-For the gameplay part i hated the fact that they didn't have a lock on system for the enemies.
The stealth is so silly mostly because of the bad AI and the animation system on the enemies.
    -Very easy even on hard
-Bad lip sync especially on japanese, even on english.
-The wind is supposed to guide you but if you open the map you can still guide ur self with it.
    -Plot wise is meh
-The Cinematics remind me of Mafia 3, low budget, you know static cameras with ppl talking without interaction...

But i liked the atmosphere, the exploration, the soundtrack and the art direction

Finished the game a couple of hours ago, I’ve been thinking about it since then, and I really did not have a good time with it. The world is beautiful, no doubt about that...but everything else really didn’t do anything for me. I won’t go into story because...spoilers.

Used to trust user reviews more than critic reviews for games. But wtf happened here? This is a stale open-world game with solid graphics but a lame storyline, boring mechanics, and a lack of any originality. How is this the one of the highest scored games of all time for y'all? What a disappointment.

The game is not the worst (better than Tlou2) but I don't know whether it's worth the time playing, since this game is pretty long.

There are some good aspects such as duels and the last monolog is based but that's it.

This is not the end of a generation I imagined on ps4.
At first TLOU2 was very disappointing, and now the ghost did not live up to expectations, but still better than TLOU2.
The first thing I didn't like was the very drawn-out plot with a bunch of monotonous outposts "hello Yubisoft". And on the whole the plot is extremely strange if the main plot was shrunk a little and the map was shrunk to the size of the first act and everything would be much better “where does this bad desire to stretch the plot as much as possible? Or do you think the more hours you need to complete the better? "
The second is the graphics and I'm not talking about the landscapes, they are really very beautiful, but about the detail to take the traces, they appear extremely rarely, in particular, they are on some roofs of houses.

Visually this is one of the most gorgeous games out there, and the combat is really fun. When you beat a boss you really feel awesome. The gameplay, however, is extremely one-note.

I think this is because unlike other open world RPG's like Horizon, Skyrim, and even God of War, in Ghosts of Tsushima you fight the entire game with the same weapon. And the only "stats" you can progress are really just health, melee damage, and amount of damage taken by an enemy. And this is mostly based on which armor you're wearing. I didn't find much use for most of the different armor sets you unlock, since again--there isn't a lot of variety of stats for them to affect. And the gameplay is pretty basic, so it doesn't impact the gameplay all that much either. I upgraded the default armor all the way and used that a majority of the time.

The game has a few extra things to help you in battle, like wind chimes, firecrackers, bombs, etc. But you can only carry about 3 of each, so it's not really game changing to have them. I honestly didn't even use them much aside from the final boss fight because I was desperate to fight off the waves of enemies. I was making due just fine with the basic stealth kills since the enemies were spaced out a lot most of the time.

The missions are extremely monotonous. I never felt like I was doing a whole lot, despite the long cut scenes that you can't skip, of characters telling you how important these missions are to them. And the game itself wasn't very long. You can do the main story missions and finish it pretty quick.

Then finally, the main story is pretty basic and kinda stupid. Your uncle is mad that you're saving everybody just because it isn't the samurai way. It's annoying to hear him complain so much about it while you're out here saving lives.

A fairly underwhelming game. I hope the sequel has more of a variety of things so that it feels like you're actually progressing. Made me wanna play something better once it was over, TBH.

Ghost of tsushima is the most overrated game so far this year. For every thing sucker punch has gotten right with their new IP they've completely missed the mark on two others.

    Some examples:

    1) An incredibly complex and well crafted progressive combat system. The problem here is that the game is so painfully easy on even the hardest difficulty that there is almost no need for such a combat system making it a waste of effort on the developers part. The only times i died after the first couple of hours has always been due to the camera issues. Which brings me to the second problem with the combat...the absolutely horrible camera angles. All the enemy types and boss fights can be breezed through with absolutely no effort whatsoever, as long as the camera doesn't decide to screw you over. Indoor fighting? Out of the question. Coming close to any object in the world mid fight? Completely blocks the camera. You dodge an enemy and get behind him? Better hope you can turn the camera fast enough before he counter attacks. And the list goes on and on with the camera issues.

