It's not fair to write a review without playing the game, but I don't think I can continue. I'd rather play Horizon or Wildlands again than keep going through this sesspool. I feel bad for those lazy ass devs, they are going to get hauled over the coals for this flop. Our local store has zero launch marketing. I though I had the launch date wrong. I'm taking it back to swap for pretty much anything else. Probably put a pre-order on prey or pickup dishonoured 2. Expand

When playing on any difficulty higher than normal the enemies become bullet spunges. The fun part is that they're still overly aggresive and just keep walking towards you while insta-blasting your shields. As the AI of your allies is about as good as having a twig to back you up, you're mostly fighting alone. This meens you'll be seeing a lot of checkpoints.

Yes, checkpoints.... And they're at some unbelievable poor places. I can't count all the times I had to go over the same four or five minutes or walking/driving to get back to the point I was. When I got there I basically got shot down by an overwhelming amount of enemies yet again. This is just the most lazy kind of combat design I've seen in years. Add to that faults that should have not been close to a released game like enemies moving through objects (still being able to hit you, but not vice verse) and mistakes the average steam greenlight developer would even cringe at.

If you're thinking of buying this game for the gameplay: leave it.
If you're thinking of buying this game for the graphics: hahahahahahahaha, nope.
If you're thinking of buying this game for the story: look elsewhere.

It's a shame that the ME title got put onto this dirthole of a game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have some good things to say. I also have some not-so-nice things to say.

Overall, I have fun playing Andromeda, and that's the big question I tend to ask myself before I play a game: Will I have fun? Yes, Andromeda is fun... but is it as fun as the Shepard trilogy? Eh... I'm conflicted, but mostly, I can't say it is. Good.... but not fantastic. If I was to give the Shepard trilogy 10/10 (and I would), this would be 8.

I'll first go into my negative issues, then my positives.

    CONS:
    1. The main story's basic idea-- traveling to Andromeda and settling there-- isn't a bad one. In fact, I was excited for the great Milky Way pilgrims. I also loved learning about the angara. The problem is the villain. He's basically Corypheus, another Big Bad who's evil for the sake of being evil. I knew from the moment I met him, I'd beat him by the end by sacrificing nothing whatsoever. It was pointless to see him as a threat. And just like in Dragon Age Inquisition (which Bioware promised this game is nothing like), he wants you because you have a power he doesn't. This is all sounding familiar, and I'm kind of bored of it by now.
With that said... after I concluded the story, I was smiling when talking to my crew, and I felt proud of my accomplishment. Even if it felt very feasible before I did it.

    2. The lack of seriousness in conversation. Shepard's Mass Effect had an impact because of its cinematic drama. Now every character acts like a smug, college-grad D-bag, from the School of Nathan Drake. I HATE that smartass attitude, and it makes me want to punch every person who talks like it. It made me like the characters A LOT less.

    3. Not a big fan of the combat. It's not bad... but it's not as fun as ME3's (in my opinion). I played an Infiltrator in all three MEs, and loved it. ME3 especially, thanks to slow-mo targeting. That slow-mo targeting doesn't exist in Andromeda, and made sniping COMPLETE HELL, because enemies move CONSTANTLY. Without bullet time and "concentration" mods, sniping isn't nearly as fun as it used to be. As you're aiming, you're getting rained on by bullets and can die in an instant. Even with tactical cloak, it can be annoying. I miss ME3 Infiltrator. I also hate the cover system. In the snap-to-cover system in original games, I at least knew I was IN cover.

    4. I usually play a gay male character. There was only one guy to romance, and we didn't even get a sex scene. It faded to black. Kind of insulting, to be honest. I read "hip gyrating" and "moaning" was in this game. Guess that's for the straight people only.

    5. Animations aren't great. They aren't the worst I've ever seen either, and I think their terribleness was highly over-exaggerated-- but they still look "off". The weird thing was, the animations suddenly, out of completely f***ing nowhere, became AWESOME in the final story mission. Everyone moved more fluidly, including Ryder. it really threw me off my guard. I couldn't even pay attention to the dialogue because I was so amazed. Why didn't the rest of the game look like that? I saw that and said "that's what I want!"

