This is quite possibly the worst triple A sports title since the 16-bit era. EA should be absolutely ashamed at the product they created. This is nothing more than a low budget asset flip and it is abhorrent that the NFL allows exclusive sim licensing to EA.

Madden 21 can be summed up in four words: same s**t, different year.

Madden 21 is just another re-iteration of the exact same poor product that EA has been releasing for the last 10 years. EA's complacency due to its anti-consumer stranglehold on the NFL simulation football license is just as apparent this year as it has been for the past decade.

Franchise Mode: FM has once again gone completely untouched and still does not come close to resembling what the mode used to be in 2005. There is absolutely no depth and no replayability in Franchise mode or Face of the Franchise (the new attempt at Career Mode/Superstar Mode). Face of the Franchise is plagued with horrible cringeworthy writing and an extremely short storyline with meaningless "choices". The core Franchise community has been completely neglected once again in favor of focusing and investing in the pay-to-win arcade modes, mainly MUT. 5000 characters are not enough to explain everything that needs to be improved/fixed in Franchise Mode. I advised everyone to check out 3 channels on Youtube who have made extremely detailed videos outlining everything wrong with Madden Franchise Mode: ShutdownSafety21 (Ryan Moody), SOFTDRINKTV, and ThatFranchiseGuy. Keep the hashtag #FixMaddenFranchise trending on twitter, the community needs to keep our voices heard until EA restores Franchise mode to its former glory. The community deserves better.

Gameplay: The gameplay is still the same handful of canned animations from the last 5 years that make every game extremely boring and predictable. Animations still fail to blend properly most of the time which causes awful-looking interactions between players, and most animations have visual cues that make it extremely easy to predict outcomes of a play. Referees are still missing which is still a major complaint that EA has yet to address. Overall, it is clear that the Frostbite engine is not capable of replicating real-life football, and EA really needs to rebuild this game on a physics-based engine. The addition of X-factors only serves to make the gameplay less like actual NFL simulation. This shift to dumbed-down arcade-style gameplay is clearly intended to appeal to younger players who are more inclined to carelessly spend money on microtransactions. The Madden devs and executive teams have lost any and all intentions of replicating real-life football.

Presentation: Visual game-day presentation is the exact same bland repetitive animations from the last 5 years. This includes team entrances, sideline clips, and SB win celebrations. The pre-game, post-game, and half-time shows/reports are extremely inadequate in giving you stats/storylines about the game and the season in general. The commentary library consists of the same boring and predictable lines that we have been hearing for the past 5 years. The commentary team is devoid of any personality or passion and often say lines that are irrelevant to what is happening on the field. Madden desperately needs a complete presentation overhaul to get on par with NBA2K's presentation and commentary.

In conclusion, Madden 21 gets a 0 because of what it should have been. Ever since the transition onto the next generation (Xbox 360/PS3), EA has had 11 YEARS to rebuild this game, and they have gotten nowhere. 11 years of empty promises and microtransactions make it clear that with a lack of any competitor in the NFL simulation video game market, EA is able to remain complacent and neglect anything that isn't MUT. Despite what IGN has claimed for the last 5 years, EA has yet again failed to make any real "steps in the right direction".

This game, more so than iterations in the past, is a carbon copy of it's predecessor. You may think this is an exaggeration, but you can see instances where they have literally copy and pasted assets. One example off the top of my head, Miles Garrett's X Factor description lists him as 23 and not 24. It was ripped directly from last year's title. This is a small detail, but it goes to show how little care was put into making the game feel unique. The developers are aware of the fact that they are lazy and are too lazy to hide their laziness.

The game-play feels pretty untouched from last year. The jukes feel a bit slower and I find that the CPU gets called on pass interference fairly often. Outside of that, the game plays very similar to last year. If you liked the game-play in 2020, this game-play will be no different.

They included a new game mode called Yard. It feels like a combination of Superstar KO and NFL Street. It's reasonably fun, but very arcade-y. EA owns the rights to make a simulation style NFL game, and instead have focused on the arcade aspects.

