Great graphics, Great gameplay, blood, guns, demons, no story. It is a Doom game. If you are looking for anything else you will be disappointed. Everything is updated for modern times but the original formula is there. Have not tried multiplayer yet, but if it is any good it will be icing on the cake. If you are playing s game for multiplayer try call of duty.

Also nice to have finally 60fps and 1080p on consoles in a top game. Also great to have a game without the needless story telling that has become standard in modern games. If you come up with a story with the quality of Witcher 3 than a story is worth telling. But most games and shooters dont get close to such a high level. So than skip the entire story telling. I dont want to watch the needless movies that only interrupt gameplay. I think Bethesda really did a great job here. Graphics are great. Gameplay is great. And I also liked the diffculty levels. I grew up as a PC gamer with keyboard and mouse. This was my first shooter with a controller. But the low difficult setting is perfect. Difficult enough to be challenging. But not so difficult that I want the mouse back. Perfect balance. Like any game DOOM des have negative points. But they are small. Forst of all the gameplay is sometimes interrupted by seeking way to long to enter new environments or find keys. Especially in a game like this that downgrades the gameplay. And the background music of the game could have been much better. The game could also have a more fear in it.. But the addictive fast shooting experience eliminates th negative aspects. Bethesda did a good job here. Better than I expected to be honest. Expand

With all these reviews about the "frenetic gameplay", I'm wondering if they played the same game as I. There are *periods* of frenetic firefights, bursts of rapid run-and-gun killing, but then there's also long stretches of boring hallway walking with only a handful of enemies around. Exploration is a snoozefest and, outside of the BFG, most of the weapons are simply unremarkable. You WILL get tired of Glory Kills before you're done with the first chapter and yet, when playing on Ultra-Violent, constantly performing them is a necessity (for health and the like), thus devolving into a constant shoot-stun-glory kill routine over and over for the duration of the game. The campaign is painfully short; with finding about 70% of the collectibles, beating the game took only 10 hours, and far too much of that was spent looking at loading screens. Campaign is also lacking in spirit - looking back I can't really identify as single "holy s**t, did you see that?!" moments. Graphically the game is neither good nor bad. It, too, is average. I guess the best compliment I can give it is that it runs smooth most of the time with only the very rare frame drop during hectic sequences.

With little reason to replay the campaign, I turned to multiplayer. What I found there is a tacked on mess of a game that won't appeal to many over the long term. There's nothing in multiplayer to distinguish Doom from the myriad of other sci-fi shooters in the genre. It will likely keep some players for a week or so but they'll go back to their FPS's of choice very soon.

The shining gem of this reboot is Snapmap - the gory version of Super Mario Maker for Doomheads, if you will. This is what will ultimately give Doom any sort of longevity but the problem is waiting for a decent variety and amount of levels to become available through the community. Right now, being new, Snapmap is only good for those people who want to dabble around with level design.

The game is a solid rental but not worth the $60 price of ownership UNLESS you're hardcore into building levels through Snapmap. The best (and worst) of the campaign can be seen through a two day Redbox rental and multiplayer is best left to other games. I'd recommend waiting to buy it until it's cheaper and the community has had time to learn the Snapmap functions and create a decent amount of user based levels.

Doom 3, for better or worse, tried to evolve Doom and after Wolfenstein TNO I hoped Doom 4 would follow its example. That did not happen.

This Doom is pretty much 100% a retread of the original Doom formula and thats great if that is what your just looking for in Doom, but I expected more after nearly 10 years of waiting since Doom 3.

Still a great game, but definitely a solid 8/10.

Hopefully, Id will take more risks next time.

Side note, please dont buy the season pass, its just for multiplayer dlc. The multiplayer is ok, but definitely not worthy of a season pass for $39.99...

Doom 2016 understands the most important thing about videogames: fun. And what does it do that makes it so fun to play?: GAMEPLAY. The controls on this game are PERFECT. They respond so precisely, so quick, they feel so natural. Doom 2016 does not care about the modern standarization of FPS's, there is no such thing as a regenerating health: if you want to recover HP, you need to find medipacks spread across the map, or man up and defeat your enemies for a health drop. Cornering away and shooting enemies from afar will not get you far in this game, specially on the later stages, where the amount of enemies on screen is RIDICULOUS, and not a single frame drop on my whole playthrough.

