I played the "Alpha" for a few hours, I put that in quotes because it's not an alpha, it's basically a demo. The public would never be allowed to play an actual alpha.

The enemy spawns are horrendous as they keep respawning so it feels like what you kill doesn't matter. I was literally spawn camping enemies at one point. The classes aren't anything special. I looked over the skill tree and there's not much to even look forward to like you later can triple jump instead of double jump. You can't even sprint while reloading, I figured that would be some lame skill you get later on, but I didn't even see that anywhere. The game has aim-assist, which is totally unneeded and there's no way to turn it off. The sensitivity of the camera is too freaking slow, I maxed it out at 10 and I still wanted it like twice as sensitive. The only plus the game has is that you can slide, which is really only good in competitive MP, not so much vs AI.

It seems like Bungie is trying to make Destiny be everything for everyone while being nothing for no one. They got the MMO and co-op aspect. It seems like they are trying to be a bit like Borderlands with classes and powers. The classes aren't different enough and the powers are very underwhelming. The only place I think the game may actually shine is in competitive because it's a decent-to-good shooter and building up your "power" would be fun in competitive. Even upgrading your skills should work in competitive because none of them will make you overpowered really.

I kinda knew this game would be very underwhelming from last year's E3 developer interview where they were saying as a positive that all the classes weren't very different so you'd never regret making the wrong choice, which defeats the whole purpose of classes. And I remember one of the devs was like "we're Bungie and we make great games, so Destiny is gonna be great." If you focused on making a great game instead of taking that for granted, the game may have actually been great. The most entertaining thing about the whole game were all the voice actors like Peter Dinklage and Gina Torres.I played the "Alpha" for a few hours, I put that in quotes because it's not an alpha, it's basically a demo. It's not that it isn't a 'big' game but it truly does feel "empty". The loot is sub-par and the variations between classes aren't all the game changing. You don't really get the feeling of being 'unique'.. It's more "just run in and shoot" that's it..

    Buy at your own risk.

I would give it a 7-7.5, I gave it a 1 because there are so many biased fanboys just plopping 10's on it for no reason. This game doesn't deserve praise for being a subpar game. The fact that you give crappy games excellent scores is what wrong with the gaming industry. These companies need to understand to not just release pure crap.. Stop being sheeps and demand better from these companies.

Bungie has let us all down.

I am still in the early stages of the game so I cant speak for the content later on but I am hooked. I see myself running late for work, dinner etc. in the coming months because I have to see what is around the corner or down the stairway. It is addictive. The graphics are gorgeous, enemy animation is organic, although when I am at the Traveler and see my character running it looks a little stilted. Why can they not get that right? The level of detail is amazing. The sound of the firefights is spot on but the music is underwhelming. Not bad just not on the same level as the visual presentation. The fodder enemies provide a simple challenge without being pushovers, they will kill you if you are careless. Boss fights are well balanced and challenging. Mind you I am still in the early stages so I haven't encountered many but, I noticed that the attack pattern of the bosses is varied enough that I couldn't special move spam kill them. This is not a loot fest like Borderlands or WOW so if that is what you like be prepared, but you still get cool weapons and armor to upgrade. The biggest complaint that I would have is that the world seems a little empty, but not dead. There are hidden passages all over to take but the enemies inside do not scale to your level so be ready to run if you see something with ??? for levels. You will die. Short story, if you like exploring, leveling, FPS, and fun, get this game. You will not be disappointed. Expand

I'm kind of sick of the "over-hyped" review. I feel like the only reason people fall into this "over-hyped" space is because they didn't take the time to look into the game before release and just imagined a revolutionary game without knowing what to really expect.

Before the game was released, I was super excited for the game, knowing that there's gonna be an fps-mmo-rpg coming. But as soon as I saw beta gameplay, I knew what Bungie was actually going for.

Now this game is no Borderlands (mainly since the story isn't as fun and charming as Borderlands storylines), but it doesn't have to be. Because instead, what they made was a very beautifully (graphically) made fps-rpg game (I've left out the mmo part because it doesnt really feel mmo-y, where you see other players, but treat them like npc's).
The gameplay is great, and the world is just beautiful. Story is... meh (but for an mmo, its up there). I definitely loved the strike missions, but it was pretty silent during the whole thing which undercuts the fun a bit.
This game is definitely a grindfest, if not for levels, for loot. But that's okay, there's always strike missions, and if you want there's multiplayer game modes.

But in conclusion, look at the game before getting it, knowing what to expect. This game is great for the most part, and just falls a little bit in others. Really wished the story was more motivating, just because its Bungie and my expectations were a little high for that. Let's hope Bungie see's their mistakes and just goes up from there.

Those are just hippies being angry, saying how "Bungie mashed Borderlands+Halo together". That doesn't mean it's a bad game. Let's see you hippies make a better and original idea.

I would recommend playing this game with friends (or even just join a Facebook group and add people there) because doing missions solo may be slightly difficult, even if you are at the recommended level. I'm currently level 16 and been enjoying the hell out of this game.

I saw some reviews saying leveling up too fast may hurt in the long run, but I can say it won't because there are going to be a LOT of content for those that are for max level players.

As a MMOFPS/RPG, I'd say Destiny is really successful and satisfies those elements. When you see people saying how it's like any other FPS games, you have to think about this, WHAT ELSE DO YOU WANT FROM AN FPS GAME?! Like seriously, FPS = run, kill, knife, shoot etc. I don't know what these people want from FPS.

