Dear Ubisfot - the bigger and longer isn't always better.
If you make a game that long then at least make a satisfying ending after these >100h. At least one the 3 endings (main story, England conquer, Order) should be satysfying, but they were all just bleh.
When it comes to the story in general - it's bloated and majority of it just doesn't matter. Some of the arcs don't add anything

When it comes to the story in general - it's bloated and majority of it just doesn't matter. Some of the arcs don't add anything to the story, the devs just added them there to make your gameplay 10h longer (or more).
World events were designed to be very short, but due to that they are usually also very forgetable and pointless. I get the idea that Ubisfot is criticized for repetitive side quest, but this is not the best solution. I would like to see less side activities, but at the same time they should be more meaningful to the character and/or the story.
Apart from that, they game had of course its good points - graphics, some story arcs, exploring the beautiful open world (especially Norway).

Going away from stealth is another thing which annoyed me a lot considering you still need to do stealth for trophy ,they should have kept Eagle abilities ( Ravan in this case) . There are also bugs even tho I waited on purpose all this time for UBISOFT to fix some of them and yet still in middle of mission sometimes I will have my character just fly up in the sky for no good reason forcing me to reload and do whatever I was doing again.
I always play AC games for Platinum trophy and as long as they are normally I enjoy them ,this game is just a pain in my ass and story is fairly predictable.
*If you are hunting platinum trophy there is a nice surprise for you when you get to certain mystery towards the end of the game called Saint Faith which was supposed to be fixed and yet still preventing people from getting Platinum trophy.
And just to clarify this game is FAR from Garbage as some people call it but it's nothing special either.

Story: I never found any AC story mind blowing but I liked the characters and the way the game tells the story in the form of chapters.
Problem is that half looks filler but still made me follow to see the end
Gameplay: The world is big and beautiful. You already know it's simple and heavy and doesn't have the possibilities that Ghost of Tsushima offers. I wish it had more combo options

Music: Good for listening in-game, not so good for downloading playlist on spotify

Overall: Wait for the price drop and will worth it. It's a fun game with tons of content to do and collect (Weapons, mysteries, Settlement, Hunt, Hunt the order, play in Asgard and Vinland) with good-ish story and gameplay

Barely had anything to do with assassins. So if you're looking for an assassins creed game? You might as well just play the previous titles (excluding Odyssey)

Its incredibly bloated and by the third or even by the second act you just want it to end. Stealth is pretty much not an option, ever, since enemies can spot you with their backs turned from a mile away.

Massive world, quests, combat, everything was good. Yes. I had that feeling IN 2013 when Assassin's Creed: Black Flag came out. It's been seven years and there's barely innovation. You're playing the same game but with different settings. For people who have played Assassin's Creed for the last 13 years, gaming at least for the past 20 years, Ubisoft will simply not satisfy you anymore unless they change up the formulas a bit.

    The bad:
    - The parry system has a delay. Comparing to Ghost of Tsushima where Jin Sakai instantly holds his blade up to deflect enemy attacks at the exact moment you press L1, Eivor (the main protagonist)tries to deflect an attack in 0.5 seconds after you pressed the L1 button. Not sure if this is a design flaw or done purposely, but I didn't encounter any of this in the last Assassin's Creed.

    - Again, the combat is rather uninspired. Comparing to Ghost of Tsushima where you get 4 fighting styles, you can equip various weapons on your left and right hand. It feels very buggy when your right hand is a heavy weapon and your left hand is a hammer.

    - They look most of the loot away. You can't really collect as many weapons and armor or gear anymore and compare their stats instantly in the menu now. Most of your rewards when you complete quests or raids will result in you getting more crafting components. These crafting components can then use it for upgrading. Not gonna lie, you might just happen to keep every gear without selling any of them when you complete the game.

-Maps way too huge with nothing to collect. Personal preference. Since there is no gear to actually collect, it's kind of pointless to wander around and plunder. Sure, you can collect the wealth to upgrade your settlement, but it feels pointless.

    - Dull characters and story. The Vikings are rather honorable and tamed, and not as brutal as they are supposed to be in their historical counterpart. Though I suppose they are depicted as the actual heroes of the story so they can't have the brutality shown and portrayed in the game. In the story, you travel from one place to another, constantly having new characters shown in an area where you have to earn their for them to pledge their allegiance to you. Rinse and repeat and that's pretty the story. The amount of characters in this game makes you care less and less the more you are introduced.

