Final Fantasy XV is a great game and an unforgettable experience, but it's let down a bit by some poor design choices and a lack of development time.

Final Fantasy XV features a simple yet understandable story, seemingly lacking compared to epics such as past Final Fantasy games, but is presented as a massive road trip, which leaves a lasting impression to the player. You traverse the game's world with Prince Noctis and his friends Gladiolus (bodyguard), Ignis (butler, driver, cook) and Prompto (photographer) riding the Regalia, the King's personal luxury car. Along the way comical relief Prompto takes photos of the whole band in various circumstances, which can be seen at the end of the day and saved in a photo album if the player wants to. The boys have to rest at night so they can cash-in their earned XP, and they can rest either at hotels/motels (with bonus XP) or camp out in the wild (where you cook food and get buffs). The combat system is simple and the action is real-time, not turn-based like other JRPGs. The soundtrack is truly epic and regal, matching the game's themes. The story is simple. Young Prince Noctis has lost his father King Regis from enemy assassination and his Kingdom of Lucis has been invaded by the evil empire of Niflheim, so Noctis has to take it back and save the world from the beasts ravaging it.

The game is primarily set in an open world in the Kingdom of Lucis with beautiful and varied terrain, but initially there is not much of story backdrop or story progression, which is a strange choice because the average player won't care about the game as much. In the open world you can perform a few story missions, many side quests or many more beast hunts. Later on the game becomes more linear and is set in other regions to drive the plot to its conclusion, and the player is given the ability to go back and forth between the open world and the other regions. After the story ends there is post-game content, comprising of more side quests and high level beast hunts. There is also a New Game Plus mode, too.

At this point I have to warn players that unfortunately Final Fantasy XV feels somewhat incomplete and rushed, because the story is minimal, some important characters are killed off-screen with no explanation, many unanswered questions remain, while some of the later regions are over too soon. The true enemy of Noctis is not the one we all initially thought, a surprising twist I didn't see coming, but still it was underwhelming. If you want to learn more of the Final Fantasy XV backstory you 'd better watch the Kingsglaive movie and the Brotherhood anime mini-series on Youtube. Thankfully the developers have added some scenes from the Kingsglaive movie via free DLC to flesh out the story. Game producer Hajime Tabata has promised to keep updating the game for many more months with free and paid DLC, but I doubt the team are going to do anything major as rewriting the story.

All in all, Final Fantasy XV is a rushed game that should have been terrific, and needed more development time in order to address its problems. It still is a great experience, though. I wholeheartedly enjoyed the game as it is, and I think any RPG fan should play this game.

After 10 long years, FFXV has finally released. Now the question is " Was it worth the wait?"

Yes, I believe it was. I am 20 hours into the game and I am enjoying the open world it gives me along with it's sidequests and I am still only beginning the story. The combat is nice and flows well most times. The ascension and elemancy are good at building up your characters and their spells.

The ascension and elemancy are good at building up your characters and their spells. The characters, while clever, do get annoying as they repeat their dialogue over and over.

But there are some bugs every now and again like pixels will get distorted when I do link attacks or imperial dropships will glitch and start moving like a student driver is at the wheel then it will go through the map I'm on.

Story - As far from previous final fantasy games (except FF13), they usually have interesting to great story or plot but as far as FFXV goes, it is still dissapointing despite the hype. The main story is short for a open world game, the story is too simple, too serious sometimes, and some parts are annoying and majority of the characters are unlikable or not even memorable except the main antagonist (wont spoil) and the leading lady which are for me the best characters in the game, they are even better than the boyband protagonist. As summary for the story, Noctis the prince of Lucis on the day the start of the game will have a wedding ceremony with Lunafreya, A former princess of Tenebrae and an oracle for a peace treaty between Lucis and Nifleheim. However, While Journeying to the place of the wedding, the group learned on the way that the empire of Nifleheim have betrayed Lucis and stole its crystal, in addition, King Regis (Father of Noct), Lunafreya and Noctis himself has been announced dead following the betrayal. It is now Noctis and his friends mission to take back Lucis from his enemies and also recover ancient artifacts which he can use against Nifleheim. The story then includes some complications and shows secrets in between. The side quests really doesnt help either since most are just fetching quests which are repetitive nowadays in open world games. Still though, I love the interaction of the main characters in game though. A score of 7/10.

Gameplay - The game borrowed the gameplay mechanics of another big Square enix title Kingdom Hearts. It is simple, action packed and nice for an RPG game. It is satisfying. Another good addition on the game is the things you can do in the world, fishing, riding cars, getting selfies and many other things that makes the world alive and fun. However, the cons of the game is you can only control Noctis in game. You cant use other characters, in addition, the spell mechanic of this game is bad. so bad that i wont recommend you doing a magic build. Another thing to note is that shops are almost unusable since the only thing you can buy from them are weapons and a few items. A score of 8/10 will suffice.

Graphics - Since the coming of PS3, gone are the days that Square Enix titles are the forefront of advanced graphics and beautiful scenery and environment. However, I can tell you that this game is BEAUTIFUL. The environment are gorgeous. The thing i really love from this game is the design of the monsters especially those large ones which are gargantuan in size. It is even better than the critically acclaimed Witcher 3 in terms of World and monster designs. So pretty, a score of 10/10

Music and sound - Im neutral on this one. This game really highlighted retro music of past FF games. It is good for me and fun, however, due to this, the game didnt put much new music for the ears to listen too. If you are a gamer of past FF games. You will be familiar with majority of the games soundtrack. As to voice acting, the english version sucks. They are literally out of place, everyone is made like an FF character design and identical if you take away the bad haircuts or ridiculous and faces then suddenly you have one who speaks british accent, mexican accent, etc. I prefer gamers to use the japanese version. A score of 7/10.

    Overall average = 8

Finally, We're all here playing this game which spent 10 years to make. It is satisfying, fun and as a gamer of previous FF games. It is both a familiar and new experience for me. Is it good? OF COURSE IT IS. but is it better and revolutionary compared to some previous FF Games? OF COURSE NO. But regardless, this is still a must buy for those FF enthusiast out there. Congrats to Square Enix for putting their best to finally finish this game. Thanks

While the first act more than lives up to it's exciting open world billing the latter stages of the game, with one in particular, become far too tedious. It's a fun little journey, full of campy and somber moments alike, that makes you wish you would never reach your destination.

Regarding the gameplay, I think this new action-RPG approach is taking the franchise in a good direction and it brings the combats to a higher level of enjoyment. Unlike other Final Fantasy games, I didn't really need to do level grinding in order to progress through the story (except for chapter 14) completing only the side quests I was feeling like doing, which makes everything more dynamic.

The only negative things about this game are: bad camera handling (sometimes I lost track of Noctis) especially during combat ; the story is told poorly with gaps here and there ; and many of the side quests are irrelevant which makes completing 100% of them not really attractive.

