The gameplay doesn't do stealth well for going back to it's Assassin's Creed Routes with hidden blades and hoods, feels tacked on and honestly feels like the wrong way to play. The parkour and traversal also doesn't feel fluid, or real, which is a real step-back for the series. Expand

The only good thing another this game is the that the combat is marginally better than odyssey. Apart from that the world is empty and bland. The main story quests are repetitive and boring. The hidden ones/Assassins are hardly in the story. Also the fantasy elements have no place in a series based on some level of believability.

Assassins creed is no longer assassins creed the brand name has become a cash cow for Ubisoft and they are moving to a terrible cut and paste RPG system that promotes micro transactions. Ubisoft if your reading this go back and remake the original trilogy or make some decent story driven games.

I had a lot of fun with this one. I really felt the story and side-characters were fun and well-developed, and there were so many different things to do an explore on the map.

My only complaints are that A) the graphics got a bit janky at times, and B) they somehow managed to come up with a side activity MORE annoying than paper-chasing, in the form of the Cairn Stacking Challenges.

Excelente para ser mi primer assassins creed, tiene mucho que explorar y sobre todo accion por doquier, lo unico que no me gusto es que el personaje tiene una barra de resistencia como si fuese un dark souls, lo que aveces frustra un poco

This game seems to have lost all the things that made Odyssey great but doubled down on the chore-like aspects. Ubisoft made a big deal about there being no "side quests". Ubisoft made a big deal about there being no "side quests". Instead there are "events"; blue dots on the map that are functionally identical to sidequests but don't appear in a menu (very useful). The maps have also lost the colour and variety that made Greece feel so exciting. The biggest step back for me is the combat. In an attempt to emulate Fromsoftware, there is an emphasis on parrying and stamina management. Unfortunately, parrying feels very inconsistent and the combat does not suit the frequent scenarios when you're facing a Swarm of saxons in a raid. It only works in 1-on-1 boss fights that are few and far between. I do like the more focused selection of weapons but the upgrade and levelling system is atrocious. Upgrades are made in minuscule increments and abilities are not unlocked, instead you must find them on a map that doesn't tell you where they are unless you are already standing near them; eww. Odyssey may have gone a bit too far turning you into an unstoppable demigod but in Valhalla I can barely tell the difference between combat at the end of the game from at the start.
The narrative is also very sloppy. There are good parts, I admit such as the Sciropescire arc, but the game really whimpers out in the second half. The finale feels so insignificant that it took me another hour before I even realised I had finished the story. I only noticed because there were no significant quests left to do.
As a Welsh man I also find the map disappointing. There's no Cornwall, no Wales, no Scotland, and a slab of Ireland is saved for the DLC. Considering how massive the scope of Odyssey was it feels weird that we don't get to visit Scotland or Anglessey, yet we do get a piece of America as a reference to Assassins Creed 3? Overall, Valhalla just feels so meh and such a missed opportunity. This is a game where you can literally wield mjolnir, yet it entirely fails to feel satisfying in any manner.

The dullness in front of the scripts is very large, sometimes you wait 2 seconds, sometimes the download icon drops, which can hang for 5 seconds or freeze forever. So, actually, my second attempt to play this game ended, having approached the first synchronization point, I got a pause for the game with a loading icon, while it was possible to enter the menu, see the map, but it was impossible to move further. Two big open worlds full of secrets and treasures, amazing. Nice graphics. Game story solid with interesting plot. Performance could be better, needs patching. Definitely an upgrade from Odyssey, they did a lot of job in characters. Skill tree is a knock out, although bit chaotic. Love getting lost in there.

Here's literally 4 minutes and 47 seconds of loading screen to totally kill the vibe. Did you like the climbing sequences in any game ever? Neither did ubisoft but here's more climbing than necessary with mountains that look only slightly better than Skyrim. The only positives about this game are the occasionally vibrant scenery and the potentially intriguing story that you don't get to play because you need to level up to level 400 first. Absolutely disrespectful to the players to release this game after giving the players two broken messes of AC games back to back right before this. I've pumped about 75 hours in and have noticed my enjoyment decrease significantly as my play time increased. While I would rather have that time back, at least I can say I gave it a chance instead of leaving a 10/10 48 hours after release. Also the cats look more like Shrek than they look like cats Expand