Also, the chainsaw: an insta kill (on limited amounts, of course) to any enemy. When cut in half with the chainsaw, enemies drop ammunition, so your carnage of lead and bullets continues, this balance between insane amounts of action and shooting never stops, and even if you run out of ammo, with a simple cut of the chainsaw the action goes on, giving this shooter an unstopable pace, no moment feels dull or boring, its action from beggining to end, not even the story makes a halt to the fun experience: as it almost non existant: the plot may very well be resumed like this: the gates of hell are open, demons sprawl on mars, go ahead and kill them all. That's it: there's almost nothing to spoil, nothing to tell, and it feels so refreshing.

I just cant stress enough how good and fun of a shoter Doom 2016 is, and if you're fan of the FPS genre, you own yourself to play this.

It's crazy and hectic but absolutely fun. I haven't had this much joy playing a shooter in over 15 years. The visuals have a unique art direction, but the soundtrack is the true winner here - absolutely memorable making your heart-beat at every match-up. The only negative side is that the multiplayer is unbalanced and feels like an afterthought. I would have preferred some kind of campaign co-op instead. Overall: Doom is everything I would love from a shooter that gives nostalgia its name in the best possible way. Expand

I found myself collecting upgrade tokens and then not really caring how I spent them on the suit. There could have been at least a few regular cutscenes too, to make the storyline a bit more inspiring.

I haven't played the original Doom, so can't compare, but if you like first person shooters then the chances are you'll enjoy this one a lot.

However, after a few decades of shooters, the shooting for the sake of shooting isn’t enough anymore. Doom (2016) does little more than drop enemies into the area, require the player to kill all of them, and then open a path to rinse and repeat. Some games have a relentless momentum like Halo: CE to Reach. In this games, you and decide strategically how to deal with enemies or blast past them if you want to. Even in a grindfest like Destiny, you can find the fastest path. Not so in Doom. You have to run and gun in small arenas until all the enemies are dead. Only then can you proceed.

Storywise, the game has little. I did appreciate the story being told from the 1st person perspective like Half-Life. I just want more story. Maybe I want more personality. There are no sense of stakes and no one to care about. Everything takes place on Mars or in Hell. So what if Mars becomes a gateway to Hell? The demons don’t have spaceships. Can’t the humans just nuke them?

All in all, Doom (2016) is a polished game that offers some fun, old school gameplay. I would have liked to have seen more from it, but I appreciate the effort that Bethesda put into what they offered. The game is on the high side of 7.

Besides shooting, the game also has some platforming and exploring. The levels are very well put together, so jumping around and exploring every corner not only adds playtime, but it is fun as well. I didn't find even half of the secrets (maybe like 30% secrets, 10% collectibles), but it still was satisfying whenever I found one.

The music also compliments the game well. It is metal and gives more agency to the fights.

The game does have some flaws though. First off, there were some glitches, specifically when enemies don't spawn. This forced me to reload my game twice. Secondly, the game struggles in long play sessions. It gets a bit too repetitive, especially in the second half when there are less new enemies, locations and guns. And finally, the multiplayer is fun but nothing special.

Honestly, the only minor complaints I have, have nothing to do with the core game (which is the single-player campaign):
    1. The classic maps, once unlocked can only be played separately - so you don't keep your progression from one map to the next. And also you cannot save during a map, so get ready to be raped by Pinky demons in tight corridors a lot.
    2. Multiplayer tries to borrow some elements from 'modern' multiplayer games, such as weapon load-out with 2 pre-selected weapons. And you cannot pick new weapons during the match, unlike the old-school multiplayer matches
    3. Snap-map does not seem to have the support they initially intended, like proper matchmaking and map-ranking, etc... which is bad because it is an awesome tool!

An almost perfect game, which EVERYONE should experience.

Good reboot of the doom games. Captures the combat intensity of the classic games but brings the series up to speed with modern mechanics and technology. Upgrading equipment is a lot of fun. Combat can get a bit tedious since there isn't much to break up the shooting aspect of the game. I also wish there were more narrow spaces and hallways like the original games had.

I started out not really liking it though cos I wasnt used to the Glory Kill and ammo/life/armor pickup system of old. So used to health regen that I forgot my 90s roots! Also, I kinda rushed from mission 1-5 at first and that made the game felt easy and pointless.

My opinion and experience changed however when it slowly grew on me and I did a new playthrough, but this time paying close attention to everything the game has to offer.

