, and ship but then incredibly easy until you discover in an "infinite" universe you've essentially become nigh invincible which is fun but only if there's a reason to wield those abilities and sadly, there's really not, save for the occasional easy to beat NPC pirate ships.

You are constantly being attacked by pirates in space but never see evidence of them in the games otherwise non-existent story line despite constantly running into the same three alien races.

There are many beautiful details that could, and hopefully someday will, lead to rich story lines and sub plots that entice at first only to abruptly cease to serve any point or have any relevance when you discover they're just more repetitive aspects to a planet you will see varied slightly the next time you touch down.

    That's about it.

I would give this game a ten out of ten if there were any small indicators from Hello Games major content patches were even just being planned with tentative dates but the absolute silence from them since the beginning of September, when bug squashing patches were being released almost weekly with zero patch notes, leads me to believe the furious backlash from the gaming community has forced Sony to demand the bug squashing patches but otherwise shutter the entire foray into this game and its creators in an attempt to save face and minimize financial blow back.

And sadly I am still dissapointet. You can clearly see it got a lot better but for me the whole idea still doesn't work. Unlimited planets to explore sounds amazing in theorie but in reality this is only a game for people who really love the survival-colleting recources-upgrade&build things aspect. There is no exciting gameplay nothing happens on these planets. If you explore your landing zone you literally saw the whole planet there are no mysterious caves, forrests or other things you can explore. The animals and plants still look very repetitive. There is nothing happening on these planets only thing you can do is collecting recources thats the only purpose of them. I think this is very dissapointing because what's the point of a whole universe to explore when everything is so boring it isn't worth exploring. Like I said for me the idea sounds great and they did their best but in reality it doesn't work. It would be a much nicer game if there are only 100 planets to explore but every planet has the magic of a world like the worlds in Gof of War do. Sorry if my review is wrong and there are beautiful and exciting planets out there, but I never saw one sadly. Expand

The lifeforms are all too similar. The only difference you'll be seeing is extra limbs and/or larger smaller sizes of the same recopies.

The most important thing worth mentioning is the controversial misleading or false claims about features in the game from the now infamous (and absent), developer. There are no desert planets or large sand worms or unique lifeforms as shown in the trailer. Space battles are very limited compared to the official trailer.

If that isn't enough, the ending slaps you in the face instead. Interested in what the creators of the game might have in store for you at the center of the galaxy? Umm well, here is a hint: watch The Sopranos ending at 1 minute.

I am really disappointed with this game. I understood perfectly well what it is (or what rather it was advertised as) before picking it up for full price.

    What I was expecting:
    1. The game that is concentrated on exploration of amazing and exotic alien planets and star systems.
    2. Cataloguing various strange species of animals and plants. Some I would not have thought about if I haven't seen them before
    3. I was expecting unique planets, species and plants. I was expecting incredible generation engine for everything I have mentioned.
    4. Cool flying mechanic as I have always dreamed of my own spaceship

    What did I get:

    1. NMS is a really buggy game (first crash after 40 minutes of gameplay). I have played the game for about 15-20 hours on versions 1.03 and 1.04. I have encountered the total of about 7-10 crashes.

Scanning flying creatures is extremely difficult (you have to point crosshair exactly on little red dot below flying creature and it doesn't always register). You can waste up to 5-10 minutes scanning flying animal if you're unlucky.

    2. Animals and especially plants are VERY REPETITIVE. This is the worst thing you can say about a game which is sold on the premise of infinite procedurally generated universe with each planet unique. Some plants can be found on every planet. Some plants differ very, very slightly from planet to planet.

Animals are generated by attaching body parts of different animals together. For example - I have found eagle with bunny's head. These body parts are varied by size/colour/length. There are people on internet who have found exact same animals as me. I have found the same animals on several planets (or almost exactly the same animals).

This kills this game. I don't expect to be amazed by yet another planet. I see everywhere almost the same vegetation and same animals. I was expecting body parts not to be predetermined by human developers but rather be generated by math functions.

    3. Gameplay mechanics are not only boring, but also tiresome. Inventory size is the only driver in this game. Inventory management is tiresome. If construction if item A requires 4 pieces of item B, you cannot create instantly item A, but have to first create 4 pieces of item B (which never stacks).

Consider this. You start with about 10 free inventory slots. You collect some precious stuff and are left with 2 inventory slots. You find better ship which is crashed. To fix it you need to craft 4 pieces of item B and therefore 5 free inventory slots. Well, you have to throw out everything you've collected. You want to tag this place and come back later after you sell stuff? No, there's no place tagging in this game.

