Picking up health and armor and constantly running at demons and then destroying them never gets old. They always introduce a new weapon or new mechanic to keep things interesting. The focus here is completely on game play and it works. The story was interesting while simplistic which was fine but even though doom is not a story based game i wanted a little more. The boss fights where amazing and so was the platforming which paces the game very well until the third act where you basically just keep shooting demons. The campaign should not be missed but the multiplayer while fun at times was way too modernized and generic. The other features however like the SnapMap and arcade mode are a lot of fun and give the game more replay value. It also helps this game looks amazing and has a phenomenal art direction and design. And don't even get me started on that amazing heavy metal soundtrack. This game is an instant classic and something all other shooters should take example of. Expand

Yes, I very much enjoyed playing through this game.

    Are there any similar games?

It is a very standard first person.

    Favorite World/Stage?

I really enjoyed going to Hell. I know how that sounds but they were fun levels.

    Would you play it again?

Yeah, one day I’ll play it on a higher difficulty.

    Any Complaints?

In one of the levels, there was an element of platforming. You had to climb up, jumping from platform to platform. I’m not a fan of platforming in the first person. I find its very hard to judge your jumps. I died more on that one level than I did the entire game.

How many hours did you play it?

Somewhere around 12-13 hours. Its perfect length for this type of game.

I'll start off by saying that I'm not exactly the target audience for this game. While I loved Wolfenstein 3d, Doom, and Quake when I was younger, that was mainly because they were cutting-edge and offered never before seen experiences. These days, I look for good or unique storytelling in games and I find the typical grinds and gameplay loops boring.

I'll start with the gameplay. It's everything you'd expect a modern version of Doom to be. The only minor issues with it is that rockets don't seem to be nearly as fun as they used to be (maybe that's more of a Quake thing), and feedback upon receiving damage is kind of light. It's a great change of pace from the hordes of military shooters we've had for the past 15+ years. Although if you've primarily played military shooters, then Doom will take some getting used to.

Controlling the game via the PS4 controller works well enough, though isn't as good as a keyboard/mouse setup.

I must praise the graphics. Playing this on a standard PS4 is amazing. Everything is fluid and looks great. This is one of the best-looking PS4 games I've played, though I primarily play RPGs. I wish more developers would license id's engine for their PS4 games.

The story is the main reason I got this. Just hearing about Doom Guy and his disrespect for authority got me interested. The first level is amazing and there's some good characterization going on here, but after that, it's toned down a lot. Doom Guy doesn't start angrily breaking stuff again until one level in the middle of the game. And there's many sections throughout where he just stands there and watches. I really would have liked to see him do more. I was especially disappointed when meeting the final boss: he just stood there. Though I suppose his finishing move somewhat made up for it.

The story is light. I remember there being more story and background in Doom 3 (2004). You only interact with three other characters through the whole game, and they're not all that interesting. They really just serve to give you a reason to go from one level to the next. There's a relatively small (compared to other games I play) number of data logs that contain information about the locations, weapons, monsters, and characters. But again, they're not too interesting.

There's a surprising number of extras too, which I don't remember ever being in a previous Doom game. User-created levels, specific secret item/areas, and even original doom levels. This is always nice to see when most games these days repackage their extras as DLC.

So yeah, I had an average time with this game. It was a bit fun to kill hordes of demons, but it got a bit monotonous for me with not a lot pushing me forward, storywise. It's staying in my collection regardless. As an old-school Doom fan, I wouldn't do anything else.

My biggest problem with this game is the sort of "finishing move" concept, new to this iteration of Doom. My biggest problem with this game is the sort of "finishing move" concept, new to this iteration of Doom. It works like this: after you attack an enemy to the point of them having little health left, they are highlighted and this gives you the chance to run up and tear them apart mostly with your bare hands, leaving them a bloody mess, and spawning health/other pickups while doing so.

Sounds cool, right? I thought so too...at first.

Then I realized that since the game is mostly stingy with health pickups, you're forced to keep performing these sort of finishing moves whenever possible to stay alive, especially in later levels. It's a gimmick that completely breaks up the flow of the game. You end up shooting enemies a couple times then you rip them apart like cardboard, rinse and repeat. It totally undermines the intimidation factor of the enemies.

Imagine how fun the original Doom would have been if you had had the powers of the berserk powerup 100% of the time AND had to use it constantly. It would have sucked. The player SHOULD feel nearly helpless when left with nothing but their fists to fight hordes of demons--it's a great incentive to be prudent with ammo consumption. But in this game if you have low ammo, it's like "so what, i'll just shoot them a couple times each and tear into them faster than Oprah into a box of jelly donuts"

Also regardless of all the hype about this being an "old school FPS" (mostly referring to the health system actually based on health replenishment rather than CoD-style 'wait in a corner to heal' tactics) there ARE dialog screens you have to wait through, and they try to make "the story" be a part of the game too.

