It's almost a wonder why you're reading this review, because put simply, you must play this game if you have not already, the ratings speak for themselves. After 52 hours of gameplay I've just completed the main story as well as at least 15 side quests, and I'm absolutely blown away and even saddened that the main story came to an end.

I personally had played the Witcher 1 and 2 so my view of the game may differ slightly to those who have not, for me there was a great deal of attachment to the characters having spent so many hours with them before, so this only increased my enjoyment of the game.

To begin with, the world is simply gorgeous. Whilst everyone else cried out about downgrades prior to release I still felt the game would look amazing, and it really does. On PC I have to admit the requirements are a bit steep and to truly experience the world you do have to spend a bit of money on your PC, but it's well worth it in the end. For spoilers sake I won't say anything about the main story other than the fact that it was epic, and takes you to all corners of the world (which is incredibly enormous). The balance of quests is perfect, and your experience with each main character is a pleasure. There's humor, darkness, surprise, and even sad moments in the game, it has it all.

In terms of the combat system I felt it's definitely the most polished to date in the series, which would make sense considering it's a new game. Witcher 2 had combat which in my eyes was too easy at times and you could spam the attack key endlessly to kill enemies. Witcher 3 has a really good balance with enemies. You can't just spam the attack key without eventually being knocked back, and blocked hits result in loss of durability, so you're forced to take strikes carefully. The leveling system also works extremely well and gives you a chance to shape the way you play as Geralt. Want to use potions a lot? Invest in alchemy. Want to be a sword master? Invest in sword skills, etc. I also felt a great sense of pride when killing boss enemies, especially through Witcher contracts. Bosses are challenging and often quite scary to confront. You spend time hunting them and it's good fun to prepare yourself for such a fight, and of course the rewards are awesome.

For me the one aspect of the game which amazed me most was the attention to detail. The game was just so polished, beyond anything I've ever played. An example would be a dungeon I entered mid way through the game where I killed a few bandits. I had to return there later in the game and found the very same bandit bodies on the floor, in the same positions, and with rotting flesh. It's a small thing, but it just makes you appreciate the impact you have in the world and how non-linear it is. The side quests are just as amazing too. For the first time in a game I feel like the side quests are just as good (if not sometimes better) than main quests. Thanks to the great voice acting you can become attached even to measly peasants asking for help, and every side quest has an interesting and unique little story to uncover with worthy rewards.

I hate to blab on too much else you'll get bored. All I can say is, play the game. Just do it. It's a wonderful achievement in modern RPG games and it'd take one heck of a game to reach the same scale as this one.

For those of you who haven't spent more than 15 minutes in a game from "The Witcher" franchise, this review is for you. I was just like you, until now.

The first question I want to ask is: Have you ever played a game that gave you such a unique feeling – no, such a wonderful feeling – the first time you played it, that you will never, EVER forget that feeling. And have you searched for that feeling ever since?

That is the exact feeling you get the first time you play The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. Within the first few minutes of the game, you know you're in for something great. I can honestly say that I had no idea who I was, or what was going on in the beginning, but you don't really need to. Gameplay mechanics and beauty are all you need in those first few minutes.

Which brings me to my first real topic: Graphics.
The graphics are astounding. When you hear people talk about, "defining next-gen," this is what they're saying. The first time I played the game, I said, "Yeah, the graphics are pretty good." I can say this: The longer the play, the more you start to appreciate the sheer beauty and detail of everything around you. You can literally feel the hours of work put into each and every detail on the screen.

    My next point is gameplay.
So you know when you play a game, and you come across a really cool mechanic, move, etc.., that you absolutely adore, but it's overpowered – so using it for long periods of time is almost always just too good to be true? Like, "Wow, this is really awesome, but I can only use it once every 10 minutes!" I know we've all had that experience. Well, The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt presents you with AWESOME elements of gameplay that just never disappear. Specifically? The Witcher senses to identify things in the world. Something so simple and wonderful, that in most games the developers would punish you for using it too often. But in The Witcher? Nah, dude. You can use that **** as often and for as long as you like, and it's GREAT.

My next point is the music.
Are you a fan of good music in a game? I know I definitely am. It means so much to me that it can, honestly, make or break a game for me. The music draws you in, gives you a sense of depth, or can you a literal part of the realm. Music that is just... off (for a lack of a better term), can straight up just drive your mood away. Nobody likes to play Skyrim with the Teletubbies theme song going on in the background. Nobody. The Witcher 3's music is beautiful composed and gives you the right sense for what's going in the story. It even helps me follow Geralt's personality, of which, I love.

My next point is story and "open-worldness."
Since 2011, when I talked about RPGs and open-world/sandboxy-type games, I spoke on Skyrim and pretty much Skyrim alone. The game was wonderful, can't argue that. But it did have some serious downfalls. Now, if you want to feel as amazing as you did in Skyrim, while fixing all the downfalls (most specifically, the stale-as-**** combat), buy The Witcher 3. The story is 100x deeper, to include the side quests (they definitely did not skimp out on these – they're wonderful), and the combat is intuitive, fast-paced and fun. Need I say more?

The last thing I'm going to touch on here are a little negative.
I originally bought the game for PS4. I got about 4 hours in, and couldn't shake the natural feeling of, "This should be played on PC." I've read the reviews for PS4/XBone, and yeah, the game is wonderful there as well. But I couldn't help to feel that they were just clunky. I had a difficult time navigating my character as fluidly as I liked, and some actions, such as getting on the horse, weren't as painless as I expected them to be. If you want to get the full effect of this game – gameplay, graphics, and all – buy it for PC. You will absolutely not be disappointed.

Lastly, this game was so good that it is literally the only game I have ever, or probably will ever, review.

CDPR made is happen. The Witcher 3 is raising the bar for the RPG Genre. The Storytelling is quite immersive and the Graphics (witch are extremely important to some folks) are so far the best i have ever seen in a RPG. I, for myself loved TW1 and TW2 as much as i liked the Books, so i think TW3 will give a nice ending to the Geralt-Saga.

The combat is realistic, you can dodge, roll and parry. The graphics are technically top notch. Beautiful painted world. Seamless loading times. Superb enemies. Fantastic gripping story. A flawless game, buy it. This game is truly a masterpiece. In terms of roleplaying. It is up there with timeless classics like Baldur's gate 2, Fallout 1 and 2, Planescape torment.

It was an unique experience and one of the main reasons was Geralt's relationship with his ward Cirilla.

This is a game meant for mature audiences. We need more stories with substantive family dynamics. Be it mother and her son, a father and his daughter. This is how you create emotional impact. Similarly the evil characters such as Crones were truly chilling. I have not seen anything quite like them

Visually the game is top notch, voice acting is brilliant and every side quest has unique elements. There are no fedex quests to speak of unless you count the treasure objectives but they are completely optional. I can not recommend this game enough for any person who loves a good story but you should definitely purchase the earlier Witcher games in order to enjoy it fully. Catching up will be difficult otherwise.

10/10 I am truly in awe my Polish friends. The sad thing is that there is only one way from here and that is downwards hah!

    1. It's been turned into an mmo (grinding and exponential power curve).
    2. Terrible controls. Geralt handles like a geriatric boat. I can't recall being so frustrated by my inability to get my character to do what I want in any game ever.
    3. Lackluster, or at least slow-to-start, story. I've been playing for maybe 20 hours, and so far I've pretty much just been running around and killing dudes with names that are synonyms for "thug" (Bandits, Renegades, Pirates, and Deserters that I can remember so far... despite having taking a moment to defend a deserter earlier in the game). It's clear there's something else going on, but I haven't been swept up into it like I did in the other two games. I'm chasing someone who, in cut scenes, is much more fun to play as than Geralt.

    Lesser problems include:
    1. a "gameplay" mechanic where Geralt scarfs food in combat, downing pounds and pounds of raw meat to stay in the fight. It's a little horrifying to imagine.
    2. a tedious mechanic were many monsters regenerate at insane rates. Rather than finding smart ways to shut down the regeneration, nope, you're just expected to gain a few levels and hack them apart faster.
    3. a tedious weapon/armor durability mechanic.
    4. I have a hard time saying why, but combat just feels frustrating, and not fun. I generally make a point of playing every game on a hard difficulty... but this time I fought a couple fights and decided that it just wasn't worth it. It's sufficiently annoying that I just want to plow through it and get on to the plot.

Sometimes just riding your horse through the countryside and listening to the gorgeous soundtrack can be a satisfying experience by itself. I'm about 50 hours in, and there's still so much more to go. There are three sets of awesome witcher gear you can craft (light, medium, heavy armor sets) and whichever you like the best you can keep upgrading it for four levels (base, enhanced, superior, master crafted) over the course of the game, so that's cool. Beware, your rig must have a pretty good graphics card and cpu to run this, or you will encounter slowdown, and even worse (such as in my case initially), the animations and the sound in the cut scenes will be way out of sync. This game actually prompted me to purchase a new GTX 960 just so I can see it properly. But wow, does the game look great. Trees blowing in the wind, the glare of the sun and billow of the sail as you sail your boat, the rippling water....people are making way too much of a fuss about the "graphics downgrade". It still looks great, and maybe it will get enhanced even more through mods in the future. There are possibly a few too many "follow the footprints" side quests, but there also a ton of really original quests and well written dialogue exchanges as well. I do wish that there were some "deeper" dungeons or ruins to explore, a bit more like Skyrim had, but the game is still a masterpiece RPG. And the in-game game of Gwent is pretty fun too. I've become obsessed with getting better Gwent cards... Expand

The hype was worth it, and more. A morally grey world with the best quests ever made in a game. It is officially the best video game I have ever played in my life. It will stick with me forever.

