Its disappointing that I cannot use my speech skills as a non violent option, now it feels like violence is my only option and that I am forced to make tough choices one way or the other where previously I would have been able to talk my way out of it.

The ability to create and upgrade my own Armour and weapons is something that this series has needed for a while and the removal of weapon degradation is, at least in my opinion a welcome removal.

In terms of the create my own community, I didn't go any further than the game forced me to do as everything about this mechanic felt like a grind and tacked on, only there to get in the way of an already short and basic story.

The real pleasure of this game comes from the exploration and various missions in the fallout universe but these in themselves lacked the trademark fallout humor that this series is known for.

If I could change one thing it would be the pipboy interface, it is so annoying to jump into the pipboy screen only to see the screen flicker or wade through screens to get what I wanted.
Yes the pipboy is iconic to the series but seriously, there has to be a better way or a more updated interface than being forced to use this awful mechanic.

I will say that like most fallout games, you cannot really judge the game until you have all the DLC installed and play the game fresh and whilst right now fallout 4 may be a little bit of a let down, in twelve months or so this will be a much more fuller game.

I realize the dialogue system has been very watered down, and sometimes you don't even know what your character is going to say when you choose what to say. I agree that that aspect of the game was completely botched in Fallout 4.

I also realize that the new "workshop"aspect of the game that allows you to build communities, build structures, assign jobs, create supply lines, and create defenses is kind of pointless ultimately. It's just sort of there and sometimes the game's story even makes you develop these communities to advance the plot.

I also agree that the main storylines and the side quests are probably the weakest of the three open-world, first/third person Fallout games thus far.

BUT, but but but but but...

...To me this is still a good Fallout game. I feel like the shooting mechanics are the best they've ever been in the series. The slow-motion version of V.A.T.S. is even cooler than the version in F3, and F:NV.

The graphics are as good as they've ever been. For example, you can actually see the trees bending in the wind, there are radiation storms, and other subtle touches that make the world seem more "alive" in Fallout 4 compared to previous games. Also, unlike Fallout 3 or New Vegas, there is a dialogue camera that makes the conversations your character has seem a bit more.....dynamic.

It's a great game as far as I'm concerned. It's probably tied with The Witcher 3 as my favorite Ps4 game. I'll admit I'm totally biased when I give it a 9, but something about roaming the wastes in these games really appeals to me.

I like the solitude and I like having it shattered frequently.

While it is a different fallout experience, I think the game is very good. Combat is vastly improved and the world is fun to explore. The map isn't as restrictive as new vegas and modding has been expanded on tremendously. Also you can sprint.

Experienced a few bugs that made things nearly unplayable although after failing a certain quest the freezing during save glitch went away. Really wish that Bethesda put more money and time into fixing things before they shipped the game or at least patch things. It's a cool game but needs a lot of patching.

I gotta say, before I purchased Fallout 4 I was expecting and hoping it would be more of Fallout 3. What I got was not what I was hoping for. What I got was not what I was hoping for. That is not to say Fallout 4 is bad by any stretch of the imagination. I can't help but feel like Fallout 4 is a lazy way to make a Fallout game. The quests (pretty much from everyone you meet) are the same over, and over, and over again. Go here kill these ghouls, raiders, or super mutants. If not that then it's go here and get (insert weird piece of technology here). For the most part though, I enjoyed my time with Fallout 4 but not enough to do another play through. There is a lot more color now, so everything doesn't have that greenish brownish hue. I wasn't sure at the start if I liked that or not only because Fallout 3 really looked like several nuclear bombs went off, thus ensuring that apocalypse look and feel. The color is actually kinda nice. The gun play was also changed up a little bit making it a little less aggravating than previous titles, not to mention the addition of legendary weapons, and armor. Legendary armor more or less give you buffs to stats like intelligence, and charisma. Whereas legendary weapons add buffs like fire damage, or extra damage to specific types of enemies. Now about those dialogue choices. In my opinion dialogue choices in previous fallout games drastically effected how the game would play out. In Fallout 4 however, it felt as though I could either be nice as hell or a sarcastic nice as hell **** and it never REALLY changed the outcome. Sure, I could be kind of an **** and the character might not like me but they would still do the exact same thing if I was nice but instead have a good opinion of me. I didn't feel like there were any real consequences to any of my choices. That said, playing the same types of fetch or kill missions don't really give you a chance to be evil or good. If you are a long time Fallout fan I fear you may be a bit disappointed. If you haven't played any Fallout games and are looking to scratch that RPG itch, then you should definitely give it a shot at say 30 or 40 bucks, and get the DLC with it. Some of the DLC is better than the original game I think. Expand

The story is good. Very good with some nice plot twists but with a fairly disappointing ending.

