This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So, i have been playing this game for some days, and i'm really enjoying it. The gameplay is so good, the precision of the aim is great, the feeling of playing Destiny is awesome. The music is one of the best things of this game, it's a master piece, Paul Maccartney thank you!!. This game just have some issues, like the story, it should be a little bit well told, and the interactions with other players it's not so good. But, overall, it's a great game, and i'm having lots of FUN, this game is a must have. Expand

Easily a top tier game, many reviews are negative because of little play time or pre-patch written, Bungie is now listening to the community, making updates and overall improving the experience not to mention that the graphics are amazing, I definitely recommend this title. Everything might not be as perfect as we had hoped, but at least Bungie tried something different. In the future, competitors in the FPS genre will be assuredly be trying to lift some of the ideas from Destiny to add some mmo-ness into their own games.

As an exclusive PlayStation owner, I've never had the opportunity to play Halo. I've seen game play footages and loved the art direction and game mechanics that Bungie has created for Halo. So when I first learned that Bungie was creating a new FPS that will also be released for the PlayStation, I was anxious for the game to come out.

Picking up the game, and playing the first few missions. I felt like this game was going to be great. The game play was smooth, the FPS prospect of it was amazing, and who could complain about the next gen graphics? I couldn't wait to get through the missions, leveling my character and experiencing the end game content.

That was the first day the game came out. Ever since that day. I have no clue what the hell happened. After a few days, I've hit level 20. Yay, right? Unfortunately not. Every single mission that I played through was the same as the previous one. Sure, the scenery has changed; but you're doing the same thing over and over. Not to mention when you beat the final mission, you're left even more clueless. WTF happened/ The story was a piece of crap. I've read better stories on Reddit by users with a better plot and story line than Destiny.

Just to be clear, level 20 isn't exactly the max level you can hit. It's just the max level you can hit by experience. You can actually level up to 30 with gears. In which you can to grind the same mission (weekly heroic/nightfall) or do the same 5 strikes over and over again. You would also think that for the strikes that requires PS+ and a group of 3 to play together. That there'd be more of a challenge. But that's not the case with Destiny. It's the same grind and defend and sponge mode boss all over again. At least their raid is fun. After you've ran it once. Then it's all the same thing over and over again.

Another terrible thing about Destiny. Is their RNG. You could run the raid every week and chances are you'll never get the gears that you want, because most of the time it'll just be shards. Legendary cryptarchs rarely drops. So you've left with farming the strikes to get vanguard marks to buy the legendary gears. Too bad they're capped at 100 per week, so you'd have to run the strikes dozens of time per week just to upgrade your character.

There's a lot of things wrong with the game. Lack of story line. Repetitive game play. Daily grind and farming. You could argue that that's all you do with any other RPGs and MMOs The thing is, those RPG and MMOs are actually fun and rewarding with incredible character development. Destiny is none of those things.

Another thing is.. people tend to call Destiny an MMO. I can't say that it is. You're grouped with 2 other people for strikes and the weekly nightfall. You're group with 5 others for the raid which you can only run once per week. You can group with 2 others to do patrol (all of which are the same). And there's a limit of 16 people total that can be in the tower (that you can't even communicate with). So no, it's far from an MMO.

Also, I'm not buying that there's more content in future DLCs and that Bungie plans for Destiny to be a 10 year game. No, I spent $67 on Destiny, I expect $67 worth of a game without the need to pay more just to get more of the game that should have been there from the start.

It spent a small fortune. And Destiny has lots of promise. The worlds are large and open as well as visually stunning. The mechanics are standard for anyone familiar with Halo multiplayer with some twists. Combat is familiar with responsive weapons each with their own feel and super moves that add variation and enjoyment. Movement is easy with a combination of gliding, double jumping, and star wars style speeders. And you have the ability to customize you're guardian with three classes and an array of visual aesthetics. But when you get to the heart of it, aesthetics and visual appeal are what Destiny is all about. It looks good and feels good at first until you realize what's missing. This is highlighted by the ship you fly. You can buy new ships which you can use to... distract yourself from the frequent load screens you'll be experiencing. You also have your choice of weapons to choose from: a 5 round revolver (why would guns evolve to less efficient?), a semi-auto rifle, or a single action rifle. Three distinct main weapon types is all. But wait, there are the special weapons: the overpowered shotgun, an efficient sniper rifle, or the almost useless in multiplayer fusion rifle. Plus a rocket launcher or machine gun for a heavy weapon. You cannot customize these, merely unlock perks already loaded to certain weapons, so if you like the way a low level weapon's scope felt, it may take a while to get that feeling again. There are a few multiplayer modes but only and handful of stages and no character progression. To be accurate, your multiplayer character is the same as your single player character. You do get multiplayer specific marks to buy high level gear but there are definitely a limited number of sets and high level players begin to look very similar. Get a good shotgun and you can easily dominate or you'll find yourself waiting by the heavy ammo spawn because they always drop at the same locations. When you do well in multiplayer you may not be rewarded with a drop. The rewards are based on how often you play, not necessarily how well. As far as the single player story, Peter Dinklage is the highlight and even he can tend to drone on (pun intended). The missions are highly repetitive. For one, you start are the same points depending on the world you're on. You use your speeder to fly back to familiar spots, crawl through a cave filled with the same enemies throughout the rest of the world you're on, then mow down wave after wave (and sometimes a giant boss with a longer life bar) while your Ghost phases into objects to download the next file to explain something that doesn't make complete sense unless you go to Bungie's website to read the extensive lore. To be fair, the lore IS extensive, but presented in such a passive manner that it's largely unappreciated. It highlights how awkwardly the story is presented. You're highly customized guardian is largely silent and always emotionless. His or her story is fairly mundane for a game called Destiny. Lastly, the most egregious error is that Destiny is released as a game that's DLC maintained. The game wasn't complete at the time of release or even adequately tested. There's story content promised for a subscription fee and multiplayer content, weapons, and drops are all still being adjusted and nerfed. Wanting to adjust mechanics and gameplay to improve the experience is one thing, but Destiny's creators seem to lack a clear endgame (again pun intended). The events are admirable attempts to keep people playing mirrored after ME3's multiplayer challenges. Unfortunately, rewards require hours of participation to yield significant rewards and the replay value is lower than COD or BF because multiplayer lacks customization or valuable rewards. It's an attempt to mix the Halo multiplayer experience with that of other first person shooters that results a moderately enjoyable, unmemorable, and fairly unrewarding experience. At level 28 (of 30) with the campaign finished, most of the group raids run, and hours of multiplayer are under my belt, I'm profoundly disappointed with this new IP. Many are defending Destiny by saying it's going to get better or more content is coming or it's unfair to give a bad score because it's not finished. I think it's only right to give Destiny a score for what it is and not what it can be or what we or Bungie want it to be. Expand