If u want the best Doom 2016 experience, TAKE YOUR TIME (ironically since it's so fast paced), and EXPLORE. The mission challenges, weapon upgrade challenges, rune upgrade challenges improves the gunplay to PERFECTION.

Those optional mechanics made me feel the huge variety of gameplay and gunplay Doom has on offer, and it isnt just a game of point and shoot. The challenges made me vary my playstyle and using every single gun, not just shotgunning my way through. This resulted in the most fun i've had in an FPS since Destiny.

Second thing I loved about Doom is the Secrets. I had fun hunting down every single mission collectible and secret locations. Its also rewarding as it gives u early access to powerful guns, much needed ammo/armor, extra lore, classic playable Doom maps and fun mini collectibles. Very satisfying and rewarding.

Bosses are super cool, I had an amazing time beating them at "Hurt Me Plenty" difficulty. I cant imagine going thru all that in Ultimate nightmare. Insane!

All in all, Doom 2016 delivered an experience so visceral, fun, simple yet engaging, that this has to be my shooter of the year for 2016.

Destiny still ranks as top dog in my list, but wow is Doom a close second.

(pun intended) The campaign runs around 8 - 10 hrs and with rune challenges and actual classic DOOM levels ( there is even a match 3 DOOM game in the game...) it will beef it up quite a bit. Expand

DOOM has one of, if the not the best first person shooter campaign I have ever played. With incredibly addictive gameplay, amazing presentation, and exceptional level design, paired with nearly endless additional content via snapmap and a solid multiplayer, DOOM is well worth it's price tag.

    Campaign:
    Pros:
    - Excellent level design. Intricate, sprawling maps stuffed to the brim with hidden secrets and kill arenas make return visits almost inevitable and completely enjoyable.
    - Fast, furious and fully satisfying combat. Challenging (playing on hard) while still making the player feel empowered. Watching enemies explode like blood squirting ammo and health pinatas is endlessly fun
    - Graphically and artistically excellent. This is the first game in ages I actually cherished unlocking the enemy models - everything in this game, from the weapons to the demons to environments themselves, look incredible
    - Pulse pounding music. From the opening menu to the end of the game, I was constantly bobbing my head along to the awesome soundtrack. Getting to hear the end-level music was one of the most satisfying parts of completing a stage
    - The codex is hilarious and well worth reading. Adds a lot to the lore.
    - A well defined world, loaded with backstory, weaving an excellent lore

    Mixed
    - The story is laughable and weak, but does enough to move you along without questionging
    - While the handful of NPCs are well voiced, they lack character and are forgettable

    Cons:
    - Nothing detracted from my single player experience.

    Snapmap:
    Pros:
    - Add tons of life after the campaign
    - Gives a massive amount of tools to create your own in depth levels and campaigns
    - In depth tutorials are very informative and helpful

    Cons:
    - Actually creating a solid map is incredibly time consuming and overwhelming

    Multiplayer:
    Pros:
    - A large number of unique and ingenuitive game modes
    - Plenty of maps
    - In the good game modes, action in frenetic and focused.
    - Playing as a demon never gets old
    - Huge amount of customization options

    Cons:
    - The old school modes do not work well here. The maps are too big for undirected modes such as team deathmatch. Objective-based only.
    - Far too limited weapon selection
    - Progression is limited to skins after the initial unlocks. There is little to keep working towards once you've unlokced the weapons and demons (which doesn't take long). Added the ability to unlock and mix and match secondary fires would've added a lot of longevity to the mode.

Available on Amazon now for under $20, DOOM provides an amazing campaign and nearly endless content between creative Snapmap additions and a solid multiplayer experience. An absolute must buy.

Picking up health and armor and constantly running at demons and then destroying them never gets old. They always introduce a new weapon or new mechanic to keep things interesting. The focus here is completely on game play and it works. The story was interesting while simplistic which was fine but even though doom is not a story based game i wanted a little more. The boss fights where amazing and so was the platforming which paces the game very well until the third act where you basically just keep shooting demons. The campaign should not be missed but the multiplayer while fun at times was way too modernized and generic. The other features however like the SnapMap and arcade mode are a lot of fun and give the game more replay value. It also helps this game looks amazing and has a phenomenal art direction and design. And don't even get me started on that amazing heavy metal soundtrack. This game is an instant classic and something all other shooters should take example of. Expand

