Oct 23, 2019The studio in charge of reviving MediEvil, Other Ocean Interactive, did nothing more than the bare minimum. The graphics are beautiful and the work done on the lighting is wonderful, but we are quickly faced with a gameplay from another time. The hero's movements is sometimes erratic and the camera can be very annoying. Still, Sir Daniel Fortesque, champion of King Peregrin, lord of the kingdom of Gallowmere is one of the most lovable (anti)hero of the first generation PlayStation. Against all odds, the gargoyles jokes, the overall creativity and the brilliant music allow us to have a good time.

Oct 23, 2019This remake is something we’ve enjoyed mostly out of nostalgia, but it lacks ambition and, let’s be honest, it hasn’t aged very well. Add some bugs and you’ll have an enjoyable but also disappointing return.
-
Oct 28, 2019MediEvil is a straight forward hack n’ slash game, originally made for the PS1. It’s presentation and sense of humor set it apart from its contemporaries, and improved camera controls have modernized it. The graphics are now rendered in 4K, and the music is orchestral. If you’re a fan of PS1 classics like Crash Bandicoot, or Spyro, but would like a heavier emphasis on action, then MediEvil is just what you’re looking for, especially if you want an old school challenge with some new school tweaks. If you’re not into retro gaming, however, MediEvil won’t be the game to convert you.
-
Jan 29, 2020More than 20 years after its released on PlayStation 1, Medievil is back from the dead on PS4. Unfortunately, it looks much more like a remastered version than a full fledged remake. It shines with colorful graphics and spooky atmosphere, but its gameplay remains too rigid, and its mechanics haven't aged well. A title reserved for fans of the license or lovers of Halloween and «The Nightmare Before Christmas».
-
Nov 25, 2019This is a definition of an uncompromising retro mindset. Cute visuals and burtonesque atmosphere set this game apart, but the gameplay is basically unchanged from its roots in the 90s - including a confused camera and a pretty bland combat system.
-
Playstation Official Magazine UKNov 18, 2019A solid remake of a cult game from a bygone era, MediEvil’s flaws lay in its past. The eight hours you’ll spend in Sir Dan’s metal boots will, however, have you smiling until the credits roll. [Issue#169, p.82]
-
Oct 31, 2019MediEvil is about as faithful as a remake can be. While some of its systems may feel archaic by today's standards, for fans of the original, it's still well worth making a return trip to Gallowmere, if only to see how beautiful it all looks now.
-
Oct 30, 2019The remake of MediEvil shows that old franchises can easily be modernized without losing their nostalgic value. The improved graphics and more accurate controls give the game a major upgrade. However, the full potential is not achieved due to a slower game pace and irritating camera movements.
-
Oct 25, 2019MediEvil is a lazily made remake that preserves many of its original flaws, while only doing enough to bring the game up to speed in the current generation of consoles.
-
Oct 23, 2019It shows its age in some spots but for the most part it’s enjoyable. People with fond memories of it would probably enjoy this update over the original if for no other reason than the visual facelift. Its style has as much to do with its legacy as the gameplay but this is one of the more memorable titles to grace the original PlayStation. In spite of the areas where this title has not aged well, MediEvil is still fun and darkly charming adventure, and like Sir Daniel this HD remake still shows there’s life left in this corpse.
-
Oct 23, 2019MediEvil successfully recreates the feel and the atmosphere of the original game, leaving intact all the problems it had in terms of gameplay, hitboxes and camera.
-
Oct 23, 2019After over 20 years Sir Daniel Fortesque rise again from his grave to remember us how hard an hero's after-life could be.
-
Oct 23, 2019An accomplished, excellent remake hampered only by some dated game design, MediEvil is a marvellously macabre medley of mayhem and mirth.
-
Oct 23, 2019MediEvil is a loveable, charming romp through a classic action game that unfortunately suffers because of overly stiff controls and combat that often feels imprecise and impractical.
-
Oct 23, 2019MediEvil is, for better and worse, an original PlayStation game with a new coat of paint. It’s a fun romp through imaginative levels with classical gameplay styles, and charmed my pants off with its humor while I struggled with the platforming and fixed camera angles.
-
Oct 23, 2019MediEvil shows its age, but remains a fun hack-and-slash romp that hilariously pokes fun at every conceivable Halloween and fantasy trope. The game’s still very much worth your time, even if it has become a little rough around its edges.
-
Oct 23, 2019MediEvil does a good job of addressing some of the problems found in the original while sticking close to the source material. The updated visuals and audio are great, and it’s more pleasant to play thanks to the improved interface. Even though some aspects can feel dated or way too straightforward, journeying through this dark and spooky world is still satisfying. Whether you're a fan of the original or enjoy other action-adventure games of the era, MediEvil is a solid choice.
-
Oct 23, 2019MediEvil resurrects one of our all-time favourite PlayStation mascots for a new generation. This remake does exactly what it promises, revamping dated visuals while staying faithful to the 1998 original, even if that means digging up certain design choices that have remained buried with Sir Dan all these years.
-
Oct 23, 2019Medievil Remake brings back to life a classic title, giving it new life. It’s the perfect opportunity to play a twenty-year-old title or to discover it, if you never hadt he pleasure of spending some time with Sir Daniel Fortesque. Unfortunately some technical problems prevent the game from having a better score.
-
Oct 24, 2019The MediEvil remake stays true to the original and was modernised quite well despite some minor deficits. In terms of gameplay it is a tad too old-fashioned.
-
Oct 23, 2019While it is true to bring us back the original experience with a more modern control, Other Ocean should have modernized many other elements of MediEvil in this remake to camouflage that Daniel Fortesque's adventure has not aged well.
