A lot of repetition of meshes is used and many parts of the game just dealt stale. Graphically this game is very nice but the combat is very linear. Although this game is real-time, it certainly felt very boring and unskillful. Still, I have poured a lot of hours into this game and have been steamrolling since Chapter 3. All in all, this game is worth the purchase, (Bought for $12) and contains a lot of content. Expand

This game definitively has it flaws. The story starts slow and altogether you can feel the troublesome development of the game. The two reasons I really like this game are the lovely characters and the strong emotional moments. Play the DLCs. They are mandatory for character development.

While I have not played the Royal edition of XV despite it being objectively better, I don't want to spoil my masterful experience with XV a month after its release. The real-time combat that had you dashing everywhere was kinetic and engaging.
The world itself was gorgeous and when you first go to Altissia, the view is nothing less than sublime. The orchestral scores and piano pieces, as well as the fantastic cover of 'Stand by Me' by Florence + The Machine from Ben E. King's classic, was great too.
While the characters outside of Noctis and Ardyn could do with some fleshing out, the intriguing destiny the two shares helped me to overlook the weaker side characters. The story explores the prophecy of Noctis and while there are moments when it is incoherent, the simple grandeur of the tale made me love XV.

They say that your first Final Fantasy is always your best, and while I've still got more Final Fantasies to explore, I can confidently say that XV will always be a special one for me, as it was my definitive gaming experience.

Final Fantasy XV is a story of friendship, suffering with your friends, laughing with your friends, fighting with them, eating with them, going on adventures with them. It nails it. Tragic story has its own usual contrivances as with all Final Fantasy games and you came expecting it.

Talking all along the journey, thinking in strategies, showing their emotions as long as they help noctis growing up in his own journey of king. I listen to the soundtrack even today, and it's breathtaking. The graphics aren't the best, but good for the time that was launched. The map is huge and have so many side quests to do. One of the best Final Fantasy games in a long time, however the story is a mediocre rehash of previous final fantasy games (not naming which ones to avoid spoilers). The gameplay was also held back by some clumsiness in close quarters combat. I still recommend it for final fantasy and action RPG fans, it's a solid game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Final Fantasy XV is the best FF in recent years, and the most controversial. It's also a mish-mash of older projects, namely FF Versus 13 melded with new narratives that changes the game in a radical way. It starts of too slow, yet strangely you'll get used to the grinding, traveling, camping and dining that makes up its Open World. That changes after Mission 9, where the game became this super linear affair, reminiscent of the Uncharted series more than anything else. It changes tone again on Mission 13 to what is akin to an interpretation of survival horror (?). Before ending again in a glorious final boss(es), filled with screen filling effect and QTE galore. There's too many hands on deck for sure during its decade long production, and it shows...yet the quest of Noctis and co are so enganging at times, so beautifully presented that you'll want to stay for a very long time in this world. Don't let the 10 years of development hell scare you: this game is amazing! Although the narrative gets a bit weird and the camera might get bumpy in narrow spaces, the characters are charismatic enough to overcome this and so is the finely tuned gameplay. Final Fantasy XV is an amazing experience, one that kept me come back for more. It is worth every year of delay.

A flawed, but ultimately great, Final Fantasy.

I was originally going to score this a bit lower, but this has been a game that I've played more than any other that has released in the last year. Does it have some issues? Sure. Is it fun? Definitely. You can't please everyone so if you're expecting a more traditional Final Fantasy title, this probably isn't for you. But this was

I like the game because FF for me has always been about trying something new. Here we have a huge open world with lots of areas to explore, monsters and bosses to kill, side quest to complete, and things to collect. Seems to be an endless amount of things for the player to uncover and it's different and very fun.

Combat is engaging and while simple enough at first glance it shows it's true colors the further in you get with link strikes, blind side moves, abilitets from party members and different weapons.

The only thing that really stands out as bad in my opinion is the story as it's not very interesting or fun. To fully understand and appreciate what's going on you also have to watch the "Kingsglaive" movie which is stupid in and out of itself because it should have just been part of the game.

The game play is what matters most in a game for me though and it's incredibly fun.

The combat of this game is not that bad at all. Instead of the usual traditional button-mashing, you only need to hold a button to attack any enemies and the red-shield icon appears, you quickly hold another button to block and parry at the right time. I take some time to get use to it, but it's a real deal. However, the camera is somewhat annoying when you're in the middle of the battle, behind wall, branch, trees... Yep, this is your real enemy.

The environment is beautiful, I couldn't stop looking at it when the car drives itself or running around like feeling the breeze.

The music is outstandingly amazing, 'nuff said.

Like I said before, I played for a few hour and I still need to continue more gameplay until the end.

By concluding this review, the game is worth your time after 10 years of waiting. Yes, the camera has abit of a problem while in combat mode, but this rest is still standing out. If you're a type of people who is looking of a awesome improved combat than the turn-based strategy, than this game is you and for first timers.

Ok, enough second person talk. Let me be blunt here for second. Final Fantasy is still a great game--the vast open world and the surprisingly good (non turn-based) combat system are very well executed. Sadly, I cannot say the same for the story, which is dampened by plot holes, lack of expositions and missed opportunities. Speaking of missed opportunities, it can be traced back to poor characterization, which also adds to the story's plot holes and poor execution.

It's still a solid entry to the series, but its numerous failings in aspects where a Final Fantasy is expected to excel makes it a game that longs for greatness yet under-delivers.