...uhm, this game IS called Doom, right?

The video game equivalent of a modern reboot/remake movie that captures little of the spirit of it's namesake.

But the Devil's a back-stabbing prick and Mars' UAC facility is now a blood-soaked den of evil. Demons and undead fiends stalk the formerly pristine hallways while the greater envoys of Hell plan to expand their territory and engulf the solar system in blood and despair. However, the demons aren't the deadliest thing roaming Mars. Driven by the oldest, purest hate but sporting an arsenal of devastating futuristic weaponry, Doomguy returns to show both the demons and the FPS genre how to do **** right. Forget about deliberate pacing, regenerating shields, or cover-based combat; everything here is a hyper-kinetic orgy of gore, guns, and unparalleled badassness. Unfortunately, Doomguy's staggering speed and prowess occasionally results in enemies getting left too far in the dust and breaking the pace of the combat. You'll zip through battle blowing apart demons so fast that you'll often be left waiting for the game to catch up and spawn more enemies. It also doesn't help that the game relies a little too much on combat arenas that lock you in a location and don't let you progress until you've wiped out several cumbersome waves of enemies. When these arenas are large enough, and most of them are, then this isn't a problem. But it definitely is a large blow against a modern game with old-school stylings to allow itself to become too formulaic, regardless of how exhilarating it all is. Thankfully, everything outside of the combat measures up amazingly well. The level design is slick, atmospheric, and always allows a lot of room for exploration which is necessary if you want to find the excellent weapon mods and power-ups which add a significant boost to the already exciting combat. Guiding the action is a surprisingly well-written story about betrayal and revenge which never impedes the gameplay and gives both Doomguy and the player the perfect motivation for wanting to plunge headlong into a fray of demons with a roaring chainsaw. Doom is fun. Simply put. At it's core is fast paced combat, strong game play mechanics, and the simple goal of murdering demons before they murder you. The story really falls by the wayside, but that doesn't matter, as it's the shooting and the bloody, visceral combat that's the main draw here. You kill your demonic foes in numerous ways, from close range shot gun blasts, to chainsawing them in half and getting rewarded with more ammo for your many, many guns. There's no reloading, as well - which aids in the flow of combat, allowing you to keep a fast pace as you zip around the large, open arenas, occasionally preforming a glory kill on a hapless hell spawn in order to get your health back up. Coupled with this, there's a large amount of upgrades to help bolster you on your mission; from weapon upgrades, to upgrades for your suit (some, such as the one making you immune to explosive barrels, are somewhat more useful than others), to runes gained from completing challenge arenas. All of it serves to make the game more fun, and a worthwhile venture at any rate.

    Can't recommend highly enough.

The only things that lets it down is that the gameplay doesn’t evolve at all from start to finish (other than adding new monsters and weapons) and, as a result, things became really repetitive well before the end of the 12+ hour campaign and I personally would have been much happier had the game come to an end a few hours sooner.

Doom willingly ignores the paradigms and beliefs of it's 'normal' competitors and encourages players to charge into the fray with reckless abandon. The violence is brutal, the gore is bloody and the speed is breakneck. Each battle is a test of how fast you move, what tool is best for the job and which targets you choose to prioritise before your opponents overwhelm you and defeat you. Succeeding against the odds is always rewarding, but some point towards the conclusion, the inevitable increase in difficulty doesn't hold the same appeal as it did near the beginning. Nevertheless, Doom is a near perfect shooter that pays homage to the original and also reinvents it at the same time.

The story is threadbare and deliberately written to be absurd and ridiculous, but this is done to simply justify why the player must go to a new location, complete an objective and battle more demons in the process. Despite this fact, it is still well written, but lacks meaning and also ends on a cliff-hanger, hinting at the potential for a sequel.

The campaign is the best feature of Doom, it's subsequent other modes like multiplayer and custom game-mode maker pale in comparison, although both deserve points for trying.

Overall, Doom is a unique shooter that will leave a lasting impression if you're a fan of FPS games with a twist.

Dooms remaster is a prime example of how a FPS in 2016/17 should be. Fantastic graphics and a smooth 60FPS, makes for a satisfying experience.

Dooms multiplayer is great, modern... but repetitive. It limits itself in that the maps all feel the same, and there isn't that much variation in game modes, and therefore the experience was the same every time. Most of the time in fact it just felt like the campaign but with other players shooting at you as well. Speaking of repetition after a while of gaining equipment and (baring in mind I was playing the hardest difficulty) and killing the same demons in waves to clear areas over and over it does repeat itself slightly, and at times just felt boring.

