A brown, boring, repetitive, poorly paced, poor production value, poorly made, poor story, stale, not challenging, bland characters, poor story, and insultingly short game was the biggest entertainment launch of all time, yet games like Resistance 3 aren't even given the time of day because Tommy **** is killing another brown person. Resistance 3 is a great shooter, it has no regenerating health, no cover mechanics and 10 weapon slots, capturing the spirit of the by-gone age of shooters (Half-Life 2, Serious Sam, Painkiller) with a great story, brilliant multi-player and a truly unforgettable story, is shunned because MW3 came out within the same few months. Now I don't hate MW3 because it's brown, boring, repetitive, poorly paced, has poor production value, is poorly made, has poor story, is stale, not challenging, with bland characters, a poor story, and only 7 hours long, I hate it because of what it represents. 'Hey, Infinity Ward, do you mind if I don't play the multi-player and instead play the single-player only?' 'No! Because we spent all our 6 months of hard work on changing the textures, character models and programming routines of COD4's multi-player and releasing it again in MW3, and if you only play the single-player you will realize that you spent $60 on a handful of multi-player maps, so do you mind if we force you to play multi-player?' 'Kind of do, Infinity Ward' ' I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of all my MONEY!' I can tell you this: there are two kinds of games in this putrid world of ours, those who are made mainly because developers thought it would be a lovely thing for everyone to play (Limbo, Bastion, Psychonauts) and those who are made mainly because the developers thought it would be lovely to add another ballroom to their golden money palace (BioShock 2, Dragon Age 2, Kane and Lynch 2). And you know how I can tell MW3 is in the second camp? Because it has a '3' on the end of it. It's a sequel to a sequel that never needed a sequel, it was fine on its own! But because Innovation to Infinity Ward is what cheeseburgers are to a lactose intolerant Hindu, we are left with this pile of old wank that got an 88 Metascore and we're all left scratching our head. You know, sometimes things our popular for a reason, because they're good, or because Will Smith is in it, but because MW3 is neither of those two, I am left wondering why MW3 was critically acclaimed and on top of that, was the biggest entertainment launch of all time. It saddens me, there have been so many better games, and it still would of angered me if MW3 was at least decent, because decent games don't deserve this much money thrown at them as if they are linked to the pneumonic plague, and after playing Resistance 3 and that Hard Reset thing which is like Painkiller if they chose one of Phillip K.Dicks most incomprehensible plots, it mystifies me how people think MW3 is a better shooter. They are designed so that no matter where you are in the map and no matter what direction you are facing, there is an enemy behind you. There is nowhere on any map where you don't have to be constantly spinning in circles in order to see an enemy coming. This is due to a combination of terrible map design and terrible spawn points. Enemies do not spawn with their teammates, and will instead spawn directly behind you. The guns are all the same. There is permanent lag, even with full bars. The only good part of this game was the campaign, which will take you around 2 hours to beat if you really stretch it out. 88 out of 100? This must be a joke...
Modern Warfare 3 is the worst game in the Call of Duty series and shows what happened to a once great franchise.
First: The Single-Player I know no one is interested in the campaign so I´ll keep this as short as possible. The campaign shows what went wrong with many shooters today. The enemy AI is bad, the gameplay is the same as in Modern Warfare

The plot is OK but not great.
    Multiplayer:
There are no significant changes in the multiplayer. It´s the same as every year and almost feels like a map pack... A 60$ map pack.

There is no need to buy this game. Instead you should buy Modern Warfare 1 or 2.