The best story I've ever seen in a game and it rivals even Lord of the Rings for books and movies. It has amazing graphics, and continues to impress as you crank it to 1600p and ultra everything.

The most innovative and intriguing thing about the game is that decisions you make matter (without a simple good/evil bar), and often you will not know the extent of your decisions for hours or even tens of hours (none of this "so and so will remember that" from Telltale games and none of the simple and obvious good/bad choices of almost every other game ever.

It also has fantastic setting and lore, which pays lots of fan service to Witcher 2 fans (like me) but is absolutely accessible to people who never played either other game (like my wife). Finally, it is just plain ridiculously fun and never got old even after 135 hours.

Yes, it is a bit clunky to control (but only out of combat), the swimming is atrociously bad, the inventory cannot be sorted, and some other minor issues as well. But when you absolutely nail every other part of your game, it just doesn't matter.

The Witcher 3 starts out perfect
You’re introduced to a massive would where massive creatures roam and make their claims on territories.
There’s a sense of fear and challenge in this aspect alone.
As you travel the land of white orchard you hear people call out for help and you stop to speak with them and help them with their problems for some coin.
Even the tiniest thing such as helping an old woman get her frying pan back feels immersive and draws you into the world.
This is where you’re introduced to the idea of oils and potions, finding enemies weaknesses, using your witcher senses to find clue about what youre about to face, and preparing for fights, something that comes in handy for harder difficulties.
I feel like this was the vision.
White Orchard would be what the witcher 3 was all about, and then the game kinda just falls apart and its vision fades.
The witcher tells a beautiful story of urgency, and for that reason alone, the side quests and question marks that clutter the map in velen and other locations make no sense to exist in the context of the games story.
Geralt needs to get to the bottom of what happened, why would he waste his time with the problems of randoms and destroying monster nests.
There are some great side quests that actually tie in to the story, and they are beautiful and fun quests but the ones there just to attempt and make the world feel alive ultimately feel like pointless grinding.
Many times I found myself just skipping through the cut scenes of these quests.
This could have been fixed with incentive more than coin, such as weapons and armors like treasure hunts offer.
The witcher contracts should have been mandatory obstacles in your way of story progression.
These type of things make sense in a Skyrim type game where you write your own story, but in the witcher 3, the story is already established... you aren’t an adventurer.
    You’re a rescuer.
But as a rescuer there is tons to do to level up so you can take on the challenges that await you.
Again contracts and sidequests could have used this idea for benefit, making them feel like training instead of just a job.
You can set out in the world to clear up abandoned sites to repopulate them, you can go out to take down beasts terrorizing territories or just go out and fight random creatures blocking your way to a new undiscovered location.
And the combat is satisfying, so fighting enemies never feels like a drag.
You can block, parry, roll, dodge, heavy attack, fast attack, shoot at them with arrows, use any of the magic signs to shoot fire from your fingers, use a protective spell, magic traps, knock enemies back, control their minds, so much opportunity and combos that can be played with.
And while defeating creatures doesn’t grant much xp, they are still worth the fight as enemies drop items for upgrades, crafting, and alchemy.
The crafting in this game really is some of the best I’ve seen.
You can dismantle objects for items you need to craft base items for main items, it may feel overwhelming at first, but once you really dive in, it’s clever and worthwhile to figure out.
You can purchase items from shops and alchemists or you can explore the beautiful world that The Witcher 3 offers.
When you do level up, you can use the skill points in a vast skill tree and choose the perks you want to use, with up to 12 free slots for these perks. This skill tree can be wrapped around your personal play style or the style you need to take down a specific enemy as there are potions to reset your perks so you can respend them.
I’m a very aggressive player so I for the most part focused on combat skills rather than alchemy or magic.
There are also races you can do, but your horse annoyingly gets caught up on nothing and will randomly just stop which can lead to frustration.
And now my favorite part of the game. Gwent.
Gwent is a mini game within the game and im not ashamed to say that I liked gwent more than witcher 3 itself.
Gwent is a very addictive game with massive marketing potential, so get to making the app CD Projekt red.
    Now for the bad,
for starters leveling up in the witcher 3 is a complete drag, not only does it feel unsatisfying to slay hordes of creatures, the games design actually discourages it.
If you dare level grind like you’re supposed to in an rpg rather than stick to the main story, you’re punished for it by earning 0xp if you’re 6 levels or more above the suggested level for that mission.
Not only does it discourage you from going on your own wild hunt, but it makes you look at side quests and blow them off, why waste your time and effort?
The game also has many stability issues
I lost count of the game crashes at 10, this was only in my first few days of playing the game, with and without game patches.
The Witcher 3 makes the mistake of not constantly saving when you stumble on new locations or accomplish something tiny like a gwent win, causing you to have to re-do 10-30 minutes if the game crashes, gwent cards being random for wins adds salt to the wounds, as if the game crashes after a win, you’ll more than likely not get that card again that you were so excited to win.
I also ran into head floating glitches that really just destroyed the world and its immersion, and there was absolutely no polish or attention to detail put into cut scenes where it should be most.
Sure I expect items to ghost through objects in game, but in cut scene, it’s unacceptable.
Not only are there game crashing bugs in this massive open world, but there are missables which is complete bs.
Making a 200 hour long game and putting content in there such as side quests and collectibles and making them missable if you don’t drop the world to do them now is massively disrespectful to players and their time.
At the very least put asterisk around missable quests so we know to prioritize them, so we don’t get lost in your story, heaven forbid…and have to replay a 200 hour game again to see content we feel robbed of, or better yet don’t make them missable at all, which leads me to achievements and more bs.
The witcher 3 is all about choices, that being said it’s shady as heck to put in achievements that force you to make certain decisions, really lessoning the games experience having to try to spin a web around a mid-game ding.
I know you don’t have to trophy hunt, , but that isn’t an excuse to disrespect a players experience by forcing those that do trophy hunt to play by your rules… that contradicts the entire premise of the witcher 3 as a game.
While I was massively impressed by my first 10 hours of the witcher 3, there are too many flaws in game design for me to overlook.
But that doesn’t take away from the fact that this is a gorgeous and intensely immerse game with thought provoking story telling, over 30 different endings you can get and hundreds of hours of content.
    For what it is.

As someone who is a fan of the previous games and also a graphics connoisseur with a powerful computer, I will attempt to give my true honest opinion on the good and bad points of this game for the PC platform.

First of all the much contested topic of the graphics. I play in 4K resolution with everything maxed except for Anti-aliasing and NVIDIA Hairworks, which are switched off.

    The good:

    - Character and NPC models along with clothing textures are the best I've ever seen in a PC game hands down, no contest. Even the best Skyrim mods don't come close.

    - Foliage detail/variety/amount and the physics of it is excellent.

    - The visual style generally, the amount of clutter and placement in the world and the way the cities are full of character is top notch.

    The bad:

    - Texture quality seems to vary to the point you actually get quite stark contrasts and it detracts from immersion. It's clear not every texture is to a quality we should expect for a PC game and this is especially apparent at 4K. I'm not saying they're all bad, but they definitely could have a done a better job here.

    - Particle effects are quite limited, with poor smoke effects and fire spells simply looking like sparks shooting out of Geralt's hands.

    - Poor looking "goopy" water with not much going on.

    - Lack of tessellation in some areas resulting in some flat looking textures.

    - No FOV slider! The games camera is irritatingly close to Geralt.

    - Seems poorly optimized in general, given that I hover on around 35-40FPS with an overclocked GTX 980 at 4K and anti-aliasing + hairworks turned off. GTA V has no such problem and is a smooth 60fps throughout, whilst managing to look better for the most part.

Graphics score: 6/10. It is clear that the downgrade is real and the fact CDPR tried to deny it for so long is also a bad point. It's by no means horrible, and most average people will be wondering WTF I'm on about here. But hardcore PC gamers with an eye for detail who have tried the best titles and modded games will be disappointed. There is much room for improvement in future patches and mods here.

    On to the gameplay...

    The good:

    - It's an open world version of the Witcher series, and it maintains the same gripping story as the first two games had. For non-Witcher fans, you could easily draw comparison to Game of Thrones here - and that's hardly a bad thing.

    - The side quests are worthwhile, varied and have proper stories to them. None of this "collect me 100 spider brains for no good reason" malarkey. And there are absolutely loads of them.

    - The world is seriously massive. I mean seriously, think GTAV and Skyrim put together massive. Not to mention there's plenty of stuff to explore. You will find it very, very difficult to get bored playing this game and even the card game is a time sink in itself.