Franchise mode is completely unchanged aside from a change in color and the font is bolded. That's it. I cannot find a single other difference. This is by far the most egregious issues because fans have been outspoken for their wish for improved franchise modes.

Overall, I know nothing I or other reviewers say will change anything. It's like when you're realizing that you can't change your S.O. and have to let them go. I think it's time I let Madden go. I know EA won't miss me, but I miss Madden.

EA execs have neglected Madden fans for years and this year is the tipping point. This game is a shell of its former self on life support. For years important core features have been removed from the simulation experience EA has the exclusive contract to deliver in favor of microtransactions.

I'm personally of the opinion this game will not be quality until two dominoes fall, both pertaining to franchise mode, the simulation game mode only EA can make. First, full team staffs need added. This game has head coaches and owners. That's it. We need full front offices with rated owners, general managers, and scouting departments. We need full coaching staffs with rated offensive, defensive, and special teams coordinators. Position coaches would be nice, but everything just mentioned prior are in other sport video games. There's no excuse for them to not be in Madden. Second, Madden needs to add compensatory picks. This is tied for my most important domino because this is essential for other features to work functionally. Trade logic, free agency, meaningful scouting, and draft class depth will never be correct until compensatory picks are added to the game. Baseball has arbitration, in their video game. Basketball has bird rights, in their video game. A simulation football experience needs compensatory picks. It doesn't even need to be perfect as compensatory picks are commonly a guessing game, but they impact so much that it cannot be excluded from the simulation experience franchise mode. We are always missing an entire round of players being drafted without them just for starters.

Scouting needs completely overhauled. Knowing the top three attributes of players and their combine isn't enough. Partner with The Draft Network, ESPN, NFL Network, and Bleacher Report. Have each of them provide scouting reports for each player so we can see multiple opinions on the same player. Then give us a full combine experience where we can question players individually to learn about their character. Character then fits with team culture and chemistry. This paragraph alone should tell you how much immersion is missing from the game.

Gameplay is also terrible. It is animation based and ridiculously holographic. Players are commonly going through players; the ball constantly goes through players. The OL has no logic and sense of creating a pocket. Referees don't exist, they do in NBA and MLB video games. MLB even includes calling tendencies. Madden doesn't even have defensive holding, one of the most commonly flagged penalties in the NFL, in their game. Give us rated zebra crews with their flag throwing tendencies and accuracy. Give us replays of the penalty with commentary on if they got it correct. Challenges are also pointless. The game needs to give us a menu of what we're challenging. That's just the tip of the iceberg for gameplay issues.

I don't play MUT because it promotes children gambling. I'm not qualified to review it, but I hear it is also a copy and paste from last season.

Madden added They Yard, an arcade mode that adds additional revenue streams for EA through microtransactions. While this mode has plenty of potential to become something awesome, this was not the year to add a new mode.

The main consumer fan base for Madden is their franchise players. For years, we fans have been asking for so many features. This review by no means includes everything Madden needs to add to its simulation football experience or needs to improve about its gameplay. I could write an entire thesis paper of ways to improve this game.

Final lines: Madden is a shell of its former self. It's a good to great arcade game, but EA has the exclusive rights to deliver a simulation experience. Imagine you or I as a person hiring an interior designer, which EA is. You hire them to create a nursery room. They give you an arcade room decked out with games requiring coins to play that designer EA continues to profit on. If that happened, the designer would get an awful review and should be fired. That's what Madden is and why they are being deservedly slammed with negative reviews, including this one. I recommend boycotting this game until the executives at EA step back and let the developers create the simulation experience EA used to deliver decently well in the once great Madden game. This game spits on everything John Madden stood for when he agreed to let his name be used for the game. EA should be ashamed. Hopefully they listen for Madden 22. To quote the judge in Billy Madison, I award them 0 points, and may God have mercy on the souls of the executives at EA who dictate what is developed in Madden.