Surviving in this game is what takes up most of your time but it's boring and actually takes away your attention from what is important. Life support tells you that it's low on power every 25% (even at 75%, which is just stupid). You also have to recharge your mining laser and ship. It takes about half your playtime. Mining is boring. Point at rocks, pull the trigger and stop thinking.

What should be cool is finding animals. You get the biggest money rewards for cataloguing all animals on the planet and game lets you know how many more are left. And that's about it - if there's one left and you spent 3 hours on planet, there's absolutely no mechanic to help you. You're tired of this place and would like to travel to other planet but on the other hand you're one species away from big reward. It is not pleasant.

    4. Alien interactions are limited to small puzzles and knowing as many of their language's words as possible. For example, alien wants something from you and you can pick from 3 options: give him A, B or C. If you pick right, they teach you some new tech. If you pick wrong it reduces your reputation with these species. Reputation is not worth much. With high enough rep, aliens can heal you, fix your ship etc.

Most interactions with alien ruins and various stations/buildings are limited. There are 2-3 mini puzzles that are recurring. It's actually ridiculous:
    a. You see 3-4 numbers and have to guess fourth. Numbers are ALWAYS moved to the left (1234, 2341, 3412, ????) and you have to guess fourth.
    b. You see 3-4 numbers. Every next number is multiplication of previous and in each step multiplier is increased by 1 (12, 24, 72, ???)
    c. You see 3-4 numbers. Every next number is the previous one with some value subtracted. The amount subtracted is increased by 1 in each step (72, 66, 61, ???)
The funny part is - THESE PUZZLES ARE STATIC AND THERE ARE ONLY 3 TYPES. VALUES ARE REPEATED. Even such simple puzzle is not randomized and generated. After a few you memorize correct answer and don't even read them.

    5. I'm running out of character limit. I'll put it shortly - developers lied. A lot of stuff from trailers was cut. I don't even care about multiplayer, but where is that cool big ship wreckage from icy planet?

I feel cheated. YOU MESSED WITH MY CHILDHOOD DREAMS.

    2. Bugs. I have discovered all species on 4 planets yet have only been credited with the 'journey achievement' on 2. The last planet which I am still on, I spent the past 3 days looking for one more creature, to find it and get a 15/15 found but only a 93% completed rate. After this, I have zero incentive to continue scanning and searching for creatures as I gain nothing from it, except wasted time.

    3. Graphics. IMO the graphics are actually fine, except in the most recent update I find the pop-ins much worse.

    4. Pirates and space combat. I probably should list this at number 1 as I find it the most annoying, I can hardly travel in space without being attacked. Since I can't fly away from them and space combat is horrible, I just let myself get killed and fly back to retrieve my items. Oh and did I mention the space combat is horrible? I have managed to destroy one ship, but it was on its own. Usually you're taking on 3 ships at once.

    5. Things really aren't that different. I have been to countless planets and systems, but after you've seen a dozen planets with different creatures etc. it all ends up looking the same. I have found 'space whales' on 3 planets so far that are all absolutely identical. I can't say I feel the excitement of finding something new when I land on a new planet now.

    6. Maxing things out happens fairly quickly. After about 50 hours my exosuit is maxed out with 48 slots. After you purchase one ship with say 20-25 slots (around 2-4 million units), all you have to do is find crashed ships and gain an extra slot until your happy. I'm at a 30 slot ship despite only buying 1 ship so far worth 1.8million units that had 24 slots. In other words I have 4.8 million units now but see little reason to spend on anything now.
Also gaining all the basic blueprints can be accomplished in just a matter of hours. Afterwards you just keep finding or receiving ones you already know.

    7. Cost. I judge all games I buy on cost vs enjoyment I get. It's $80CDN which is what AAA games cost here. I rarely purchase games at this price as I'll wait for price drops or sales, but I figured it would be worth the gamble as I was looking for a more relaxing game to play. The last game I spent $80 on was Uncharted 4, which is a well polished and amazing game that I can say gave me $80 worth of enjoyment.
Spending $80 on a game that crashes constantly, has bugs that doesn't recognize your progress simply isn't worth it. I actually do like NMS, but I would say it's a $40CDN game at most.

    8. Inventory. I nearly hit submit before remembering the inventory. The worst thing is if your ship or exosuit are full, then you can't see materials required to craft or add technology, meaning you must either sell or just destroy items to free up a slot.