I mean yes, Destiny is a great game but doesn't necessarily live up to the hype it had, but it's one hella fun of a game. And honestly, if a game is FUN, it's doing it's job. Just ignore all those idiotic haters and have some fun.

Let me get my biggest criticism out of the way first. Destiny's story is laughably bad. It is honestly one of the worst I've experienced in gaming, which is exacerbated by the voice acting, which feels phoned in and the actors, particularly Peter Dinklage, sound bored and disinterested. There is very rarely a reason for what you are doing that makes sense to the average player. Does this condemn the game to oblivion? Surprisingly, no. Destiny ticks all the boxes for me to hate it but has at its core meaty shooting mechanics, fun character customization, and exploration. The open world may not be as large as Borderlands but it is still quite fun to explore. The game also includes a PvP mode, which is a bit hit or miss. Gun and armor stats are normalized so that the level 5 has a chance of taking down the level 20. This works well. What doesn't work well is the level design. Firebase Delphi is excellent, but all the other maps either feel slightly too small or too big. The only reason I play PvP is to play with more than 3 players, the limit for fireteams in most PvE game modes. Shooting and looting is great fun. The game has the perfect balance of loot, making you work to find the good stuff. Some of the missions are repetitive but they change up the enemy types enough to keep it from becoming stale. All in all, Destiny is a fun, but flawed game. If you are giving it a 10 or a 1 solely based on your pathetic flame war, shame on you. Ignore hype from now on and learn to accept games for what they are. Expand

-The map boundaries in story are quite limited, not entirely open world.
-Loot and fireteam members are hard to find in story mode.
-Progressively less incentive to level up.
-AI is bad, winning hard missions involves exploiting it by finding areas where the AI will not go/be able to shoot you. I think the developers thought that making most AI ranged attacks homing projectiles would allow them to use basic AI shooting tactics.

If you feel like casual, mindless gaming which you can play whilst listening to music when you are bored then this is ideal. This is a good example of why maybe indie games are becoming popular (lack of storyline development over gameplay).

After experiencing buyer's remorse a day after plunking down my $60 on this POS, I was angry enough to create an account and write an honest review devoid of fanboyism and corporate sponsorship. Why do you think there is so much hatred for this game?! People feel RIPPED OFF and are voicing their anger about it. This isn't some troll tactic (or this whole "zero campaign" would have afflicted other games, too), this is how user reviews work: people are voicing their opinions based on their experiences with a product. In this case, I'm ranting about why I feel like this game isn't worth the disc it was printed on. I came in with the expectation of a shooter-MMO and ended up with a half-assed, last-gen console port on my brand new PS4.

    The Good:
    The music is decent

Some of the shooting feels fun (for a few hours)

I didn't experience any major technical hitches online

    The Bad:
30 FPS?! I didn't buy a PS4 to play games at 30 frames per second!

The sparse amount of mute players that flutter around during the campaign - they vanish when they're needed and are just annoying when they're not.

The mission designs are lazy and amateur. I've seen more complexity and encounter structures in the original Everquest from 1999!

Speaking of MMOs, Destiny is NOT an MMO - sure you can /dance emote but that's not what makes an MMO an Massively Multiplayer Online game. There are very few people around (maybe a small handful in the single Tower/Town) and even PvP matches are small-scale. Defiance was a (bug-ridden turd of an) MMO and actually had an open, shared world with hundreds of players. Firefall (PC only) is a shooter-MMO with an open world and hundreds of players sharing it. Planetside is a shooter-MMO (albeit PvP-only). etc. etc. etc. Destiny is a small collection of maps (that are called "planets" or "The Tower") where a few mute players occasionally drive by on their Star Wars SpeederBikes while you shoot waves of identical enemies over and over.

Also, this game is suffering from last-gen-itis. It was definitely made for last gen consoles because all of the limitations were ported "up" to the PS4. Why are we being sold a last gen game for next gen consoles?!

The story is laughably bad. I mean "Magic Missile!" bad. They seriously want me to visit their website to read up on the "lore?" How about you actually let players experience it in the damn game FFS?! Also, Tyrion Lannister as an Asperger's patient squawking in your ear through a malfunctioning auto-tune filter is TV-mute inducing.

There are like 5 enemies in the entire game and you've seen them all about an hour into playtime. Hope you like flying claymore charges and robots with many arms because you'll be fighting them for the entire game (with a few 3D Studio Max primitive spheres thrown in now and then).

Why am I forced to use a f***ing cursor on a console menu?! Who designed this and why are they still employed?

    Bottom Line:
This lazy, sloppy and completely uninspiring game was squeezed out with little to nothing new to offer for its $60 asking price. Seriously, what does this game offer players that older games in this genre don't already do better? All that money clearly went to promoting the game and buying "professional" reviews because it's apparent none of it went to actually making the game.
I really hope this warning reaches someone on the fence and saves them from wasting $60 on this pig with lipstick. Mine's going on Craigslist.

    Wow. That was surprisingly cathartic.

PvP, map designs and shooting mechanics are great. However, repetitive missions and a lack innovation stops this game from becoming a 9 or a 10. We'll have to hope that raids and future DLCs will improve the experience.

After grinding away bitterly, I've found a new enjoyment - simply enjoying the gameplay for what it is with a couple of mates is fantastic fun!

It feels like Bungie has built a framework for something huge, and sold it as a game by tacking together some gamey elements and hyping the crap out of it.

