Haven't checked the mp yet but sp campaign has been disappointing so far, It's just a generic shooter with no real story, lacking any massive setpieces or even the plain old fun of it's competitors. And indeed loading times are terrible. This is just sad. If you really want to play this game wait for it to appear in the bargain bin, it's not worth full price.

The classic doom cutscenes and jump scares have been reduced to plain as day boring enemies that seem to have very little variance and no shock value at all. the map system is god awful, even putrid. You find yourself constantly lost upon a floor, looking for a coordinate that is actually a floor higher, or lower, ect., with no way of telling, you end up backtracking and staring at this awfully layered and obnoxious map more than you actually fight enemies. Stages are highly uncreative and uninspired, and most rooms end up looking nearly identical. The Melee is grossly overpowered, borderline game ruining on its own. This allows you to nearly one shot every enemy after nearly a single gunshot, meaning you end up doing so every other god damned second, which in turns means youll end up watching this poorly done animation more than you actually shoot enemies. between this, the gimmicky chainsaw, and the bad distribution of ammo, the weapon system is overall scathingly bad and unbalanced, parts are eitehr far too mindless and easy , or far too aggravating for no reason. There is nothing scary about this game, nothing tense, nothing that even surprises you really. the Graphics aren't even impressive... in fact its hard to say what this game does right at all, besides maybe some very casual online fun, but even that wont last long. In General, probably the worst ps4 game ive played thus far besides Battlefront and Earth defense force 2055 Expand

I made an account on this site to submit this short review of the new Doom. I was so taken by it's sheer mediocrity, despite the gushing praise you can read from others here, that I just had to add my voice to the mix. Movement is fast and fluid, highly reminiscent of the original Doom. Graphics are acceptable for a current gen title, but certainly nothing on Uncharted 4. For me, however, and despite the modern spit and polish this is simply a game that doesn't need to exist. Gameplay wise it adds nothing that wasn't in the original Doom (apart from some annoying platforming mechanics). It even had the old Doom's same beats - see some juicy pickups? Expect to be swarmed soon thereafter. While the glory kills are interesting the first few times, they grow stale before too long. And the story of the campaign? Bland, uninteresting and with not a single character of note.

In short, a technically sound title that is bland, uninspiring and not worth a replay. I guess I'll be trading it tomorrow.

This seems so very unlike what I envisioned for the Doom franchise. It seems to copy from a lot of the modern shooters which have hand-holding features and other codswallop that Doom does not need. Enemies are woefully easy and dumb. Keep your $60 and wait for a better shooter.

    First-Person Shooter

    Was it fun?

Yes, I very much enjoyed playing through this game.

    Are there any similar games?

It is a very standard first person.

    Favorite World/Stage?

I really enjoyed going to Hell. I know how that sounds but they were fun levels.

    Would you play it again?

Yeah, one day I’ll play it on a higher difficulty.

    Any Complaints?

In one of the levels, there was an element of platforming. You had to climb up, jumping from platform to platform. I’m not a fan of platforming in the first person. I find its very hard to judge your jumps. I died more on that one level than I did the entire game.

How many hours did you play it?

Somewhere around 12-13 hours. Its perfect length for this type of game.

First of all the graphics are amazing. Doom 3 looked overblendered but Doom 2k16 has a really decent artwork. Even with not being native the 4k patch looks amazing. So far I didnt encounter any frame drops but certainly produces much noise on the system.

The soundtrack is absolutely topnotch. Although its mostly very heavy music I have to say its mixed in perfectly to set accents on the scenes you encounter in the campaign. The sound is hard, heavy, fast paced. Your adrenaline goes up instantly and makes the fight even more pumping. They did a good job on that one. Although taste might differ of course.

The controls are decent, even for console. There is a certain aim assist but I feel its less heavy then in other shooters. I m not the best in terms of console aim and the game is really fast paced more like the oldschool 90s shooters which is very unforgiving. The AI is not ultra clever but it will seek you out somewhen most of the time, so covering is not always a good solution. But if you acknowledge the game and its rules there is much fun to discover. Go right in the brawl melee shotgun the demons, glory kill them, get life back, find the next one, switch weapon and wreck the rest. Very satisfying!

The world is a nice concept of a semi-open world that interconnects via story telling. The mini-map does assist good although I like the simple markers more. Mini achievements bring bits of difference but most of them will be achieved anyways if you just play, kill and look behind corners. The rune runs are a nice addition. They put you out of campaign into an arena like setting where you have to kill or achieve a goal with a certain gun in a certain amount of time. Not the worst idea although pretty simplistic overall.