It's been about 10 years since a game called Final Fantasy Versus XIII was shown. That game would later on become known as Final Fantasy XV. Many people were waiting a long time for this to come out obviously (especially since XII wasn't really all that good, and XIV is an MMO) people wanted another solid single player FF and to many XV was the answer. So does it hold up? Was it worth the wait? What does it have to offer? Let's dive right on in, and figure it out.
Graphics: The game is very pretty to look at which is no surprise, but it does feel like it has cut corners in certain departments. One of which is many of the NPC's look generic, and are constantly reused with different color schemes. The models just seem choppy, and even worthy of PS2 quality. Also a few of the enviroments are bland, and come off bland, empty, and open. Despite these minor discrepancies, the game looks great for the most part, and really shows off some magnificent art and detail. The main character models look good, and detailed. Some of the enemies really look savage, and threatening. Animations for most models look good, but again going back to the NPC's...many of them move about in an awkward fashion, and though this is a JRPG, the lipsync is still kind of goofy. Don't worry it's still better than X's lipsyncing.
Combat: This is the biggest change the game has to offer. It's not turn based, and you don't use any other characters, besides the main protagonist. It's pure action combat. Think of it playing similar to Kingdom Hearts. Luckily the combat is very responsive, and easy to get used to after a bit of practice. Learning to dodge, and use the correct weapons in the right situations is crucial for victory. You can also eat/camp to buff your characters up before a tough battle. Many weapons are available for use in FFXV, anywhere from guns to swords. Variety is definitely a welcome aspect, but again you will have to make sure you know what weapons work against certain enemies, or a fight can take much longer. Weapons are the strong suit in this game, but sadly I can't say the same for magic, which is another staple in the series. Magic is very limited in the game, and comes with a cooldown after use. Granted the magic is quite powerful if crafted correctly....but you wont be seeing many spells here. Mainly just fire, ice, and lightning (with a few exceptions much later in the game.) so don't go expecting to cast off ultimas, flares, meteors, etc. Total bummer. I do hope that they fix the magic system because it just seems so lackluster. Luckily the weapon combat is solid, and you may even be able to use a few summons on your adventure as well. There are also joint attacks (which take the place of limit breakers) and can prove to be quite useful in not only hurting the enemy, but also giving you a bit of breathing room. Each character has a few of these attacks to unlock, and they will be crucial to victory.
Leveling System/Ascension: EXP is present in this game, and of course plays a big role. There is also AP which allows you to upgrade your characters and various other aspects of the game. Your EXP stocks up and will not level you up unless you go to camping grounds or an inn. This is very important! Let me explain as to why that is. Let's say I have 20k EXP stocked up on my characters, and I decide to go to an inn so it will start to level my team up. Certain inns will yield an XP bonus. I have seen it range from 1.2k boost to 3.0 boost. Obviously inns that yield a bigger bonus will cost more to stay at. So if you want to level up significantly faster, then that would be your best bet. Now let's say I go to a camping ground to level up and rest up. Camping will not yield bonus XP, but instead offers you the option to buff your characters up with a meal. Some of these LIMITED buffs offer a huge bonus in HP, XP gain (for fights after you camp) and attack power. This is a good option to use if you are stuck at that boss that keeps giving you trouble, and you need an extra boosts in stats. However there are also diners all over the world that have a limited selection of meals to eat that will boost stats. These are also on a time limit, and you can only buff yourself up with one meal at a time. So don't go in thinking you're going to eat 3 things and get all the benefits from every meal. It will just replace the stats from your prior meal. IT DOES NOT STACK! Now that all that is out of the way let me go in depth with Ascension. AP is required to up your Ascension skills. Some of these include new moves, permanent EXP gain, and the ability to equip more accessories. It's a very simplistic system, and is clearly intended to not put too much pressure on new players to the series. I wont say anything else on it, because there just really isn't much else to say. It's kind of a weak system as far as customizing goes, however AP is shared between all characters so you can really go to town on it.
Exploration: The first half of the game has a lot to explore, while the second half of the game is much weaker, and linear. However it is very story driven, and attempts to finish telling the story. There are many things to find on the world map, such as loot, ingredients for cooking, ores for car customization, and a few weapons here and there. There are also hunts, and dungeons as well. Many of these are optional, but recommended. You can traverse the lands on foot, in your car, or my personal favorite: Chocobo! Also worth noting that your car is upgradeable so it will perform better, and your choco will level up, which in turn also improves his/her performance. The choco gains new skills/stats automatically. All you have to do is ride it, and in time it will level up. There is another method of transportation, but I'm sure any FF vet already knows what that involves. There are many areas and sidequests to explore, but I didn't find much loot in way of weapons/accessories. This kind of bummed me out because I like a vast number of weapons I can pick and choose from. This now brings me to my next category...
Weapons/Accessories: The main protagonist can use any weapon/magic in the game. The others are set only to use 2 types of weapons, and any magic in the game. Certain weapons obviously yield certain stats, and possibly some sort of elemental buff as well. Pretty standard, and again I feel they made it this way to go easy on the newer players. There are some upgradeable weapons, but it's very basic. Don't go expecting the weapon system to be like FFVII where you can slap materia on it, and make it a powerhouse. Ain't happening! The game also offers accessories. These are pretty standard in FF titles. Some give EXP bonus, and some give more HP/MP/ETC. You can unlock more accessory slots via ascension so that's cool. There is no way to upgrade your accessories (at least not that i'm aware of) so don't hold your breath on that. Also going back to FFVII this game kind of reminded me of it, because there is no armor in the game. Just fatigues. Basically different skins for your character to wear. I haven't noticed any sort of advantage to them, and they seem to be purely cosmetic. So just like FFVII you only have to worry about weapon/accessory load out. No armor. Which is a bummer, because adding armor into the game adds depth/challenge.
Skills: Each character has a given skill that they can do. For example Noctis can trigger a fishing mini game at various fishing holes. The fishing mini game is done well, and can yield fish that provide items/food for camping. The skill levels up as well, and will give more bonuses to you. Ignis can cook for the team at a campground which as stated before can buff the team up with some great temporary stat boosts. The more he cooks for the team, the higher the level goes. Gladio has survival tactics that focus on collecting more items after a battle. The more you travel on foot, the more it levels up, and last but not least is prompto who has the photography skill. Probably one of the coolest skills in the game. He can basically chronicle your entire journey with photos. The more photos taken, means the more photography levels up.You can even share your exploits on social media if you desire. A cool little feature that I hope more games do. It's kind of hard to take a snapshot in battle with other games, so maybe this one will set the bar, since all photography is automatic. You can also save up to 150 pictures. So save those memories! The skill system is something that is again, very simplistic, but at least adds a bit more of depth.
Music/Sound: No complaints here. Nothing but praise. The music is very good, the sound of a sword slicing, or a gun shooting is pleasing. The voice acting is top notch, and if that wasn't enough for you...well you even get to listen to past Final Fantasy music in your car while you drive to your next objective (so long as you don't fast travel!) You can even purchase an MP3 player in-game and listen to it while travelling on foot! Pretty cool idea!
Story: It can be a bit confusing and lackluster at times. A lot of stuff happens off screen. I'm wondering if that is due to the DLC that will be coming out in the future. There isn't much backstory on the boys either. I hope you enjoy anime, and CGI movies, because there is an hour long anime called brotherhood that explains the characters a bit more in-depth, and then there is the movie called Kingsglaive which I still haven't seen, but again gives more insight to the overall struggle between the empire and Lucis. I feel that they really did skimp out on story with this installment, but for what it is worth, the bit they do give you is very interesting, and I wont spoil anything here, but this game probably had one of the best endings in gaming history. Just pay attention, and you may see or hear some interesting things! Also seriously if you do like Anime, then I suggest checking out Brotherhood. It's not balls out action, but it does have some, and the stories are good and hold weight. Don't bother with it if you don't plan to play this though, as nothing will really make any sense to you.
So that's about all I can think of off the top of my head about this game. My final thoughts on it are pretty clear that I do like this game (please refer to attached photo) and I may not think that it was worth a 10 year wait, but it's better than XIII.....but nowhere near as good as XIV....or XII (which will have an HD release next year with a bunch of new things for NA audiences to enjoy)This however is still a solid entry in the series, and Square has already announced that it plans to update the game with new features such as added cutscenes to explain some of the happenings that occurred off-screen, a possible character switching system, a new game plus mode, and other free updates to keep the game running smoothly, and keep the player playing for a long time. Seriously though, how come they didn't just add new game plus before launch? One thing to remedy with the lack of new game plus for now is that you can continue playing the game to wrap up any loose ends after you beat it. Gotta beat them super bosses! So in time the game should get better, but in the meantime just enjoy it for what it is. A good solid RPG with enough content to have you playing for hours on end. To the few that actually read this, thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts on it. Happy Gaming!

