They're the ones who know their stuff! ;-) Anyone who fell in love with the original will be THRILLED by this modern take on the game. Not only is it still super fun to play but now it's also a beautiful modern game packed with cool surprises. I must say I was very pleased by the fact that they've used the original voices. How cool is that? The gameplay is very good, the modernized cartoony/goth-ish graphics are wonderful and the music is perfect. You can tell that they put a lot of efforts to modernize the game and it was sooo worth it.
If you want to split hairs you could say that some (and only a few) of the secondary character designs could have been a little better, a little "cuter", but it really doesn't matter in the end because it truly is a great game overall. I'm giving it a 10 since I had so much fun revisiting it. Thanks for resurrecting sir Fortesque once again!

Should have done this a long time ago, but oh well. A good way to end off the year.

MediEvil. What a special game, and a curious decade for it to be around. A decade in which gaming has taken a sharp turn into "cinematic" approaches for better or worse, often times forgetting that games are also supposed to be fun, weird, and interesting. A decade when the best and the worst of modern gaming has graced our consoles and PCs. A decade or many, MANY reboots, remakes, and re-releases. I'll be fair, MediEvil for the PS4 is pretty much a ground up remake, but it's retained many of the charms its original counterpart had... more or less.

Gameplay is loosened up and fined tuned to be a bit more frantic, giving enemies with familliar patterns new tricks along with the old, and Dan himself a better combat personality that more suites his character (such as swinging a sword wildly like he has no idea what he's doing if you continuously hammer the attack button). Platforming is made MUCH easier so insta-death pitfalls aren't so frequent, and weapons themselves have been tweaked to have more pronounced strengths and weaknesses. A welcome change is the inclusion of weapon switching the Medievil 2 introduced, adding alot more playtime and decreasing menu time, and fixing a certain irritation that the original PS1 games had for a very specific weapons. The camera is alright. A bit better from the original.

Visuals are... jaw dropping (lol). While it lost a little bit of its angular, Tim Burton-esque flair that the first game touted with pride, locations in the remake are absolutely gorgeous and give the game its own distinct dark fantasy vibe. Forests are lush, towns are hauntingly amiss and derelict, graveyards stink with necromancy and rot... the whole game just looks exactly like it absolutely should. Dan himself looks delightfully goofy, Zarok looks and behaves menacing, and the Gargoyles are out and out perfect in their new designs with their bright eyes and sarcastic smirks.

Audio is perfect. The original composers return to deliver the game's score with the best way possible, while also re-introducing some previous songs for specific situations for a spice of variety. Actions sound like they have punch and weight to them. Voice acting is lifted directly from the original game and given an HD upgrade (with some surprise exceptions). Also, the narrator is a joy, and delightfully sarcastic in all the right places.

It has a little bit of endgame content, which can be hit or miss depending on the player, but the last secret the game has after fully completing a certain side-quest is one hell of a treat for longtime fans.

The downside is that, aside from the new side-quest and it's reward, and a few new tricks enemies have and certain upgrades to the game overall, there aren't many other changes. No previously deleted levels remade to be played for the curious as side-stages or DLC. No new enemies or bosses to fight. No secrets that aren't already available in the original game. You're more or less getting the Spyro treatment here, except it's just one game rather than three. Also, the camera, while improved, has its issues...

All in all, a very fun remake, and one i'm glad I picked up when I did. I'm proud to have this game in my collection, and hope to play it for years to come just like I have the previous games. Here's hoping for a MediEvil 2 remake, or perhaps... MediEvil 3?

A decent enough game that's ruined a bit too much by dodgy controls, terrible ranged weapon targeting and poor platforming. Had all this stuff been tight then the difficulty of starting a level with the little health you finished the last one could have been forgiven, but it just makes a game you dont really want to play, take longer.