That said, if you value open-world exploration and undertaking sidequests, by all means get this game. Just don't expect a masterfully crafted tale, because there's little to speak of in this game.

Concept: Create a hybridization of Final Fantasy elements both old and new without it feeling like a cheap adventure title with the name plastered on but not really holding onto elements dear to the series.

Graphics: The graphics are for the most part spectacular and the animations are impressive and detailed. Camera angles are odd at times especially when paused mid-combat, however the gameplay never suffers as a result.

Sound: The voice acting is superb and there is an available collection of classic melodies from Final Fantasies both old and new. Some of the Final Fantasy XV pieces themselves are less stellar than others, however the soundtrack is passable.

Playability: The locomotion in terms of vehicles is one of the worst elements of the game as it is such an integral part of gameplay at times. However, combat and overall control of the game handles well once you overcome a slight skill gap.

Entertainment: The world and players won’t lack for activities both main and side content related to dive into. While the experience takes a hit in its later narrative exploits and also in its ability to traverse the expansive world, the overall experience is an enjoyable and worthwhile one.

    Replay Value: High.

    Overall Score: 8.0

From the vastness of the open world, to the epic masterful soundtrack, everything in here feels Final Fantasy, and at the same time it doesn't. Combat took a heavy action oriented take, replacing the classic "per-turn" based gameplay for real time combat. Even though the controls and combat mechanics are FAR superior of those seen at both the Duscae and Platinum demos, it never reaches the overall supreme quality of other action oriented RPG's (Dark Souls series comes into mind), but neverthless its addictive, fast paced, visual and easy to understand, yet hard to master.

Storywise, this game does not reach the unsurmountable highs set by Final Fantasy VII or IX, but it's not bad at all, by any means, as a long timed Final Fantasy fan i would place this entry in the "good" storied main games. The Characters are lovely, Noctis' friends earn their place as one of the best parties on the series (yes, also the smallest), and by the end of the road, the little memories of photographs, fishing, hunting or driving arround next to Noctis' friends are the memories that remain, not the epic and amazing set pieces this game offers (And it offers quite a lot of epic moments, but it quite never reaches the incredible highs of other games on the genre, but bear in mind this is an RPG most of all).

You control Prince Noctis, in your road to marry his childhood friend Lunafreya. On the road, the empire overtakes Noctis' kingdom and its up to you to recclaim your throne, in order to do so, you must earn the power to take down the empire. Its a simple premise, with some twists at the end of the game, where the game suddenly changes its open world structore for a more heavily story-focussed linear path. That might overthrow some people, but in the end it turned out to be a very wise decision by the folks at Square-Enix, and after the credits roll, you may drive again on the open world, to tie up lose ends, so this design helped both the open world mechanic and the story, and it's a welcomed change to the RPG model.

The best moments of Final Fantasy XV are those heartwarming moments these four friends share, heavily reinforced by a beautiful soundtrack. At its very core, this is a story about friendship, not kings or gods, set on a fantastic world of imposible scale.

The amount of content is huge, saddly sometimes filled with tedious fetch-quests, although the party reactions along the way aliviates the tedium and adds a layer of humor, much welcomed after the bore-fest that were Final Fantasy XIII's story and characters.

At the end of the day, even though story wise is not the greatest final fantasy game, in terms of pure videogame mechanics is one of the best, and it paves the way for a bright future of the franchise. This is a Final Fantasy for all of us, fans or newcomers. If sharing heartwarming memories with friends, exploring caves, summoning powerful creatures, managing inventory, riding Chocobos and saving the world is not Final Fantasy, then i do not know what it is.

Final Fantasy XV probably it's not the best Final Fantasy ever made, but no other Final Fantasy (Or JRPG for that matter) is like Final Fantasy XV. This is a game that will stick with you, if given the opportinity

It's neither turn-based, nor full ARPG, something in between...
What turned out to be great was the fact that you are given a pause in the action which gives you an opportunity to use libra/scan to devise the best strategy and gifted the ability to switch out your party's gear and spells to suit the foes you're fighting.
In previous FF games, you'd have to lose the battle before being able to change anything.
Many people have criticised that all you do is hold circle throughout fights - these people haven't taken on any challenging foes yet - you certainly can't take on some of the later bosses without near constant blocking, waiting for the opportunity to attack.

The graphics are gorgeous and the story is good too.
The skills (fishing, photography, etc) are irrelevant but diverting if you want more out of your game.

The thing that let the game down is the main characters - they look like a K-Pop band and act in a mostly repugnant nature.
They in no way make you care about them.
Noct grows as a character towards the end of the game but not much and not convincingly.
The only main character I felt any warmth towards was Ignis (no pun intended).

It's only the fact that I bought the game digitally that I put in the effort to find a real gem of an ARPG but if I had bought the disc, I'm not sure I'd have put the effort in and would have traded it in quickly, with an altogether different opinion of the game.

But I do like the combat system very simple and intuitive but problems come when you need to block and the camera feels like showing you a bush rather than the threat coming in to rip off your crown jewels. But besides this very enjoyable only major complaints are side quests can get very repetitive and to the point of mind numbing and some loading screens taking ages also the frequency of them. But even after I got bored of the side quests half way through I enjoyed the main quest enjoyable and interesting enough to play to story end after story completion and about a third of side quests completed clocked up about 40 hours.