This sounds cool but all the endings are 90% the same?? What the hell?? This doesn't make any sense.
It would be nice if there were 3 very different endings.

Graphics wise it's weak. I mean come one guys this game has like PS3 graphics.
I could justify the graphics if the game ran steady but it doesn't. In busy sections the frame-rate drops enormously and stutter begins. This is very annoying and takes the fun away when shooting.

The customization is AWESOME!! Enormous ammount of parts you can craft and use for your weapons/armor. The settlements are also very nice. Fun for the creative people but doesn't add much to the story.

There are also companions you can travel with. This adds life to your story. Without this the travels would be a bit boring. But this is something personal as others like to travel alone.

The overall feeling of this game was good but i just can't accept the fact that a huge developer like Bethesda uses an old engine with sloppy frame-rates.

There haven't been a single patch as today to fix these issues. I wil rate this a 6 now. A 7 when there is a patch.

Sticking to the missions can get a bit boring, the menus are somewhat confusing and the conversation choices don't seem to make much difference, but freeroaming around the wide open world and killing whatever crosses your path is so much fun! Especially if you are using the mods to craft better weapons and an armored suit, you are set to go and cause some mayhem oh yeah!

In the age of score bombing, aggregate user scores just become a giant tug of war, hence why I find it important to write a review.

First I want to address the hate this game has received and then talk about the game itself. People need to understand what "hype" does to expectations. Fallout is far from the only one to suffer from enormous hype, and it won't be the last. No game will ever live up to the hype. Some of people's favorite games as of late have come from new or previously unknown IP's that had very little hype surrounding them. While it may not be helped by the game developers and publishers, this is largely a monster of our own creation and kills enjoyment. Hype creates unreal expectations that cannot be met.

Secondly, I am ashamed by the actions of a large portion of the Fallout fan base. It is all well and good to dislike an entry in the series and to state it, and vote with your wallet. It is another entirely to troll and spew filth and bile onto anyone that even tries to express their like of this game. Seriously, the way people react borders on religious zealotry, and the great Todd Howard & Co. has desecrated what is apparently most sacred. It's a game people, and an insufficient reason to insult and demonize those who don't agree or who genuinely enjoy the game.

Third, to those that decry F4 for not being as groundbreaking as F3- what exactly was the expectation? To jack into the PS4 matrix style? Of course F3 was revolutionary compared to F2. You went from a dated, clunky isometric style game to a modern, engaging, cinematic first or third person shooter that kept the world and atmosphere from the original games. That was and is Bethesda's bread and butter, so why was there an expectation of a revolutionary F4? A more realistic outlook would recognize that evolutionary steps make more sense if the game formula already works.

Fourth, I would like to address the "good game, bad Fallout game" critique. It is one that is entirely subjective, because what may have attracted one to the series is not what attracted another. Therefore it is as valid as all other subjective qualities e.g. the music, ambiance, color palette. It all comes down to the crux of the whole issue which I will discuss in the game critique.

F4 is a game that was not afraid to do something new. It changed many, many things from its predecessors, many of which I would argue were great improvements, and some that were metaphorical "steps back". Overall, the changes implemented contribute to a fun, replayable game, albeit with shortcomings.