    PROS:
    1. Exploration. I loved this a lot more than the main story. I loved it so much that I saved it until after the main story. In fact, I went through the main story looking forward to the exploration. It was worth it.

    2. The new race, angara, and their history. Jaal is by far the best character in this whole game, and I loved getting to know him. I took him on almost every mission.

    3. Conversation options based on personality. At first, I hated the idea of being rid of Paragon/Renegade. Now, I really like the change. People aren't black and white. Neither should Ryder be. You can still do "d**k-ish" things, just in different ways.

    4. A lot more skills and abilities than the previous games. One thing I love in RPGs is experimenting with options, and man does Andromeda have a lot of those, skill-wise. I can literally be any kind of Pathfinder I want. I recently made myself a construct-obsessed engineer who carries a really big f**king gun.

    5. Loyalty missions making a comeback. I love those. Even if they don't feel as impacting as ones in the past.

    6. It wasn't overly long. This is a complaint for some, but I hate 100+ hour games, because it lowers replay value. I never replayed DAI because it was just too damn long.

    7. There's a lot of stuff to do. I mean a LOT. Maybe even too much.

    8. The vaults are f**king awesome.

Overall, I do really like Andromeda, a lot. But I can't say I love it yet. They left options open for future sequels and DLC, and honestly, I'm more excited about those and what comes in the future than I was at completing the main story. I want to see how my choices carry out later on. If they have me excited for that, then they did make me invested, and that's all I ask. The game is definitely not bad enough to warrant a "zero out of ten."

Since Im playing this on PS4 it lags like hell specially those over rendered CGI background lighting, texture everything else is unpleasant the only thing enjoyable is the gameplay though its pretty much like a basic TPS shooter game with jumping jetpack joyride feel of the game. Though nothing is innovative when I say nothing is innovative nothing is new! and from my perspective that the game isn't developed by BIoware but by some interns who got their idea from potatoes because your Pathfinder looks like a potato specially Sarah Ryder. Alright! less ranting and more to technicalities of the game.

Graphics in this game is very bad indeed its really bad that makes my eyes experienced a low stance katana katana slash from William. Its poorly designed that you won't admire it. In Final Fantasy XV despite of its under developed game play and customization the graphics are really top notched.

Gameplay is the same nothing is innovative if they call jet pack is something innovative then you guys are wrong jet pack feature is already seen in various shooter games and oh dashing mid air looks cool? I bought a game with nothing new Metal Gear Solid V is even better than this.

Story is by far the worst in the Mass Effect Trilogy heck its even worst than Nioh. Dialogues are poorly written that it makes the character sounds like a Persona high school student even the narrative in the cutscenes, In comparison to a Yoko Taro story telling this is rubbish like how many team does Bioware/EA has to write a story?

This isn't worth $60 I suggest if you love RPG specialist JRPG's wait for Persona 5 you'll be wasting your time in playing this game

I couldn't get far on the first planet after running into the aliens as the game engine would completely wonk out on random slopes and initiate that hilarious foot shuffle thing that stops you from moving. This along with the absurd auto saving interval meant I was replaying large sections every time I died from game bugs.

As a result, being an Adept biotic now is boring as all hell. In a battle, your companions move erratically and bizarrely, coupled with their incredible inability to do almost anything useful you will find yourself wondering why the hell Bioware even bothered. You're not a commander anymore — you're a god damn chump with two lame-ass AI following you. So combat, in the end, kind of ruined too.

It's impressive that beauty of the galaxy is incorporated, but beauty of creatures and species is not. Why force me to be a hideous, awkward af squeeb face, no matter how much I tweak in character creation? Surely beauty of the face must still exist in the future. Or at least give me some in-game backstory or reason as to why every human looks like a troglodyte, grease baboon with antithetical emotional responses. In each dialogue interaction, I'm either laughing or just creeped the **** out. How is it that with more money, resources, and time, the characters are worse than 10 years ago? No one on the team cross-referenced and said "Oh **** it was better before..."?