Overall Final Fantasy XV is a great game, however a flawed one at that. Moreover, the transition from open-world to linearity, by the end of the game, is slightly disappointing as (following from chapter 8) many areas that could've been opened up to free exploration, were relegated to a 'corridor-esque' experience (especially chapter 13, a significant low point during the course of the plot). A few other negatives would include: the majority of sidequests being bland, uninteresting, and uninspired fetchquests; the villain (although intriguing and enigmatic-if somewhat obvious-at first) being made a typical, maniacal bad-guy; and issue of the camera being hard to negotiate whilst in combat (especially in tight spaces, such as dungeons).
Moving on from the negatives, FFXV boasts great dungeon design (for the most part), beautiful visuals and stunning vistas, very human interactions between the main characters (in spite of their archetypal natures and average voice acting, they develop into very likeable characters), fun and engaging combat and levelling systems, and ultimately a satisfactory ending despite it all.
In conclusion, FFXV holds up to be a fundamentally good and fun game in spite of its tumultuous development cycle and its most glaring flaws. I can recommend this game to anyone who has a passion for RPGs in general, as I was drawn in by its core gameplay, charm and music alone having only played one JRPG in my life and having otherwise coming away from its story a little disgruntled.

You can update your abilities as you progress and need to think with certain enemies how to beat them. It is not button mashing but tweaking abilities. I really liked the world and traveling around. Now for the bad... There are ridiculous amounts of times you get caught up by an inch high cliff and the surrounding where you cannot get through something or you cannot see something. The other issue is how SLOW you drive. I mean you have a car that looks like a Bugatti that is almost a character in and of itself and yet it goes 55 everywhere? Lame. That and a lot of 'loading....' were a reason I did not like this game enough to dock it two grades. It seemed well worth the weight in depth, what you could do, exploration, difficulty keeping you entertained. But the loading and bad getting stuck was lame at times. But maybe on the PC it loads faster, on the PS4 it was slow at times. Near playing 30 plus hours on it I was starting to be like: "Come on load!" when doing fast traveling. Overall the game is worth playing and the good story, good characters and actual fun of fighting enemies makes it feel like a return to form. I would not rate it as high as FF7, FF8, FF6, or FF12 but it definitely is light years better than FF13 and I would say it is in the middle of the pack overall of FF games for fun. Expand

The atmosphere and aesthetic is fantastic, characters are cool, love the photography, cooking and fishing, resting at campfires, on a roadtrip.

Loving the open world and questing, finding treasures and gathering food, great stuff. Fishing is interesting, it's not just throw and reel, see for yourself.

I've only played 6 hours so far as I got it today and I have somewhat of a life so this is just my impression up to now, I imagine it can only get better and better with introduction to bosses + other areas of the map!!
Looking forward to seeing some cool looking buildings later on where the s**t goes down!

    Things I dislike:

Driving - You're not really free to drive, even if you select manual driving, you basically just have control over accelerating, moving on to the wrong side of the road, turning left or right, U-turns and the handbrake. You can't go driving off road, that was a bit of a disappointment I admit BUT not anything that bothers me too much.

Music - Not a big fan, one of the reasons I love Final Fantasy games is for the soundtrack, and at the moment I can't say I'm enjoying the soundtrack. However, you can play the soundtracks of past games through the radio in the car, so that's something at least! :)

I just really wished they added more to some of the side-quests, but other than that I had a really enjoyable experience.

Where FFXIII might have felt a bit colder and heartless than the rest of the series; FFXV is the complete opposite..it is warm, open, free, fun, and brimming with heart and soul. Thank you Square Enix for continuing my favorite franchise of all time! It was worth the wait. I recommend this to any fan of the franchise, and also anybody who enjoys a brilliantly made open world, rpg, or action game! This game will touch your emotions and your heart! I hope people new to the series come to feel the way that I did when I played my first FF game & fell in love with the franchise! FINAL FANTASY IS BACK and BETTER THAN EVER! Expand

For starters this game has among the best graphics and breathtaking landscapes I have ever seen, alongside The Witcher 3. The special effects in combat also work extremely well and don't seem to cause any major fps drops (atleast with PS4). The combat system of this game is also one of the most addicting ones I have witnessed, it starts out slowly and adds up to be quite diverse with link strikes, short term god mode, spells, summons and a wide variety of weapons to choose from. The only disadvantages I found in combat are the camera which can sometimes be annoying and the fact that the flow of combat must often be interrupted (changing gear through menus mid-combat, changing from Active to Wait mode in combat etc.).

Now for the story elements. The main story itself is quite engaging but the best part are your travelling companions who are truly the backbone of this game. Roaming the world with them really feels like a trip with your friends (with some touching insight into their psyche sometimes involved -I'm looking at you Prompto) and ultimately ends up absolving this game of its vices. The biggest problem with the game however are the side-quests.

They are completely uninspired and completely disconnected from the game's events. Some really tragic stuff is going down in the main line and you are running around catching frogs. In addition, the quests are extremely repetitive (find gem, bring gem, get another quest to bring another gem) and the rewards are somewhat mediocre themselves, so you will mostly run around doing repetitive and boring side quests to accumulate experience. One partial solution around this would have been if they had adjusted the main storyline a bit beforehand to offer some purpose to the future king running around playing everyone's doormat (Like they did with the soul-saving mechanism in Lightning Returns)

Overall, if you can overlook the issue with the side quests (seriously, who thought of them?), this game is totally worth diving into and will reward you with some memorable moments.

I will also be holding off on bringing up any spoilers, because this review is purely meant to highlight the pros and cons of this title.

Being a fairly devout fan of the Final Fantasy series (Up until Final Fantasy 13), I can safely say that I've had a love-hate relationship with the franchise over time. That being the case, I've found myself being extremely cautious when it came to this title, due to the negative direction of the franchise as a whole over the past few years. Though, I'd have to say that I was quite pleasantly surprised at the standard of quality among the series that's set by this game. Though, there are some pretty noticeable problems.

    - Overall Atmosphere -

Final Fantasy 15 is among my Top 5 favourite Final Fantasy games now (My favourites being; FF5,FF6,FF7,FF9,FF15). This is because it rekindled my love for the overarching aesthetic of the Final Fantasy universe! The world in FFXV is beautiful, and is more than likely going to captivate anyone who can experience the game first hand. Its sprawling landscapes, mysterious geological anomalies, and beautiful cultural locations give life to a world that could only dwell in a Final Fantasy game. Alongside the world, the game has a fairly satisfying combat system, which will leave you feeling like an absolute badass at the end of most fights. But we'll speak more about the combat system later in this review.

    - Story -

The main story, on the other hand, is largely subjective. This is due primarily to its quite blatant problem when it comes to the story lacking a consistently entertaining experience. At times the story can be engrossing and will have you loving the characters and atmosphere. Though, on several occasions it leaves you waiting for something overwhelmingly extravagant to happen, when nothing ends up happening at all. For instance, there is a certain chapter in which the game loses all momentum and leaves you hoping that the segment will end very soon. This can be regarded as a large issue, especially when speaking of a Final Fantasy game. Though, there is one arguably good/bad change (depending on how you look at it) to the story's progression and details. The story of FFXV is immensely more comprehensive than most Final Fantasy games' narratives, which is actually somewhat of a drawback, in my opinion.

