Nice idea. Nice story. Very good cast with very good acting most of the time. Amazing music. The world feels natural but there is is not enough variation. The too many explanatory cut-scenes in the beginning of the game were somewhat tiring. The world felt too empty but I guess this goes hand in hand with the narrative.

I came into this having only watched the original trailer when it came out. All I heard when the game was released were the complains about it being "boring" and "divisive" but when I eventually started it, I simply was sucked into a beautifully terrifying world.

I resist giving anything full marks. But it's been two days since I was dumbfounded and in awe as I finished it at 5.30 in the morning and I still cannot stop thinking about it. The fact that I didn't even realize that I logged in 87 hours before completing is a testament to how engrossing it was to me.

If you're looking for a unique gaming experience with a cinematic and existential twist to it, this is for you.

You can play this game in a whole bunch of ways, i mostly went stealth, think really the most enjoyable parts are when you can take a minute to enjoy your surroundings, or when it forces you to find a way of interacting with human adversaries.

its a slow burn and not very varied in the main mission structures. But that's not the point. you are there to make other players times easier, you need to go through the slow opening to get to the point to work with others asymetrically, helping others is very satisfying. seeing the roads you built being used by other users, creating zip lines across mountains etc

its not for everyone, but i definitely enjoyed it especially during lockdown

I really don't know what to say about this game? For starters it is very boring with long cut scenes that make this more of a video game movie than an interactive and fun video game.

Do yourself a favor and just watch a game-play walk through on youtube if you want to fall asleep at night.

Some people will say that the game created a new genre in science fiction and gaming, and they might be right. This does not mean therefore the gameplay mechanics are good/satisfying, that the story is coherent/wel written. This is my review after trying to play the game for about 15 hours but eventually giving up.
    First the good:
++amazing cast of actors, that have been skillfully scanned and animated
++amazing graphics, the interface and world are very pretty
++music is great and fits the whole atmosphere of death and taking journeys
++first (and hopefully not last) game by an independent game studio started by Kojima!

    Now the bad:
--- writing: the writing in the game is horrid, props to the actors for greatly performing poorly (and most times corny) written lines. For a game that has a lot of story it would have been a good idea to let a professional English (native or equally skilled) writer take a look at all the writing. Not to mention the contant pedantic in your face lines that feel awkward and stupid. "There is no future without america". We all know Kojima is a fan of the USA culture, but the game feels forced in the way it speaks about it.
--- gameplay/game mechanics: yes it is a different kind of game and I'm all for new and innovative, but, gameplay wise it feels very artificially filled with unnecessary back and forth, almost unsteerable vehicles, walking mechanics that dont make sense (reedus radomly zways left or right) preventing users from enjoying the walking around. This couldve been removed and the game would not suffer from it. Adding complexity in order to give players something to do while walking is not good game design.
---Story and world logic: any good story makes sense in its own world. The whole rain makes you old is cool and innovative but, the world does not make sense when you think about it for more than 2 seconds, the plants grow and die, rocks should decay and most infuriatingly there shouldn't be any buildings standing! How many times has it rained when you reach a brand new outpost? If those building are made of a certain material that does not decay, why not use that material on everything else? Also what happened to planes? They should be able to rise above the rain and deliver goods and everything else? Why not burn people at cities and collect the chiral dust in a container that can be later shipped off site? There are many such gigantic logic holes in the story that I tried to ignore but it was in the end impossible to. Reedus is the last resort of sorts for the unification of USA, so why not put everything into helping him out? There are literary trucks outside that reedus is not allowed to drive, why?
--UX: yes the UI is pretty, but its incredibly unclear and does not communicate clearly to the player what is happening, specially the deliver menus and world icons.
-- Player feedback: the game likes to make the player feel like an important part of the world, however the lines are overused and you cant take it seriously after the 25th time someone gives their thanks.

TLDR: game is pretty, game mechanics are awkward and often make the game unnecessarily difficult and grindy. World/Story logic often doesn't make sense.

After the famous split between Kojima and Konami, one of these projects Death Stranding had been teased for quite a long while. Now it's finally out, the reviews have been streaming in and so far it's got mixed opinions for a variety of reasons. The first thing that might put people off is that at it's heart, it isn't an action game (or at least, it isn't at first). It does appear to share and engine and some control mechanics from the MGSV games but other than that, this is entirely it's own property and focuses more in terms of Sci-Fi and Horror than other genres.