    The Good:
    1. Well, my favourite thing to do in games like GTAV or Just Cause3 is wander around and do my own thing. That's pretty much what NMS is. Wander around and do you own thing. I find that relaxing and a nice change of pace from other games I play.

Despite having more negatives I do actually enjoy NMS and it could still be a good, solid game in the future. However in its current state at its current price, I simply could not recommend this game to anyone.

What a waste of time. No content. No momentum. No progression. No ending. It has about 20 hours worth of compelling gameplay before you start to feel suckered. People will say it's a "chill game" or that "it's all about the journey", but there is no journey. Every planet is nearly identical. Every system is nearly identical. Every upgrade is nearly identical.

I played it at a friends house who was very disappointed in the game. It was originally priced at $30. Why Hello Games & Sony raised it to $60 is beyond me. Probably because the hype was so big. Stay far, far away from this garbage. If you want to try it, wait for it to come to PS+ for FREE. That's the only way I would even try it again. When you take this game for what it is, it still under-delivers.

The combat is extremely sluggish, the flight system is unrepsonsive, and there isn't enough complexity in the core loop to keep it interesting.

In NMS everything is "awesome" - which makes nothing awesome.

There is life everywhere. Cargo crates everywhere. "Rad" things to see everywhere. Space stations everywhere. And if there is stuff everywhere, stuff is not going to matter. Your experience of finding stuff will bomb within 20 minutes time.

The thing is - NMS has all the modules, all the code and all the design there to create a wonderful and deep planetary exploration experience. But it is not put together in any fantastic and thoughtful fashion - rather it is put together in the most "meh" of ways.

What they promised us: A deep complex space exploration game with warring factions, moving environments and a vast multiplayer Universe.
What we got: Sub par resource gathering and "crafting" game with lego creatures, static aliens, repetitive gameplay and LIES.

The game has no multiplayer at all, so the devs lied on that. There are no warring factions, sure you can gain favour with aliens, but they won't war against each other and their frigates don't move and battle like in the trailers. When it comes to the scale, sure it is a big galaxy. but you will notice the patterns of creature lego parts and world types very quickly. And the space part is in no way realistic since the "star systems" are just lumped together clusters of usually ugly planets, all static, all with only one biome and a sickly colour pallet. And since when did space become full of coloured gasses? I know nebulae exist but most of space is black- but that's just my inner nerd, I would prefer more realistic space.

Really I don't want to go into all these faults and lies too much, because everybody has already done this so it would be pointless- I recommend the Angry Joe review to really see the nature of the game.

The biggest problem with the game is a lack of purpose. The purpose is not survival- survival is not that hard and does not get harder like in games such as Don't Starve, so merely not dying does not give the game purpose. There is no building, so that is not the purpose- don't expect to make space empires or anything. There is no faction war, and combat is pretty bad, especially space combat, so that is not the purpose. There is no multiplayer, no bumming around with friends, no griefing (which the devs said would be in the game but to multiplayer so that was a lie), basically no multiplayer. Exploring is fine, until you realize only a few things change on each planet and there is no coherent story.

So the only purpose at all left in the game is getting to the center of the galaxy, where the devs said a mind blowing ending would be. Getting here is a huge grind on planet hopping and mining, but when you do reach the center of the Universe, NOTHING HAPPENS. Yep, you just get cheesy music and a pan out of the galaxy, then getting dropped into a new galaxy. It is the equivalent of making a new save file in effect. Just google "nms ending" and watch the video.

So my final score is 2. The game really has nothing going for it and the price tag is way too high, and on top of that the devs lied. Like I say, just watch the AJS review.

Sean Murray specifically made this game sound like the best survival/exploration game made to date, it is not that. Space Engineers is 10x deeper, Elite Dangerous has way more to do, basically find any game labeled "Survival" or "Open World" and you will find much more content than in No Mans Sky, which is ironic for a game marketed as having an endless amount of content. the truth is, every planet is the same, with the same crystals, the same plants, the same buildings, the only thing that changes is the colour scheme. The alien interactions are pointless, there are three species, none give you anything interesting or tell you anything new, you learn a word occasionally, but even when you learn most of the words the conversation is mind numbing, they basically just ask you for some carbon to power up a battery or something along those lines, no lore to discover or stories to tell. Overall this game has the most tedious, boring "loop" gameplay, you mine minerals to fuel your ship, you sell minerals to buy a new ship and you craft ship/gun components out of minerals... thats it folks, you can of course go to a new star system and do that all over again if you wish, and again, and again, and again. This is not a survival game, this is not a space sim, this is more akin to Journey and other boring indie/art games that have you do nothing but walk/fly around and look at basic scenery with pixelated textures but hide it with bright colours. Yes, it may have 18 quintillion computer generated planets that may be impossible for humans to visit all. But the question you will be confronted with is would you even want to? The game and options we were shown and told by Sean Murray, are not here.