There's very little variation on the same theme. In fact, every mission within a world starts at the same spot so you ride the same path to the next part of the dungeon you just crawled through. The end of the campaign is as unremarkable as your nameless and almost voiceless champion. The multiplayer is adequate but nothing special with no progression and loot drops that seem independent of you actual performance. It doesn't stack next to the playability of the other top tier first person shooters. The game has its share of server glitches. Bungie continues to tweak guns for pvp, often overdoing it. The reward system is a tad daft. You can't play the character you choose and expect to max out your level with skill. It's luck. The game gave me gear for classes I was not playing and so my chosen class remains at 29 and the secondary characters have gear that will level to 30. I added these characters simply to make use of the gear that dropped for them.

People with more skill and more hours than I have get barely any good drops and are also thwarted from leveling up.

While the dlc is held out as more content is coming, it is hard to see how a few more maps and a raid are going to patch up the non existent story and barren gameplay environments.

And sound. How is it that huge monsters can stomp up behind you and not be heard?

Just there. It's not a bad game and for some reason I keep going back to it just pushing a bit further, but none of the expectations I had for this game were met. Single player missions felt repetitive and the story still does not make any sense.

On the other hand, strikes are enjoyable and raids are challenging. And while we wait for the big November releases, this is an ok option.

Over-hyped. I've played way more the 20 hours...The feel of the guns are spot on, just nothing new about them and little to choose from. For a futuristic fighter one would have thought the weaponry would have been up to speed. After getting your first player level 24+ , doing it again for another just seems like a waste of time. First of all, to get the negatives out of the way. The first thing that should strike you is the generic-ness of it - we land on Mars, in what could be a lovely homage to classical sci-fi, but instead we get a bland and basic lecture about The Darkness, which is supposedly engulfing Light, and then you're thrust into the game with The Fallen chasing you with no explanation as to who they are or why they're dangerous, or what they're even for. An excellent demonstration of what we're to expect - embarrassing nomenclature combined with factions and backstory that aren't included in the game itself, you have to go to their website to read up on it.

Undoubtedly a beautiful game, the graphics are wasted on dull level designs, lacking in any significant character. Perhaps my favourite of all of them was Venus, though even that lacked anything that distinguished it from any other garden or jungle type map in any other game. The influences of The Vex on the planet seemed negligible. Nothing seemed to indicate any kind of culture - The Hive's possessed places were identical to that of The Fallen's, only with squishy grey pods on the wall. They all occupied human buildings and never seemed to expand on their own or give themselves any characterisation beyond a different model to shoot at.

It's also disappointing that there are only 4 total free-roam locations, and all of them quite small. There's nothing more annoying than having such a visually stunning game be limited so severely, especially when you spend most of your time inside stock sci-fi metal corridors anyway. The Nav System is practically useless and you can't access any sort of a map, so good luck getting lost while trying to explore for the sake of exploring. You'll be backtracking a lot, and it'll lose a lot of its sense of wonder.

Your character classes are also superfluous, and don't seem to matter. Usually you would need a balanced party to succeed in any serious dungeon-delving experience in any other game like this, but it doesn't seem so here. The classes seem superficially different, with all the same types of skills - a grenade, a double jump, a melee augment, etc. It makes forming a team less fun.

Peter Dinklage's voice acting is also unremarkable, and I chalk this down to bad directing. I understand that behind the mic is a lot different than in front of a camera, but there's no way this man can deliver such excellent performances in the T.V. series and movies that we've seen and yet fall down at even the most basic lines here.

Loot is also randomised, with even Legendary Engrams (item schematics you get decoded into random items) turning up something useless. I trust anybody who's played an MMO shouldn't need the reasons why this sucks explained to them. It does seem Bungie are working on fixing this, though, so that might be a temporary complaint.

I think what makes this game is that it has serious potential. I played it and got hooked, but found everything so... lacking. I'm keeping on with it because I genuinely want to see what Bungie have left to unveil.

The designs for the world, the characters, avatars,, everything is AAA. It looks amazing and I challenge anyone to stand on the moon and look up and not think that it is one of the most beautiful skies designed to date.

Additionally the gunplay and feel is fantastic. While feeling familiar, there are still enough nods to future tech to give new satisfying feelings (the Ice Breaker cool down is very cool). While some of the weapons feel under powered, and others a little overpowered, the gun element is nearly on par with the Battlefield series.

As I said, I really want to love this game. But it seems like Bungie want me to just walk away from this game and give up. For all the fun they bring with the gun play and the beauty they deliver with their world creation, they manage to undermine it all with repetitive gameplay, boring bounties, vendors selling weapons/gear well below your level, and a RNG that is so random it makes a monument to Abraham Lincoln's hunk of watermelon seem methodical.