-
Nov 6, 2019It’s a hard game to recommend, due to being just too darn faithful to the original for its own good; if you’re a diehard fan of the original game and can contend with the issues outlined above, then by all means give Medievil a shot, but with a wealth of excellent platforming and adventure titles available on the PS4, it’s hard to see a reason to play this over one of its contemporaries aside from the nostalgia factor.
-
Nov 19, 2019This ends up feeling like a project half-baked. The polish to the visuals and presentation are sublime, while the game play remains untouched and frustrating more often than not. I would have loved to see this game make a true comeback. Fortesque is such a lovable character and his world is infinitely interesting and fun to play around in. However, the sloppy combat, punishing game play, and lack of modernization make this a chore to play more often than not. I want to bring back the glory days of PSOne era characters, but not like this. They deserve better.
-
Nov 1, 2019Purely for fans and nothing more.
-
Oct 25, 2019MediEvil still deserves to be heralded as a classic for its time and place in gaming, and I love how it looks in revitalized form on PlayStation 4. However, its gameplay is a relic of yesteryear, and an example that shows us just how far games have come over the years. Rest in peace, Sir Dan.
-
Oct 23, 2019Medievil isn't what we could call a good remake. It's an old game, with old problems, that aren't solved by this reedition. Of course, it's nice and always funny to go through, especially with the great atmosphere, the fine humour and an excellent dubbing, but still, the game conserve all those camera and jumping problems.
-
Oct 23, 2019Ultimately, MediEvil doesn't have much going for it except for nostalgia. Everything about it is unexceptional, and it feels lackluster when compared to similar recent attempts to update PS1 classics. Without a fondness for Sir Dan and his antics, I'd be hard-pressed to say why MediEvil is worth playing. It's a game for fans, but little has been done to make this offering stand out. Perhaps it would've been better if Sir Dan had been left to his peaceful rest, but we can hope for a genuine next-gen MediEvil someday in the future.
-
Oct 23, 2019There's always an argument to be made for keeping an old game's “quirks” intact to preserve nostalgia, but there's still a line where useless things ought to killed off for good. That said, I have to acknowledge that only the die-hard fans of the hard-dyin' Dan Fortesque will enjoy this. The timeless Tim Burton-esque charm and the fine Lazarus job done on the visuals can only go so far. In the end, these old bones just creak too much.
-
Oct 23, 2019For those entering in here for the memories of a beloved game, I don’t want to knock the experience for you. This is the game you love! But unlike aforementioned remakes, nostalgia seems like a necessity to enjoy MediEvil rather than just being a bonus. Let all brave knights beware.
-
Oct 23, 2019MediEvil successfully brings Daniel Fortesque’s tale back from the dead yet again, but not nearly enough was done to modernize the mechanics of this remake.
-
Oct 23, 2019With so many retro remakes that feel like fresh experiences in this day and age, it's disappointing how dated MediEvil is. With that being said, it's definitely faithful so if you're a diehard fan then I'm sure you'll appreciate its swanky new visuals.
-
CD-ActionNov 25, 2019If you disregard the nostalgia factor, the game is anything but extraordinary. It won’t win over new, younger players... but on the other hand they are not the target audience. [13/2019, p.78]
-
Nov 15, 2019The remake of MediEvil can best be described as a missed opportunity. This was the moment to give Daniel a second chance and to re-introduce him to a younger audience, but Sony and Other Ocean seemed to be in a rush making this game on time for Halloween.
-
Nov 5, 2019Sadly, MediEvil hasn't changed enough since it's genesis to seduce the modern gamer. If the graphics are updated and the music still awesome, the dated gameplay and the framerate drops are too much to bear.
-
Oct 23, 2019I was already skeptical when announcing the remake of MediEvil. Can the PS1 classic keep up with modern titles with its rather shallow Hack & Slay gameplay? Unfortunately, the answer is a clear "no" - at least for those who did not play the original.
-
Oct 23, 2019This remake of MediEvil isn't all that fun to play in 2019, but it's still too much of a Halloween treat to dislike.
-
Oct 23, 2019MediEvil's PS4 makeover sees the classic brought back to life, and it's an extremely faithful remake that fans will love. However, many of the old issues return as well, such as a dodgy camera and stiff gameplay. Sir Dan die-hards will be able to forgive these leftover problems, as this is otherwise a solid remake overflowing with character. If you've any nostalgia for this retro Sony title, or are looking for something spooky to play this Halloween, MediEvil has never been better -- just be wary of the skeletons in its closet.
-
Oct 29, 2019MediEvil is a remake that should have taken more chances. Specifically, the gameplay needed to be reimagined for a 2019 audience. Instead, it just feels dated and obnoxious in a way that spoils its redeeming qualities.
-
Oct 29, 2019MediEvil does have some nostalgic charm, but due to its bevy of issues, it feels not just old, but undeniably outdated. For every part that helps us look back fondly on a time when games were made differently, there’s another that reminds us of how far we’ve come in those years since. MediEvil's delightful level and character design mostly still stands tall, but its combat and controls largely fall well short of what feels tolerable by modern standards, and it left me feeling wholly ambivalent to its existence.

-
Oct 24, 2019Daniel Fortesque's tale is retold with style, but the fundamentals frustrate.
-
Oct 31, 2019MediEvil's PS4 release is a remarkably faithful recreation of the 1998 classic, and that's a problem. While the remaster is a near-perfect recreation, it recreates something archaic that, even at the time, was rather clunky....Unfortunately, MediEvil needed a full overhaul or, better yet, a brand new game. An authentic recreation of an old and messy game isn't what the series should settle for.