Then as time went on and negative reviews were pouring out from the beta review's and hands on copies, I was more then a little nervous and almost considered canceling my preorder. Well I'm glad I didn't as this is "Classic Doom" with all the bells and whistles that we are now accustomed to and even more. The graphics are amazing and the gameplay is extremely fast and it runs without a hitch on the PS4. The guns are powerful and sound amazing, all the classics are present and a bunch of new ones to boot with mixed results but mostly satisfying. The monsters and demons look great and have allot of detail; they are usually easy fodder but can sneak up on you and in some instances will provide a challenge with above average AI. Of course there are still traps present like in previous renditions and lots of Easter eggs to find. You will also find upgrades lying around throughout the map for your armor and guns. Speaking of the map that is one area that is lacking to say the least, It isn't the most user friendly and the blue and gray coloring can be hard to read. So honestly the only thing in the game that will slow you down is the map, I spent almost 2 minutes the first time I tried to figure out where I was trying to get to. I'm not going to speak on the multiplayer experience as I haven't gotten to it yet but honestly the main attraction here is the Campaign and always has been with Doom. Playing this latest game is absolutely nostalgic for me, but not in just wanting it to be a fantastic game, but rather how stellar it turned out to be. The music is incredibly bass-y, shakes my entire room, and pulls me right in. The combat is very arena style: you go into a new area, there's a handful of resident enemies in there that are typically fairly simple to clear out. Then you trigger the waves upon waves of enemies and this will make you go from weapon to weapon to weapon, picking what makes sense for that second before swapping again. This is not a game to creep about like Doom 3 was, you will be punished harshly for doing so as your HP and ammo comes primarily from "glory kills" which require you to quickly get in melee range and perform a killing blow. The bigger the enemy, the less time is given making it risky sometimes.

All the classic enemies and weapons are back (not sure if any of the bosses are exceptions to that yet), and much of the old mechanics have been brought along too (looking at you keycards... my god you hide well sometimes) and they dropped all the things from Doom 3 that people despised: no flashlight, no oxygen meter, no jump scares, no more small scale fights. I personally enjoyed Doom 3 a great deal when it first released, but it was not what I could consider to be the Doom franchise should be.

The amazing thing is how well it runs. I am able to run 80FPS at 1440p on a single (though highly OC'd and watercooled) GTX 980 and it just begs for more.

DOOM is back. As a love letter to the original series, it's perfect. Combat is fast and frenetic, with a heavily emphasis on mobility and item resourcefulness. There is no regenerating health and no hiding behind cover, but you have access to a full weapon wheel as compensation. It's all complemented by excellent level design which inspires a ton of exploration on the part of the player, and there's a lot to find in exploring (new weapons, upgrade tokens, and collectibles). On top of all of that, each level is accompanied by unique challenges and even time trials, with rewards for completing each. These rewards, along with most of the game's collectible secrets, go towards customizing the way you play (ex:// speeding up gameplay or providing you with more resources), and the way you upgrade your character actually matters; there are upsides and downsides to specializing along a certain path. What you end up with is a highly replayable campaign.
What really sets DOOM apart from other shooters on the market is this: it's all about the shooting. The atmosphere is stellar, but never becomes intrusive thanks to a lack of the in-your-face, dramatic bravado that plagues the majority of modern shooters. The story is good for what it is, and what it should be - it provides an interesting enough justification for the chaos (just don't expect the narrative complexity of, say, The Last of Us). Ultimately, the game's tone is incredibly consistent. It wants you to have fun and revel in the ultraviolence, and that's what the original DOOM wanted for us back in 1993. Whether you're new to the series or a veteran like myself, the game has a ton to offer.

The game is solid, the campaign is old school on purpose,(and yeah repetitive) but it's fun as hell, fast paced, and very refreshing. It's full of pure demon killing goodness, not much story, or boring cut scenes, just good old great GAME PLAY. I am having the most fun though with the multiplayer. DOOM muliplayer. is something I am really enjoying in the same way I enjoyed Quake 3 back in the day. .The pace is perfect, levels are well designed, armor and health pickups everywhere just like oldschool times, and it just feels FUN to play, not frustrating like battlefield or Call of Duty, just FUN! ... I understand the criticism that this game may be "too much" like the old school fps genre, and I think SOME modern improvements to certain things would have helped, but would have been hard to do without screwing up the whole "oldschool" feel. The people giving this game a 0 just to bring down the score need to be stopped. For that reason I will give it a 10, but in all honesty, I think it's a solid 8 Expand

After playing through the campaign and putting some time into the multiplayer and Snap Map features, I have to say I am thoroughly impressed. Bethesda and id stayed true to the nature of the past DOOM's with the chaotic and adrenaline pumping action. This game has a huge replay value. I will be putting many more hours into this game.