    The Story

The story is just poor. Bungie do not want to hold the gamer's hand but this doesn't mean you can fore-go basic story telling elements. As a Guardian you are plopped into the middle of a massive war between light and dark, never once asking "What the hell is going on!!! Why is it several hundreds years after I was alive?!! What is all this?!!" Nope, you just seem to accept this crazy world and get on with murdering various races without questioning which side is actually good and bad. What makes the story worse is that you feel massive chunks have been torn out of the main arc - leaving gaping holes and many puzzled faces (I assume). The story is one of the biggest downsides, especially considering what Bungie did with the HALO series.

    PVE

The open world is at first a great experience. The patrols on the various planets allow you to explore and take part in the fun public events. The seamless interaction with friends (not randoms as it is impossible to speak to non fireteam members) needs to be applauded. The fact that you can join a friends game easily is a great addition. But once you have done the same missions/bounties for the nth time the PvE starts to get a little dull. Sure you have one raid to build up to, but you may find that this soon becomes a tedious task of farming for materials and xp, instead of a game of exploration and cooperation.

    PvP

Many have enjoyed the multiplayer element, and the crucible can be fun for people who enjoy arena style gaming. It is however weighed down by the lack of maps, rotation, and game modes. Additionally the use of supers in PvP has been an interesting addition allowing even poor players to have a moment of glory. However the four game modes are not that entertaining and the 6v6 feels a little old gen (but I know it is key to arena style MP). The PvP falls behind the likes of CoD and BF. The worst part of PvP appears to be the hit detection, which seems to lag behind. This coupled with a poor matchmaking system can make the PvP experience a frustrating one.

Overall the PvP is a weak feature, especially when you realize that map voting, or even map indication (which map is up next) is not available for the mode.

    Special Events

To date we have had 2 special events, the Queen's Wrath and the Iron Banner. Both had lukewarm receptions. Certainly neither event can be considered a success for player satisfaction or even for gameplay diversity. The Queen's Wrath had similar bounties and mission than the PvE and the Iron Banner was a failed attempt to 'make power count' and utilized only the control game mode.

    Bungie

One of the most disheartening parts of this game is Bungie itself. It seems that instead of fixing the issues of repetitive gameplay, maps, rng, and missed rewards for completed bounties/missions, they are instead fixing things that aren't actually issues (such as the game not being random enough for their liking). Every Friday you will get an update from the community manager, and every Friday you will sigh in disbelief at the latest issue they have 'fixed'.

    Wait and see

What may annoy you is the constant talk of how this is the vanilla platform of a massive MMO that will last a decade. if you are not willing to spend 60 euros on a game that is essentially just a vanilla platform then you should not even consider this game. the time you will have to invest, not to mention the money, may not align with what the game gives you.

    Overall

I want to love this game. I want the hours I have sunk into it to be meaningful. But I feel that Bungie are not sure where this title will go and the current content is repetitive and shallow. Wait until the new year and see what the new DLC brings. If that changes the game and adds diversity then this game will be worthwhile, otherwise invest in Halo and BF.

The story is vapid at best. The strikes are all the same "Go here and kill this guy" formula. The story missions are just as repetitive. Missions on patrol are bland. If you love RPGs because of the immersion you get from the rich story telling and the lore, you will not get that here. Anybody who claims this is flat out lying to you. This game has virtually no immersion at all. It is a dressed up shooter with some RPG elements. I really hope this is resolved with future content.
The most disappointing thing about this game is its unrealized potential. They should have ditched the Grimoire and put those resources into writing a decent story. Everything is in place for this to be a great game, but as it sits, this game is just a good game.

The story is practically non-existent and the little plot that is there is confusing. The dialogue is corny and even a five year old would find it patronising, the writer has done a truly awful job. The setting itself is actually fairly well designed, but the potential of the Universe they've created only multiplies the frustration that they've done nothing useful with it. Enemy designs in particular are interesting but soon get old and more difficult enemies consist of the same tired old designs with a yellow health bar or minor skin altercations to create bosses. The four planets are well detailed and each feels very distinct. The class system in Destiny is where this game excels, the breadth of variety offered throughout the classes and subclasses allows the player to experiment and is the only part of the game which provides a genuine motivation to keep playing the same bland missions over and over again. Bungie were once the Kings of competitive multiplayer on consoles and I'm sad to say they've well and truly forfeited that crown; Crucible is nothing short of a shambles. It's hard to know where to begin when critiquing it. I'll start with balance, or should I say the lack of it. While constantly in a state of flux from patches it's safe to say from release up until this point the balance in the Crucible has been appalling. Early offenders included the Blade Dancer ability which effectively turned you into a teleporting nigh unstoppable living lightsaber, this is one of the few problems which Bungie have managed to fix. The crowning achievement however among dozens of examples I could use was the Vex Mythoclast, the most unintentionally overpowered weapon I've ever seen in a competitive multiplayer first-person shooter all the way back to Goldeneye. The map designs aren't awful but many of them feed into a larger problem which Bungie have been unable to address; that shotguns are too powerful and easy to use. Allow me to explain, despite two attempts to nerf the shotguns at release and recently with a range reduction shotguns still manage to dominate the Crucible with players opting to almost solely use this class of weapon. They effectively work similarly to the shotgun found in the Halo games and in theory that should work, however this isn't Halo. The constant ability to sprint combined with several abilities such as blink that makes it much easier to close down your opponent without them having the opportunity to defend themselves make the shotguns undoubtedly broken. The entire premise of shotguns in multiplayer is that they're deadly in close range but the time it takes to close down your target gives the other player the opportunity to defend themselves. Destiny doesn't give the other player adequate opportunity to defend themselves and this is inherently the problem with shotguns. Now to get back to the maps, the reason the maps aid this is due to the amount of cover and obstacles that make killing an opponent from range significantly more difficult. With maximised recovery it is far too easy to escape any battle which isn't going your way and have another bite of the cherry a mere few seconds later once you are back to full health. The inherent verticality of some maps and the density of cover such as on Twilight gap combined with abilities such as Blink make escaping any time you come under fire far too easy. Players should be punished for making tactical mistakes and leaving themselves exposed but this is rarely the case in Destiny and it is one of the most forgiving competitive shooters I've ever played. The most clear cut and easy criticisms to make of the Crucible that require no significant amount of playtime to get to grips with is the lack of game modes. Four game modes is embarrassingly shallow for any game, especially one focused so heavily on multiplayer aspects of the game. To top it all off they add a fifth game mode every so often called Salvage as a special treat which feels more like a patronising and harsh slap in the face. Even with so many complaints Destiny's ultimate failure is that a game that revolved around the idea of bringing players together has such a barren set of social features. Clans are limited to one hundred members and there is absolutely no way to organise with your clan in game. Instead you must organise your clan from Bungie's own website, that in itself isn't too bad but the inability to even see your clanmates in a list in-game is unforgivable. The much touted Tower is also nothing more than a glorified dance floor where social interaction is limited to waving and kicking a ball around. While I wish I could talk more about this games many flaws and indeed it's positives I have run out of characters, as a parting note I'll simply say that the enjoyment will come from playing with friends rather than any intelligent game design. With the loss of Joe Staten, Lead Writer, a year before launch and the legal issues with Marty (composer) it seems that what we were supposed to receive and what we did receive were two VERY DIFFERENT THINGS. The game appears to have been butchered and bastardized by the monetization division of Activision - cutting all meaning out of the game to be sold in some odd fashion as DLC.