Positive: The gunplay, FPS feel, general gameplay is wonderful. The graphics and sound are excellent.
Negative: It feels empty and soulless at times. It's a feeling brought on by a distinct lack of depth to anything you do. Huge server wait times (some describe these as loading screens). Lifeless tower hub with only a handful of other players there. It's a very clinical, sterile experience.

Loads of potential, fun fun fun at times, but on the hole, a clinical, sterile experience, void of any real creativity, design direction, depth or emotion.

    The Good:
    - The game is absolutely beautiful.
    - I didn't encounter any errors, network or in-game glitches
    - Flawless launch from my perspective.
    - Controls felt very precise and predictable.
    - Fun customization.
    - AI seemed pretty good.

    The Annoying:
    - Horrible load times
    - Unnecessary redundant acknowledgments

    The Bad:
    - Forgettable story
    - It was hard for me to feel invested with any of the characters
    - Linear progression. I guess I've been spoiled by more open worlds in other games so it's hard to get back on the leash.
    - Very easy on "Normal". Just droves of the same enemies. Once I got the hang of it, it was really easy to choose the right weapon and dispatch the enemies with ease.
    - I don't have a huge desire to replay anything other than multiplayer which frankly feels like a spacey, less refined version of Call of Duty. It's still fun though.
    - Their decision to limit open voice chat was odd. Players should be able to choose to mute other players. It makes multiplayer seem rather stale. They could have done some innovative stuff with voice chat and how players interact. Lost opportunity...
    - No real sense of a community within the game so there wasn't any meaningful interaction with other players.
    - At least at the level that I was playing, there doesn't seem to be much strategy outside of multiplayer. You just shoot (a bunch) at baddies. You get hit. Find cover. Wait for health to regenerate. Shoot again. Rinse and repeat 1000s of times.
    - Not too many meaningful choices in class/character customization. It didn't seem to matter what I chose, the game didn't get any easier or harder or even change the way I played.
    - Where are the vehicles and turrets? It would have been a lot more fun to get some serious fire power every once in awhile or change pace by driving around while shooting at stuff. Armed vehicles and turrets only appeared in a couple places.
    - It would also be cool if you could pick up other weapons from bad guys or other players.
    - Other than a few barrels, the environment does not respond to you or your actions.
    - No real innovation in gameplay or mechanics that come to mind.

To summarize, its a fun game and looks great but it feels like Activision/Bungie are trying to make a franchise modeled after the Call of Duty series. In doing so, they compromised the story, limited content and attempted to keep the player happy through upgrade grinding until they release the next expansion. I'm sure its a great business model but I doubt it's very satisfying for the player and I'm sure it wasn't very inspiring for a creative developer. Take Borderlands, the Call of Duty series and Halo, add them together and you get Destiny. In this case, the parts are all greater than the sum. I read that this game cost $500 million to make. I've had way more fun playing several other games that cost far less to develop. Okay, I guess that wasn't concise. I think the user scores are right on the money at 6.5. I'll give it a 7 because it is really pretty.

You will not enjoy this game if you're trying to play it on your own. It's an MMO after all which requires you to be social to discuss strats and generally, have some fun. We've died, screamed and laughed together (new clan and friends met via it) and we still come back for more.

The game really starts after level 20 where the Heroic modifier is activated, the Nightfall strikes are activated along with weeklies, dailies and strike playlists. I have maxed out my vanguard for the week which shows how much of the after 20 content I've played.

There is a lot of hate for this game, especially in metacritic. One review I found was along the lines of "I'd give this game an 8, but because there is a few good reviews, I'll even it out with a 2". In all seriousness, that is a joke.

Very much looking forward to the future with this one, including the Raids which are opened on the 16th. Should be incredible fun.

My recommendation? Don't buy if you're not a social gamer and are not into the 'grind' of typical MMO's. You will not find this fun. If you do get it, please join a clan, make new on-line friends and have a blast.

I give this game a 9 - Purely due down to the story could be a bit deeper and the little grindy end game content (currently).

PvP multiplayer? Unfinished, gloriously imbalanced, been-there-done-that, glitchy.

I should have seen this coming from Activision regardless who actually developed it because otherwise it's hard to imagine Bungie was actually involved.. It's the same boring, repetitive, unintelligent mess that has become (and continues to perpetuate) Call of Duty. No actual thought went into play testing, reflection, or common sense mechanical decision making.

A perfect example of everything fundamentally wrong with this game is the story. Clocking in at around 10 hours, it ends exactly how it starts- no characters, no point, no plot, and so full to the brim of watered down sci fi psychobabble every single loading screen consists of nothing but disjointed terms that mean nothing and sound ridiculous. "A ketch!", "Queen of bleh", "the darkness bluh", "A koris!", "Storm of Struvock", "The tinkle of flub"... I've read better science fiction on the back covers of JA pulp novels at the public library.

Once you finish the entirely anticlimactic story (not that you cared anyway), what else is there?

Well, if you've got a couple of friends and you like playing overly drawn out horde mode missions that you've already completed in the story campaign you might find a couple hours of fun in the "Strike" playlists. The first thing you'll notice is that most of the post game gear you have is now completely useless so look forward to replaying the same hour long boss fights over and over in the hopes you'll randomly get better gear just to play the same missions on a higher difficulty*. You'll do this until you realize you can get more and better drops in 20 minutes of PvP than you could in several hours of PvE.