    2) The world is incredibly well crafted both graphically as well as exploration wise. The navigation mechanics are very original, unique and unlike any other game. So what's the issue here? Well if you want to make an aggressive build for you character you get all the best gear that you need in the first 3 hours of the game. Effectively making any exploration for better gear obsolete. This turns the exploration into nothing more than xp farming to get new skills unlocked. Which are all skills that make an already incredibly easy game even easier.

    3) The story is very well written when you look at the dialog and character development. The English voice acting isn't top of the line by any means but is more than adequate and far above the average for most games. But every step of the way when progressing through both the main storyline as well as the side quests, more and more plot holes are added. And worst of all, everything is extremely predictable down to the tiniest details. You will see everything coming from a mile away. Not just simply with the main plot twists, but even within each individual dialog between characters you can predict every single sentence that will be said before they actually say it.

Overall great potential that completely missed the mark

Just there to stagger enemies and leave them open. Most other attacks you unlock for stances are pretty much useless as they arent anymore viable than your basic moves. Other aspects of the gameplay include doing some pretty great side stories, some of which span the entirety of the game with many twists and turns. Although the endings to them can be hit or miss. This gane never really gets repetitive either. Theres alot of different collectibles to find and mongol territories to do. But since you can tackle then in any order its really your fault if it becomes repetitive. The story was well done with well written characters. Some archs i wouldve liked to see a bit more fleshed out. Overall, this game was good and I welcome a sequel if Sucker Punch chooses to return to Jin Sakai in the future. Expand

Decent graphics (but see God of War, Last of Us 2 for best results), gameplay fairly repetitive and not the best camera (no lock-on feature for enemies and messy close quarter situations). You will miss out on 50 percent of the story if you don’t play the side quests which I found out 2/3 through the main story. Also stealth in this game is too easy and kind of pointless as AI are dumb as bricks when compared to Last Of Us 2. Wish there was some unique environment interactions too. For the most part this is an amazing game with extremely fun gameplay and upgrades. However I feel there’s some glitches and fixes they could’ve made, maybe some more armor and unique gear, unique encounter, combat interactions. Pacing seems not well thought out and slow at some points, during nearly every quest you’ll find yourself walking 20 ft from a cutscene only to find yourself in another half ass cutscene. I wish they would just use the high level cut scenes and only when needed. There also isn’t any newgame plus which hurts the longevity I’ll play. I play this game solely for the combat and Japanese setting. And that wins me just enough but isn’t blowing me away. This game isn’t necessarily breaking any ground other then being the most beautiful Samurai/ninja game. Expand

Playing this after TLOU2 is a bit difficult. Seems it’s taken a more arcade slash path, rather than a deep and serious view into the genre. I’m surprised by the poor graphics, a lot of blurred and pixilated areas (playing on Pro). Animation is off in terms of spoken language. Had high hopes for this game, but so far not delivering.

What do you get when you mix a bit of Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, The Witcher 3, Horizon Zero Dawn, Nioh and Kingdom Come Deliverance? A game that tries to be all of these and falls short of any of them without solidifying its own identity.

The graphics in this game are unparalleled. Many games such as those listed above are close, but the Asian backdrops are truly a sight to behold.

Riding your horse through these scenes is an amazing experience that sets GoT aside from other games and the Japanese culture and time period give a very authentic feel. However, that's where the uniqueness of the game caps itself.

The story of GoT is as contrived and well-treaded as its gameplay. You're rescuing your uncle from the tyrant who levelled your homeland like in Kingdom Come Deliverance and then taking revenge upon said dictator. The story branches out quite extensively, however these fall under the typical open-world narratives that have been widely received and since criticised, so it's odd to see GoT widely praised for enacting the same mechanisms that have existed for over a generation now. I was sick of the contrived fetch quests by the time Act 2 came around.

The gameplay is where the game had an amazing first impression but an enervating lasting impression. The game tries to be too much at once; you can sneak and assassinate your way through a lair ala AC; you can explore a vivid environment of breath-taking scenery ala HZD, or you can hack-n-slash or strategically cut your way through foes ala Nioh or KCD. GoT actually reminds me of an older game called Way of The Samurai that fell to obscurity after the PS2 outings, as there was excellent combat mechanics held back by repetitiveness and unresponsiveness. It's like GoT wants to be an accessible Dark Souls but lacks the responsive controls. Eventually i just switched the difficulty down to easy because I wanted to get through the game faster. By the time Act 2 came around I had seem most of what the game had to offer and noticed some copy and pasting of enemies and bases.

