I just finished Andromeda (got early access to the full game) and I have to say its a great Mass Effect. The story is good too, but inpatient people won't like it, it's like a snowball, it's getting from boring to great. The combat system is just genius, best in ME series. I think most of the people complaining about this game didn't like Mass Effect in the first place. I loved Mass Effect 1 - 3 and Andromeda has met and exceeded every expectation I put on it. Mass Effect is definitely one of a kind, and despite the unfortunate conclusion of ME3, grabs you by the heart and creates some great memories, which is hard to say about the other 95% out there.

Andromeda does not deserve the hate its getting, plain and simple. The main cast is all fantastic, and the supporting cast are just as essential, with different characters blooming at different times, sometimes through direct conversations, and sometimes through eavesdropping via the metallic reverberations of their voices off of the hull as you're passing by. The detail to attention in this game is unreal. Leather pinches and squeezes audibly, dust and dirt build up on your visor and suit when you stay planet side on a desert planet for an extended period of time, and dynamic dialogue that reacts to your actions in the middle of gameplay?! Get. Out. Of. HERE!

Yes, there are issues with the animation of the character models, but that is such an underwhelming negative in comparison to the vast amount of quality content. And the prerendered movies? Outrageously awesome.

Keep on BioWare Montreal. Coming from someone who loves to create, I can imagine the pain that comes from receiving such negative feedback after fostering a project with such love, but please don't give in. As someone who respects the series very much, I can tell you guys I'm going to buy the **** out of the next Mass Effect game you guys release.

The game has one of the best game play tactics ever created. The game is not good as the three last games but it's worth a try.

Okay so this is game is clearly not the trilogy, nor it should be, however most people that review it just jumped on the bashing hype.

Bad: Animations sometimes, not always but sometimes they are pretty bad.
    - the enemies could have been more diverse
    - the explorations sometimes feel shallow like DA:I had some similar areas.
    - the space exploration and scanning is back and becomes boring despite the nice animation we get while jumping from planet to planet.

Good: The story is quite decent, also the history of the Ryders and Ryder Sr is nicely explained, why he was so cold, distant, what made him research SAM, and so on.
    - Companions are pretty diverse, also it shows us turians krogan salarians that are not the standard type of their races, Vetra is pretty much opposed to Garrus, as is Kallo Jath total opposite of Mordin but he is funny as hell, as are the rest. The dialogue with them reveal interesting things and they more diverse and also their beliefs.
    - Combat is great fluid flawless a bit slow at first but after getting some levels it becomes really fun.
    - Jet packs. Do i need to say more ?

    - Visuals while exploring are absolutely stunning on some planets and take your breath away.
-Diplomacy and how you handle diverse quests are definitely fun
    - Also side quests are pretty diverse you get quests where you have to make morality choices, for example let some on who is condemned unfairly although he wanted to kill that said character ? Release him and maybe he will do it again, or exile him and be sure he won't hurt any one else but this will probably kill him. You also have the basic quests go there do that, go find that, go scan that etc.
    - Combat is fluid and great, combos that you can later do alone or with your team are pretty awesome, It starts slow but after getting a few levels it becomes better and better.
    - Jet Packs. Do I need to say more ? Freaking jet pack makes me wonder how did we play the previous games without it.
    - The new Mako is great, it's everything the old Mako should be, you got 2 modes for it. It looks great it moves great.
    - The tempest looks good slick and fast totally different from the Normandy but a breath of fresh air, also the messages exchanged between them nice and sometimes funny. The ships seems way bigger inside than you would expect.
    - Crafting is simple good and straight, great for people who don't wanna waste a lot of time crafting something or are not fun of it.
-Weapons are pretty diverse and varies in range and utility. Melee weapons are a blast.

My advice: play the game if you can make your own idea and if you don't like it ask for a refund.
As far as i'm concerned this is a great game that gets a lot of unnecessary hate and bashing. I hope you guys at least play the game than give bad grades and reviews.

I will get to the point, is Mass Effect Andromeda better than the original trilogy, no. That is 3 games that built up a great story. Mass Effect Andromeda pretty much redid the first Mass Effect game. I will go into the pros and cons of Mass Effect Andromeda.

    Pros

Combat gameplay, by far the best in the series. The jetpack never gets old, it is a wonderful addition to the game. It is fast pace, you can now tech combo, which I think was not possible in previous games.