A terrible disappointment for those of us who actually thought that there would be something of significance in Destiny. I look forward to seeing what Joe Staten will do with Game of Thrones with Telltale, where writing is valued.

The games multiplayer is exactly what I was expecting, it is Halo meets Modern Warfare, with a WoW style reward system. The patrols are fun, and have decent rewards built in. The story is horrible, but it's an FPS, and I didn't expect much. If you are expecting a groundbreaking, mind blowing experience, look elsewhere. But at the moment the plot is quite common and forgettable.
The gameplay is easy to manage and fun to play, (we didn't expect less from the creators of Halo) and every FPS users will master it pretty quickly. The graphics are great (specially the light effects), so are the OST and artistic direction (i pictured the Moon exactly the same way it is in Destiny).
Now to the bad points , if you play all the campaign you will have the impression to do the same mission again and again in different locations (except one little phase) and that can be boring especially if you don't play with friends (if you are there is always the thrill of being part of a team to spice the experience). The level-up system is a bit strange once you reach level 20 and it will depend of your luck in looting Legendary items, maybe i just have to get use to it but for the moment it bothers a me a little (you kill bosses and don't gain XP, it feels wrong to me). And finally the PvP mode is really horrible for newcomers, there is absolutely none balancing, if your opponents are 10 levels above yours they'll probably kill you in one shot while you'll have to empty your mag on them in the hope of killing them. Once you're in the big levels it's the most classic PvP you can encounter.

Despite those huge flaws i had fun playing Destiny (especially with friends) and that's why i'm not giving a bad mark. In the hope that future DLCs will really improve the solo experience and be affordable.

Having played Last of Us to death on ps3 i deceided to dive straight in and start playing "Destiny". Now, let me tell you the good stuff first, since there is unfortunetly so little of it. As i was used to ps3 graphics and never played a ps4 before, this game visual presentation was earth shattering . Everything is absolutely gorgeous in this game. Truly "next gen". The textures used are insanely detailed, with beautiful lighting effects. Everything just is what you always hoped gaming would be one day since you first played that humble little Nintendo in 1985. and everything is running silky smooth with no fps slowdowns once. Amazing indeed.
Next Gunplay. Absolutely nailed it. Best gunplay i have had since, well, ever on any Playstation. That combined with the new ps4 controller and you have gameplay as smooth as butter. I really understand now why some Xbox only gamers have had so much love for Halo. Shooting and aiming guns is very satisfying and well above the standard.
The last good point i would like to point out is the amazing Hollywood blockbuster style soundtrack. You just have to hear it.
And that is about all the positive stuff i can tell you about this game.

The negative list is quite a bit longer s i am sorry to say.
The story is pure rubbish. Pure and utter crap, scraped from the bottom of the cheapest cliche barrel they could find. Let me give you an example here: the good guys are "The Light", and the bad guys "The Darkness". Yeah, no kidding. "The Darkness" is then sub divided in even more cliche sub factions such as "the Hive", "The Fallen" etc. This in itself would not be such a problem if there was actually a story to follow, but there isn't. To actually learn something about these factions, or anything for that matter, you will have to pause the game and head to a website and read the lore there. Serious, that is what you have to do. hardly any ingame story. And since i simply refused to get my story from a website out of priciple, all i was left with was basically a polished up 2014 version of space invaders. What little story there is ingame however is the worst of the worst. It explains nothing. You where dead, but was revived somhow after a few hundred years, yet no one bothers to explain it to me how or why. Later on in the game a character pops up and starts talking to me as if we know each other, but i never have seen her in my game once. Says she is too busy to explain or some crap like that and vanished. lol WTF?? She did give a gun when i "finished" the game though, which was nice i guess. And it goes on and on. The story simply makes no sense and is a huge let down. I actually think they would have been better off just cutting the story alltogether and make this a straight up hardcore shooter.