The good- I enjoyed the characters and a battle system where I don't just press auto to win
The bad- Whats killing me? Oh the giant bee I could not see as the camera has suddenly decided it's a peeping tom that wants to watch you from behind a hedge.
The ugly- The loading screens. Oh dam it wake up the game is starting. And those really short chapters like those books for stupid people "I read 5 chapters today" And they only read 5 pages

This game has some of the most addictive gameplay with a very deep and emotional story. If you're interested in the lore behind FFXV, make sure to watch Kingsglaive and/or Brotherhood to understand the lore otherwise it will be very disjointed.

The graphics? Some of the best I've seen, especially for console. The world looks absolutely stunning. I couldnt help but return to Galdin Quay and just take in the surroundings. Unfortunately there is a bit of sacrifice to FPS overall, but its usually a consistent 30fps depending on how much is going on.

The quests? Usually great, but there are some terribly boring side quests. (Dont get me started on that frog hunting quest.)
Most of the quests involve collecting things and earning Gil/items, but each tier will get harder to collect these things as you need to fight your way to them to make the quests interesting. There are also some relaxing moments where you can fish for ages and try to reel in the best fish possible.

The combat? When it works, it works amazing but when it doesn't it sucks. The only way it doesn't work is when you are between trees and other terrain which warps the camera to a point where you cant see anything. Aside from that, its incredible as like with other FF games, you have a plethora of weapons and get better ones along the way if you invest the time into the more difficult tasks. You also need to switch weapons depending on the enemy you are up against so you cant just yolo with one weapon through the entire game.

The story? I didn't think a game could make you feel every single emotion from start to end. This is of course if you dig the story.

The progression system? Not as good and in depth as FFX for example, but its still very rewarding and unique. Its divided into different categories from your overall team stats, to abilities you obtain. The AP grind isnt too bad either. After a while, you can unlock perks of getting AP throughout various exploration criteria and activities so obtaining AP will eventually flow naturally.

The characters? I love them. They all have their own personalities and the development of each character is fantastic. Its as if they are imitating real life situations and also reference things from todays culture which I really appreciated. Eventhough they can be cheesy at times, I couldn't help but laugh and relate to some of the things they said or did.

The end game? This is where it shines the most and where the countless hours kick in. Naturally throughout your first story playthrough, there would be so much you have missed and also things that unlock once you finish it. No spoilers here, but this game gets ridiculously hard and at the same time is riddled with excitement (putting aside those boring quests)

I can highly recommend this game. I'm sure there is a lot I have missed in this review but I think I have covered the main things. Eventhough the combat system is entirely different to the other titles, it works. Once again, the only things dropping it down to an 8 for me are the slow loading times, combat glitches, fps drops and the early game since it starts off a bit boring and you're adapting to a new play style, but give it a chance and push through!. The rest of the game is amazing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off let me just say that anyone who has given this title a score of 5 or worse, deserves to be flayed in a human sized cast iron skillet while being pissed on and while their closest sibling or pet watches, I'm kidding, but seriously. Final Fantasy XV may at times( but very rarely), seem cliche in dialogue and there may be somethings to nitpick; but at its heart it is a very warm and delightful fun loving game that should(in most people) fill every sense, vein, and emotion in your body with a sort of summerset like joy, as if you too were sitting alongside your best pals doing wacky **** things and just mostly trying to enjoy your time. The love is all there, in the NPC's, main characters, and especially the music, if there were to be one thing I would waterboard someone, then sew their lips for, it would be for giving a negative criticism for this games beautiful soundtrack. The soundtrack gives the game a lot of its life and charm; it fills each fight with a burning intensity, each cutscene with cinematic emotion, and is overall just a true to Final Fantasy's everlasting great sense of musical direction. The combat in this game is definitely a step up to not only the most recent of Final Fantasy titles but also(dare I say) most Final Fantasy titles. The game gives you two types of combat options, the first being the classic Final Fantasy turn based wait mode combat, the second is a more teamwork based action, hand to hand combat composed option, one that I'd say is a more riveting playstyle, the combat is a big factor in why I fell in love with this game, the only simple minded fool who would even say the combat is lackluster, or "press square to win" either A. Has not played it, B. Is lying, C. Grinded a crapload, or D. Didnt make it past chapter 3. Whatever it is, the combat is definitely fun, satisfying as hell, and not that simple. If you are to read any of these reviews here, please just dont read, or at the very least take anything here with a score of 5 or worse seriously, because I will tell you... It is all **** crafted by either whiny "the old final fantasy games were better" heathens, or just cranky babies who want to complain. Listen this game does have its problems alright, it is not perfect, the driving aspect can be a bit annoying, sometimes the loading times are sorta long, and sometimes the characters say someting kinda stupid, I wont be biased and I dont want to silence anyone's opinions here, or come off as some disgusting video game dictator, but I just want to save you from reading a **** waste of time review here from some person who knows nothing about the pros and cons of this game. I will address how this game stands up to the three generations of Final Fantasy games and how those who played them will view this game.

    1):The Silver Era: FF1-FFV (excluding FF4)
This era was all about grinding and optimizing characters to make dungeons go faster or more successfully. Plot was a nice but largely optional feature as the gameplay took center stage. The addiction of that RPG optimization where you'd find if some enemies were weak against stop, or slow, or fire, then master that dungeon's encounters and blast through it was what players sought. FF15 will not resemble a final fantasy at all to you. That ability to implement strategies or outsmart the encounters is totally gone and replaced with spells that function more like action game abilities than anything else. Fire, Ice and Thunder are the same spells, just with different enemies and places where they are useful. The other three spells are mostly useless. FF15 is an action game and you will find no connection to what you knew and loved. I survived not equipping a single weapon outside of the starting equipment and I beat the game. You love for this game will depend on whether you enjoy flashy, epic action games. Regardless, to you Final Fantasy will feel like it died with this game.