With all this being said I found the story of it alright, however for a FPS for this it isn't really that important as it's definitely more focused on acing the shooter aspect of it. It launches you right in with one objective: shoot and kill. Moreover I feel the boss fights of this game were fantastic, grueling and bloody all throughout with interesting mechanics, hard amounts of health and brilliant design they were always new and a joy to play through.

Overall DOOM was a fun game to play, I wouldn't however go back to it as there are other less repetitive experiences to be had in other games like this, however this does not take away from what an experience doom was. It's reasonably lengthy 12 hour campaign and entertaining multiplayer probably more fit for some than others, you get well worth the price of a now £15 game or lower. A fantastic example of how a FPS should play, nostalgia trip and memorable experience.

Take Doom for what it is, a mindless, violent, adrenaline fuelled journey through a Mars facility built by the UAC as you "Rip & Tear" your way through hordes of demons. This game delivers what it has delivered for years, making you, the gamer, feel like an unstoppable badass.

Updated with modern graphics that are beautiful, a perk and upgrade system that balances out well, a challenge system that is optional to accelerate the pace of those upgrades, and the glorious easter eggs that slap you in the face with some great nostalgic levels from the classic games, this truly embodies a positive modern touch that does not harm the nostalgic feel of the game.

Although, it has to be mentioned that the multiplayer is subpar, and while it does feel a little bit like Quake Arena, the balancing of the demons kinda throws everything off, and it gets tiring fast. Also, this game is nothing like Doom 3, it is more like a modernized Doom 2, so do not expect to be walking around with your flashlight and have imps jump from around corners and dark hallways. Oh, and you never have to reload.

    Positives:

    - Fast paced action
    - Great upgrade system
    - Beautiful graphics
    - Lots of guns (classics included)
    - Nightmare mode makes things interesting and tough
    - No other game will make you feel more like a badass
    - Classic level easter eggs and secrets are fun to find
    - Mick Gordon absolutely nailed this soundtrack
    - An amazing fps to help escape from the plethora of cut & paste fps games out these days
    - Snap map allows for users to share their creativity

    Negatives:

    - Story is linear and just background noise
    - Multiplayer won't entice you to return
    - Snap map creativity is limited by modding restrictions
    - No single player DLC :(

Overall, this game is awesome. No other word I can use to truly describe it, it really is a standout for FPS games. I may have a slight bias towards Doom as it was one of the first games I ever played on my PC, but if you pick this one up, especially for the current price, you will not regret it. This is a must buy for fans of the series. It really does Rip & Tear itself away from garbage FPS games that are being released around it. This is one of the two games of 2016 that I thoroughly enjoyed and put countless hours into, and it easily receives a 90% (9/10) from me. BFG = Best F***ing Game. The other game is Uncharted 4 btw.

The AI is stupid, and it's easy AF to not take damage. How you ask? Just keep moving. Seriously, if you just keep running and gunning constantly, then you will never get hit or take any damage at all. . . fml. Because of this, the harder difficulties are not hard at all. The AI doesn't get any smarter or use tactics or strategy of any kind (and hell you don't need to either). All harder difficulties do is turn the enemies into bigger bullet sponges who do more damage, but again, just keep moving and you'll be fine. In other words, all turning up the difficulty setting does is make it take longer to kill things instead of actually making the game harder. The only plus side to this game is that you aren't restricted to just two weapons, a primary and secondary. You can have and switch between all the weapons. Also, you have a self heal via "glory kill" which simply requires you to melee kill an enemy when they flash to get heals. You also have pretty much unlimited ammo in that when you are running low, all you have to do is chainsaw an enemy and out pops ammo for all your weapons. This game is the most casual piece of trash I have seen in a while. Would not recommend even in price drop. Don't bother. Expand

Regarding this, it's a very predictable story.

This aspect is the most frustrating of the game, because it is painfully obvious there is wasted potential. For most players, it's not a problem because they simply want to kill more enemies with more guns. And that's most enjoyable about DOOM, it's what will keep players coming back and enjoying the game and will most likely lead to a sequel.

The multiplayer is the worst part about DOOM. I would have preferred the developers forego multiplayer to focus more on a more diverse campaign. Snapmap is a welcome addition, because the community is fantastic with their originality. Snapmap is a lot more enjoyable than the multiplayer.

Doom 2016 is all about the campaign, which is excellent, and in this day and age written in a sense that you'll be able to grasp and get involved in. It never obstructs the action, and this is the single most important aspect of any shooter, and for Doom this is the key to success. Because the action in Doom 2016 will take you by surprise. In its best moments, it's absolutely and literally heart-pounding. So coming back to nostalgia again, this is Doom as it was, but on serious amounts of steroids and adrenaline. Doom is hard on the weak, and pleasure for the hard.
The downside though, is in Doom:s multiplayer PvP which feels dated to say the least. Naturally, I'm a product of evolution who prefer the 'hide and recover' mechanic of modern shooters, and Doom doesn't have that. You'll need to brush off your old strafing-skills from the nineties again. Because this is Doom. And it doesn't care what you think. I'm gonna end it like that, really, "This is Doom". Because it sure as hell is.

