Never cared for ID's multiplayer (Quake 3 Arena was good), but with Doom...it was never a thing so it would be covered in this mini review. The game is flat out awesome. Playing on MAX setting at 1440p (ultrawide) on PC...oh man, wouldn't want it any other way. Fast, gory, and in your face action is what we have needed for DECADES! My game of the year!

I purchased Doom with a certain amount of reluctance. As with any remake of a classic, fan-favourite, game Doom had a lot to live up to and, after the abomination that was Doom 3, you could hardly blame me.

Doom does not do cut-scenes; it does not need to pad itself out with stunning cinematics to lengthen it's story and detract from the gameplay.

From the moment the game starts you are up to your eyes with undead and demons alike. Near the story of my journey I found myself wondering whether this constant flow over enemies attempting to wash over me would get tiresome. It didn't. It got more entertaining, more intense, and, in some cases, more hilarious.

Visually the game looks fantastic; from the lighting and environment effects, to the general feel of the environments you're in.

The sound effects are brilliant, thought I concede my least favourite is when I'm too caught up n the action and a noise sounds to alert me to my dangerously low health.

Gameplay-wise, it just feels like someone has taken my beloved childhood game and brought up to the visual standards of 2016, with a few querky extras along the way.

It has to be, hands down, one of the best FPS games I have played in a long time.

Every weapon is perfectly balanced in terms of output, making your choice of weapon more situational than simply because it's overpowered. The exception being the BFG, ofcourse.

The story is subtle. I fully understand what's going on at all times, and I'm interested to learn more as the game progresses, but it does not force you to watch cut-scene upon cut-scene.

The multiplayer is an intense assortment of game modes, most of which you'll have experienced in other multiplayer online games. The balancing of the guns translates to the multiplayer, meaning every gun has its own pros and cons, without there being one clear winner. Though you can never go wrong with shotgun.

Doom's interesting spin on your tactical throwing items is incredibly fun to play around with. We still have the classic Frag grenade, but you can also enjoy a personal teleporter, tesla greande, siphon grenade, energy shield wall, and more!

There is nothing funnier than throwing your personal teleporter over an enemy combatants head, as you face them in head to head combat, only to appear behind them and unload a double barrel into their spine.

Oh, and did i mention Demons? A demon buff will spawn every pre-fixed amount of time throughout a round and the first person to read said buff becomes the demon they have selected for their current loadout. If you're fortunate/quicker enough to become the demon try to avoid being killed, if the enemy kills you before the buff expires naturally they can pick it up and then terrorise you for a short period.

So in summary; Doom has far exceed any initial expectations I had for the game. I bought it without any real conviction but it has kept me enticed since I started playing. If, like me, you're tired of the same COD-style shooters that we seem to be inundated with, get Doom. It's not all that often I enjoy both multiplayer and campaign.

Oh, and it has a chainsaw.

If your looking for a movie or a nice sweet little story, this game is not for you. DOOM's graphics top anything else, sounds and music are perfect and it is so much fun. Can't get tired of blood and gore so the ''repetitive'' argument does not apply to me.

The multiplayer isn't the greatest in the world however the campaign and snap map feature (which by the way, I haven't seen anything like it on consoles) are awesome.

I spent hours and hours into snap map making my own maps along with game modes to go along with it. Snap map is cool, and you can create whatever is possible within a shooter franchise. Examples : I played whack a mole with a shotgun along with tower defense games 4 person co op. I'm currently making my own campaign and leaving some secrets out there for players to find. Snap map is cross platform so everyone can enjoy.

For the second portion of this review, is the campaign, it's gotta be the most refreshing FPS campaign I've played in awhile. Examples : Doom Guy doesn't give a ****, an AI is being serious to him and he smashes it without a care in the world. Meltdown imminent? he doesn't care he's there to kill demons until he dies along with him. Total immersive experience the campaign is and I recommend it to anyone bored with the usual in the gaming industry. Really addictive game play to boot.

As for the Multiplayer, it isn't the greatest in the world but it is a lot of fun with friends, I have more fun with it than CoD if you want an idea of how it is. It's 6v6 and has powerups, pickups (Ammo, Armor, Health) Demon Runes (which turn you into a demon) These you pick up and can give your team a massive advantage, however if he gets killed the killer takes on the reins of the demon himself.

It is interesting and I hope iD Software gives it more attention and makes it more fun. This is the granddaddy of all shooters after all and it deserves the number 1 spot when it comes to innovation in FPS. Conclusion: Multiplayer is the only thing dragging the game down, which even then it's all just gravy compared to it's Snap map and campaign. Those two alone are worth the price of admission. Snap Map has endless content for all to enjoy and it's a worthwhile choice if you're looking for something new.

This style of gameplay stays true to the original games from the 90's yet fits so well to the modern times. The campaign's story is pretty straight forward but unimpressive. Go here, kill demons,, activiate this, rinse and repeat. But the great gameplay makes you forget about the story.

As for the multiplayer, they definitely fixed the balancing issues since the beta. Every kills/deaths are fair and will motivate you to keep playing. Doom offers traditional modes such as TDM, Capture the objective, and soul hunt (which is Doom's version of kill confirmed), but adds their unique modes such as freeze tag.The hack modules customization are endless, and just about covers anyone's style

Finally, let's talk about Doom snapmap. There are endless choices here. You can use your imagination to create new maps and game modes. The best part is once you have created something, it can be shared with the rest of the community in your platform. I have already seen some interesting ones from maps made of classic 16-bit textures to a intense survival mode.