*Difficulty is completely relative by the way as every single enemy in this game (besides the basic minions) has splash damage based attacks and no amount of armor will stop you from getting killed repeatedly from enemies who don't even need to shoot you. Enemies who's AI doesn't at all improve with difficulty, only their egregiously large heath bars. This all presupposed you have a few friends because good luck meeting new people thanks to the convoluted and painful "fireteam" system.

When you do find that drops are much more plentiful in PvP you can spend hours getting pissed off over horrendously lazy, mind blowingly imbalanced, shoddily designed mechanics in one of a couple modes. You have TDM, Domination, and variants of 3v3 slayer.

TDM is about what you'd expect from CoD- spawn in some random place and run around for a few moments before getting insta-killed by a jumping rocket, a hilariously far-reaching lunge melee attack, or any number of head-scratchingly overpowered "super" attacks.

Domination (called "control" here) can be fun if it wasn't for some of the worst map design in FPS history. No hyperbole- every single map was designed solely with spawn trapping in mind. There will be two points in a somewhat close proximity with direct, safe lanes of view to a third, proportionately farther away point. If you start on the good side and cap both close points, victory is pretty much a given as you can stand behind cover and easily pick off the enemy as they spawn over and over too far away to cap another point. Not that it matters when a single super attack can completely secure (or stop) a point capture with zero effort.

I wont talk about the third mode because ultimately it doesn't matter. The fact is the PvP side of things is at best broken and at worst non-functional. Watch in rage inducting glee as you: get killed by supers through walls, enemies mysteriously take no damage at opportune times, are unable turn your head to look around you (even with your sensitivity on blast), get stuck on map terrain, get match made 2v6, constantly have players quit mid match with no penalty, struggle to navigate map poor design, constantly fight with the most aggressive sticky-aim in gaming history (and still not hit anything), and drop dead before an enemy actually attacks OR kill enemy players only to watch them run around and shoot at you for full seconds before they finally die.

According to Bungie.net I've played Destiny for almost 24 hours stretched across 3 days and I've seen absolutely everything this game has to offer already; every mission, map, mode, and weapon. I've seen at least enough to know that there isn't enough content to keep my interest and no matter how much (or across how many modes) I play "The Crucible" it doesn't get any better.

Solid game-play mechanics makes it a competitive, skill based shooter. Destiny would rank among the greats of all time if it hadn't fell short on some major themes. First, and foremost- communication. It's absolutely ridiculous you cannot voice chat with the Guardians around you. I often feel alone, even when surrounded by others. Second, the story line is sub-par at best. Stereotypical writing, and no major surprises along the way. I'm currently level 20, and I still have no idea what I am, who I am, and why I'm doing what I'm doing. I want to have some emotional reactions to characters, but it just never meets the mark. Third, and my final complaint is the repetitive nature of the mission. Ghost scans something, you fight off hordes. However, these are things that can easily be fixed in future updates, and i look forward to that happening. This is by far the best console game of the next generation. Had Bungie implemented a legit chat system, this game would have been a solid 9.5. However, it's enjoyable as it's stands and I've gotten my 60 dollars worth in the first 3 days alone. Looking forward to future content updates. Expand

Take Borderlands and remove EVERYTHING except the shooting and bad guys!

ZERO Character Interaction, ZERO storyline, Horrible voice acting, and extremely boring boss fights that are more about endurance than skill or strategy.

I'd get my money back if I could. There's a reason absolutely ZERO reviews were allowed before release. Bungie new exactly how **** their game was.

This game was held back due to parity 60 fps has been the standard for shooters since COD 4. 30 fps is almost unplayable and when the next COD comes out this game will be just like Titan Fall a complete ghost town. Parity needs to stop Devs your hurting your product.

Worst multiplayer in any fps I've ever played. Campaign as many have said is bland a boring unless you bring a few friends along for the ride. I suppose it's an okay game if you do so. I must state that I am also not a troll, the game legitimately is not very good. Probably the most overhyped and dissapointing game of the year.

I haven't enjoyed a game this much since Mass Effect (1). ME was the reason I got a 360, Destiny was the reason I got a PS4, and I have to say I am entirely thrilled with my choice and confident that Destiny will provide me more hours of satisifed entertainment than the ME trilogy... which is saying something.

I'm making these recommendations as someone who has finished the story line, broken above the soft level cap, and soaked considerable hours into most hours of Destiny... mostly PVE, with limited PVP, and no Raid yet as it's not yet available, come one level 25!

Here's why, if you're like me, you'll love Destiny:

    1) Great new world: Call it mythic sci-fi, call it space exploration call it a living world, call it whatever you like, bottom line it's an intriguing place to spend time, you're gonna wonder what's around the next corner, you're going to wonder what that spin-metal is for, you're going to want to come back and explore more.

    2) Fun to play: solid mechanics, the weapons feel different, things are balanced, fantastic music, great sound effects, diverse encounters / game types to experience with varying difficulty and/or player number requirements. Bungie marketers talk about something to do, catering to any mood, and from my solid days with the game, I agree!

    3) You actually play with your friends: lots of people dissed the social setup for this game but I dig it. I spend more time catching up with my gamer friends than I have in the years previous. This game is first for me from Raven Shield and Guild Wars 1 in terms of number of hours spent playing with friends. Because it's seamless, because you can jump in and out of activities and join up half way through, because the game play diversity means there's always some old buddies, who've tended to be just names in your PSN list, actually in world doing stuff... And you can join up with them and catch up and that's awesome!