Drum roll... 5 Skill Points! This should have been made obvious as I would never have wasted so much time had I known that Ubisoft probably ommitted that knowing some idiots like me would think there's a grand reward for all that boring, boring environment scanning. Ubisoft is becoming the Atari of this generation... That is to say, single-handedly ruining the gaming industry with UNINSPIRED generic copy/paste BS. But to be fair you can't just blame Ubisoft. Gaming has become big business and with big business came big corporations. Corporations are created to focus pretty much solely on profits. It's the nature of the Beast. so ultimately you know game companies come out with people with great ideas inspired you know behind the engines and just needing the company to feel their inspiration and then they become corporations and they just start churning lifeless plastic out to the masses so as to make a buck. Sadness. I fully believe we may very welll find Ubisoft dumping thousands of copies of Assassin's Creed 15 into a landfill in the Nevada Desert one day soon. This is the last time I will even consider purchasing anything from Ubisoft. Rather wait for the real artists like Rock Star & Bethesda's lot to do the industry justice again... Expand

They are too mature to argue on internet. They don't care about pointless drama. They just want to enjoy games. But i feel like sometimes Ubisoft fans should fight back stronger. Yeah it's cool you praise these things on reddit, but there's way more important sites and metacritic is one of them.

No youtuber never mentions some random reddit "praise post" but they always show metacriti'c user score and these videos get 100 000's on views. This is manipulation 101. I know it's pathetic, because metacritic user score is most meaningless thing on this planet, but fact is, that these people are using it. It's just bunch of losers, usually some tasteless crackwatch-reddit users who hate on Ubisoft in general. They don't even play their games, they don't even care about their games. They are just pathetic, whiny losers and nothing else.

When Far Cry 6 comes out in few month, i guarantee, bunch of Ubisoft haters (who will never buy Far Cry 6 btw) start giving it 0/10 scores and i feel like this time Ubisoft fans really, really need to fight back. It has gone too far. Cdproject red released most talentless game in 20 years and these people still try to praise it, while hating on Ubisoft's perfectly decent games that actually work. Like i said, these scores don't matter at all, they never did, never will, but i feel like Ubisoft fans (and there are millions) should for once actually try to fight back, even if it's just to annoy these haters. Even that would be worth it.

It has nothing to do with company. Ubisoft has made lots of games i don't care about at all (Breakpoint, Division 2, For Honor, Crew 2) and if Valhalla would be one of these bad games i would ignore it as well, but that's not the case. Valhalla simply isn't bad game. It's just not and nothing, absolutely nothing will change that fact.

Valhalla brings these things back, even if it's parkour is only a shadow of what it used to be in AC Unity, it's still better than anything Odyssey had. Expand

This game is abysmal. They released it containing so man bugs and for a supposed triple A game that is shameful. The game was rendered UNPLAYABLE. You can not proceed past this point even despite 6 updates in the last year since it was reported. This game has completely turned me off of not only the franchise but Ubisoft Montreal altogether. They will never get another dollar from me. Overall nothing bad to say really. It's not most fun, most innovative game of all time, but it's still solid enough. People who give it 0 out of 10 are way over reacting. Sure it has some bugs, but what game doesn't that is as large as Valhalla? What matters is that Ubisoft is listening fans, adding new content and fixing problems. Valhalla continues in the manner of Origins and Odyssey. If you liked those two games, you will probably like this one too. Only, next to the main and usual side quests you have now your own settlement that you can build and develop and always return to. It is a nice new thing but far from a settlement (or a camp) that you have in Red Dead Redemption II, for example. Upgrading houses andValhalla continues in the manner of Origins and Odyssey. If you liked those two games, you will probably like this one too. Only, next to the main and usual side quests you have now your own settlement that you can build and develop and always return to. It is a nice new thing but far from a settlement (or a camp) that you have in Red Dead Redemption II, for example. Upgrading houses and buildings in your settlement opens a few side quests but apart from that there is nothing much to do there.

Speaking of the story… nothing special here. You are a Viking, who is looking for allies in order to conquer England. The world is huge and you play partly in Norway and the largest part of the game you will be in England. In every region you have a couple of main quests before you get yourself an ally. It was all fairly interesting but after finishing a couple of regions I felt like I was in an endless tunnel with no light to announce the end (the moment I was finished with one region, another one would open… and then another one… and another one…).