The multiplayer is not the greatest. It is very comparable to halo in the mechanics of movement and shooting. There are some unique aspects brought in with the hack mods that give you an edge at times. It is fun to play but it isn't hard to tell that the main reason to play this game is the campaign. I usually play multiplayer or snap map when I want to take a break from the campaign.

Snap map is fantastic. I would compare this to halo's forge, though this is much more universal and user friendly. There are MANY different game modes, not all include combat. Some are puzzles, music makers, parkour, races. There are also the co-op matchmaking survival maps. This part of the game has some serious potential.

If you enjoy intense, chaotic, adrenaline pumping games with gore and some SERIOUSLY BAD ASS melee kills, you will love this game. Do yourself a favor and buy it.

BAD : Basic problem is why do we need energy from hell ? Other then that Thee is story in the game, hell portal is open and you have to close it, About the characters you have to read codex to know about them which is boring, also in couple of missions there is boring platforming like "scale up the tower" and i fell of the ledge 3-4 times and died, i ain't fan of the concept of the game And the loading screens are longer then i like.

GOOD : Overall very satisfying fast pace shooter, bad-ass enemies, variety of guns which can be upgrade with out a problem, two type of mods can be attached to most of the weapons, weapon and suite / character up-gradation is fun and really excellent shooting which shadowed all other thing i dint like

The level design is masterfully done, with tons of hidden secrets in every level, even some hidden old school gems. A lot of the levels have an arena-like look/feel, and when the music picks up it pumps your blood as you blast demons in the face with your double barrel shotgun.
The gameplay is fast, visceral, satisfyingly brutal, and very fun.
There was only a few times I wanted to pull my hair out due to a hard area or boss (yes, technically there is a boss every once in a while), however it made want to keep trying. There were sometimes I reloaded a checkpoint from dying and found some secrets I had missed along the way. You also have upgrades to your weapons and armor, as well as mods in the form of Runes. These all can adjust to your play style.
The SnapMap is a nice addition. You can create your own maps, add whatever kind of mode you want, or play some of the more popular maps done by players or the developers from ID.
The multiplayer is fun, reminds me of oldschool doom/Quake back in the day. However, my main draw point was the campaign and SnapMap, so I may be overlooking some things in Multiplayer.
The game runs very smooth. I had Motion blur off and FOV turned up all of the way, and never saw any screen tearing, slow-down, or crashes.
If you are looking for a good return to the oldschool fun formula of yesteryear, this is the game for you. If you love blasting demons in the face whilst jamming to an awesome soundtrack, this is also for you.
This is easily a must-buy for all Demon Slayers out there.

When you have the story and beauty of games such as Uncharted 4 and Dark Souls 3 (both amazing games btw), it's hard to release a dated concept. The gaming scene has massively changed even since when Doom 3 was released.

The systems they implemented in this game played out fairly well, you are encouraged to constantly keep moving forward with the glory kill system. It punishes conventional fps tactics of 'popping from behind cover, shoot, return to cover', you'll run out of ammo/health in no time doing this.

One of the biggest pros for ID is the engine. Few devs release such a smooth, great looking game for PC upon release these days. Also even fewer have an engine that can handle above 60fps.

Really the game is only engaging on Ultra-Violent or above, I think most people would get bored with the game if it didn't present a challenge. It's also designed for a specific market, and I don't think they'll get the multiplayer audience they were intending. Still a great single player though.

I've been anticipating this game for years, since I'm a huge Doom fan. The results were not disappointing. Could it have been better and have the potential to be the perfect Doom game? Perhaps...

The multiplayer was great, but the loadouts limited itself from becoming an incredible arena multiplayer game, (since everyone is now sick of CoD). I love the fact that you can use the demons in multiplayer. It makes the multiplayer a lot more intense and unique, but just like everyone else who complained about the beta, the demons are overpowered. Here is an example: The Revenant is actually fair to fight if your out in an open area, but if your running through a hallway and it pops out of nowhere and takes one shot at you.. you're dead. How is that even remotely fair? But as I said before, for the long run, multiplayer great. It still feels like a classic arena shooter with new perks added. It's brutal, fast, and fun!