Graphically the game is, of course, better than any other Fallout. Compared to some of the best looking games of the past few years, it cannot compete. However, within fellow large open world games, it is above average. The real pitfalls appear to be textures and some of the lip-syncing and facial animations. In most cases they are merely "meh" but in fewer instances it is outright bad (like the texture on Virgi's mutant body). F4 suffered serious frame rate drops in city areas due to issues with shadowing. Patches have since fixed the issue and overall stability is lightyears ahead of previous games. My F3 and to a lesser extent my FNV games have reached a point of saturation that they stutter, freeze and crash to the point that it is barely playable. In contrast, in all of my playthroughs of F4, it has crashed 4 times and frozen for 4-5 seconds a dozen or so times. Speaking only for Playstation, this is hands down the most stable and least glitchy Fallout game to date.

Far too many changes were made to list and many of them were relatively minor, but solid changes. There are some instances of retconing, some of which seemed like simple oversight and others were changes made to improve game play. Just some solid examples of great changes are the armor and weapon crafting which is the most in depth to date, the appearance, function and customization of power armor and the vastly better combat.

The main story held me engaged and wanting to know what happens next, which is a good indication of a solid story. Side quests were numerous with some very memorable ones.

Some of the big and controversial changes have to do with the reduction of RPG elements in the game. It has become more of an open world game, that is undeniable. It is disingenuous to say that it has no RPG elements however. This is the crux of many issues, because for many Fallout is synonymous with RPG. That's why they see Fallout as losing a core part of itself and the rest is history. I am not a hardcore RPG'er, I do not create elaborate backstories and don't think the only way to build a character is with a point system. I enjoy exploration, replay ability, fun, engaging and humorous encounters that convey a complex story. All this in the F4's unique world and atmosphere is what makes a game "Fallout" to me.

If you're like me, F4 will be a fantastic game.

I picked up the game hesitant since I'm not a huge post apocalyptic fan, but I figured the story was good and depth/breadth would not be a concern. (I've heard some state the game has well over 150 hours of quests) Unfortunately, a number of factors left me feeling this was average at best.

Gunplay, outside of V.A.T.S. (think turn based system) it's almost impossible to hit anything. The aiming well and truly sucks.

Graphics are extremely dated given the next gen consoles capability, and it's just hard to spend hours on a game when things look dated and two dimensional. (The colour palette was debated but didn't overly concern me, it's a wasteland after all).

Finally, game breaking bugs rendered this extremely frustrating. An hour into the game I completed a quest which requires you to kill all hostiles in a town. I was unable to complete it due to a known bug which would not register completion once the town was clear. (Seriously almost the first important quest!?)

The above factors, for me unfortunately were enough to derail my enjoyment and interest.

Hardcore fans ofc will love the game since it has all the great elements of others in the series.

I looks as good as some areas of Half-Life 2). I'll admit that at times the world does look very good, and this is usually when the sun is setting or during a storm. Anyway, on to the positives; Bethesda are amazing at telling a story and making you feel that every decision you make will have an effect on where the story ends up, and that's because it will. This game certainly has no lack of content but it lacks challenge as long as you have any sort of armor and not a pipe pistol. The amount of content is made by how much of this you do: "General, we've just gotten word that another settlement needs our help" or "The commonwealth has no shortage of abominations when you're ready to go clear a place out just let me know" What I'm trying to say is the content gets repetitive and boring really quick. Although there still are a lot of cool things to do the sheer amount of simply clearing places out creates this sort of hole that it just can't get out of. This game did improve on how different all of the characters can be. The absence of skill points is something that I really enjoy. I think they should have done all previous fallout games and Skyrim. The perk system gives you a lot more customization options and finally you can get a character with all of the perks which sounds really awesome and I plan to do that.

TL;DR: Too much clearing places out not enough cool stuff. Perk system greatly improved.

I don't understand so many negative reviews, I don't rush the story on any fallout games, I mostly like to trek the world that Bethesda make and never use fast travel, and through out my Journey in fallout 4 something always happens, previous entries were quite barren and monochromatic, Fallout 4 adds a bit more juiciness to their universe, with different hues, many and many and many! locations to explore, and let me not begin to mention the settlement building, your life will be sucked, don't have a wife, or a girlfriend.