In conclusion, DOOM is a solid fps that truly has its own unique nature to be different from other games while staying true to the originals, but it lacks a good story in campaign

The time to Fight Like Hell has finally arrived, and it came with a bang. Doom is a return to basics shooter, and it shows us exactly how to reboot a franchise while maintaining all the fundamentals it was built upon in the first place.

I can’t express enough the excitement I’ve experienced while playing through the Single Player Campaign for Doom. Doom pulls no punches and it delivers on an excessively violent and gory level. It manages to keep that horror film vibe, and while there isn’t a lot of tension when it comes to a scare factor, the fight for your own survival is what keeps your heart pounding. Doom continues throughout to relentlessly throw hordes of demons your way, not giving you an opportunity to slow down. However, there are key points in the game where you must think on your feet, because once you stop is when you die. I’m not going to go into the story at all, as I really want everyone to experience it for themselves. It’s not the most exciting story out there, but it works as far as Doom is concerned. ‘Id Software’ made it a point to show that gameplay is what matters this time. With each new weapon that I obtained, I began to feel more powerful. I tried to combine the use of multiple weapons throughout each level and it worked very well to my advantage. The ability to seamlessly switch between one weapon to another feels as smooth as butter and was obviously a great design choice.

This game really goes out of its way to make you feel like the ultimate bad ass, and with each new weapon and upgrade, your frag count is sure to be staggering. As you progress, there are tons of secrets to be found, and to be honest, I missed quite a lot of them. Most of these secret areas allow you to upgrade either your health, armor, or your ammo capacity; or some allow you to gather an upgrade point for your weapons. The best part about all of this is that none of it is required to finish the game. It’ll make your life hell through your time spent in the game, but… that’s the point, right?

Let’s go into the multiplayer. There isn’t a whole lot to be said here about the multiplayer; especially if you’ve played pretty much any Call of Duty title out there. You level up, you earn different armor, and weapons and demons are locked behind that ugly “Level Wall”. Doom’s multiplayer really feels like Call of Duty with a Doom Paint-Job. That’s not to say that it’s not fun, or just plain bad; We’ve just all been there before.

One example is that with old school arena shooters, we’re used to finding weapons lying about the map we’re fighting on. Not this time. This time we’re forced to go by the dreaded “Loadout” style, and pick two weapons to play with, and one type of grenade. It’s not a horrible way to go about this, but that takes away the title of “Arena Shooter” and replaces it with “Arcade Shooter”, or...once again... “Call of Duty Shooter”. Now, I won’t sit here and tell you that I’m not having a blast with the multiplayer, because I am. I just wish it was a little more old school.

However, what it lacks, it makes up for in speed. Doom’s multiplayer is extremely fast paced, which is part of what defined the arena shooter back in the day. Doom, Quake, and even Unreal Tournament were all apart of this at one point. Let’s hope it stays that way for future multiplayer shooters.

So let’s move on to the final feature of the game. SnapMap. This mode allows you to design your own maps, more specifically, what type of game you create with that map. SnapMap allows you to make everything from DeathMatch to Extraction (Missions) to Survival. It’s a very intuitive tool that let’s you very easily create things you couldn’t before. I like to call it “Map Editor for Dummies”. There are tutorials that teach you everything you need to know to create the perfect masterpiece.

I have just one problem with this extensive feature. Everything you create, you have to play in SnapMap mode. I want to be able to make a map, and release it to the community to play in Multiplayer! I don’t quite understand the logic behind id Software’s choice here, but I have a strong feeling that eventually SnapMap will die out. My suggestion would be that they allow, at the very least, the ability to release maps according to the modes available in Multiplayer. If that doesn’t happen, I don’t see SnapMap last very long. It’s an amazing feature that almost seems pointless.

So here we are with a new Doom, and a new era of horror shooters. This total reboot shows exactly what made id Software the top dogs of their time, and that they’re still able to pull off something amazing. With the single player being the shining star, the multiplayer being a decent addition, and SnapMap which may or may not break itself, we have one very cool, and complete game. I recommend Doom to anyone a fan of shooters or not.

Level design, while maybe not as intricate as doom 1/2 at the time of their respective releases, is relatively intricate compared to the modern linear corridor shooter. Secrets galore and alternate paths through environments. Well-paced gameplay, modernized classic doom enemies you actually have to put some thought into how you want to tackle. Plus they add quite a bit to the doom formula to innovate on things, like some genuinely interesting boss mechanics and alternate fire modes on weapons (and multiple other upgrade systems that tie into exploration of the level).

Story-wise it doesn't take itself seriously and goes for a tongue-in-cheek vibe that I'm sure most classic Doom fans will enjoy, much more than the brooding atmospheric doom 3.

Nonetheless, the multiplayer is still not doing much for me and feels very formulaic. Snapmap might be interesting, but I'll have to wait and see as players build levels using that in-game tool.

The campaign though carries enough content and replayability via secrets and easter eggs that I can see myself going back time and again just for that. Needless to say this is a must-play for anyone who is dying for an evolution on single-player fps gameplay.