    - The combat is fluid and easy to control in contrast with the previous games.

    The bad:

    - The game clearly wasn't designed for Keyboard & Mouse input. Movement feels clunky and awkward and will definitely take some getting used to, especially on the horse. Resolve by plugging in an Xbox controller.

    - While open-world, people expecting it to be Skyrim 2 will be disappointed. There's no extras such as player housing, interacting with NPC companions to the same level, marriage/adoption, joining a guild etc. This is to fit with the story of Geralt being a lone wolf slayer-for-hire and a nomad though, but as I said don't expect Skyrim - this isn't really a criticism just something to be aware of.

Gameplay score: 9/10. There is literally hundreds of hours of fun to be had here, and at the end of the day that's what games are about isn't it?

    Music/Voice acting/effects:

The Good: - Sound effects help to create a truly absorbing and realistic atmosphere. - The music can't be faulted either. - Every character has a voice-over, there must have been thousands of hours going in to the voice acting in this game alone. The main characters all sound great, obviously Geralt's gravelly voice is probably an acquired taste but I like it. Can I just say Charles Dance for Emperor Emhyr var Emreis was the best voice casting decision ever, for those who miss the presence of Tywin from GoT he's basically playing a very similar character here. The Bad: Nothing. Sound score: 10/10. In conclusion, if you love RPG's and love the Witcher series then get this game RIGHT NOW no questions asked. If you're not a fan of the previous games, or are expecting a Skyrim clone then you may be disappointed but I'd say give it a try anyway. If you're a finicky graphics connoisseur like myself then you may want to hold out purchasing until future patches and mods have made it look more like the old screenshots than it does now - that is if you have the patience. I don't. And now - back to playing!

An impressive game with a probably too many technical issues and design problems to really surpass The Witcher 2 as far as overall quality, especially from a gameplay standpoint. Still worth playing, but probably only if you are coming for the story, the combat and game systems here just aren't up to the task.

Starting off with the game's strong points:
The environment detail both in visual fidelity, effects, size and density is impressive to say the least.
The voice acting is generally top notch and there is quite a lot of it.
The side quests tend to be pretty compelling and avoid the usual traps of simplistic "fetch this" and "kill that" design.
The character skills and build options are a nice new addition, although arguably unnecessary due to the pretty shallow difficulty.
Enemy design and abilities can be interesting.

Unfortunately the core mechanics of the gameplay really let down the game overall:
Combat animations, timing, interrupts, collision detection and hit detection are all really loose and inaccurate, this is not a tightly wound combat system.
The controls in general aren't great moving around the environment, collision detection and button assignments and universally awful.
The horse is awful, it gets stuck, glitches, animates poorly and has horrible controls and collision detection. Combat on horse back is a total farce.
The loot system scales loot, but not enemy levels, so this leaves you with a very unrewarding loot system and gear progression that heavily favors crafting and leaves you with very little, or in fact no found gear that is really very compelling.
Enemies don't scale levels at all, so doing low level quests later in the game leaves all your foes falling in a single hit, on the other than it really just serves to limit you from taking on higher level quests at your discretion, for no particular reason.
Enemy AI is generally quite poor, they get stuck on objects, fail to be able to hit you when you stand next to them in certain positions, fail to move at all on occasion, attack and block at random intervals, regardless of difficulty.
Difficulty scales only enemy health and damage, not skills, timing, attack patters, dodging or aggressiveness.
It's a level based game, so having difficulty that only scales health and damage just level caps your questing, which actually makes the game less enjoyable.
Not to mention and inordinately long list of technical issues from crashing, animation issues, visual rendering issues and so on.

Most of these issues actually were not present in Witcher 2 and likely a bi product of being an open world adventure this time around. Here, you are clearly sacrificing the tight controls, combat and leveling structure for the sake of having an open world experience, albeit a very nice looking one. I feel as though the game would probably have been better served in a more linear format, as that wasn't a particular problem in the previous title, and the trade-offs here really undermine the game overall.

It's not a bad game, if they balanced some of the underlying leveling and loot systems by scaling enemies and not scaling gear, tighten up the controls, contact animations and collision detection it would really be a 9/10 or better game. In it's current state, you really are just playing this one for the story.

I would wait for the Enhanced Edition, much as you should have done for The Witcher 2. The hype train is real with this one, although the story is great and the visuals are compelling, there are so many mechanical pitfalls and technical problems here it really is a bummer.

7/10, Enchanced Edition, probably an easy 9/10.

I quickly realised why I hate button-mashing-over-the-shoulder-lack-of-control style games. Unfortunately I had hoped that at least this aspect of the control/combat would be improved for Witcher 3, sadly that's a big hairy 'NO'. In my opinion the controls in Witcher 3 are actually worse. Sadly this ruins the game for me.

The other thing that bothers me are the graphics. In my opinion Skyrim looks better, trees in particular look **** in W3, sort of reminds me of Arma 2 on medium settings.

Anyway I don't like being overly negative on a title like this which undoubtedly has had a lot of work put into it so perhaps if there is a1st person mod and a high res texture pack then I will re-install.

Having played both predecessors i had quite high expectations from the third (and last?) Witcher game. And the game started just right. Having played both predecessors i had quite high expectations from the third (and last?) Witcher game. And the game started just right. When you first launch Witcher 3 and hear the menu music, the song called "Geralt of Rivia" it simply blows you away - it's bombastic, doesn't fall short of epicness - it gets you right into the mood for an epic RPG adventure. Sadly, the level of enthusiasm you get from hearing this music for the first time will be also the highest you're going to reach playing Witcher 3. Everything that comes after clicking on New Game will be less bombastic, less genius than this great song (get the soundtrack guys).

First, i want to start by saying something about the games world. Its an open world and I'm sick and tired of it. Many claim that an open world offers gamers great freedom within the world. You can do literally anything, visit many places, find own adventures and explore at your will. But what if this world is somewhat empty, lacking of genuine and interesting content. No caves to explore, no crypts to unveil, no dark secrets to be found outside of the main quests. This open world then becomes a sandbox full of nothingness. Yes there are forests, lakes and seas with wildlife and to some degree some events in Witcher 3. But I missed something beyond that. something not so superficial. Maybe dangerous caves with dark monster that fit into the apocalyptic Witcher universe (succubus, more ghosts, cursed demons?). Sadly, in most games an open world does not offer such depth and Witcher 3 makes no difference.

Moreover, moving around in this world has its own problems.
The controls of Witcher 3 are "wonky". I don't know if they deliberately decided to make Geralt turn and react like a snail, but hey they did and i cant get into it. I know many people don't have this problem with W3 but for me, after having played many titles with perfectly precise and responsive controls (Dark Souls, Skyrim and especially Witcher 2) this is a really big problem. I'm getting killed so often on the lowest difficulty because i fail to adapt to Geralts slow reaction and the time it takes him to do anything. It also is annoying as hell and made me quit the game more often than i should quit a AAA title. Yes I quit Dark Souls quite often because of its difficulty. But when I quit Witcher, it's because of the heavy disappointment i get for not being able to defend myself from the enemies (or the games controls yeez).

Lastly, i dislike some of the changes the devs have made with the character and inventory system.
The new alchemy/potion system is, besides being completely useless because of food healing you way more than a swallow does, really uninteresting. I spent many hours in Witcher 1 farming herbs for the potions and then felt really good about being prepared, in Witcher 2 this was somewhat reduced but still very enjoyable. In Witcher 3 you craft something once, and then forget about it. You can literally craft anything during the first game chapter and then the alchemy system is done for besides from mixing mutagens, which is far less exciting then it may sound.
The skill progression, at first being very confusing, also does next to nothing to your character progression. There a some few skills such as reflecting arrows or regenerating health during daytime and stamina during night which are very useful but the rest is just minor improvements (5% to potion duration, 5% to damage, etc). Really boring. Compare this with the game changing skill system Witcher 1 where choosing a good skill-set was necessary to survive the game.

I believe Witcher 3 is a great game for most people. But being bound to a mostly boring world and rooted by bad controls I cant find greatness within. I cant see how this is an improvement over Witcher 2.
So sadly my final score is a 6/10 after having spent many many hours being mostly bored.

    - Great story and realistic dialogs with material to think-over, like in good book (not all this fantasy/sci-fi cliche bla bla bla of last titles of Bioware). I also like swearing in localisation (russian). More funny then offensive. Interesting memorable characters.
    - Sense of conflict in world, tension, where everything is complicated and your only choice -- lesser evel. Not crappy fairy-tale about good knights and bad big demon.
    - Good pace and balance between story + side quests around. Just in right proportion.
    - Big open world, great level disign. Nature is good and extreamly realistic. Villages and towns... oh! Novigrad - best fantasy town IN ALL GAME INDUSTRY IN ALL TIMES. Simply amazing.
    - Pretty weapon and amor disign. Some times just pleasure to made and see new items on Gerald. Eye-candy.
    - Integrated card-game. Simple, but enjoyble.