The game just feels OLD still, like a visually upgraded PS1 game, with no issues fixed. I feel like they could’ve done a lot more to modernize this game. LIKE PUTTING IN MORE CHECKPOINTS!! Sometimes you’ll need a shield, such as this one level where you must search these underground corridors for items, and you’ll find nothing. It can also be difficult, and not a fair kind of difficult. The game can be awesome at times, the characters are really unique, the design of the world is incredible, but still. Sometimes the visuals are razor sharp and quick, but other times, the textures and frame rate are abysmal. For $30 I’d say it’s a good pickup for collectors, but if you don’t have any nostalgia for this series, I’d say skip it. Or at least prepare yourself for some frustration instead. Get Crash Team Racing instead, it’s a much better remake than this. Expand

MediEvil took me around 13 hours to complete and if youre not used to this old school style of gameplay, is a tough 13 hours to get through…
Here youll be playing as Sir Daniel Fortesque as he sets out to stop the evil zarok raising the dead and tainting the souls. This is a hack and slash action adventure game where each level youll be slaying enemies, discovering secrets, and taking down bosses on your journey to take down zarok and prove yourself in the hall of heroes… each level has a percentage of souls needed to fill a chalice, this gives you the urge to ctually want to engage in combat despite how frustrating it proves to be… as collecting this chalice and then making it to the end of the level rewards you with the possibility of a new weapon, each increasingly becoming more powerful and useful… its this exploration and mystery that keep medieval from becoming too much.. every level here feels fresh and verried from start to finish.. no two levels feels the same, many will even surprise you and all this is necessary because of the old school nature of medievil, beause though the graphics have been brought up to date, the gameplay has not… every level plays by perma death rules, meaning there are no save or checkpoints.. if you die in a level no matter how far you get, you have to start the level from the very beginning with what you enter this level with.. which can prove challenging as you aren’t replenished health at the beginning of these levels.. though there is a way to cheese this by returning to dans crypt over and over before a new level.. I feel as though the player shouldn’t have to do this though.. filling my lives before a level should just be standard… to add to the difficulty, though the platforming feels a bit more modern.. it still has that old school cheap I have no control feel, leading to many cheap deths and game overs as falling doesn’t just take say 50 to 100 damage, it takes an entire life from you… which of course leads to many frustrating moments and a few frustrating levels where the platforming is just awful and nothing is below to catch you… on top of all of this, there is little to no indication of you taking damage, no sense of enemy range… taking the hack and slash genre a little too literall.. youll find yourself button mashing your way through levels if you don’t care to stick to range attacks..needless to say there will be a handful of levels youll be replaying.. when you can get past all of this frustration though, medievil proves to be a great and satisfying adventure, one that encourages exploration, combat and challenge, Altering the mechanics and systems to todays standards could make this an even more enjoyable experience, but sometimes we all need a little old school frustration
    I give MediEvil
    an 8/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. MediEvil is flawed but fun remake of 1998 classic, MediEvil. Compared to other remakes on PS4 such as Ratchet & Clank (which also a bit of re-imagining), MediEvil sticks very true to its source material, which is major positive. What is not a positive is some dated mechanics it keeps intact, such going back to previous levels just to re-fill health, which is not good game design, it wasn't in the 1990s, and its worse in 2010s. Mechanics such as this offer no challenge, just waste your time. The game also looks really good a lot of times in the graphics, art-style and resolution departments, sometimes rivaling other major "cartoony" gaming IPs, although the resolution on some objects its lower than things around it (for example a single character on screen appears to be lower resolution than another character on screen and/or the background). I also appreciate the devs attempting to target 60fps... unfortunately, the game often suffers some of worst framerate drops I've seen in a game this gen.

Overall the game is held up by fun gameplay, interesting level design, great progression system, charming world and characters, neat music, and overall 1990s game design that is sorely missed in 1910s, even if the remake stumbles in more areas than it should.

One other thing this game has going for it, is the original game from which the remake is based off is present in the game as an award for completing a side-quest (this is new to the remake). Very few remakes although you to play the original, so props off to the developers who really cared about this project.

A very true to the original remake that doesn't let the game shine like it could have been if it implemented new mechanics and gameplay beyond collectibles that make you do a second run on the game to unlock the original version emulated in game, a niche game for the fans of the original and its game style fanatics that likely doesn't please everyone.

It's a blast from the past, that has seen absolutely no updates to our CURRENT age in gaming, other than the graphics, and which goes entirely on nostalgia from the millennials who played it in the stone age of gaming.

Y a ello vamos.

Nothing better than playing a scary, spooky game just a few days before Halloween, especially if it's from a series that has a special place in our hearts, such as MediEvil. After many years buried, behold, the hero without chin returns from the dead once again.

MediEvil is a remake of a PS1 game of the same name that was originally released in 1998. But unlike the PS1 version, this remake is developed by Other Ocean Emeryville and not by SCE Cambridge Studio, which later also developed MediEvil 2 and MediEvil: Resurrection. Those who played the original certainly know the plot of the game, but for those who haven't had the opportunity to play the PS1 version, here is a short summary of this adventure's motto.