The classic doom cutscenes and jump scares have been reduced to plain as day boring enemies that seem to have very little variance and no shock value at all. the map system is god awful, even putrid. You find yourself constantly lost upon a floor, looking for a coordinate that is actually a floor higher, or lower, ect., with no way of telling, you end up backtracking and staring at this awfully layered and obnoxious map more than you actually fight enemies. Stages are highly uncreative and uninspired, and most rooms end up looking nearly identical. The Melee is grossly overpowered, borderline game ruining on its own. This allows you to nearly one shot every enemy after nearly a single gunshot, meaning you end up doing so every other god damned second, which in turns means youll end up watching this poorly done animation more than you actually shoot enemies. between this, the gimmicky chainsaw, and the bad distribution of ammo, the weapon system is overall scathingly bad and unbalanced, parts are eitehr far too mindless and easy , or far too aggravating for no reason. There is nothing scary about this game, nothing tense, nothing that even surprises you really. the Graphics aren't even impressive... in fact its hard to say what this game does right at all, besides maybe some very casual online fun, but even that wont last long. Campaign:
    Pros:
    - Excellent level design. Intricate, sprawling maps stuffed to the brim with hidden secrets and kill arenas make return visits almost inevitable and completely enjoyable.
    - Fast, furious and fully satisfying combat. Challenging (playing on hard) while still making the player feel empowered. Watching enemies explode like blood squirting ammo and health pinatas is endlessly fun
    - Graphically and artistically excellent. This is the first game in ages I actually cherished unlocking the enemy models - everything in this game, from the weapons to the demons to environments themselves, look incredible
    - Pulse pounding music. From the opening menu to the end of the game, I was constantly bobbing my head along to the awesome soundtrack. Getting to hear the end-level music was one of the most satisfying parts of completing a stage
    - The codex is hilarious and well worth reading. Adds a lot to the lore.
    - A well defined world, loaded with backstory, weaving an excellent lore

    Mixed
    - The story is laughable and weak, but does enough to move you along without questionging
    - While the handful of NPCs are well voiced, they lack character and are forgettable

    Cons:
    - Nothing detracted from my single player experience.

    Snapmap:
    Pros:
    - Add tons of life after the campaign
    - Gives a massive amount of tools to create your own in depth levels and campaigns
    - In depth tutorials are very informative and helpful

    Cons:
    - Actually creating a solid map is incredibly time consuming and overwhelming

    Multiplayer:
    Pros:
    - A large number of unique and ingenuitive game modes
    - Plenty of maps
    - In the good game modes, action in frenetic and focused.
    - Playing as a demon never gets old
    - Huge amount of customization options

    Cons:
    - The old school modes do not work well here. The maps are too big for undirected modes such as team deathmatch. Objective-based only.
    - Far too limited weapon selection
    - Progression is limited to skins after the initial unlocks. There is little to keep working towards once you've unlokced the weapons and demons (which doesn't take long). Added the ability to unlock and mix and match secondary fires would've added a lot of longevity to the mode.

Available on Amazon now for under $20, DOOM provides an amazing campaign and nearly endless content between creative Snapmap additions and a solid multiplayer experience. An absolute must buy.

The single player campaign is "DOPE" yes I used the slang term dope from the 80's lol. It's that good... There is so much here and it's made in a way where you can play this game anyway you like. Let me explain. The single player game is offered two ways arcade, and well, campaign (lol). Arcade is just like it sounds, play for high scores with all weapons available. The scoring is done in a way where it's very exciting to watch, the screen goes crazy as you go for kill streaks, head shots and specific attacks to increase your score, its a total blast.

There single player campaign is the meat and potatoes of this game. They did put a lot of effort in here. I want to first say that every level has a bunch of secrets to find. One being an original level of doom hidden to discover (fully updated with current character design in the old school level " COOL") on every level of the game. Besides that there are "ruin trials" for upgrades, items to find, keys to search for, weapon, armor upgrades and of course terrifying enemies constantly swarming at you. The levels are designed with precision for maximum gunplayability (is that a word). I love the map system, you can use 3D or 2D and it definitely helps. The enemies are all your old favorites updated, beefed up and on you, like stink on something smelly...lol. You get plenty of guns at your disposal most have secondary functions and can be upgraded. The weapons are so much fun to use, blasting enemies feels amazing, you must use skill, knowledge and know your enemies weaknesses or your a goner. Glory kills are new, I wont give to much away here, but cracking skulls never gets old...