    - Post-Game Activities -

The post-game activities (Things you can do after the story is complete) are replete with a variety of interesting and uninteresting quests and objectives. Some of which will have you exploring dungeons and fighting fantastic creatures, while others will just be boring fetch quests that add nothing to the overall experience. There are also many separate outlying dungeons and areas in which you will be tasked with acquiring Royal Arms and many other rare weapons, accessories, and items which allow you to personalize your experience in exploration and combat. But there is only so much you can do, which may leave you tired of playing the game for subsequent hours after completion.

    - Characters -

Love 'em or hate 'em, it's all up to how you view these characters in the end. Generally speaking, the characters are much more in-depth than what they initially come off to be. Plus, they exude a certain wittiness that some may find annoying, and others may find charming and quirky. I'm not going to say much else regarding the characters, being that it's primarily preferential whether you like them or not.

    - Combat -

The combat looks and feels fierce during large sequences and against powerful enemies. But if you were hoping to have your very sanity challenged by a painstaking and bloodletting challenge akin to a Dark Souls perma-death run, you've come to the wrong place. The combat, while visually satisfying, is not challenging at all (In my opinion). Even larger boss battles can be very forgiving, when all you have to do is stock up on restoratives (Phoenix Downs, Elixirs, (Hi)-Potions, etc). Restoratives make you borderline invincible , due to the fact that you and your team could be completely wiped out, and all you have to do is use one Mega-Phoenix, then everyone is back on their feet with full health and a decent status buff.

    - Conclusion -

I couldn't touch on some of the more minor topics, due to the 5000 character limit. But if you're interested in a visually stimulating, slightly more in-depth hack and slash game with a fun and lively atmosphere, along with a few glitches/problems, I would highly recommend that you check out Final Fantasy 15! I hope you find my opinion of the game helpful!

The story starts out easy to follow, but starts to lose its steam around its second act. It quickly becomes a mess of confusion as most Final Fantasy stories do. There are some jarring transitions to certain areas in the game that seem to carry little purpose. Although its third act is VERY short compared to the first two, it wraps up the story quite nicely and gives a very nice feel-good moment, thanks to the strong characters. Most other Final Fantasy casts aren't as likable, despite what some nostalgia-blind folk might tell you. This cast really does make the story worth seeing through to the end.

If you're not one for story and characters, then the gameplay is rock solid. The combat is similar to that seen in the Kingdom Hearts series. It's fast, frantic, and fun. Attacks flow well, and you have special abilities that your partners can use for various purposes. Multiple enemies can become a chore if you don't defeat them fast enough, but it doesn't take away from a very solid and enjoyable core system. In my opinion, it beats just about any turn-based system out of the water.

Overall, it's a game that puts its story behind its fun characters and equally fun gameplay. A gorgeous world packed full of giant creatures to battle, which can only be taken advantage of fully with the current open world and free flowing combat systems.

I don't think a game has ever left me feeling as conflicted as this one has. The story is the biggest problem with the game. It's far too fast paced and never slows down. Unfortunately this also leads to problems with the characters. The main 4 are fine and are quite possibly some of my favorite in the franchise. The side characters however are hardly there. Even characters like Luna and Cor, two heavily advertised characters are hardly there. It doesn't give us any time to get attached or to even get to know anyone outside of the main 4. The Altissia segment i think highlights all of this the best. You do 2 short quests, meat 2 new characters that you never see again and you're done. This being said not everything about it was bad. I think if it was just better paced and told it would have been absolutely fantastic. As i said the main 4 are great, there's a very real sense of comradery between them that i've never seen in a final fantasy or even most games before. Throughout the story i found myself caring about these 4 more and more which did surprise me considering the stories issues. The ending was also pretty damn great even making me tear up a bit.

Gameplay is where i think the game shines. While it does have the problems that a lot if not all open world games suffer from. The combat was so fun that i never really found myself minding at all. The combat is probably the most fun i've had in a final fantasy game. If you like kingdom hearts chances are you'll love the combat. The leveling system i think is pretty damn unique i can't say for sure if i'd like it to be a thing in all FF's but i can say that if they make a XV-2 i hope they stick with it. There was also some things i wasn't really expecting like the AP or the variety of weapons. The skills were also a very nice touch. Each one of the main 4 has a skill that they can use that skill being that characters hobby, Noctis likes to fish, Prompto takes pictures, Gladio is an outdoorsman and Ignis likes to cook. Some are more useful than others ignis probably being the most useful. The fishing mini-game is pretty nice, probably the most realistic fishing in a game that's not a fishing sim. Food buffs are also a very nice touch to the game and something i hope is carried on in future titles. The chocobo riding is pretty great too allowing for an alternate form of travel as well as a pretty fun mini-game. The gameplay's not perfect though i think the magic system should have been expanded further and summoning shouldn't be as powerful or random as it is. Riding around in the car can be a bit mundane though personally i liked it. As i said before it does suffer from problems the open world genre as a whole has. There's also everything after the open world segment. Now everything after the open world part of the game is honestly not very long and a lot of people have problems with it. Me personally i didn't mind it. It wasn't great but i think i'd have more of a problem with it had it lasted longer.

    Misc praises and criticisms:
The games music is absolutely fantastic
    The game looks fantastic
I really liked some of the side quest characters
I wish there was more unique towns in the game.
This is one of the few games to actually do night correctly.
There should have been more to Altissa and the last parts of the game.

I've put almost 90 hours into the game so far and while the game does very much have story problems I enjoyed the bulk of the gameplay. FFXV isn't perfect but i can say i look forward to whatever Squenix decides to do next and i just hope they do a better job of telling those stories.

Many of dungeons are well designed, so it offers interesting stuffs to enjoy after finishing main story.

Also the worst part of this game is how easy it is. With a game such as Final Fantasy I remember a true challenge but this didn't cut it. I think they made it easy to engage all ages but I was only a kid when I played FFVII and it was such an accomplishment to beat but with this game I felt empty after defeating the final boss. I agree that there is a obvious problem with the story focus, sometimes i felt like i was playing a game i didn't understand. But for me it's a PS4 problem. The creators focus too much on technicality but no more on the storyline ( the division , metal gear solid for example).
Being said even with that pb i found the overall experience very enjoyable.

The saddest part of this game is knowing what it could have been given the time it deserved. Every aspect of this game is beautiful yet unfinished. You are continually led along intricately detailed pathways that lead to dead ends or seem to head in one direction before awkwardly diverting down a different and underwhelming route. You can literally see the seams where portions of the game were cut apart and pasted together to make a 2016 release deadline, and its sad, because you are continuously aware of the team's hope for there to have been so much more. The most noticeable seams being where they hacked apart the narrative leaving a story both incomplete and unintelligible. Despite this, the core characters are reasonably well written and it is their journey that keeps this hodgepodge collage of a video game glued together in a way that amazingly still works so well. Positives for me: Cooking, Camping/Hotels/, Monsters/Bosses, Photography, Dungeons, World Design. Let Downs: All villains besides Ardyn, npc design/animation and general programming/ All characters besides main four are ankle deep or shallower, cities are barely explorable, Side quests are repetitive and poorly written. Narrative makes zero sense unless you spend hours researching online. It's easy to gripe about how a game could have been better, and I was spoiled by playing the Witcher III just before this, but even so, a very positive experience. Expand

Its a decent little Advent Story style movie, fit with Action and a small lead up to the world, so you can understand what kind of world your living in.