    4) You're character follows you: yep more stuff from the marketing material. I put a bunch of hours into ME3 MP just to unlock the best end game scenario, but having it be an add on, separate character experience made it non-core, aka a chore. Building up your character getting Xp and gear and cash is going to be a little addictive. Your always building up your Guardian no matter your mood.

    5) End Game: there's some crazy challenging undertakings that are going to tempt you into, maxing out Guardian and gear and organizing a group to go take it on. You will get sick of admiring your fancy gear in the companion app and you're going to need to make something of it - either in a Raid or the Iron Banner or Daily or Weekly Challenge and the punishment will keep you coming back for more.

Don't believe the negative reviews - this game is everything I hoped it would be and more... that said... yes I'm looking happily forward to the December expansion.

This game is best enjoyed with a group of friends online, but the "solo" campaign is pretty fun in its own right.

I will say that I wish the levels were better fleshed out with more to explore, and I also don't care for a lack of a rotation on multiplayer maps, but these negatives shouldn't deter from playing this incredibly addicting game.

I had assumed that this games was an MMO (Massive Multiplayer Online), however the lack of user created content proves this to be untrue.

My second major issue is the use of Peter Dinklage as the voice actor of your robotic companion. Not only is this an insult to those who suffer from dwarfism, but it is also an insult to anyone who happens to enjoy the show Game of Thrones, in which Mr. Dinklage plays a major role in as Tyrion Lannister. Are we to believe that Tyrion Lannister's voice is used for a robot in the future? Not to mention that Game of Thrones is not even set on Earth, so how could his voice be there? It does not make sense.

I am deeply disappointed with this game.

Very good game even ignoring all the hype. It's one that's going to evolve and grow over time much like a MMO so its hard to give it a final score. The game wont appeal to everyone, but its far from being as bad as all these low scores suggest. Expect this to be a larger and richer game in the future as the universe expands.

Stupid ammo drops in huge boss fights make it so you not only can't use your favorite weapon, since it only has 3 bullets and holds a max of 15, but then you run out of ammo for your second favorite and theres not a single ammo drop in the whole damn boss fight. In my experience the game is boring, shallow, and repetitive. I wish I had bought the physical copy so I could trade back for some of the money I put in to it.

Repetitive- There is really only one mission over and over. Deploy ghost at a certain point and defend him against waves. Eventually you'll find a boss that is really only a bullet sponge and nothing more. The sword mission was awesome as it was the only break in the monotony.
Boring- The story is short and uninspiring. It has potential but is hardly explored. The voice actors seem to be doing what they can with what they're given. Why not just let Dinklage use his native accent?

I´d really love them, killing other mobs is really fun too, but can be hard sometimes, because of the game designers just made it really pushed together sometimes. The comparison between Watch Dogs and this game is just a joke. Watch Dogs is unstable, but Destiny is extremely polished that it´s almost scary for a game. Destiny may not be big, but think about it - U.P.D.A.T.E.S. That´s what i think, too the level cap is going to be bigger at a time, it´s almost the same with any other game.

Not ony is this the most visually impressive piece of work I've ever seen on a console (it finally feels like the next-gen is here), the gameplay is super smooth and tight. I don't think players realize that the different player classes all control slightly differently and come with different abilities, which makes this type of game incredbily refreshing. I have had no issues with framrate or playing online with my friends. I almost only use the hand cannon, sniper, and melee blade and have been having a blast! How can anyone complain about the boss battles being too long??? They require some intelligence and skill, but yes-they aren't over in a matter of a couple minutes. I think the real problem here, is that the fanboys of games like COD are really not doing so well with this type of game. I have several friends who are twitch fanatics with COD and clean up the maps. When playing them in this game however, I can smoke most of them. I believe that is where many of the lower scores are coming from. Sure there are one or two missions that get a little tedious, but there are more than enough things to do in this game (without the expansions) to keep one busy. And please! It's not like GTA V wasn't a little repititive. I just cannot fathom how this game can score less than a 9 unless those giving it lower scores are either jaded COD fanboys or they are critics that only spent 10 minutes playing it-which usually seems to be the case with uneducated reviewers. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I dont normally write negative reviews because no one whos made up their minds reads them anyway but i felt compelled to do so with Destiny.

On the surface after a few hours gameplay it appears to be groundbreaking and original it dazzles you with a whirlwind adventure backed up by the most polished graphics yet to appear on a console.

Unfortunately this is all an illusion, what Destiny is, is very simple, a combination of tried and tested systems from various games wrapped up polished and put together in a package that stuns and dazes you into believing its something its not.

All that said its not any of those things that lead me to write this review, infact until level 20 i was very happy with the game, its at this point i should mention im a going on 10 year wow veteran and once i reached level 20 i found my situation very very very familiar.

Weekly raids, daily heroics, rep to grind, marks to earn, epics to buy from vendors and a never ending stream of earlier content revamped for a higher level in which to gain said rep and marks.

To go into specifics about what i disliked about it would take longer than the 5000 words im limited to but to list a few, to get beyond level 20 you require gear with +light on it to earn gear with +light on it you have to do level 22 dungeons because only level 18+ rares and legendarys have light on them and level 20 dungeons only reward you with level 17 gear.

The rep grinds are insanely long, after 18 hours of leveling to 20 all the time working for the faction you start as i hadnt gained level 1 rep with them and there are 3 levels required to be able to buy guns from them for which you still have to earn the currency to purchase.