After I finished the game, I wondered why the title was “Assassin's Creed” because the game (a story at least) had so little to do with an Assassin’s Creed. The main character is a Viking (he is not an Assassin), who only meets a few Assassins on the way but there is nothing more that connects this game or story with Assassin's Creed. Except the gameplay, of course.

When I started playing, I was surprised by the graphics, which are not bad but I have seen much better looking games from the previous year. Before I started Valhalla, I played The Last of Us Part II after which Valhalla looked almost like a previous generation game. The animation is mostly average; lip synching is bad for the most part and voice expressions that you hear usually do not match face expressions that you see on the screen.

One of the main issues: the game is way too long. It took me 149 hours to complete the game with all side quests and find all treasures and chests. This would have been a really cool and fun game if it would have been 40 or 50 hours long. But 149 hours… There must be a moment to stop and finish something but no… Ubisoft rather opens another region on the map and another set of the same missions. After 149 hours, everything that was good about this game turned out bad and boring at the end.

Within a huge world you will find plenty of nice landscapes but also an awful lot of copy-pasting, which is already a long tradition for Ubisoft. There are so many identical buildings, houses, churches, so many identical puzzles… It is all cool at the beginning but to complete the game you will have to do those cool things so often that at the end, you will not find them cool anymore.

Side quests (called “world events”) are generally short events that will take few minutes to solve and they are a bit more interesting compared to the previous games (if you ignore the fact that there are again far too many of them and some of them are quite retarded).

There are less armors and weapons in this game, which some people will hate but I found it better, less confusing and you definitely spend less time browsing the menu. The combat is not the best in the world but it unfortunately ages fast and gets boring because of the game’s huge length.

My playthrough was really, really buggy and bugs appeared far too often and interrupted the gameplay flow. One of the most frequent bugs was that after a longer horse ride your character and horse would freeze while entering a city or a village. There is probably no game without bugs but this game has too many of them..

Missing textures are also a big issue in this game. Textures of the roads or nearby houses would are often like in a PS1 video game. I personally think that this is unacceptable especially when developers wave all the time with phrases such as “next generation experience”. This was far from that.

It feels that half of the game are loading screens. Even when you only wanted to talk with some pedestrians on the street there was a black loading screen! Fast travel was senseless in most of the cases unless you wanted to skip a very big distance (sometimes it was faster to ride a horse than to use the fast travel option). I always used fast travel when I needed to go to the toilet.

All in all, I enjoyed the first 15 or 20 hours of the game but later I could not get rid of an “unfinished” feel that followed me through the whole game surely because Ubisoft continues a tradition of publishing new Assassin's Creed games far too often. It is not surprising that there are always so many issues because one year is obviously not enough for a huge open world game like this (if you want a great game at the end, I mean…). Ubisoft also continues a tradition of horrible writing, bad acting, copy-pasting as if the only goal is to make the longest game with a largest world possible with thousands of side quests in it.

Haven't finished it yet, but i can say i have had so much more fun with this, than i did with Odyssey and Origins combined. Valhalla finally feels like actual AC game. Specially after they added Assassin outfits. There used to be some bugs, but most of them are fixed by now. Good game.

Game has good elements: story, character design, graphics, landscapes, city design, immersion, and great variety of weapons and gear that offer cosmetic styles (but not much else). I also like the raiding and siege components where you can experience a bigger combat feeling that plays on newer consoles well. Good value for money based on overall hours of play, just for the story itself.

BUUUUUT there's a ton to hate also.

    1. First, if playing console seems you MUST be signed on all the time through ubi trashy app. There's no point in this other than to hire another person's crappy npc viking or look at dumb in-game photos. There's a revenge system, but its not even worth doing cause they make the "confirm kill" take about 1 minute. Its boring. Series X also has a bad tendency of d/c on wifi, meaning you often have to reboot system or restart the game - UBI literally wont let you continue playing cause of that crap. I'm regularly spammed at least 1x an hour with "you must be online to play" or "verify you own this game". There is NO offline option I can find for xbox.