It's unfortunate that hopes and expectations can't stop a great franchise from derailing. I made this account after seeing Glen Schofield try to get fanboys to up the rating, although zero is pretty harsh, I can't praise this game in anyway. Everything that made me keep coming back to CoD4 and MW2 are gone in this sequel, which is both unsurprising and yet disappointing. The kill streak systems have some nice ideas but the lack of a Nuke is unacceptable; Let Treyarch make the diet CoD games for those who complain about balance, sure MW2 could get ridiculous at times because of nukes, secondary shot guns and quick scoping but guess what? That's what gave it a pulse. When you take away the manic elements that made multiplayer unpredictable and fresh every time around you're left with a giant lifeless corpse without a pulse. Despite all of this, I was hoping that the game would at least deliver some entertaining maps that could compete with high rise or crash, but the developers killed my hopes there too, though they are definitely a step above the maps in Black Ops. Cant believe I spent 60$ for a MW2 map pack. By far the worst game of the 2011 line up. I advise you to stay away from this game. Do yourself a favor and buy BF3, Skyrim or Uncharted 3. Those are games that developers actually took their time on unlike this rerun. Makes you think what did they really work on in the last 2 years because I see nothing new besides a new lame game mode.

I'm really quite surprised that they got away with giving this a $60 price tag. I'll admit Black Ops was fairly similar to Modern Warfare 2, but at least it was DIFFERENT. Modern Warfare 3 is a shameless re-usage of the same engine, even going as far as to use models from Call of Duty 4 in the campaign. While we're on the subject, how about that campaign. It's frustratingly short, and on top of that, the "profound, impacting" moments which laced the experience we're hardly just that at all. They came off as forced and almost bland. The only redeeming (using the term lightly) thing about Modern Warfare 3 is it's multiplayer. Keep in mind that I say loosely, as it's basically a slightly tighter and more varied Modern Warfare 2. That's it. That is literally all it is. Lets wrap it up, this isnt worth my time. What had potential to be something great ended up falling flat on it's face. Modern Warfare 3, or should I say Modern Warfare 2.5, throws up a big sign that says Activision needs to hang up its Call of Duty hat unless it can bring something new to the table. Modern Warfare 2 had already shown that Infinity Ward did not give a crap about listening to the community. However, they never cease to amaze me with how bad this game was. The multiplayer isn't as broken as MW2, but that's like saying I'm not as bad as Osama Bin Laden. The campaign's story was horrible and was worse than MW2 (to be fair, I actually liked MW2's story). Survival mode was a terrible attempt at getting IW its own "Zombies." The spec ops missions were OK but not as spectacular as MW2. Anyway, with the less significant parts of the game taken care of, let's move on to the biggest and worst part of it: the multiplayer.

The "core" fanbase of the COD series was begging and begging for Infinity Ward to change the multiplayer system and actually innovate like Treyarch did with Black Ops. Deep down, most of them new that they probably wouldn't listen and just make COD's multiplayer a very expensive map pack with a marginally different interface. However, what very few of them were expecting was for Infinity Ward to actually be backwards and get rid of the many features that Treyarch put in Black Ops. For those of you who don't know Black Ops actually changed the level up system and you could get most of the equipment and base perks in the game if you just get enough "COD Points" which was essentially just virtual money. This made it possible for people who were new to the game to not be lagging behind everyone in a terrible way without having to put more experienced players at a disadvantage (in mw2 there were death streaks). What was Infinity Ward's response? Did they improve the system? Nope! They just threw the entire system out and went back to the old system of having to clock in countless hours to get that one class loadout you want to play with. On a more specific note, the improved scoreboard system that Black Ops had (which showed how many objectives players did) was thrown out in favor of MW2's scoreboard system, presumably because they don't like people who want to win instead of just kill people. The only positive thing MW3's multiplayer had in comparison to Black Ops was that you didn't get disconnected as often and the kill streak system has been improved.

Conclusion: Do not buy this game at full price. If you can borrow the game (from a friend or something) or rent it or buy it used, then you might be able to have a few hours of fun with the campaign and spec-ops.

