Pretty but a little repetitive. Souls and Nioh player, so the redundancy of the stances might not have hit other players as much as me.
But you can get through the whole game on Hard with Water stance, easily. Duals are amazing though, I would love a spin-off that is only duals

Fantastic game from start to finish. Rich in story telling and environmental design the game is almost without flaw that will leave you stunned many a time through it's lengthy campaign.

The story is a fresh tale that has many organic story telling elements that derive from Japanese legend. It is carefully weaved and sewn into the game with such finesse that even minor side missions will leave an impact on you. Upgrade system is well structured and is fitting when you max out your abilities, you earn the title of the Ghost. Voice acting is also superb, every emotional syllable is delivered with such raw emotion and tone that it's easily one of the standouts of the game. The side objectives and collectibles are done with such care, it didn't feel like the usual chore such as other monotonous games decide to include to pad the game time. SuckerPunch was the Developer that kept giving by providing a free Co-Op Multiplayer mode that required skill, communication and patience but resulted in much fun with a well executed game modes and concepts. The New Game+ feature that was also added was just the cherry on top.

The rare minor criticisms that I have of the game is that the text or other HUD icons would duplicate shadows around the vicinity of it's origin when sprinting making the gorgeous scenery somewhat tainted. Also, despite me praising the collectibles earlier I will note that there is too many and treads alone the line of becoming overwhelming. On the plus side not all collectibles need to be found in order to receive the coveted Platinum Trophy. The Hook mechanic seems to be very finicky and seems to be responsive only 3/4 of the time resulting in missed jumps to death. Also objectives in Legends are transparently convey, I had to resort multiple walkthrough to understand how to progress further in the chapters.

Overall, fantastic game with minor setbacks. One of the freshest single player open world games I've played in years.

This is a fantastic game that I thoroughly enjoyed playing. The world is vast and yet doesn't feel empty, perhaps helped by the stunning aesthetic created. At first glance the focus of the story seems a little repetitive but in practice the story adds variety and a good amount of varied strands (though the prologue and Act 1 aren't the best - the story really gets going in Act 2). A key element that really need applause is the combat. This is no button mashing game, and the combat is intelligent and requires thought, especially as you progress through the game and unlock abilities and other elements. My only gripe (and it is small and in no way takes away from a fantastic game) is that some of the additional tasks in the game (finding pillars etc) sometimes felt like a tick box exercise but again that is so minor. As someone who felt utterly punished by Sekiro (I had to sell it after a few hours play), this game delivers everything I wanted from a historical RPG in that world. Expand

Moving on to the actual game. I'll start with combat. It starts off pretty great as you learn and get used to the basic controls and to me is so cool. You genuinely feel finesse and satisfaction as you fight battle enemies breaking there gued and then as you finish them you will have an almost set animation where he trips the enemy up after stabbing them, oh slices there chest as you stay in the pose just to make it more baddass . You fight many enemies at a time at points and there is lots of variety. As you progress through the story or explore the world you will comes across different types of enemies who can make you want to take a different approach in killing them. You could shoot at range with a bow, fight head first or stealth kill them. When fighting multiple people you can very seamlessly switch between opponets to parey ther attacks as they attack you at once, parrying leaves the enemy open for a combo and if you get attacked mid combo you can parry the other opponent where you can either continue your combo agaisnt them or finish the original opponent Expand

To put it frank - this game is GORGEOUS, riding your horse throughout the countryside is a treat all in itself, it's just gorgeous I can't reiterate that enough. I've never seen anything like it. In terms of open world, the formula stays the same as many others in the genre (think Days Gone vs RDR2).

The story is relatively straight forward. Drive the Mongols out. The side quests are more exciting and mysterious then the main story line. Jin Sakai is a pretty cool main character, but I found myself wanting more substance from him.

    CONS:
    - not enough unique equipment or armor options
    - main quest was very black and white. Kill bad guy, save land. I mean... okay all games are technically like that, but they fluff it up. GOT does not fluff it up.

The story is nothing to write home about as it is very predictable except for the stunning ending. The world suffers from a general Ubisoft type bloat with far too many types of the same activities that ruin many nice ideas such as Inari shrines. I also felt the compelling theme of being a samurai or a ghost to fall short badly. This is due to the fact that the story railroads you in this dynamic and it feels painfully on rails.