The ultimate problem is that The Witcher 3 was released in 2015, HZD in 2017, and AC Odyssey in 2018. Ghost of Tsushima does not come across as being 5 years ahead of The Witcher 3. When I play it it feels more like a side-step rather than a step forward. It falls for the same old open-world tropes. I would much have preferred a linear 15-hour story than the repetitive potentially 100+ hour offering presented here.

The camera deserves a special mention, because no matter how dangerous your enemy, the camera is your biggest threat. They tried to circumvent this by having archers 'announce' their arrows but it's not as effective as I'd have liked.

The strangest thing is, GoT is actually a very good game, if you haven't played any of the games I've mentioned above. GoT drags itself down by repeating old concepts. Had I never played games like The Witcher or Skyrim, then GoT would be a ground-breaking GOTY. As it stands, beneath the Asian veneer it is just another iteration of an over-saturated formula that should have tried to enact a paradigm shift rather than chase old trends.

Now, I wouldn't mind these so much if the plot was engaging, but characters are mostly one-dimensional and the script is often lazy. Facial expressions during exchanges with NPCs can fall inside the uncanny valley sometimes, so cameras are placed far from the speakers to make up for this. To make matters worse, lip sync is completely broken for Japanese audio: it often looks like characters are being dubbed over. This completely destroys immersion and has a negative impact on the whole experience. I'm only saying this because visual representation for landscapes and buildings is often breathtaking, and it's such a shame that the same care didn't go to these other aspects. of the game. Gameplay wise, AI is pretty terrible, and even on maximum difficulty I run into hardly any trouble. There's also your standard array of mechanics: stealth kills, parries, unblockable moves, arrows, and such. This work fine, but they never reach the heights of games like Sekiro, where mastering them became essential for success.
So as it stands, Ghost of Tsushima is a by the book open world game, with forgettable characters and forgettable mechanics. Enjoyable, yes, but its formula grows really tiring really quickly. There's also the added value of a magnificent photo mode and the splendid Kurosawa filter, but that's about it.

    Combat:
The combat is good, not great. Its repetitive, the stances work to counter certain enemies but you really dont do anything truly different, its just that stuff that didn't work against certain enemies works depending your stance. Plus, if you enjoy playing aggressively on combat, this might not be the game for you. Its a game about blocking, dodging, parrying and counters. The Duels are fun and a welcome addition to a combat I consider pretty underwhelming since Sucker Punch always makes really fun games.

    Story:
The story is where I have the most issues. Its a predictable, generic, boring story. The characters and voice talent aren't on par with the Sony standard. Also, the story itself feels like Anime Fanfic. Or like whenever you watch non-Japanese anime (they always lack.. something..). It feels like they're trying too hard and the cliche's are everywhere. Its one of the most predictable games out there.

    Open World:
The open world activities and just moving on it is really fun and the best part of the game. Its fun to ride around on your horse and follow Musician tales to end up with the divine strike or the Nagao armor.

As a whole, the game is a good game, but its far from perfect or what Sony has as a standard. It also takes a lot from Assassins Creed and falls quite short from the last one (Odyssey).

I think most of that stuff will be fixed on the sequel, but for now, this is a 7/10 IMO

They combat and play style is unoriginal, repetitive and just plain boring. It's like a lidl sekiro. And the story is mediocre at best. Throughout the game it suffers heavy from fps drops, often looking sub 25. Its quite jarring and hard on the eyes.

I am an Asian and understand Japan, so I played the Japanese voice & subtitle version.

    Pros:
    - wonderful scenery and a powerful photo mode
    - cool katana "Waza" animation and clothing
    - main quest is interesting enough to make you engage in
    - vast open map with > 30 hours main storyline

    Cons
    - very repetitive and boring side quests (even the "companions' quests")
    - no skip button in the transition scenes
    - the companions are not interesting and some are voiced horrible
    - the main protagonist, Jin, his Japanese voice actor is too old, often not matching his face; Yuna and his little brother are also feeling odd when they are opening their mouths. The only good ones may be the Big Bad Mongolian, Jin's uncle and his childhood friend.