The story itself is pretty typical for Doom. Nothing new but its just what you came for and it ll be delivered without unnecessary hazzle.

After all the open world and multiplayer driven shooters that were produced, Doom 2k16 is definetely one of the best single player campaign shooters I have played in DECADES. The sound mixing is brilliant, the OST is pumping, movement is very fast and smooth even on consoles. Weapons are fun and can be modified for individual play style. It brings different mini components to mix up the drill.

To me Doom 2k16 is a true successor of the old glory that was named Doom 2. For prices below 10 bucks please get this game and give it a try at least.

And then besides that you just go from boring open space to boring open space blasting the same demons that just constantly do the same **** there’s no set prices by the way or cut scenes, just demon set ups. I thought this would be better if they were more closed spaces like at the beginning. The best thing about the game was the boss fights, to which there’s only 3 and the last one I thought was boring compared to the cyber demon and the 2nd one which were pretty good and the funnest parts of the game by far. The visuals are nice but there just isn’t much variety to them, everything about the game is just so repetitive. So as for rebooting an old legendary franchise I suppose it’s a very good thing but it’s just that really, mostly just a big dumb run, jump and gun blow up demons romp. As for the multiplayer I’ve only played 2 matches which was just today and it was very slow and lackluster, especially the mode “warpath” (I think it’s called) but I was only playing on the beginner section, I didn’t get to play a demon also, but all of the new guns and equipment and playable demons you can eventually use look exciting, but besides this I’m sure I’ve heard very good things about the multiplayer. And besides all that I don’t know anything about snapmap and that’s all really. Expand

This is how you reboot a franchise! Doom 2016 manages to retain the same fast-action paced adrenaline filled gameplay of the originals, completely reviving one of the most important titles of the gaming industry.

This game doesn’t f*ck around! Use your baddass arsenal to slay demons! As you progress though the levels you are showered with hordes after hordes of different types of monsters, increasing the difficulty as it goes on; after killing the waves, exploration is pretty welcome as there is much to uncover with some cool items that really can make a difference gameplaywise.

Those items are basically your upgrades “fees”, letting you maximize your health/ammo, giving you great passive effects and my favorite: weapon mods. The balance between the intense horde and exploration makes for an amazing experience and although the game is around 15 hours-long it does seem longer since there is no “downtime”.

As expected from a Doom title, the game is pretty challenging. I played on the hard mode (Ultra-Violence) and I died a lot, especially at the beginning as my inventory was lacking and I was still learning the ins and outs of the game. As they advise you: standing still is death! So I changed the controls in a way I could jump with L1 making it for a much better fluid gameplay as I moved like crazy during fights.

The ammo is something you must manage so changing weapons and using your entire arsenal is a necessity and very fun since the weapons are all great, very diverse and have their own niche of usage.

Doom also reminds the lazy developers of other games how good music enhances the experience. The heavy metal it plays fits perfectly with the chaotic nature of the game and its gruesome fights; so much better than the current trend of having no music.

As for the downsides: the game could use some puzzles despite finding keycards to open gates and there should be more bosses as there are only four, they are very challenging but they could use some work.

Another thing that I don’t like is that sometimes the game arbitrarily halts your backtracking by closing a gate or something impeding you to 100% the level. I understand when it’s a cliff you can’t back up but random gates popping up are annoying.

All in all Doom is an awesome testosterone filled game! No microtransactions, no downtime, no bullsh*t, just run‘n gun using your badd*ss arsenal to send demons back to the depths of hell!

A puzzle game where you have to think what to kill first in what way, using your resources with intelligence. Yes, that is Doom (2016). And the story bits that you find along the way are interesting enough and create a sense of madness and evil that impregnates every corner of Mars.

Music is insane. Not just the songs themselves but just the absolute perfect timing of the drop of hard metal music right when you blow the first demon away with a shotgun as a horde comes for you. The secrets are great and the fact that the music lowers to Q to you that you can now chill and jump around and look for some secrets.

The leveling up is awesome and adds depth too the game. The guns are fun and creative and every gun is fun to use. You think to yourself, oh i haven't used this bad boy in a bit, time to take it for a spin. the upgrades on the guns are active and physical. they add a new attack and also change the look of the gun. and when you buy two different upgrades you can toggle between the two with a tap of a button and watch your character pull off the rockets attachment (for example) and put on the sniper scope.