I could stomach No Man's Sky if it was an indie game that sold for maybe $20. But to charge $60 for a game that you know doesn't deliver the features that were stated feels bad.

Right now I'm letting my 9 year old play it because Minecraft in space is what he enjoys. Maybe after a year or 2 of patches and DLC this will be what we were promised.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played NMS for 33 hours. This is one of the most shallow and empty games I've ever played. Why have quintillion possible planets to "explore" when they are all basically the same and collecting resources is mind numbingly boring? For a game this basic you should have a small amount of planets to explore, not an infinite amount. The compelling part of the game was the possibility of how the game would progress, and what was at the center. Well the game doesn't progress (only in that you get bigger ships and more slots for items whose only purpose is to get you more money to get bigger ships and allow you to travel further, which actually has no point because..) THERE IS NOTHING AT THE CENTER. This game is a sham, a hoax, and anyone who gave it favorable reviews surely didn't play all the way through. There is literally nothing at the center. Just a wannabe poignant look at how large the universe is and how meaningless your trip there was. If this game's point was to explore beautiful planets, why make it so hard? Why make you grind for hours when there is no greater purpose in the game? You grind in Skyrim and Fallout to let your quests be easier and go more smoothly and learn the story. In this game you grind for the sake of grinding. There is absolutely no purpose to getting to the center, and there is no story. If you buy this game you will want your money back. Absolutely terrible. Expand

The game's base concepts are just not good enough to hold my attention or make me feel like I would rather be playing this than something else, which is a shame. The worst part of all of this is that they feel that they are still sensible in charging $59.99 for this, which is absolutely obscene.

My advice is that if you want some good fun with randomly generated stuff (including space) then go pick up Spore for a third of the price (or cheaper if you can find it on sale). Also, I have about 35-40 hours but I originally bought the game when it launched from the GOG store.

It's with a heavy heart that I write this review, because I really wanted this game to blow my expectation out of the water. Sadly, it did the exact opposite:

    Exploration:
The exploration is nice at the beginning of the game. The sense of wonder and scale of it is nice at first, but it starts dropping off really fast after your first couple of planets. I noticed duplicated things within my first 3 hours of playing, which was pretty disappointing in all honesty (I expected it to happen at some point but not that fast). The stations and outposts littered over the planet start to get dull due to the fact that they're pretty copy paste between the assets and aliens that inhabit them. Although each planet had plenty of things on it, the things you could actually do felt as if they were stretched way too thin. There aren't even any local missions you can do for credits even though there are so many stations and outposts you visit. Speaking of credits....

Trading: I've played alot of Space Games, they are an absolute favorite of mine. A key part of a space game is the trading and for No Mans Sky...it gets about as complex as looking at what color an item is. Its abysmal in my opinion, especially when they kept raving about how in-depth and intricate it would be (just like half the **** they said was going to be cool). The whole system doesn't really work for trading because of the vastness of everything. Usually if I'm trading in a space game I would try to find the best trade route for a commodity, but since there are quintillions of planets that can't really happen and its more of just a "sell whatever **** you dont really want to make room for other **** trading style. By far the most surprising (and mind boggling) thing was the absolute disregard for the regulation of credits. I made 2 MILLION CREDITS ON MY FIRST PLANET, WHAT THE ACTUAL **** This wasn't even that hard, I just found all of these relics that serve no other use except to be sold, and they were worth 15,000-55,000 credits each. Find those a couple of times and you'd be rolling around in a solid gold spaceship with spinners and underglow.

Crafting: The crafting system is pretty standard, just collect certain materials and combine them with others to make parts and combine those parts and other materials to make things and so on and so forth. Not much to go on about here
Inventory and UI: The UI tries to be clean but suffers from the "Clean lines but too much **** on my screen" dilemma that happens to many games. They try to cram everything into and it just ruins the point of the minimalist design to it. Interacting with things is also an absolutely peeving experience, since you have to click and hold for something to happen as opposed to just clicking. It's something small that over time begins to just get annoying. The inventory itself (although upgradable) feels way too small. The fact that upgrades for your Ship and Exo-suit take up inventory spaces in those things makes absolutely no sense to me, especially when you're first starting out and want to collect every single thing in sight.