I have played madden for 20 years. This is by far the worst madden i have ever played. The game freezes it's frame rate on nearly every field goal to the point where i miss. Did they not test the game prior to launching it? They should have just kept everything from madden 20 and just update the rosters. They need to patch it up real quick.

The way the offensive line play’s is laughable the way the defensive ends always give up the edge is laughable, Those are offenses that Nfl Teams will Cut you for and send you home if you cannot do those basic things . The way weight doesn’t matter in Madden is ridiculous , players like Derrick Henry are Feared by defensive backs , The way all players have the ability to hit stick is so unrealistic, Dbs should wear during a game after tackling big HBs the whole game it should carry out to the next game if u had a rough game it probably should carry on to week practices or the next game ... Ultimate Team has the right foundation, but they need to input more effort. The Yard was a good addition, however it lacks content. Not fun unless you’re playing with friends.

Franchise Mode is once again ignored and boring. It lacks options- EA clearly doesn’t care about this mode unfortunately because it’s and exact copy and paste. There is so much untapped potential in the game mode.

Face of the Franchise is cheesy and unrealistic. It’s far too easy and predictable. They should go back to the route that they had in the last NCAAF game. Plus the storyline cuts off after you make it to the NFL. It feels unrewarding.

Summary: Madden 20 was a step in the right direction, but Madden 21 just feels like a dud. It’s boring, and it’s too similar to Madden 20. Many of the game modes don’t have enough content or were just recycled from last year. It’s unfortunate however I’m sure the pandemic had something to do with the obvious lack of effort

People *mostly* rightfully complain about the lack of franchise mode and depth, but thats ok if there is really good gameplay... There isn't. The gameplay is super repetitive and you can see the same animations 8+ times per game, and they are the same animations from past Maddens, making it more repetitive. Your players will catch, get tackled, hurdle, get their ankles shattered, intercept passes, tightrope the sidelines, toe tap the sidelines, fall over, look like n64 characters on the sidelines, get stiff armed, block/block shed, and to be honest, do everything in the same exact way multiple times per game. The animations are not even close to real football, which would be ok if it was an arcade football game... It isn't. The animation based gameplay would be ok if there were many animations for certain player positions and scenarios... Not only "there aren't" but it would be super unrealistic to take the time to make all those animations. Which makes you wonder... why they decided to make the game with the Frostbite engine, with animation dependent gameplay in the first place. Another problem with the gameplay is that with it being animation based, there is no player "stick skill" or anything along those lines, because the entire game revolves around hoping you get the right animation. Jump balls are just saying "Wow I hope that corner grows 2 left feet and gets a bad animation" instead of something along the lines of "Wow I hope my 99 overall player has better hands than this 9th string JV corner". I shouldn't have to hope on animations when stick skill is a selling point. Players standing still can shake of a hit stick from a linebacker sprinting full tilt at them. The pass trajectory is awful, every pass is just a glorified bullet pass, I’m not sure why making the ball travel in a parabola is difficult, but (believe it or not) I don't design video games so I don't know. Linebackers no longer have a 9' 13" vertical when intercepting passes, which is a good change, but an unnecessary change if the pass trajectory had more of an arc instead of a laser. This poor gameplay would be ok if the depth of franchise and other modes made up for it... They don't (I’m starting to notice a trend here) EA has many ways to fix their game and either won't/can't for whatever reason, which would be ok if they told us the reason... THEY DON'T! We can't be understanding because they won't share anything for us to understand... Sheesh. I’m not a franchise guy but there are enough franchise guys that I think everyone understand the point. The #FixMaddenFranchise has been going around and what we got was potential patch notes that will probably never happen. The last thing I’m going to touch on is the NFL exclusive licensing. This is just a monopoly, thats it. This monopoly would be ok if Madden was an ok game... It isn't. Its just a bad product, there is no way around that. That would be ok if Madden was a bad product if there were other potentially better simulation NFL football games on the market... (You guessed it) There aren't because of the exclusive rights. The exclusive rights also makes this NFL fans only option, and thats not ok. The yard is cool I guess, but its monetized for no reason, Face of the Franchise isn't interesting and is dull. The two positives this game has is that its the only NFL game, and that The Yard is "cool i guess". Now I’m going to go buy All Pro Football 2K8 for $5 instead of this $60 "product". And Clint Oldenburg, if you're reading this, 2 is better than 1, but 0.4 is somehow worse than 1, this is a sign, READ THE FREAKING SIGN... sorry, if you for some ungodly reason, you read this, have a cookie... You deserve it! :) 0/10 too much water Expand