Overall, I think the creators are too obsessed with the old Japanese Samurai TV show/movies type and they always want you to appreciate their MASTERPIECE and efforts by deliberately not allowing you to skip their wonderfully crafted art works...

I will appreciate them more if they don't try so hard.

Gameplay wide though, they have copied a lot of mechanics from the AC series (the stealth mode bgm is constantly reminding me the one from AC games) but also introduces a more fluid action/skill system. Yet, it is disappointing they copied the bad things from AC, like stuffing tons of bloating boring side-quest at every concerns of the map.

But the katana battle feels satisfying and you can feel your character is powerful and fearsome after the mid game (perhaps OP sometimes).

The game designers should understand not every one is fond of the old school Jp Samurai show style. I play a game for fun and joy and couldn't care less about how they try to recreate the legendary Kurosawa's vision or style.

    One last important thing:
    - you must not believe the game will teach you a history lesson or Japanese culture correctly just like any AC games.

I don’t even know where to start. Movement is not snappy at all - just clunky, climbing and traversing is even worse. Jin will CONSTANTLY be tripping on tiny ledges that are barely raised a few inches above the ground in certain areas (seriously?). Menus look like traditional japanese mixed with sleek modernization that is way overdone.. it just looks corny and reminds me of AC which is so bland. No player agency in the beginning.. they hold your hand through everything. The huge world map is kinda barren.. there are SO FEW ITEMS to find in the world. Enemy variation is really weak. BOTW world is so much deeper — the comparisons are a joke. Combat camera is frustrating (unless you like being hit by things off screen). No lock on... really? Practically no control of the camera or controller settings/mappings. It’s just on rails.. you can do things at your pace and in whatever order you want but once you start a mission it’s just so linear. And the story is intriguing but executed in a very uninteresting way because the characters are just so uninteresting and generic. Nothing new, unique or original here aside for maaaybe the lack of on-screen map and ux stuff which I hate to break it to you... but minor things like that can’t save this game. But I guess in 2020 if you can make a game look rly beautiful then it’ll get rave reviews even if the gameplay is objectively mediocre? Sad. You’re given a horse immediately.. meaning exploration does not feel encouraged which is reinforced by how unrewarding it is because there’s very little variation in what you can find from exploring. Immersion is constantly broken by interruptions of something being on-rails. Lose a fight in the middle of a path? Don’t worry the enemies will literally be gone when you respawn. Infiltrating an enemy camp through the front door? Don’t worry - ever single enemy will conveniently have their backs turned to you at all times. I’m tired of writing but honestly this game is just a mess that I tried so hard to love and the beautiful environment is doing a wonderful job of making loads of people overlook its flaws that make it a game that I am not at all motivated to play... which is sad because I love just about any samurai/ninja/any japanese swordfighting game. ninja gaiden, sekiro, nioh, hell BOTW... they’re all original, have character and are just a better experience. if you want your hand held through a stunningly beautiful 40hr cinematic experience that’s a mechanical “meh” with unexciting characters.. this is the game for you lol. It's so small in some instances I think my TV's normal input lag is enough to make it impossible to react to, it must be predicted. The combat is fun and engaging, and I find myself preferring open combat to sneaking and assassination. The flow is good, and the constant scissor-paper-stone of stances and types of enemies keep things interesting.

However, a few things keep it from attaining true greatness on the level of something like Breath of the Wild.

The first and biggest problem is running. Jin and his horse very often seems to get caught on some invisible terrain and bring your sprint to a sudden half. This happens so often that sometimes you feel like you are stuck. This really distracts you and prevents you from immersing yourself into the game.

The 2nd major problem is the platforming aspects of the game. It is just terrible. Jin doesn't "sticky" to the correct places during the platforming segment, and often you just randomly jump off a cliff when you expect to make the jump. The developers could have learnt from many really good 3D platformers in the past. But they didn't.

The last minor niggle is the fact that the whole game feels iterative. It's not bad, but it doesn't really do anything revolutionary.