You are a killing machine and the only thing between you and the end of the game is a billion little demons just waiting to be turned into a fine red mist or a lovely red goo.

Every area is a new playground of murder. Every zone is another chance to go head to head with some of the biggest, baddest demons around, rip their eyes out of their heads, and shove them down their throats. It's over the the top Glory Kills REALLY drive the "feel" of the game home. The faster you kill, the more recklessly you play, the more your rewarded, not just with showers of health (and later armor), but also in spectacular death animations that just don't get old.

All this and it's FULL of well hidden and fun to find secrets, an intuitive yet interesting weapon/armor upgrade system, remade retro levels to find and murder your way through, and one of the most well optimized, bug free experiences I've had from an AAA title maybe ever.

This game is worth every penny for the campaign mode alone, and then there's the SnapMap feature which I hear is already turning out some quality content. And multiplayer, if that's your thing (it's not mine...but I don't mind at all cause the single player is so good).

So if your idea of a great time is crouching behind waist-high walls and waiting for health to regen while the enemy ineffectually attempts to shoot you from long range, look elsewhere. But if your idea of a good time is wandering into the wrong part of Hell and tearing every single resident apart with your bare hands till you're wading in the gore, than yeah, buy this game now.

Let me start by saying this review is solely in regards to the multiplayer aspect of this title. My time with the campaign has been limited and quite frankly, I didn't make the purchase to play through the story even though reviews of it have been mostly positive.

Doom's Multiplayer is actually a bit challenging to critique. When broken down component by component, you will find there are some aspects that seem to be lacking that extra something to take it from a good title to a great title. With that being said, collectively the multiplayer experience is quite enjoyable even if at the end of the day it is somewhat basic when compared to other online shooters of this generation. In actuality it may be that simplicity that makes Doom such a blast to play online. Users aren't stuck endlessly customizing their load outs for every possible map and scenario, or caught up in needless weapon upgrade menus deciding which minuscule item to add to their rifle, the user simply hops in and begins to cause as much carnage as possible.
The gameplay, while not exactly being top tier in regards to physics/mechanics, runs surprisingly smooth considering the sheer amount of craziness taking place at any given moment. What do I mean by craziness? To put it simply, Doom's beauty is in its chaos. Whether you're in an object based game, or playing good old fashion team deathmatch, there will never be a shortage of flat out destruction taking place all around you.
This is partially due to your weapon options. While being somewhat limited in selection, Doom's guns are definitely one of its strong points. From rocket launchers to mortar converting shotguns, players have enough options to create load outs that can range from an up close and personal game style to a more balanced mid range attack class. Perhaps the best thing about these weapons is the fact that players can select any two they want for their load out. There are no distinctions between a "primary" or "secondary" weapons. What does this mean? It means gone are the days of running out of ammo and having to run around with your little pistol between your legs, don't worry you have a second weapon that can be just as powerful as your first.

The game's maps also add to the fast paced style of play. Utilizing relatively small and close quarter designs with a good level of verticality gives players instant access to the action yet allows just enough space for multiple playing styles. Add in super weapon and demon spawns and you are left with a world where there is little escaping Doom's high level of violence, sorry campers.

When it comes to customization, you're really only going skin deep however this is not a bad thing. With an insane amount of armor options, and the color/pattern schemes that can be altered, users can be confident that no two players (at least aesthetically) will be alike. Loadout customization is as straight forward as it gets, pick two guns and one piece of gear and go. Not too much intricacy here, and there doesn't have to be.

Overall Doom's multiplayer experience is straight forward and perfect for anyone who enjoys fast paced online shooters. With never relenting action and violence, this game offers a good option to anyone looking to bulster their FPS collection.

Doom 3, for better or worse, tried to evolve Doom and after Wolfenstein TNO I hoped Doom 4 would follow its example. That did not happen.

This Doom is pretty much 100% a retread of the original Doom formula and thats great if that is what your just looking for in Doom, but I expected more after nearly 10 years of waiting since Doom 3.

Still a great game, but definitely a solid 8/10.

Hopefully, Id will take more risks next time.

Side note, please dont buy the season pass, its just for multiplayer dlc. The multiplayer is ok, but definitely not worthy of a season pass for $39.99...

It seems to be catching some unjust flak for not playing like a COD game, but...IT ISNT COD! It is more of a fast paced "arcade" type shooter. Jumping, circle strafing and aggression are key. something that i feel like many players have lost in the one shot kill, or quickscope kill method too many people have adopted or come to expect from modern shooters. Little touches like familiar sounds and the red boxes for ammo just bring back nostalgia by the bucket load.

I wasn't sure how I would like the Glory Kill system but believe me, when you start using it, it'll be your preferred method of killing - seeing how the monsters are ripped apart by your own bare hands, managing to get some health along the way.

A few frame-rate issues to date and a little tearing here and there, which you barely notice as you combat the hordes of monsters running towards you. I have also tried multiplayer but it's early days and there was severe lag. I'm hoping this is improved with time (much like PS4's DriveClub) but early impressions are good - it's a no-frills old-school multiplayer game, just this time over the internet rather than serial-to-serial on PC in 1993.