    2): The Golden Era (FF4, FF6-9)
This era of FF games is similar to the "silver era" in every way except in addition the plot, story telling mechanics and the characters are quite well developed in comparison. Final Fantasy stories became very grandiose and even weird in this era. This is an era where the turn based RPG elements are at their best and the plots and situations are have so many parts in them that you could not reproduce them in modern videogames. The cost and time it would take to make it modern would be unrealistic. For example, FF6 was a game with 14 character, all of which were mostly one dimensional, but unique and had their own stories, backgrounds and situations in the plot. FF4 takes you to the moon, under the earth, mideval castles, dungeons, caves, advanced spaceships and technologically advanced towers. People of this era will feel unfulfilled by the lack of content in FF15. The scenes and settings are not as numerous as you'd be used to. The characters are not as varied (while admittedly much deeper), and the items and skills you collect don't really mean much for the gameplay. While the plots were more simple in this era, they made sense and were not overly abstract. Fans of this era will enjoy FF15 more than FF12,13 and "maybe" 10, as the plot is fairly simple and very weird! FF15 took huge risks with the story and characters and ended up returning, in some way, to the adventurous and unique story telling of this era. The gameplay of FF15 is mostly simple action mechanics, which will suck for you. You are playing this game to finish the quests and see the story, not to develop your characters. However you will feel that final fantasy familiarity with the plot and situations. This game feels like a Final Fantasy. To you, Final Fantasy is not dead yet, but it will never really be the same again.

    3): Modern Era (FF10, 12, 13)
This era was all about movie like story telling, with high resolution situations, emotions, acting, characters and just plain details. These were basically a movie 5 times as long as what you'd find in a theatre, with a game attached to them. The gameplay in this era spanned from very traditional (FF10), to simplified (FF12) to even more simplified (FF13). With the exception of 10, the gameplay was dumbed down to carry the story. Fans of this era will be used to highly abstract and overly complicated stories that sometimes make no sense. You will feel at home with the simplified gameplay of FF15, and will appreciate the modern gameplay elements like collecting quests, items, having dialogue options, etc. However you will find this a very weird game and might be put off by it. The plot takes a lot of risks you wouldn't be used to if you didn't play FF4-FF9. You will also not appreciate the setting or the art as much as this game really tries to keep the world mundane. To you Final Fantasy is pretty and artful, and this game is pretty more in graphics and less than what those graphics are trying to represent visually. I think you will be put a bit off with the plot.

I would have given this game an 7 for how it impressed me (the graphics, feeling, music, fight scenes, etc). However, I give it an 8 because I really like how they took risks that high budget, modern games would never be allowed to take. I identify with the silver and golden era more, so I appreciate the weird and simple plot. This game has a survival horror part to it, defeat, depressing and dark themes as well as decent stealth scenes. It is not a bad game at all, but I feel it fails to be a masterpiece. To me, this is an action game that takes place in the world of FF, with Witcher 3 gameplay sort of emulated in.

FFXV's core cast are fantastic and I really came to enjoy their company. Small details like Prompto's pictures, or quips from Gladio about taking off your jacket do a lot to get you invested. A similar care was taken with the world, and I was honestly astounded by some of the tiny details you can find. The plot seemed genuine and heartfelt, and some of the cutscenes and bosses are downright breathtaking. Combat has a surprising depth to it. When you start doing well you really feel incredibly powerful while zipping across the battlefield.

That said, there are some hang-ups. The most noticeable are the load times. (and I hope the game comes to PC just for this alone) They are horrendous, and they make fast-travel into a huge hassle. I also have issues with magic which is incredibly powerful, but generally unusable due to friendly fire. I may need it for optional bosses I haven't tackled yet, but mostly I just regretted wasting AP on the skill tree. FFXV also has some of the most groan-inducing and obvious product placement I have ever seen. I can handle the prominently Coleman camping gear, Lady Yunafreya's wedding gown being made by (and credited to) an actual designer? Okay, I guess. But a quest about Cup Noodle, filled with praise? That knocked me right out of the game. Additionally, the second half of the game feels rushed. I like the idea of the game becoming more linear and speeding up as it approaches the climax, but the game honestly feels like it could have been 10 hours longer, both in terms of plot and location. There are also a couple sections that play at stealth or horror... they are not good. Finally, there is the car which, while a nice idea, was so restricting and time-consuming that I would often go make food or even read a couple pages out of a book while riding.

Overall though, FFXV really sold me on both its world and its characters, and I thoroughly enjoyed the combat. Looking back after beating it, I remember the strong emotional moments, Prompto's picture album and some exciting fights, not the mediocre car rides or forced survival horror sections.

    STORY:

If you haven't watched kingsglave or brotherhood then the story might make little sense to you. A lot of the problem with the story is that its so heavily linked to other parts of the XV franchise. It is actually a good story not a great story but one that was most memorable and enjoyable. My suggestion to you before playing the game is to go watch Kingsglaive and brotherhood to give yourself a bit of backbone to piece things together in the game. Besides the ramble the characters at first glance may not seem to be what you would class as awesome characters just by looks but when you get into the game you feel like your one of the buddies and somethings can hit you right in the chest.