Then there is the chainsaw... super fn strong but has just the right balance with the fuel gauge on it. so let's say you upgrade to 5 fuel slots, you can take out a big a$$ demon with it and deplete your fuel in one kill. or you can kill 5 smaller demons with it. These chainsaw kills are incredible. Just google a few, but not all of them. Save some as a surprise for yourself.

The up close and personal melee kills are the perfect speed where you get to enjoy the animation for a second but short enough not to interrupt the fast paced game play. Also you are gifted extra HP drop when you pull it off, same goes for the chainsaw except extra ammo drops.

The level designs get more complex as the game progresses and are big enough for you to get your fill on wondering around but small enough that you feel like you keep moving and having fun around every corner. On top of that... the graphics are very good.

So if you are looking for a game that doesn't take itself too seriously and knows how to have fun, then DOOM is for you. You may say scary games aren't for you, but the music gets you so hyped up that you get more in the mental state of "ok you demon scum, time to die" and less "omg demons!"

For me, this was a must buy and I found that out after I bought it. But if you are reading this and on the edge just go rent it at a redbox or borrow from a friend.

I'll be honest I have yet to step foot into multiplayer. All i did was customize my character then left. But that just goes to show how good single player is.

Hope you get a chance to play!

PS: I am a HUGE Uncharted fanboy. I stopped playing Uncharted for now to keep playing DOOM. So that's something to consider.

As to the campaign, while it is very well thought out, I did feel the game didn't include enough secrets. Or more accurately the secrets were far too easy to find. I remember in the original Doom there were tons of secrets, many of which to a long time to find. However the classic Doom areas were pretty cool.

Really cool all the creature redesigns, just a shame there weren't any original creatures (cyber mancubus and exploding possessed don't count.) In fact a few of them were not there. But in all fairness the ones put there were given allot of care and attention to detail, even feeling allot like their classic counterparts.

Weapons were done right, all there plus some new ones. Mods and mod challenges were a great idea. However, I did think the chainsaw was a bit overpowered when compared to its classic counterpart. Glory kills are really cool, at first. But do get a bit repetitive once you've seen them for the umpteenth time.

Soundtrack is great and does its best to recapture the feel of classic Doom. Tracks aren't as memorable but decent enough. Creatures just don't impress at all in terms of sound. In the classic doom, all the creatures sounded scary and could make you wet yourself just for sounds alone.

Story is surprisingly decent and fits the lore pretty well. It's still weak, but allot better than I had expected.

    Overall:
Doom 2016 is a decent modernisation of Classic Doom, and I don't think it could be improved without taking away the air of nostalgia it desperately is trying to maintain while pandering to modern shooter styles and tropes. Still for all my criticism I had a blast with this game and can recommend it.

    Side tip:
Don't bother with lower difficulties. Ultra-Violence or Nightmare to get what this game is truly trying to be.

The story is there if you want it , but it isn't integral to the enjoyment of the game, however it offers enough interest through logs, and dialogue to push you through the game with some purpose. Also the soundtrack is phenomenal, and really gets you pumped to crush a room full of demons.

The visuals are gorgeous, and the execution animations, are some of the most gruesome I have ever seen. There weren't many performance issues that I noticed throughout my playthrough and the frame rate remained smooth.

Overall Doom is a satisfying, and refreshing shooter filled with intense, simple but fun combat, gorgeous levels, and a killer soundtrack making this well worth a trip to Hell

Doom is a modern version of an iconic, classic shooter. It's fast paced, has satisfying combat, and above all, it's fun. This is one of the better campaigns in a fps I've played in awhile. While more could have been done with the multiplayer, it's still fun and has a very classic arena shooter feel to it.

The story to this game isn't the greatest thing but it's not what the focus of this game was, This game is all about the gory action so keep that in mind. Multiplayer felt like a let down compared to the single player, In multiplayer it starts to feel similar to generic shooters like CoD, you have the standard upgrade and leveling system that gears itself towards experienced players so newcomers may find it difficult. The game does have a level builder that adds tons more of longevity to the game, people have made competitive maps, horde/survival maps and everything between. So if you enjoy high paced single player FPS's with a simplistic story give Doom a try, It's not a long game but enjoyable Expand

Punching also will teleport you past enemies. You won't know what happened so you'll back up, but you won't be able to and you'll think the game is glitching out, and now that enemy you teleported past is hitting you in the back. Enemies can also hit you mid air and cancel your jump, making you fall to your death to start the whole battle over again.