Side quests, there are some who say the side quests are awful. They are not in comparison with previous Mass Effect games. I am loving it right now, Each planet has an enemy stronghold (at least the first 2 planets) that you have to take out and there are several steps before doing it. Taking out mini bases around the map, freeing Angara (new race) from their cells who then help you fight in that area. Then taking out the main bases has a couple objectives, for example taking out the hanger to destroy their aircraft, before fighting the leader of the base.

Enemy AI, is good. This game gives you a challenge. No longer is this game just a cover shooter, the enemy will flank you, they will sometimes directly rush you and try to overwhelm you, or they will play defense and stay behind cover. Now this is all based on fighting the Kett. The other faction the Revenant fight somewhat differently, they are always out in the open, and rarely ever use cover. Being that they are robots and some of them fly, it makes sense.

Multiplayer, If you like Mass Effect 3 multiplayer, this is better and harder than Mass Effect 3. They reduce the wave count to 7, which at first I was a little disappointed, but I remember the first 3 rounds in ME3 being super easy and a waste of time. So by having only 7 waves, they increased the difficulty.

    In between pro and con

This could either be a pro or a con, but being able to change what spec you are on the fly, is pretty cool. Not being a class does in my opinion reduce replay value. But in return they allow you to do new game + as many times as you want to learn every skill.

Story, The game does start off slow, but picks up when you meet the Angara. I enjoy the story, but in the end everyone has their own tastes.

    Cons

A lot of technical issues. Yes, the human animations are bad. But if you can play Fallout 4 without complaining, then you can play this.

    PS4 framerate drops is annoying.

Custom Creator is limited. I have to say it is very hard to make a person you really want. They don't allow free reign in who you want to make. You have to choose a preset face and then slightly adjust them. Hair styles are better than previous Mass Effect games, but the facial hair is abysmal.

Overall, this game is good. All this game needs is more polish. It is disappointing that the animations feel outdated. But if you can get past that, this game is a lot of fun to play.

I do believe the creators of mass effect andromeda meant to live up to fans expectations but quite simply put they did not. Theres a number of keys issues ranging from graphical glitches, a cell shaded type of texture (Ive tried tweaking all my graphics settings and cant seem to find a resolution), poor dialogue/facial animations (This is an rpg after all, immersion and story is key), AI glitches that break immersion/ kill the tempo.

If this had been from a smaller studio of less talented developers then I would have more sympathy and understanding but due to the budget of this title and the creation time, I expected quite a high calibre of content.

Simply put ME:A is a poor attempt to carry on/revamp the series. Accepting this from a AAA studio is not on. Those giving this 1/10 and 10/10 alike have their own agendas to push I believe. Honestly I would give this game an honest 4 as I believe it is a blatant money grab to ride off the series while leaving the content hollow and generally unmoving.

Yes, it has its problems. The facial animation is not what I would expect from a triple-A game on a next-gen console, but it's hardly as bad as people are making it out to be. Addison, one of the Nexus (Andromeda Citadel equivalent) fixture characters is probably the worst, but you don't spend much time talking to her, and honestly, it's just not that awful.

I've seen quite a few reviews commenting on the ugliness of the women in the game, particularly the female Ryder twin. Personally, I find the female Ryder to be attractive to look at. More to the point, she looks believable. She's a space explorer, not a supermodel. Looks all come down to personal tastes, though, and if you don't like her look, you can customize her. This really is a non issue.

Overall, this is a beautiful game, and the combat is much improved. The Nomad replaces the Mako and the Hammerhead, and is likewise much improved, though it has no armament.

Probably my biggest criticism is that unless you're already a Mass Effect fan, there's not enough context. Biotics having a hard time fitting in, for example, need more explanation for a new player, as do things like the Krogan animosity toward the Salarians and Turians. Also, if you run a biotic character, Cora Harper, your one biotic human crew member does not offer any unique dialogue options like Kaiden Alenko did in Mass Effect in your early conversations with him. Since this the first game in a new series (?), I would have like to have seen more context to connect new players with the existing Mass Effect universe.

This game is written with the understanding that you already know the universe, and have already played through the first trilogy, which brings me to my final criticism: it does not feel like a Mass Effect game, not initially. The class and skill interfaces are set up very differently, and the bumpers don't bring up the power and weapon wheels like the previous games did. Certainly not a deal breaker by any means, but as a longtime player of the series, it meant that I had to relearn the game, rather than just jump right in as I was able to with ME2 and ME3.

