It took me about 7 and a half hours to finish the story of the game, which is also a huge step up from the original's 2 and a half hour story mode. And I still can't put the game down, thanks to its plethora of side activities that are just as fun as the original game's time trials.

If there's anything I'd complain about in this game, it would only be that the ending of the story didn't really reach much of a conclusion. I was hoping for the protagonist's actions in the story to have more of an impact, but to be honest, the ending made sense and it was actually very refreshing to get a story that doesn't have an overly happy ending.

There's a lot more that I would love to say about this game, but I'm not very good at expressing myself in text, so I'll let the short description of what I liked and disliked and the score I gave speak for those masses of thoughts I have for this game.

The way I see, most games present themselves in different ways, these are what I usually grade them on, rather than a set 5 categories like Game Informer. For Catalyst, these categories are Gameplay, Aesthetics and Narrative.

Gameplay and Aesthetics are both phenomenal. Gameplay is great, as good as any parkour game, thought so of the last one and think so of this one. Combat is the weakest part of the game, still work and is more fluid without guns. However, it can feel clunky at times and the subtraction of guns should have included the addition of combos. Also, you can't counter anymore which is a huge minus. Every other aspect of Gameplay is great. The reason I included Aesthetics in this part is because the Aesthetics help the feel of the Gameplay. I've said this of the last Mirror's Edge game and I'll say it of this one, this is the best art style of any game ever. The only other major series I could think of would be Final Fantasy, but I love this art style so much. The Aesthetics give a great feeling to the Gameplay. If you're running for an extended period of time, some music should begin to play to heighten that feeling. Without the Aesthetics, the Gameplay would feel and be worse, dropping this game's rating significantly.

Next comes the Narrative, which fails to engage. It starts very well and ends very well, but the middle there's a severe lack of character development. This happens a lot in open-world games and is why they shouldn't have gone with this model, but more on that later. The narrative itself is a rag-tag group of runners living on the edge of a corporate world, trying to survive and deal revolutionaries and the evils of individualism. It's Marxism 101, we could've handled the corporations, but without all of the philosophical grandstanding, which is quite ironic because the most evil corporation of them all, EA, published this game. If you would learn about the difficulties and oppression through actual story, rather than **** side quests, it would allow for greater character development. The story was just too childish, it would've been much better in the hands of someone like George R.R. Martin, it needs to be darker.

The people who say the combat is bad seem to be the same people who don't know how to play. The combat in this game requires you to experiment with the environment to take down your enemies, it's not about you just standing there and you punching enemies until they fall down one by one. I've seen a bunch of people on Youtube do this and it's honestly really cringeworthy. Visuals are beautiful, soundtrack is amazing, some of the characters like Plastic and Icarus were great and memorable.

But the thing that really stands out is the incredible and jaw dropping parkour. It's not like in Assassin's Creed where you just push a button to climb and that's it. This game has a lot of emphasis on parkour, you actually need momentum and timing. The only flaw I can agree with is the story. It's not "horrible", it's just kind of lame and cliche.

One last thing i'd like to point out is that I highly recommend playing this game without hud on. All you need is the your stamina and health bar. Disable the useless enemy health bars and that stupid combat reticle thing. Also disable the runner vision, only use it whenever you're lost. Don't know what EA was thinking when they decided to put this much hud into a Mirror's Edge game.

There you go, an honest review. It's like an 8/10. I'm convinced the people that are bashing this game haven't even played it and just go by what other people say.

    - Is that short area here all of the map ? I hope not.
    - Genereic fetch and run quests....hmmm

So I was a little bit disappointed by that seemingly wasted potential, at first.

Then after some hours later into the game, after I unlocked 2-3 more areas and the story unfolds:
    - hey the music is nice, and this enw area has much cooler atmosphere.
    - running around is actually satisfying
    - those node riddles are awesome
    - combat looks good but is of course still simple and not the focus of the game.

after 50% 100% of the game:
    - This is such a good atmosphere
    - I really like the the little rebel against the system story. It was told well withing the frame of this game.
    - eager to complete the story
    - sad when it all ended.

Please give this game a chance the first quarter is just a 7 but then it migrates to a near 9 towards the end. There is no other game where you can explore a city with that kind of mobility. I was surprised I liked it so much in the end, again.

I played the first game and loved it. CATALYST has the same atmosphere as the first game, but offers more freedom. I loved the gameplay and the freedom, also the new skills. The story could be better, but Catalyst's gameplay stands out above the rest. I hope EA will invest in a new game. Faith still remains one of the best well-designed female characters. I love her design.

If it's a challenge you're after, try completing any of the many side missions while achieving full star. Better yet, try one of many user created time trial gauntlets, or create one yourself.

