Do not buy it if game play is important to you, because in this case it is just not fun. Have in mind that THIS GAME IS NO METAL GEAR SOLID V. Buy it if you're into narrative with good graphics. That's it.

Going through the game and trying to finish it was one of the most boring and sometimes frustrating things I ever done. I strongly believe that someone should’ve stood up to Hideo Kojima and told him the truth.

The music was great, I loved all the songs. The graphs were astonishing but rapidly contrasted with a messy menu where a lot of things were put together causing the user to get lost and wondering what to do, they tried to alíviate that by adding long descriptions to the settings and features, which made it worst.

Every time you finished a quest there was a long sequence of boring videos that made me nodded off more than a few times.

Anyway, I praise that Kojima dared to try to do something different instead of sticking to the convencional and I hope others creators dare to do the same.

Nerveless, as in the meaning of “trial and error” where you try and face the possibility of error, this was a failure.

There are many things in gaming that have given me trouble over the years. Grinding towards a seemingly unattainable item, getting inexplicably lost, or trying to beat a boss on the hardest difficulty before inevitably realizing that I suck and have to go back to casual.

One thing that has never been on that list until Death Stranding: Walking. Few things make you appreciate the art of staying upright like falling over for the 20th time and watching your cargo break and scatter.

From the beginning, the game starts off slowly and painfully. You don’t know what’s going on, you can barely navigate the map without tumbling down a hillside, and there are ghost-like “BTs” roaming the map which you are defenseless against, and they’re ready to f**k your day up and ruin some poor SOBs pizza delivery.

A few hours in though, the game finally starts to turn a corner. Things that were once dreadfully tedious and painful suddenly become easier as you slowly acquire new gear to help you along your way. And just when you think you’ve gotten all the gear you could possibly get, a new item shows up at the exact moment when you were getting fed up with something. And then that happens 10 more times. Each time adding layer upon layer to the experience, slowly building what felt like an empty experience and gameplay into a deep, rich, nuanced journey.

And throughout this journey, the narrative of Sam the Delivery Man and the “Death Stranding” world he inhabits envelopes you and draws you into its many, many layers of mystery. Although there are perhaps a few holes, the overall narrative of Death Stranding is incredibly deep and complex. It’s a story that keeps on giving. And giving. And giving. So much so that when I thought I was close to the end of the game, it turns out there were still 10 hours left to go.

The ending did feel a little bit drawn out (almost two hours of cut scenes!!!!). It might have been nice for some parts of the plot to wrap up earlier as the story progressed. But there was understandably a lot of narrative to unpack.

Other than that, the fighting and gunplay left a little bit to be desired, but this wasn’t the focus of the game and there are so so many other FPS titles you could play if that’s what you’re looking for.

Death Stranding is shallow and empty (by design), until it isn’t. In the end, the overwhelming amount of satisfaction you will feel as you finally start to conquer the empty, cruel world that you inhabit is worth the effort. Oh yeah and then there’s that test tube baby strapped to your chest the whole time.

I have to say the more balanced reviews are correct, this is a very interesting game but it absolutely is not for everyone, it's very difficult to describe to be honest, the basic gameplay is indeed take this from a to b, and repeat but it's just so much more than that. The on the fly planning, route making, stealth, combat, asset management all make it so much more than just a postman simulator.

I've got to say it is a slow burner of a game, almost an open world puzzle if you like. I suspect if your interests are more in the twitch shooter or sport sim direction this game would be hell on earth, and that is in no way a dig at the guys that play those genre, it's a talent I don't have.

It's possibly the most beautiful thing I've ever seen on the PS4, the controls are tight (the vehicles aside) and it's music is excellent.

I'd recommend picking it up, but if you ain't sure just wait it out and pick it up cheap in a years time. It's worth a look at least surely?

This game premise is at the very best light EXPERIMENTAL maybe suited for some indie ten dollar game, but utterly ridiculous in a full priced AAA game.

The "not for everyone" label that every favorable review has given only is but an euphemism for it not being an AAA. Butit did had the AAA budget, that's whythe graphics are so good (and because of the graphics I've given it a score of 1)

The game only lives on hype.

    KOJIMA: Hold my beer.

Some people say that it's stupid, because it's about inventory management and not action. And that's why I liked it so much. It's "oldschool", where you have to think a bit about what you are going against in this particular mission, instead of just rushing in. I guess oldschool gamers will appreciate it more than the younger gamers.

    The game has it's flaws:
    - boss fights are not that challenging
    - the edge is taken off a bit when you are equipped with weapons
    - the game is linear and doesn't that much encourage you to do side quests, as they seem unworthy, for the most part

    But it has it's pro's:
    - visuals
    - cast
    - story (for the most part)
    - music (!)
    - the mechanics
    - being a completely different thing

Death Stranding shines as something different, althrough very much Kojim-ish to it's core. It's a welcome breath of fresh air blown straight into Konami's face.