There is alot of platforming and platforming death in this game.

The pace is further ruined by the most annoying part of old Doom that they leaned into heavily, stopping you over and over to find a keycard. Where you having fun? Sorry, you have to find the Blue Keycard. Why this was put in the game is beyond me.

I consider Doom as sacred and I consider a sacrilege to ruin it in the name of modern times. Let's start from this clear thing, ok? After the criticism to multiplayer mode I was worried. I don't even want to talk about it. Fortunately, however, single-player mode saved the game.

Doom's plot is not the focal point as it was not in classic Doom games. However I would not say that it is poorly structured: there is a lore, a background, there are characters, there are turning points. And there are documents to read that explain events, technologies, places, enemies and weapons. Like Doom 3, but less heavy, this is still a post Half-Life shooter plot. The final cliffhanger is clearly a prelude to what will follow and I liked it. And (not even too much) extravagant fan theories or unsolved questions leave enough room to believe that Doomguy's past is less clear and more mysterious than it appears.

Notable work has been done to introduce a realistic, actual and modern, level design of the maps and at the same time to put secrets, collectibles, great verticality and real arenas where to fight. A successful union between two distant game design modes. Some weapons have, for my taste, a little too futuristic look (like the Pistol or the Combat Shotgun) but I liked all them pretty much, even new ones like the Gauss Cannon. I found the Rocket Launcher slightly underpowered, instead. Clever use mode for the Chainsaw, I must admit. BFG 9000 has less ammo than ever before compared to older games, but the feedback and satisfaction of use are impeccable. Gameplay has clearly undergone modernization: weapon upgrades, Praetor armor upgrades, Runes, pistol with endless ammunition (for what it's worth as a weapon) and glory kills with constant remuneration of health (and armor). There are various ways in which the game tends to "make life easier" for the player. So, is this new Doom an easy game? No, it wouldn't be an easy game, even if it would try. Because not only the weakest demon can wear out up to 1/3 of health with one attack, but above all for the fact that in this game you're always on the edge: if there was not a constant remuneration of health, the game would become almost impossible, because impossible is not to suffer an high constant damage. I appreciated the return of classic power-ups of both old Doom and old Quake games; in particular "Quad Damage" and "Berserk" – this latter one, paradoxically, is more fun to use here than in the old Doom, I dare anyone to say the opposite. Boss battles are very challenging and successful: even here – compared to the classic Doom games or Doom 3 – knowing and studying the boss's patterns and having strategy and fast reflexes is required. It's not enough just shooting them and the one I found the most challenging was against Hell Guards. Enemies' AI is rather smart, implacable and aggressive. I greatly appreciated return of both Doom's classic demons and new ones, and I think almost they all are very successful. In particular the Mancubus and Cyber-Mancubus, the Hell Knight (heritage of Doom 3), the Baron of Hell and the Revenant. Unfortunately, I hate few other ones and for hate I mean, if it was for me, I would have removed them from the game. I'm obviously talking about Possessed Security – enemies with so strong shield? In a so frenetic gameplay? Plus if they get too close they'll shot a barrage of shotgun that can kill you in a few seconds – and Summoners – too fast and strong, in addition they evoke minor demons: the chainsaw is the right weapon. But above all, for God's sake, Pinkies, I simply hate Pinkies: why, I say, why make them almost invulnerable on the front side? Why make them charging you that can literally kill you? They are annoying and are repeatedly placed in areas where it is full of other demons and not a few times Pinkies were the cause of very annoying deaths. They could have made their behavior more similar to classic Doom or Doom 3's Pinkies, without a stupid bulletproof head. In here they are a simple game design failure.

Graphically the game is truly exceptional, yet another example of technological wonders reachable with id Tech. Except some minor graphic glitches, is incredible the rendering on PlayStation 4, surrounded by a monstrous optimization at 60 frames per second. After all, we are talking about the evolution of the same graphics engine that ran Rage at 60 fps on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, in 2011, with one of the best graphics at the time. Excellent was also Mick Gordon's work on the soundtrack, with a nice mix of heavy metal genres; "Best Music/Sound Design" award at The Game Awards 2016 was more than deserved.