The currency system is flawed and overestimates how patient and committed console gamers are 3 marks per level 22 dungeon with a max of 100 marks per week with every gun costing 150 marks so your looking at 34 runs a week at 40 minutes minimum each just to reach your cap.

Now i have 12 level 90s on wow and i cant stand earning my valor max on half of them each week in all honesty, but from my own personal stand point this is a key flaw in the game.

Some have said the story is poorly written personally i find it entertaining if not amazing it reminds you very much of Halo and doesnt really shake the feeling of being a borderlands + halo hybrid all the way through the game.

What the game does well are things that have been done well before, tried and tested combat from Halo and Borderlands, RPG features familiar to any WoW or Rift player and if you personally have the time to invest 24 ish hours each week earning your marks and getting your gear and have no issues with the daily repeatable quests of WoW or Defiance etc then you'd probably enjoy Destiny for what it is.

A incredibly overhyped fantastically polished grind fest which is a mash up of 3 of the most successful games series of our era.

I think that most the negative reviews is because this game is grossly over hyped. The story line is okay, graphics are fair and play is moderate. It has the same flaw as ALL FPS do. Like all other FPS the story mode is little more than a training tool, Maps repeat and the game is designed for PVP. PVP for FPS games are all the same so people lose interest once the next one games out.I think that most the negative reviews is because this game is grossly over hyped. This game was marketed as an MMORPG/shooter. There really is no RPG side to this. Yes, you can pick different classes, but there is really no difference in the classes. Another issue is that many of the articles about this game state that it could take week to beat the story mode, when in reality it takes a few short hours. There was supposed to be dozens of worlds to visit for the story, but that is not the case.

If you are looking for a "game changer" you are out of luck. The gaming industry has not game out with anything original since the PS1. The last time games were challenging was back in the SNES days.

For me it's very typical of the COD style we've all become antiquated with and while it's a good style, Bungie didn't really try to do anything to set itself apart. The playstyle in Co-op got very repetitive very fast and was generally not very challenging. The 'extra' skills you learn are very generic as well and don't add much to the combat style since you're still just going to be shooting everything and throwing grenades anyways. I'd rather be playing CoD or Battlefield were at least the game play is challenging and ever changing.
I might be biased in giving it a 0, but I rate it lower than I normally would because I feel deceived by the developer and publisher. They sold this game as an MMO that you could explore the universe with and go into massive battles with your buddies against tough enemies, and it's nothing like that. It's just a borderlands clone.
The one redeeming factor I can mention about this game is it is very beautiful. Bungie has been good about making very visually appealing games. Maybe in the future they should just focus on their game engine and market that out to game developers, or get better developers in to work on their own stuff. Really disappointing, but not surprising for Bungie after coming off the heels of Microsoft.

In terms of content the game has plenty. The single player will take about 20 hours to complete, and that is not considering the time spent in other mission types. Compared to other shooters on the market today that is a ton. The story is forgettable, but each mission is well crafted and fun.

The real meat of the game is in playing strike missions. These missions pit you against tough bosses and are challenging and fun. Each take 30-60 minutes and give you great gear for playing. Multiplayer is a lot of fun. There are several different modes, and all the mechanics from the single player carry over to the multiplayer. It makes for a very connected experience between both single and multiplayer.

Anyway, it's a good game. If you enjoy FPS you'll probably enjoy this game as well. I'm going to give it an 8/10 because of the disappointing story and somewhat empty feeling tower, but overall I think the game is quite fun and well worth playing.

It is an example of the craftsmanship at Bungie. One thing I've noticed about a lot of the negative reviews on here is that they come from people that have only scratched the surface of the game, and that is also the case with the critic reviews here on Metacritic. I've invested a LOT of time since launch in this game, probably about 25 hours, got to Level 20, had fun with the strikes, crucible, etc. so I feel I have dug into it enough to judge it.

It isn't a perfect game though. There are some complaints I have, for instance the lack of being able to communicate with people unless you are partied up is off-putting at times, but on the other hand this means not having to put up with annoying people in your team that you were put in at random. The lack of a loadout system is kind of annoying, it would be nice to have a few loadout presets that you can equip with one button. Also the way the menu system works is a bit weak, since the interface screams for a mouse and keyboard but you're stuck with a controller, the UI needs to be more controller friendly (kind of the opposite problem that Skyrim had).

The story is interesting but it doesn't have the sweeping and strong narrative of the Halo games that Bungie has put out, and it does require online access to play, so if you're looking for a solid Single Player shooting experience, you can be better served elsewhere, maybe try out the new Wolfenstein game if you're looking for that, since that was a really awesome single player shooter. That said, I appreciate the story for what it is, and it seems that we will get more as the game progresses, people are reviewing this like this is the finished product and that we will not get any more content, even though we have 2 expansions coming out as well as free content that we will get daily and weekly in the form of heroic and nightfall missions as well as Iron Banner events.

I can understand why Bungie is distancing itself from an MMO title for this game, this MMOs are typically known for stiff and boring gameplay that involves a lot of grinding, since Destiny plays like a non-mmo game, it is as smooth and fast paced as any other major shooter you've played, with a competitive multiplayer that pairs up with the rest. Despite the differences in classes and weapons, I found the online competitive multiplayer to be some of the most balanced I've ever played. The maps are laid out very well and the weapons have a very good counter balance to them, and every class has supers that are implemented well.

I recommend Destiny for those that aren't looking for a cookie cutter shooter mold, but wants a shooter that wants to be a lot of different things. I've been playing on the Playstation 4.