The game is a spit in the face of all Mass Effect fans. I felt masochistic playing it, a weird sense of self-torture and empty promise. Waste of money. ****ING REGRET buying it. EA can suck it.

I have enjoyed aspects of the game and nowhere near the level I would of expected. Many areas are without proper polish and the formula doesn't seem to have improved. At one point I am looking at an image of the universe that is flat (obvious skybox), poor detail and ruins the atmosphere; this sums up the game..

Some of the missions, or I should say MOST of them are shallow and boring. The side quests, which are usually the bread and butter for RPG games, are hollow and lifeless. Some of the side quests are outright ridiculous and unacceptable for an RPG in 2017. One of them had me speak to an Angaran women who was upset because her sister was missing, Literally ten feet down the path and you find the body of her sister, scan it, then return to the women and she says oh I told her not to work alone. Mission Completed. Really? Is that what Bioware considers a side quest to be? World of Warcraft had side quests with more content and that's saying A LOT.

The primary gameplay loop is going to planets, improve the living conditions so it can be settled on, and that's it. The first planet was good even though the overall design was boring and empty. It had a sense of purpose. But that feeling you get from exploration and seeing things for the first time quickly wanes and is totally gone after the first planet. All the planets are approached in the same way, you go to these underground vaults, (which by the way all look and feel identical), do these terrible puzzle mini games, and interact with computer consoles by holding E. Its sad that the main plot point in the game, the ancient technology vaults, were copy pasted throughout all the planets. They even recycle the voice overs from Ryder and your allies. Always the same lines for every vault, "ok, remenant vault. Lets see if we can get this place running." Then at the end: "That never gets any less terrifying." I mean couldn't they have recorded like two extra lines so its not the same stuff over and over and blatantly lazy?

Everything feels hollow in the game, even the rich Mass Effect mythos. The previous games all had such personality in the galaxy and alien races, that wonderful charm and intrigue that Bioware was once capable of producing. But in Andromeda, not even your team mates are interesting. The team banter during gameplay is GONE. The conversations that your team would have, during and outside of combat. Instead you get LITERALLY two, or maybe three different lines that they repeat like clockwork, every five minutes. Its a HUGE turn off for me, and it just seems lazy. Hearing "I wonder if the Angara would let us train with them?" over and over from Cora makes me not even want to have her come with me when I go out on missions. It just constantly pulls you out of the immersion and highlights how lifeless and hollow your team is. I'm not sure how Bioware could have gone backwards like that, considering even the first Mass Effect had better design in so many different aspects, but its sad.

A lot of people are upset because there is really not much technical advancement from the original ME games. I mean they have had so long since the last one, what like six years? Its baffling and hard to understand how or why this game is less impressive than ME:2 or 3. I am so disappointed, this was supposed to be a classic, like Witcher 3. But just another rare miss, another game with great potential that falls short of greatness. But that doesn't mean this game isn't fun or entertaining. I was expecting to be addicted and in love with it, sadly, I boot it up and can only stand playing it for a few hours a day, and then I'm sick of it. Ill finish it, but I'm at the point where I feel like I'm just trying to get my moneys worth and playing it is almost forced. There are a lot of great moments, but many bland moments in between those few good ones. Critics bashed the beginning of the game but I actually LOVED the beginning and thought it was amazing, it lost steam after the first planet. Heres to hoping that Bioware can bring ME series back to greatness. Or maybe its time to ditch the series and move onto a new IP.

I've played all 3 and I knew with a different development team that this game isn't going to compare. So my standards aren't set so high. Think of it as Dragon Age: Inquisition in space. Here's my breakdown:

    Pros
    - Combat is exciting and faster pace with the introduction of the jump pack and dodge ability
    - Large planet sandboxes with interesting terrain.
    - Single Player and Multi Player trophies are combined (Don't play MP? You can get their trophies by completing certain SP tasks and vice versa).
    - Large array of Weapon/armor customisation and development and Mods.
    - The Nomad Land Rover is fun to drive
    - They bring back Horde Mode from ME 3 and also Strike Teams