Doom is a game we needed. It brought the past into the future and succeeded well. It seems that what is old, is new now. The spirit has remained intact, the game works even if it has some defects. Now we hope well for Doom Eternal: please id... do better things and do not be foolish.

The game runs at 60 frames at all times .
The feedback of the story is good, but it does not develop much.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game made me indeed remember when I was little and played the old Doom. The yellow, red and blue keys, the mazes I would get lost and the arcade pace the game goes about. The game is not very long in it's single player campaign, but as we can go back to previous stages to collect upgrades left behind, the game will have at least 15 hours of gameplay until you start doing some multiplayer.

One thing I didn't like is that at some point we get two runes, Rich gets Richer and Armored Offensive that are too much better than the others, we get almost limitless ammunition and the game lose some depth. The game has some bugs yet, it crashed with me at least once every two missions, and a lot of players have similar complaints. I'm not taking this into consideration in my evaluation, since I know it will be fixed soon, but for such an expensive game, and to some extent simple, it should not have happened.

The game kept the arcade style of the series, we aim down the sights with just a few weapons, the others have modified fire by pressing the right mouse button. The character moves fast and in this game I saw something that I never had seem before, we can finish the enemies with melee attacks. At first it seemed not such a good idea, but it doesn't hurt the rhythm of the battle at all and add more gruesomeness to the game.

If you want a terror atmosphere this game is not for you. The character is a very powerful hero, we don't feel afraid or worry about what is lurking in the darkness, the battles are very open and predictable in areas that are similar to arenas. The immense power of our hero and the great quantity of enemies that attack us make for a fast paced arcade game focused on the action, not terror.

The music is very nice, but I thought the game is a little too colorful. I'd expect something more grim and gloom. Our character never speaks, which is good, since it avoids the danger of creating a bad personality and it's easier to identify with. We deal with just two NPCs, that are machines. In short, a very nice game if you want speed and action.

Unlike a lot of games that attempt to modernize releases of the past, Doom stays mostly faithful to the classic style that made the game so popular. You move around the maps extremely quickly, in a motion that isn't so much running as it is gliding. I like to imagine that your character has one of those hoverboard things strapped to his feet and that's what he's rolling around on. Most of the levels are based around key hunting puzzles that you have to solve when you aren't up to your eyeballs in hordes of demons. There are health and armor pickups that you need to hunt down when your health is low rather than simply hiding behind the nearest wall. And the weapons all feel satisfying to use and never need to be reloaded (except for one, which was almost never used for that exact reason).

Another thing Doom loves is it's upgrades. They come in three main flavors: character upgrades, weapon upgrades, and weapon upgrades for your weapon upgrades. This may sound confusing so I'll clarify: the weapon upgrades add a secondary firing ability to your weapons, while the weapon upgrades for the weapon upgrades further enhance that ability with things like more powerful shots and reduced cooldowns. The character upgrades and weapon upgrades are usually fairly well hidden in the game's large and open maps, meaning that exploration is both encouraged and worth your while. The weapon upgrades for your weapon upgrades on the other hand are given out like they're free samples. You get them for finding secret areas (which often contain the aforementioned weapon/character upgrades), completing in game challenges, or for simply just killing a lot of enemies. Since killing enemies is almost always required before you can proceed to the next area, you will get many of these upgrade tokens without having to sweat about it too much. And if you aren't feeling overpowered enough after all that, the game also places short term powerups in many of the battle zones. These range from very very helpful to very very useless, and I found I was really good at finding them almost immediately after I had finished killing all the enemies in the room.

If you're playing Doom for the story then you're probably playing it for the wrong reasons, but I'll go ahead and give you the gist anyway. Doom takes place on Mars and in Hell, which looks suspiciously like Mars but with more floating platforms and blood. A group of scientists were looking to solve Mars' energy crisis, and decided the best way to go about this was to use the energy from Hell. Along the way one of the scientists decided to release a bunch of Hell's demons on the promise that she would be taken care of by the demons, because that always works out so well for those people who decide to go that route. The story is mostly played out in the background, with the Doomguy quite obviously not caring about anything that doesn't involve shooting or punching things, and to it's credit the game understands that and allows you to skip past most of it. There are a few moments when the pacing grinds to a halt and you're forced to listen to dialogue, but they're fairly short. The only story you really need to understand is this: 1. You're a badass marine. 2. There are tons of demons with copious amounts of blood, squishy organs, and bones more breakable than a suicide pact between angsty teenage girls, 3. Go nuts.