Why are we even playing new games. Let's pay a monthly fee like in WoW and receive regular updates for next 10 years, ocasionally paying full price for big updates. That would at least not pretend to be a new game every time and suck as much money and even more time out of gamers. That is how we like our shooters, right? Why play something fun when you can get the same feeling from handing out headshots again and again, defeating all those noobs and prooving who's the man. Expand

Campaign is fun but forgettable. spec ops is fun but cheap. the Multiplayer is FAIL. **** maps. **** gameplay. gfx fail. sound design fail. just its a solid piece of **** well back to BF3 even though that game had a flakey campaign atleast the multiplayer of that one rocks.

I still cannot understand how people are actually dumb enough to buy the exact same game every year again. Even error messages of MW3 are talking about MW2, that's just a perfect example how much they changed. Graphics are dated, the story is a mess and gameplay hasn't changed or improved at all. Don't buy into the hype.

And then there's parts where you walk into a room and the game kicks into slow motion and you clear every enemy out of the room. That's very realilistic. And the edges of your screen turn bloody when you get shot. Wtf? Like that really happens. The unbelieveibly over the top action makes the whole campaign feel like a crappy michael bay film. And multiplayer is just the same as it has been. You can kill people with like 2 bullets. I mastered the game in about 5 minutes. Oh wait but there's new killstreaks. Oooooo. Let me start by saying this game is Infinity Wards Masterpiece Mw2 turned into an overused piece of dog poop. Maps are confined to such a space that the Developer decided that by making the player run slower they would feel the map is bigger. NO! It does not. The simple fact of seeing my character flapping his arm in a jogging motion as if running away from Godzilla, but only to find himself moving as though he had 100lbs weights straped to his leg is unreasonable, unlogical, and unnecessary. Why would you think that by trying to put a lot of buildings and corner on a small map would make it seem bigger? Your answer? NO! It does not again. The lighting on about half the maps are terrible, some of the lighting is the same through out most of the area. Same consistency, same shading/tint. What is wrong with that? Will, hmm... Let me see.. clearly everything. The graphics is also and issue. Minor downgrades of meshes, the texture to me also seem a bit dumb downed compared to Mw2. Now about the guns, what happen quick scoping? I understand some people feel this is an issue but why would you degrade a sniper rifle to the point where its unbearable to even have. To the point where the gun is practically useless? During my time online(Both PS3 and 360) I literally shot a player in the torso about 10ft away with a M107c a.k.a. the .50 cal(Damage on the gun stat clearly stats max damage) and the player turned around and shot me? I assure you this happened multiple times(Full 4 green bar). Do not get me wrong, I love the CoD franchise. I just hate what it has become.

Also to you SledgeHammer, yes directly to you and I hope you read this. I do not know how hard or how little you worked on making this game you call Modern Warfare 3, or the sacrifices made or if any made at all, BUT was clearly too much to put effort on your behalf? The engine was already there for you! You didn't have to build an engine from the ground up. You clearly had a Year to draft artwork for the maps, design layouts, make a campaign storyline and retexture some guns. With as many well-educated people as you have it shouldn't be that hard. I also notice models of objects from Mw3 that are/is similar/from Mw2. Mainly was It to hard for you to try At ALL with passion for games to put in the slightest amount of sweat and blood into this game? I guess not eh? I don't blame you. You, just like Activision, just wants to make a quick buck with the smallest amount of energy spent by milking the CoD name and franchise. I bet if you sell milk with Call of Duty on it you would get 12yrs old fanboys flocking from all over wanting it. Good luck with CoD:Mw4 or CoD:Iron Wolf. Heard one of those is coming out again next year in 2012 by November again. No surprise. Same engine, new guns, new map right? Charge 60$ for what should be a 14.95$ map pack. "Can't fix what ain't broken" right? It ain't broken so no point in bothering with it, right? Nope. It's Call IMPROVEMENT,PROGRESSION. Too bad those words aren't in yours or Activision's Dictionary.

The gaming industry is more and more ripping of consumers by simply re-skinning games instead of making new ones. When will devlopers actually develop new engines? Do we have to wait till the next generation of consoles?