This game, is so significantly better that the original that I was lost for words. It like they elegantly streamlined everything good about the original game, and added a few cool things to an already perfect moveset! I really love everything to do with the new movement system and was surprised to see it better tuned still after the version from the beta! And the combat, while much more simplistic and generally incredibly easy, especially once you get all the upgrades, was much better by virtue of you being an mostly skip it, and have no gunplay options anymore, because Faith is a much more capable fighter now so when you do fight, you hard and quick and move on. And moving on is what I was often most excited to do. The environments were really quite interesting, and obviously beautiful, and to be able to have so many hidden goodies tucked away in the, and to have so much freedom in the traversal of said areas was sublime. I won't say the game is perfect by any means, as it still has odd bugs while loading on the fly while you were running around what parts of glass you were actually able to explore. I must say, the map is much smaller that it seemed upon first glance, and that's not necessarily a bad thing as traversing all of it on foot makes it feel significantly larger! Also, I had expected that the underground had more too it, so it was disappointing that it was so small. And furthermore, the music was just not terribly impactful. It was functional, but nowhere near as good as the first game. I get that they were going for a sort of ore procedural mix that adapted to play different loops at different times and fade in and out layers of sound, but it just didn't capture me at all like the first game's music did. I guess I'm glad the jukebox is in the Zephyr transit hub then. X3 Anyways, the story, for me, was good. Nothing astounding and so called the personal family twist upon capture of someone who upon first glance was clearly not who they appeared to me. Anyways, I'm so satisfied, cause there is so much more depth and universe building in this story, that unlike the first where I could never imagine a direct sequel to spawn from, I can easily see a sequel being made to follow this game! There are so many interesting possibilities, and I loved and am still loving digging around for more recordings and documents, and listening in on newscasts and loudspeaker announcements to try and glean more about Glass and Cascadia, and Omnistat as well. I can easily see other games moving into other nearby regions while also possibly digging further into Glass itself. In summation, I feel like Catalyst is Mirror's Edge in all ways, and a successful and poignant example of what a good reboot can do to give a franchise a large dose of life and potential it never had before. Simply put, I have Faith in Dice, and I eagerly hope that the game is the Catalyst that brings about another Mirror's Edge game. Run and flow! Expand

Parkour has never been so much fun. Well, in a video game I mean, I don't do it IRL. The gameplay is just awesome, much more intuitive and smooth than the first one, and the missions as well are much more varied and interesting. There's also a ridiculous amount of things to do in the city in addition to user created content.

I was skeptical about the open world setting, linear games are typically better, more focused, and I seriously loved the first Mirror's Edge but bottom line, this is where Mirror's edge belongs. The world they have crafted is just too perfect to lock it down to linear missions. And I always did kind of have that feeling in the first one.

It always bums me out when a video game gives you an amazing city skyline but doesn't really let you explore any of it. That is not the case with this one. You get to explore most of the highlights of this amazing city. One of which is the new "Shard" which looks like it's at least 1 mile tall if not 2 (so cool).

the graphics are great for the most part. 900p is a big drawback though. Like most 900p games it always looks fuzzy and frankly subpar. Otherwise the game is gorgeous and features an amazing art style, excellent lighting, nice reflections, and surprisingly great character models and facial animations. Sometimes there are some subpar decals/textures though (the ALLCOM logos next to many of the circuit boxes)

The story is another big surprise. It does somewhat retread some elements of the first game (it is based on the same basic plot ideas after all, it's mirror's edge) but otherwise it was much better than I expected and infinitely better than the first game. I didn't mind the story in the first game but it was at times way too cheesey. This on the other hand was much more mature and well written in addition to being less predictable but I won't go into spoilers.

Overall, this is a perfect sequel, it is everything I hoped it would be, and for that I'm giving it a perfect score.

And seriously F%^& all the idiotic haters. It's the first game all over again with these idiotic reviews and moronic gamers. People always want something unique and innovative until they actually get it. You all can burn in hell. EA took a risk making this game, and because of dicks like you people, we might not get a third one

As a fan of the original Mirror's Edge, Catalyst is just what I wanted. Not to say there aren't faults, because many of the faults from the original carry over to Catalyst. Some things are improved, such as combat and story, but are still not great.

The combat thankfully removes the option to pick up weapons, and instead forces you to use melee and your momentum to fend off others. Most of the time, this works as intended, and it feels great pulling off moves, eliminating enemies, then continuing to run without losing your momentum. At some points, this doesn't work as well though. For some odd reason, once or twice the game forces you to stay in an arena type space and eliminate enemies. This makes you stop momentum and have to clunkily fight enemies and sometimes running away for cover while you regain your health back. These parts aren't horrible, but they go against what the point of Mirror's Edge is, which is to keep your momentum and keep on running. These moments are few and far between, but they make me wonder why DICE would even put these in the game.

The story, while not amazing, improves upon the original with a few memorable characters and events. I won't spoil anything, but the plot isn't completely predictable, and while I think the plot could've been on a bit of larger scale, it was still enjoyable and didn't make the experience any worse. If you really don't care about the story, luckily you can skip all cut-scenes if you wish. Again, no spoilers, but the ending was a bit anti-climatic and made me hope for some DLC of some sort finishing up some unfinished subplots.

