This game is too boring! The fact that is "adding something new" does not justify it's poor gameplay. It is a game, not a movie!

A "REAL" walking simulator (you have to be so careful with your walking, concerning the condition of terrain and the weight you carry in mind) with the passive on-line communications and interesting sci-fi settings. But after all, all of them were just some methods to tell a touching story with a strong message.

The Great: theme, graphics, concepts, scenes. The bad: gameplay. Walk was fun at first, for the player is consistently analysing route and, hence, deciding. But do it for hours and things will get boring. I gave up the game. Couldn't stand more time playing it. STORY : it seems good, but i can't really say since i didn't end it, after all. As they say, its not a game for everyone.

It is nice for a change of pace to play a game where I can focus more on the scenery and story than combat.

That's not to say there is no sense of adventure. Choosing the right route. Planning ahead for multiple loads. Soon enough you'll get vehicles which help a lot.

It has a very satisfying gameplay loop in which you breathe a sigh of relief every time you make a successful delivery. Getting new equipment to help you on your journey is exciting too.

It's a game that prizes patience, helping others, and exploration.

The story is a tale of death and life. Loneliness and human connection. It emphasizes how humans need each other to survive.

The only reason I'm docking 1 point is for the poorly shoehorned in product placement for monster energy drinks and amc's Ride with Norman Reedus. That and some hokey character names. In both cases they slightly detract from the believability of the world. But they quickly become an afterthought once you get into your rhythm.

This is a game I think a lot of people won't "get". It's artsy and weird and has an out-there concept. But it ultimately tells an important story in a really beautiful way, and the world it has built is incredible.

Shame on any critic that's enough of a hack to give this game a good score. I don't know if Kojima productions paid them to lie, or if they're just scared of Kojima fans letting them have it. I can't believe IGN is the only company that showed any integrity with an honest review.
Today I was on the phone with a representative from Sony trying to get a refund, all to no avail. He also said, they've had a ton of calls asking for refunds since the game released. This game is a terribly mundane walking simulator. Kojima has lost his way, and he's NOT a true auteur like Hidetaka Miyazaki (Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro director)
Miyazaki is a master of his craft, and Kojima is a washed up, pretentious, has-been.

    Now,

With that said, I realize the game might not be for everyone and isn't without it's flaws. I do think internet memes created a lot of unreasonable bias preventing potential fans from picking up the game. It's far more than a walking simulator, and only takes a few hours to get to your first vehicle in-game. I feel like most people hating on the walking aspect of the game didn't bother to even play it this far. Throughout the game, you get more and more tools to help you deliver packages more efficiently, all but completely negating making deliveries on foot.

It is more of a delivery simulator, I can kind of agree to that, but the system is designed in a way that it does feel good and doesn't get old for me. I finished the game with over 20 million likes and I can't even remember how many packages I delivered, but it far exceeded what you'd need to do to simply get through the game. And that's something I admired about the game actually, a player could choose how much they wanted to do and play. If you wanted to just do the story, you could get through the game fairly quick and ignore a great majority of the game.

In addition to phenomenal cutscenes and story-telling, the game did a fantastic job integrating the game mechanics into the story itself. There was a reason behind earning 'likes' and it played a bit into the motivations of some of the NPCs.

The game's greatest strength, in my opinion, is the atmosphere it creates for the player. Everything contributes via the story telling and attention to detail. You really do feel isolated out there traveling from point A to B. And for a long time, encounters with BTs stayed spooky as hell. Stepping into a new region to have a beautiful soundtrack play caused me to slow down and take it all in as the song played. I was attached to every single moment spent in the game and I really took my time. I doubt many players spent the time in the game that I did, and I literally did everything getting every achievement and completing every delivery. Any excuse to keep myself immersed in this world.