How much work went into the making of MW3, in comparison to say COD4? MW3 uses the same map objects (such as the busses, the tanks) as seen in COD4. These objects exist in Activision library - map creation for them is simply a drag-and-drop. It's not creation.

The graphics, the gameplay, the engine... everything is the same. How much of MW3 is actually different or original? 20% perhaps?

I'm asking everyone on metacritic, for the sake of future game development, to score this game low & send a message to the gaming industy, LOUD & CLEAR that we WILL NOT ACCEPT re-hashed, re-skin products.

If you want to reap the profits, but in the work. Develop game play, develop the engine, improve the graphics... don't patronise your own customers by changing the maps and retailing the game at premium price.

Part of that may be my own issue, for having too high of expectations. Part of it may be the hype machine around the game. But I think a lot of it also has to do with the game itself. I buy COD for the multiplayer. I like the single player campaigns, I play them, I enjoy them, but I buy the game for the multiplayer. If the games did not have that component I would not buy them, except maybe in the cheap bins. That being said, the campaign in MW3 is fine... good even. And I had fun playing it. Where the game really falls flat, is in the multiplayer. Specifically, the maps. The maps that are included with the game are terrible, in my opinion. I have no stats to back this up, but in the previous COD games, it seems like the maps were well balanced between interiors and exteriors. I am willing to bet that 80% or more of MW3's maps are exterior/outdoor based. There are a million buildings on the maps... but virtually none of them are accessible. And those that are, are little one or two room structures. In the Wall Street map "Downturn," there is NOTHING beyond a small hallway on the second floor of one of the buildings. On a map that takes place among skyscrapers, you get one hallway on the second floor of one building. This issue is repeated over and over in the game, with many of the maps having buildings that are not accessible, or only accessible is so much as they provide a short hallway to get to the next area of the map. In addition, there are virtually no windows or vantage points on the maps to look out from. In addition, the George Lucas effect seemed to be working its magic on the developers. Virtually every inch of every map is cluttered with... stuff. Barrels, cars, debris, crates, and other random junk. The idea that less is more, was clearly NOT in their minds as they designed these locals. Finally, and in conclusion, the game and the maps for multiplayer seem designed for one style of play, that being "run and gun," which is fine and does not make it a bad game for everyone, but it does make it a bad game for me. The game and maps are not balanced to all types of FPS gamers, especially those like myself that like to take things a little slower and are more methodical. It is disappointing that they took a series that had been really well balanced and shifted it so heavily to one type of gamer. I won't say that I will never buy another COD game again, or anything as hyperbole as that. But I will definitely not blindly pre-order the next COD (and especially the next MW) game as I did with World at War, MW2, Black Ops and MW3. I will wait, maybe see if a friend gets it and try it out before committing to it. And maybe not having a COD game I like this year will give me time to try Battlefield. I did not see the point in buying it since I was getting MW3, but for only $28 to $30 around Thanksgiving, I am willing to give that a try and see if maybe that is a better game for me this year. The PS3 Warhawk, which came out in 2007, records tons of obscure statistics all game long and they are uploaded after the match, during intermission.

The maps are very bad. Too small, someone always behind you. Its no fun to do things right and get shot in the back anyway.

I was hoping for MW2 connection and hit detection, as that was Black Ops biggest problems. I was looking forward to a more balanced version of MW2 and what we got was a mix of MW2 and BLOPs. Heavy on the bad connection. So I am done with the COD franchise. You just lost a guy that purchased every Call of Duty game ever, every map / expansion pack ever. You can shove "Iron Wolf" up your ass Mr. K. I hope Activision goes out of business. Selling junk like this...you should be ashamed. The reason your Metacritic score is so low isn't suspicious. It's because your game sucks.