    - Frustrating to find the treasures. Is it even worth it?

So, if you are inexperienced or unfamiliar with Ubisoft games, you will love this game.

As a male Eivor, I counted only 1 female romance option and lost track around 7 homosexual characters - not very inclusive. The scenery, while probably accurate, is the most dull choice they could've made. It is almost nothing but swamp and field, which is difficult for a climbing-based game. Also, several side quests can't be completed because the game refuses to acknowledge anonymity status after eliminating everyone. Gameplay was fair, but the antagonist was predictable. If they fixed the story and quests, then maybe I'd bump the rating up to a 1. Or if they actually listen to customer submitted glitch reports before releasing unwanted DLC expansions. Not that they probably care. And by the way, this is from multiple gamers, not just me. Expand

    İyiGame Good Things

    Story (No spoilers)
The story of the game lasts for a minimum of 60 maximum 90 hours according to the gameplay. This is good news for those who pre-order the game like me or buy it shortly after the release, but it contains a handicap that can be liked in general, but it progresses very disconnected from each other, unfortunately. The 20-minute episode in the final of the game did not satisfy me, but this does not show that it is bad, I can say that it is an Assasin's Creed game with a good final.

    Play
Even though it feels very strange after experiencing 100+ hours of power fantasy and origins in Assasin's Creed Odyssey, the gameplay of the game depends on the person's ability to parry and attack at the right time is a concept that I always like and generally the finisher animations repeat themselves after 70 hours of playing. I can also say that it is satisfactory, the feeling of the hit is still weak, but it is stronger than origins and odyssey in general, I can say that I did not experience a certain error problem or animation glitch while playing, so it has a nice gameplay but unfortunately it cannot handle a 70-hour game.
    Graphics
I finished the game on PlayStation 4 and I can say that the water appearance and effects were better compared to the first 2 games of the series, but of course since it is a brand that releases a game every year or 2 years, I did not see a difference, of course, this is my ps4. It may also be due to my playing so I do not go too long here.
    Game's Map
England and Norway are beautifully reflected, but I think it is too colorful for a country that has constant rainfall and sees the sun once a month, or I look at it in detail.

To me it looks like the members of a certain religious group following a certain religion of peace are trying to find ways to justify that they are gaining a foothold for their culture the current age all around northern Europe, hence they had the very good idea of attempting to rewrite the history of northern Europe. I guess that is the point of Woke culture. Unluckily I couldn't ask for the purchase to be refunded or I would have asked so.

As has been the case with the last two AC games, it's really nice to look at, and the developers do a nice job of trying to insert the fictional "assassin" in with actual historical characters and various deities/mythological creatures which makes the story interesting. Unfortunately, the side quests are grindy (though blessedly finite), so cleaning up to get the Platinum (even with YouTube University to help) is daunting (despite a significantly smaller map than Odyssey). Voice acting is uneven, but I entertained myself by pretending that the actors for Basim and female Eivor were having a contest to smoke the most cigarettes during production. The music was also lackluster save for Einar Selvik's in-battle vocal compositions (disappointing, because I liked Jesper Kyd and Sarah Schachner's previous AC contributions). Improvements over the last installment include getting rid of the infinitely generating side quests and mercenaries, the animal hunts are far less grindy (remember the Elephant battles in Origins? Sheesh), it is actually possible to assassinate brutes/more powerful enemies (thank you), but there is a timing mechanic that determines your success (fair enough). Step backs include long loading times (for either fast travel or respawning), the nonsensical stamina system (blocking tires you, but attacking gets you more stamina ??), the irritating fishing mode, and a thoroughly predictable final act, with the possible exception of how the past ties in with the modern day arc. Seriously, who didn't know who the head of the "Templars" in this game was by the halfway point? I was ambivalent toward the levelling system, but I will say that the "return fire" special ability is by far my favorite mechanic introduced into the series in a LONG time. The AI's ability to spot you on normal stealth difficulty (vs. Master Assassin, which you can select early on) is a little too "good." Not as bad as "Unity" which could spot you WHILE BLENDED FFS, but I can only imagine being frustrated had I gone the more difficult route. Valhalla is a good time until you complete the story. Then it just kind of...lingers. Expand

I'm about 20 hours in. About to complete the second story arc.

The gameplay is fine, a little refined in the new format of AC games. Nothing groundbreaking.