Instead of buying a 10th FIFA or 20th COD - buy Death Stranding. If you won't like, at least you will experience something else. And that's always worth your $ and time.

This is probably the most disappointed I've been with a game in years. Like many others, after the cancellation of Silent Hills, I was looking forward to seeing what Kojima would do next. What we got is something that would have been better off as a movie instead of a video game; Death Stranding is proof that Kojima is a wannabe movie director in a game designer's body.

What we got is something that would have been better off as a movie instead of a video game; Death Stranding is proof that Kojima is a wannabe movie director in a game designer's body.

The most egregious flaw of DS is the gameplay, and its lack of variety. This is not meant to be an action-packed game, so to justify the utter lack of interesting things happening during your deliveries, Kojima saw fit to "gameify" otherwise mundane elements taken for granted in other games. Now, you must make sure Sam is balanced with rudimentary, occasional inputs and ensure what you're carring isn't too heavy so that you don't fall forward up a steep slope and lose all your packages. Essentially, your means of traversal is the gameplay loop. There is shooting, such as during encounters with MULEs (vagabonds addicted to delivering, for some reason) but these moments are few and far between. DS props up this lack interesting interactivity with additions from other players appearing in your world; for instance, a ladder you set across a river may appear in another player's game, and vice versa. It's a good concept, but not enough of one to distract from the boredom of Death Stranding's frankly samey-looking open world.

The game's highlights are its BT encounters and MULE encounters, as this is when the stakes are raised forthe durability of your packages. The former is dealt with through certain ranged items fairly easily later in the game, and MULEs can be taken out through stealth, hand to hand combat (which is nothing more than mashing the attack button) or gunning them down. These moments make DS actually feel like a game. They aren't free from criticism either, however. MULEs are supposed to be obsessed with delivering, but you don't ever see them actually trying to deliver anything. I fully expected to see MULEs out in the world, perhaps dying in front of me or already dead, necessitating the player to incinerate their bodies so that a voidout might be prevented, but this never happened. And that's the main issue with DS: not much happens where and when it should.

As a game, an interactive medium, one would expect the story to unfold through moments of gameplay. Not with DS, the main story beats, character interactions, and narrative progression almost always happen during non-interactive cutscenes. This gives the game a feeling of just putting up with the chore of the main gameplay to watch the interesting story unfold in the game's inner movie. And to DS' credit, the story can be intetesting and it does have some decent characters. But as a game, DS fails. Later in the game, travel is made more convenient through trucks, ziplines, etc. However, this speaks to me as major evidence that the main thing you do in the game, walking, is boring enough that the game eventually rewards you by skipping it.

Perhaps basing a game around player interconnection is a great idea, as shown with Demon's Souls. Death Stranding, unfortunately, is not the showcase for this idea as it lacks in the very thing it should be: a video game. And I think Kojima couldn't be happier about this, as he edges closer and closer to the world of non-interactivity in Hollywood. If you want to play a good open world game from this year with variety to its core gameplay loop, and an interesting story with good characters, play Days Gone instead.

This is a game that is not for everybody, but it's a AAA game that goes where games like Shadow of the Colossus or Journey went before. Providing you with a solitude experience of contemplation and amazement. And no, it's not just a walking simulator. It gives you so many tools as your go through the game, you can create roads, ride bikes, travel through zip lines that you can place wherever you want and everything you do is at the same time connected with other people who left ladders or ropes for you in the way. It feels like a world connected even when you are by yourself as the game plays a lovely song from "Low Roar".

This is the game for people who like hiking, sci-fi, and horror. Yes, you fight monsters, but while that is part of the game with a lot of spectacle, you will be wishing to be spending your time o delivering packages rather than fighting. Why? Because the weight system feels great, your decision making on what to take with you, will you take the difficult path or the longer route using a truck? How many deliveries can you take with you? Your decision and how you travel is up to you, and that sense of freedom and exploration is something few games can provide you.

And the vistas....oh y god, the vistas. Well if Horizon Zero Dawn was like an Avatar beautiful World, and RDR2 was like a realistic beautiful look at our old western with beautiful landscapes. DS is like going to Marks, Venus, and every planet you think about it. I know it's supposed to be the earth after the Death Stranding event, but still. It loks bautiful and otherworldly.

All that said this is not a game for those who want everything from the start. If you don't have patience I can see yourself getting bored. But if you're up to the challenge, just like hiking, when you get to the summit (8+ hours into the game) you'll start to get why this game is special.

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