Why didn't I give the game a 10? Well, a perfect game simply doesn't exist and I believe a 10 is a disingenuous rating (same with a 0). And the game did have its faults, like the animation that alerted you to entering a BT zone. That got old quick and disrupted the game flow as you could not skip it (I've learned that a later patch, after I stopped playing, addresses that). I think the building structures aspect of the game could use a little more polish and quality of life changes. Wouldn't have minded a GPS auto-drive scenario for travelling main roads and frequented paths. AI behavior could have been a little better, particularly friendly porters travelling around.

Last thing I want to touch on, despite the beautifully written and acted story, there was a sequence in particular that was godawful and repetitive for no good reason. Doing the same exact action got old after the second or third time and I can't even remember how many times total you had to do it. I felt myself falling out of the story and getting frustrated with that sequence.

I wish more players gave this game a chance beyond the memes and the first hours before getting to your first vehicle.

Overall, I'd still give the game a solid 9 and I hope Kojima revisits this world again soon and brings Norman Rheedus back for another story. I can't wait to see what else Kojima does.

3 years after the Kojima-Konami split up, the first game from Hideo Kojima’s new production studio has finally released. While I would classify the game as a third-person action/adventure game, the game’s director classifies it as a new genre called – “Strand”. With some people calling this game a glorified walking simulator and some saying it’s one of the greatest games of all time, where does this game truly lie?

The story starts off with you playing as a delivery man named Sam Porter Bridges, who is played by Norman Reedus. Sam must deliver cargo to sectioned-off regions of a post-apocalyptic United States due to the unknown threats of the supernatural event known as the Death Stranding. Sam is then tasked to connect all of America to a collective network to save everyone. Sam is given a BB unit to help him with this task, a baby in a jar that can detect BT’s, which is just this game's version of ghosts. Honestly, I could spend all day just talking about the beginning of the game and all the terminology but that where Death Stranding story gets a lot of its charm. The story is engaging from beginning to end thanks to creative storytelling and a wonderful cast of actors that bring this world and story to life. The ending is one of the emotional and heartfelt rollercoasters I have witnessed this generation. If you are coming to Death Stranding for its story, you will not be disappointed.

The gameplay is trickier to talk about. Is it a walking simulator? – Yes and No. The first few hours can be sluggish as all you will do is walk packages from one location to another. This may turn some off from the game, but later portions start to pick up the pace. After the 3rd episode in the game, you are able to craft useful structures, signs, weapons, and vehicles that can help you or other players advance in the story. These structures can be given likes so you can see how many people found what you built and how useful it was to them. This sense of community and how you help each other progress is a big part of the game. There are 3rd person shooting segments every now and again, but that's not the primary focus of the game. It’s a game that some people will like and others will not, but despite that, I had fun helping other people reach their goals and encouraging them to see Sam’s journey to the end. There are moments where you will be bored or frustrated, like the beginning of the game or trudging through the snow at slow speeds, but if you’re willing to put in the work and see past some of the games greater flaws, there is fun to be had.

The game is a technical marvel. One of the best looking games on the PS4 by a long shot. The little details help flesh out the world and bring the actors' performances to life. Glitches are few and far between. Players getting stuck to obstacles and other little things rarely happen. The soundtrack is a fantastic mix of original and licensed songs. The Decima engine has come a long way since its first title, Horizon: Zero Dawn.

Death Stranding is honestly a hard game to review so I hope most of my thoughts on the game are clear. I think it’s a fantastic experiment when it comes to doing something new with video games. It can be boring at points but one thing that is never lost throughout the experience is the amazing story and how it is worked into what going on in the gameplay. If you’re on the fence about this game, I would wait until it’s on sale before picking it up. It’s hard to fully recommend this game, so you’ll have to come to your own conclusion on if you will like what is offered in Death Stranding. Whether you end up liking Death Stranding or not, it’s still one hell of a rollercoaster with a lot of thought and care put in to it.

    Pros:
    +Fantastic Story
    +Great Soundtrack
    +Top Notch Acting
    +Gameplay Centered On Community

    Cons
    -Very Slow Start
    -Some Frustrating Slow Parts

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