The story takes a bit longer to get moving, but it makes sense, as it's an exploration game, rather than a military campaign with an exploration element, like the first game was. Once it gets going, though, it's a decent story.

All in all, this is a solid game, and if you liked the original Mass Effect, then you'll probably like Andromeda.

I was initially very skeptical of this game after seeing the early reviews and the widely negative reaction by the internet dude bro hive mind, however being a logical skeptic i chose not to trust the groupthink of the masses and actually play the game. though the game does have a bit of a slow start, so did literally all of the mass effect games but 2, i still found myself quickly falling in love with the quirky characters, and the gorgeous environments. The story telling has kind of taken a bit of a backseat in this entry in the franchise as bioware has decided to take a larger area approach to this game, much like with dragon age inquisition, however I still had plenty of gripping and engaging moments not only with the quests, but also with the breathtaking environments.

A Lot of people have been complaining about the facial animations, and while sometimes they aren't perfect you don't really notice anything hugely wrong in real time. Most of the "llol wow dude this game is garbo" screenshots would be the same if you took screenshots of a real life video of someone's face when they are in an unfortunately weird position between movements. AKA real life has those same "animation problems." As far as the writing being bad, I wouldnt say its any better or worse than the rest of the mass effect franchise, the main story isn't the greatest thing as it feels so loose compared to other games, but honestly the focus of Andromeda seems to be more exploration and taming the wild unknowns of andromeda vs rolling through it like a book which is fine, and honestly a fresh face for the series.

Lastly, a lot of the negative feedback on this game seems to be coming from the perspective of people who like to sling the "SJW cUck!" thing around, so if you are super scared of people who arent white hetero gender normative males then this isnt the game for you. However i really find these criticisms particularly weird because the mass effect franchise has been relatively diverse from the beginning, so these are obviously from people who haven't played the other games. Honestly, most of the negative reviews seem to be having that one thing in common, either they haven't played it and are just attacking it to be "hip," they never played the originals, or they just outright went into the game wanting to hate it.

Gone are the characters like Garrus, Wrex, Mordin, and Tali, which really made you want to explore and enrich your relationships with them. They've been replaced with what are arguably some of the worst party members ever put into a game. Sure, Drack is okay, but I've yet to feel anything like my experience in the first three games. This game may be huge and pretty open-world, but the vast empty areas with nothing but enemy spawn points, and the huge amount of fetch quests, and others which don't contribute to, or push you forward in the main quest line make it feel very much like the Hinterlands in Dragon Age Inquisition. Navigating the Galaxy Map is also a huge issue for me. It doesn't sound like much, but if you're a completionist like I am, the fifteen second animations between planets really add up and become wearisome. There are a few quests that I have truly enjoyed, but overall, I wish I hadn't purchased this game. Add to these issues all the bugs and performance issues- it really does not seem optimized at all-and you've got something I really haven't enjoyed so far. The combat is really the only greatly improved thing I've encountered so far, but that isn't nearly enough to make up for the rest of it. I'm only about twenty-twenty five hours in, so maybe something later on will help, like the ending of Dragon Age 2, but for now, I think a six is the highest I can give it.

This game does not have Casey Hudson's direction steering it, nor the narrative talents of Mac Walters and Drew Karpyshyn to prop it up- although Walters serves as the games director which ultimately, keeps it from being worse than what it could have been. This game was developed by the team that made ME3 multiplayer mode, which makes it their first AAA release, and for their first attempt, it is not a terrible one, but that fact that it IS their first is evident.

Let's just call this game what it is: Dragon Age: Inquisition with a Mass Effect coat of paint. The moment you land on Eos, you'll notice how similar the exploration mechanic is to DA:I. There's markers for landmarks, quests, fast travel spots; it basically uses the exact same system. This is not a bad thing if you enjoyed Inquisition(like I did), but shows a lack of experience or a fear of trying anything bold on the new development team's part. Still, it works for the most part. One of the better parts of exploring is the Nomad, which is a vast improvement over the Mako from ME1 and makes traversal much easier, even if it cannot be used offensively. Going off the beaten path is encouraged, but be warned of wildlife, enemies, and even the environment trying to kill you- Eos spends much of it's time being unsafe to travel on foot due to radiation for the first 5-10 hours.