The levels are deigned like this, you get to a new area kill everything, then get some breathing time to explore, complete tasks and even do some platforming. Some people say the game is simple, but thats not true. Its a complex game, if you play it that way. It can also be a mindless shooter just ripping through enemies like in arcade mode... If this was the whole game it would satisfying, but thats only the first half of the title. There are two more modes.

Multiplayer to me is tons of fun, they have team death match and the standard fare but they did add a few other modes in too. I like bots are included to play with, its old school multiplayer and I enjoy the heck out of it. You can upgrade your characters look as well as other attributes. Not much more to say about this mode, it's definitely worth playing and can be a blast is your into multiplayer.

Snap map, whats this? I can make my own maps? Big deal? Well it is a big deal, in this game. I was shocked how versatile this mode is and how well it works. I played countless multiplayer matches on custom themed games (not all shooters) that the community designed. I can make my own games up too and there so easy to do! A tool like this can keep a game alive for years. You can make almost anything up you want here and its again done great. Its so user friendly. You can make single player, multiplayer, co-op whatever, you can make it in snap map. If making your own levels sounds boring or to difficult to you, you never have to, there are a ton already made up for you to use and their all rated right there in snap map. What can I say, jeez louise, easy peezy.

Doom is an amazing package for both people who love nostalgia or just want a great shooter. Indeed old school doomers will appreciate the nods to the past while new players will marvel at the nonstop action , go doom go!

ID and Bethesda ARE heading in the right direction with keeping Doom and Wolfenstein closer to their roots. But this time it just didn't feel like a satisfying rampage game like the originals. I didn't keep this long and ended up returning it. Others might like it, I was disappointed.

It's singleplayer is truly the best in terms delivering its gameplay front and center and not giving a dam about story or lore in the form of long winded dialogue dumps and expository jumble. It has exploration, collectibles and original DOOM maps thrown in to relive the golden days of that old tradition of FPS games. The music is simply badass, with shredding and high frequency electronic mixed making the experience of killing demons so dam amazing. The designs of the demons and such is pretty dam cool, and while the bosses are not the best, the constant killing and slaughter trivializes this. Glory killing is outstanding and so metal to do (though it can get old for some and completely understand this) that I'm glad it's an option. If DOOM had only its singleplayer, then it would be an easy 10/10 for me.

But it does not. Multiplayer is the weakest part of DOOM, with a setup more catered towards Call of Duty, Halo and other FPS that DOOM inspired but was not along sides with at the time of its conception (like Wolfenstein 3D or Quake) and will be a "tale of two games" when playing. I think it is decent, but if there was more effort put into its multiplayer style similar to Quake, it could easily crush alot of FPS online multiplayers. The Snapmap is a creative tool to allow you make maps and create little missions in them to share with your friends and the community. It is not as refined as say Forge like the Halo series, but it gives some creativity that will make you tinker with it and possibly make something cool.

Overall, DOOM is everything I wanted in terms of a no nonsense campaign through Hell and Mars mired by some multiplayer issues and online things. It is definitely a game that deserves alot of praise for this and cannot wait to see the sequel.

Doom 2016 understands the most important thing about videogames: fun. And what does it do that makes it so fun to play?: GAMEPLAY. The controls on this game are PERFECT. They respond so precisely, so quick, they feel so natural. Doom 2016 does not care about the modern standarization of FPS's, there is no such thing as a regenerating health: if you want to recover HP, you need to find medipacks spread across the map, or man up and defeat your enemies for a health drop. Cornering away and shooting enemies from afar will not get you far in this game, specially on the later stages, where the amount of enemies on screen is RIDICULOUS, and not a single frame drop on my whole playthrough.

Also, the chainsaw: an insta kill (on limited amounts, of course) to any enemy. When cut in half with the chainsaw, enemies drop ammunition, so your carnage of lead and bullets continues, this balance between insane amounts of action and shooting never stops, and even if you run out of ammo, with a simple cut of the chainsaw the action goes on, giving this shooter an unstopable pace, no moment feels dull or boring, its action from beggining to end, not even the story makes a halt to the fun experience: as it almost non existant: the plot may very well be resumed like this: the gates of hell are open, demons sprawl on mars, go ahead and kill them all. That's it: there's almost nothing to spoil, nothing to tell, and it feels so refreshing.

I just cant stress enough how good and fun of a shoter Doom 2016 is, and if you're fan of the FPS genre, you own yourself to play this.

This is DOOM. Straight up. There's no nonsense here. It's intense, aggressive, and is an adrenaline fueled joyride from start to finish that never lets you go for an instant.

DOOM is the game DOOM 3 wishes it was. Going back to what made the original great, it focuses on being fast and fluid, possessing rewarding and cathartic combat that's fast and brutal and bloody. Killing demons is an absolute joy to behold, and tearing through the hordes makes you feel like an absolute badass.

