EDIT: I wanted to add something - guys comparing this [not bad] game to Planescape: Torment or Fallout series are lying. This is not a similar game. ("Can't touch this!")

Witcher 3, while fun in the beginning, after 50 hours got tedious on me because of the grind/chore in a MMO-ish kind of way.

    I'll explain now. The bad:

    - Too many dull sidequests! The damsel in distress (Ciri) will have to wait a couple of months because you want to level up (to prepare for the future fights, of course!), for this you do zilions of dull fetch/kill side quests. There are just too many of them. IMHO only main story quests are very good. Like finding Anna for the baron, brilliant. So, IMHO side quests are too many and 90% are boring.
    - After several fights (after like 15 minutes of fighting) you need to visit a blacksmith to repair swords. Some would call this fun. Like weapon/armor buff that is good for 15 minutes, really?
    - Collecting herbs and loot from bodies is a grind. This is because you need to "aim" VERY carefully to collect it. Also, herbs are too many in number and kind, is it a gardening simulator?
    - Collecting loot from containers is a grind! I can't believe I am saying this! But there are COUNTLESS sacks and crates and chests everywhere which you need to pick. I would have the number of sacks and chests 100 times less (yes!), but with more coins and stuff in them. Who wants to open 100 chests with a couple of coins and a trash item like cowmilk or a mug inside? Chests should be more rewarding. Gimme just one chest per map but with 1000 coins! Make it difficult to take. Also it is not very logical to have countless chests in the world, with stuff, waiting for you! So, in short, how can it be fun, if almost every room may have like 15 sacks and crates, with trash items, and you need to carefully aim to loot each of them?
    - Controls are unnerving. For example, in menues like shopping you have to press different action buttons for some weird reason. Sometimes it is E, sometimes it is Space. Really?! So before you press a button, you need to check it if it is the right one. Many times I sold items which I did not want to sell - Ok another reload (BTW, too long for an SSD based system). More? Gerald would not always run when I want him to. Recieve a blow in the back, slow Sir! Better not run from your enemy next time Sir! Dodge-hit-dodge-hit-Quen repeat X times.
    - Weird logic in many cases. For example, you may find the diagram for lesser rune stone quite late in the game. How come Level 1 weapons have slots for rune stones? Ok you may get a few ready, without crafting, but they will be good for 30 minutes of playing because rune stones cannot be removed from weapons (they would get lost in the process). How 'bout eating chicken during the fight? Whitchersence - if you are smart and came where you should but had not examined an earlier mandatory red color track/body, you'll have to go back. Why is it always howling? I mean the constant wind force of windguru 3 star rating should be a joy to windsurfing inhabitants :)

    Still, the good:

Graphics, animation, speech (Irish like?) are nice and fun for me. Just see how Gerald jumps off his horse while it's still running! Or look at the fish playing near the lifted bridge - you feel the urge to go spearfishing! Or just look at that she-godling in Novigrad... What a waste of the brilliant work by the technical guys!

    My verdict:
So, in spite of a lot of good things in the game my score is 5/10 because great games are all about fun, not chore, and this one has more chore than fun. Witcher 1 and 2 are better games in my opinion because they are more dynamic and fun! As a reference of my tastes for RPGs, I liked Fallout 1 and 2 (and New Vegas), Gothic 1 and 2, Planescape: Torment, and Jagged Alliance 2.

Best rpg ever made (no pure rpg, skyrim is pure rpg. You can't make archer character, so it isn't pure rpg). Epic soundtrack, great gameplay, lovely graphic. But level system is bad here.

Take the negatives with a huge grain of salt. They tend to focus on one aspect and condemn the game for that one aspect. Taking all the aspects into account you can see just how much work went into this game. And I think most of us can agree, it's paid off. Expand

From games as simple as Starflight to recent hits like Skyrim, I've played them all and this goes without saying that it truly has to be one if not the best game I've ever played in my life.

