This game is pure aesthetic. Every aspect of its design feels like artwork, and the story is beyond anything I have experienced in other games. The gameplay is fun, challenging, and intuitive.

Game play is is really good in this game, traversal is fun due to its having indepth mechanics in depth. Minus fragile, the story and characters are well written, and very impact especially the world bullring with its own science. Plus the online elements of how people help each other is innovative

Definitely not for people who thinks FIFA, COD or BF series like games are the best (not like they are bad, but you know what I mean).

For all the other people- you must play this. If you are in to things like Blade Runner movies or deep indy, european movies... This game will be better than that :) And I mean it. Oh, man(and ladies) it was that good.

To be fair, there was moments in the game where it required some patience. And I see why people would call it Fedex simulator, but that was just a part of mind blowingly amassing journey.

This game is an unforgettable experience, sadly, not for all the peoples to be revealed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is really a masterpiece by Kojima. It might seem boring and repetitive at first, but once you get to build more stuff, it is just too addictive and fun. I had the most fun building dozens of ziplines all over the place to be able to deliver packages really really fast. As Kojima gives player a lot of freedom in DS, there are really a lot of different ways to play & enjoy the game. Expand

This was a breath of fresh air, the story was fascinating and engaging, characters well realised and game play varied and rewarding. The story kept me in it, BTs, the ghost like entities that pervade the world, are a good kind of scary and I really enjoyed encounters with them. The boss battles were unreal, and oh so satisfying and the acting and story was just so great, also your little BB (baby you carry around in a pod), is probably the greatest video game character ever created, I was so invested in his safety right from the first moment I got him! The game has to be played to be fully appreciated, and this is from someone who really dislikes open world games! I don't know how anyone couldn't love this masterpiece, and that's what it is, a masterpiece. sand the relentless push towards games where the key mechanic is combat, has never really been my thing. Without Konami's editing, one can feel and appreciate Hideo Kojima's creative forces behind the Metal Gear games. Hideo Kojima likes making games with smart, gritty, story-driven missions with militaristic undertones that have protagonists fully equipped with the latest tech to get the job done. All of this manifests in Death Stranding reasonably well, with some caviats. Fantasy job-simulator games have a somewhat niche market. The experience is there, but the amount of enjoyment one gets out of the game depends on how much they like the job description. Basically, in Death Stranding, you play as a package deliverer in a post-apocalyptic world. While the job is meaningful and vital for the survival of other settlements in the world, the dangers and beauty of the world don't always make up for the tedium that being a long-haul delivery man occasionally brings with it. The experience of this game is essentially the experience of an interesting job that would never exist in our world today, what with transport vehicle technology, decent infrastructure, and the lack of an appocolypse making the concept of this game protagonists' job that much more unnecessary in a developed country. The experience of virtual hiking, on the other hand, is spirit-lifting. Long treks across vast, Iceland-like landscapes make this worthwhile for those with the patience and contentment to appreciate it. Expand

The game starts of quite confusingly but as you go you will find out a lot about the world and characters which I love, it's a slow build and definitely not for everyone but by the end if you can bare with it's gameplay for 40 hours you will feel satisfied (well I did anyway). The graphics as well, I felt mesmerized, I felt like I was watching a movie during the cinematics, these are definitely the best graphics to this day , it should also be experienced in 4K. The acting as well from all the actors are phenomenal especially from Tommie Earl Jenkins towards the end of the game I definitely felt emotions running through me when it got to these sort of moments.

Now to the negatives and these ones hurt the game and the biggest one is the gameplay aspect of the game. It gets boring very quick, for the first few hours I actually didn't mind doing it and the music felt quite relaxing but I found myself playing this game for a few hours a day then stopping because I was getting bored pretty quick, I would of rather this game be a movie game like until dawn then having these boring gameplay aspects of delivering packages from one side of America to the other side and return. The other negative is that the boss fights of the game are quite bad, some of the bosses don't even attack you, sure the Higgs and Cliff fights are amazing but the BT bosses are quite bad and boring .

The most divisive game of 2019 is a good game in my opinion just because I was so invested in the story and characters but the gameplay brings this game down quite a bit and found myself wanting this to be a TV show, Movie or movie game. I wished Kojima worked on a horror game or something like PT because the horror elements here are really good and suspenseful. Do i recommend it though? No but if you have the patience then give it a try!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The story is very interesting and unique with a deep meaning, and it may have a little problem with the pacing, but it didn't bother me that much, what bothered me were the **** holograms. When you make a delivery you get a hologram of a person that thanks you for the delivery and maybe get a reward. As you progress it starts to get repetative and boring. The other think that bothers me a bit is near the end when something happens and then you go to a place, which you can't escape, and you cannot do anything except walk for aroung 5 minutes, get tired, sit, listen a long explanation, get up and repeat that two more times. But with this out of the way i think that the gameplay is very unique and relaxing. I never felt bored walking and making deliveries. The end is beautiful and very emotional. That was my poorly structured opinion on the game. Expand

Definitely not Kojima's best work. Not a horrible game at all but very repetitive, grindy, and mind numbing to play. There's only so many times you can tolerate doing the same things over and over, watching the same cutscenes over and over, and getting the same generic rewards over and over before getting annoyed and bored.