The game's graphic are well done, and the soundtrack isn't the level of previous final fantasy's but I think nostalgia is to blame for that one. The open world is a nice touch, and the car for the life of me, I can't understand why people are dogging on it. when final fantasy has had everything from robots, airships, motorcycles, cars and beasts to ride on since its birth.

The Sphere grid I'm a little mixed on. always have been since 10 but, its not terrible.

The Magic system is what it is, because of the world your in. Yes Final fantasy has traditionally been about dungeons and dragons quality wizards an sorcery but this is a timeline where the King controls most of the Magic and is part of the entire reason it exists for those in the world. Magic is scarce and set to only the chosen and those, the chosen share to.

Combat system is fairly well done, with the exception of holding the button down to win.. This should have been fixed with perhaps a difficulty setting where new comers that want to just see story and not worry about combat perchance get to speed through it like other games. (Kingdom hearts has an easy mode as well) All in all the pace is well done, and the action reminds me of Dirge of Cerberus more so then anything else.

No female characters? That's fine, sure this is a bromance game of Noctis and his 3 Guardians, but hating on it because it lacks a strong female protagonist is silly.

Storyline could have been more fleshed out and the world could have had more to do in it, but all in all its about what would be expected from a video game of today's standards.

I'm going to clarify something that most fans seem to miss.. Your not fan of the final fantasy series, your a fan of Hironobu Sakaguchi who hasn't made a final fantasy since X. Which would explain why 12, 13 and 15 are so mediocre compared to the rest. Your not dealing with the Mastermind who created Final Fantasy, but his successor that tried to salvage the name.

As a final fantasy? Its lacking, but the name died over 10 years ago so that is a moot point. As a Video game, its rather entertaining, and I have no golden pedestal to put it on because the name is a misnomer for a Title long expired.

All in All I would rate this higher then the last trashy titles I've played in the last 5 years. I can't name but a few RPG titles that even peaked my interest including the Tales Series (Last game being terrible) and the Trails of Cold Steel/In the Sky Series.

Take the game for what it is, and don't put labels on it that it doesn't deserve or rate it from a standpoint that is fallible.

I am Setsuna wasn't bad either try those instead, plus they are re-releasing Dragon Quest 7 and 8 on 3ds. But is this a bad game. Short answer. No.

FFXV is a defiantly a game for the casual FF player. If you have heard about the series and want to jump in. Now would a good time. If new FF players feel brave after that and want to try out other big hitters in the franchise like 9, 7, 6, 4 and even 12. You would not be able to recognise those games, just a fair bit of warning for anyone brave enough to trek in FF history. Maybe 12 would still be some what playable. This doesn't make FFXV a bad game. In fact it brings the franchise to a more main stream audience and that is something FF defiantly needs, because if we are being realistic turn-based RPGS don't do gangbusters, this isn't the PS1 or PS2 era. So the pool of players is smaller and smaller as time goes on. But if you were disappointed by XIII and didn't stick around till Lightning Returns, i'd say give this a chance. This is not the older final fantasies we love, but a newer breed.
Would i recommend it to new FF players; Yes.
Old FF players: Maybe, but know what you are getting into and keep and open mind.
If you think the best FF was 9 and everything after that is garbage. Stay Away from this one. Because you'll just be leaving a negative review.
All in all it is an enjoyable game, the villain is probably the best since Kefka (FF VI for newer players). **SLIGHT SPOILER**(Not much of a spoiler just the infamous bit about this game) Though Chapter 13 can be annoying, whatever you are feeling during Chapter 13 is kind of what the developers want you to feel, if you really think about it.

The only downfall is the summon system, which only comes up when your party is nearly dead and certain summons occur in certain areas.

The voice work is phenomenal and I suggest watching the Final Fantasy Kingsglaive movie before you play the game.

Looking forward to any DLC content that is developed for the game.

    - Camera view is a headache, especially fight big size enemy, having big trouble positioning yourself
    - The way they designed the use of magic is a bad idea
    - Story is somewhat short. Replay experience is somewhat limited. I am not attracted to replay the game after clearing it once or buying the season pass just to check out on the short story that missed out in the game on the other characters.

I thought the game was well done. The game does have some issues with plot, but they're not glaring enough to deter from understanding the gist of the story.Frankly, I probably would have given the game a 9 had it not been for the horrendously done chapter 13 of the game. Anyone who has played the game knows exactly what I am referencing.

The Omen trailer was also super cool. It ended up not meeting my expectations for an FF game, but was fun overall, and thought it tried its best in the current popular opinion of what seems to be "open world = good, linear = bad."

Some main issues I had: the story was incomplete and the pacing wasn't very good, which is evidenced by the fact that DLC focusing on the specific factors will be released. Although there was a clear main purpose through the game, there was more room to relax and explore in the first half while the story picks up greatly and goes to a linear format in the second half. It seemed like this huge open world was created, but then the developers were like "oh crap we need a story." The open world in itself was not very exciting, and contributed to the long loading times. Although the side quests yielded benefits like experience and perhaps a helpful item, they became tedious if I tried to clear them all before progressing onto the main story - which is what I usually do with FF games but couldn't do with this one because of the tediousness. The women of the game weren't too inspiring save for one though she only joins you for a moment, though I suppose the spotlight is to be mostly put on the four main male characters.

The good: of course the graphics are amazing, the character design is top notch. When I look at these characters, I know they are FF characters which is comforting as a long-time fan of the series. The environments besides the vast, deserty one in the beginning in the game were pleasing. What was there of the story was nice, I found myself getting attached to the characters towards the end, but still think it had the potential to be a MUCH better story if so much focus wasn't put on more superficial aspects of the game. The fighting was really fun. I didn't experiment too much with the different weapons offered for Noctis, honestly, as there did not seem to much of a strategic rationale to use one over the other, but they were nice to have. I liked how the particular skills of the main characters (fishing, cooking, photos, and exploring) were used to benefit the characters in a tangible way. I also loved how you could collect music from previous FF games to play in the car, nostalgia incorporated in a very nice way. I played the game in Japanese to augment my Japanese learning, and it was top notch, though what I heard of the English seemed good as well.

I would ideally give this a 7.5 if I could choose between a 7 and an 8. If you are a flexible FF fan, which I suppose you have to be with the game design changes this series has gone through, you might enjoy this game. In the end, I am glad I played it, though I am not sure if I would have played this if it wasn't an FF game. I am not sure how the open world aspect of the game compares with others, but I would not get this game just because it is open world if that is what you like as you would be disappointed by the second half. I am glad they are coming out with new DLC episodes for each of the characters, hopefully that'll help the story a bit. Though I wish the developers could have taken a bit more time (i know they took 10 years but an extra year wouldn't have affected the agony of the wait much) to tighten up the story and incorporate the open world better. I know FF13 had complaints about linearity, but wow what a 360 difference implemented in an imperfect way.

Overall, definitely not my favorite FF game, but enjoyable in the end. Looking forward to see what the DLC adds!

I rarely see a game that is good in so many things and yet fails in so many other things. In the end I had a lot of addicting fun yet I seriously need to complain about some things.

    Graphics 8/10:
They overused post processing effects and eeverything looks a bit too blurry, even on PS4 pro. The lighting and character models look great as do some water effects. The scenery looks nice sometimes and sometimes too bland.

    Sound 10/10:
The only thing this game does not disappoint a single bit: the music. One of the best OST of this decade of any game.

    Fighting system 8/10:
Well, I was sceptical at first, but it the melee feels right. I had a lot of fun bashing Monsters. One subtraction for the **** up use of Esper and one point subtraction for the use of magic. Nice idea, yet totally ****

    Story 6/10:
Having consumed brotherhood and the Kingsglaive beforehand I think the story is OK in general but the narration is sparse and it sucks in comparison to almost all older FF.