    Not so good:
    - Im not a fun of open world filled with markers "to visit" (more Assassin Creed way).
    - Rather agressive scaling of encounters by level, annoying after DS2 where you can kill anyone with just skill (or Skyrim - with... time).
    - Combat system is not ideal. Better then in Witcher 2, but still more or less mechanical (simple pattern - defence spell - strike - roll back wins 99% encounters with no use of brain). Skyrim-like healing, when you eat tonns of food during actual fight.
    - Clumsy inventory.

    So?

Must have and play for every RPG fan and veteran. Buy it, will worth every coin you spend during hours and hours of adventures : )

The points of interest and secondary wuests scattered around the world feel organic, and the people who give you the quests genuinely feel in need, and make you want to help them.

Of all the secondary objectives, Witcher contracts are by far my favorite. You track down the monster who you've been contracted to kill to find out what it is, so you can prepare yourself for the fight. The bestiary then gives you information on the monster and what is required to kill it, including it's weaknesses and how to make it vulnerable. Tracking and killing the monsters in this game is an incredibly rewarding experience, and by far my favorite thing to do in this game.

The world is obviously too big and quality of content is low, really the world is just huge forest copy-pastes all over the place, filled with low quality repeating tedious content, last time I checked it doesnt requires a lot of intelligence and creativity to do something this

repeat "destroy copy-pasted monster nests by pressing E on it for inconsequential amount of xp" ad nauseam

repeat "liberate copy-pasted villages from low level trash mobs so it can be repopulated with NPC who dont talk and with houses not worth visiting and with merchant who sell garbage for inconsequential amount of xp" ad nauseam

repeat "save the same copy-pasted NPC in the same copy-pasted bandit camp in the same way (by killing bandits) for inconsequential amount of xp" ad nauseam

repeat "pick worthless loot form chest guarded by group of trash mobs" ad nauseam

its just boring, and it gets boring really quickly

99% of NPC dont talk to you and 99% of houses are empty filled only with worthless loot and are not worth visiting, speaking about closed environments, dungeons can be explored in less then 5 minutes, and other environments like temples, fortresses, castles or ruins are almost non-existent, and if something like this appears in the game it can be explored in a few minutes, most of the world content is plain forest filled with copy-pasted villages and trash mobs

majority of loot in the game is worthless (usually items for crafting and alchemy and other garbage),

monsters even higher level monsters gives insignificant amount of xp and drops worthless loot so engaging in combat is unrewarding and sometimes makes net loss because you will have to spend money to repair your gear.

Enemy variety is low, you will have to fight zombies, drowners and humans most of the time

Constant surplus of money because there are almost nothing worth buying in shops. Camera movement in closed environments is atrocious, instantly moving from place to place often placing itself in areas from which are uncomfortable to watch. All places of interest are marked on the map and map is revealed from beginning so exploration is almost meaningless.

Dialogue options are shallow, because Geralt does most of the talking and his personality is fixed so you will have to choose only some lines, usually if important decision is involved, no more then 2 lines, other dialogue lines consists of asking for information, and other inconsequential stuff, so most of the time there is no choice in dialogues and you cant really immerse yourself into the role only to influence Geralt to be little more aggressive or nice

quests are designed poorly they all fallow the same boring pattern

acquire quest -> fallow markers and go to places A and B which are also marked on your map -> press E on every glowing object to win the quest,

everything is marked its very boring

the game even constantly tells you what to do in every stage of the quest. for example massage prompts ->go to a place -> now explore this area ->now talk to this person and so on

there is no satisfaction and brain work included in solving quests because Geralt tells about every clue, reads every note and book relevant to the quest and reveals what these clues might lead to, when you press E, for you

side quests are very short usually takes about 3-15 minutes to complete, areas and dungeons you visit to solve the quest are very small, linear and takes less then 5 minutes to explore, filled with few trash mobs and more or less worthless loot, so there are no huge maze like dungeons and underground fortresses filled with valuable loot, interesting enemies, encounters which requires smart decision making, items and people and so on

usually problems presented in quests are tied to separate individuals (for example, find something for a smith, kill monster for a farmer, ect.) and not tied to communities and settlements as a whole, so forget about epic "save the village whose inhabitants are shackled by fear, because evil witch from old times, somehow arise from its grave in deep forest and threatening their very existence" and something like that

they starts in the same fashion, that is you have to talk to NPC or read a note to acquire the quests, you cant for example run into quest, or find a clues somewhere in the world that doesnt instantly gives you quests and after some time find another clue and when going into some area and then knowing about the quests in that area from the clues you acquired, or quests that are not immediately unlocked but starts only when you advance or finish other quest and you have to make ends meet or something happened in first quests that affected the world or something like that

also quests dont interfere with each other and are not inter-connected they scattered around the world without any imagination waiting to be resolved

and they really are so tedious and monotonous and repeating you feel like trash man collecting sacks of garbage throughout the area

there are hundreds of quests in the witcher 3 but you can sort almost all of them into these 3 fallowing categories:

kill monster (acquire either through a contract or NPC)

find something (usually people) for other person find lost goods, which are few steps away from the area you acquired the quest and repeat these 3 again and again around the world, by going to marked place and pressing E to win this quests, ad nauseam and these quests are so shallow too as I said you almost never encounter anything interesting other than: go to a place - kill monster, go to a place - find something, go to a plce - acquire lost goods short, requires no brain work, small, easy, guided, isolated form each other like frozen pizzas in supermarket this is literally fast food of quests In my opinion older game like baldurs gate 2, fallout, might and magic, or diablo managed to do in one dungeon what the witcher 3 couldnt managed to do in an area needed about 40 hours to explore this game is not customizable enough and its mechanics are too simplistic for average RPG and combat is too clunky and not dynamic enough for average action game the world fails as huge battle arena as we seen in games like might and magic or diablo because combat is terrible you want to avoid most of the time, and there is simply not enough enemies in the world and it fails as interactive world with interesting content outside of combat like meeting interesting NPCs or interesting locations, or choosing from multiple solutions to resolve encounters like we seen in games like fallout and baldurs gate 2 because all areas of interest outside of combat are repeating monotonous tasks, content is repeating so exploration quickly wears off and become meaningless garbage recycling, collecting worthless loot which is also can be used only in combat and the game is not interactive enough (for example the only way you cant save prisoner from bandits camp is by killing bandits ) so I have every reason to believe this game is 4/10 that means being below average

And I have to say that I hate myself for it; and by "it" I mean that I ever doubted.

With 10h into the game, I merely broached its immense world and story. But I believe it's safe to say that the game is a-m-a-z-i-n-g. I feel like a fanboy now, I really do. But the game deserves the highest scores, despite its few flaws. I'll break down my initial feelings in points, listing the pros and cons.

    Pros:
+ graphics, world design, character design
+ atmosphere, created by graphics, musis and design - the locations are stunning, gorgeous and immersive
+ dynamic day cycle and weather
+ characters: scriptwriting and voice acting (Polish version)
    + world-creation (a very gritty, realistic, so to speak, war-torn medieval-fantasy universe)
+ plot! (and side quests, where even "go and fetch X" sort of quests are well interwoven with the game)
+ the fact that you actually feel that your decisions matter
+ the depth of the world, story (and the multitude of journal entries)
+ doesn't require extensive knowledge of the Witcher universe
    + optimisation
    + etc.

    Cons:
    - the game could've run smoother ;-)
    - exploration and picking ups objects (especially indoors) can be tedious
    - combat isn't particularly interesting (though, it's spectacular)
    - apparently some minor bugs (thankfully, I haven't encountered any)
    - gwent (although the game is interesting, I feel that it doesn't fit into the general feel of the game; and it's time-consuming, damn, Ciri can wait!)

But to be honest, this is just nitpicking. The game is stunning, and in my opinion is the best RPG ever. However, take my opinion with a grain of salt: my first RPG was Gothic 1 and ever since I feel that a TPP action RPG is the superior to the Baldur's Gate, party-based sort of RPG.

And please, stop reading this. Just grab the game and enjoy it!

PS: Don't care to read any reviews or opinions which give the game less than 7-8/10. They're written by haters and aren't time-worthy.

    Cheers!

Incredible graphics, fantastic sound, remarkable soundtrack and great story telling. The AI, however, can be easily exploited in sections and some side quests and even main quest have some real issues. Looting is frustrating until you get used to the incredibly narrow loot range and direction - was done to allow for looting in combat but it also makes looting a chore when not in combat. There are some glaring clipping issues and sound overlay problems but that is to be expected in a game that provides well over 100 hours of game play. Combat difficulty is extremely varied and its easy to out level the main quest content if you do a significant number of side quests so be cautious if you enjoy a challenge.

I recommend this game highly to anyone that enjoys RPGs, despite some of the nagging minor issues. This is a game that will stay with you for a long time and is a fitting closure to Geralt of Rivia's tale.

GRAPHICS: The graphics are spectacular but demanding on the PC. You do need to have a substantial rig to fully enjoy the graphical fidelity. On console the graphics are well executed and meet the "next gen" standard.