Flying/Combat: Another big disappointment for me, because its so watered down and simplified that its honestly frustrating. Flying is awful, like its on-rails but the rails are rusted out. I can't even turn my head to look around at the landscape or for approaching enemies. The turns feel stiff and not respective of most physics since I can tilt my nose down and still be going forward while watching my ship "burn". The combat is.....well it doesn't really feel like combat. You know how you're supposed to fear death in survival games? Like its the end all be all? Not here, I don't fear anything in this game. Not giant cliffs when I run out of jetpack fuel, not enemy ships and most certainly not these Wheatly looking mother****ers that patrol the planet. I left my computer while in combat with one of these things for five minutes and came back to only just being notified that my shield had dropped. It's a joke, and for a Survival/Exploration game its insulting.

Performance: Check on Steam just to see how many people can't even launch the game (Michael Aoun being one of them) because the devs didn't add a compatibility to the architecture of the game. On my rig, the game runs fine one moment and then the frames drop to dog****, and go back up again. This happens without any reasons, whether there's thousands of things around me or one. The FPS itself locks itself to either 30 or 60 randomly and on occasion drops it like its hot to a nice 14. As far as programming goes, its about as well put together as Pokemon GO (Fix your **** Niantic).
Overall, the game is playable and has redeeming qualities that can make it fun for a first time and a little while after. But after the amount of hype and promises that surrounded it ended up just being a series of 5-yard line fumbles and blatant lies, I can't justify purchasing this game right now, let alone at a discount.

Let's be honest here. The game lacks everything apart from exploring and that is also very narrow. All good critique videos will lay down what is wrong with the game. It's simple Sean Murry sold out to sony! Again I was looking forward, It looked great, I have played it solidly even putting up with the woeful pc effort. The idea was groundbreaking the delivery wasn't. Ironically all their so called little game play displays is the game, and only recently, which i find even more ironic, it was not procedural generated by their own game engine, they fluffed something up that would be not hard for the public to take! All the problems are now coming out! I do love it for what it is, equally I'm highly disappointed with what it is! If you want something that has a true universe Elite Dangerous is for you. If you want something that is made from the future Peter Molineux then NMS is for you Over planned under developed released Alpha sell out to a big company! It offers nothing but a time loss as the game is a forever closed loop, there is no story, not involvement, and realistically in their right mind 4 sentient species, and 3 of those are Non playable characters, in an infinite galaxy that is some of the stuff that is there in the game to accept. In the end, It is boring, it is limited due to the size, It's got no depth the procedural generation is questionable, It's good only for picking up when you have nothing to do for an hour pass some time away where you don't have to think and then put it down. As soon as you get enough materials to fix your star ship, you can finally leave the planet you started on. Don't get me wrong, the first hour of playing this is pure awesomeness. But then it hits you like a bus with rocket thrusters, all that wonder and excitement you had for the game will be gone very soon. Now the game becomes a repetitive romp through an almost empty universe, full of terrible, derpy creatures, glitches, and constantly having to refuel your mining laser thing and life support. At the point where i had to get the materials to build a warp drive or whatever, I found myself going from planet to planet trying to find one goddamn material, that none of the planets near me had, yet it was essential to have this part on my ship. Past this point I really just gave up on the game. I haven't played it since the day it game out. Also, the amount of promises Hello Games made, that were all but abandoned, is disappointing, and if anything has ruined there career in game production. All in all, if you want to play this game, don't spend 59.99 on it, don't even spend 29.99 on it! If you really really want to experience the repetitive nature of No Man's Sky, wait and buy it when it is under 20 dollars. I know this was a long review, but just trust me, you may like the game, but I didn't. Thanks for letting me explain why this game is worse the Call of Duty Infinite Warfare, which will probably also be terrible. No Man's Sky = 2016 Destiny Expand

Rebel Galaxy, which was a FREE game for Playstation Plus User for the month of August, is better than this $60 stinky pile of Dookie. All of the hype was blown out of proportion, and HelloGames and Sean Murray lied about their product. Lesson learned. Let someone else pre-order the game and complain about it before I waste my own money.

I have never been more disappointed in a game in my life. The marketing was criminal. I would have rather set my money on fire than give it to the thieves at Hello Games. They are everything that is wrong with the gaming industry today.

It is simply the worst game I've ever played in my life.
    A false advertising and shameless.
The game does not deliver anything of what was promised, it is a futile and meaningless journey, after an hour of play is absolutely monotonous and repetitive.