    Characters 8/10:
I am only giving them an 8 because I liked them. The charactes are poorly narrrated but they feel alive somehow. The main villain is quite boring. The emo look feels out of place even inside the game world.

    World 7/10:
The Open World is quite enjoyable yet it is still so damn restricted that it is hilarious. The whole car stuff is and it's controls are barely bearable. The Chocobo makes good of that though. The second part of the game where it get's linear is mediocre at best. And chapter 13 is the worst of any FF game.
So let's say spend 40 hours until you go on that ship and you will enjoy this game. Afterwards...

    Post game content 8/10:
You can have some neat stuff there. Yet some of the new dungeons are qite "mad" or bad. Going 4 hours downstairs ... well what a fun.

If you are a Final Fantasy veteran like myself you really have to create an open state of mind for this one to be able to enjoy it. I did and I enjoyed the game until you take the ship to the more linear experience. Then until the post game content I was in constant disappointment.

I hope they take their time to redevelop FF 7 remake away from this style.
So many bad decisions square enix. Your were lucky it is partly fun.

    Pros:
-I found the hack and slash combat refreshing compared to turn-based
-Great voice-acting for the majority of the cast (English)
-Character interaction is great and the team really feels like they're travelling with you. Loved how team members exchange interactions in the car while driving, call out if you get hit, comment on your actions such as trying to open a clearly locked door for the third time, sit around the camp site together etc. The details make them feel alive in their own rights.
-Beautifully animated. Some of the scenes just came alive. Locations were beautiful too.
-Lots of colossal, interesting creatures to fight.
-Some great novel ideas, although some don't pay off.
-The addition of the open-world and side quests was a great move in my opinion.
-I enjoyed the details in the world around me, you could immerse yourself quite easily. Would have been great if there were more areas.
-Really enjoyed the characters (although sometimes comically emo or bratty, I kind of found this endearing and laughed it off. There was enough for me to find each of them likable).

    Cons:
-Chapters 13 onwards. One extremely long and tedious mission where you are stripped of your weapons. This is where it went downhill for me. The mission was like a brand new game with attempts at stealth and otherwise pointless fetch quests to find 'keys to the next door' essentially.
-Combat is almost too easy at times. I walked the earth with a pocket full of Phoenix Downs (used to revive you from the dead), and never even needed them.
-Would've been cool if you could switch up the members of your team. You do get new 'fill in characters' on occasion, but you can't dictate this, and they often don't contribute much anyway.
-Travelling was a mission. Contrary to what some reviewers are saying, an auto-travel option does exist. It's just so specific, I only figured it out midway through the game.
-The story was far too short. I was surprised to discover I had finished the game abruptly 15 chapters in.

    Overall:

Oddly enough, the flaws of this game are not enough to make me regret having played it. Quite the contrary, it;s pretty addictive. I found running around in the open world post-plot a lot of fun.

story is always interesting and gripping and the open world is relaxing and fun and challenging. i often am reminded of road tripping thru america. characters grow on you a ton with the story events. there are females, but your battle squad is the 4 bros korean boy band that wrecks ass.
gameplay is good.. the battle and entire game is essentially witcher 3 in final fantasy flavor in a very good way. i think this game is around the same or higher level of fun than witcher 3, there are more weapon types in this game.
items are simple.. i like the simplicity.. it's not as complex as witcher 3 but there is some crafting where you get recipes to give to blacksmiths. mostly you collect treasure to give to your people of your kingdom of lucis and they give you BANK like thousands GIL yknow. racks on racks. you can sort items and buy and sell while sitting in the car to your next quest, so right when u finish you finished the car ride / loading
the story is good.. i actually like it and it's everything this game couldve delivered. truly relates to many serious themes on planet earth, fighting for peace and freedom and stuff. when bad ppl take over.
noctis is a really good character.. he is realistic with depth and masters his powers etc and the variety of events thru the day cycle is so interesting like night monsters vs daytime ones

i actually really like this game and appreciate it

graphics are fine.. i get constant 60 fps on the high graphics settings there's also a dedicated lite mode to make sure you get 60.

    cons
rushed, in a good way, to keep momentum, but the story encompasses his whole life in a matter of hours which can feel like the progression is breezing by fast, which feels good at times, unlike witcher 3 where he literally doesnt change at all lol
    i want more luna freya
leviathan summon needs to splash more water lol
i think they couldve fleshed out so many parts like noctis as a kid being with luna. how about a dungeon or two. like in old games. and that wouldve built so much better support to appreciate the progressions of the story. im glad they are patching in more of the story..
MORE INGREDIENTS omg i think 2000 more ingredients should be added and way more recipes. having like 200 dishes to make is cool but i think we need way more food every update. like make a onion model then color it white and make it smaller boom garlic model.. and so on.
more gear pls there is like 30 gear pieces of armor to wear haha

i think if the game had a prologue: luna section where you play with her and noct as kids and her growing up would be so badass and add so much to the game.

8/10 overall because it's fun, memorable, story is hot, characters are cool and good examples of real life young people archetypes music is really good omg but shortness of length and lack of detail means it's not perfect 10 or near perfect 9 just an 8 like good

i love the group combos and all that. honestly the game is really fun and if it was released with an independent title it would be a 10/10 for many but with the final fantasy expectations some ppl are mad when they lose lmao

most of the bad reviews state outright they were losing at the game hahaha

oh and also there needs to be a journal.. like in witcher 3.. with a bestiary.. and completed quests.. and everything so you can review the info and appreciate the game. also the script is pretty good in my opinion.. i would say the entire script is casual then concise, funny, meaningful. and the game is not easy.. i have died more in final xv than i did in witcher 3 on hard mode. witcher 3 on hard mode is easy as **** compared to the first area of the world of ruin which i cant even get past and im 5 levels above the recommended level.

the summons are available based on elements so if youre near water, you can summon leviathan etc it wouldnt make sense to do a water summon in the middle of the desert.. so when the weather is raining you can cast the raining thunder summon etc. and i appreciate how the summons of nature actually work with the game's nature weather system.

The story of this game is good and interesting, but the problem is if you want to understand the whole story then you have to first watch Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV and Brotherhood Final Fantasy XV.

This new battle system known as Active X Battle (AXB) is similar to the battle system used in Final Fantasy Type-0 and Kingdom Hearts. The player can only control Noctis, while the other characters are controlled by the AI. In battle, the player can use co-op moves that allows interaction with other characters. The magic system is not very good, while the summoning system is interesting. If Noctis gets KO'd then it's game over, but when Noctis falls to 0 HP then begins critical status and you have a limited time to heal. This battle system is good and interesting, but I was hoping that they will use and improve the ATB system from the previous Final Fantasy games. From Final Fantasy XII to Final Fantasy XV, they began to apply a battle system in which a player can only control one character, which is bad. The last Final Fantasy game where the player could control all the characters in the battle was Final Fantasy X. Unfortunately, after the Final Fantasy X series they stopped using the two best battle systems they made. The CTB system from Final Fantasy X and the ATB system from Final Fantasy X-2 were the best-improved versions of the traditional Turn-Based Battle system. They should use and improve one of these two battle systems or both in new Final Fantasy games. The thing I like in this game is the development of characters. The Ascension Grid is much better than the Sphere Grid from Final Fantasy X.

The idea of the open world is interesting, but they have broken the important rule of JRPGs. At the very beginning, the player can explore the whole world, can complete almost all sidequests and can train all the characters to the maximum level without progressing the story. For me, that's the worst thing in this game. JRPGs must have a semi-open world because in JRPGs the player was supposed to explore the world through the story: step by step the world should open to player to explore, to complete all sidequests and to train all the characters to the maximum level. That they have made this game as a semi-open world and that they put a CTB or ATB system, then this game would be perfect. But since they did not do so, then I gave a score 8 out of 10.