SOUND: Really well done ambient, combat and location sound effects that create a very compelling atmosphere. However there are some sound bugs where certain effects will linger and over power dialogue which is annoying and immersion breaking.

SOUNDTRACK: The soundtrack is phenomenal and very fitting to the setting, well implemented and strikes a chord at the right moments with excellent fading and transition some exceptions where, like the ambient sound effects, the music is overly loud and will interfere with dialogue delivery.

VOICE ACTING: Superb voice acting, with good dialogue and consistently well delivered lines. The NPC dialogues in areas could use a bit more variety perhaps as it can become monotonous and even irritating to hear certain dialogues over and over.

STORY: Excellent stories and very compelling, rich character development using multiple story telling devices including cut scenes, descriptions, items and game play. One of the best stories in gaming.

GAME PLAY: The combat is varied, from easy to difficult and is usually dependent on preparation and build but the AI can have issues at times. Otherwise the combat is fun and is adjustable to play style ranging from light armored dodging, fast attacks and signs to heavy armored tanking and the middle path of a little of both. The limitation on healing allows for tension and precision and can be challenging. Crafting is well implemented and can play a vital part in the game. Gwent, the mini card game is really quite fun but can be completely ignored if you don't enjoy it.

GAME DESIGN: Great level design and a vast open world to explore. Secret passages, caches, and unusual ruins compel the player to explore. The exploration is also well rewarded with great story telling and really well developed characters outside of the main quest. The quest design is some of the best since the Secret World and many developers should take note of the quest design in this game as it sets the bar very high for the genre and for games in general. Even after completing the main story the remaining quests, even the ones that are low level, are enticing just for the stories that they tell.

RECOMMENDATION: If you enjoy RPGs and well told stories this game is a must purchase.

Even with skipping the last type, you can easily spend 30+ hours in the game, which was the biggest pitfall of DAI. Story was over in about 15 and nothing else was worth doing.
The voice acting is top notch, level design is great, music is excellent, combat is a little basic.
However this being said, the game has a few problems:

The first half of the game is definitely better done than the second, more detailed, even at some points it feels dragging a bit but never too much, the second half feels a bit rushed, personal relationships with other characters (ex LI) take the backseat completely and entirely focused on Ciri. I missed the personal touch whereas you support Ciri but you need support as well from other characters and that never happens.

There are some occasional performance/stability problems that I am sure the devs will iron out

For first timers it will be quite hard to enjoy it full not knowing what happened in the previous episodes, so they will probably understand what they need to do but not too much why they are doing it

All in all I think this game takes the number one spot for a story driven fantasy RPG from DAO in my eyes.
Definitely worth buying, can only recommend it. If CD Projekt Red keeps this up they could become the new bioware which would be great. All they need to add on top of what they already have is to make it a bit more emotional throughout or just spread it a little bit more instead of bursts. More character interaction and they will get there.

The feeling I got when standing for the first time in the middle of a forest with a howling wind and raining falling sideways while all the leaves and the trees where moving in unison left me in awe... just stood there for several minutes contemplating the madness of it all.

Combat: Fantastic, it growths more and more complex and rewarding as you advance in the game and you assing skill points and alternative modes for your signs. Dodging, rolling, parring and riposte is everything I wanted for for Geralt and feels spot on everytime.

Music and sound FX: Probably the weakest point. If you linger in one area for an extended period of time music can turn repetetive. It has some great tunes but I wish it appeared more sparingly and not every 30 seconds. Voice dubs are excellent on the other hand and every main character feels super distinctive and with a defined personality, hell, even the common folk you encounter in a lost village have something to say for themselves.

General Aspects: I would like to highlight the general feel of the game. The world feels alive like in no other game before. I once stepped into a village where the chief needed help with a monster that was murdering people in the outskirts. When proceeding to kills such monster I was given the option to spare its life because it was sentient and claimed the killings were accidents that it could not control. I chose to believe it and set the monster free from its prison. I informed the chief the problem was dealt with and everything is OK right? Nope, some time later a step in the same village again only to find out the monster I had set free had killed every person and I found the mutilated bodies all over the village. Blood everywhere and no signs of a fair fight. I come back once again to the same village in the middle of nowhere only to find that it is now a festering ground full of ghouls and other necrophages... I could go on but this example is enough to point out the absurd amount of work and love that was put into this game. So much care for details, so much work in the quests you can opt to take. etc. Amazing.

Conclusion: A game for the ages. If you are still not convinced maybe Gwent will hehe (google it!).

Bottom line - Witcher 3 for the PC LOOKS like a console port, feels like a console port and sadly plays like a console port. In a word - I feel betrayed. Expand

Btw I tried probably any western rpg in existence, but story wise hollow open world games never could hold my interest for long. Prime example Skyrim...

So what the Witcher achieves is really outstanding and a milestone. Freedom of an open world, with a great story, believable world building, fun gameplay and fighting system. If you want to look for weaknesses you really have to look at small technicalities, which don't harm the game much. Like the imho somewhat clunky inventory system.

So yes this game is a 10. If a game ever deserved such a rating then it's surely the Wicher 3.

P.S.: Shame on all the negative troll reviews, which are often based on small bugs or design errors, which were already fixed after a week of release. People like that really harm Metacritic's accuracy when it comes to user reviews and nowadays offical magazine ratings are usually more accurate when it comes to modern games here. That used to be different only a few years ago...

The story is pretty simple at first, but it is strengthened by the side quests and the characters. For the most part even the less important characters are interesting and their facial animations are well done (even if the faces are repeated in a few places). The developers have managed to make almost every side story feel important and connected in some way to the main plot. Exploring the world is dangerous if you come unprepared, even on the easier difficulty settings, and there is usually always something going on around you. There are a lot of small details that can only be appreciated when examined closely, but help the world feel more alive than other games of the same genre. Regarding the graphics: while CDProjektRed does deserve some flak for over promising, they have done an excellent job making this game look beautiful. The highest setting look incredibly sharp and detailed, and the lowest settings are still very pleasing to the eye. The weather is well done, and the lighting for the day/night cycle provides some amazing backdrops. This is definitely the best game to come out so far this year, and the amount of content provided ensures that the fun will continue for a long, long time. Expand

I must be the only one who's noticing all the problems this game is hiding beneath it's admittedly gorgeous surface.

    - Geralt controls like crap. It's like steering a truck, when he's supposed to be cat-like.

    - The leveling system is immensely punishing and limited. You're supposed to stick to one tree to reap the most rewards until later on, but there's no way to know this as a new player, and by the time you figure it out you're in too deep to correct it without a hefty fee (1000 Orens to respec, which is a *lot* of money in this game)

    - Loot charts are all over the place... a level 4 quest will end with a cache that gives you level 7 equipment, and a level 14 quest will end with a quest that gives you level 6 equipment

    - This wouldn't be as much of a problem if you could just sell your things to vendors, but most of them are too broke to afford more than one equipment sale at a time (if you're lucky)

    - Just far too much garbage loot in general. It makes the crafting system immensely tedious. Do we really need 10 different kinds of food and 10 different kinds of drink, when the end result of each is the same? It just makes inventory navigation a bigger pain.

    - Inventory needs more filters. Oils and Potions should have their own tab, as should Letters, Notes and Books.

    - Crafting sheet needs organization. You have level 14 items being placed above level 4 items being placed above level 8 items. Doesn't sound that bad, but over the length of the game the hindrance of this really adds up.

    - Distribution of recipes for alchemy seems broken right now. You'll find enhanced and superior versions of some recipes long before you find the base recipes you need to take advantage of either (if you ever find them at all). This isn't as big of a deal on Easy, where you don't need any level of strategy to clear the game, but the higher you get in difficulties, the more important it becomes to keep up with gear and recipes, and since the distribution of both of these seems to be wild, it makes playing on anything above Normal with a build that isn't broken (like the current Adrenaline Points build) an exercise in futility.

    - Far, far, *far* too much time wasted traveling. Yes, the world is gorgeous, but sometimes I don't have the time to spend my time looking at things I've already seen. There's a fast travel system, but it's implemented incorrectly - instead of being able to select places you've already been from wherever you are and instantly travel there, you need to find a nearby sign, use it, and *then* you can fast travel to other places.

    - Main quest and some secondary quests are pretty interesting. However there is a *ridiculous* amount of "go kill" "go fetch" quests that are dressed up with VA to make it seem like something more than tedious padding that subscription MMOs utilize to drag out the leveling experience.

    - On that, leveling up in this is just way too slow, *especially* in the early levels. You'll be around level 30 when you beat the game, when you stretch that over 200 hours, it should be pretty easy to see why this is an abysmal rate.

    - Pacing overall just feels abysmal... you'll find a point of interest (most are not worth your time to check out in any way shape or form btw) that has enemies 3 levels beneath you (next to no XP) that are guarding a corpse that has a letter that starts a quest that leads you to a nearby treasure that gives you a bunch of underleveled loot... and then 50 feet in the other direction you'll find a Wyvern that's so powerful it just puts a skull next to its name and it one-shots you

I know a lot of people like to argue poor design decisions as challenging game design, but the only way any of this is intentional is laziness or an eagerness to rush an unfinished game to market. Wait for the Enhanced Edition.