    - Glitchy and buggy game.
    - Boring game
    - Repetitive
    - Stupid A.I
    - 18 quintillion planets looks the same
    - crafting and crafting the items you crafted before in order to craft something else.
    - Aliens and starships are identical
    - It worth 10$ max and 5$ on sales.
    - Not recommended even if you love space exploration.

Over hyped waste of money, there's nothing to do in the game and there's no ending, the game just resets itself when you get to the centre of the galaxy and it starts again in Galaxy +1.

Worst game I've ever played and I have been playing games for 30+ years.

There are so many features that are missing that we were explicitly told were in the game.
Performance is awful, there is no depth at all. Controls are horrible, User interface is the most awkward and badly designed one to date.
It's pretty incredible how a dev can straight up lie about their game with no repercussions.

They should have done 100 different legs, body, eyes, face, etc that way when the new planet with life you land on would have a greater chance on not looking the same. The same could be said about the planet generator as well.

The big set back is there is no REAL multiplayer and Sean Murray is very contradicting with multiplayer. He said you would be able to meet other players but there's a extremely small chance but then says its not a multiplayer game. The game info on the game case, on steam, and on PSN all say 1 player. To top it off 2 players got to the exact same spot on a world yet they could not see each other like Sean Murray said they could.

Verdict: 4/10 - Its a great game if you just want to relax and explore space in your spare time but there's lack of content and poor random generator. No multiplayer which could've added more hours of fun being able to explore with friends or a random person you come across.

P.S To you 10s not everyone that hates this game likes CoD alright? get that idea out of your minds.

This game, or should i say this "tech demo" is very very bare. In terms of content and stuff to do. If someone sold me this game at 30 dollars and told me it was early access id very much believe them. This game does not deserve any 10s. Please stop being over hyped and look at the game for what it is and not what you wanted to love.

    The basics:
Here's a run down of what you will do in this game. Mine and Explore. That is it. With the rare occasion of a dogfight here or there. The actual gameplay, is essentially you walking/flying around till you find any of the "?" locations on your HUD. While in between those destinations you can choose to look at rocks, plants, or animals. (if there even are any on the planet you're on) The first few times, it's pretty awesome honestly. But it looses its appeal, VERY fast. Soon you realize that the planet you're on looks almost identical to the planet you were on yesterday. Most people don't seem to understand how procedural generation works. This game is a good example to how it works in a simple setting. (This planet is green with blue trees and red water) (Next planet will have red trees, green water and a blue atmosphere) And that basic idea is how they get the supposed 18 quintillion planets because they consider even the slightest change as a new planet.
But i digress back to what you can "do" After finding outposts and alien artifacts and all that jazz. You can eventually upgrade your equipment. Your tool, your ship and your suit. Not with any cool tech or anything that's innovative.....its mostly just bigger inventory, with faster mining lasers and longer lasting life support.....to do what you were already doing but slightly more efficient. There is no reason to upgrade other than for the inventory slots. Nothing is saying " you can't mine this copper because your tool isnt powerful enough" you can mine everything regardless. So basically doing all the upgrades is mostly pointless.

    Graphics:
Oh boy, this one is mostly due to opinion i believe, but personally i think this game can run on last gen consoles no problem. Graphically this game is nothing to marvel at. From afar things look pretty amazing then you get about 15 ft away and notice it looks no where near that good. Mostly everything looks really bland and color saturation isn't that well done. IMO

    Sound:
The music is pretty generic, if youve seen interstellar, apollo 13, or any space based movie. You've probably heard some of the music.
The ambient noises though are very well done if a bit misleading. There are times where you hear noises preseumably from animals. Yet there is nothing around for miles.

    Issues with fandom to address:
"This game isnt for everyone its an exploration game! you CoD lovers dont get it!"
No, they get it. You're the one who doesn't get it. You're so blinded by Hype you can't see what the game actually is.

"18 Quintillion planets!? theres so much content in the game! so much to do!"
No, there isn't. Walking around and looking at stuff isn't the content people normally refer to. They refer to the actions you can do in a game. Where No mans sky has no actions. You walk around mine and upgrade. That is your sole game play experience. As for the planets, once you've seen 10 planets, you've seen most of what this game will show you. A lot of it is pallet swaps, and actually pieces of monsters/plant life switched on to different bases and called a different species.

"This game isn't for you don't vote it down because you don't like it!"
This game is flawed. Very much so. If you can't understand that you cant review games. This game has been hyped so hard people literally deflect negative reviews just to force themselves to love this game.