    GAMEPLAY:

Gameplay, for the most part is extremely different from the traditional ATB or TBS style gameplay combat system reminds me a little of DMC with its own twist. be wary though as there are still bugs within the combat gameplay sometimes when you hold for parry it might not actually parry and just dodge you instead which can be annoying for later bosses that require you to parry to advance. Sometimes your warp strikes will also send you across the map but I guess the bugs give it a little character? There is also the issue of frame rate sometimes in battle it can drop down to about 10 frames if its chaotic.

    EXPLORATION:

if you are a fan of open world this game maybe for you. Mind you I did find that some of the areas became bland and boring the more I moved around and had to go back to that same area for side quests. It feels like a general MMO with a vast world you can get into.

    DESIGN/GRAPHICS:

Fantasy based on reality was the term used to market this game. Graphics can look a tad outdated, harsh edges and problems with physics trick the mind to going into uncanny valley. Hair in this game looks pretty low poly and sharp. It would have been nice to see some better texture on the environment as well. Overall design is okay but graphics could have been updated and optimised.

    OVERALL:

Final Fantasy XV is a good game. It is hard to tell you whether or not you should pick up the game. Honestly its really your own choice. It plays pretty well to story and exploration for the most part. If you like fast paced action then you should enjoy this game.

    PROS:
    - pretty good story
    - memorable characters
    - alright soundtrack
    - combat system is somewhat unique
    - The regalia is customisable
    CONS:
    - buggy framerate in battles
    - outdated textures
    - bug haven
    - story hard to follow if not done prerequisites

    TIPS BEFORE YOU PLAY
    - Watch Final Fantasy XV 101 from the official youtube page
    - Watch Final Fantasy XV Kingsglave
    - Watch Final Fantasy XV: Brotherhood

Interesting characters. The main party work well together (if a little hokey at times) but very entertaining and pretty much carry the story. The over all plot is a bit rushed and lacking context around characters if you haven't seen the supplemental material. I'm a believer that the game should be enough to tell the story. The pacing is decent, but not awful. Also, treating the adventure like a modern day road trip was a very nice touch. That's exactly what it feels like. The only down fall is that the day and night cycle can be a burden when you're lower levels, but once you get past that, things become more fluid.

    Graphics: 10.
Clearly a lot of effort was put into this part, and it shows. Everything from characters to scenery is meticulous and beautiful. Just running around is a reward in itself and makes exploration worth the effort.

    Combat: 8.
A lot of work was put here as well. It's fluid and spectacular, but the execution falls short of the consistency needed to really stand out. Evasion and blocking need further refining as you'll find yourself hitting the buttons with more than enough time to spare and getting no reaction from Noctis, and, even so, evading should be more responsive in a game trying to go action based, especially with the cameral so close to Noctis during combat. Many an enemy will take you in the back from off screen, and a hit in the back does massive damage. Also the leveling seems off. You'll find yourself using tons of potions agains enemies at the same level or even lower. The combat is equal parts amazing and equal parts frustrating. I do think Square is on to something with this model though.

    Music:
9 The only reason it doesn't get a 10 is because some of the battle music, while epic, doesn't elicit the kind of urgency or epic-ness of past FFs. Still amazing and appropriate work though. (Music from the past FFs do not count.

Over all the game is worth the buy if you're an FF fan. If you're not, then you might want to wait as the combat is not as responsive or "fair" as it should be. Basically victory depends on either having sufficient stocks or being 20 lvls higher than your enemy and THEN the game might let you live. (Exaggerating, but there's a particle of truth.)

Nice to see an open world return and a very pretty world as well that you want to explore coupled with some likeable main characters and sub characters, combat though is a bit simplistic quite often you just need to spam the O button.

Driving to and from quests gets a bit tedious and fast travel was getting plenty of use after a while another annoying point is the AI controls of your party members while travelling around the world they would frequently get in your way, also had a couple of occasions during mid battle it would suddenly become impossible to hit or get hit by an enemy on one occasion this happened during a boss fight which was very annoying.

Overall i give Final Fantasy XV 7.8/10 rounding up to an 8 overall it has flaws and even after 10 years it feels a little rushed but there are plenty of things to like about this game.

This is unfortunately the truth with Final Fantasy XV, but at the same time it isn't a complete catastrophe of a game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. HONEST, UNBIASED REVIEW FROM A LONG TIME FAN! I ADDRESS EVERYTHING FROM GAMEPLAY, PACING, COMPARISONS TO PREVIOUS TITLES AND A CRITIQUE ON THE FABULA NOVA SERIES. PLEASE READ! VERY SLIGHT SPOILERS, NOTHING MAJOR.

I will start with some general gripes about the Fabula Nova Cyrstallis nonsense as I feel that the issues with it are symptomatiic of the general problems with recent FF games.

We were led to believe that the game would have more realistic characters with real emotions and all that other good stuff. Now, I can't say that I care much about that stuff since this is, after all, a video game but I do like it when people deliver on promises.

What we have instead are complete character archetypes:

Noctis is your typical "must save the world" character who is virtually indistinguishable from Cloud and Squall in his demeanor. He is a pouty **** throughout the game. There is a sense of undecisiveness to him. Now, that's not necessarily bad but it isnt anything new in FF games with weak heroes.

Gladio is the loyal knight/defender character. Think Basch or Steiner but far less interesting a lot cornier.