I'll explain. The bosses are tough but they're fair. They're bullet-soaks but that makes sense being you have 3 members in your squad fighting a single guy (albeit there are always other enemies lurking in the tunnels waiting to strike mostly at the most infuriating moments). But that's why it's so much fun!
Another aspect of Destiny that I'm thoroughly enjoying is the weapon and armor, collecting, progressing, and shading. The armor is primo-cool, and the weapons all handle differently, have a weight that you feel through the controller, and have a tactical nature as well (certain weapons fair better in certain circumstances).
The story is actually pretty great too, once you take the time to delve into the lore. Another dark-souls like attribute. Combined with the fantastic musical score and awe-inspiring environments (the backdrops are 'mwah'). There's oft a thunking sound in my room deriving from my jaw audibly hitting the floor.
I created an account just to write a review for this game and bequeath unto it the respect and fandom that it so earnestly and rightfully deserves. I repeat, go and buy this game now, it's worth every Lincoln.

Well, it's an fps rpg. Certain things were expected. Frankly, I love the gameplay of this. I like grinding for levels, gathering loot, and trying to find hidden things. But this is no borderlands. Borderlands is one of my favourite games, and after spending two years playing BL2, I can guarantee this is not the same. Shares some aspects though. And as far as Halo goes, it's really only the aesthetic that is shared. But that's a Bungie thing. Halo is a pretty generic fps within itself to begin with. Most fps games are. If people wanted more "original" games, then you'd actually support games that stray from the norm instead of generic fps games and then companies would start making them. However, that's how the market works. Tldr; The gameplay is great, but not anything all too new. It is enjoyable though.

The lack of chat is actually welcome to me, as I don't really want to converse with other people playing, so the choice of making a fireteam to chat with was a good idea. Not everyone wants to sit there and play with people they don't know, especially since I've got a history of being made fun of on online games for my gender. (Yes, I'm female.) I'd rather just go by myself and if people help me, they help me. Or if people need help, I help them. It's pretty simple.

Graphics wise, it's got it's ups and downs. Some things are absolutely stunning, while some things are like 'meh'. Overall, I'm very happy with how this game looks, and as usual, I love Bungie's designs.

Audio; okay seriously stop making the fallen scream in the background, it's really darn creepy when I'm in a map alone. Like, REALLY creepy.

TLDR; It's a good game, just not anything revolutionary. If you go in without expecting anything over the top amazing, you'll enjoy yourself. For anything though, you shouldn't go in with high expectations. Those who go in with them too high are always disappointed. But I'm enjoying this game and it's a permanent part of my collection.

The idea of exploring vast worlds and interacting with other players throughout a massive universe sounded amazing.

How it sounded, and how it actually is are quite different.

I can't really make the best comment on how Destiny stacks up with other games in the FPS space. As I said, FPS games aren't my top choice. But, I will say that I feel Dust 514 was a better blend of FPS and RPG/MMO elements than what Destiny seems to be in it's current state. If the Dust development team had the Destiny team's budget we may have gotten an amazing game, instead we got one game that was probably too overwhelming and unpolished for the typical FPS gamer. And, another that is all style over substance.

Destiny was supposed to have vast open worlds...it doesn't. I've died multiple times by jumping over a ridge I'm not allowed to jump over, not exactly open world, at least have the area surrounded by toxic gas or some crap so I know how limited my boundaries actually are. You can see these vast beautiful areas, but you're not allowed to venture into them. As I said, the worlds are beautiful and I loved exploring through the tunnels on the moon, etc., but that doesn't make a game great, IMO. And, it's certainly a game that overpromises in the open-world department.

Overall I would rate the game as such:

FPS - 8/10? I'm not an expert here, it might be a great FPS, I just don't really know. I enjoy the FPS in Destiny more than I have in most other FPS games I've played.

RPG - 5/10 It's cool to check out these planets, the story is ok if not spectacular. The real problem I have here is the utter lack of character customization and town type locations. There are three categories and very little ability to customize those categories. Experience gains lead to a very set path of upgrades with little to no customization except from gear. If you're a hunter (as I have played) then you get the exact same upgrades as every other hunter, for the most part. The fact that there is only ONE city in the game with vendors etc. is also very limiting from an RPG perspective. There can't be human outposts in other parts of the world? Small bands of brave souls couldn't have figured out a way to hole up and protect themselves in a rough frontier life? The decision to make the world home to one human city seems to be a bit of a cop out to me, even the one city has almost no real method of interacting with characters or NPC's. In a two-hour type gaming session I might spend three minutes in town. That's just stupid. In fact calling this game an RPG at all is somewhat of a joke.

MMO - 1/10 There is no interaction with your fellow players. No real guilds to join or allegiances to forge. The fact that other people are running around the maps is almost coincidental. Your interaction with them is no greater than with NPC's on traditional RPG's. It astounds me that gaming magazines and review sites consider to apply the term MMO to this game.

The game itself is very pretty and the worlds seem nicely made, but they also somehow manage to feel empty. Most missions can be completed by simply hopping on your Pike (looks like a Star Wars speeder bike) and just boosting to the objectives. The objectives themselves are mundane and monotonous. Almost every mission so far has been: Start at the hub, go to x location, let the ghost scan said objective, defend him, kill a rare mob or mini boss, repeat. The missions seem pretty short so far, with the average time being 15-20 minutes per mission.