As mentioned in many reviews, pc controls are clunky and unresponsive... atrocious in fact. Roach(dumb name for a horse) can't even consistently jump over small fences. Swimming is a gong show, I wont even go there. Then there's Witcher Vision, this is downright hilarious... the camera zooms in tight for some reason, so tight that Geralt blocks the entire screen you can't see the ground where clues need to be inspected wtf. You end jumbling around to highlight the 'inspect' icon for it to work. Combat is brutal, Geralt has a pocket full of magnets that glue him to the nearest enemy. In a typical scenario you always battle large groups, so when you line up a strike he will often swing in some other direction because another enemy has moved in closer. Yes there is a cheesy console targeting system, but it doesn't work well against groups. Button mashing seems to work, he will dance around automatically hitting everything in his way, lame.

So there it is, important elements are a blunder. If not for a somewhat interesting story, and Gwent, I would have tossed this in the bin already.

Simply put: the greatest open world RPG ever made. I don't ever recall a game where I was trying to avoid to the main story, just so I can soak in the lore, the quests, the Witcher's Path and the amazing Slavic story-telling. To me, the greatest achievement of this game is staying true to the original novels - forgive me, Poland, but CDred's games are canon.

And then this one comes, right after I finally got my copy of GTA V, for which I waited a lot. I installed Wild Hunt just to check it out, with intention for it to wait until I'm done with completing at least the plot in Rockstar's newest masterpiece. Yeah, right.

Witcher 3 is THE most immersive game I've ever played. You can find stuff to annoy you within this game, like a lot of people are trying to, but don't do that to yourself. Just sink in.

Every second spent in the world, whether it's just sightseeing, exploring question marks, completing wide range of quests or even playing Gwent is filled with extreme joy. World is beautiful (it has its charm even on low/medium settings), plot is interesting, music is incredible.

But the best thing about this game is that it makes you feel responsible for your actions and decisions. Whatever you do, it has meaning. This is extremely rare in video games sadly, and here it's really, REALLY well executed. I'm amazed.

Witcher 3 might have its flaws, but at the end of the day, all of those barely matter. We just got epic game, that all future RPG games will be evaluated by. Hats down to CDP Red!

Im ashamed to admit - the main quest development kept me up till 6 am one night. The best 70 (and counting) hours I spent in front of a computer.

Finished the main story line with some side quests in 70 hours (hardly done any contracts so I agree with 100 hours to complete the attempt estimate). The world is GIANT and packed with locations/events. I even enjoyed riding down the road on a horse as the landscapes are beautiful and even a longer ride doesnt require any patience as the road never looks repetitive. The game doesnt make you seek shortcuts or run over mountains on your horse (hello Skyrim) because roads are just so much more fun to travel.

What really makes the game: the characters - every single character is wonderfully acted with a great depth to the personality. The conversations are fun and interesting and your decisions make a lot of difference - a simple dialogue choice at the beginning of a conversation may defer the talk and escalate to the point where you kill the character that could have otherwise been committed to later help you in need. In fact, I used checkpoint saves to try again some dialogues that didnt go as I planned.

I have to make this distinction: the main character is fabulous. Some games offer the absent hero - no personality, no voice, hidden under armor (Skyrim), others put a little more effort (DA: inquisition) but Geralt has it all - the game gives you a solid feel of the personality - that comes at the expense of modelling the looks and using weaponry - you cant make a shield wielding summoner archer but you have a complete hero served from the start.

The main story sends you all over the world and while you explore you trigger countless large secondary quests, shorter side quests, treasure hunts and monster contracts. Though, I was under impression that committing to the side quests and exploration I outleveled the main story line. Having that said, I recommend the highest difficulty level (I did one below the highest) if you dont want to finish the final boss first attempt.

PC version NEVER crashed. I noticed a few fresh out of release minor bugs (v 1.01 - 1.04) (one upgrade stone had 0 effect, I had music go overly dramatic despite the short fight quickly finished and one NPC blacksmith had trouble spawning - needed me to go away behind a wall and return to be able to speak to him). It was wonderfully smooth at all times no matter the number of units and lightwork.

Crafting and alchemy are done exceptionally well - there is a solution to the problem of the inventory filled with hundreds of potions thet you will never use (hello Bethesda). Here you have a selection of potions, each with limitted quantity and restocked for every battle. While you maintain a great number of ingredients and craft materials, they dont require your attention for cataloguing and depositing - they just sit in your inventory should you need them and they can be reworked - need more silver ingot? make one from the ore or destroy a silver item.

Fighting was fantastic - a lot of tactical choices, no one-tactic-fits-all, well scaled development. It feels like the strength of the hero grows hand to hand with increasing players skill and both are equally meaningful. Never really found myself using the aiming - having 1 second before an axe slashes me there is no way I can aim a bomb or crossbow but why would I if it can be done at the selected target automatically? There is something conceptually missing with the aiming mechanics.

First and most important, loot everything. In this game you can pretty much breakdown anything into materials which are all useful for different things. The hardest thing to determine with your inventory is, what can you sell and what should you keep. You'll want to mix a good amount of items that will be sold for money and what should be kept. You can figure this out simply by knowing what kind of build you want. This game offers some interesting customization for different builds. There's light armor and fast attacks with conventional weapons, medium armor mixing fast and strong attacks or heavy armor and heavy weapons. Signs and potions can be added to any type of build. Although I highly recommend picking two things and going with that. Don't distribute your points so widely when first starting out in the game. The game gets very difficult all on it's own, a bad build will only make that worse. Every build (unless you're trying to challenge yourself) will use weapons and physical attacks. Build up attack damage either max out fast attacks or strong attacks, pick what kind of armor you want and upgrade the armor skill ability then around level 6 you can branch to either Signs or potions while continuing to add to weapon damage.

Once you figure that out you'll have a good idea of what items you can sell. I don't use potions so much so I sell a lot of the ingredients. Although it's a good idea to have the basic potions. Search everywhere, if you're walking or riding you should be holding that instinct button nearly the entire time. It's very easy to miss things, that hallway which branches off you're thinking about skipping will have something good in it... I can promise you it will. I found easily the best early weapon in a game by going down a dead end branching path during the Magic Lamp mission.

Points of Power are places that will buff your Signs but the first time you activate them you'll get a skill point. Explore as much as you can so you can find these places, rarely should you take a main trail. Always go off the beaten path. Never run into a fight without being prepared, save often (duh) and read all the books/notes you find. The lore in this game is not only interesting but it will add important back stories to certain things you encounter. You may find some knowledge within a book that will help you kill certain enemies faster. Try to avoid buying weapons and gear, you can easily find better stuff for free by doing some searching. Keep the money for important rare items you'll need to either craft weapons/armors. It's easy to not get that super rare drop of that important material you need, so shops can help there. The best weapons and armor will come from treasure hunts and crafting. So avoid buying their extremely overpriced mediocre gear.

Explore all dialog options and don't always go with the first option you get. Without spoilers I'll just try to explain, if there's somewhere you need to go and there's a thing you need to get there, it's possible to get a few different options on how to acquire it, don't always go to the easiest option. You may come across a situation that you can either end now and be over with it and your quest will be completed, or if you're willing to do a few extra missions to come to a better conclusion you may end up being awarded something you'd terribly miss out on by rushing it. Terribly... miss.... okay you get the point.

Combat is very reliant on quick movements. Even with heavy armor and a protection spell you aren't going to be able to mash the attack button while being hit. Rolling and dodging are very very important to staying alive. Figuring out an enemy's attacks can be a bit difficult because the combat AI in this game is very intricate. So make sure you learn when the best time to roll is and when the best time to attack, it's easy to miss your opportunity on an attack. Parrying is also a great defensive and offensive move but you can't parry certain types of enemies, rolling always works but rolling can also make you miss a perfectly good opening to hit.

I personally recommend building Signs over potions, but that's just me. After seeing what Quen can do when it's leveled up all the way is just OP. It protects you from attacks of course but it can also heal you, knock down enemies by exploding when it breaks, return damage to an enemy and takes multiple hits to break... and that's just one Sign.

There's my review... go buy it.

In regards to the story, which is the most important part of any story driven rpg, I should note that the significant accomplishment here isn't the amazing main quest storyline (which is amazing) but rather the quality of the side quests. Until now -every single- open world game (I'm looking at you TES, DAI) suffers from boring, unscripted, often dialog-less side quests ranging from "go kill this" to "go fetch that". In Witcher3 practically every single side quest I have encountered, and make no mistake there are a LOT of them, has not only had scripted dialog but often has fully fleshed out stories filled with plot twists and interesting characters. This is contrasted with the latest Dragon Age game in which pretty much every side quest was a piece of paper you read off the ground that directs you to go loot a chest or kill something, without even a word of dialog. How the devs managed such detail is beyond me, it's an absolutely outstanding accomplishment.