    2. Lot of the side action is just tedius crap that was made by people that hate video games or hate their customer base at Ubi. Cairn is a great example of torture stacking rocks like a primate with horrible controls. There's also chasing tattoo papers with bad parkour mechanics across every town. There's even fishing - that i find it's I just easier to shoot with arrows. But Most obnoxious are the anomalies which are parkour puzzle craps that offer no fun or purpose to the story. You're a scientist playing Eivor and transform in for these crap runs, but luckily youre also a parkour expert that is going to climb invisible blocks chasing random data cube while aligning magic light beams. Its dumb, unnecessary, and destroys any immersion of the game. I did a few of them, now avoid all of these now in came since I shouldn't be getting pissed off playing a video game that should be pleasurable. Whatever reward is there, it isn't worth the aggravation.

    3. WTF does almost every chest/door need a lock or need to be barred? Why are undergrad entrances so hard to find? Why put oil pots so far away rather than just have a skill that can wreck a flimsy rubble wall? If you add up all the time looking for keys, oil, or a window to snipe through, its not an exaggeration that 20% of the game time is just that. Its like a crappy easter that never goes away.

    4. Glitches galore (still not as bad as the first 3 though!). I've been climbing walls and suddenly I'm being tossed through the sky and have to reload. I've been killed by invincible wolves with 0 health. I've seen my ship flip on land starting a raid (CyberPunk quality glitches).

    5. There are unpolished design elements. As I like the raids and seiges, they have different shortcomings. The raids are too often generic cookie-cutter situations with no unique elements. They get boring quick. The seiges start off excellent early game, then the laziness sets in. The later seiges (2nd with Ivar; Wrath of Druids) felt like I was the only one in combat. Large castles felt empty and there was no excitement like early ones.

    6. The stealth mechanic is broken or doesn't exist. I have it set on lowest difficulty, but there's no way i can get through more than a few guards before I'm detected by some guy on the other side of the fort - of course with hood up. Pair enemies, and 90% of the time, I cant take both out before I'm spotted by the other.

    7. The parkour seems worse than earlier AC games. It's harder to control as the character runs off in their own directions too often.

Other then the controlls being bad, the game is full of bugs, that take all fun you could have while playing away. It gets tireing, if you have to reload the game dozends of times, when objectives dont get completed, npcs that you are supposed to follow, dont move... I could go on and on and on - well let me just add one thing: bugs that were reported over 6 months ago (!) and which are stated to be fixed indeed await a patch and await to be fixed until today. In addition to all of this, the game feels really unrewarding. For collecting items in the world or slaying powerful beasts all you get is a new tattoo. Why am I bothering to do this in the first place if the reward is just bad? At least you get some weapons and armor along the way. But your loadout simply does not matter - enemies are far to easy to kill, the combat can't bring any challenge to the game. You could create multiple armor-sets for ranged combat, close combat, stealth - but you wont, just because you cant save loadouts and changing your equipment, putting runes back in, ... is just too tedious to bother doing.

Over all this game is a big dissappointment after origins and odyssey.

Ubisoft or to be more specific, Assassin's Creed haters are some very, very special kind of people. I think i could never write AC review without mentioning them. Like "uh oh story is boring for my taste, here's your 1 out of 10 score". Pathetic. Anyway, game itself is solid enough. Better and more interesting than two previous mainline AC games. Ironically this game isn't Liberal either. It's as Centrist as you can get in 2021. But obviously conservatives don't like that. It confuses them. Like "how can you possibly be so open minded and see both sides". Sad world we live in. In a way Red Dead Redemption 2 is way more Liberal than this game with it's forced feminist mission and i'm saying that as die-hard Rockstar fan. I guarantee GTA 6 has even more stuff like that, possibly more than any Ubisoft game ever. That's the gaming in 2020s and onward, forever. Deal with it. Witcher 4 will have way more focus on female characters and it will include many black characters. That's just how it will be. Witcher 3 will absolutely NEVER happen again. Never. Inclusion is not bad thing, in fact it is necessary and i think it's time for "certain gamers" to understand that there are all kind of people on this planet. Expand

There are far fewer cookie-cutter outposts than in previous AC’s, and most sidequests now offer an interesting story, sometimes even with a less-than-obvious solution. While some anti-grind measures have backfired, Ubisoft is on the right track. [Issue#250, page 56]

Assassins Creed Valhalla is a wonderful addition to the AC franchise. It manages to avoid the tropes that became overplayed and focuses on a small well structured story. The fighting mechanics are enjoyable and offer many choices to fit different playing styles. There are a significant amount of bugs and the AI is underwhelming at times. But it's still another step in the right direction for Ubisoft.