    Overall:
No Man's Sky, is not innovative, not entertaining, and not fun. It's sad to see a developer create a game in a genre where other games have succeeded in with little to no hype. Where this game falls flat on its face and hard.
Give it a try if you get the chance, but i would not purchase this at full price. Its worth playing and seeing for yourself but odds are, you will tired of it within 3-8 hours.

Instead of the payoff arriving when the player gets to create stuff, the prize is more efficient mining equipment, for further mining. It is a nightmarish perpetual motion machine fueled by the players' patience, which, if they are lucky, will run out sooner rather than later. The lure of taxonomising the planets fades away when you realise it's basically a museum of photographs of characters and life forms, not because gaming is inherently a medium on screen, but rather because they have decided the only purpose of them is to be mined or labelled.

And just a non-spoiler point about the 'mind-bending' ending. I will quote J.L. Austin on the word 'real':

"[A] definite sense attaches to the assertion that something is real, a real such-and-such, only in the light of a specific way in which it might be, or might have been, not real." (1962, p.70)

I've heard people say it's a "make your own fun" sort of game, a la Minecraft before Notch decided to tack on an endgame. However for there to be emergent gameplay one must first have a broad pallet of game mechanics to play with. This is exactly where No mans Sky falls down, there is very little to do and very little variety in how you do it. If you could clip along at mach 3 blasting space dinosaurs, or carve your name into the side of a mountain I can guarantee this game would not be getting bad reviews.

What is there plods along at a snails pace, walking feels like crawling, sprinting feels like walking and even the bad-ass stiletto hulled space-ripper ships amble through the atmosphere as if they were pleasure craft. There are a host of other things that one would thing should never have made it out of beta, ruins are less useful than knowledge stones. One of the atlas path goals requires that you spend hours documenting every living thing on whatever planet you happen to be on, the puzzles are kindergarten grade easy, and every single alien encounter plays out in exactly the same way. The sound design (which I have seen others laud) consists of generic muzak, overlaid with random animal cries and mechanical nonsense that has no bearing on whats going on around you.

I can forgive Hello Games, they are an indie studio with indie budgets and indie mindsets. What I'm less inclined to forgive (and we as gamers are as much to blame for this) is having them dragged out twice at E3, hyping this thing into the AAA it isn't, and me traveling round 3 different retail outlets to find a boxed copy for £40. This thing ought to have been £15 digital only, and I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this gets pushed out onto PS plus as a freebie in the next 12 months.

Where are the mountains , the plains , seas or rivers ? Where is the randomness of a living planet?
Only the color and the position of the things are different. But, serously?
How can a ridiculous animal species produce exactly the same ridiculous sound light years away?
How can one more identical baby-face dog make me feel to be alive on an alien planet?
How can give me the pleasure of exploration?

This game is the best example of broken dev promises I've ever seen. Almost nothing promised by Hello games is actually in the game. This title is just a pile of boring grind which would make gold miners of Asian MMOs cry in tears of horror and it doesn't deliver almost anything you have seen on the trailer videos.

This title is just a pile of boring grind which would make gold miners of Asian MMOs cry in tears of horror and it doesn't deliver almost anything you have seen on the trailer videos.

Do you expect to see huge well constructed species like in the trailers ?? Forget it - you will get clearly generated garbage like a frog with horse legs or simply creatures that look like 4 anatomy organs mixed together. Trailers have shown superb looking creatures which resembled some evolutionary path, but this is not what the game delivers. Instead you will get nonsensical (incredibly stupid AI) creatures that just run around frantically like they just took cocaine.

Do you expect unique planets with flora which is unique ? well you will get color` change. That is pretty much all you get plus minus few changes which are so generic that they are unnoticeable.

Do you expect multiplayer? - not there

Do you expect unique settlements? - well you get few settlements that just repeat over and over and over and look exactly the same on each planet based only by the faction.

Do you expect meaningful interaction with the ingame factions? Build relationships ??? Well - they are not meaningful in any way, but more just for leveling them up, so you can buy more things from them. Your place and role in the universe is ultimately pointless.

Do you expect to explore planets where nobody has ever been? Not in this game either - all planets are under some faction as they need some settlements ect, so you can buy slots for your inventory...

Do you expect meaningful crafting which involves real logic or thought? Nope - only mindless slot management and grind for the same resources over and over and over and over and over and over and over... You get the point.

To summarize - this game is worth 10 bucks at best and doesn't deliver almost anything Hello games promised. Companies like Hello Games should be sued until they are blue in their face for ruining the game industry and screwing over the player base.