All of the silly comment about controls (The Witcher has always had odd controls and I think the point is to make it feel different when you play. I mean when you play the Witcher it's pretty much like no other control experience) and all of the "It's not Skyrim" ridiculousness should be taken with a grain of salt, if that. Also anyone who says that the combat is nothing new is also silly. Sure if you're the boring press and hold and expect an in depth combat experience I mean come on... But for those that understand to get the combat experience you have to react to the enemy by parrying, dodging, and reacting defensively watching for opportunities to attack whether by swing or thrust. Light and quick attacks like the Cat or the Ursine style of stronger if slower attack methods. It's one of the best combat experiences I've had in a game.

Story is unbelievable (in the good sense) in that whether you're playing the main quest line or doing side quests each of them feel as if you are making a difference in the lives of the NPCs or the world as a whole. Each of the characters personalities were extremely well done as well (Even Lambert ..ugh love/hate)

As has been said before, the graphics are some of the most visually stunning I've ever seen and you're reading this from someone whose played card melting games like Crysis, Metro, Far Cry, etc. So whatever downgrade happened (running a 970 so I did notice a performance difference) has had little to no impact on the visual quality of the game in my opinion.

Has to be Game of the Year.

The Game with big "G". CDProjekt made really cool, fresh, stunning and attractive game. Amazing and beautiful open world + freedom to move and action + still great graphics (not as in trailer because of crappy consoles) + interesting story + 16 absolutely free DLCs (hey EA,Ubi etc. learn how it's done!).
    It's awesome, just try.

One of the best games I've ever played. The story is compelling. Combat can be challenging. It often requires the player to prepare for the particular type of monster and to patiently negotiate striking distances while controlling crowds of monsters. There is a lot of exploration in a very realistic looking world. Finally, the music is awesome.

But as much as I do like this title, I think there's quite a list of cons that shouldn't be overlooked if you plan to buy this game.

First of all, the Witcher is a great role playing game with an open world. The liberty you get is pretty amazing: you can rush your main storyline quests or take your time and explore the world, get contracts and side missions and end up living the witcher life.
Here lies one of the main flaws of the game: You are in pursuit of Ciri who's like a child to you and she has nothing less than the Wild Hunt on her heels. Problem is then: why would you lose time wandering left and right, getting an extra coin here and a piece of equipment there. It just doesn't add up.
Most role playing games that have side quest will have you look at them as a way to gain an edge for the remainder of the game (and I'm not talking about XP).
For example, instead of telling you "Hey, you can make an extra buck by killing this wraith..." the game would have been better telling you "Hey, the Wild Hunt has wraiths in their ranks, if you kill this wraith, you will get some coin and a better knowledge of wraiths so fighting the hunt will become easier."

Also, this game as probably one of the worst crafting systems known to mankind. It's just a mess, the alphabetical ordering makes no sense and there's no way to filter your recipes (say "Highest usable" for example).

That leads me to one of the most debated points: Combat.
When people read "revolutionary combat system" they - rightfully - have very high expectations.
Problem is, if you expect a crazy combo system like you would have in Batman for example, where you would jump in the middle of 10 monsters, slash one, stab the next then kick a third and keep on until all monsters are dead, you are heading for a big let down.
In the witcher, you do the fighting, you need to think before you move. If you get surrounded, you will have a bad day.

Finally, the main reason for not giving it a higher grade is the overall clumsy controls. You will sometimes miss ladders by an inch, you will fall from a wall you are walking on, your horse will stop running for no valid reason.
This is for me the most frustrating thing about this game.

To sum-up: The Witcher 3 is a very good game with a lot of meat, if you can live with the elements mentioned above you will have a jolly good time.
If you expect to parkour like in assassin's creed, fight like in batman and ride like in red dead redemption, you're up for a big deception.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. i have been playing it all weekend and once i get use to the clunky controls and using a keyboard and mouse again. i find the game enjoyable. kinda big and overwhelming and im level 7 by now so it is slow leveling.

the combat is good, you have to choose between upgrading your combat abilities, magic abilitles or alchemy skill. all of them will help you in combat and you have stratigies you have to use depending on what you want to excel in. im using magic, i find it easier. it is basic magic and not all powerful like in most magic games, it simply helps you get the job done. the world is great, its realistic and mature feeling. like if you were back in 1271 in our world but with monsters and a little bit of magic, no cartoony stuff. you find dead bodies hanging and just lying about as the normal scenery, not areas where a quest will happen, its just apart of the world and that life. people dying from monsters and working in their fields while a war wages on, to top all of the other BS they go through. so it seems like thats actually how the world would be versus it feeling like a fake story, like harry potter, lord of the rings.