If the devs fix the running problem and platforming issues, I'd give this a 8. As it is, it shows a lack of polish that makes it undeserving of a higher score. I can't believe people overlook some of these fundamental aspects of making a game and gives this game such a high score

    - Wind navigation. Innovative but at the same time annoying that you have to continuously swipe the D-pad in order to see your goals and destination. Also, no distinction is made in height and depth
    - Collecting was never so easy without the animations but at the same time it didn't feel satisfying Because the collectables looked all the same
    - Deep combat which makes it worth playing but a world full of the same boring quests which made it unnecessary for me to explore the side quest and stories
    - A beautiful story that represents the honor and culture of the samurai very well, but at the same time there was a lack of cinematic creativity except for some of the main missions
    - The game very often skips animations or scenes where you expect it to be better polished

Now this seems all negative, but of course there is a lot more the game has to offer:

+ The world is the real star of this game.
+ Wind and particles ... everywhere.
    + Soundtrack is fantastic
+ User interface design is very nice
+ The feeling of the atmosphere and culture is great
+ Exciting stand-offs and the boss fights

All in all, it makes for a fun experience but not one that is unforgettable.

Alright, first impression was "wow, nice". The game has great graphics, the combat is at first glance awesome and has a very nice flow in it and it's actually very enjoyable because of that. The big plus-point of this game was the great open-world, detailed made and it's supposed to be immersive without any serious HUD.

But that's it. The game is REALLY REALLY BORING AF. Once you get through the hack-slash-parry flow combat, that's where the fun stops. The story is cliche, characters are totally uninteresting and the dialogues are terrible. I seriously don't care at all what happens next, it's all about go kill some guys, get a stupid boring dialogue, go kill more guys. That sums it up for the "open-world" as well. Besides some uninteresting collectibles, there's nothing else to do besides "go from A to B, kill people, boring cut scene".

Unless you are a hardcore samurai fanboy/girl, the game isn't that good. Don't pay the full price.

Sometimes I found myself looking at how the sun penetrates the misty air. The combat is quite fun with this intense Japanese battle music pushing you further. Some action sequences were so intense and vibrant I couldn't stop saying "wow". And the premise is pretty interesting, watching an honorable samurais' descent into dishonor. But all of this is drowned out by its severe repetitiveness. The story is predictable and unoriginal, the combat is so repetitive it gets so boring, the open world aspect of it is unnecessary and simple, the side quests are just the same thing repeated over and over, and the dialogue looks like two robots are talking to each other. There are more mistakes than this but I think these are the most important. Let me explain.
    1. The story
The story has a good premise but it does it in the most unoriginal way. They don't get you invested in most of the characters, for example Norio. I hated Norio, he just complained and complained, and the voice is the most annoying thing, and when I finished his emotional side quests I breathed a sigh of relief because I didn't want to be with him anymore.
    2. The Combat
This is one of the best parts of the game, there are some times when I was laughing it was so much fun, the music is pushing you forward to do these awesome combos. But it repeats. Again. And again. And again. The stealth gets so boring and the unstealth combat is just the same. They introduce new weapons and skills, but you use them a couple of times then it gets stale again. After 30 hours you wish it had more to add, but you only get one new weapon every time you max out your honor, then after 5 times of maxing out, you get nothing.
    3. Open World
This is the worst part of this game. It has no reason to be open world. There are only 9 types of discoverable locations in the giant island. There is no reason to exploring when there are only 9 things. Every time I think im going to find something cool its always a fox den, or a haiku. Another thing, usually in other open world games everything is interactive, you can do what you want to the npc's, you can find so many types of locations, so many different missions, different weapons that do different things. In this game is you explode a bomb in a crowd of people they will fall around and scream for a little and then go back to what they were doing like nothing happened. You only get 4 main weapons. 4. compare to wild hunt, gta v, red dead 2, where you have hundreds of weapons to choose from. The random encounters are boring and make exploring a pain. There are only a couple types of resources to collect while exploring while in other games like rdr2, you can collect anything and in the witches 3 with hundreds of ingredients. Everything is simplified to the simplest form which disappoints me.
    4. Side quests
the side quests are boring and uninspired, they are so similar and provide you with little reward for going out of your way to do them.
    5. Dialogue
This reminds me of horizon zero dawn where the dialogue was so stiff and robotic it made me want to kill myself. The main character, Jin, talks in one tone and doesn't really laugh or do anything a likable character does. In games like this its good to have a character that you can at least relate to in even the tiniest way, but Jin is a legend who has everything given to him and never smiles. I am being a bit aggressive and overreacting, but it is still a problem.