Literally made an account as I still see people defending this game on social media. This is the biggest waste of money over hyped POS game I gave ever played. A game built on lies and broken promises. Anyone who defends this game you are the reason they are going to keep bringing out unfinished garbage in the future. -9999/10

I got mugged right off purchasing this smoke ball. Nothing to the game, extremely repetitive and no refund on it. I wouldn't be so salty if I only paid £5 for the indie game it is but charging £40 as if it's a AAA title is a joke. Doesn't live up to any of the promises. Don't buy unless it drops to £5 in a sale. Not worth any more money.

Irrespective of what was or wasn't promised in the marketing hype leading up to the release, No Man's Sky is fundamentally dishonest. It's a shallow, sterile, boring, repetitive slog in the guise of a deep, vibrant, exciting universe of limitless possibility. An adventure game without the adventure.... or the game.

Worst game this year by a country mile. Lies, cons and deceits by HG are despicable. They should be ashamed. Barebones gameplay and repetitive grinding are just a few painful examples of why this game is a complete disaster. The ending is perhaps the most insulting part which made me lose it big time. 2/10 and no more. Fix your game HG.

--Tedious resource collecting coupled with an infuriatingly tiny inventory

--Developer outright lied about aspects, or was disingenuous. For that reason alone, I wouldn't support it.
--This is NOT an AAA title, yet it came out as the price of one. I'm not even sure it's a finished title of any grade.

If this company had any decency, they'd offer to give people their money back. The fact that they won't speaks volumes. This is the game that put the idea of pre-ordering in its grave.

I've been playing game since de 80's. This is one of the worst. First, you have to repair the spaceship. Tutorial is long and boring (farm farm farm). Controls are clunky. Took 1h to get all the ingredient to finally leave the first planet.

Nice color palette and that's all.

All that beautiful promises about players running into each other in a massive world, joining factions sounds cool right ? Except that none of it is there in the game.. what is this an early Alpha ?

I didn't misunderstand the game. I knew that it was survival based. I knew that it was a slow paced game where exploration, gathering, and trading would be key. I get all that. The reason why No Man Sky is a dud for me is because Hello Games promised a gigantic universe to explore but only has about 1000 or so core assets - meaning this "huge" universe start to look the same within the first few hours.

My excitement dropped immensely when I landed on just my second planet and found the SAME flora asset that just had the name changed. The the SAME rock/Iron asset, again with just the name changed. Then the SAME minerals and crystals. The creatures looked almost identical, with variation so small I couldn't actually notice the difference (though to be fair, I saw more variation in creatures eventually.)

The first 10 planets I explored I saw repeats of the same assets over and over again, so I'm using my scanner to make this "new" discovery, and its just the same exact plant I've already seen 20 times, just with a different name.

THAT, friends, sucks. That is cause for legitimate disappointment. It doesn't matter how enormous the game world is if only 10% or so of it feels truly unique. After a while I starts to feel like basically "ah this is the green planet, that's the red planet, here's the blue planet -- where everything on it looks more or less the same.

Guess what's worse? The structures for every alien race, every outpost, every shelter that I visited in my 30 hours of gameplay use the SAME damn models. Talk about immediately killing any sense of vastness or difference or exploration.

The Sentinels on planets is also a let down. Every planet I've visited has them. Sometimes they are more aggressive, sometimes they aren't - but I never got to a planet where I truly felt like I was the FIRST to explore. Someone's always been there before me. It is also annoying has hell to have sentinels constantly interfering with your efforts to do the most basic things like harvest a mineral. And talk about repetitive. Sentinels follow the exact same script, in the exact same way, on every single planet I've been to so far.

I don't feel like I was confused about what kind of game this is. I feel like the execution on what the game aspired to be is unfortunately quite poor.

After 2-3 hours you have seen all the planet forms and creature designs. They vary a bit but the pattern is very recognizable. So the fun of exploring stops there. The "gameplay" elements are repetitively and get boring fast.

Furthermore, the inventory space is minimal, requiring constant micromanagement and throwing away things you want to keep for the journey. More generally, it seems very unpolished, with graphical quirks, misspellings and deeply unintuitive menus. The visuals can be pretty stunning at times, but I was expecting more than a pretty game with the depth of a pothole. A hipster game made by literal hipsters (look it up at the developers wearing flannel shirts, ironic tees), using a hipster non threatening color palette, a hipster UI, a hipster space ship, a hipster name, a hipster design aesthetic, a hipster logo, even the aliens are hipsters.

If you bought this game and you're not a hipster then you're just a loser. Which means I'm a loser too.

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