The Kingdom of Gallowmere was threatened by Zarok's armada plus with Zombies. Sir Daniel Fortesque led Gallowmere's troops, but unfortunately he didn't go far, he died soon with the first arrow thrown into battle. After 100 years of no news, Zarok reappears and casts a spell on Gallowmere, buried in an eternal night. The spell also wakes up the undead and removes the souls of the living. By mere accident, Zarok eventually resurrects Sir Daniel Fortesque thus giving him a second chance to be the hero of the story.

I must say that although I have never played the original or its sequel, MediEvil 2, I played MediEvil: Resurrection for PSP and was pleased with the announcement of this remake. There is nothing new about the original here apart from the graphical update and some gameplay changes, such as minor spawns for enemies or the location of the golden chalices.

Slicing, crushing, impaling, electrocuting, burning and even turning our enemies into chickens are things we will do with this fluid gameplay. But not only, we also have to dodge attacks, as enemies are aggressive and use the shield to protect us from attacks. However, shields have a resistance limit, so some attention is required. There are three types of shields, all with different qualities: bronze, silver and gold. We always have 300 life, and if we reach 0 HP we will consume a health potion to get away with it. If we don't have a life potion, well, it's certain death.

I caught a bug or glitch that upset me a lot. It seems that Dan doesn't interact well when we want to read a book in some places of certain levels, getting a little stuck, as if there were a small invisible wall preventing the action. Fortunately we can get rid of this if we move our doll. Nothing a little update won't solve.

Swords, hammers and bows are part of our arsenal. Most weapons can only be unlocked if we have a golden cup to deliver to the Hall of Heroes, but other rewards like gold coins are also part of the fan. To get a gold chalice, we have to fill it with the souls of our enemies until we reach 100%, take the gold chalice and talk to a statue of the heroes. Along the way we also have little puzzles to complete if we want to reach the end of the level. Over time, we can also find lost souls and make their challenges.

Graphically MediEvil is very nice. It is very gratifying to see the differences of this remake with the 1998 version. Having a PS4 Pro, the game offers 60 stable FPS. I'm not a big fan of fixed cameras (in some places) as it kept me from seeing what was in front of me. And even when it becomes mobile, in a few places it can become annoying. Obviously, bosses are things that Sir Daniel Fortesque will not miss in this MediEvil. Attack weaknesses, dodge blows and shield yourself as in the classic game. But don't worry that bosses in general aren't that hard to beat, even when we initially have a weak arsenal. But that's not why it's fun anymore.

What about the soundtrack itself? Excellent and harmonious. The orchestra was very well tuned and it is these words that define the sounds of MediEvil. Regarding the voices, both English and Portuguese voices are generally of quality. In short, this MediEvil remake may be more frustrating than difficult, but it's still fun. Sir Daniel Fortesque returned in a big way.

Yo crecí jugándolo y me encantaba,

No paso.

I think this is a good game. Not a nine or ten, but not below a seven either. I personally gave it an eight because it has been a most refreshing experience. I enjoy the Halloween aesthetic, its a great game to play for the holiday. The graphics aren't perfect, but they do the job well. I think the voice acting is great and fits the overall tone of the game.

Progression is fun, I loved getting new and stronger items as I made my way through the game. There are secrets tucked throughout levels, some of which require backtracking; this is a plus for me, though it may not be for you.

I enjoyed the combat, taking a hit with Dan's shield then following up with a few swipes from whatever weapon I have equipped. It never got boring or overstayed its welcome, mainly because the game isn't that long to begin with. If you wanted to rush through the thing in an evening, you probably could depending on your skill. Some people may not like short games, but I enjoy being able to take in an entire experience in only a few sittings. This may be a plus or minus depending on your personal preference.

I like the level select aspect of the game. It keeps progression from being too linear as multiple stages are added to the map at certain points. Ultimately I thought it was a great platformer that fits in well with the likes of Spyro and Crash (though it offers a lot less). It does not control as well as other platforms, but the gameplay is serviceable. The lack of a lock-on system can make close quarters combat seem a bit flimsy, but I enjoyed running around groups of enemies as I charged my weapon in order to slice down larger hordes all at once. I never once got frustrated over the gameplay, but I know many have complained about it so you may just have to decide for yourself.