The main issue is the **** bugs. The bugs break immersion almost evey 10 minutes(minor issues like collision), extremely PATHETIC character animations etc. But I expected all this.
What I didn't expect were the various game-breaking issues that don't let you complete objectives. And many of them can't be solved be reloading the game. Raiding a fort? Collecting wealth will not register.
Doing a world event? Can't complete it because the game will prompt you to get out of combat, when you're already out.

The state that this game is in, I'm honestly so surprised that there's isn't more of a hue and cry about it. Would not recommend.

The only redeeming thing is the story, which I'm finding interesting (till now at least).

Edit: My original rating was 3. After completing the game on PS5 in around 85 hours, it has dropped to 2.
This is perhaps the most frustrating Game I have ever played. Certainly the most frustrating AC game. The issues I mentioned above are still there.
On top of that, this broken mess is too long. The story stopped feeling good after completing a couple more arcs.
I was about 45 hours in when I realised I hadn't even completed 50% of the main story yet. This game is like eating 2kgs of bread. It's bland, and boring, but it fills your stomach.

If you have nothing else to play, you can give this atrocity a try. If you hav literally anything else to do, stay away from this broken, buggy piece of sh*t.

However, the characters are very uninteresting, bland and not a little charismatic, what makes them pretty much forgettable. Also, all the characters in this game, viking, english or from anywhere else, can speak the same language and understand each other, what totally breaks the immersion of the game. The graphics are good in current gen, nothing to complain. The soundtrack is good too, the only thing i didn't like is that there's no soundtrack in the custcenes, just the character's voices. The minigames are cool as well. Now, let's talk about what i didn't like at all in this game. The combat has many, many problems. When you attack an enemy, sometimes the enemy doesn't feel your punchs and just take damage and attack you in the middle of your combo. Also, some enemies attacks have a strange red effect like they had superpowers in a game that tries to be realistic. The enemy AI is pretty dumb too, the archers are simply blind and the enemies are very predictable. But the main problem is that the game is extremely easy. I played this in the highest difficulty and, even so, the combat was so easy that the stealth became useless. The missions in the game are overwhelming boring and repetitive. Making alliances is the most boring, tedious and dull thing in the world. Every quest you have to kill a bunch of guys, do annoying and generic stuff for someone that you don't care about only to bring this dude to your side, and that lasts for hours and hours. The sidequest are very **** too but at least they're short. But seems like Ubisoft made the game how it is on purpose, because the game is infested with microtransactions that accelerate your progress in the game, it's really disgusting to see a 70$ Single Player Game having microtransactions, so imagine having a bunch of it, just like the previous ones, what a greedy and disgusting company. Really, that's the last time i'm buying an Assassin's Creed game, i'm done of playing 60 hours of an average 70$ game that begs me to pay even more to have a "good experience". Expand

    Press R1 to win

It tries to bring back what was missing previously.

Expand

Until Resident Evil Village comes out, it's literally only 2020 game that is still worth playing. Doom Eternal got old very fast and i'm not gonna play Tony Hawk 1+2 Remake 24/7. Cyberpunk 2077 was one of the biggest fails of all time. Resident Evil 3 Remake was too short and boring. Last of Us 2 is one of the worst games ever made. Watch Dogs Legion is pathetic. Final Fantasy VII Remake has no reason to play again, even tho good game. Ghost of Tsushima has one of the worst camera angles in any video game ever, so i just can't play it, but it doesn't seem very interesting anyway. Marvel's Avengers is a joke. Mafia 1 Remake had good story, but has one of the emptiest open-worlds ever, there's absolutely nothing to do or explore.

So what's left? Literally only one game - Assassin's Creed Valhalla! It's not best game ever / not best AC game, but at least it's fun enough and DLC's almost look more interesting than main game, so i'm hyped. There's obviously always option to play older games (i do that literally all the time), but this review is for people who want something new.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The old saying "Quality over quantity" sums up the problems of this game. For a game with so much "content" it is incredibly boring almost from start to finish. Having said that I couldn't actually bring myself to finish after I'd already sunk around 70 hours into that damn thing, I wasn't even near finished with it. It is a game that keeps you thinking "any minute now it's going to get better and that switch is going to go off where I'm having fun and locked in" but that moment never comes.