Prompto is the comedic relief goofy character. Think Locke, Zidane, Tidus, Wakka but inferior to all of them by a vast margin.

Ignis is the overly serious thinker of the group. Every RPG has one of these. He is unoriginal in every way imaginable. He's a poor man's Balthier but probably the best of the four party characters.

We were told there would be more realistic stories yet the story of FFXV is basically a simple one of "save the princes and then the world from the evil empire" completely indistinguishable from the first half of FFIX, the first half of FFVI etc.

    NOW TO THE GAME!

The gameplay is very very simple but very very fun and addictive. It essentially is hold O until everything dies or hold SQUARE so you can defend. With the occasional press of the TRIANGLE button to warp strike someone. Magic is very unnecessary and a complete afterthought. I am probably 70 percent done with the game and have used three spells the entire game. I also have yet to die once, something that has never happened in an FF game this far into it (Characters around level 36 with minimal sidequesting).

The game does a GREAT job of showcasing Noctis' power to essentially summon weapons for use. Holding O allows Noctis to attack continuously and pressing the directional buttons allows for quick weapon switches mid combo. This is the first game ive played where this feels natural. Even in Devil May Cry or God Of War it feels silly.

The driving is stupid and the load times if you fast travel are considerable. The game is open world but there are very few cities to screw around in. Mostly, you will spend the game sleeping in caravans and campsites.

The sidequests: Virtually every sidequest is a fetch quest or a hunt which works like a fetch quest. It is go from point A to point B, possibly kill something, get an item and come back to point A. The sidequests are uninteresting and the rewards are small. You can get money by selling your loot.

Difficulty of the game: This is the easiest RPG I have ever played. As mentioned before, I have not died once. It is virtually impossible to die. If you lose your entire HP, the character is wounded and loses max HP slowly. Once the max HP goes to zero, one more blow will kill the character. HOWEVER, your allies can bring you out of this state an infinite amount of times. Furthermore, even if they dont and you "die" you can Phoenix Down yourself back into the battle. Presumably this can be done as many times as there are phoenix downs in your inventory. When a battle seems tough, you are often saved by the abililty to summon an Esper (often it is Ramuh) that comes and kills every enemy.

I am quite into the game and the story has not developed more than "We must save the princess and our land." Literally nothing of value has happened. More happened in the first one hour of FFIX than has happened this entire game.

The expectations for a game in 8-10 years of development are very very high and this game falls short of most things. It is clear that this was meant to be a spinoff of FFXIII as it lacks the umph of a numbered FF game except for the even worse FFXIII.

I still give this game a solid 8/10 because of its addictive nature, fluid combat, decent and manipulable pacing in rest points, intuitive controls, scale, and originality compared to other FF games (which is something that cannot be understated considering all that FF has done the past main non-online games). Gameplay and pacing to me are the most important things in a game and this has GREAT gameplay and good pacing. I know that for many the story is what draws people in to FFXV. The story is one of the weakest in FF and one of the weakest in JRPGS. Still worth a buy if for nothing than to add to your collection.

You are set in a gigantic open world (I would argue that it is almost as big as The Witcher 3) with 3 bros' and a really nice car. From what I understand FF was always turn based combat whereas 15 is not. I'm not going to say the combat is perfect but it is almost there. The camera can get real frustrating, and if you play I would suggest using the far camera setting when out in the open and middles when indoors, and turning wait mode on. Wait mode pretty much pauses the game when Noctis (your character) stops moving. It gives you more opportunity to plan and execute more. Those things together make combat a lot more fun imo.. This might sound stupid but the combat feels a lot like the Arkham games. Where you are holding down circle to attack and sometimes hitting square when prompted to block (on ps4 anyway). It just isn't quite as polished as the arkham games but it works just fine. Being a newcomer to the series I know **** about what is actually going on in the story so I would assume if you haven't played any, or at least in a while you wont either. But that is ok. The gameplay was enough to keep me hooked. I really like the friends you travel with. Ignus, Gladiolus, and Prompto are your travel companions through most of the game and I gotta say it was a lot of fun having them around. The banter was sometimes actually funny and it was cool seeing them bonding. It gave me a family vibe that was really interesting and fun to witness. I am not super sure what long time fans think but I am having a blast playing and I can't wait to start a new game. I really think those of you that are like me and haven't played any FF or at least haven't played FF in a long time, I highly suggest you try it even if you don't like JRPGs but love western rpgs. Despite it's camera flaws and tedious side quests, Final Fantasy is back. It's best asset is the majestic and vast world which is filled with very detailed creatures, a lot of them familiar.

The story is vague and it's players poorly used, except for the four. Their story is about brotherhood.

    - Story: The story itsef is interesting but unfortunately bad developed, the game assumes that you have already seen the movie Kingsglaive and the anime Brotherhood, if you have not, you won´t understand part of the inicial moments and the link with the main characters wil be poor.
The first half of the story is quite slow and focuses on finding the Royal arms and the Astrals to make Noctis stronger, the second is linear and focuses on recovering the cristal, being the last chapter IMO the best interting of all and the ending quite impresive and spectacular.

-Characters: 4 main characters. Noctis, Gladiolus, Ignis and Prompto, being Noctis the prince of Lucis and the key character.
The rest of the caracters, even the important ones with the exception of Ardyn, are badly developed. Luna has no enough strenght and her story in poor, as well as most of the Niflheim.

    - Combat: easy, fun and very visual. The tag actions give meaning to having a group of friends.