So what did they do ? Change as little as possible so people don't get scared off, but enough to keep people motivated to play. After Modern Warfare, with the release of Modern Warfare 2, i thought - Yeah that's as far as it should go - but along came Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2. And "nothing" has changed, and by nothing i mean nothing fundamental, because that, again, would be too much of a risk. If you played Call of Duty the last years, this episode won't give you any kicks, same old formula in the campaign, same old formula in the multiplayer, same old engine, and that's getting old. Battlefield 3 on the other hand, even through its flaws, seems much more refreshing and appealing. It doesn't bore me, because i haven't been playing Battlefield 3 for ages. But i have been playing Modern Warfare 3 for years now. No more. Expand

There is nothing to say about this game and that's the main problem I have, it's been 5 years since the fourth entry in the series made its way to the seventh generation of consoles, and nothing but a dated engine with the same gameplay mechanics that have been recycled over the years make up for a good game in 2011.

In conclusion, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is just another COD game that will have a one year life spam. All it's glory will be forgotten when the next entry will form part of the COD family, sadly this isn't good for gaming, and as a gamer myself I have to give what think this game deserves.

Look at COD 3, look at COD4.

Do the same thing with COD4 and MW3.

Compare the differences between both pairs of games. There is a HUGE AMOUNT of difference between cod3 and cod4, but barely any difference between cod4 and mw3. They have 4 games worth of changes and it still didn't amount to the huge amount of changes between cod3 and cod4. Do something like that, Infinity Ward, or Treyarch. This game is only good if you have never played any of the Call of Duty games before, otherwise IT IS THE SAME EXACT THING with about 6 changes. They even took buildings straight out of Call of Duty 4 instead of making new ones. It is an absolutely awful and cheap game that the developers probably spent about 1 week of their time on in the whole 2 years that they had to work on the game. The worst part about the game though, is the super crazy cod community who thinks that there is nothing better than cod, and they have no variety. It isn't just in video games either, these people are never trying anything new, they are the ones who complain about everyday things like food because they never try anything new. The worst part about these people is that they actually try to argue that this game is better than BF3. In some areas, yes, but overall BF3 is indefinitely and quite obviously the SUPERIOR game. I have played cod for a long time, but recently it has just been boring playing the same game over and over again, so I switched to Battlefield, and even BFBC2 is better than MW3. Don't waste your money, and don't pay attention to critic reviews, the good ones are all bought and paid for. This game is the same crud rehashed over and over again. I bet the developers didn't spend one week on this, maybe on the maps and re-skinning guns that they have probably had since MW2 but didn't put them in that because they decided they could make another game with it. Whether you like it or not, this game is going to get SUPER boring SUPER fast. I hope that this is the call of duty game where developers realize they can't be lazy, I hope the next cod game is as exciting as COD4, but... unfortunately, it probably won't. Hopefully this is the end of lazy work or the end of the Call of Duty series because as far as I'm concerned different people are getting credit for something done 4 years ago.