Conclusion: They have give more effort that this game have a excellent graphics and the mechanism of the open world, but they also should give the same effort to make excellent gameplay. In the end I can say that the game is good but they could do it even better. It's a good JRPG and I enjoyed playing it.

Many of the other game fundamentals were either pretty good or at least solid enough to not be annoying. The combat started off new and inventive, although parts of it weren't all that great and by the end I was fairly bored with it. The side quests were pretty average. Voice acting and facial animation was pretty good imo. And the story and characters were mostly competent, although the pacing in particularly wasn't great.

But the biggest thing I felt during this game, and the reason I'm giving it a 9, is that I thought this game did an excellent job of getting the player to often just put down the controller and observe the world. Even in vast open world games, we spend most of our time running through them and often only admiring their beauty while we are busy doing other things. But this game did a great job of replicating the feeling of just driving in a car through beautiful scenery, not taking too much time to worry about what comes next but instead just focusing on what you're seeing outside. I think that this is easily one of the hardest things for games to do well - most of us don't want to take the time to smell the roses when we're playing video games, we want to be continuously occupied by either the story or by doing actions in the game world. But this game really did a fantastic job of bringing me back to that feeling of being on a car trip in a new location, that I almost never get from gaming.

Most of the people think the story is BAD or "THE WORST FINAL FANTASY GAME EVER". but for me its epic. you will never see the game with story like this. okay it really short, but the content of the story is good. the battle system are like Kingdom Hearts; you can attack with weapon, you can transform to wield more than one weapon, your friends can help you in battle and you can interact with your friends in battle.

The grinding system is good. you can challenge yourself with many monster that can be find in side quest. or you can just randomly fight monster when you explore the world of final fantasy xv.
my favorite thing about Final Fantasy XV is about the friendship, the bond between main char and the side kicks cant be found in any Final Fantasy game (i think). Its just like you can play with your friend even though you play it alone.

I finish my FF XV game in 58 hours. that is include doing some quest (almost 70% done) and doing some random exploration. my second attempt i got only 30 hours that i focus only on doing the main story line.

Final Fantasy XV Review: A ballad of the past and future.

A Final Fantasy for fans and first-timers: Developer SquareEnix , boldly declares as you begin your journey into the fifteenth iteration of the legendary JRPG series. In the past decade rpg’s like Fallout, the Mass Effect trilogy and the Witcher series have undergone a quantum leap in open-world exploration and gameplay, while the aging Final Fantasy series has been sharply criticized for forgoing such advances in favor of staying true to series traditions, but with Final Fantasy XV, SquareEnix is endeavoring to breath new life into the aging juggernaut by introducing a massive open-world to explore and a new action-based combat system. While SquareEnix is largely successful in reinvigorating the franchise with more modern gameplay mechanics, they, unfortunately, stumble when it comes to delivering the exhilarating narratives the series has become known for.

By far Final Fantasy XV’s most dramatic departure from tradition is found in its vast and vivid open world of Lucis. While older Final Fantasy’s, like VI & VII, have had semi-open worlds the amount of said world to explore was always limited by story progression. Final Fantasy XV shrugs this tradition by granting the player complete freedom to explore, complete side quest, and progress story content at their leisure. The world is mainly comprised of two environments, one more desert oriented and the other more reminiscent of a wooded forest dotted with rivers, lakes, and marsh lands. Spread throughout the world are numerous outpost and small towns where your party can gain valuable intel on the surrounding area, join hunts to track down dangerous daemons and enjoy status buffing meals from diners and local tipsters. Towns also provide you with an opportunity to stock up on valuable items like potions and elixirs from stores and take advantage experience boost by staying at hotels and caravans. You will need to take full of advantage of these resources as you explore the Kingdom of Lucis, as the world is filled with numerous and dangerous demons waiting to bring Noctis and friends quest to an early conclusion. Of course, this giant world would be wasted if it didn’t have anything to do in it, luckily, Final fantasy XV is full of quest to entice you to stray from the beaten path of the main story. The downside is that most of the quest are basic fetch quest, that while encouraging exploration of the world, offer little in terms of reward or excitement. One quest line literally had me travel to the same farm multiple times to simply harvest vegetables. Of course, with any Final Fantasy the best content is saved for the end game and that remains true with Final Fantasy XV, giving you the opportunity to unlock high level dungeons to truly test your skills.

While Final Fantasy XV’s open-world is an attractive first for the series, it was the combat that kept me engaged throughout my sixty-eight-hour play-through. Longtime fans of Final Fantasy are no doubt familiar with the series traditional turn-based combat, but for the first time in the series, in an effort to attract new fans who may have been turned off by the more methodical pace of the older entries, Square is introducing a new action-combat system that is more akin to the Kingdom Hearts franchise. Let’s be clear: I love turn-based combat and would love for Final Fantasy to continue to innovate in that style; having said that, the new action-combat system in Final Fantasy XV is, to put it simply, exhilarating.

The action of XV is fast paced and a little hectic, I often found myself engaging one group of enemies and had a second or third group join the fray, requiring me to reconsider my tactics on the fly. Luckily, nearly every enemy has a set of weakness and strengths that Noctis and party are fully capable of exploiting, whether it be an enemy weak to a certain weapon type; like lances or great swords, or the traditional magic elements of fire, ice or thunder. To accompany the fast-paced action combat, Noctis has an assortment of warping and phasing abilities that enable the young prince to overcome the direst of encounters. A quick tap of the square(X on Xbone) allows Noctis to phase through incoming attacks and, sometimes, gives Noctis the opportunity to inflict a powerful parry attack. If you find yourself being overwhelmed, a simple push of triangle (Y) will warp Noctis to safety allowing you to regenerate HP and MP and deliver a devastating warp-strike attack upon returning to the fray. As for your party members, while you cannot control them directly, they still serve an important role in combat. By performing certain actions in battle, like attacking an enemy from behind, you can perform a blindside attacks or social link attacks which allows Noctis and a party member to perform a short combo with significantly more damage. Unlike previous Final Fantasy, you do not have direct control of the party durin

FF XV is a mixed experience. I generally like it, but why can't I drive the car myself? The worst car driving in any game I ever played. The car drives by itself on rails, wtf. And you can't go off-road or as character can't even jump over a small fence. This destroyes almost any immersion for me.

My opinion did eventually change and now I actually think it was a game worthy of my time (a lot of time if you’re considering the platinum). Initially though, and maybe it’s because I’m such a noob to the franchise... I just couldn’t get my head around many (if not all) of the facets to this game.

The story seems to divert you away from the interesting things going on in the narrative, the characters seem very 2 dimensional, the combat just made no sense to me and I just ended up winning battles by hitting attack, the music seemed cheap and ps1-like and the ‘gameplay-loop’ was difficult to ‘find’ (click with. I stuck with it though as if Covid-19 delivered anything it delivered time and most if not all of my concerns were at least somewhat turned around. The narrative does eventually take you to more interesting places thematically, I found myself almost liking spending time with the 4 main characters and listening to their interactions. The combat is far from perfect but I did start to gain a better understanding of it and it’s ‘okay’. The various tunes get stuck in your head when you’re not playing and the next time you hear them in-game they strike a chord. And the gameplay-loop... it’s there... and it ain’t bad once you understand it.

Decent package altogether and now I’ll play another Final Fantasy game (probably VII Remake) without any reservations.

edit. So I did go on to earn the Platinum and the game (& characters) continued to grow on me. I actually ended up really enjoying it... and the fight against the super boss 'Omega' will live with me for many a year.