The world is vast and expansive with some of the most gorgeous graphics and stunning set pieces/art direction that I have had the pleasure of experiencing in a game for quite some time. The game runs incredibly well on PS4 Pro (offering both "graphics" and "performance" modes), with a file size of about 45 GB, which is relatively small for a game with such a large map (for reference its file size is smaller than other popular AAA titles such as God of War, Uncharted 4, Marvel's Spider-Man, Red Dead Redemption 2, ect.) and the load times are remarkably fast. There is clearly a lot of love and effort put fourth here by Sucker Punch (developing studio) which is highlighted even more by the release of the free "Legends" multiplayer update months after the games initial release and the respectful and informed depiction of Japanese folklore infused in the games narrative.

All of that being said, the game is not without its faults in its gameplay and story-structure. While I found myself to be incredibly engaged during the 1st (well-paced) and 3rd (markedly short) acts of the main story line, I found the main section that makes up the game during the long-winded 2nd act to be a bit of a slog. Many of the games mechanics are derivative of other games that have come before it (common comparisons include Assasins Creed, Zelda BOTW, ect.) There is not a lot new or ground-breaking here, except for a really cool "follow the wind" mechanic that is vastly superior to the typical "way points" present in most games. In a sense, the game serves more as a "love-letter" to the open world genre rather than a completely new and unique title which I think is ok, not every game needs to be innovative or groundbreaking to still be special.

That said, some of the side-quests feel as though they are a bit unnecessary and serve to pad out the sheer amount of content in the game rather than aid in its narrative. There is also a very repetitive nature to the gameplay which may serve to turn off and dissuade some players. The good news is that for most, the gameplay should be fun and engaging enough to be able to overlook that all the same.

Having platinumed the game, I can say this repetitive nature is particularly true of its random enemy encounters, haiku locations, fox shrines (being the worst of the bunch, probably could have cut the total number in half, made charms more unique to playstyle to add variability, and a missed opportunity for more challenging and engaging puzzles) and side-quest story lines.

The game introduces many of its collectible content mechanics (some affecting gameplay in the form of hot springs and bamboo strikes, and others affecting cosmetics) very early on and they never really change much but instead become more like busy work as the game goes on. Perhaps this was a "less is more" situation where they could have dispersed fewer of these areas throughout the map (and cut some of the more empty areas) and instead focus on making each interaction with one of these mechanics more cinematic and meaningful in some way be it cutscene, in-world animation (which is present during a few key moments) or some form of felt consequence for the player.

Without giving away any spoilers, there was one recurring mission type in particular that quickly grew old and was repeated several times throughout the game which involved conducting some light "detective work" around a village (using the triggers to zoom in on clues) and then following tracks out of the village to some location that drives the narrative of the side-mission forward towards one of only a few possible inconsequential and underwhelming resolutions. It should also be noted that I played on the hardest difficulty available prior to the release of 'lethal' mode and yet found many of the boss fights/duels to be repetitive, easy and underwhelming (but visually gorgeous all the same) whether I used ultimate moves, stance switches, ect.

In spite of its shortcomings though, I must say the narrative really does pay off nicely in the end which felt like a resolute and complete story and ironically left me wanting more in the way of a prequel or sequel, even after the story seemed to drag for a while in the middle (though again this has more to do with gameplay and less to do with its actual writing) and there are some truly emotional moments during the main story and main side quests as well. The voice cast and acting are also PHENOMENAL for pretty much every major and most minor characters as well. The dialogue and interpersonal relationships between characters is realistic and grounded, and the game's world never fails to feel lived-in and believable.

All in all, Ghost of Tsushima is not flawless but is still absolutely a must buy for any PS4/PS5 player interested in an beautifully crafted open-world style game set in 13th century Japan!