You play as Sam Porter Bridges, motion captured and voiced by Norman Reedus (an actor most famous for The Walking Dead and Blade 2)
Sam is essentially a courier tasked with travelling the strange and inhospitable landscape caused by a post-apocalyptic event where society is reduced to living mostly in bunkers with very little resources. Key aspects of the game include balancing your cargo load, carrying collapsible ladders and climbing anchors to make yours (and other players') journeys easier. You have to maintain your walking boots, keep your chest-mounted BB unit happy and look after your health and stamina. Crouching makes you slower and makes carrying heavy loads easier. Walking and running will shift the cargo weight onto one side, forcing you to move more slowly or stabilise yourself to avoid falling and damaging the cargo.

Throughout the world your presense to other players (if online mode is enabled) will allow for player-made structures and signs to appear in your game. You can award these likes so that other players may reward those who are generous with their time and resources.

You'll encounter some rogue forces too. There are the MULEs which are a hostile entity that will steal your supplies and will enter combat with you if you stray into their territory. There are the BTs that appear during periods of heavy rain. These semi-invisible forces are hostile and will attempt to pull you into the underworld which will force you to respawn and make you lose your progress.

There are a large number of cutscenes in the game, some are from colleagues giving you information but others are fully rendered video sequences which set the story and fill in the world. There is an extensive backstory and text notes which fill in the game's lore and give you a better idea of the world.

Later on you are able to fabricate objects based on blueprints and can upgrade your equipment. The map will open up to you allowing you to travel further and take on riskier jobs.

The visuals in the game are stunning and definitely push the Playstation 4 to new heights in terms of technical achievements. The music and sound in the game is exceptionally well done, some of the named bands contributing songs have done a great job and these always play at the right time. The voice acting is excellent and definitely some of the best VA work I've heard in recent years. Gameplay is understandably a bit of a mixed bag for some, your character is meant to be quite normal so you do have to keep your footing and watch your stamina gauge to avoid tiring yourself.

Take a look at some videos and other reviews and see if this is the right game for you. In my opinion it's great and one of my favourite videogames.

Kohima really hits the mark with this one as the whole point of the game is a mediation of self and how to de cone t a broken and isolated world. The game looks incredible and I found that managing the inventory was a lot more simpler than say managing Mother Base in MGSV. In terms of combat I actually found it engaging, and when I took down my first BT I was HYPE. With more and more experience I found I was able to face almost any challenge the game threw at me. I found the boss fights to be very engaging and found the traversing the obstacles of the landscape to be extremely satisfying. Yes the gameplay is simply “deliver this item to this location” but the story is very compelling once you get to know the cast of characters and who they are as people. Every character has their flaw and failings and that’s what makes getting to know people compelling in a game where you’re connecting everyone to you and each other. Yes the game is sometimes tedious but when is a Kojima game NOT tedious? In my roughly 40 hours with the game I found I was able to overcome challenges through experience and thinking outside of the box. There is no other game like this game and I think that that is the game’s strength. No this game is not for everyone, but for me I like a slow burner with a well designed map and world. I recommend this game to anyone that has played Kojima’s games before or to anyone who simply likes to traverse challenging worlds. I can’t wait to see what Kojima does next! Expand

This game is basically what people who hate sandbox games think sandbox games are like, dull, empty, poorly written, forgetable and full of boring and repetitive tasks. With plot being written like an angsty teens anime fanfiction with lots of plot holes and some political believes of Kojima himself such as totally original "Orange man bad" and characters with the least settle names that anyone could think of, and yes their names do hint their motives. Don't you love when the game treats you like an idiot by giving you away everything you need to know about it but still wants you think it's super complex and sh*t? Mama, Fragile, Dead Man... great names i'm really sure it's fitting... for training bots in a multiplayer game. Any interaction with the characters in a long run is pointless do to the fact we're given away everything we need to know about them at the very start. Gameplay? It's absolutely attriocious, it's basically sandbox game created by someone who never seen a sandbox game and only heard about it from person who hates sandbox games. The whole delivery thing could be an interesting as side mission to earn some extras and not the main theme of the gameplay, people despise that word but it's very accurate represantation of this game. Walking simulator with very little of danger in the game world, reused environment and completly empty world. Sure say it's post-apocaliptic world but than again presence of Monster Energy Drink being so relevant and unaffected literally breaks that illusion. But in my opinion that is great because you are playing a realism game, there are many things that they don't make this game realistic but the how the game is played and how the story is developing it makes it a realism game. The gameplay of this game is not for all because it just feels like a walking simulator especially in the start and if you also do the side quests it can become a little boring because you are going to the same locations so that you can finish all the side quests in the area that you are in. As I said before this game is not for all the gamers but I like it a lot. Kojima's games are always interesting and weird at the same time and that it is why I like it. The graphics are pretty good and the colours that you see in the different locations are pretty good and you don't have a dull feeling that you might have in the older Fallout games, I know that the fallout games needed to be like this so that you get the feeling but the landscapes are a little bit dull. Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