The campaign was beyond amazing! The game play honestly exceeded my expectations, it's so much fun! Now Doom (for the most part) is all about metal music and fast pace action with blood and gore flying in the air. The game does an amazing job delivering that, but it's also about being terrifying, and the game doesn't deliver that. The original game was fast pace and intense, but was also terrifying and disturbing. The new Doom isn't scary at all, but I'd rather have all out intense action over survival horror (we're looking at you Doom 3). That's honestly my only complaint with the campaign, I'm extremely satisfied with it. It feels like the original Doom, and yet feels like a FPS that no one has ever played before.

Snap map is a great perk added to the game, but it wasn't as good as Id software said it was. It's very easy to use and you can customize the logic of the game, which I absolutely love about it! Only real complaint is that all the map structures are only UAC based, not hell and mars based. Wish you would've been able to create geographical features for the mars surface and would have hell themed structures. (It's kind of unfair that I'm criticizing this, since I've only created one map and there are like only two games that actually have this feature. But I felt like I had to throw in my two cents into this.)

Here's the summery of the review

    Pros +
    Fast-pace and brutal game play
Glory kills are the cherry on top of the fantastic game play
Enemies look awesome and fight brutally
    Boss fights are surprisingly great
No cut scene bull crap, and yet tells a really neat story
    Mission secrets
    Beautiful graphics
UAC and Hell textures look classic and goregeous
Multiplayer game play is an arena shooter throw back
Multiplayer modes are fun and unique
Multiplayer Demons are fun to play as
Awesome slection of weapons for campaign and multiplayer
Snapmap is very easy to use
    Change logics in Snapmap
Huge catalog of options in Snapmap

    Cons -
    Multiplayer loadouts
    Demons are overpowered in multiplayer
Not as scary as previous Doom games
Soundtrack sounds more electronic than metal
    No geometric editing in Snapmap
No hell themed structures in Snapmap

I know it sounds like I'm hating on a lot of things in this game, but I'm not at all, I'm just picking out every single flaw I found in the game to show you guys what you possibly wouldn't like about the game. The game is absolutely amazing! It's the game I've always wanted, the Doom I've always wanted! If you're a Doom fan, this is a must-buy. If you want to try out a new, and very different kind of game, highly recommend this. If you're sick of all the CoD games, please get this!

An utterly brilliant homage to the old school FPS. This is quintessential Doom, updated for the modern times without forgetting what it is and where it came from. Kinetic, visceral, and impactful, DOOM delivers a delightful punch to the teeth to remind audiences what a shooter is supposed to be.

In DOOM, game-play comes 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. And by game-play I mean gun-play and by gun-play I mean HOLY HELL these are some fantastic weapons! Shooting is fast-paced and fun. Strafing, circling, closing in for for a melee kill, I found myself constantly staying on the move to avoid enemy fire and the game rewarding me for a clever and aggressive play-style. Nearly all weapons have two different upgrade paths that you can switch up on the fly and not a single one isn't satisfying to use. Ammo is plentiful but not plentiful enough that you won't be swapping out your weapons regularly, and the increasing variety of enemies that require different approaches and tactics means you can't get comfortable with just one or two guns to see you through the day. The games signature "glory kills" are fast and satisfying, requiring you to "stun" your enemies with well placed gun fire first before closing in to finish them off. Each glory kill you pull off rewards you with extra health, a great little risk/reward mechanic that keeps the pace of the fight up and never sees you retreating from an enemy in search of more health. The chainsaw and BFG are perfectly implemented as well, incredibly over-powered one-hit-kill weapons with very limited ammo meaning you'll need to carefully consider when to break them out but always incredibly rewarding when you do.

Each level in DOOM is expansive and labyrinthine, as any good DOOM level worth it's salt should be. This ain't no corridor shooter, and you are encouraged to explore each environment thoroughly to discover all of the hidden secrets and unlockables this game has to offer. Traversing the environments is fast and fluid. You move at a satisfying clip and incorporate a clamber and, later, a double jump to navigate the large, vertical spaces.

A point against DOOM could be it's rather weak and generic story. If you're looking for a world deep with lore then you might be satisfied by what is on offer through the collectible journal entries that flesh out the UAC and their Mars research facility, but the pretty intriguing idea of a corporation-turned-cult is barely explored. Arguably, focusing more on the story might have taken away from the game-play, which is DOOM's obvious first priority, but I did sometimes find myself wishing I had a bit more motivation than DEMONS: KILL.