For me GOT is a close tie with God of War for game of the decade.
Game play is satisfying and the fight mechanics have a steep enough learning curve with enough new fighting styles and moves being unlocked as you progress to keep you engaged throughout the storyline.
The game world is simply beautiful. There are a few rough edges but nothing that stands out as particularly bad. This is

The game world is simply beautiful. There are a few rough edges but nothing that stands out as particularly bad. This is the only game I have ever got a platinum trophy for. That is because the world is so gorgeous I didn't mind wandering around after endgame to tie up all the loose ends and grabbing all the cosmetics. The minimal UI is fantastic and allows the game world to shine without objective markers and such clogging up the screen.
Some critical reviews marked it down for lacking in originality but I don't care. A game doesn't have to be groundbreaking to be great. Yes GOT obviously draws a lot of inspiration from games that have come before such as Horizon and God of War but that isn't a bad thing.
The main questline, voice acting and writing were again fantastic. Every time I stopped playing I couldn't wait to get back in and progress the story to see what happened next.
One of my favorite games ever!

Everything is so polished and just FUN to play. No typical annoying grinding side quests. Most open world games have stupid annoying running errands type of side quests. Or, they have crappy combat system that is MEH. Yes, I'm talking about Witcher 3 or GTA V. Their shooting mechanics or sword fight is just MEH. Recently, The Last of Us Part 2 got GOTY award. I did not like TLOU 1.. Combat system was MEH, story was MEH, just not that exciting game. So I doubt that part 2 is all of sudden an amazing experience. Not to mention reviews from many youtubers i have seen as well. Still, it won GOTY. SOOOOO PISSED. SOOO MESSED UP. Reflects what real gamers think not journalist who are not gamers. Expand

With the exception of Persona 5 Royal, this has to be my favorite PS4 exclusive released this year. I managed to Platinum the game with a total playtime of 66.5 hours, with my only issue being certain collectibles being locked behind inaccessible areas due to the completion of the story. I think it's a great effort by Sucker Punch and the critic scores don't do the game any justice.

The world is so beautiful, the effects and lighting is wonderful. Maybe they really nailed the Kamakura Period on how it looks at that time. Damn I really missed my horse there "Sora". The music and harmony really fits on the events. Expand

You know when a game is gem when the side missions them selves dont feel repetitive and tedious....it damn near made me want to discover and see everything. so many different techniques and major upgrades for Jin and even the horse, from the armor and its color to the katanas, all the way down to the different abilities and samurai stances to master. get used to hearing the words "Samurai', Lord Sakai" Tsushima" and "Ghost" that would be my "complaint" of the game. Relationships end, new ones build, many sacrifices were taken, Jin Takes the samurai code and flips it on its head. theres a thin line between morals of a samurai and doing what NEEDS to be done as the ghost. the entire game was a kodak moment from start to finish. Всё это есть в игре призрак Цусимы , прощёл игру от начала и до конца получив 95% достижений , игра оставила кучу эмоций как от основного сюжета так и от некоторых дополнительных квестов. Сам главный сюжет не затянут и подан изумительно с глубоким смыслом, понравилось внутренняя борьба с самим собой у главного героя как он в начале игры презирал трусов и тех кто нападает со спины , потом как он меняется и постепенно сам становится одним из тех кого раньше презирал , одним словом если вы ищите необычную игру вам стоит попробовать Призрак Цусимы. the art direction is phenomenal. i see a lot of comparison to assassins creed which really is a shame as ubisoft has watered down open world adventures games so much that people cant appreciate an excellent game, because it shares some of the same tropes as ubisofts yearly franchise.

One day I told my mom's friend what ps4 game to buy me (cuz she wanted to get me a present) and i said the last of us 2 or dark souls. They didn't have any. In the last second, i remembered this samurai game and said "Ghost of tsushima idk". Popped it in when she came and couldn t leave for 2 hours until i had to go eat. Just, a masterpiece. Ghost of Tsushima is a flawed, but fun, game. While the gameplay itself was solid, and the story was decent, I definitely expected a lot more from Sony’s final PlayStation 4 exclusive. It had enough to keep me hooked, but lacked the polish we’ve all grown to love from a Sony first party game.

Ultimately, it feels like the game could have benefited from a smaller scope or a more linear structure. Focus on the duels could have created a more engrossing product, especially if it honed in on the narrative for a more concise and cinematic experience. But as it stands, Ghost of Tsushima is another AAA open world title and doesn’t seek to define itself as anything other than that.