The most accurate way I can describe Modern Warfare 3 is "competent, but dull." The game tries very, very hard to be exciting, edgy, and shocking, but it fails on every level. The game tries very, very hard to be exciting, edgy, and shocking, but it fails on every level. While the set pieces are bombastic and loud, they carry no weight and have no emotional attachment to them, making them fall flat. What worsens this problem is that the game has absolutely no sense of pacing whatsoever. My playthrough took exactly 4 hours and 33 minutes and frankly the game would have greatly benefited from some slow moving filler to balance out the explosions. Good pacing requires valleys to go with the peaks, otherwise it all feels like one long, incredibly boring plain, which describes MW3 in a nutshell. There are no moments in the game that get ones blood pumping, no moments that evoke any particular emotion, and the script is bad on top of it. All of this is exasperated by the fact that the graphics and sound design are bad to the point of laughable. The gun models look barely better than some PS2 games, the explosions lack volume, the textures are muddy and low-res, the character models are just bad, no easy way to put it, and worst of all the sound design is compressed and unimpressive. I played on a 5.1 surround sound setup and while games like Killzone push the limits of graphical and audio fidelity and action in the genre, MW3 has felt content to go witht the absolute barest minimum of effort and it shows, and the game suffers because of it. The multiplayer offers no solace either. Simply put this is one of the shallowest, most vapid multiplayer games I have ever played. There is absolutely zero depth to the gameplay and no thought has been put into higher level play tactics, in fact, through its egregious killstreak system it actively discourages higher level techniques and play, and instead works to recreate the constant explosions of the single player game, and everything suffers because of it. Unavoidable deaths are a constant, both from getting hit by overhead killstreaks as soon as you spawn, and then from the laughably bad spawn system that often has players spawning in the middle of groups of enemies giving them free kills. Its broken to the point of worrisome. Did anybody actually play this tripe before release? All of this games depth has been put into the loadout system, which boils down to finding the most overpowered weapon and using that, negating any depth that could have arisen. Since there is no teamwork, no teammate reliance, and no interdependence the game is as shallow online as a teaspoon in death valley. The lack of distinct classes and good team modes really hurts the online's replayability and the hardcore gamer will find its lowering everything to the lowest common denominator nothing short of insulting. This is not a game for you if you like shooters. This is not a game for you if like new things. This is not a game for you if you like innovation. And this is certainly not a game for you if you like balance and good gameplay. This is also not the game for you if you're looking for good graphics, sound, and story. If you want any of those things I suggest getting a better game, like Killzone 3. I cannot recomment MW3 on any level, as if miserably fails on ALL OF THEM. However it gets +2 points on my review for at least working without glitches, bravo sledgehammer, your bugtesters are the most talented people on your staff. Expand

Another fault of the game is your inability to jump on anything but a car or dumpster in the wide open, there really is no room for sniping on any of the maps. I'm not sure if it's just me or anyone is feeling how slow the character runs even with "Extreme Conditioning" active- I find my thumb aching from pressing too hard as a habit to make him run faster, highly annoying. The single game seems to be interesting albeit the same dream it seems I had in MW2 where you get babied along the missions. I wish the game was faster, more creative, and had more interaction with your surrounding on multiplayer. It also seems too "cartoonish" like Black Ops, not realistic like MW2.
The Pros: You get to vote on which board to play next which is a cool concept on multiplayer, The Vault allows you to look at how you did on multiplayer gameplay. There are new games to play like Kill Confirmed that add a new dimension.

All of the sequels this year (Uncharted, Gears of War, Resistance, Killzone, Batman, Dark Souls, Skyrim, + MANY others) have at least attempted, and in most cases succeeded, in upping the quality of various aspects of their game.
What about MW3 then? Zero, nada, zilch! Same graphics engine, same physics, same poor lighting effects. This stuff was barely good-looking in 2009's MW2, let alone now where other games have caught up SO MUCH.
I don't play BF3, but cannot deny how amazing it looks. Uncharted 3 even refined its graphics over the previous one. Batman Arkham City made an environment that is so huge it will take you weeks to cover. MW3? Another 5 hour campaign with piss-poor visuals and same old gameplay.

And while it's fair to say that the CoD formula is what we should expect for each new instalment, I don't expect to find the SAME BUGS THAT WERE PRESENT IN 2007 FOR MW1!!! Seriously, 4 years and 4 CoD games with the same bugs, same AI issues, same graphics, same sounds. If the "CoD formula was PERFECT", then they could re-release the sahem thing. It's not!

This is on an overclocked quad core machine with a gtx460 card and running on FIOS.
Battlefield on the other hand is the opposite. They actually took the suggestons of the COD community and implemented them. Full browsing with ranked dedicated servers and up to 64 players in a game. The max I've been in was a 32 player game and lag wasn't there and none of the Console game host migration BS.
The graphics are also a big disappointment. They are once again the quality of XBOX and nowhere near what they should be on a higher end machine. Even the sounds are scrrewy. The guns are muffled like some liberal teacher made them, not wanting to expose people to the correct sounds of war. All I can say is give BF3 a try. There's a tangible insistence from gamers that this series needs to evolve, but it seems unwarranted when it still leads the FPS class.
