Jun 21, 2016Some curious design decisions dampen the whole affair and the game suffers as a result.
-
Jun 7, 2016Mirror's Edge Catalyst is a good try to expand the mechanics that were introduced by its predecessor, but some technical issues like poor graphics and a flat level design prevent the game of becoming a much more enjoyable experience.
-
Playstation Official Magazine UKJul 16, 2016Mirror's Edge Catalyst offers free-running fun like no other game, but overly long fights and a truly sticking story force Faith to lose her footing along the way. [Aug 2016, p.78]
-
Playstation Official Magazine AustraliaJun 25, 2016There’s stunning art direction and addictive platforming, but none of it’s reflective of a reboot that’s risen to new heights. The old edge has been maintained, not honed. [August 2016, p68]
-
Jun 24, 2016Just as the first game Mirror's Edge Catalyst failed to fulfill the potential of the concept and the game world. All improvements are indeed nice, but not essential and the great feeling of running and style is spoiled by frustrating combat and technical flaws.
-
Jun 21, 2016A beautiful, open world and exhilarating parkour action just manage to cover up some irritating shortcomings in Mirror's Edge: Catalyst.
-
Jun 17, 2016Our feelings regarding the reboot of Mirror's Edge are mixed. The parkour gameplay is amazing and it feels really quick, but all the other stuff, like the story, the open world and the RPG elements are big let-downs.
-
Jun 10, 2016When Mirror's Edge released back in 2008, it felt like a polished technology demo. Mirror's Edge Catalyst promised to be much more than that, but it doesn't live up to all of those promises. There's still a good game here and something for everyone who fell in love with the original.
-
Jun 9, 2016Mirror's Edge Catalyst is a classic example of form over substance. Pleasant, acrobatic sprint over futuristic roofs is often slowed down and distracted by focus on combat or hidden items. Basic gameplay and running in the City of Glass is still more than worthwhile though - there's no better courier than Faith.
-
Jun 8, 2016Mirror’s Edge Catalyst represents a compromised vision. It’s one part exhilarating first-person platformer, one part bland open-world title. In a year crowded with great releases, not to mention last year’s Dying Light representing a much better open-world parkour experience, that’s a vision many people won’t want to put their money on the line for.
-
Jun 6, 2016At its best, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is a joyous flight across the rooftops of a gorgeous city, with a grace that belies the weight and impact of Faith’s movement, but DICE seem to forget this on a few occasions, dragging it down with combat that brings the free running to a halt. It’s a fantastic game at times, but just as with the utopian setting, there are problems that lie breath the surface.
-
Jul 5, 2016It has been suggested that Catalyst is a remake of Mirror’s Edge, or a reboot, but it is in reality a re-alignment of the first game with the recognizable features of a mainstream videogame, a reparation between the most original of its ideas and the most generic features of its medium.
-
Jun 6, 2016The staples of Mirror’s Edge remain refreshing and unique in the first-person genre in 2016, but Catalyst’s attempts to keep up with the open-world Joneses don’t always jive with its design strengths of movement and momentum. On top of that, muddy-looking console versions and a lame story filled with unlikable characters doom Mirror’s Edge’s return to fall short.
-
Jun 22, 2016Cliche story and awful storytelling, boring open word design, gross fight system and far from fulfill expectations… In brief; fans wanted a better Mirror’s Edge game, and DICE couldn’t it.
-
Sep 7, 2016Catalyst is an example of how bigger doesn't always have to mean better. Some games don't benefit from becoming an open world adventure and should stick to what worked well, even amazing in the original. Catalyst unfortunately, traded quality for quantity.
-
Jun 20, 2016Catalyst isn’t as good as it should be. It’s maddening, because there’s so much potential here for it to be a good game, but so many odd design decisions result in an experience that’s actually less than the sum of its parts.
-
Jun 10, 2016While the fragmented story never gets a hold of the player, only the strong parkour element and large amounts of user-generated content keep this follow up from being an utter disappointment.