The combat is this games highlight. ME3's multiplayer was a lot of fun to play, so it makes sense that the team knew how to translate fun, fast-paced combat to the main story. Your encouraged to keep moving, much like in games like Uncharted or Tomb Raider, as opposed to the more slower and cover-focused system from the previous Mass Effect games. The jet boost mechanic is a great addition and encourages new and fun ways to approach combat. You feel yourself getting pressured, boost into cover. Enemies hiding behind cover, boost up shoot them from the air as you hover. However, there is a downside to it: your squadmates. You cannot control them as much as you can in previous games. You can only direct them to a new position or order them to attack an enemy. They're serviceable enough to fight enemies but you can't coordinate attacks tactically, which means you're mostly on your own.

The new crafting system has been described as complicated and have terrible interface, and...all these things are true. If you're a casual gamer, the crafting system may take some getting used to. It's similar in nature to Dragon Age: Inquisition(which this game seems to have no problem borrowing heavily from), but it's layered under a somewhat tricky to navigate interface. That being said, crafting is the best way to get the best gear and if you have the patience, is worth the effort. The downside: the crafting(and gear in general) extends only to you. You cannot customize your squadmate's weapons and armor as in previous titles, they have their default gear and they're stuck with it for the game's duration.

Speaking of the squadmates: they're a mixed bag. A lot of them feel like stand-in for their much more popular and better written predecessors. Vetra is another visor-wearing Truian, Drack's the new Wrex/Grunt, Peebee's the new Liara(but behaves like Liara's more adventurous and somewhat annoying sister). Some of the new characters DO work. Cora and Liam are your new Kaidan and Ashely, only much more likeable. Jaal is sort of a mix between Thane and Javik from ME2 and ME3, but so far, I found him interesting enough to separate himself from them. Then you got the side characters who are almost entirely forgettable, like Kallo, the ship's pilot, who is a far cry from Joker.

The dialogue wheel that the developers talked up as being more situational and less binary than the Pargon/Renegade system is a disappointment to say the least. We were promised four choices, but I have rarely encountered them. The default seems to be too and they're limited to "casual/professional" or "emotional/logical". Basically, you can be Star-Lord or you can be Picard.

A lot of people have bashed the writing, and I feel it's undeserved. It is not as bad as they claim, but it never quite reaches the lofty standards set by ME2 or ME3. Still, you should have no trouble believing this is a Bioware game, even if it's story is pretty by-the-numbers.

Overall, Andromeda is not a bad game by any stretch. Hype and expectation are what is currently bringing it down. The technical problem were few and far between for me(I'm talking like two noticeable bugs over six hours that weren't game-breaking), the combat is a lot of fun, the exploration is serviceable, and the new characters are sure to resonate with someone. It's not the game many may have hoped for, but regardless it IS good to have Mass Effect back again, and hopefully we'll see more of it in the future.

The game's visuals are terrific (face animations goofy and now fixed by a patch), story is solid and battles are awesome. The best space exploration game on the market right now (July 2017)

Ok so I gave this a ten but really so far I'd give it about a 8. Thats just to counter balance the undeserved 0's. Just because you dont like something doesn't make it a zero. Not always action packed but definitely worth the money. You can level up your player how you want picking any skills you want to focus on and giving him a modifier based on the way you like to play. Its maybe 10 modifiers some for gun play, some for defense, some for melee, some for biotic powers, etc. Animations weren't omg awful to me, and i doubt they would be to most ppl it someone had pointed it out and halfway died over it lol. They're not that great but neither is a lot of games graphics in our generation n terms of facial expression so yeah. Multiplayer is fun and could be really un with a group of friends, you lvl up a specific character with locked in powers and modifiers but you can unlock new characters and anyone can use any gun so I had a god time with it so far. P.s looking at scores on metacritic by users and even by the critics sometimes will send you totally off lol. Blood borne got a 9 on here by both but that game seems like it was made for ps2 if you ask me. I would picked this over that 1000 times. And BB was my first dark souls esk game and this is my first ME game so yeah. My advice watch some youtube videos and try not to make a decision soley on critic and user reviews. Especially when a game has an abnormally high or low rating. Expand

The game has it's flaws, no doupt about that, the character animations as number one to name.