The graphics were "downgraded" for consoles a little bit, sure, but the game still is the best looking rpg I have ever played, and I found the framerate to be optimized very well, which is something people often overlook. I can run everything on Ultra (except Hairworks) with my old 7970 and maintain >50 fps. I just don't get the 100 negative reviews on here. No other open world game even comes CLOSE to Witcher 3. Looking through those reviews these morons are giving the game 1/10 because they don't like the controls (which are fine), or they claim the graphics are not "great", even though no other open world game comes close in this regard. The only things that hinder the game are the inevitable glitches of an open world game, and minor issues. Interacting with the environment objects when trying to loot, Roach not wanting to go over bridges, and difficulty looting because your not in the exact right spot. The quest have not devolved into "Collect 5 of these" like Inquisiton somewhat did. Many complained about Inquisiton that the opening area was large, and all subsequent areas varied from slightly smaller to much smaller. Witcher 3 does the opposite. The opening area is relatively small. My first thought was, " Oh **** Im going to blow through this in a week if it's this small. Then as soon as I finished the starting area I realized how immense the world was, and how filled it was with things to do. Every quest has character and importance to the local populace. I can go on for hours. Or at least an hour or two. The simplest way to put it is that this is the greatest Role Playing Game created to date. A must play for anyone who enjoys RPG's. It sets a whole new standard in terms of content.
If it weren't for the controls not being good for kb+mouse it'd get a straight 10/10

    Original:
Let's get straight to the point: the controls are just outright bad. I don't mean unpolished, I mean bad, as in: wtf?
Your typical day in the world of Witcher 3 has you maneuver through beautiful landscapes and towns that have lots of obstacles that are hard to evade because the controls are just unresponsive and just not fit for this level design.
Every movement appears to have some 200ms delay and it just feels butchery.

For instance, you see a chest inside a broken hut at a lake which is behind a beam. Now approach it several times until you finally get the E to open it just for it to vanish the next second you you can't anymore. Then you spend quite a few attempts running against that beam from different angles to actually get to it.

Then we come to combat - could be that I'm just bad but it feels a bit like they took the worst from Assassins Creed and Mount and Blade, combined it, and then didn't know what they actually wanted to do.
Fighting against a single opponent - which never happens - is easy, you can riposte the attack or block it, then strike back. Since you always fight multiple opponents though this just doesn't work because... I'm still not sure, but blocking just doesn't work.
What works best for me right now is jumping left and right, then bashing LMB to strike. That's no fun to play though.

Mounted combat is just atrocious but so OP that it's sorta worth it. Now the genius thing they did was adding a horse fear bar so you can't just walk up to something, bash it, and it dies - your horse doesn't like that so you have to charge, and then hitting something is really hard.

Town life is just really dull, mainly because of the system they use where they spawn X amount of townsfolk based on your settings. At least there could be some funny standard lines like in TES 3-5 that are memorable, making townsfolk more believable.
In this case they're just zombies.

    Now to the positive part:
The game feels immersive, the graphics are great, I like the crafting system, the characters, the card mini game, all that is great and I want to play more, run around the map doing sidequests, typical RPG stuff.

    Bottom line
I like it and I'm willing to try to get better with combat and what not but it just makes no sense to me how they could think that this was a good combat system.

I hope they'll pump out a patch making KB+Mouse controls more responsive, rumor has it that with a controller it works well. Still, my colleague reported that he had the same problem with that beam at that hut.

This is the best open world RPG I have ever played. And I have played them all. Best Open world RPG for Next Gen consoles by far. Story line is very in depth and interchanging. The decisions you make really do matter. Graphics are very realistic and changes in weather and time of day really deepen the experience. Loot system is great and always finding new locations and side quests keeps me hunting for more.

Graphics, atmosphere, sound is second to none, the attention to detail is amazing. And the game runs well and is stable: I struggle to remember coming across any bugs.

I would like to give a shout out to the writers and translators. I don't think I've vocally chuckled or thought that's impressive forshadowing, symbolism, clever writing ect so many times in a game.

I'd also like to thank the animators for making human and animal movement soooo very good. For the first time in any game I can remember, character's faces actually express emotion correctly and consistantly!

The open world is crude, you got no sidequests in the wild related to the main quest. Doesn t loose a point because its their first open world, but it was so hyped its sad. ,5 point lost, its a waste of space.

The last loss is for dialogues... yes and no basicly, not much choices... and when you do some replay you see that many of your choices are in reality yes or yes or no or no...no choice at all, just make up. Losse 0, 5 point for this cheap shot.

In the end The Witcher 3 is a case of game that is more interesting to see someone play than to play it yourself .
Mainly because of the controls....sad sad....

The world building that takes place in a game like TW3 is unlike any I've ever experienced. There so much to do, so much life in the villages and people, surrounded by just as much death. It's an open-world RPG, but with an important twist. The entire game isn't open to you from the start, and you'll thank CDPR for that. Each map is tied to the major events going on in the story and you progress through them as you see fit. It's a true choose your own adventure and each choice has a consequence, whether it be at the end of your conversation, or much further down the road. Speaking of story - TW3 has a fantastic one that will hold your attention and drive you to keep playing to see what happens to this world and its people.

Visually, it's unlike any game I've ever played. Sure there are some similarities if you try to compare it to games like Dragon Age and The Elder Scrolls, but the world of Temeria is rendered like a moving painting. I find myself taking screenshots of nothing but the landscape from time to time because it's just so absurdly gorgeous. Animations are great, especially in the faces. Conversations with NPCs really show off the details. "Graphical downgrade" debacle be damned - this is a fantastic looking game on an PC that can handle it.

Combat is improved from the Witcher 2 but won't suit everyone's taste. It's easy to pick up, but difficult to master. Timing is everything and preparation is important. Knowing what you're going to be up against and how to kill it is key to being a successful witcher.

CDPR has already put out two major patches for the game, and we're just now a week into its release. With the promise of mods coming soon, the constant updates, and the weekly free DLC, it's only going to get better from here.

There's a lot to love about this game, and I could go on for a very long time. But I'll let the review speak for itself and just say I highly recommend everyone give this game a try.

RPGs are typically divided between two areas - Questing and exploration. Just like its predecessors, questing is the Witcher 3's strong-suit. Every quest in the game has a story worth experiencing - and they are stories that you have some level of control over. A seemingly minor decision can have huge consequences, and it's those consequences coupled with the moral ambiguity that the Witcher is known for that makes questing a joy; they also add to the games replayability. Exploration is interesting as well, and is often necessary as the loot that you can acquire is crucial to keeping an edge on your enemies.

The combat in the Witcher 3 is strong as well. Animations are fluid, landing hits is satisfying, and the game does a good job of giving the player several ways to approach combat, which further adds to the games replayability.

The Witcher 3 does have a handful of minor issues though. My game has crashed 5 times so far and I don't seem to be the only one affected by this. The games' stability could certainly be improved. I've also experienced some minor texture pop-ins in cut-scenes that can be quite distracting (Both of these issues could just be my computer but, like I mentioned, I don't seem to be the only one complaining about it and I took the time to optimize the game to fit my computers hardware so the problem is likely not on my end). Lastly, the game suffers from consoleitis - an infection that has plagued many PC games recently. The game lacks some basic customization options (being an FOV slider and the fact that some keys cannot be remapped) and I actually find the game to be more comfortable on my Xbox One controller than on a mouse and keyboard. Another console-related issue is the fact that there was a graphics downgrade so that the consoles could keep up. I have no qualms with the graphics though - the game looks beautiful and I'm able to maintain 60 fps and sometimes higher on a $700 PC. The game is very well optimized.

Verdict: If you like RPGs, then you''ll love the Witcher 3. Buy it if you're on the fence. Definitely a GOTY contender.