Then there is the voice acting. And boy, is it bad.
Bungie somehow managed to grab everyones favorite member of the Lannister family, Tyrion, aka Peter Dinkelage. And i am sorry to say, he blew it, and he blew it big time. I dont know if this is because of a lack of directing, or because he simply sucks as a voice actor. But he is so bad i wished he would stfu allready.
He plays this "ghost" which looks a bit like "Wheatley" from Portal 2. And he must surely be one of the most annoying game characters ever made by man. Play it, and you will find out because i just cannot bring myself to be so critical of the excelent Tyrion. Lets just say Peter Dinkelage is no Ashley Johnson / Troy Baker when it comes to voice over work.

Mission design is pathetic. Simplel as that. There are literally 2 "quests" in this game. Kill wave after wave, also known as point defense, horde mode etc. and there is kill the boss, which is pure bullet sponge tank and spank crap. That is all there is too it. No escort, no chases no nothing. It is embarassing to be honest.
Loot is hardly dropped by mobs make it even more boring than it already is, so you need to grind reps to get gear. There are a few daily "quests" to help you along though to obtain it a little faster. Fun quests such as KILL 10.000 guardians, no kidding. Make no mistake, this is grinding original everquest style.
It was after i read that quest btw that i ejected the game and traded it in for something else.

TLTR; this game is a complete outhouse of a mess. Stay away

Destiny has beautiful visuals, and the best FPS controls and feel of any FPS I've ever played. It's the first time anything like this has been done on console. And it's fantastic and fun.

    FULL REVIEW:

This game honestly deserves an 8 or 9, but I'm giving it a 10 to offset the stupid butt-hurt people who gave it a zero for no other reason than their personal spite. That is not how critiquing works. Just because you want your money back doesn't mean you go and unfairly evaluate the game itself and the work that went into it. There are very few games that deserve zeros. This is not one of them. This is a well-made fantastic game. I enjoy playing it.

Was it a let down? Yes, a little bit. A lot more was promised. But what was delivered still is pretty amazing. I am no fanboy of Bungie. I don't even like Halo very much. But this game combines all the interesting parts of MMORPG's and FPS's, and takes out the boring parts of both.

Do you have to grind in this game? Yes. But that's natural in an MMO. If getting exotic/end-game weapons, armor, and materials were easy, people would complain about how easily they acquired end-game items. Grinding doesn't detract from this game in my opinion. Compare the grinding in Destiny to the grinding in other MMO's like WoW. In other MMO's when you need to grind, you point and click. Point and click. Point and click. In Destiny, you aim, shoot, hide, etc... it's SO much more engaging and active. Especially when grinding in the Crucible (multiplayer).

As for the story, that is the only thing that makes me want to give the game an 8 instead of a 10. The story, well, sucks. Apparently there were higher-ups that caused a lot of issues and the story was reduced to what it is now. BUT, I'm confident they've learned what they did wrong. And I keep hearing a lot of people comparing this game to Halo and saying how Halo's story was so much better. Okay? We knew less about the covenant and Master Chief at the end of Halo: Combat Evolved than we do about the alien races in Destiny.

There are quite a few other minor issues with the game, but I will not go into them because they are the types of things Bungie is already fixing through updates. (Also typical of ANY new MMO)

This game in way, shape, or form deserves a 0. Or even a 3. There are so many worse games that deserve those numbers that were clearly made without any effort or thought. Destiny looks, and even feels like a 10-year love-letter project from Bungie. If there was someone to point fingers at for the story, it's Activision. But we have them to thank for the beautiful FPS controls. It is very obvious from the start that this game was not made in haste or without care. So don't treat it like it was. It's sad to see so many fellow gamers reduced to little cry-babies when they spent their money without reading reviews first and then complain they didn't get what they wanted. Sowwy wittle gamer babies, the world doesn't revolve around you ;)

This is a game targeted to audiences that thrive on multiplayer, co-op and online battles. I don't judge these type of gamers, I am only saying that for me gaming is an art better experienced single. Destiny is beautiful, its gameplay works very well and I have been impressed how easy it is to get hooked with this game. I found myself at awe with the planets and the locations and as a sci-fi enthusiast I have to say it's very impressive indeed. The servers seem to work well. I played with some of my friends online and it went smoothly but after a dozen of hours in, that was it for me. The end. I tried and tried to find purpose in what I was doing, but there is no purpose in this game. No interesting characters, the characters are fellow gamers from around the world that roam around the planets (sounds nice as an idea but not for me). The locations although beautiful repeat themselves and there is a lot of backtracking.

If you want a good story please stay away and save your money. This is a ''starter pack'' for sure to be updated with billions of DLCs. Clever move from Bungie and Activision to make money on top of their final product but I am a romantic gamer who apparently learns from his mistakes and returned this game. The fellow gamer who enjoys online gaming and will pick it up will have a blast. I was disappointed.

Yes there are the Grimoire but who reads it? Who ever made the decision to make it out of game was an idiot. Did you not play Mass Effect and seen it's Codex? THAT IS HOW YOU DO IT!!! The Speaker does no effort to explain anything just says words that have no sense. Missions have some background for why are you doing them but it's one of two go kill some guy or deffend Dincklebot. There is some customization and the RPG element is ok but it's not enough for a game that claims to be a singleplayer/mmo type game.
Story is short and boring with a lazy ending which screams DLC.
The MMO aspect is also weak. The matchmaking in Crucible is terrible. When I was lvl 10-15 being match against guys lvl 24+ is just stupid. You should be matched with people with a 2-3 lvl difference not higher. No traiding even with friends or with people in your fireteam? The socialhub is not impressive a lot of unused space which looks preaty and does nothing.
After patch the loot/engram drops are better now you have a chance to get something good from an legendary engram.
The gunplay is solid. It's HALO in it's best with HALO looking mobs. You have a lot of fun blowing up and killing stuff. There are not that much different guns but it's ok for now. Hope to see some more weapons in the expanssions or DLC.
The things I enjoy in Destiny are strikes, bountys and the reputation system. This Bungie did well. The Strikes could have been more varied but it's good. You feel the need to grind to get better gear, to kill the next mob/boss/ultra. There is great potential in this game. It needs more polish and content.
For now it's a 6 out of 10. Have fun playing it but the game needs more. Bought it new for 34£ and still on the fence if it was worth it or not.