    - Weaponry: a wide variety but not excesive. Unfortunately having only 4 weapons active on the battles limits the flowing on using all your warfare, the Royal Arms are unuseful on combat, except Arminger, and the camera can be improved.

    - Openworld: Beauty but empty, the side quest are repetitive and only gives supplies and XP, huntings are right but only a source for earning money.

    - Enemies: great designed, good variety, the big ones are really impresive.

    - Soundtrack: Magnificent soundtrack by Yoko Shimomura, one of the greatest.

    - Endgame: A bit repetitive, high level enemies are good but the reward are only better items. The dungeons are all similar and take a long time to complete, the rewards a good but not excellent.

(Waiting Mode).

I have played the original Final Fantasy 1 on NES. And this game series has evolved greatly over the last 30yrs in my life. This game is absolutely wonderful and disregard anyone who says otherwise. I have played over 5hrs+ into it and its awesome! Love the MUSIC - Standby Me, and menu option and screens and etc. The game-play is wonderful, the world is beautiful and the characters grow.

Some of the pit-falls or challenges I have with this is game is the frame rate issue.. For action sequence games they need 60 frames per sec or it looks slow to me. Also the lack of story in the first 3 chapters is not well thought out and could have made it better. But the open vast world and hunting challenges is fun! I am not a big fan of the spell craft since it looks rushed. I am not a big fan of the equipment, item customization but ok with it. But here is how I broke it down.

    Story - 7.5
    Graphics - 9
    Gameplay - 8
    Sound - 8.5

    Pros:
+ Amazing soundtrack, with tons of previous FF music available as you progress, with the mp3 key item you can listen to music from previous Final Fantasy games while you run around the over world. Thematically, it is incredible.

+ Gorgeous visuals, I played on lite mode on a PS4 Pro and it looks really good with mostly decent fps. It stutters a bit but it's not going to hurt the experience that much. I usually game at 60fps on my pc and didn't have much of an issue.

+ Fun albeit somewhat boring at times combat. It's action packed and not like FF13 which I like, but it does sort of boil down to holding down O or Square while pushing a direction on the Left stick. I never got too bored of it, but by 40 hours in, I was hoping for a bit more variety.

+ Fun overworld with plenty to do. The sidequests are good, not great much of the time, and compared to the Witcher 3, leave a bit to be desired. However the rewards and variety are enough to keep it fun for quite some time.

+ The relationship between the four protagonists. At first, I felt a bit luke warm toward the characters, but as the story went on, it was awesome seeing them all interact. It feels like you're along on the journey with them, and while the story telling isn't always perfect, the relationship between the four is mostly enjoyable and fun.

    Cons

+ The story isn't terrible, in fact I enjoyed it quite a bit more of the time than not, but there are some missing pieces that make following it difficult. I love Final Fantasy games, so esoteric, difficult to understand stories are something I don't mind, but without watching outside content or reading up on the lore outside of the game is required for a fuller understanding, and that's a shame because while I may be willing to do a bit of that, most people would prefer that to be all "in house" and I can't blame them.

+ Glitches. They're not super frequent but they appear every now and then, and sometimes require you to save and reload to fix them. For a game of this size and scope, they're forgivable but they do exist.

Final Thoughts: I think this is a solid game if you have, or haven't played a final fantasy game. At the time of writing this, the developers claim to be releasing some free dlc as well as paid, and the free dlc is supposed to address some of the story telling issues, though it may be too little too late for those of us who have already purchased it and played through it. If you like rpgs, and the FF series, I would say this game is absolutely worth the full price of $60 if you can't find a sale, especially if the free dlc does even just a little bit more in terms of making the game better.

Checkpoints are sometimes really far far i away, so it can happen you beat 2 sub bosses, you die after that and you start over. I found it preety annoying since this is not a soulsborne like game. But dont get me wrong, it happened 3,4 times during my playtrough. All in all, Noctis is a great character, and it was a good experience... Expand

Is not that I dislike real time battle systems, and I think this one in particular is a pretty good one, but fora a FF game I prefer turn-based a hundred times, because it is a signature element which makes the franchise so magical.

The open world I also think it was something pretty unnecessary for this game and many of the sidequests were too repetitive, with unfunny storylines and characters. The rest of the elements were mostly brilliant, from the graphics to the music, going through a story which, although a bit clumsily told, was still very emotional.

Overall a very good game, and a good attempt from Square to bring new life to the saga, still nowhere near the FF masterpieces of the playstation one.

Final fantasy XV is the beginning of a new era for final fantasy franchise. With FF XV I believe SquareEnix has found its form of seamless exploration and combat that is both fluid and engaging. The beautiful open world and combat designed in XV will hopefully be an excellent foundation for the new FF era.

The massive gameplay overhaul in FF XV however meant that the designers had to experiment with new systems and ways that sometimes make the players ask why didn't they come up with a better way. For example the much critiqued magic and summon system. In addition the time and budget constraint along with the need to design the game from the ground up meant that the developers had limited time to develop other aspects of the game which is apparent in the story and repetitive MMO-like sidequests.

The core of any good JRPG is the story. Unfortunately FF XV stumbles at telling a clear, well paced story to the players. In the beginning they started off with Kingsglaive event that brought a sense of urgency. However after the introduction the writers seemed reluctant on disclosing any more information on the story such that the motives of main characters and the villains seemed thin, confusing and meaningless for the next tens of hours.