The story is who the f*** cares? You kill demons, that's it. Kill ALL the demons. Well, okay, there IS story, and actually not a bad one, though your involvement in it is not much more than a torrent of destruction and carnage that can't be stopped by anything. The DOOM Marine is, ironically, passive in the narrative as a whole, being more of a side character, despite being the bane of all of Hell. The story fluff is contained in the codex, which has detailed descriptions on lore and characters and locations and demons and all that, which you can read any time you want if you care about that kind of thing, something the DOOM Marine couldn't give a flying demon's lower jaw about. He's there for one thing; to kill demons. A lot of demons. ALL the demons, preferably.

The gameplay, as stated before, is fast and aggressive. No cover based shooting here, folks. Combat is reliant on having quick feet, quick reflexes, and quick trigger fingers, requiring nerves of steel as you tear your way through the legions of Hell's minions. The game's main addition to combat is the "glory kill" system, which is not an innuendo, trust me. Weakened demons can be finished off with a pre-animated takedown move, which thankfully is quick and stylish, never breaking up the fast paced flow of combat with a huge overdone cutscene like other games tend to do. You'll take off a demons arm and smack them in the face with it and then jump to the next demon to kick his legs out from under him and punch his face into the floor within the course of a few seconds, and it all blends in perfectly. Performing these moves will yield health, providing incentive to take demons down in this method, allowing you to keep up the fight and keep the pressure on as you rip and tear your way around the combat arenas.

The game also harks back to the original games by featuring open ended maps that focus on key hunting, also having many collectibles to track down and collect, which is what you usually do with collectibles. The promise of weapon and armor upgrades as well as additional health, armor and ammo capacity properly incentivises exploration through the sprawling maps, looking for secrets that can be anything from the listed above, to even original DOOM levels, complete with original 8-bit graphics that are fully playable.

The weapons are just as satisfying as the combat. All of them, save the starting pistol, are brutally effective at eliminating Hell's legions, and all are viable options... except the starting pistol. Unlocking secondary firing modes gives new combat options, ranging from a grenade launcher for your shotgun to micro-missiles for your assault rifle, to a stun bomb for your plasma rifle to a lock-on function for your rocket launcher. All of these can be upgraded individually through upgrade points you earn through the game for finding secrets and killing demons in order to increase their effectiveness, and doing so allows you to outright destroy even the most powerful demons. The weapons are practically in this for the same reasons you are; to kill demons.

The DOOM Marine himself is also worth mentioning. Despite not having a single line of dialogue, he is one of the most charismatic characters I have ever seen in any game. Simply through first-person gestures, you see what kind of person the DOOM Marine is, his personality conveyed entirely through his interactions with the world and with other entities in it, and it speaks volumes. The DOOM Marine has more character and personality through action alone than so many other video game characters that have hundreds of lines of dialogue to work with and just end up being bland and generic. The DOOM Marine is two things: he's angry, and he HATES demons. Not the most complex character, fair enough, but the sheer personality infused into the character just through his actions make him so likable. The first bits of dialogue in the game, being an expository monologue by the main corporate guy, is interrupted by the DOOM Marine grabbing the monitor and tossing it aside, because he couldn't care less about what's going on around him. He's there for one thing, the thing that his whole existence revolves around, and the same reason you're here as well. To kill demons. ALL demons.

I could go on for hours about this game, but I'll leave it at this: this is DOOM. It pays homage to the original games without licking its boots, and stands proudly as a worthy successor to its legendary heritage.

I started out not really liking it though cos I wasnt used to the Glory Kill and ammo/life/armor pickup system of old. So used to health regen that I forgot my 90s roots! Also, I kinda rushed from mission 1-5 at first and that made the game felt easy and pointless.

My opinion and experience changed however when it slowly grew on me and I did a new playthrough, but this time paying close attention to everything the game has to offer.

If u want the best Doom 2016 experience, TAKE YOUR TIME (ironically since it's so fast paced), and EXPLORE. The mission challenges, weapon upgrade challenges, rune upgrade challenges improves the gunplay to PERFECTION.

Those optional mechanics made me feel the huge variety of gameplay and gunplay Doom has on offer, and it isnt just a game of point and shoot. The challenges made me vary my playstyle and using every single gun, not just shotgunning my way through. This resulted in the most fun i've had in an FPS since Destiny.

Second thing I loved about Doom is the Secrets. I had fun hunting down every single mission collectible and secret locations. Its also rewarding as it gives u early access to powerful guns, much needed ammo/armor, extra lore, classic playable Doom maps and fun mini collectibles. Very satisfying and rewarding.

Bosses are super cool, I had an amazing time beating them at "Hurt Me Plenty" difficulty. I cant imagine going thru all that in Ultimate nightmare. Insane!