I have been a gamer for nearly 30 years, and every now and then a game company comes along and breaks with the trends of the day and delivers something innovative, something fresh, and something special. Witcher 3 is that type of trend breaking game. CDPR set out to break a few ideals with the whole monetized gaming trend and I for one am very thankful they did just that with their game. But Witcher 3 houses something different, that at first I was frustrated with, but as my time within the game grew, I started to realize exactly what I was experiencing.
There are two schools of thought on providing players with a sense of choice and freedom within a game story system. Mass Effect, where the player is not aware of the choices long term impacts, yet has the freedom to return and correct their choices, or the Walking Dead style of choice where the player is granted knowledge of the choices they are about to make and thus can make a choice with some level of long term awareness. In both cases the sense of accountability and ownership of the choice is lost with the player, and thus, the choice losses its sense of purpose, or meaning, which hurts the story and the players experience within the game.
Witcher 3 just changed player choice entirely. Here I became immediately annoyed at the sheer amount of choices from big to small, I was constantly having to make choices as to quests, side quests, main stories, exploration, how to handle a random encounter with bandits, and I was forced to give up trying to even track or pay attention to them all. It just becomes impossible, but in this annoyance I found peace, and a whole new immersive experience. Rather than trying to track my choices so I could attempt to know how my choices would work out later, I just gave up, and let the game work its magic on me. Now I was making choices out of my own feelings, emotions, and mood. If I hated a character I was dealing with, I might react too quickly or aggressively, or if I liked the character I might grant them their life, or let them keep their gold.
But I was not prepared for the first full realization of my choices until much later when faced with a harsh situation, and my choices ended up costing someone their life. I will not spoil that moment for anyone, but trust me when Gerald ended up flashing back to important moments in my past choices, I realized just how responsible I was for that death. Now the magic here is I wanted to save this person but I could not even if I wanted to, see although I had made important choices are important moments, it really was the smaller choices in between those important moments that shaped the long term out come. I would have had to literally start my game over to have any hope of ensuring different choices for a possible different outcome. The choices are so numerous it caused me to feel ownership and be accountable for my choices, much in the same way we do in real life.
That moment in Witcher 3 made me realize that CDPR have changed the industry and set a new high standard for player choice in games. Choices that should make the player aware of potential long term impacts were clear just as they would be in real life. The difference is that you had no idea how they would later impact the other multiple story lines within the game. Each having multiple further impacts, all building or taking away from long term changes. It was impossible to track, or understand how a moment earlier could potentially impact something long term later, and this was special.
As a player I was now fully aware that how I reacted to even the smallest of situations had purpose, had depth, and was important to the world I was playing within Witcher 3. People felt alive, and reacted as such. For the first time in a video game I felt ownership for my choices, and I felt grief and sadness for what I had caused, even though I didn't know it until it was to late. For this reason, I have found myself excited about CDPR and Witcher 3.
The game is beautiful on so many levels outside of just graphics, and honestly graphics should not be the purpose behind why a game succeeds or fails. Game play, story, immersion, and entertainment are all the right reasons to support a game. The ability for the story to be told on multiple levels, and through the use of player interaction with a world that is alive and fully aware of the player in that world, matters. You will find yourself wanting to know more about the smallest of side quests, and each one has its own story that you will care to learn and explore. Witcher 3 is a special game, many are not even aware of that fact yet, but they will soon enough.

The same issues are present in the HUD as many things are just simply "too small" 2) the running > walking animation is super clumsy and results in me standing on top of things I want to loot often.

That being said, these are 2 minor complaints in a STELLAR game. A must buy for all open world fans. Who needs multiplayer when there are over 200+ of interesting story based quests and objectives?

Story is great, there are many characters, the dialogues are perfect. Many choices that affect the future of story. I will definitely play it again when i'll have more time and better PC.

Basically, it's a must-buy game, however before you get it, make sure you have a pad, like x360 one, the game is worth it.

Also if you're a hardcore player make sure you play on hardest difficulty - i started the game on second to hardest difficulty [only because of terrible ~30 fps rate] and it was like - the beginning of the game was quite like dark souls but eventually my character was overpowered beginning at around second half of the game, and 3shotting stuff and just yoloing some bossess isnt fun.

    Now, time for cons,
    - I really dont like the fact that once the fight starts it's hard to run away
-You cant jump during a fight, and it seemed like a good option in some situations
    - in fights with multiple enemies it felt alot better to not 'sticky target' the enemy. In DS2 it felt alot better.

So the cons are pretty much all about the combat system, and it probably could be better.

Still, the overall experience definitely outweights the cons.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If someone is wondering whether they should get the game or not, the answer is definitely yes! The game does so much right. By no means is it perfect but seeing as this really is the new milestone for rpg's, I couldn't justify giving this game any less than a 10. Strictly speaking, I would give the game at its current state a 9.5, but we'll round it up.

    Pros:
+ Gorgeous, MASSIVE world. It just is so beautiful and masterfully crafted. No matter where you go, you can always find something interesting. The landscapes are phenomenal and immersive. The world is also full of interesting monsters and other npc's.
+ Story and storytelling. You've probably heard that this time around the story is a personal one. And that is completely true. It really grips you and makes you feel for the characters and want to see what's going to happen next.
+ Characters. Probably the biggest thing that sets this game apart from all the other RPG's. The characters are so well done. They all have interesting, genuine personalities and the voice acting is just perfect. The dialogues feel so real and you can really see, and feel, what the characters are feeling.
+ Decision making is the best that any RPG has seen. Not only can you see the effects of your decisions in the world, there isn't always a clear line of right or wrong. You don't usually get judged right away for your decisions and you can't always know the consequences beforehand.
+ Side quests are FINALLY worthwhile. In fact, some side quests even feel like a part of the main quest. In some ways they are, since they do affect the main quest. But all the characters, lore and dialogues make you immersed in the game like no other and there's quite a bit of variety in the quests.
+ Soundtrack. Not much to be said here, the soundtrack just is extremely fitting and at times beautiful.
+ Graphics. Yes, you read right. Despite all the downgrade fuss, the graphics are phenomenal. Sure, a slight downgrade has happened, but after some patches that improve the graphics a bit, I can not honestly see how someone would say that the graphics are not good.
+ Tons of interesting loot to be found everywhere.
    + 16 free dlc's (tho minor ones).
    + Fast patches.

Since I'm not big on crafting stuff, I'm just going to say that alchemy and crafting has been made well and I found no issues with them.

    Cons:
    - Combat is a bit unresponsive and floaty. The problem could be with the controls, which by the way are a bit sloppy too, but I think they should have made the combat more like in Bloodborne. It's just so smooth and rewarding and you can really feel the hit of your blows in that game. Now don't get me wrong, the combat is not bad at all, it's good in fact, but I feel like there's improvements to be made.
    - Lack of spells/character development. The skill system is pretty good, but it lacks depth. It feels too restrictive. There should be more variations to the signs, more interesting skills (many skills are just passive buffs to your abilities) and quite frankly, you should be able to select more skills on your active skills bars.
    - Bugs. No surprises here. In a game this huge, there was bound to be bugs. Luckily, there aren't too many and they aren't game-breaking, or even too distracting.
    - Short viewing distance. The world and graphics are beautiful and the landscapes as well, but unfortunately the landscape gets blurred and foggy too fast.
    *MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD*
    - Honestly, this is the thing that bugs me the most. After beating the game, the game reverts back to before playing the final chapter and the main quest vanishes. This means that all the things you do during the final chapter won't have any effect on the world at all. What's more, almost all the main characters disappear from the world. Needless to say, this is SO immersion breaking. What were the devs thinking? The game is otherwise so well done and then they just pull you out of the immersion and make the world feel so hollow.
    *SPOILERS END*

    Conclusion:
All in all the pros really outweigh the cons. As for the last con, I'm really hoping that the devs release a patch or dlc SOON that will fix this problem. It seems likely, since others have complained about it too. Despite that, all I can say is: BUY THE GAME and support the awesome devs for making this game and respecting us gamers. You won't regret it.

The graphics are beautiful and the gameplay is simply out of this world. I never believed fast battles could be so fun with a keyboard and mouse and that was one of the things I hated about The Witcher 2. This game however, perfected the battle in such a way that it is just fun fun fun. Well, I play on hard and it does take some planning and careful use of oil and signs but as long as you are aware of what you do, you could get away pretty much scratch free. Simply put, you're in charge of putting down monsters the way you want to.

To add to the beautiful world, the progression system is also very unique. I have fun customising Geralt the way I prefer to play and it there hasn't been any points spent that I regret so far. Equipment is also fun and there's never a must have sword or a clear upgrade. You might stick with a lower damage sword because of the crit chance, or you might prefer to go all out on raw damage. Your witcher, your choice.

Well, I just about forgot about the side games. You can play if you want or just skip it. It's fun though. Seriously speaking, Gwent could be released as a standalone casual card game and it would do very very well.

Overall, I salute CDProjektRed for making such a wonderful cross platform game. PC gamers always fear consolitis which ruins some good games. This game, does not suffer in that regard. It's clear that CD Projekt Red optimise their games properly and actually tested it extensively on PC using mouse and keyboard. I can't say about consoles but from the amount of polish I've seen, I believe that it would be a great experience regardless of your platform of choice.

It's Story, characters, dialogue, quest/world/creature design are second to none of this genre. The world design can only be described as the most immersive, belieavable ecosystem ever crafted in any video game with an art style and atmosphere that perfectly captures architecture of mid european cities/village communities of it's historical time. Graphics, voice acting and music are of the highest quality. Gameplay is vastly improved from previous title...it is still not as responsive as Bloodborne or has the same quality of animations such Arkham series, however it more than makes up for it with an amazing variety of creatures and different types of AI, preparation through alchemy, learning your foes' weaknesses through extensive bestiary, use of magic signs that you can also use on your environment to give you advantage, as well as other tools at your disposal such as bombs, crossbow etc.
It is not without rough spots though...such as UI( Inventory system), AI ( horse riding), controls and camera as well as suffering from no small number of bugs/glitches. Honestly, until CDPR takes care of these things, I would give it a 9...however I'm rating it a bit higher to negate childish stupidity of those who downvote this game because they feel threatened by any game that surpasses their favorite title.
This is not merely another great game...it's place lies next to titles such as Chronotrigger, Half Life, Morrowind and others...games that mark a generation and leave higher standards for others to follow.