Doom fills the void of arcade style shooter better than any game has in recent memory. It turns the mindless violence switch up to 11 from the very beginning and doesn't stop until the end credits. Enjoy killing the unambiguously evil enemies, hunt for all the secrets the game has to offer, and use the brief dialogue intermissions as an excuse to go refill your snack pile.

After development hell, a fitting title to a game centred around hell. The combat in the game is fast, and absolutely bloody. Every weapon, excepting the basic Pistol, is powerful enough to be viable in any situation, but are more useful some times than others. Each one of the dozens of demons is unique in its own way, and some, like the Possessed Engineer can be a life-saver in some situations, while others are annoying pests, such as the Summoner, who teleports around the place, spawning enemies to overwhelm you. Other factors heavily, and positively, improve the combat for me, such as the removal of reloading, which saves you from slowing down or glory kills, which is one of the only ways to last on higher difficulties. The soundtrack is one of the most unforgettable in a video game, containing incredibly heavy guitars, strange pedals, in-your-face synths and even a choir when need be. Just to think what the music for this game would’ve been if Bethesda’s idea of no metal in the DOOM soundtrack had gone through. Another thing that the DOOM franchise has been pushing since the first game is graphics, and my god does this game look gorgeous. The locales are all wonderfully textured, and you’d be hard pressed to find anything that looks horrendous in this game. Secrets are littered across the world; and in every level weapons that are introduced in the next level can be found, and also Classic maps, which let you explore older maps from the first two DOOM games, and the jarring difference between the pixelated background and the beautifully rendered demons is almost comedic. The story is nothing much to worry about. It’s a normal Science-Fiction story, with humans finding a new type of energy, trying to extract it, not noticing the massive repercussions that are bound to ensue. If you still crave some more out of the game, there are a couple options, although this game’s campaign is quite a good-deal long, and extremely re-playable, especially for its miniscule price. SnapMap is a handy feature which allows you to create your very own map, and also explore other player’s creations. The game does a good job teaching you, and you can probably read every tutorial in the seven years it takes to load SnapMap. There is also multiplayer, which died quicker than a honeybee. And at least the honeybee was useful. Whereas DOOM’s multiplayer wasn’t. And if you don’t want either, well, kiddo, you’re outta options. To recap, DOOM is certainly my favourite shooter to ever be released, with its high-octane combat, unforgettable demons and even less forgettable soundtrack. I’m certainly excited for DOOM Eternal. I've always liked the franchise, so it's no surprise that I've enjoyed this one too. Gameplay may end up being a bit repetitive, but it's rather enjoyable overall. The settings are also full of secrets, which slightly increases the length of the game. in any case, it is the online mode that will keep you playing for a long time if you want to continue with the game after beating the main campaign.

Dooms gunplay is fantastic and so is it's music. But it ends up feeling very samey since most places look very similar with the same color pallet and its lack of boss fights until the very end. You basically just go into room after room shooting monsters the entire time. Thankfully the gunplay is so good it makes up for i somewhat. Thankfully Doom Eternal fixes these issues.

The reboot of Doom encourages fast-paced, crazy, off-the-wall shooter combat. It does not force you to constantly hide behind walls like most shooting games do. Picking up items is as simple as moving over them. To speed the game up even more, they should allow the scenes to be skipped.

The story here does not matter. It is very generic and forgettable but never detracts from the flow of game-play. The lore is there however but only through codex entries and some stuff in the map. The game-play and pure violence and anger portrayed through the Doom Slayer is what makes this game so special. The game is smooth and fast. The gun play feels perfect and the weapons feel diverse and creative. The enemies are all unique and have different abilities that make the battles diverse and fun to play against. The game perfectly creates fast paced battles that aren't just mindless blood fests. The strategy in strafing and evading demons and choosing who to take out first and how is super satisfying. The upgrades are quite shallow but some of the weapon abilities are super fun. The game is perfectly paced always mixing up smooth platforming, demon blasting, and spectacular boss fights. However the game does suffer a little bit from repetitive areas where your forced to take out a room of demons and move forward. While the campaign is amazing the multiplayer is disappointing. The maps are all the same and very tight corridors locking you in the same battle. Demon runes are fun at first but then just become obnoxious. Load outs do not feel right and i would have preferred a different system. Also the progression system has barley anything meaningful except for bad cosmetics and weapons that are easily unlocked. Thankfully this is partially made up for by the snap map mode which offers many creative levels and give you the tools to make your own. It also features other bonus content like the arcade mode. Overall a complete package with a very lacking multiplayer but a phenomenal campaign experience with much replay value. Expand