-
Jun 6, 2016Unfortunately, a sterile open world and excessive backtracking drain Catalyst of the fun found in the original.
-
Dec 1, 2016While there’s nothing else out there that can deliver the thrill of racing across this vast city and scaling massive buildings using insane parkour techniques, the sense of wonder isn’t as strong as before. Catalyst is held back by a horrendous combat system and a lackluster story that takes itself too seriously. If you can get past its flaws, you’ll find Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is still a modest platformer.
-
Edge MagazineAug 26, 2016The game's huge assortment of side missions and time trials, along with Gridnode runs, represent its most appealing offerings as you hone your route and - for the most part - focus on nothing but running. [Issue#296, p.108]
-
LEVEL (Czech Republic)Jul 12, 2016When you're running, the game works great. Slow game moments push the quality down. Although it is still fun, not all improvements are appraised and the entertainment is not what was expected from the sequel. [Issue#265]
-
Jun 25, 2016If thinking about freerunning puts a smile on your face, this is the game for you. If you are looking for a good story or a diverse world however, Catalyst is not for you. Mirror's Edge deserves more love than this.
-
Jun 23, 2016And at its best, Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst is a fun and enjoyable parkour playground that delivers a solid adrenaline rush. We’ve seen parkour take center stage in open-world games before, most notably in last year’s Dying Light, but it’s never felt more fluid and natural than it does in Catalyst. The story could have been stronger and more original, and at times, the environments can look a little bit sterile and boring.
-
Jun 11, 2016At its best, Catalyst is like a giant schoolyard playground, in which players can freely explore and make their own adventures.
-
Jun 8, 2016For a game that only exists because a die-hard group of fans demanded it, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst should have been better. Unfortunately, it’s a mediocre follow-up at best.
-
Jun 6, 2016When you’re flat-out sprinting, Catalyst feels wonderful. When standing still, in the Grid Nodes, it’s great too. It’s only in that mid-region, either gaining or losing momentum, that you end up clumsy and infuriated.
-
Jun 6, 2016It has a weak supporting cast, a forgettable story, and it simply doesn’t know how to engage its players on a narrative level. It’s a real pity, especially since this is a refreshing game that has such a uniquely designed world that you won’t soon forget, and it’s proof that DICE has the potential to create something truly special here.
-
Jun 6, 2016A better game than the original, but it still suffers from many of the same problems – with desperately uninteresting storytelling and combat.
-
Jun 6, 2016Catalyst does some interesting stuff but doesn’t add enough to the mix. It’s a game I enjoyed but one that also left me feeling partly frustrated and sad. While it has good ideas and mechanics, they peak early and, in such a sparse and minimalist space, struggle to carry the whole game.
-
Jun 10, 2016Mirror’s Edge Catalyst was an answer to intense fan demand for a new game, and that seems to be all it is. Catalyst has nothing to say and less than nothing to add to its genre. Unimaginative and repetitive, with a story that goes absolutely nowhere, Catalyst serves only as a way to waste some time if there’s nothing better to play...It’s not offensive, and it’s not an actively bad time, but it’s so very bland and uneventful. I can’t really speak for the developers, but Catalyst certainly gives the impression that they’d rather be working on literally anything else.

Jun 15, 2016By celebrating freedom, the game enables the player to marvel at the richness of its action. When that freedom is restricted, everything that goes with it—movement, agency, nuance—are muted to the point of being dull and dreary, a far cry from the saturated playground we’ve come to expect.
-
Jun 8, 2016While Mirror’s Edge Catalyst opens up the city rather than confining you to discrete levels, its design woes feel precisely like the original. The odds of me clearing a mission on the first try were approximately zero. Not because my reflexes weren’t up to snuff—I swear it!—but simply because the missions are so tightly timed, the positioning so precise, that there really isn’t any time to figure out what the plan’s going to be: you simply have to do. And while that may (I can only assume) genuinely recreate the sorts of fast decisions you’d have to make if you were really trying to outrun the cops on foot, it doesn’t make for a game experience that feels fair.