Here's an honest, fair review, even though EA has neglected the core game itself over micro-transactions.
Pro's: Wow, where to start? There aren't too many.
Graphics (8/10) are improved, slightly, and the player movement is a bit smoother. The rookie bio pics look slightly more photo realistic and aren't as jarring when sorting through a roster with current players and auto-simulated rookies. A few player models still have heads that are too large for the body, but overall player likeness is better. However, this should be expected from a billion dollar company like EA..
Gameplay (4/10) This might be a bit generous, but it's a least playable. Again, it feels like a patch but there are some minor improvements, mainly the skill sticks and d-line play. Playing d-line is a viable option now. I also like that the game play is slower and deliberate and a bit less arcade like. The problem is, games feel scripted and rely to heavily on animations. If a gang tackle is occurring and I'm running up to the ball carrier, I should be able to land a hit stick in certain situations (if a RB or WR is being stood up or trying to break a tackle), but you can't bc you are not a part of the gang tackle animation. Animations also take plays out of bounds which gives the appearance of a late hit, or it just looks bad. Overall, EA does a poor job of simulating real life football.
The Yard, FOTF, MUT: (0/10) or I DON'T CARE. MUT has ruined gaming with micro-transactions (go ahead and waste $ each year re-buying cards). FOTF looks generic and the fact that you get the same outcome and only get to participate in partial college games is laughable. I will eventually try The Yard, but a last minute unfocused attempt to prepare for competition is not why I buy this game. Honestly, they need to package MUT and The Yard as a separate 'game' so fans of simulation football have a chance at a decent game.
Franchise (110) gets a 1 bc the menu background is blue and I love blue. Yes, the text reads better but honestly the UI was fine. Otherwise, Franchise mode is EXACTLY THE SAME!!!!!!!!!! The scenario engine was neglected, so no new roster competition scenarios, trade, injury, mentor-ships, etc. was updated or added. This one feature should have multiple layers, yet is one layered and microwaved leftovers. Scouting is the same, trades are the same and still broken. No stat tracking, qb pressures and hits aren't a stat; sacks still aren't recorded correctly. There is no historic stat tracking, still, and you can't sign free agents to any contract type unless you are in the free agency period. Rosters aren't up-to-date nor do they have most undrafted rookie free-agents which is a HUGE part of roster building and adding depth. Within 2 weeks of the draft most undrafted rookies have signed; there is no reason these players aren't in the game or if they are they are generally added very late into the year. There's no combine, no rookie mini-camp/training camp; practice is stripped down still. You still can't adjust player arch-types within a scheme. The list goes on and on...and let's not forget the bugs. Lost of bugs. Some I haven't seen mentioned: cannot assign players to formation subs; when I load a franchise, the date for each save reads 1/1/20 and not the actual date/time it was saved. There are frame rate drops, especially when kicking and pulling back to look at superstars/play art, etc. Overall, this mode is as shallow as a drop of water.
I give a 3, which is generous, as to me it's garbage--not bottom of the trash soaked in mystery liquids trash, it's more like a fresh piece on top of the pile. EA should be embarrassed and ashamed, I hope the devs are, but the executives who call the shots don't seem to care. The NFL sure doesn't; I get the exclusive rights but this product is garbage.

For NFL diehards, there remains hundreds of gaming hours at your disposal in Madden 21. These same diehards – much like players of EA’s NHL and Sony’s The Show – will be left with the impression they’ve played this game before, however.
