This game is perfect. I am distracted for hours organizing my deliveries, overcoming the difficulties of the terrain. Add to everything wonderful landscapes, which transport you to nature itself.

Despite the interesting story arc and visually stunning world of Death Stranding, the game slightly suffers from repetitive and tedious game-play.

(After ~140 hrs) The physics of everything is awful. I don't know if it's a real shortcoming or a part of the Great Kojima's Plan. Everything else is beautiful. The only game where I enjoyed reading long texts :)

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Death Stranding took me about 6 months to finish - not because of massive content but because it is so boring to play and feels like work. The graphics and the motion capturing are awesome - however you might ask yourself why USA now looks like Iceland. The basic plot idea about GD, BB, etc. is great and refreshing - however the story Hideo built from it is just not good. At multiple points in the game it spoils you that Amelie and Bridget are the same person, that Amelie is causing GDs to appear and that Clifford is Sam's dad. After you defeated Higgs it takes another 4 hours to finish the game - and there is no story in it. It's just used to stretch the game to at least 30 hours playtime. For example after you killed Higgs Fragile teleports everyone back except YOU - the only person who can stop Amelie and thus is important for humankind. So you have to walk all the way back to the beginning of the game. Why? Ask Hideo. There's just no logical reason to it. The gameplay is so repeating. If you start the game now, install all patches first so you can skip these damn animations of Sam getting in cars, Sam delivering crates, Sam looking at boring holograms, Sam looking at delivery drones walking away, Sam looking at bikes being delivered from your garage, Sam doing this, Sam doing that, ... It just makes you angry when you have to watch them over and over again. Oh and don't forget to get a cover for your X button - you will smash it so many times to go through all of the UIs to accept or finish a delivery. Death Stranding could have been a masterpiece - the gameplay and the story prevents that. So it's just a mediocre game you will play once, then deinstall and forget about. Expand

This game is example why great expectation can lead to great disappointment. That's a good game in terms of story (which is multilayered and full of symbolism and references to Egyptian mythology), graphic, OST and, of course, cast. Also I was glad to see Easter eggs in some NPC (which appearances was copy from famous people!) and additional materials (interviews and e-mails).

Gameplay... That's very arguable thing. Personally I liked process of delivering cargo. Not only because that's pretty meditative but also because as your plot progress grow (and you get new devices) then you will be able to diversify delivery process. Also I highly recommend to play this game with Internet because of infrastructure sharing between all real players. That's very good feeling when you got like for you building from real person.

But my problems with gameplay was linked with enemy encounters. That was pretty boring (although suddenly stealth is more interesting then open encounter because of environment audios and sinister atmosphere but boss battles is the most boring battles that I've ever played, sorry, Kojima).

So I liked this game. But I would not recommend it everyone. And definitely not for the full price.

Finally, an original AAA game. If you like slower paced game and a new genre, you should really love this game. Felt a bit like Breath of the Wild. The acting is amazing and the gameplay foundation is solid.
It's not complex at all, you don't have to manage your inventory as stated somewhere else, there is an automatic triage option.

Of course, as most of us, the story and gameplay intrigued me. I could not play the game after six months of its release and at the time I realized that there were divided opinions.
At first, the game is routine and repetitive. You deliver, and deliver, and deliver. Yes, the landscape in which you traverse each mission is comparable to any Icelandic landscape you see in documentaries, so every delivery is an eyegasm. This part of the game is critical. If you decide that you are not into a delivery simulation gameplay you will throw away one of the most immersive and scientifically satisfying stories you can get in a video game (a remark: I'm not saying scientifically accurate).
After a quarter to a third of the game-run, the routine starts to entangle the complexity of each mission and their relationship with the story of your character and the entire world. Each time you think you are getting the hang of the missions you get surprised by the increasing menaces (and weight) that's expecting you around the corner. Each time you think you understand the explaining behind the whole setting of Death Stranding you are amazed by each data you collect and the NPC share with you, changing your previous understanding (and perhaps, if you are open-minded, your idea of the real-life itself).
If you are expecting a game based in action, stealth, and character customization (such as previous Hideo Kojima's MGS videogame saga) you will not find it in Death Stranding. Whereas if you are trying to find a revealing game, a "gamechanger", a "different" game, Death Stranding it is (a remark: the previous statement does not mean that the game lacks in action and stealth, it's just that it is not filled with them).
In conclusion, nowadays there are tons of action-filled games (and good games, such as Horizon, Zelda BoTW, God of War, TLoU), Death Stranding is not one of them. Complex stories, the ones that leave you thinking over and over in the toilet and shower (such as Christopher Nolan's film Interstellar) are the ones we are lacking today, and not everyone are ready for it, less they are ready to play that story in a videogame. And Death Stranding is one of the latter.

In general, you get what you were promised, an existential question from kojima, a story that explores the untold fears and the darkest corners of the human brain, a tale of the excistence itself, the destruction that we may bring with our careless behaviour against any form of life. Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