I have done two different Raids with a couple of friends, and each one felt pretty much like a story mission, only slightly longer being around the thirty minute mark. The main reason they seem to last longer is that the bosses are damage sponges. They have several nuke type attacks that can insta-kill you so you are forced to pop in and out of cover to take your shots. While the boss fight is going on, packs of smaller mobs seem to come out at intervals. The only reason I can think they needed to do this was to give you ammo drops for the damage soaking ability of the main boss.

The Crucible, or the Player vs Player matchmaking, is overall pretty fun but there are quite a few setbacks as well. For one, the classes Super Charged attacks are essentially one hit kills against players. To me, this makes the game a lot less competitive and punishes you for just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. There are no counters to these for the most part. Sniper rifles are very strong since the game has a strong auto aim feel to it. Getting headshots isn't exactly hard to do. Auto Rifles seem to be the go to weapon and shotguns for a secondary seem like the standard setup. The maps are pretty large and well designed. If you have played Halo, you know what to expect here.

In conclusion, the game is fun, but also very average at best. For the budget that was spent on this game, it screams underwhelming. Out of 10, I would give it a 6.

Not only that, but it is also being reviewed relative to how it resembles other games such as Halo and Borderlands when it is clear that it is it's own game. The game is not an MMO, the hype made it seem that way through false interperetations, and Bungie never labeled this game as an MMO, just that it would take some aspects from them. This game takes it's own stab at a new type of game that takes aspects from some of the best games out there, but still manages to do its own thing. It has at least seven hours of campaign, not including strikes, but the gameplay is fluid and rewarding, and it makes you want to play for hours continuously. The game is the perfect mix of a first person shooter that integrates the single player and multiplayer almost perfectly to my liking. The game is immense although not described as that, and the customization is unique and fun to work with. The multiplayer is also one of the coolest I've played in a while, and while most people are (like IGN), it can't be rated on whether it is competitive enough. The gameplay is by almost no means repetitive until after 20 hours, having four different worlds and a good library of multiplayer maps. Granted, the game does have flaws even though they don't take away from the game and the experience Bungie wanted you to have. The story is slow, the gameplay and mood are superb, the multiplayer is fun and diverse, the sound is enjoyable and the graphics are stunning. While the game is big, it is not as big as some would expect but neither are a lot of other very important games. If the hype didn't reach such a high point, this game would score a 9 on any website period. Expand

Here is the thing about Destiny; its like a Strawberry Daquiri. Sure you have people that love fruit and don't drink, and then you have people that drink but don't like fruity cocktails. But there are a whole bunch of people who like their booze blended with fruit and served with a little umbrella. Hell, sometimes the people who only like booze or only like fruit try a Strawberry DaquiriHere is the thing about Destiny; its like a Strawberry Daquiri. Sure you have people that love fruit and don't drink, and then you have people that drink but don't like fruity cocktails. But there are a whole bunch of people who like their booze blended with fruit and served with a little umbrella. Hell, sometimes the people who only like booze or only like fruit try a Strawberry Daquiri and realize they've been missing out this whole time.

To that end, much like Strawberry Daquiris, if you have enough of Destiny, you are going to have a great time (even if you don't remember all of it).

I will readily admit that Destiny has repetitive aspects to it but what FPS or MMO doesn't? Now a crowd of people who viewed 'Destiny' as a 'gamechanger' are probably stamping their feet and howling at the cracked moon about it not being radical enough. Destiny is not a gamechanger but, what it is, is a gatekeeper to a new land of games. I have never seen a game that has blended so many elements from so many different genres/games to create something all its own.

Now at this point we should be getting the digs about copying Borderlands or copying Mass Effect or yaddya yaddya yaddya rabble rabble rabble. Well you guys must hate cars (BMWs are just Model T clones ftw) because every game borrows elements from others to create their own. What Destiny does is take some of the best elements from those other games and mashes them together in a wonderfully diverse package. Many will point to the loot diversity and say Borderlands, others look at the MP and say Halo, some point to the RPG elements and say Mass Effect and yes, its fun to point at origins and go 'Simpsons did it!' but the bottom line is those other games don't have all the elements together and that is what makes Destiny such a strong offering.

Listen, in the end, Destiny will create its own fanbase much like Borderlands did, much like Mass Effect did. It may not be as broad or as far reaching as Halo or COD or BF because if they wanted it to be that far reaching they would've just made a shooter. What Bungie did, while not a revolution, was raise the bar for the level of depth and content that we should expect from FPS games moving forward.

In the end, I know some people thought with Destiny they were getting a spaceship but got a Tesla instead. No, its not that revolutionary, its not a totally new experience or idea but its something we've never seen available for mass consumption with such an interesting mix of ideas and gameplay. So if you want to take it back to the dealership, go for it, but don't begrudge the look on the next guys face as he can't wait to get in and try something different.

Although Destiny isn't the brilliant start to a franchise that many had hoped for, it's a great game for those who can push through its flaws and enjoy the ride.

What is most amazing of all is that despite its litany of weird little problems, Destiny is fantastic, its combat up there with the very best, the thrilling rhythm of its battles still not fading the 30th time through, and it has no single systemic problem that is not fixable. [Dec 2014, p.106]

Destiny is a flawed but still extremely fun first person shooter. While the Destiny universe itself seems intriguing, the storyline is told in such an incoherent manner that it's hard not to be turned off by all the technobabble. Fortunately the co-op shooter mechanics are absolutely perfect. The loot system can be maddening, but in a way it adds to the game's addictiveness. [Oct 2014]