It's been said this game will mostly attract fans of the original DOOM and DOOM II and that's probably true, but if you want a 'no thinking just shoot' wrapped up with gorgeous graphics and gameplay, buy it!

In point of fact, DooM takes everything from the old school and invigorates it with some things from the new; there's no reloading, sprinting (the standard speed for the DooM Marine is approx. 50mph) or ADS, less a few weapon mods. The gore is there, rip and tear through enemies as though they were paper bags filled with ketchup. The glory kill system is actually very good and rewards you with bonus health for getting up close and personal and this can be a lifeline on harder modes, the same goes for the chainsaw; a one hit kill wonder that makes enemies spew ammo. The soundtrack is insane, top quality Industrial metal that gets heavier and heavier the further into the game and really makes the demon arena battles feel spot on, it's just a shame that it stops when the floor is littered with all the bodies. The updated demon designs are perfect, based clearly on the old ones the new HD models are great, with a few demons having slightly different behaviour and attack styles and the DooM marine modelling is perfect as well. The new stuff, in the form of mods and runes put a dynamic spin on the gameplay and let you tailor your experience to suit. the lore is there but is optional, personally I enjoyed the added reading, it was interesting. Secrets are there and extend the experience by enticing you to search high and low for goodies. Overall the campaign experience is a fun, gore filled experience, ultra violence is partially easy but nightmare is another level of insanity. Boss fights were disappointing however. the arenas themselves are a blast and can be played again and again and never quite be the same, with the mobility and plat forming you'll be dip, dodging and diving between demons whilst trying not to die and make them die.
Snapmap is great and allows for endless, often hilarious concepts to be envisioned.
For me the multiplayer is great, there are several weapon balancing issues and yes, it isn't a full on arena style setup. There are load outs and things like that but being someone who has never really played an arena multiplayer before and who is a black ops 1/2/3 veteran, this game suits me fine and I seem to have little to no issue dominating people. The power ups, power weapons and demons allow for dynamic shifts in the state of play, it's all fun and games being the dominant team with a baron of hell to have an enemy player show and kill all 6 of you with this BFG he found laying around. (I know some people won't agree with this multiplayer review and be aware that if I'd been an experienced arena player this may be different)
Overall, a nostalgic and cracking experience from id software, very well done, can't wait for the next one..?

Although, this game focuses on gameplay to make its experience superb. Now is the experience superb? No. But it's pretty great in my opinion. The graphics are stunning, and so is the world. There will be many moments where you just stop, and look at the scenery around you. THAT is what hell looks like. There are many enemies, therefore you use different tactics to defeat each one, so you will find yourself thinking and playing a lot more strategic than you may expect. The missions have great structure. There are many secrets in each mission that may leave you coming back to play the missions 2-3 times to find all of them. And after you do that, the multiplayer in Doom is great! It's very fluid and it feels natural, and it's extremely enjoyable. Maybe not to the level of Call of Duty or Battlefield in terms of multiplayer, but it is a great experience. The snapmap maker feature is also very welcomed, it is extremely intuitive and user friendly. It is enjoyable to make your own maps, and some people have already made some pretty incredible things. Now, you shouldn't be buying Doom for the multiplayer though. This is a Doom game, and it does a great job at solidifying that, it doesn't really take anything from the popular FPS's as of late, it stays true to itself, and it shows, and succeeds at doing so. Now, this game does exactly what you would want it to do, or expect it to do. The weapons are amazing as well, and you can customize them, along with your Praetor suit which is your armor. You can also customize the colors of your armor and weapons in multiplayer. This game is great. I'm not giving it a 10 though, because it is not a masterpiece, but I am giving it a 9, because you literally cannot want more from a Doom game. I don't see how anyone can give this game anything less than an 8/10. Expand

Its upgrade and customization system is a nice touch, which gives a fairly long 15 hour campaign of constant mindless violence a bit more depth. I'm not saying mindless violence in the game is bad, I think the mindless action is tons of fun and addictive and their aren't many games that offer it, and is a nice breath of fresh air. Its just always nice to add extra content to make gameplay more interesting. You can upgrade armor and customize weapons. With armor you upgrade health, armor, and separate from that you can upgrade ammo capacity. The biggest part is weapon customization which add a useful secondary fire which also can be upgraded. There's also a perk like system where you complete challenges to earn perks that give you special abilitys. The enemies are very fast and fun to fight. The AI is pretty straight forward; spawn in a big group, run after him as fast as you can, move from his attacks, and hit him or shoot at him till he's dead. I had no problems with the AI at all because I feel its perfect for the kind of game it is. The reason is that these are demons from hell who are without any real human emotion, so thats why theyll kill till they die, and thats why they spawn in hordes. The gameplay is ment for fast instant combat without cover, and if the enemies ran away or hid behind cover when low on health it'll get rid of the flow of the game. It has a story thats kind of their, which I'm completely fine with because the original Dooms have never really had much at all an in depth campaign story. Doom has always been about crazy action and violence. What I got from the story is that it's mysterious, strange, and at times disturbing. Its honestly telling more of a backstory of how it all happened, mostly though holograms of key events and environmental story telling.

