This is a really similar experience to the PSX game. Which is cool in some ways, but lackluster overall for a remake. After so many years, I think we should expect some issues to be fixed, such as the camera ones. Enjoyed it because it's Medievil, but it doesn't offer a lot more than the original version.

As other reviewers stated, nothing much has changed in quality of life from the original, framerate can be at points unbearable. 60 fps should have been the norm for this game.

Thanks to this pandemic i took the chance to play well this classic for the first time on the playstation. Found no faults, graphics great - same for the game play...The things that disappointed me is the motion blur (no patch for this never came) as i would only spend no more than 45min / an hour max playing it and no checkpoint save which is very very frustrating especially in certain levels.

Buen Remake. Remake como he dicho bien. Bueno.

I really, REALLY want to like this game. It’s got variety and charm busting out of it’s ears, but I just can’t ignore the issues it has. The game just feels OLD still, like a visually upgraded PS1 game, with no issues fixed. I feel like they could’ve done a lot more to modernize this game. LIKE PUTTING IN MORE CHECKPOINTS!! Sometimes you’ll need a shield, such as this one level where you must search these underground corridors for items, and you’ll find nothing. It can also be difficult, and not a fair kind of difficult. The game can be awesome at times, the characters are really unique, the design of the world is incredible, but still. Sometimes the visuals are razor sharp and quick, but other times, the textures and frame rate are abysmal. For $30 I’d say it’s a good pickup for collectors, but if you don’t have any nostalgia for this series, I’d say skip it. Or at least prepare yourself for some frustration instead. Get Crash Team Racing instead, it’s a much better remake than this. Expand

A decent enough game that's ruined a bit too much by dodgy controls, terrible ranged weapon targeting and poor platforming. Had all this stuff been tight then the difficulty of starting a level with the little health you finished the last one could have been forgiven, but it just makes a game you dont really want to play, take longer.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. MediEvil is flawed but fun remake of 1998 classic, MediEvil. Compared to other remakes on PS4 such as Ratchet & Clank (which also a bit of re-imagining), MediEvil sticks very true to its source material, which is major positive. What is not a positive is some dated mechanics it keeps intact, such going back to previous levels just to re-fill health, which is not good game design, it wasn't in the 1990s, and its worse in 2010s. Mechanics such as this offer no challenge, just waste your time. The game also looks really good a lot of times in the graphics, art-style and resolution departments, sometimes rivaling other major "cartoony" gaming IPs, although the resolution on some objects its lower than things around it (for example a single character on screen appears to be lower resolution than another character on screen and/or the background). I also appreciate the devs attempting to target 60fps... unfortunately, the game often suffers some of worst framerate drops I've seen in a game this gen.

Overall the game is held up by fun gameplay, interesting level design, great progression system, charming world and characters, neat music, and overall 1990s game design that is sorely missed in 1910s, even if the remake stumbles in more areas than it should.

One other thing this game has going for it, is the original game from which the remake is based off is present in the game as an award for completing a side-quest (this is new to the remake). Very few remakes although you to play the original, so props off to the developers who really cared about this project.

There is a wide range of different kinds of levels and they're all relatively short and not too hard. A few of them were a little annoying and made me wish they had some kind of check point though. That's because those levels were a little bit more involved. They have the player backtrack or look for items in different areas to progress. If you die, you'd have to start all over again. Some levels could have used a little more guidance on what the objective was to complete them too.

Controls are janky. You'll be taking hits from enemies when you think you shouldn't. I wasn't sure if certain weapons were weaker or stronger than others. I figured if it was a new weapon then it must be better than what I had currently, but sometimes enemies would still take a bunch of hits. Maybe there should have been some kind of description of strength level in the inventory? Also the targeting when using long range weapons is bad because there is NO targeting so you can't just run and gun while you run away. You have to be facing your target.

The camera gets horrendous at times. Sometimes it feels too zoomed in or out. So you might take some unnecessary hits from an enemy you can't see off screen.

Overall, it's an okay game but it has some problems that should have been fixed for the PS4 remake.

Very fun game to play but there were a few glitches they could’ve done with sorting out. Can understand why people who played the PS1 version gave it 9/10 out of 10. I didn’t get the chance to play the game much on PS1, so the remaster was my first time playing it properly. Overall, solid 7/10 in my opinion.

The OST is as good as the original, you will instantaneously love it if you like Danny Elfman's work .
The clear drawbacks on this title are his clunky PS1 controls and his horrible camera system, that will cost you more life bottles and game overs than the enemies. I can more or less understand that they have not included a "Z targeting" system to be true to the original and have the funny "smash square while running " combats but why on earth keep the fix camera that make the slippery platforms almost a souls-like?
Nevertheless it is a very enjoyable game and a funny platinum to get.

More than 20 years after its released on PlayStation 1, Medievil is back from the dead on PS4. Unfortunately, it looks much more like a remastered version than a full fledged remake. It shines with colorful graphics and spooky atmosphere, but its gameplay remains too rigid, and its mechanics haven't aged well.