The worst thing any developer can do is pack a game of this genre full of content at release when it has no idea whether it will be a success or not. Such implementations are almost impossible to reverse. Instead, what we have is a fun, solid shooter, with no flaws which simply carries an air of not being quite there yet.

People are upset because they don't know what's about to happen. Perhaps Bungie should be doing a better job of keeping its players in the loop. Not everyone is willing to grind out reputation or varying different components and currencies for different factions for seemingly no reason! And more guns! Players like content, and in a shooter, guns are surely the best kind. There are too few uncommons and rares, and no excuses for it.

I don't know what it is Bungie is doing, but seem less improvements need to be made - and fast. Lest this game sadly dies forever...

I bought this game with very high expectation. The quality is perfect but the game play is not that surprised. As other people said, it has no differences with other FPS game. After two weeks playing, I turned to my previous mobile game Rush of Rune and give Destiny up.

After completing the Vault of Glass for three weeks in a row all I have to show for it is a pair of gloves, a ship (which is purely cosmetic), a shader (which is purely cosmetic), and a boat load of Ascendant Shards I can't use to upgrade anything because the game won't GIVE me anything to use them on.

If you're into grinding over the same content over and over again with little to show for it then this is the game for you. If you want to feel like you're accomplishing anything for your time this is not the game for you. Especially with the non-existent story.

The only question I have to ask is... What did they spend the 500 million on? Graphics and marketing?

I'll summarize the gameplay: It's FANTASTIC! Possibly the best shooting mechanics I have ever played.

Leveling up? It's fun and rewarding. The classes could use more variation, but you're going to like the class you chose.

Loot? Annoying, but it has a system that works, but can be vastly improved.

No voice chat? I actually found that to work well. I found the bond between me and my strike team to be a lot better when we couldn't communicate. I don't know if there is voice chat now, or if there ever was, but so far none of my teams could speak. I felt that was awesome.

Now, on to my main part:

Multiplayer? It's not the best, but it is really fun.

    SETTING:

Destiny offers promise, but doesn't deliver. This game sets itself up to be a huge open world MMO. The worlds look stunning. The only problem is, it doesn't feel like it's an open world once you start delving into it a lot more.

The worlds, like I said, are great, but there are so many invisible walls! I know, many games have invisible walls. Fallout New Vegas, one of my favorite RPG's, has them. But here, they are put in the wrong places. There are also many areas that look like you can go into them, but only for me to find out that I died as soon as I stepped foot in it.

I was on my sparrow on mars. I was riding around, and I found these HUGE sand dunes. I wanted to be a badass and jump over them. only to find out there was a height limit. I couldn't go over them. I was on the moon, and there was a huge crater. It looks shallow enough for me to step in. I went in, and I died after it showed me a TURN BACK message.

It makes Destiny's open world feel like a hand-held path. Sure, you can go left or right, but I want to go up or down. You have to follow their path.

Open world's allow you to go in any direction. Is there a tunnel with level 500 enemies but you're only level 5? You really want to explore the area ahead though? Go over the tunnel if you can. You found an exploit that allows you to climb very steep mountains? No one's gonna patch it. Climb the mountain! The open world's feel like they just want to lead you through it.

    STORY:

Now, you've heard negative things about the story. And I'm sorry, guys, but I've read every Grimoire cards. I still have more questions than answers. Why am I here? Where did the hive originate?

I know future content is being added, but I feel like it's gonna be the same as the current game. Do the mission, read the mission summary, now you have more answers with Grimoire Cards. It's annoying, and looking at the glitch that shows the future content, it looks like it will be that way from out the menus look.

You have no motivation. Your character has no motivation. In a logical sense, my character could say, "Yeah you chose me. You're not explaining things to me. There are millions of other guardians. I'm gonna go to the city, rent an apartment, and chill out there. They can do the job unless you can explain these things tome. And don't say you don't have time to explain why you don't have time to explain." That last line was in the actual game. They have the AUDACITY to say they don't have time to explain why they can't explain.

Overall, it's a fun game to play, but you find yourself finding no reason to play it. It feels like it's pretending to be open world, and you have no motivation to kill these monsters you are fighting. I'm not recommending it. Maybe check it out in the future if they add content, but don't buy the current game.

I've been playing Destiny since release. I hadn't heard anything about this game before I got it, and I've never played Halo before. I had no expectations before I started, and I saw right away that this game has potential for unlimited expansions.

The game looks pretty, and you get a feeling you're in the world of which Destiny takes place. A world based on the solar system. For such a small game, it seems very big, and it can expand as Bungie wants. The first and foremost feature of Destiny is the co-operation. You can play story, strike, raid and crucible with your friends. This feature is intertwined very well and is the strongest feature of Destiny alongside the visual graphics.

The crucible is the player vs. player part of the game, and most of it is entertaining. There are several modes to play, like Control, which is not so good, mostly because of imbalance in some of the maps, which makes it much more challenging just because you were assigned to the wrong side. The maps with the worst balance from my experience is Firebase Delphi, Mars and Blind Watch, Mars, in if you start at the wrong team, you get a much harder challenge to win. The Clash which is 6 vs. 6 is enteraining all the way, and usually never boring. The salvage I tried but the teams I've met have been so much more superior that I haven't really got into it enough to say how entertaining it is. Skirmish I have not tried yet, but it is 6 players everyone vs. everyone.

Controls in Destiny is not the best. Your run is on your control button, L3 by default and it seems a very weird choice after playing it for weeks. The rest of the controls seems fine.