Even though Doom has most things right, their are some little flaws. With the weapons, theres a balanceing problem. I tend to almost always use the super shotgun, and I feel you get it a bit to early in the game so any other weapon you are useing at the begaining felt a bit useless. The other shotgun in the game, the combat shot gun is a bit too underpowered and even upgradeing it doesn't do much even after immediately finishing the early game levels. The super shotgun doesnt even have much to upgrade because of how O.P it already is. Even the rocket luncher is no much for the super shotgun. Even though balance is a bit of a problem, different weapons have different advantages. The super shotgun is the best at close quarter combat, the rocket launcher is best at range combat, the plasma and machine guns are best at very fast sweeping combat, which is basicly just constantly shooting like crazy at groups of enemies. After doing the same glory kills the hole game it gets really repetitve and less satisfying but its a great way to get health and can speed up gameplay through perk like upgrades. That may have seemed like a lot of very negative stuff but their two very minor things you dont notice much.

But I have to be honest, I have not touched the multiplayer portion of this game and based on what I have read it is not the reason to purchase this title. It certainly was not for me so that is why I am focusing on the campaign only. And what a campaign it is! Firstly the graphics. Wow . I am playing on the PS4 on a Sony 4K TV and this game is jaw dropping. The textures, lighting and particle effects are all some of the best I have seen this generation. The game runs in full 1080p( though my television does upscale the image to 4K) at a consistent 60 frames per second which is an unbelievable feat considering the graphical fidelity on display here. For anyone familiar with this series and arena style shooters in general, the decision to provide a consistent 60 frames is highly appreciated. The art design is also top notch. The weapon models are exceptional as are the environments which range from space station corridors, sprawling areas on the surface of Mars with lots of verticality as well as dreadfully beautiful locales in the depths of Hell. The game’s aesthetic is reminiscent of old heavy metal album covers and it is all very very cool. The creature designs are also fantastic. There is a large variety from small grunt like demons who pepper you from a distance with hellfire balls to enormous demons with surgically attached machine gun arms. Very heavy metal indeed! The enemy AI is good. Foes are very aggressive and keep you on your toes. The game is fairly challenging at medium difficulty and downright Dark Soulsesque at the higher difficulty settings. The sound design does not take a backseat to the visuals. The game is powered by a driving heavy metal soundtrack which increases in intensity as the on screen action ramps up. Guns sound great and all of the ambient noises are top notch as well. Most importantly the gameplay delivers on every level. This is Doom. The speed of the game is the biggest factor here and it immediately sets Doom apart from any other shooter on the market. This game is fast. But the buttery smooth controls ensure that you have control over that speed at all times. This game is all about movement. Tactical concepts such as taking cover, regenerating your health, and picking your enemies off one by one will get you killed in Doom. Constant movement, good aim and an itchy trigger finger are your only methods of survival on Mars and in Hell. Movement is always a joy however, thanks to fantastic controls and a climbing system designed to navigate the environment with ease. Doom also introduces a Glory Kill system which consists of staggering an enemy with gunfire and then getting in close for a brutal melee kill. Since Doom sticks to its old school roots it does not feature regenerating health. Instead Glory Kills provide you with a small health burst for every enemy taken down in that fashion and it adds a great tactical aspect to the shooting formula and I found it to be a relatively small but very welcome addition. But this is Doom as you remember it and also what you imagined it would be like in 2016. In terms of story its completely serviceable. The gates of hell are accidentally opened on a remote research facility on the surface of Mars and it’s up to Doomguy to put his jet powered space marine boot up Satan’s behind. War and Peace this is not but if anyone wanted a super intricate story line complete with branching story paths and dialogue options simply does not understand what Doom is all about. You are here to kill demons and kill demons you do. In glorious fashion! Doom also includes a very user friendly SnapMap feature which allows users to create a variety of multiplayer, single player and co-op content which adds a lot of value and replayability since there is always something new to play. This game is an absolute blast. It is highly polished, infectiously addictive and I cannot put it down. I know many review sites have really knocked down the score because the multiplayer is not great but if you are interested in Doom for all of the right reasons I would highly recommend this title. So let's just say I know what's up. Now the best part of this game for so far is the fluidity of the environments and the gameplay as it pertains to 60 FPS. Never have I actually noticed that a framerate mattered until this game, cuz basically I didn't care. From Atari to NES to SNES and so on a good game is a good game. But this silk soaked in vaseline contraceptive motion awesomeness is freaking obvious right out of the gate. It never slows down no matter how many fireballs are being thrown at you or how many times you jump from platform to platform running for your life. Hint...RUN! Just do it. Don't think or plot or look around much cuz...DEAD that's what you will be. It's say, 50% faster than Destiny...well maybe it's the music making me feel that way. HOLY CRAP the MUSIC! The music is almost the best part of this whole game...it's atmospheric and pounding like a KISS concert on crack. I started out on the hardest difficulty but then switched down a level because I felt I was missing the graphics and music because I was too busy RUNNING! Gonna switch back tonight I think, now that I have the lay of the land.

Now the reason I gave it a 9 is because there is not character creation...and I don't need an extravagant one. I have a 14 yr old daughter who likes to game and I get annoyed that you can't be a girl. And let's be real, a girl holding a chainsaw screaming at you would be damn petrifying!