But I think if you are actually play the game and don't let it rune for you by criticism completely blown out of proportion, you may be surprised. The story gets considerably more interesting after the trial ends, imho becoming a Bioware game worthy storyline whit a lot of great moments.

Planets and places are beautiful to a point where I stopped walking/driving to enjoy the view.
The voice acting of Fryda Wolff is very good and that also counts for a lot of the other voice actors.

All in all, for me this is a great game with some flaws, (But hey, I never played a game without flaws, did you?)

What a half baked piece of trash. Biggest disappointment of year. I feel I have been scammed out of money and forced to sit through some marxist indoctrination program. Shame on you EA! Shame on you.

    Don't believe the negative hype.

Yes, it has bugs. Yes, it has a lot of bugs. Yes, the facial animations are not that great and sometimes really bad. But at it's core it has everything that has made this series great. Some characters are bland, but there have always been bland characters (Ashley?). Of course we're not as close to the characters as we were in Mass Effect 3 - but we'll

Of course we're not as close to the characters as we were in Mass Effect 3 - but we'll get there in the sequels. The graphics are amazing, the combat is miles ahead of the last game and the story is a very good start into this new adventure.

Without the bugs (which will be squashed by a few patches) this game easily is a 9/10 compared to most of the crap out there.

And the user score is a joke because of the troglodyte Trump-voters who give this a 0 because it features some strong female characters. Please go back to your mommy and tell her how evil all those "SJWs" have been to you. And just for that I'm going to add another point to my rating, just because of the strong female characters.

Game is absolutely beautiful and filled with vibrant scenes of color and imagination. No the game is not perfect, suffers from some poor character models, but other than that it has been a wild fun ride so far. The majority of people hating on the game it sounds like are not giving it a chance or trying to hold it up to too high of standard created by impatience and lack of focus. Enjoyable if you are selective
Let's begin with the obvious: the facial animations are poor and the writing is nowhere near the standards of the previous games. There are a lot of quests that are obnoxiously "fetch-questy" but they are nowhere near essential to progression and will only bother you if you are a compulsive completionist.

That said, in being selective about which quests I take on, I have found myself consistently excited to continue on with playing the game. The combat is challenging with a healthy amount of enemy variety as well as drastically different weapons to choose from. A change to your load out completely changes the feeling of encounters and causes you to adjust your play-style accordingly.

There is far too much to touch on each aspect of this game but also captures what makes it better than lots of people are saying: there are so many parts to this game and there is a lot of good to be found amongst the clutter. Bioware seemed to favor quantity over quality in this title and there is no doubt that it is the weakest game to sport the "Mass Effect" title. That said, when viewed as a stand-alone product free from the expectations of the franchise, I really believe that there is a whole lot to enjoy here. I certainly am enjoying it despite the many flaws that have been largely focussed on in the reporting of this game.

As a Mass Effect fan I was disappointed at first but now that I am 50 hours in this game is fantastic. It's much much better than what the haters are saying. Gamers are just ultra picky these days.

This is my first Mass Effect game so there isn't any nostalgic baggage that would affect this review.

Despite the rubbery facial animations and character models, tacky dialogue with some really cringe worthy lines (especially that one trans gender Andromeda explorer on Eos) and somewhat jerky combat I have to say that this game deserves a solid 8 after 30hrs. Exploring feels worthwhile,

Exploring feels worthwhile, locales are diverse enough, combat gets better when you get used to it and crafting through research paces the character improvements nicely. Yes there are glitches and bugs - some game breaking (meaning you need to load an older save to try to progress) and some just annoying as hell. They are probably working on the bugs already so there is a good chance that some of them are addressed already by the time you read this.

It might be the biggest, most complex and action packed game in the franchise, but Mass Effect: Andromeda is also the least convincing one. The dated facial animations, the inconsistent writing quality and the regularly occurring bugs take you out of the experience too often. On top of that, BioWare has not used the concept of a whole new universe to its full potential, which often makes it feel like Mass Effect: Andromeda has not left our Milky Way at all.

While it’s underwhelming in places, there’s a lot to like as you venture into the weirder parts of Andromeda. Frequent technical issues hamper the experience a bit, as does an uninspiring main story. [June 2017, p66]

A welcome, if slightly patch return for Mass Effect. The script has problems, but combat is bloody brilliant. [May 2017, p.62]