However, not all is well in Gallowmere - I do have my gripes.

As many other reviewers have stated, the camera is not great. It doesn't effect the gameplay too greatly, but it can be frustrating. The camera can be clunky when the player is in control. When the player is not in control, the perspective can switch immediately based on where Sir Dan is standing - this can be jarring at times.

Another issue I have is that the games frame rate dips when there's a lot of action on the screen. It can get pretty dicey at times, but I never lost a life for it. Still, I know framerate drops are pet peeves for many and thus are worth mentioning. I honestly didn't expect a game so small to have frame dips, but hey - they're there.

Folks have complained about loading times... I honestly don't know why. My longest load time was well under a minute and I played the whole thing on a base PS4. I suspect impatience is the culprit.

The positives in this game definitely outweigh the negatives in my opinion. The combination of frame dips and poor camera takes away two points. Medievil is a good time, in my humble opinion, and is certainly worth the $30 asking price.

Everything just fits together beautifully in this game and it is not sullied with any microtransactions of any kind it is good old fashioned fun presented in a not unfamiliar Disney-like way, but the old Disney, not the new one. Dialog is entertaining with many funny moments and gameplay that can be both fun and challenging with a hidden element of strategy that may not always be immediately obvious.

The biggest factor is price though its only 30 dollars. this is how to handle smaller remakes right. compared to links awakening this is the better deal and at half the price.

I decided to up the score to 8 after I finished it and saw it all, which gave me a nice bit of nostalgia and not because of the game itself.

So this is essentially a Medievil remake, the first game only, with better graphics but also worse camera control and controls: the movement feels sloppy and often enough I get stuck into corners, while the camera is slow and often locked in
I decided to up the score to 8 after I finished it and saw it all, which gave me a nice bit of nostalgia and not because of the game itself.

So this is essentially a Medievil remake, the first game only, with better graphics but also worse camera control and controls: the movement feels sloppy and often enough I get stuck into corners, while the camera is slow and often locked in position.

I mean how do you worsen the controls and the camera controls from a game that wasn't meant to be used with a dual shock? Remember when this game came out dual shock wasn't mainstream yet and most games were made with the regular ps1 controller in mind, the one without dual shock, and the control scheme was meant for that controller in mind: how did they manage to make it even more sluggish is beyond me.

With that out of the way, the game itself is almost a perfect remake of the original game - heck the dialogues are the same too, at least in my language - and it's essentially Medievil with better graphics, and MAYBE a little harder too.
If anything I wished for both games as Medievil 1 is not exactly a long game and it took me about 2 days to complete it at a slow pace, so even if the game is solid it's relatively short for today's standards which is why they added additional content with the lost souls, forcing you to backtrack and gather souls in order to lay them to rest...and let me just say this wasn't fun, at all.

However if you do it and manage to finish this additional content that won't last more than couple of hours, you probably get the best reward you could ask from this remake...THE ORIGINAL MEDIEVIL GAME!

I think that every remake should have the original game by default included and this game made me smile when I saw the original being played: suddenly all of my nuisances were gone and all I could think was "damn, I forgot how ugly this game was", which made me appreciate the remake even more.

Overall, it's a fine remake, even if a bit short on the longterm appeal but thanks to the cheap price of 30 bucks it's very accessible to anyone, and overall it's a very good remake.

Just don't expect anything "too" new from the remake.

Loved it like i did the original back in the day and the little extras from the lost souls made it even better for me. As long as you take into account the gameplay is from a ps1 game and dont excpect gameplay from the current era you should enjoy this.

Love it, and honestly dispute criticism for the controls I’m glad they didn’t stray too far from the original.

Me encanta.

More than 20 years after its released on PlayStation 1, Medievil is back from the dead on PS4. Unfortunately, it looks much more like a remastered version than a full fledged remake. It shines with colorful graphics and spooky atmosphere, but its gameplay remains too rigid, and its mechanics haven't aged well. A title reserved for fans of the license or lovers of Halloween and «The Nightmare Before Christmas».

It's a short, but very intense adventure, with brief cinematics, compact maps without padding or copy/pasted elements. It brings a lot of variety into the world teeming with bland "sandboxes".

If you disregard the nostalgia factor, the game is anything but extraordinary. It won’t win over new, younger players... but on the other hand they are not the target audience. [13/2019, p.78]