Unless I am completely addicted looking at you bloodborne . I like to think things over let the review marinate and really think about it . I'm older I'm married and I have children I have a crazy job etc as I'm sure most of us do . I'll sit down with a title a couple of hours at a time and start to form my review . Also if you've read any of my reviews I'm an old guy compared to you whippersnappers so I like to give my personal experience and backstory with storied franchises . This may come off as fanboyism but all I'm trying to do is convey how special a title is if it is still relevant today . Games mean different things to different people as well as the memories associated with them .

In 1985 we lived on the south side of Chicago I quickly became friends with the kid across the street and we quickly became best friends . He also introduced me to the wonderful world of gaming . In 1992 my buddy moved to the suburbs . Not really that far but when you're a kid ..... Anyway once in awhile I would still go over to his house and we'd hang out play games whatever . In 1993 I went to visit and in his room he had a gateway pc with sound card and shareware version of something called doom . Now being used to new and sega consoles this was my first experience with both a pc and a pc game .

I was wowed the sound the enemies the guns and the gore and the environment . It was total sensory overload for me and blew me away . I loved the game as well as doom 2 and final doom . This game is the daddy of all first person shooters yes wolfenstein came before it but this was the one that captivated kids parents clergy and politicians alike there was simply nothing else like it and there wouldn't be for a long time until last Friday .

Upon booting up the game and selecting nightmare difficulty I was tossed into the fray . Within 10 seconds I was in combat strafing running and wait just what the hell is this jumping ?. I felt a little turned off . I ran through the first 3 maps using only a measly handgun . I was starting to lose faith it just didn't feel like doom . Then it all clicked for me . I started getting those old feelings again and adapted my playstyle accordingly . Next thing I know I'm surrounded by a multitude of demons all pining for my marine flesh or to turn my spleen into a sock puppet . The weapons start booming the music kicks in and the death rattles echo .

Make know mistake doom is dumb . There's no social commentary about violence or religion or child soldiers . Nope just shotguns and putting a moonroof in some big baddies face . Run kill demons rinse and repeat . I have heard this game called smart . Not a word I would use to describe gameplay but in terms of design ?. Doom is a Rhodes Scholar . I admit I was worried but the designers did their homework . From enemies to weapons to movement this is doom . Then when you discover things like the classic doom maps hidden within levels just sends the nostalgia factor through the roof . Most people grin when they see the bfg . Not me I grin when after 20 years I'm seeing the very best old doom levels and just how much they impacted game design . Dooms level design to designers is like Casablanca ro film buffs it's just timeless and totally relevant even today .

Doom could have did the stupid thing and tried to reinvent the wheel . Nope they took everything that made doom great giving it a modern aesthetic while still retaining its classic roots . Doom isn't willing to compromise its vision of what they want this franchise to be and that is so rare and refreshing in this day . The sound level design enemies and weapon animations are fantastic . I'm not a frames per second stickler and quite frankly I'd prefer that it run just a little slower so that my ps4 doesn't do its best imitation of a f-18 leaving the flight deck of an aircraft carrier . It's smooth fast and it rarely stutters but it will send your fan into overdrive . Playing in a 60 degree room with 2 fans cooking the console I could still hear the fan OVER a turtle beach headset so I wouldn't reccomend extended play sessions . None of that takes away from the game though .

Id could have played it safe and made this a game full of modern concessions . The glory kills for example highlight enemies in a blue orangeish hue after they have been staggered . This prompts you to preform a brutal melee glory kill that also replenishes health and sometimes ammo . In short this is the doom you've been waiting for . Oh and my best friend ?. Lives across the street again and tonight we are going to Slay some demons just like in 93 . Funny how things come full circle isn't it ?.

If you're on the fence about this game, don't be! I'd never played a Doom game before and am officially a fan!

I was originally hesitant because there didn't appear to be any story and I'm typically of the camp that if the game doesn't have a story then it's not worth my time & gameplay looked repetitive in the sense "go to this area, clear out enemies....now do the same over here"

Doom focuses so much on gameplay, level design & atmosphere that you almost don't notice that the story is minimal and you are just going from area to area introducing demons to your shotgun. They do this with fast, frenzied gunplay & challenging the way you approach combat. Each section of the game gives you "challenges" which task you to take out enemies a certain way or explore your surroundings in order to gain points for upgrading your armor & guns.

This game is a breath of fresh air! Regenerating health? Nope. Reloading...yeah no! But finding yourself in pinch with little to no ammo as a Hell Knight bears down on you only to be cut down by your chainsaw so that he spills ammo to keep you in the fight just that much longer....oh hell yes!

Multiplayer is ultra fun to play! There is just this amaizing amount of good decisions (Get all weapons very early through the MP/ No set back after Echelon). The game is full with plenty of these smart decisions imo and what looks first as a simple brainless shooter is very well thought through when you look close.

Game soundtrack is brutal, interesting gameplay, weapons and variety of enemies satisfactory, but over time can become a little boring by the lack of variety of finishes or even little diverse scenario, but it's a great game. The weakest part is multiplayer mode, you will surely play some matches and leave aside this feature of the game.

Literally giving it a zero not because of the quality of the game or work of developers, but because of the actions of the publisher.

Whatever. I could rant about people who are mad because it's not "Doom 3 Part 2", and because it's not what they expected they're emotionally rating and giving a zero score ("because if it's not what I expected, then NOTHING can be good about it!") but I won't bother. Here's my review of the campaign. I'll be honest - I was sure this game would be terrible when I saw the first in-game footage. I was wrong.