The BAD: Oh yeah there are a few, now I haven't finished the game yet, but so far Not the biggest of the dialogue system, it feels at times inconsistent, also not knowing what your character is going to say is a bit annoying. sometimes this breaks immersion for me, seeing that these characters are just code, and not actual humans. The story isn't that bad, I actually enjoy it more than 3, fallout 4 hits some high points in its story, no spoilers, but their is one character who cant be recruited as a companion, but had a way more interesting background than all your companions combined and the story highlights that. so much I believe there should a. War, War never changes, but has Fallout?

Fallout 4 looks amazing, everything from the lighting to the water effects just blows me away. The animations have been tightened up from the last game and help make the world around you feel alive. I have to say that I love seeing my character popping in holotapes to play them or climbing into a suit of power armour.

The apparel now works on a layer system, so you have a thin outfit and attach pieces of armour on top of that. I think the new system works very well and allows for a lot more diversity in gameplay as well as appearance. Power armour is now an item you are able to climb in and out of at will and makes you much stronger. The pay off for this is that you need to find fusion cores to power your suit. Fusion cores are just rare enough and offer a fantastic reason to explore the map.

Another new feature is the ability to build up your own settlements which will need defending and looking after. I think this is the thing I have spent the most time doing as I love to build up my own little safe spots. Town building requires you have junk to use as materials and this means you will be searching the wasteland for junk in order to build up your towns more. This is a fun feature and adds a whole new layer to the classic Fallout gameplay.

The last positive thing I want to mention is the fact that Fallout 4 allows you to be polyamorous and this is amazing. I love that this opens up the game for role-playing so much more, you can read my full opinion on this here.

I suppose now that I have made this game out to be Jesus it's time to talk about the bits I don't like.

My biggest issue with Fallout 4 is how your character's backstory stops you being able to role-play as well as earlier games. I wanted my character to be a polyamorous gay bad-ass but instead I was forced to mention my son and husband which I didn't care about. Bethesda please learn from Obsidian and give us a motivation but minimal history like in Fallout New Vegas.

The intro sets up the male character as an ex-soldier and the female as a lawyer but no matter if you play as male or female you will have experience and training with combat and power armour. I dislike this as it shows the designers expected you to play as the male lead which creates some plot holes if you play as female, which could have been easily avoided. I had hoped in 2016 I would not need to remind people that not all gamers are male.

I do love Fallout 4 and would recommend it however it has its flaws and is not the best Fallout game in my opinion.

    7 out of 10.

I've tried multiple times to get into this game, and the most I cared to get was about 20hrsin, and I really had to suck it up and grind through, I kept hoping if I just pushed through it would start to get interesting, it never happens. All the wit and charm of the previous fallout out games is missing. It's an RPG in only the most superficial sense, almost as an after thought. All the wit and charm of the previous fallout out games is missing. It's an RPG in only the most superficial sense, almost as an after thought. The story makes no attempt to keep you engaged and the missions do nothing to drive the story forward and are extremely repetitive. They mostly consist of fetch quests and go here and kill the raider/mutants/synths. NPC's are totally forgettable and undeveloped. Technically it's fine, except for the bugs and dated graphics, which would be totally forgivable if the game had any sort of depth or heart. If you play about 5 hrs of this game, you seen it all. Find a building, shoot everything there, loot all the stuff, become over encumbered, go back to your base, repeat ad nausea. I think people who loved the Star Wars prequels or Jurassic World will enjoy this game. Expand

A strong return for the franchise, boasting incredible customisation, a fascinating world and brutal yet brainy shooting, slightly tarnished by lacklustre AI and tedious inventory management. [Christmas 2015, p.88]

Feral Ghoul ugly in many ways, but beneath its iffy exterior beats the heart of one helluva great RPG. Get past the graphics deficiency, and the sheer thrill of Fallout 4’s combat, crafting options, and exploring will hold your attention for months. [January 2015, p64]

Fallout 4 leans to the Shooting side of things. It strips down the gameplay from the actual RPG elements and offers a meta-nuclaer shooting gallery which of course keep its charm and gameplay wealth but also feels a little too friendly for the new comers. The Base builder mode is unnecessary, boring and irritating. Unfortunately, overall, there are no steps forward for this Nuclear Holocaust Behemoth of the video games industry. Only steps sideways.