Doom was promoted as a return to the series’ roots which means, as Doom was the original first person shooter, you would think that you’d be doing a lot of FPS. But man would you be wrong! Because Doom 2016 is more about platforming, corridor-running (without an enemy in sight) and what every game 2016 on needs, collectibles!!! These collectibles are not what you think they are, most areDoom was promoted as a return to the series’ roots which means, as Doom was the original first person shooter, you would think that you’d be doing a lot of FPS. But man would you be wrong! Because Doom 2016 is more about platforming, corridor-running (without an enemy in sight) and what every game 2016 on needs, collectibles!!! These collectibles are not what you think they are, most are absolutely necessary on higher difficulties because rather than an XP-system to get upgrades, the upgrades for armor and weapons come through these collectibles. As for the platforming, at most points it feels like you’re playing Mario or Mirror’s Edge as you will spend more time platforming than actually shooting; of which the shooting takes place in arena-like areas in levels, where 99% of the shooting takes places in your first-person ‘shooter’. As others have said, if I wanted platforming, I’d go play Mario.

As for the weapons, which are your most used assets in an FPS, by mid-game the weapons start meshing together as you just start switching weapons based on which gun has ammo. Even the weapon mods don’t add much to weapon variety. During the shooting sections, most of the time you’re actually meleeing because the glory kills system you get from staggering enemies are required to get health drops to survive in combat so there is no real strategy besides charge, melee, charge, melee. Get ready to use that shotgun. There is no strategy to be found in Doom 2016. Also, the chainsaw has been turned into a Borderlands-esque ammo making machine, which requires fuel to operate and when used on higher ranking enemies, they will drop ammo like candy from a piñata at a party.

Story-wise for all the hype that was put behind this story for redefining story in the single-player genre and how deep it was, the story is very much a throwaway that hardly exists in the background. The majority comes through codex pick-ups that you have to find and read and are not conveyed through characters or events. The main bad character has NO reasoning or explanation for why they did what they did throughout the campaign. The storyline is mainly stolen from Doom 3 and extremely watered down with no character development, no reason for these events or why the demons are invading. As for the times you go to Hell are ridiculous in comparison to the previous titles, it’s like you’re a welcome guest in the demons’ home, even though you’re supposed to be the most feared demon killer in history.

Once you hit the halfway point the game turns into a slog as you just want the game to end. The boss battles, while they vary in gameplay and are sort of interesting in relation to everything else, they are quite boring when you look back after the fight is done as even the Cyber Demon (one of the main bosses in Doom original) is a pretty easy fight. You don’t feel like you went into a fight against a huge demon, more like you got into a tussle with a kitten. The end game is the worst part of all this as the whole game ‘wraps up’ without you even getting any answers or even having satisfying gameplay as the last boss battle is the easiest boss battle in the game, where the Hell Guardians and Cyber Demon at least had some sort of challenge. I guess it’s not surprising in a game where they turned Hell Knights, which were essentially mini-bosses in Doom 1, 2, and 3, are now killed in the hundreds with very little effort.

This game is a rental if you want to try it, the campaign lasts maybe a max 10-12 hours, depending on difficulty, where most is you wandering the corridors for collectibles. For actual game and shooting, it’s about 4 hours. You won’t want to pick this game up ever again for the campaign, maybe only the arcade-mode. Play the original three Dooms if you want to have fun.

Doom is a tale of two very different shooters (and one quirky creation tool). Game is pretty. If you tune the sensitivity to be a bit faster, you can play at the pace you're meant to play at. Lots of nice guns. Nice progression system. Story actually gave me some interest behind my killing. Demons got repetitive by the 2nd part of the game. Would just pull out the rocket launcher and chaingun, just so I could be done with it.

I had a load of fun with this game. It's classic DOOM in the sense your only concern is to kill everything that moves. And ripping off a demons jaw is always satisfying. It's not supposed to be deep or thought provoking. It's just an almost constant edge of your seat battle with some great boss fights. If you want a game that's solely designed for intensity and fun. DOOM is worth checking out.

Mild complaints: I would personally cut doom guy's running speed by half and the text is way too small. I have an aversion to industry-wide menu screens that are 50% border crap and tiny visuals.