Truly this was a unique experience one can only get by not just playing the story, but exploring the world as much as possible doing as many quests as they can along the way. If you only focus on the story, you're looking at a small corner of a wide canvas. On a note about the story though, I must say once again, they did something that's never been done before. While it's not how I would have wanted things to go, that doesn't make the writing bad to me, on the contrary I respect the unique style of story they tried to tell that they could only capture with the 'Road Trip' experience. Also, props to them for creating easily the most evil villain of the franchise's history. I've never loved to hate a character more in any form of fiction.

In short, this was not my favorite Final Fantasy game, but it could be argued to be the greatest. It's not a perfect game, but it is an amazing one worth the 10 years we waited. Here's to a bright future for the franchise!

Also the combat did have some issues and the story felt a bit short. However, what this game had going for it was the open world. I spent almost 20 hours if not more just running around in Lucis fishing, doing side quests, finding new dialogue, exploring every inch and finding cool stuff. All the character building came from just hanging out in the open world camping, doing and finding little quests, dungeons, practice fighting with Arenea and the bros, watching the pictures at the end of every day, etc. I spent almost 60 hours experiencing every inch of this game and I loved it. The story itself I found to be very impactful and beautiful. Great music, excellent graphics and environment design, and fun mechanics and things to explore. I do believe the game could have been a bit better but is by no means a bad game like others claim it to be. I recommend for everyone to take your time with this one and do not rush through it. The story here is pretty interesting and is complemented well by the movie Kingsglaive. Nothing overly engrossing, but it does set a good stage for our 'boy band' hero's on their road trip around the countryside. And that is the element that's the big draw, the adventure and relationships between the four mates.
The visuals and art design are great. Although, playing it on the original PS4 did come with plenty of frame drop issues. Especially in the built up towns within the open world. And of course the music is exceptional, meeting the standards of any Final Fantasy title (you can even unlock a lot of old tracks from previous FF games).

The game-play is what really won me over with this one. The adventuring and exploration is great, full of monsters to kill and treasures to harvest! The new action based combat is a lot of fun with a great feel to it. Of course, just like most, the biggest criticism is the magic. Mostly because of the friendly fire that all spells can cause. And like most comments, it's not a big deal because you can breeze through the game without using a single spell.

I could go on and on about the vast amount of content that is on offer, such as the fishing and the cooking and the chocobos etc etc. But what I must highlight is the opening statement before the title screen “A Final Fantasy for old fans and newcomers”. This FF really does strike a great balance to please the wider audience in the best way.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Final Fantasy 15 was a game I picked up via the PlayStation Now service. It also boasts the distinction that it is the first of the long-running series of games that have actually completed.

The story itself is fairly basic. It is about a soon-to-be king named Noctis going on an adventure with three of his best friends on a worldwide adventure. Along the way, you will face everything from foot soldiers to a mountain size monster. The world is vast and the number of things to do and people to see is nearly as big as the world itself is. You could easily clock in over 50-100 hours if you wanted to and still have things to do.

You can fish, hunt down monsters for bounties, play a few games, and order food. It also has a great ending to the game's story. One of the best of any game I have ever beaten.

Next to Final Fantasy 10 this may be one of the best games in its lineup.

I like to play with it every now and then, it's not a bad pastime. pity that the graphics pulled up on ps5, you can not go beyond 30 frames per second. Every now and then it turns into boring.

This is my first Final Fantasy game and I loved it. The story was sometimes a bit confusing but I still loved the story. The combat is on point and the Boss fights are amazing! Before I played this game I always thought that Final Fantasy was some kind of "Weeb Game" but I was absolutely wrong! I definitely recommend this game to everyone.

I loved the journey I took with this game.
Something very special, exciting, and yeah simple, but at the same time absolutely fantastic.

The charismatic villain, Ardyn Izunia, and his story of personal revenge.
And the truly beautiful and characteristic dungeons of the world, all different and all unique.

And this is already more than enough to recommend this fantastic game. But adding the great soundtrack and great gameplay, this has become a must.

FF 15 is a solid open world action r;pg ,re all great and give a sense of vastness that few other ffa have. Dial between the 4 main characters rocks . While the story is less profound than 6, 7 and 10, it is certainly less obtuse than the fact 5 FFs

Une belle aventure d'un groupe d'amis lié au sombre destin d'une nation.
Système de combat excellent. Personnages attachants.

This is one of the only games that had me hooked for days on end. In my writing I realize however my bias in liking this game so much, since it was my first Final Fantasy game, my first PS4 game, and my first modern AAA game title.

The PS1 era Final Fantasy titles remain amongst my favourite experiences in gaming and, while this latest entry in the series isn’t quite up to those standards, it’s certainly an improvement over some of the rather forgettable recent efforts.

The PS1 era Final Fantasy titles remain amongst my favourite experiences in gaming and, while this latest entry in the series isn’t quite up to those standards, it’s certainly an improvement over some of the rather forgettable recent efforts.
In terms of story the attempts to create a sort of “brotherhood” amongst the four main characters will help to give players more of an investment in their party than they perhaps did in Final Fantasy XII or XIII but, to be honest, the characters still aren’t as memorable as those from the PS1 days and the plot becomes a bit of a mess by the end. The open world itself certainly looks great but, outside of the enjoyable “monster hunting”, too many of the side quests are simple “fetch quests” and best just ignored. On a side note, and this is a criticism of open world games in general rather than Final Fantasy XV in particular, why do characters giving out side quests just stand in the same position for however long it takes you to get back to them? (One guy waited by his car in the middle of nowhere for 2 weeks until I brought him a repair kit to fix it!)

Those that have been following the series will know that it has increasingly moved away from traditional turn based combat, something which does seem to have split fans. Personally I don’t have a problem with updating the old school RPG combat (did anyone actually like random battles?) as long as what replaces it is good and the combat here is pretty enjoyable, arguably even bordering on excellent at times. It certainly takes a bit of getting used to but, once you get a handle on it, it does prove to be suitably deep with a large selection of weapons and special moves available to tackle the enemies which all have different strengths and weaknesses to counter. The only real issue for me in the end was that the camera was pretty poor at giving you a decent view of the action, especially when you’re fighting in more confined spaces or when you get surrounded by large groups of enemies, you can manually move the camera but getting it in the right place in the heat of battle isn’t exactly easy.

There are a few other issues, such as relatively long loading times when “fast travelling” or car journeys that require you to just sit and watch as a passenger for periods of up to 5 minutes, but these are minor annoyances rather than anything that completely spoil the game.

To sum everything up Final Fantasy XV is a good game that will appeal to most fans of the genre, thanks to a few design decisions and camera issues that affect any combat in confined spaces however, it falls short of being considered an all-time classic in the way that some of the earlier entries in the series are.

After so many years of development, Final Fantasy XV is not what I expected it to be. The universe is immense and beautiful and the characters are just fine. But the story is short and disappointing and the gameplay suffers from lack of depth. FFXV is a good game, but it can never bring the former glories back to the series.

Even as you reflect on the rarity of a blockbuster that's willing to take real risks, you'll be left with the uncomfortable realisation that ten years wasn't quite long enough, after all. Those jagged edges are, in the end, just a little too sharp. [Feb 2017, p.110]

Despite a divided feel, torn between what it was and what it plans to be, Final Fantasy XV has a lot to offer. If you're a diehard JRPG fan, then it's a positive sign that the series can cross over to a new format. And if you're just looking for an open world adventure, Final Fantasy XV certainly has that in spades, while doing just enough things differently to separate it from the likes of Dragon Age and Elder Scrolls.