There's only so many times you can tolerate doing the same things over and over, watching the same cutscenes over and over, and getting the same generic rewards over and over before getting annoyed and bored.

How does it hold up to some of Kojima's other work? Well it's certainly no MGS or Snatcher.
The graphics are very impressive, possibly Yoji Shinkawa's best work, the aesthetics and designs are very creative, and likewise the world design is about as good as it gets for the current gen, pure eye candy. The sound design is also pretty good, I enjoyed more than a few of the licensed songs, and I can't complain about the sound effects and ambience. The voice acting is pretty exceptional aside from Norman Reedus being mostly absent and just listening to NPCs without any response most of the time, much like Kiefer Sutherland did as Big Boss/Venom Snake in MGS V.

The story is just weird, some parts of it are neat but more silly than anything, some of the cut scenes are exceptional , very nicely shot, and directed and that just might be the carrot on the stick to get you through the often drawn out, repetitive chapters but the story itself is just extremely tongue and cheek and I found myself rolling my eyes at the plot and world building Kojima is known for.

Gameplay is interesting, the locomotion itself is a challenge, it can be fun at times even with the frustration of taking one wrong step and falling flat on your face ruining your cargo early on, I still had a bit of fun traversing the world and having to get creative to make short cuts and working with/helping out the other invisible players to make the landscape more convenient to navigate.

I would have loved to see more importance in combat and I understand that Kojima is not a huge fan of killing and ultra violence, but the combat feels very dated for a game released in 2019, especially compared to how good and deep the combat and controls felt in 2015's MGS V.

I'd say its worth buying, just wait for a sale. I got my copy at 40 USD and still I overpaid a bit because of how the game just drags on and leaves much to be desired. Maybe 30 dollars would be a better price-tag. The Metal Gear saga has been my favorite franchise in gaming, really hate saying I am disappointed with Death Stranding but yeah.. It could have been better for sure.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. THE GOOD

    -Gameplay
The game actually isn't 100% nothing but fetch quests, but it is "mostly" fetch quests. If this were any other game that would be a very bad thing, but the way that the game is designed makes fetch quests very fun and they are absolutely the best part of the game. Progression feels great, everything feels earned, and nothing is free.

Want to run around with a pair of cyber legs to help you carry more, and to help you with stability? Ok, but now you can't attach packages to your thighs, and now you need to manage the battery for it (meaning you either take advantage of the infrastructure that you've access too via linking with other players, or you build charging stations yourself). Wanna use that nice big truck you finally managed to develop that holds tons of cargo and protects cargo from timefall? You better bet you're gonna a spend time building roads and linking up with players that have the same goals in mind.

-The design of the supernatural elements
Timefall is a very cool and unique hazard and the story and world designers really knocked it out of the park trying to think of how timefall would affect the world. There's subtle details that you'll notice as you play that will make you go "Ahhhhh... okay..." and it's nice that a lot of these details are "just there" and not spelled out for you.

The "ghost" like creatures are genuinely creepy and until you realize how not threatening they are and how easy it is to get around them, they'll be genuinely frightening

    What I don't like:

-America is SMALL! Like seriously... it's smaller than a small city... It's very immersion breaking... It's a little sad as they "could" have used the existing lore to make it seem life sized. They've got a system in place for feeding "Chiral Printers", basically a 3D printer on steroids, to build roads and highways... It would have felt much better to have the player building these highways to connect large maps together, the player only being able to cross between maps with certain vehicles. Instead, it literally takes 10-20 minutes to drive from Maine to Florida...

    -The Story
I like the themes. I like the "feel" that Kojima was going for. I like the subject matter. I like the acting, the presentation, and on paper I like most of the plot points. My problem with the story is how exposition heavy it is.

There are several characters who exist solely to exposition dump on Sam and they do it soooo frequently... It's rather mind numbing...

-The sections of gameplay that aren't fetch quests
Minor spoilers here, there are sections of gameplay that end up basically being a 3rd person shooter. It's a jarring change of pace and it feels completely out of place.

I LOVE the design of the creatures, as mentioned above, but the actual "gameplay" that revolves around them is really really weak. Early on you're encouraged to sneak around them, which is tense as the Timefall damages your cargo so you "want" to go fast. Well... you can literally stash your cargo, run straight into one of the baddies so they "get" you, and once they "get" you there's this transition that basically forces Sam to start running for his life... but actually "doing" that is so incredibly easy. You can lpick a direction and spam jump+run in most cases to get away. You won't die. Once you get away the rainfall clears and you're free to grab your cargo and cross through the area unhindered. What's more, you develop technology as the game progresses that lets you take them out with minimal effort.

-Random details that don't make sense
No, I don't mean story wise. I'm talking about things like... how Sam's jacket leaves his face exposed even with his hood up. Sam's gonna get a lot of Timefall slapping his face. If Kojima wanted his face to be exposed so we could see Norman Reedus acting, he could have just had him behind clear plastic...