Another definite negative is DOOM's multiplayer offering, which feels very tacked on and is entirely forgettable. All of the kinetic energy and adrenaline found in the single player game is absent here. This is where the description "mindless shooter" fits perfectly, where not even a respectable variety of game modes can keep it from feeling wholly shallow and lifeless. DOOM's multiplayer is a temporary distraction to be played once and then never picked up again.

But, despite these faults, in the end the game is just too much fun and I have so much praise for what it does do that it is hard to fault it for what it doesn't. DOOM is an incredibly refreshing return to form and has re-energized my enthusiasm for genre that has been, in my opinion, languishing for years, bereft of any originality and becoming stale and stagnant in the process. DOOM remembers that FPS's don't need to be a dreary slog nor do they need to take themselves seriously or rely on scripted set pieces to be incredible experiences. DOOM is a must buy for any shooter fan.

+Create your own maps for both solo and co-op
+Great settings which allow you to configure the hud, field of view, motion blur
    ...

    Cons:
-Story is not that compelling(I didn't really care though since the gameplay is so much fun)

Definitely worth your money if you like fast paced action oriented fps games. Just be sure to download the latest patch. It fixes the v-sync and screen tearing.

A throwback to the old with pulse pounding action, beautiful visuals (the id tech engine 6 handles frame rates very well even with screens full of gibbed demons) and enough gore to put the SAW series to shame.

In point of fact, DooM takes everything from the old school and invigorates it with some things from the new; there's no reloading, sprinting (the standard speed for the DooM Marine is approx. 50mph) or ADS, less a few weapon mods. The gore is there, rip and tear through enemies as though they were paper bags filled with ketchup. The glory kill system is actually very good and rewards you with bonus health for getting up close and personal and this can be a lifeline on harder modes, the same goes for the chainsaw; a one hit kill wonder that makes enemies spew ammo. The soundtrack is insane, top quality Industrial metal that gets heavier and heavier the further into the game and really makes the demon arena battles feel spot on, it's just a shame that it stops when the floor is littered with all the bodies. The updated demon designs are perfect, based clearly on the old ones the new HD models are great, with a few demons having slightly different behaviour and attack styles and the DooM marine modelling is perfect as well. The new stuff, in the form of mods and runes put a dynamic spin on the gameplay and let you tailor your experience to suit. the lore is there but is optional, personally I enjoyed the added reading, it was interesting. Secrets are there and extend the experience by enticing you to search high and low for goodies. Overall the campaign experience is a fun, gore filled experience, ultra violence is partially easy but nightmare is another level of insanity. Boss fights were disappointing however. the arenas themselves are a blast and can be played again and again and never quite be the same, with the mobility and plat forming you'll be dip, dodging and diving between demons whilst trying not to die and make them die.
Snapmap is great and allows for endless, often hilarious concepts to be envisioned.
For me the multiplayer is great, there are several weapon balancing issues and yes, it isn't a full on arena style setup. There are load outs and things like that but being someone who has never really played an arena multiplayer before and who is a black ops 1/2/3 veteran, this game suits me fine and I seem to have little to no issue dominating people. The power ups, power weapons and demons allow for dynamic shifts in the state of play, it's all fun and games being the dominant team with a baron of hell to have an enemy player show and kill all 6 of you with this BFG he found laying around. (I know some people won't agree with this multiplayer review and be aware that if I'd been an experienced arena player this may be different)
Overall, a nostalgic and cracking experience from id software, very well done, can't wait for the next one..?

Doom reminded me that games used to just be fun. It’s an polished and incredibly enjoyable game that blends old-school sensibilities with new-school quality. I appreciate a steak, but every now and again, all I want is a delicious, greasy burger. Doom is that burger.

