With some tweaks and fixes to the old game, MediEvil could have been a wonderful reunion with an old friend. Instead we get a lesson in why the good old days might not have been so good after all.

With the remake of 1998's MediEvil, Other Ocean has done great work bringing the PlayStation title in 2019. Visually, this game is a winner. The problem is the decision to keep the gameplay largely the same. MediEvil's combat is muddy and its level design lacks any sense of exploration. This needed to be a more extensive remake. As it stands, it's only for those with heavy nostalgia for the property.

Unless you're a hardcore lover of the original MediEvil, I can find little reason to recommend this remake when there are numerous superior platformers available on PS4. Heck, even Knack manages to produce a more compelling experience than this, surpassing the brittle bones of Sir Daniel Fortesque in almost every department. As someone who was equally enthralled and terrified by the original duo of games, this is an unfortunate disappointment.

The poor controls and lack of a checkpoint system have resulted in a game that is often more frustrating and fun.

This remake of MediEvil stumbles in the gameplay department, failing to bring life into its resurrected protagonist’s rusty old bones.

It may look better than the original MediEvil, but the improvements stop there. This could have been the beginning of a new breath of life for a cult favourite, but instead it’s probably the final nail in the series’ coffin.

A remake that is loyal to a fault when it comes to honouring the original, with gameplay and design mechanics that were barely acceptable 21 years ago, let alone now.

Daniel Fortesque's tale is retold with style, but the fundamentals frustrate.

MediEvil's PS4 release is a remarkably faithful recreation of the 1998 classic, and that's a problem. While the remaster is a near-perfect recreation, it recreates something archaic that, even at the time, was rather clunky....Unfortunately, MediEvil needed a full overhaul or, better yet, a brand new game. An authentic recreation of an old and messy game isn't what the series should settle for.

Surprised by the contrast in critic/ user reviews, it stays faithful to the source material and even adds to it. I'm simply loving this remaster thus far and fingers crossed for a new Medievil game in the future. Full Review »