Those are the main problems but there are more. This isn't a bad game, it just isn't anything special. I still enjoyed my time playing and had so much fun in some parts, but there were many times where I had no fun at all.

This game is awesome and the combat at first is just so satisfying and cool, but after a few hours of playing it does get a bit repetitive. At some point I do recommend you start to embrace the ghost aspect and become stealthy because it adds more to the game. Clothing and armor is all useful for their own reasons so depending on your type of playstyle, you wont have to worry about having terrible armor. Though the outfits due have a few cool things you can wear and modifications to add to them, the clothing options seem lacking. There's not too much to wear if you were expecting fully detailed customization. Also for some reason things do seem to be downgraded a small bit. Maybe due to technical limitations or maybe them finding something new to go by when it came to the development. Graphics are not the greatest and certain scenes you can see it looks more like an earlier ps4 title. There are also issues with frame rate drops occasionally and xertain instances where characters will freeze in the middle of cutscenes for a split second.

Now the greatest part of the game is both the style of the world and Jin's storyline. You slowly push back the invading Mongols while trying to save and help the people of Tsushima. Side quests as well asspecial side missions make the game feel more open and fun. The game feels as though it borrows heavily from Assassin's Creed, but to a much lesser extent. You clear out forts and other mongole controlled territory and by doing so you clear more of the map allowing you to see more points of interest. However there is no hud so you must rely on exploration to find new ways to clear out the map and to upgrade Jin.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just finished this game and overall it was fairly good. The landscape was great looking but nothing groundbreaking. The story was an interesting period piece but the plot is stretched thin at times. For the aspects outside gameplay I would give this game an 8.5 . The gameplay itself became a grind like alot of these open world games. The controls were a little weird for me. The side missions start to get tedious. There was no need for the foxes, pillars and haikus. It was just boring busy work. Some of the main missions are more interesting than others. The mongol territories were very Far Cry style, although I did enjoy the bonus aspect added to each. The duels were frustratingly easy even on the hardest setting, especially after playing Sekiro recently. I give it a 6/10, same as I gave the last Far Cry. RDR2 was a little bit better even with all the grinding, and Horizon Zero Dawn was the last time i truly enjoyed a game like this. Expand

To be frank, there's a big variety of tools when it comes to combat, and the feeling of the Katana is excellent, smooth animations and many abilities to unlock, it's a very enjoyable experience despite the repetitive and shallow quest design, which is by far the biggest problem of the game.

As for the story, it's pretty simple, predictable and very forgettable, the pacing is all over the place and most characters are uninteresting, but there are some pretty great emotional scenes that are very well done.

In the end I was left a little bit disappointed, because honestly, I couldn't get attached to this game, but I really had fun playing it, that being said, it's a solid experience overall.

Because of the highly zoomed in camera and the atrocious FOV, enemies constantly move off camera and hit you blindly, and trying to keep them all on screen is very fiddly and frustrating. Stealth is the absolute bare minimum, there is no depth to it, and you are being chastised for using it even though it's a core part of mission design. The writing is serviceable, it moves things along, but it's never spectacular. Exploration rewards you with some collectables and nice vistas, but the world is empty. There are no environmental stories being told. You can't tell your friend "I was exploring the world in GoT yesterday, and I found those super cool things". There are no cool things, only supplies and iron and bamboo sticks. Overall, I certainly expected more from such a game in 2020. When its good elements are on display, Ghost of Tsushima is phenomenal, but it also seems to be somewhat stuck in the past. Expand

The best samurai game in a long time and a great fun for all, who love action. Love for Japan and its history is a big plus, but its knowledge is not necessary to enjoy every minute of this beautiful game. [Issue#305]

Ghost of Tsushima is a flawed, but fun, game. While the gameplay itself was solid, and the story was decent, I definitely expected a lot more from Sony’s final PlayStation 4 exclusive. It had enough to keep me hooked, but lacked the polish we’ve all grown to love from a Sony first party game.

Ultimately, it feels like the game could have benefited from a smaller scope or a more linear structure. Focus on the duels could have created a more engrossing product, especially if it honed in on the narrative for a more concise and cinematic experience. But as it stands, Ghost of Tsushima is another AAA open world title and doesn’t seek to define itself as anything other than that.