Most if not nearly all of the optional content on the map is absolutely not worth finding and players will learn this very quickly. There are a handful out of the 100s of markers that are interesting but it really does feel like filler to pad out the experience. The story is incredibly boring, dreary, and drawn out beyond comprehension. Once you've taken one region you've taken them all and by the 4th or 5th you're just done with it. You don't care about any of the characters like you might have done in Odyssey say with Kassandra, and as such there is little to no personal investment in any of it.

If you like running around dreary English fields for 70 - 100 hours doing nothing that matters then try it out. I was warned not to but I took a chance and I feel like I wasted 70 hours.

The game would be fun, but it is nearly April 2021 (after the game was released in Nov 2020) and it is inevitable you will run into several game-breaking bugs involving dialogue not working or dead characters. Ubisoft's bug-fixing process is slow, unresponsive and ultimately unhelpful. At least AC Origins had a 'reload quest objective' commmand.

Avoid this game like the plauge, stick with Odyssey where they don't try to force microtransactions on you at every turn and you can get a tonne of awesome gear just by looting treasure chests and doing quests . You can't even change your look without paying in Valhalla, what a joke

With all the microtransactions this should be a free to play game. I knew far cry new dawn was a sign of more microtransactions being forced (if you want to enjoy the game) instead of optional

Ubisoft game now just seem to create problems that can be solved only using microtransactions so they can go to hell. Far Cry, Assassin's Creed and Watchdogs were my favourite game series and I am not interested in buying or playing any of their new games now. Now the ubisoft customer is just a whale to them or they don't want you as a customer if all you give them is $99 for the base game. $99 is not enough for Ubisoft, they want more and more

So this whining is just typical thing that old gamers waste their time on, who really never cared about Assassin's Creed anyway and are pissed that their "favorite rpg" Fallout is dead and gone. I would say it's sad reality to live in, where actual gamers need to co-exist with these annoying old whiners, but at the same time, it's actually funny reality, because in the end, who cares really? They can whine as much as they want, it doesn't matter, nobody cares. So yeah, great game. Expand

In execution it buckles under the weight of expectations that Origins and Odyssey built. Trying to bridge the gap between the old and new AC titles Valhalla fails on both fronts. Rushed, badly planned, development problems due to upheaval and COVID; whatever the reason Valhalla lacks any polish of the series previous titles. It's gameplay systems don't tie into each other to make any meaningful impact and half the time you're not sure if they're working and just aren't very good, or they're flat out broken. Combine that with a wold that is plenty large, but filled with trivial side content like stacking cairn stones. Say what you will about Odyssey and it's endless fetch quests, they were presented well felt like they fit in the world. Valhalla removes all side quests, making this beautiful world nothing but an empty path that goes from main quest to main quest.

The main story is good, but too often it suffers from the same storytelling issues that Origins had. Important conversations are presented in the most basic manner, zooming in on the two characters and having them replay the same animations over and over again while you can rotate the camera around. By far this is a huge step back from Odyssey and it's Bioware-esq presentation. And that's the main problem with Valhalla, while trying to bridge the old and the new it feels too new for the fans that love the old games, and too old for fans that love the new games.

There's a lot of craftsmanship that went into this game, but it's unfinished and badly presented.

I remember how I used to play Odyssey all day long like no game before or after it. But when I saw the first trailer my excitement started to fade away - robotic animations, graphics unworthy of 2020 and gameplay that didn't seem to improve in any way. And that is a Ubisoft game trailer, meaning they showed us the best parts! Anyway, I didn't lose hope and bought the game on release day. And let me tell you after 50 hour into the game - this is such a disappointment after Odyssey.
I love long open-world games, because I love exploring the map and getting a home-like feeling from the environment, but in this case I'm trying to finish the storyline out of respect for the series and my complenionist personality, and not because I actually want to.
Maybe as a standalone game or for someone who never played AC, this game seems like fun, but for me it is the most boring of them all.
They got rid of side quests and replaced them with loot hunt which is one of the worst downgrades of them all. Side quests are the best part! What genius decided to get rid of them? I don't feel any urge to go looking for the new gear or upgrades for one simple reason - I don't need them. The game is laughably easy. Sometimes I even get too lazy to spend my upgrade points because they have so little effect on the battle outcome. Sure, sometimes you get bosses here and there that might need up to 5-6 takes to beat them, but nothing that would motivate me to spend hours on a grindfest to upgrade my specs. The same goes for the gear - in Odyssey there were tons of armor that I would actually pay attention to and frequently upgrade or change, in Valhalla I just stick with my original gear for the entire game.
Next - the story is dull and the characters are bland. At some point I just didn't even bother following the story of reading into awful dialogues. Myriad of forgettable characters come and go too quickly - why remember someone's story and personality if I will be killing them within 20 minutes and never see them again?
Although it's not developer's fault this time, but the map is very uninspiring. Every single town looks exactly the same, countryside looks identical wherever you go. I loved exploring the surroundings in Odyssey and Origins. Here, I don't have that urge whatsoever. I'm bored to the death by the view.
I know they tried to make their own gwent or whatever, but I literally played every single mini game in the town once and never wanted to go back. Even when it was required by the quest, I just wanted to get it over with and move on.
And don't even let me started on attacking the forts. In Odyssey I remember how I was planning the entire thing while looking at it with my bird and then carefully executing the plan. In this one, I either just go front attack (again, because the game is too easy, so I have no motivation to go stealth) or, during raid, just open the doors and wait for my army of vikings to do the fighting.
All in all, they downgraded pretty much every single fun part of Odyssey I can think of, so I'm pretty sure I won't be buying the next game on day one, even though I'm a fan of the series. Be better, Ubisoft.