At first, I thought the open world was a bad idea. It has a lot of space, but much of it is fluff, and it could've lended itself to less than spectacular level design. As I played through the main story, I figured out that this wasn't really the case. DICE still implements great level design, while allowing more space to explore the city. The user created races make sure this expansive city doesn't go to waste either. Anyone can create their own race, and challenge friends or randoms to beat their time. My only real problem with the open world is that it feels empty. There are random people standing on rooftops that will wait literally forever for you to complete their task, but other than that there really aren't many other people. Most buildings you explore are also empty and don't really show what their purpose is other than to look like an extremely modern, empty Ikea. While this obviously doesn't impact gameplay, it just shows the downfalls of the open world.

While story missions are not timed, mostly everything else is: side missions, dashes, user created races, etc. Most of these you will have to replay many times to really get the hang of them and find the fastest route. This is what the original was all about, and this game stays true to that. In many ways this game feels closer to a racing game than anything else. Playing a track over and over just in an attempt to beat your friends, get higher on the leaderboard, or earn all three stars. And there is basically an infinite amount of this to do because of the open world and user created races.

The parkour mechanics are only improved from the original. Everything feels smoother(partially because of the jump from 30 to 60fps), and extra moves have been added to allow you to always keep moving, and fast. Gadgets such as the magrope fit perfectly with Mirror's Edge and allow you to better traverse the city without it being overused. The default controls are mostly the same as the original with a few extras because of the new movements and fighting skills. There is also an alternate control scheme if you want to stay more in line with modern first person shooters, although I generally would discourage this control scheme as it can make the game a bit more difficult. The newly added skill tree was never really a problem for me. Much of it is unlocked at the very start, and the few moves from the origninal game that aren't can be unlocked very quickly. You just have to remember that if you want to be breaking any world records for dashes, you need to have nearly all movement skills unlocked.

I also encountered some slight techinical problems on the PS4. Throughout the 15 hours or so I have put into the game, it has crashed once. On PS4 there are also times where there will be noticeable pop-ins that can take you out of the game a bit.The frame rate will also drop a bit at times, but it only drops enough to be noticeable, not to ruin your gameplay.

Overall, if you are a fan of the original, I definitely think Catalyst is worth buying at $60. If you thought the first had potential, but didn't love it, I would probably wait for Catalyst to drop $20 or $30. If you hated the first, you will probably still hate this one. Catalyst is more of the same with many small improvements, but as a fan of the original, that's just what I wanted.

Just amazing! Good story, characters, exploring, collecting, platforming, gameplay and design! DICE really stepped up from the last game! There is also some old school platforming goodness in this game. I really hope that they get to make a second (third) game! That would be awesome!

I think, it's exactly what the fans waited for in the last 8 years. Who likes moving in an open world and can dispense with a long epic story and a huge amount of side quests will absorb this game in every way and will have lots of fun with it.

Baffled by negative reviews. Not a masterpiece, but far from awful. Decent narrative. Decent combat. Decent mechanics. Stunning audio & visuals. Vastly improved movement. A worthy successor to the original and a promising start for a new series.

Had to register to try and counter some of the silly geese on a crusade against this. It's a sequel I never imagined would exist, so I'm ready to cut it a lot of slack.

Ain't perfect, and feels a lot more 'accessible' than the first. Not necessarily worse. I'm falling to my death a lot less! The default HUD is a little too hand holding for me, showing you the (non optimal) path through

Presentation of the story and characters is nothing special, but still a huge step up from the original's esurance ad cutscenes.

City looks to be packed with junk to find, jobs to complete and lil glowy orbs to collect. Not ordinarily a fan of collectibles, but as a means to engage the creative routes through the city, they work.

Looks like the overall experience of this game will be seeing the whole city, going everywhere and doing everything, rather than perfecting the route through the small levels of the original. So quantity over concise quality. But hey, more Mirror's Edge is all I ever wanted!

This game deserves a much higher rating. It was such a beautiful experience, free running in the city of glass. The story may not be perfect, but it's really interesting and it features some great characters like Noah or Icarus. The parkour in this game is very cool and fast paced. I like to use the parkour in different ways to my advantage. Also, the combat is good and requires skill at some points.

If you can ignore the disastrous plot and characters, occasionally clunky controls, and strange design choices, I feel that there’s a lot to like in Mirror’s Edge Catalyst. While there’s nothing else out there that can deliver the thrill of racing across this vast city and scaling massive buildings using insane parkour techniques, the sense of wonder isn’t as strong as before. Catalyst is held back by a horrendous combat system and a lackluster story that takes itself too seriously. If you can get past its flaws, you’ll find Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is still a modest platformer.

Catalyst is an example of how bigger doesn't always have to mean better. Some games don't benefit from becoming an open world adventure and should stick to what worked well, even amazing in the original. Catalyst unfortunately, traded quality for quantity.

The game's huge assortment of side missions and time trials, along with Gridnode runs, represent its most appealing offerings as you hone your route and - for the most part - focus on nothing but running. [Issue#296, p.108]