It's utterly unbelievable that humanity would survive with the death rules as they are. Early game spoilers, when ANYBODY dies they go nuclear if they aren't burned within a few hours. There are cities in the game with populations that are supposed to be 5 digits... Now, this "could" have been fixed with some writing... Suppose everyone that lives in these cities are forced to basically wear self incinerators that'll cook em when their heart stops. The bandits outside the cities could not have these, so you still wouldn't want to kill them. Why would the terrorists even use nukes??? Just f-ing off someone in a city and hide the body then leave...

    -Transitional cutscenes
This is a minor gripe. You can manually skip transitional cutscenes, but there are so many of them. Seriously, when Sam goes into a safehouse there are THREE cutscenes.

    Overall:

-In spite of it's flaws, the core gameplay loop is very fun and the game is very unique. Recommend to anyone that's not just an FPS junkie. 8/10
    For me, it's a solid 8/10.

Storytelling, dialogues and visual impact are amazing.
Only downside are boss fights, way to basic with regard to the gameplay.

It's got a ton of routine work, it's largely repetitive without a satisfactory return on that work. As you can see, DS is being negatively review bombed with a couple thousand ppl out of millions that likely never bought the game not only downvoting positive reviews while upvoting negative ones the second they pop up but also flooding the game with spammed "0"s. Y are ppl so upset?

You have many pissed off audiences when it comes to Kojima.

    1) the audience that expected anything with his name on it to be nothing more than a murder sim with fan service a la Metal Gear.

    2) PS4 players salty their precious game cannot be used as a topic of discussion in terms of exclusives to help with their "console war" narrative.

    3) pissed off ppl on PC that are getting the game at least 7 months late but really shouldn't complain cause they're actually getting the game anyways

    4) pissed off Xbox and Switch players because Hideo "abandoned" them on Xbox and hasn't given a crap about Nintendo's consoles since the GC (also pushing their "console war" b.s)

    5) Understandably upset Metal Gear fans that not only wanted but EXPECTED a spiritual successor to MGS that not only Konami doesn't want him working on but Hideo himself hasn't wanted to touch since the early 2000's

    6) Silent Hill fans that assumed Hideo Kojima + Guillermo Del Toro + Norman Reedus = spiritual successor to the Silent Hills game that never existed

    7) The casual idiots that are too lazy to do research in any way, shape or form like the internet doesn't exist and the only way to know of a game's release is through a flyer, a cable tv commercial or just walking into the store and staring at video game covers until you see something that peaks their interest. Conveniently enough, the internet existed for them to write a bad review.

    8) The people that hate Hideo Kojima because he's one of the most celebrated video game directors with a solid reputation. They hate him as a person and mistake "confidence" with "overly inflated ego" and I don't blame em. When there's barely any1 else to celebrate about and the state that gaming has been this gen, it makes sense to hate on the few crowds that are still happy. It's also very popular and memeworthy to hate things as a collective. Look what happened on this site with Astral Chain. Incredible game but MetaCritic had to fix the review bombing because it got so bad for some of the same reasons I listed above. I expect it to happen here as well. It also shows why reviews on both sides of the spectrum (the critic and the consumer) is a flawed system. People are tarnishing (and boosting) this (and other) game's reputation without even having any proof of buying or playing it. Not a good look for what's supposed to be the "end all, be all" for judging a game, especially this kind of game.

    9) People that played the game for under 10 hours and gave up because they don't have patience and don't know that every Hideo Kojima game comes with build-up and a progression system integrated in the best way possible. Chapter 1 and 2 were basically glorified tutorials with lots of cinematics. If you don't even have the patience to get past that, I don't see why you bought this game in the first place.

    10) The few of the already small bunch: People who played the game, gave it the shot it deserved, completed it and genuinely did not like it whether it be for the reasons listed above, because it's not what they wanted or it was exactly what they expected and they just felt that it was executed poorly.

Now you have people on the positive review side not only rating the game perfectly because they enjoyed it but also because they're fanboys of Kojima and/or they feel the need to defend against this large wave of negative review bombings. Or both.

Technically, you're both wrong. All you're doing is showing why a site and system like Metacritic isn't credible. This stupid score means nothing in the long run when the credentials needed to affect it is as little as "you need an email address". You people are toxic.

    Let's talk about the game.

I loved it and while I don't think it's perfect, it's still a masterpiece in it's own right. This game was never gonna be for everybody. I didn't come here to kill everyone nor did I come here to deliver packages (although I can do both). I came here knowing that this was a Hideo Kojima game ready to do whatever task he has me doing this year. The music, cinematography, graphics and all that speak for itself. Incredible. Let's talk about the gameplay.

If this game's a wAlKiNg SiMuLaToR, GTA V is a sports game and Final Fantasy VII is a VR adventure. It makes no sense. Checked my stats and I've done more driving than walking. Yes, traversal and inventory management is one of the main focuses of this game but once you progress enough, it basically turns into MGS-lite with a heavy focus on weight + balance. With enough practice & progressing, you can become a damn super soldier.

Try for yourself. Don't trust me or us. I had lots of fun. You may or may not.

Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