    What it does best:

The action is the #1 main attraction of DOOM, and once you accept this game for what it is (not DOOM 3, not a horror game), you'll thoroughly enjoy each encounter. Understand what this game's goal is; intensity. DOOM is at its best when you're in a large room surrounded by a horde of hungry demons. The action is viceral, and the glory kill system provides a great risk/reward mechanic. You're always outnumbered and your health depletes fast, but glory killing a foe provides a moderate amount of health just when you think you're done for (think rally from Bloodborne). The guns and the upgrade system are very well designed. Performing unique and creative feats with your weapons allows you to unlock their top tier upgrades, forcing you to experiment with the entire arsenal so you're not just playing through the entire campaign with your one favorite weapon. The level design, secrets, and unlockables are all masterfully well done. The controls are also very well tuned.

    What it does well:

At first, I didn't like the speed of the game. However, when the game started introducing larger firefights, I began to like it more. That said, the speed is great fun when you're in the middle of a firefight, but not so great when you're moving through the many tight corridors of DOOM.

The graphics are also very very good - some of the best on PS4 - but, it might be kinda hard to take in the sights and appreciate the soft shadows and subsurface scattering when you're literally moving at 30mph through the environments. Regardless, the graphics are great and my playthrough seemed locked at 60FPS consistently.

One major point that ID deserves kudos for is allowing FOV adjustments from the settings menu. As someone who gets motion sick from many FPS games, this is a godsend. Thank you.

    Where it can improve:

The music tends to pick up when a firefight begins. Sometimes the music is good, but most times it's pretty bad. I listen to quite a bit of metal and I've rarely heard such discordant industrial mess. Bring back the music from DOOM3 that was so clearly taken from Lateralus/Tool. :)

I played the game on ultra violence (hard) the first time and didn't find it difficult enough. Therefore, I'm assuming the standard difficulty is way too easy.

Last, and this is my own personal preference; I felt that the creatures were very well designed, but they seemed a bit too "comicy" (think Joe Madureira but not quite so exaggerated). I would've preferred more realistic looking demons; regardless, they look cool.

    SUMMARY:

DOOM 3 had an amazing and horrifying atmosphere, but this new DOOM trades that for more enjoyable gameplay. This is more fun than DOOM 3. It's a game for gamers. 9/10.

Man is this game good. It has the right amount of difficulty and just the right amount of mindless shooting to keep me coming back for more. This game is exactly what I expected it would be, and that is amazing. Dying in this game is fun, because then you can map out a new strategy to take on the demons, exactly the way I felt when I was playing the first 2 games.

I'm writing a quick review based on my first few hours of gameplay in campaign mode only. If you're thinking about buying this game, maybe this information will help you decide.

First, let's cut the crap. This game is not a 9 or 10, nor is it a 1 or 2. I'm giving it a 7 for the reasons listed below.

This is a reboot of the original DooM, nothing more and nothing less. If you were expecting something that plays like DooM 3, please adjust your expectations. This game is fast paced, the enemies are numerous, and you must sustain yourself by picking up the ammo and life items the enemies drop when you kill them. Again, just like the original DooM of yore. You also pick up key cards and look for hidden caches. Nothing new here for veterans of DooM.

If I were to compare this to other games, it is a mix of original DooM, DooM 3 (in the graphics, atmosphere, and sound department) and Space Marine. The combat gives you plenty of choices, but the funnest option is to set up your "Glory kills" with your guns. That is, you stun the enemy with a gun shot, then finish them with your R3 button at closer range. Combat is fluid and it works, in my opinion.

Here is what the game does not have:
    Aiming down the sights
    Cut scenes
    Very much dialogue

All of which is a plus for me, not a minus. If you like "cinematic" games like The Last of Us, this game is probably not for you. If you like games like DooM 1 and 2, Half Life, and Metroid, this game is probably for you. I've always considered long dialogues and cut scenes in video games to be a waste of my time. I like the story to be told by exploring the game world and playing the game.

Whether or not you want to wait for a price drop (or skip this altogether) depends on how much you loved (or did not love) the run and gun style of older shooters.

Again, I have not dipped my toes into multi player yet. That could alter my review and if it does I'll update this review

The systems they implemented in this game played out fairly well, you are encouraged to constantly keep moving forward with the glory kill system. It punishes conventional fps tactics of 'popping from behind cover, shoot, return to cover', you'll run out of ammo/health in no time doing this.

One of the biggest pros for ID is the engine. Few devs release such a smooth, great looking game for PC upon release these days. Also even fewer have an engine that can handle above 60fps.

Really the game is only engaging on Ultra-Violent or above, I think most people would get bored with the game if it didn't present a challenge. It's also designed for a specific market, and I don't think they'll get the multiplayer audience they were intending. Still a great single player though.