All in all, Doom 2016 delivered an experience so visceral, fun, simple yet engaging, that this has to be my shooter of the year for 2016.

Destiny still ranks as top dog in my list, but wow is Doom a close second.

There is really quite a lot to love about DOOM. It does several things very well. The level design, structurally and visually, succeeds in maintaining interest and provides plenty of exploration opportunities, where you can find collectibles (especially the charming Doom guy dolls). This is a nice break from the break neck action that ensues in bursts, and which can admittedly can begin to wear you out if you play too much of this game in one sitting.

The crazy action is accompanied by an operatic, devilish music score that nails the tone of the game, cueing at the right moments an orchestral blast that really gives the game a sense of polish and succeeds in making the player feel immersed.

The story isn't overwhelming nor is it underwhelming. The game reaches a nice middle ground where it provides a feasible plot outline that doesn't obstruct from gameplay, and since the gameplay is intriguing enough, it is really a plus that the game isn't too story heavy. That being said, the story does supply some very epic fight sequences, and succeeds in making the player feel like an angry Doom guy who really just wants to blast every hellish fiend he encounters to a lower level of hell.

The actual gameplay itself is varied due to the wide array of weapons and special equipment that the player throughout the game can eventually collect and use along his journey. The game as such is very much so a learn as you go kind of game, forcing the player to adapt to new situations and test which weapons work best against the wide gamut of enemy types.

I was nervous about this game from its gameplay trailers where there appeared to be an incessant amount of fight animations. Luckily, as you play along, you notice less and less when these occur, and they actually serve a function in the gameplay itself (they drop health and ammo). Furthermore, they aren't necessary.

The reason this game isn't scoring a 10/10 for me is its lack of local multiplayer. DOOM's multiplayer is really quite a joke, and it's a lucky fact that the developers didn't create a campaign that depended on it. It would have been nice to be able to play local multiplayer, like the old Doom games. Nevertheless, it's a relief to see a game that put all of its eggs into the right basket, unlike so many other games nowadays that are trying to do everything and succeed at doing nothing. DOOM's campaign is so genuinely fun that its lack of local player becomes somewhat insignificant.

Besides shooting, the game also has some platforming and exploring. The levels are very well put together, so jumping around and exploring every corner not only adds playtime, but it is fun as well. I didn't find even half of the secrets (maybe like 30% secrets, 10% collectibles), but it still was satisfying whenever I found one.

The music also compliments the game well. It is metal and gives more agency to the fights.

The game does have some flaws though. First off, there were some glitches, specifically when enemies don't spawn. This forced me to reload my game twice. Secondly, the game struggles in long play sessions. It gets a bit too repetitive, especially in the second half when there are less new enemies, locations and guns. And finally, the multiplayer is fun but nothing special.

Despite the flaws, Doom is must play for any FPS fan. Do yourself a favor and pick it up.

There's almost no story - just go and kill some demons in the most glorious way you can. There's some explanation to Doomguys motives and story later on but it is unobtrusive. You just want to play it, you don't have to force yourself.

Weapons are very satisfying except for pistol. You couldn't have come up with a **** pistol in a shooter even if you researched the subject and worked on it for years. Fortunately, you get shotgun after 10 first demons and never come back to pistol ever again.

Glory kills are fast and unobtrusive gorefests you'd expect. They look stunning but after a while are a tad repetitive which is really non-issue. You can disable them altogether in settings (or just disable the color marking on demon). You can also configure the game to display weapon model in the middle of screen just like in original Doom (really cool).

Soundtrack is just stunning. You should really check it out yourself on Spotify or YT. Mick Gordon has done amazing job. The music is not background to the gameplay but is rather forefront and drives the gameplay. He's also a cool guy, you might want to see a review with him on Doom on YT.

Visuals are also very good. The rendering engine reminds me of Alien Isolation which I have praised for amazing materials work. Same applies here but is extended to amazing metallic and wet material effects. This is all thanks to PBR. However what is the most amazing about the graphics in Doom, is that despite it being one of the best looking games on PS4, it maintains 60FPS in Singleplayer almost constantly. I have experienced maybe 2-3 FPS drops throughout the campaign.

The game is also full of secrets like Doomguy toys (which unlock weapon/enemy models in a gallery in main menu) and hidden classic Doom levels. Finding them is plenty fun but the joy is a little diminished once you find the map of the level. Secret areas are shown on the map so it's easy to find them. Some secrets are behind doors which need to be opened with a lever - the lever is not shown on the map though and is usually really well hidden.

There are also many mods for your weapons. 1/3 of them I considered **** (scope in a machine gun? this is Doom!) but the rest is really useful and fun. You unlock them by finding bots throughout UAC complex. You can also enhance your own skills with Demonic Runes. These have to be unlocked by doing certain challenges on seperate maps (kill X enemies with Y in Z seconds and many more).