    Cons
    - Facial animations are crap
    - Squad mate NPCs are forgettable and have no strong link with Protagonist
    - The cover system in combat sucks and you pay dearly with it (same style they use with Ghost Recon: Wildlands)
    - Resource gathering on planets is boring and most of the time unrewarding (you spend a minute flying to a planet and finding out you get fk all)
    - The Tempest is tiny compared to the Normandy. Doesn't feel alive.
    - Glitches and bugs everywhere (most are pretty funny)

Overall, 6. I seriously hope they learn from all these bad reviews,

The gameplay features are poorly translated from previous games in what feels like a soul-less attempt to win over former fans. They never even address the third game which was one of the worst cliff-hangers in gaming history.

The only reason I'm rating this game above a 0 is that I was able to sit through it in it's entirety and the game is playable. Buggy, boring, bland, and soul-less, but playable.

This game had a massive budget and took five years to produce. This is nothing more than pathetic. Don't play this game and don't give EA games your money if this is the type of product they produce.

Individually speaking, this was the biggest disappointment of ANY series. It's not even the horrible animations, poor dialogues, lack of any emotional connection to the characters; the main thing wrong with this Mass Effect is the fact the missions are boring, nothing really happens. It's a very cheap spin-off.

-Boring/arcade-ish gameplay that feels targeted for small children
-Mediocre graphics most of the time
-Exploration is pointless (unless youre only searching for loot, dont expect to find any exciting story elements at all)

I tried really hard to finish the game, just to make my money worth something, but unfortunately i couldn't

And this could have been simply overlooked if the game had a good design, if the animations were at LEAST decent, if the writing wasn't just horrendous and if the game did not have more glitches than Mass Effect 1 that came out in 2007, but no. It's not. It's as horrible as the news about it are, if not worse

EA - hope you crash and burn and stop taking other developers down with you into your pile of garbage that you call home

As a lot of reviewers i'm a big Mass Effect Lover. I love the universe, the roleplay and the charismatic Shepard Team.

This game is a BIG SHAME! It's a broken game and a shadow of Mass Effect. The characters are ugly and it's a will of the developpers according to a "Social Justice Warrior" point of view... The universe is boring and empty with a lot of Fedex secondary quest... All

I don't touch this game anymore, I'm waiting full of patch...

It's not Mass Effect, it's Dragon Age Inquisition in the space. Bioware does not exist any more. It's so sad.

Since it's in a different galaxy, there's a sense of wonder that's returned from exploration and charting places previously uncharted versus visiting known locations as in previous games. I give it an 8/10 and am hoping that they somehow improve the human facial animations in a later patch. While it isn't game breaking, it can break immersion at times but overall, it's just one small piece of a much larger game; a game that is worth your time. Expand

Poor graphical quality, full of glitches and bugs, the biggest gaming disappointment of my life. I'd prefer to play an HD remaster of the previous three. Expand

What a flop of a mass effect game.

The good: Combat style, and skill point placement The bad: Everything else. I will keep the review short. If you are a mass effect fan, dont get the game it will destroy the series. The game makes mass effect 3 poor story line look good. If you are a new player to the series, go for it, but after you beat it, go buy mass effect 2 and play a good

Ultimately, BioWare has failed completely. I dont know if this is because EA owns them and EA has failed to make a good game in awhile or why, but this game had so much potential and it failed. Just wait till all that not free DLC is released, which may make this game decent.

It might be the biggest, most complex and action packed game in the franchise, but Mass Effect: Andromeda is also the least convincing one. The dated facial animations, the inconsistent writing quality and the regularly occurring bugs take you out of the experience too often. On top of that, BioWare has not used the concept of a whole new universe to its full potential, which often makes it feel like Mass Effect: Andromeda has not left our Milky Way at all.

While it’s underwhelming in places, there’s a lot to like as you venture into the weirder parts of Andromeda. Frequent technical issues hamper the experience a bit, as does an uninspiring main story. [June 2017, p66]

A welcome, if slightly patch return for Mass Effect. The script has problems, but combat is bloody brilliant. [May 2017, p.62]