The content of Destiny story-wise is crippled into the story already starting off the wrong way compared to what was planned. The breeds different stories are merged into one breeds story and there are cut-scenes taken out of the game because story is taken out of the game. The original plan seems to be ditched in order for this game to be released.

Destiny also have problems when playstation network is having problems, and Destiny also have problems with their own servers in periods.

Lagging players also causes issues to balance when they are lagging in crucible making games less entertaining.

All in all Destiny has a solid base to be something more, but currently is not.

Bungie also have a few things to explain with their current campaign Iron Banner and their Level Advantages Enabled, which according to experience and other players impression is so small that it can't be noticed for any difference. I also have this impression after hours after hours playing Iron Banner.

I don't know who's in charge of Destiny and what content it should have, but for Destiny to last, they should probably looks for a new coordinator.

Sadly, the positives end there. This is a game with very poor design. The missions/quests are repetitive and uninteresting. The story is completely forgettable at all points during the narrative. The weapon types are limited, making it far less interesting than Borderlands (a series it's commonly compared to). The world is basically a few small-scale zones where a few random players are throw in together.

This is a game that has a bright future with tons of additions, but sadly I lost any interest in playing beyond the first week.

I'm not sure you can call the story a story, you're not really given any insight into the game world at all besides the fact that "you're the good guy, they're the bad guys and you have to kill them".

Then we have the missions, which are repetitive and boring to say the least. You fight your way through waves of enemies, deploy the Ghost and defend it against even more waves of enemies while it scans a certain object. That's pretty much what happens 95% of the time.

The multiplayer is barely okay, it didn't manage to keep me playing after the fiasco that was the story. The loot system in the multiplayer has gotten a lot of critique for the fact that players joining a few minutes before the end of a match (also players with really bad K/D) will end up getting the best loot. With player at the top of the scoreboards getting normal loot at best.

There's also the raid/strike missions, which sees you fighting wave, after wave, after wave of enemies and eventually a boss. But the loot you gain for the amount of effort you put into them is little at best.

All in all, Destiny had the potential to be a great game, but ended up being an overhyped game that failed to live up (or even come close) to the expectations.

If you're planning on buying Destiny, all I can say is save you money for something else, Destiny is not worth it. If you really want it you'd do best to pick it up when it's on sale.

At random you can get kicked out of the destiny servers in the middle mission which they released a patch to fix. You have to be online at all times to play which is stupid beyond any belief. And then after you hit lvl 20 guess what you get to grind for light armor which is a terrible system. And then there are the engrams which are given through a random number generator that shown several times to favor people who do terrible in multiplayer or a mission and give the people who did good nothing. And then in crucible which is one of the only redeeming values in this game is currently filled with fusion rifle users that do one hit-kills and hunters using the subclass Blade Dancer that needs to be nerfed immediately. Also the bosses... I have never in my life seen bosses this poorly done in my life as a gamer I mean this is bad very very bad Spoiler btw the final boss (if you can even call it that) is literally 3 minotaurs which are basically Vex Captains and that is the boss ladies and gentlemen, the fight was so bland and easy that my friend decided to start jumping in front of the bosses to make the fight more exciting. And even before fighting the 3 enemies that are together the collective boss you don't actually fight the main villain which is the darkness it just explodes after you kill the minotaurs leaving the player sitting their in confusion thinking "really that's it". Also on a final note you build bonds other than bonds of hatred towards any character in this game your own vanguards barely speak to you the gunsmith is useless after lvl.16-18 the cryptarch is just an **** who will decode engrams that you finally get after killing so many enemies and can give you equipment that is a lower lvl and finally the mysterious stranger exo chick adds almost nothing to the plot. And finally the biggest thing that really isn't explained is the Traveler, in the entirety of the story you are never once told what the Traveler is capable of doing, how the Traveler exactly preforms it's miracles, and how it's even still alive when it's main enemy forces are surrounding it. From beginning to end not once is the Traveler acted by any of the enemy forces and one of them have the ability to destroy planets or move them at will and not once do they do this even they easily could. So in conclusion I give this game a 4/10 ONLY because it can be entertaining....if you have friends playing as well, it functions for the most part, and that before the Blade Dancer fad appeared Crucible was balanced for the most part. This game is pretty much a poor mans Borderlands. Its simple. Kill enemies, get loot, kill more enemies, get "better" loot that is just a reskin of previous loot, but with a different color.

Missions are literally the same thing over and over again. Kill waves of enemies, protect the robot or kill waves of enemies while protecting the robot. or kill waves of enemies, while protecting the robot while fighting a boss. THis is just flat out terrible and being lazy.

No, MatchMaking or LFG. When you get to the end game content, you better have friends who own and play Destiny, because if you don't, you are pretty much beat and wont eb able to beat any of it. Other players are already in Strike Teams, so its pretty much impossible to do any of the end game content...unless you enjoy leaving and coming back and leaving and coming back to your home planet just to invite people to your strike team in hopes of them actually joining it.

PVP is horrible, they refuse to fix any of the issues. Supers and radar are just ridiculous in PvP and everybody just abuses it. I would really like a game mode without either but that would be hoping for too much from Bungie. Drop rates on items are better now but getting the best gear has to be done in the raid. I've completed the raid 6 times now on multiple characters (different classes) and have yet to get one piece of armor (only shards and energy). So here I am stuck on the 5th week without having any of the highest light gear. You can imagine how frustrating that can be when most of your friends are level 30 already. But it's ok, I guess you can make another character of the same class to try and get more raid gear. That about sums up how broken the raid is.