It is trying to be quake and unreal, but ends up being more like halo without vehicles with a bonus monster you can play as (If you find demon rune), the game modes aren't anything to write home about either. All in all its not a bad multiplayer, just pretty standard and forgettable. I certainly won't play it again. However, I must encourage you not to let that put you off. If you are looking for replay value, snapmap has you covered. The amount of depth snapmap has is insane, pretty much anything you want to make can be made in snapmap. There is already thousands of snapmap content provided by the community, and some of it blew my mind with how creative they were. I played 1 map called music maker (has coop support as well) and you can literally design a beat in a step sequencer on the floor, then play a keyboard along with it. I also had a good laugh when I seen the creator had taken a little extra time to add in the much requested cowbell. I played another map which was a funny take on whack a mole named "whack a soul". The name alone had me in hysterical laughter, but the game itself evolved my joyful laughter into painful laughter as I found myself at an arcade machine with flaming skulls moving left to right and shooting them with a shotgun. The whole thing lasted about 30 seconds and the map then triggered a victory since apparently I beat the high score. I bet heshe probably spent a lot longer than that designing it all just to provide 30 second s of laughter. Ahhhh, how I love the gaming community! Of course, there are more serious maps. For instance, a remake of doom 1 episode 1 first level of the classic! A few other examples are a Call Of Duty zombies style mode where you use points to buy weapons, health, powerups or open a door. A raid boss, playable in coop that actually scales to the amount of players in game. You have to see it to believe it, snapmap is the best feature of any video game I ever played. The dev have put the replayability of doom in the gamers hands and it is the best thing they could have done. Unfortunately, the tutorial is quite vague. It states the obvious but fails to teach the more complex features of snapmap. I honestly didn't learn much more than I could've figured out on my own. To learn complex stuff, I had to do a little bit of digging on google plus analysing some of the templates the game offers to learn certain things myself e.g setting amount of player lives lost before game over is triggered. I would've thought something like that would be simple to setup but I couldn't have been more wrong, had to tweak quite a bit of game logic to get it set up. I know I will hit many more creative walls in snapmap, thanks to not every feature being explained. I suggest waiting for a user to post a more in depth guide if you want to save yourself hours of frustration. Of course, a lot of things are easy in snapmap and the possibilities are huge. Overall, the campaign not bringing enough new features to the table and the standard multiplayer let doom down, but snapmap more than makes up for it. Without snapmap I would have given doom a 7 (Skippable, but a fairly decent blast from the past), but snapmap earns an extra point for both adding an immense amount of replay value and offering some of the best and easiest creation tools any game has ever had for consoles and pc. I couldn't justify giving doom anything lower than an 8. Expand

Going from Uncharted 4 to DOOM was an odd experience. On one hand, you have a game like Uncharted 4, something incredibly cinematic and layered and ground-breaking. A beautiful game with fully-wrought characters, a clear narrative arc, and a cutscene-heavy story.

Going from Uncharted 4 to DOOM was an odd experience. On one hand, you have a game like Uncharted 4, something incredibly cinematic and layered and ground-breaking. A beautiful game with fully-wrought characters, a clear narrative arc, and a cutscene-heavy story.

DOOM, on the other hand, is loud and bare bones. It is the antithesis of story-driven, a game that hearkens back to early '90s shoot-em-ups and thrusts you immediately into 10 hours of nonstop action. The setup is simple (and simply ridiculous): a Martian research facility is attempting to draw energy from Hell to solve an energy crisis on Earth, when one of the scientists opens a portal to Hell, flooding Mars with a variety of demons.

As someone whose favorite FPS series is Battlefield, I was skeptical going into DOOM. I had never played a DOOM game before and feared it would be too hectic, mindless, and absurd. What I got instead was beautiful chaos.

DOOM is, certainly, hectic at times, but the gameplay is fantastic. The gun play is great, the enemies are varied and interesting (how cool are the Revenant?), and the "glory kill" component is entertaining and brutal. Dispatching enemies in DOOM is incredibly satisfying. Unlike any other current gen FPS, there is a sense of completion with DOOM when you get past a tough area. Despite the seeming chaos of each encounter, this game requires strategy. Running around levels, double jumping away from trouble, glory killing lower-level enemies when you're low on health. Even later in the game when there are upwards of 50 high-level enemies at one time, DOOM remains grounded. Simply put, this is the best FPS campaign I've played in years. Maybe since Call of Duty 4. It's that good.

DOOM is a reminder that simplicity works. The basic premise of DOOM and its mechanics are simple, but they are fine-tuned to perfection. The resulting package is addicting, polished, and downright fun. I would recommend this to anyone who likes FPSs.

Doom honors its legacy while setting the stage for a new era for the long dormant franchise. Intimately gory encounters and a surprising emphasis on story more than make up for the bland multiplayer.

Doom's shimmering, bombastic combat is as absorbing as it is revelatory. [Aug 2016, p.100]
