There were no doubts that Doom would play fast, look stunning, or be gory; the surprise is that Doom is as relevant, smart and self-aware as it is; merging old ideas with new ones; injecting its near-flawless shooter mechanics into a campaign that’s impeccably refined, hilariously dumb and fiendishly moreish.

Doom is the best possible way to play, in 2016, something that was great in 1993. Unmissable.

DOOM is hands-down one of the best reimagined and exciting FPS games this generation.

The multiplayer aside, the true appeal to the game remains in the single-player campaign, which is how it was and should be with a DOOM title.

Look past the lop-sided multiplayer, and Doom is still one helluva reboot. It’s a must for any modern FPS fan looking to taste the ultra-violence of yesteryear. Your Nana will hate it. [August 2016, p71]

Combat may become a little tedious after long stretches of play, the load times are a little lengthy, multiplayer is a smudge unbalanced, and SnapMap is a so-so addition, but the adrenaline-fueled gameplay and the ample replayability featured within the campaign makes this a standout entry in the FPS genre – let alone a worthwhile resurrection of DOOM.

People will be talking about the first two Doom games for decades more – those two games may well be remembered as true classics of the gaming medium a century down the track. This Doom won’t. This new Doom is terrible...Like the greedy organisation that unleashes hell on Mars, this is the product of exploitation; the developers at ID Software and Bethesda are playing with fire in treating a property as valuable as Doom this way.

But for me Doom did same thing to PFS as Dark Souls did to action RPGs. (In a possitive way). It is not afraid to be very challenging. At the same time is fair all the time and gives you oportunity to avoid every enemy attack.it gives you very well ballanced tools that you need to use wiselly (chainsaw, bfg, powerups, glory kills). Every death (even on harder difficulties is you mistake). And the thrill and feeling when you finish difficult fight is same as when you beat DS Boss. Expand

A delicate and graceful dance of gore and death. As someone who more often than not gravitates towards stealth missions, turtling, andA delicate and graceful dance of gore and death. As someone who more often than not gravitates towards stealth missions, turtling, and tactical plays, Doom is not that type of game. Doom wants you to arrive at the end of the level, covered in guts, by sparing naught even a hellish underling. It is a very structured FPS at heart, but not sacrificing fun and personability. Armed with an extensive arsenal of weapons, you choose how you go about eviscerating, dismembering, or exploding demons in your permissive rage-filled steroidal man child tantrum. Choose a constant stream of plasma to eat holes through a Hell Baron, a well-timed rocket launcher blast for a triple kill of Imps, or remove a pesky Mancubus by resorting to chainsaw seppuku. The game is fun from front to back: one constant joy ride of a power trip.

Gameplay is truly where the game excelled in my opinion. It is just darn fun to shoot. As God of War (2018) mastered the feeling of using the Leviathan axe, I genuinely felt powerful in Doom (2016). Any individual non-boss monster can be dispatched with ease, once the technique and machinery are obtained. The challenge lies in balancing the methods necessary once a single enemy spawns into a murderous multitude. No enemy is a bullet sponge, but thinking straight in a bullet storm is the challenge. In addition, no weapon feels unnecessary once another is unlocked, but each successive gun feels like a ladder rung towards domination and freedom of skill in the arena. A welcome surprise, never have thought I would enjoy not having to reload. Reflexively in the opening moments, I would press square to reload, not used to each weapon being a bottomless clip. While your total ammo reserve will certainly deplete, ammo is never too far off if clever. This streamlining serves to fuel the game to be faster and focus on what is fun, shooting.

The story did not rank as high for me. It was not as compelling as others, but the characters were oh so cool. I wanted to keep moving forward just to hear another monologue from Samuel Hayden, the game's cybernetic deuteragonist. Doom Slayer is hilarious as well. In a current climate where games, meant to be fun, are forced to play serious roles and convey "meaning," Doom Slayer repeatedly breaks free from the voice telling him what to do. It's a welcome change.

    Great game. 8/10.