Overall I enjoyed this game a lot more than I expected. It would be 9.5 if it was possible due to the minor gripes I mentioned. I absolutely recommend this game to all Doom and FPS fans.

This game is honestly a work of art. A work of bloody devilish art worthy of all its praise. This games story is not only fun and interesting. Yet simple at the same time not being overly to complex yet having some depth to it at the same time. I would also love to bring up the multiplayer which is addicting, and when with friends you can sink hundred's of hours into the game.

While thats all great the most innovating feature yet is Snap Map which adds thousands of hours of new content made by the community. Character customization is up there witch Halo: Reach letting you really sport your very own Doom Marine.

This game is a truly legendary game a 10/10 and a must buy for anyone.

BORING. Its probably the worst thing you can say about something that's supposed to entertain but its how I feel about the new Doom.

This is a game that has no idea what it wants to be. Is it a first person shooter. "Sort of". Is it a role player Half Life style of game. "Kind of". Its this uncomfortable mix of elements that simply don't work well together that make the game so dull.

Doom is supposed to be fast and furious but this game is slowed down significantly by the need to constantly find things be it entrance ways, key cards, etc. You constantly find you are undertaking paquor style antics al la Remember Me.

Just as annoying is the mods system. It has a horrible counter intuitive interface that demands your time and attention. Its a ghastly thing that again slows down the pace of the game.

Indeed even the weapons have been bastardized. I can not image why a chainsaw should "run out of ammo". A situation made worse by the constant shortages of ammo, similar to the Stalker series of games.

Taken together this is a recipe for pure frustration and ultimately disinterest. I played for 30 minutes and had, had more than had enough.

Yet another title from Bethesda that makes me pine for an updated graphic take on the original games.

The definition of early 3d FPS, hell with Wolf3D they practically invented it. Doom3 was a strange game, it has an even better rating on metacritic for the PC original release (87, while this has 85), but the console releases have a 67 rating... Doom3 is by some considered the definition of Horror FPS, with masterful atmosphere, and incredible tone and jumps, and by others, a spin-off or a slow paced wannabe.

Found Doom 3 pretty fascinating, slow to get into, but definitely a unnerving experience with some incredible horror atmosphere and effects. As if Doom grew up with the fans of the Original. From a young naive but playful kid, to a dark, layered, mature adult. Doom 3 was kind of a perfect demonstration of how a kids game could become a game for adults.

Which is why Doom 4 is such a strange beast. It's almost cartoonish in how light and palatable it tries to be. There are no scares, no horror, even the blood is minimal and dried up. Even the battles are, whilst challenging, about as scary as children's Halloween costumes. Doom 4 is in a way a return from the mature dark horror defining game of 2004, back to the young, full of energy, and immaturity of the 90s. You have zero punishment for doing badly. Checkpoints, the option of infinite ammo with certain upgrades, a refill to full armour and health at checkpoints in boss battles, and every monster looks like a Pixar designed character. That's not to say the game isn't tough, some of the arenas are relentless, and the boss battles are punishing, even on lower difficulties, and borderline impossible on max difficulty. But There's nothing scary about any of it, just difficult.

That being said, it's a great freaking game. It's fun, there's a million combinations of weapons and mods to use, and every circumstance suits a certain type of weapon, it recaptures the excitement that FPS had in the late 90s. If anything it's more a Quake game than a Doom game, but it feels more like the Original Doom than Doom 3 did, which is a strange situation, because it almost feels like it invalidates the strides and maturity that Doom 3 brought us. Unlike Doom 3, no one's going to recall scary moments, look into the shadows expecting something to pounce out at them in real life, or lose any sleep. Doom 3 had a strong psychological element to it that resonated with the player. Doom 4 is just a fun game that you play and then stop playing. That's not to say that it's bad, but in a way to me it felt empty compared to the experience that Doom 3 left me with.

I gave Doom an impressive 8/10, because it's a badass game, that rekindles some of the childhood excitement I had with early FPS games, that has been lost to points systems and pseudo realism, also I'm sure it's a blast on multiplayer, and I will more than likely replay it in Arcade mode. But Doom 3 was an experience that played tricks on my mind at night, and disturbed my girlfriend as she watch me play it, and there's a big gap between a fun game that you enjoy playing, and a game that feels more than just a game, an experience that changes you. So whilst I shall look forward to Doom 5, and shall replay Doom 4 and check it out on multiplayer, I will dream of a Doom 3 remaster or spiritual sequel in the future.

Doom honors its legacy while setting the stage for a new era for the long dormant franchise. Intimately gory encounters and a surprising emphasis on story more than make up for the bland multiplayer.

Doom's shimmering, bombastic combat is as absorbing as it is revelatory. [Aug 2016, p.100]