Moving on, the one thing I was excited for was Iron Banner event and that is even more broken then standard PVP. Not to mention the fact that it is only control ATM which is by far one of their worst game modes. Everyone just camps back with *wait for it* vex exotic fusion rifles and shotguns. No matter what you do, you can't outdamage a vex exotic rifle in PvP with another primary. Over 200+ crucible and iron banner games and I have yet to get a legendary or exotic drop. Really? I regularly finish at the top of the room only to find out I got nothing for being better than everyone else. But it's ok, we will give that guy who is 4 and 17 an exotic autorifle, he needs it more than you.

To sum it up, this is the most socialist-communist game EVER F***ING MADE that makes everyone just as good as everyone else. It's all about catering to every type of player and making sure no matter how bad you are, you will never be left behind. I'm sorry but I'm sick of games going down this path. This is not how Bungie use to do things especially with the competitive multiplayer system they once had their Halo games.

They keep saying this game will never be like Halo which is a problem because Halo scored near 100/100 scores from many reviewers yet this one is getting barely over 75 from critics. Obviously you aren't doing something right and it shows on your game. The fundamentals are there, the gameplay is there, but the finished product is lacking in any sort of meaningful content besides the same raid you can do every week, the same 6 strikes you can do over and over, and the same broken piece of s*** that is the PvP. I am truly sad that this game didn't reach its potential because I loved all the Halo games. This game just tried to be too many things and cater to too many people instead of doing what it did the best.

If you wonder why I give this game a zero is because the story is clearly not finished and has no purpose, other than to get you to level 20. In general, all the missions have no meaning to it therefore this game has no meaning to me, therefore the zero. Oh, did I mention the PvP? Yeah...so done with this game, what a pile of crap from one of my favorite companies of all time. Oh how times have changed....

The best game I have played in a while, I didn't watch any trailers yet i enjoyed it thoroughly. So long as Bungie doesn't charge an exorbitant amount for dlcs then I would rate this game well.

Hello game Destiny released in 2014, the games from 2000 (or earlier) want their mapping techniques back again when your finished with them. Seriously, losing a bounty because you fell of the massive 6 foot drop, a distance easily jumped, is lame and shows just how poor Bungie have been with this game. I was less critical of this game when I hadn't spent time with it, the more time I spend with it the more I hate it. I so wish I hadn't pre-ordered the digital version, at least you can take the disk back to the store and trade it in for a real game like angry birds. What a heap of sh*&*t. Expand

Game looks great. Game mechanics is solid. The story does not exist. It seems that content was cut presumably to add to the upcoming expansions. No off-line play that becomes a huge problem because the connectivity is flaky especially on the weekends. Nowhere near the campaign content of Halo or any other game I would consider top tier. Bungie has created a new and exciting experience for the FPS genre with Destiny, and once again raising the bar for what to expect with FPS games! Destiny is fun and a much needed breath of fresh of air that the FPS genre was needing for quite some time! Destiny throws out the old "just play multiplayer experience and level/rank up gameplay", and added a whole new element to FPS games: MMORG elements (quests, raids, etc.). These "new " mechanics for an FPS game enhances the value of the game by giving a meaningful purpose to FPS gameplay. "Grinding" is fun and rewarding, but if that isn't your cup of team, Destiny still has a solid multiplayer versus mode (the Crucible) which is similar to traditional FPS "VS mode/matchmaking".

Overall, Destiny is worth the money!

trying to give a objective opinion of this game, i would call it a great game but with alot of areas to be improved on.

At the core, Destiny is a great shooter with great gunplay and cool special powers. The "halo" effect is there but weapons have a greater feel to them, with great animations and sound. This lays the foundation for the entire game, since replaying a mission is stimulating just by the gameplay alone. The loot system furthers this by adding different stats and perks to the weapons. The skill tree is quite similar over the three classes, but small differences seperates the classes, but not enough for it to be a vital decision.

The story in the game is really good, the only, and biggest problem is that the story is badly told and leaves it up to the player to read up on his/her own. This is very similar to games like Dark souls where you as a player get some short cutscene depictning the where too, but not the why. Speaking of the single player campaign, its also vital to point out that the missions are extremly repetative. In lesser games, this would be a real issue, but my oppinion is that Destinys core gameplay is so good, that it helps the repetative story elements to be fun to play through. The story also feels like a way to get to know the gameplay and your class for multiplayer and strike/raids, which is probally where Destiny will continue to grow.

Looking at it from this perspective, its quite clear that the social part of Destiny, playing with friends, is the biggest sell point, but here it falls short yet again thanks to lacking features for pick up groups and other solutions for finding online players to team up with. Should this feature be added, it would lift the game a great deal.

Looking at multiplayer, Halo´s heritage is clear. The gameplay is yet again great, and the action intense. The ability for Bungie to add new modes on the fly makes the game very flexible, and this is why ive given Destiny a high score despite alot of shortcomings. Destiny is best viewed as a platform from which to build. Recommending people to buy a game that in time will be great sounds wierd, but its all there. Great gameplay, great story (in the background), great multiplayer and an addctive loot system makes this game worth buying just for the great fun right now, and the great potential in the coming months/years.

Please remember people, we are playing a FPS-MMO without a monthly fee.

Patience is a virtue and it is time for you young Guardians to learn that you will get from life what you put into life.

This is a good game that will only get better as Bungie puts more and more into it.

Although Destiny isn't the brilliant start to a franchise that many had hoped for, it's a great game for those who can push through its flaws and enjoy the ride.

What is most amazing of all is that despite its litany of weird little problems, Destiny is fantastic, its combat up there with the very best, the thrilling rhythm of its battles still not fading the 30th time through, and it has no single systemic problem that is not fixable. [Dec 2014, p.106]

Destiny is a flawed but still extremely fun first person shooter. While the Destiny universe itself seems intriguing, the storyline is told in such an incoherent manner that it's hard not to be turned off by all the technobabble. Fortunately the co-op shooter mechanics are absolutely perfect. The loot system can be maddening, but in a way it adds to the game's addictiveness. [Oct 2014]