Other than those few concerns the game has crashed on me a few times but just a few days ago they released a big patch so im glad they are still improving on the game and fixing bugs because ive run into a handful of them playing so far.

It's not only fact that RDR2 had way way way longer development time, it's also fact that Rockstar is flagship of open world games in general. I have finished Unity almost each year since 2015. I'm also playing 4 constantly, but i haven't finished it as much, because it's way longer game and i love to just free roam there. Now i would say that despite not liking 1,3, Revalations or Rogue (i hate to play as Templar), i would say that absolutely loving later games like 4, Unity, Syndicate and Origins makes me as much Assassin's Creed fan, as someone who only likes first 3.

In fact, i would say i'm bigger fan than these people, because if someone gave up on this series in 2012, then how can you consider yourself a fan? Maybe early fan, but overall if you hate majority of these games, then you are not fan of this series. It's that simple. Why i'm even talking about it is because watching some youtubers making videos "Valhalla disappointed me", "Valhalla is boring" etc, made it very clear that these people were never gonna like Valhalla anyway. No matter what Ubisoft did, these people wouldn't be happy right now and they would still make their videos whining about smallest details that they didn't like.

Instead of enjoying new games for that they are, instead these people want games to be what they want. That's obviously fair, but again, seems like they have ignored this series since 2012. It was so obvious what Valhalla was going to be. How can you be disappointed, when trailers and Ubisoft people on twitter made it very obvious what this game is going to be. Basically no matter what, these people just wanted Valhalla to be this most basic and boring AC Revalations or AC 3 clone and that's all these people want. That's the only AC game they want and if it's not that, then they are going to hate it. That's the sad reality actual AC fans need to live in, where Ubisoft makes great games, but nostalgic people who can't move on are going to hate these games and make their videos. Main problem with these videos is that these people are very clearly trying to manipulate and make other people believe that this game (and other games) suck. While actually problem is not the game, problem is that they just don't like it. Just cause you don't like something, doesn't mean that it's actually bad ya know?

Conclusion : I very much enjoyed Valhalla, it's not perfect, but it's way better than Odyssey was. Story is more interesting than Odyssey's story. It has beautiful graphics, not as good as RDR 2, but still good enough and very modern looking. Combat is fun, main character (male Eivor) is very likable and better than main characters in Origins and Odyssey.

Why the hell you take away us making a lynx/bear/whoever buddy, no health regeneration, so many glitches in the game which is ridiculous too.

There are far fewer cookie-cutter outposts than in previous AC’s, and most sidequests now offer an interesting story, sometimes even with a less-than-obvious solution. While some anti-grind measures have backfired, Ubisoft is on the right track. [Issue#250, page 56]

Assassins Creed Valhalla is a wonderful addition to the AC franchise. It manages to avoid the tropes that became overplayed and focuses on a small well structured story. The fighting mechanics are enjoyable and offer many choices to fit different playing styles. There are a significant amount of bugs and the AI is underwhelming at times. But it's still another step in the right direction for Ubisoft.

When Valhalla is at its best, it evolves series mechanics. And when you’re cruising down river, about to blow your raiding horn, there’s nothing quite like it. [Issue#183, p.71]