Another design consideration that slightly annoys me is the host club/boyband-like character design for the four main guys. It just begs the question of WHY? when the rest of the cast (Luna, Izunia, Aranea, etc) have excellent and unique character design.

Ultimately Final fantasy XV is a fun and refreshing game. For every bad decision made by the designers there were two good decisions. Hopefully with the concept already laid down SquareEnix can build and polish the next final fantasy franchise to the next level.

Despite several issues due to it's very complicated development, I can only recommend playing FFXV. Mostly for its characters development and a little bit for its story (do the DLCs after you finish the game and watch short Ardyn movie, it brings a lot to the lore).

Being the fifteenth main entry in a long running franchise is an impressive milestone however that does mean that it holds a lot of pressure. Does Final Fantasy XV
live up to hype and do it's predecessors proud?
Amazingly yes. I'm not saying that I had much doubt with all main entries hitting the mark with almost everyone that played them but with that being the new style of gameplay,

live up to hype and do it's predecessors proud?
Amazingly yes. I'm not saying that I had much doubt with all main entries hitting the mark with almost everyone that played them but with that being the new style of
gameplay, using Kingdom Hearts as an example, was a little worrying especially with some early demos making the game seem a little simplistic. I can now confirm that
my worries have been vanquished as this game really did hit a cord with me. Taking the action approach was a brave choice as it might've not sat well with longtime
Final Fantasy fans and with the usual linear open world being upgraded to a fully open world could have missed the mark as well but once again I was not disappointed.
All changes to the usual formula were welcomed. The driving is a particular favorite new inclusion for me as I love snapshot moments and my god does this game have
    plenty of those.
The graphics are stunning as no other game has made me feel the weight and size of the world since Shadow Of The Colossus.
The linearity of the story was a little troublesome at times but it was a feat overcome due to the amazing battles across this epic world. Another issue was the
story's length as with Final Fantasy games you're normally engaged for an average of 40 hours and with this game being half of the time I only wished it went on for
a bit longer. With that being said the much more noticeable side quests were appreciated as they added an element of fun to each area of the game.
The characters that inhabit this world are also some of the most interesting in the series yet with Noctus being a definite standout among the others (good job he's
    the protagonist then!).
My final concern was with the Kingsglave film as a lot of lore and story elements were revealed through there and a few twists that were spoiled by the film. I feel
as if they released the film after the game the response would've been better and the surprises the game had to offer weren't highlighted in the film.
Wrapping this up I rate Final Fantasy XV an 8/10.
The game is truly one of the best this year and a welcome return to the franchise!

All in all, this journey between the 4 band of brother plays off even when I'm not sure what this journey was about.

Graphic: 8/10: Would be a 10 if there wasn't any framerate issues but the world still looks great!

Story 6/10: If this wasn't a Final Fantasy series it would probably get an 8 but there are just too many out of character moments that just don't add up in the end.

Gameplay 8/10: Everything is fluent in the game my only complaint would be that the camera is a bit funky, and really messed up the combat.

Audio 9.5/10: The soundtracks are great!!! the idea of putting all the FF-series soundtracks in the game is GENIUS!!! There are some moments when dialogue is hard to hear due to monsters or random music but that's only a small issue.

This game is great for those looking to fill their Final Fantasy fix and by this I mean if you're looking to become involved with on screen characters. If so, then this game will be for you, maybe not in the beginning but the best things come to those who wait.

FINAL FANTASY XV has all the ingredients that makes for a great game. I was admittedly saddened when they announced the changes but I accepted this was their vision and embraced changed. I find the battle system a little simplistic but rewarding.

Graphics are top notch. Story is great but you can get a little confused would recommend watch the Anime series and Kingsglaive before starting.

I didn't update the game because I have limited GB in my home so I found some problems that probably are fixed such: lag two times in a battle vs one boss, the face of one person in a city had two different heads and at the end of the game again with a boss I jumped and suddenly everything was dark while the battle kept going so I had tot restart the game. But again, I guess this is already fixed. Sometimes it can be boring driving the car or just watching the car moving without anything to do. So you feel you are wasting your time although sometimes you can skip this if you go directly to parkings but there are only a few and they're in the middle of nowhere. The map looks awkwardly outdated. A part from this you start with many sidequests that are really not interesting but you can do a few to earn experience, objects and money, but dont' get obssesed with this and follow the main missions because the driving thing is tedious. Gameplay is ok you only need to move, dodge, and attack although I felt like pressing buttons with not knowing much what I was doing except for one technique. I finished the game in 31 and a half hours so it's quite short for being a ff but I didn't mind. Which I really missed was more scenes or things to help you follow the story. Expand

After so many years of development, Final Fantasy XV is not what I expected it to be. The universe is immense and beautiful and the characters are just fine. But the story is short and disappointing and the gameplay suffers from lack of depth. FFXV is a good game, but it can never bring the former glories back to the series.

Even as you reflect on the rarity of a blockbuster that's willing to take real risks, you'll be left with the uncomfortable realisation that ten years wasn't quite long enough, after all. Those jagged edges are, in the end, just a little too sharp. [Feb 2017, p.110]

Despite a divided feel, torn between what it was and what it plans to be, Final Fantasy XV has a lot to offer. If you're a diehard JRPG fan, then it's a positive sign that the series can cross over to a new format. And if you're just looking for an open world adventure, Final Fantasy XV certainly has that in spades, while doing just enough things differently to separate it from the likes of Dragon Age and Elder Scrolls.