DOOM is everything I want in a FPS game. It is fast paced, challenging, and just pure chaotic fun. Even on Normal difficulty, there were times where, I'm not ashamed to say, I died and would have to be a little bit more strategic concerning when to pick up armor, health, or power-up abilities that are placed around the map in order to win the battle. The weapon upgrade system puts a fun twist on the game, making it a challenge to master all of the weapons abilities before the end of the game. The multiplayer is classic arena gameplay, bringing back the classic fast paced action that so many arena style players have been begging for. If you like the multiplayer from the old Halo games , I would definitely give this a try. The multiplayer needs an actual leaderboard system, but other than that it is pretty solid. This game is a fresh breathe of air into the kind of stale and repetitive FPS genre. Whether it be collecting hidden collectables, mastering your weapon's abilities, and kicking trash on single player with intense glory kills, or kicking it back and playing a casual game of chaotic arena style multiplayer, DOOM is a game I am going to see myself playing for a long time. SnapMap is very interesting where you can create your own maps and game modes to enhance you DOOM experience while sharing your work to others and playing it with your friends or load up someone's else masterpiece to have a go at it.

DOOM is a must buy and is a great example of how far we've been. (You can play the original DOOM maps with pixels in its nostalgic glory!)

It may not achieve Game of the Year but it deserves a place to be nominated as one.

It was great going to hell once again and fighting hordes of enemies, beating them down with their arms, hands and sawing them apart with excitement! This reboot brought my passion back and made me feel just as sick as I did in my early days. I have found some bugs (UAC, At one part while standing at the bottom of a cliff, going for a glory kill and literally fell through the map.) Other annoyances are melees; sometimes the dang AI moves and you are left spinning around to try and figure out where they went.

All and all, I give it a solid 9.5. It is fun to play, especially with the Guide, (making sure no items are left unclaimed) I'll be back in hell later tonight, hope to see you all there with me.

The graphics and sound are both off the charts. id tech 6 is visually stunning, competing only with the new Unreal Engine 4. The soundtrack is unbelievable, going from creepy atmospheric tones to metal depending on the action. Best sound and graphics I've seen in a game to date.

Got very tiresome after a while. Controls are a bit off. They feel very fluid but a little floaty with no sprint button. Can you believe that? It's tough to navigate around some of the faster moving demons and the stupid small sections they throw you in to fight them. They should have added sprint and some open area levels to make full use of the weapons because most enemies just rush you all the time.

Visually it's superb like some of the UAC facility levels, weapons, few enemy designs (revenant, the undead and cacodemon being the only ones that stood out), and slick menu presentation. Loading times are ridiculous. Audio is hit and miss. Sound effects are good but some of the gun sounds and explosions are weak. Had to crank my volume a little bit. They nailed the music which is constantly there sometimes subtlety or full force.

A sequel or DLC needs to add more variety (Phobos and Deimos?) because it was overall missing something I can't quite put my finger on? It badly needed something fresh because it all felt too mundane. That's not to say it sucks. It was a blast to play but too arcade-ish for me. Worth a rental or pick it up when it drops to $20.

This is essentially Doom I and II brought into modern gaming, and by modern gaming, I really only mean 3D, because that is where all the similarities to modern FPS games end.
This is not your standard corridor FPS game. This is nothing like Battlefield, Call of Duty, or Halo (Though its closer to Halo than the others). You are not a soldier going through a poorly written war story. There is no political intrigue. There are no Michael Bay-esque set pieces to move the game along. In Doom, there is only the player and a seemingly endless horde of demons to shoot down, hack apart, or stomp through.

If you summed up gameplay in one word, it would be "kinetic", but "violent" can also work. Very much like in I and II, you will find yourself constantly moving, whether it is from one end of the map to the other or simply circle strafing a big bad demon. The fun fluid combat is only amplified by the game's emphasis on verticality. You can now jump and double jump all across the map. And trust me, it feels amazing to be jumping like a mad man across chasms and climbing up ledges during combat.
The Glory Kill system is also amazing. When I first heard about it, I was skeptical about whether or not it was a good feature or not, but boy was I wrong. The kill animations are short and sweet, and uber violent. Much to my surprise, they did not mess with the combat's momentum, and they felt very natural, even when done in the middle of heavy combat.
Health and ammo are plentiful. Unlike iys predecessors, you won't be hunting down ammo and health packs. Upon death, enemies often drop small health bonuses. That may make the game seem to easy, but it doesn't do that. It often seems like a godsend in arenas that have dozens of higher level demons clawing, blasting and bashing you from every direction. When enemies are killed via chainsaw they drop copious amounts of ammo, like a bloody piñata.
Weapons are comprised of all the tried and true Doom classics. This time though, the chainsaw is a limited use weapon that requires gas as ammo and insta-kills demons. Hidden in the maps are drones that give you a weapon mod. You can upgrade mods with points earned in combat and via challenges. The mods aren't varied, but they make combat even funner. Elite Guard corpses can also be found, letting you upgrade the Praetor Combat Suit. Runes can be found, that give you new powers.

The story is nothing to write home about, but then again, Doom was never a story driven game. You are a man (practically a demi god) who kills demons. If you come expecting something deep and thought provoking, look elsewhere.

The music is amazing. The sound us amazing. The graphics are amazing (comparing to PS4 releases). Levels are well crafted. Area designs are great, but it could have done with more variety.

Multiplayer is the only downside. I only played a few rounds before I switched it back to the campaign.

Judge this game by the campaign alone, and it is phenomenal. Truly refreshing throwback to old school arcade FPS games that weren't there to ham fist cheesy cliched campaigns down you're throat.