also some people were complaining that your choices mean nothing and things will happen as they happen, you just get to act nice or like a douche, WRONG. this is a slight spoiler but i will try to give away as little as possible so you are not expecting it too much when you meet the person. but i helped someone with a fairly long quest, they got to some important documents that could hurt or help people down the line, you had the option of stopping them or letting them go. you try to stop them, it ends up killing that person but i reloaded and tried stopping them another way, i then was able to talk them out of going and heading off somewhere else, on top of getting the documents back and they were still alive and my friend, instead of keeping the documents and having to kill them. so yes choices mean something and you have different ways of handling the situation, so when it comes to "important" people, think carefully of what you want to say and happen, you could kill this important person off completely!

the only part i dont like is the level of the creatures, some are too high to fight but i feel this just forces you to explore certain areas versus making it like a grid pattern(which is what i normally do) and forces you to travel, instead of staying close to home and being comfortable until you can uber destroy everything and it be simple and pointless. so its not insanely easy but not cartoonish and unrealistic feeling.

it is atleast worth renting and giving it a try, the alchemy stuff is harder to get into and actually want to do, more so then i thought, takes more thought and effort then i want but thats why i use the magic skill tree instead for fighting and i just buy food to help heal myself or i meditate. some people like complicated, i just enjoy complicated magic instead. so atleast rent or borrow from a friend, you wont regret it unless you hate massive games altogether and you want something that doesnt let you think.

Now a good 10-hours into the game, I can safely say I'm not enjoying myself. The scenery is beautiful, and the game is vast, but I don't feel immersed. The movement of the character is clunky, especially when traversing various obstacles.

Combat seems nice and fluid at first glance, but doesn't really satisfy. Unlike Shadow Of Mordor, a game that nails this free-flowing mechanic of combat, The Witcher 3 doesn't quite get it right. It's too hard to see when enemies attack, making it very hard to know when to dodge and parry, and the fact that I have to start snacking in the middle of a fight to the death with a wraith completely breaks immersion. Geralt should've put on 10 pounds from the sheer amount of baked apples I have chowed down so far.

Story wise, the game fail to capture me. I often forgot where I am and why I'm there. Maybe because I'm not really a Witcher-fan.

All in all, this game seems like an attempt to make the worlds largest pizza, and then not really caring what toppings goes on. It leaves me with a bland taste in my mouth and a sense of unfulfillment. There's not enough chew-chew in this caramel.

A beautifully polished game that without a doubt has raised the bar on the genre. It is impressive in nearly every aspect, and the only gripes I have with it is the clunky character movement (the responsiveness can lag at times), and the AI which can be erratic/stupid (i.e. NPC doesn't detect you even though you are in close proximity and shooting at it).

I have mixed feelings about this game so I'll start with the worst thing:
-the combat controls in this game are absolutely dire. -the combat controls in this game are absolutely dire. If you've come from playing a game with a combat system as tightly designed as Bloodborne then playing this will be a shock to the system for you. I can't believe they managed to make this huge fantastic game and then drop the ball on something as fundamental as the controls. Geralt is so slow at putting into motion what you've input, you're best off just button-mashing and hoping for the best. Combine this with the god-awful camera and you have one of the worst-functioning combat systems in recent gaming, so much so that I had to lower the difficulty from the harder setting to the normal setting, not because I was finding it too difficult, but because I wanted to spend less time doing something so unenjoyable. This, for me, is the single worst aspect of Witcher 3.

    Other minor niggles:
-although the inventory system is very functional, you can't order items by value, weight, etc which I feel would have been a big help
-I'm not a big fan off the graphical style of the world... This is more of a personal preference thing but I feel it looks too colourful and cartoony in places. The dynamic weather is okay but can leave the trees and grasses moving in a weird, rubbery way.
-most enemies don't telegraph their attacks very well but there IS a red-indicator that appears before an attack, so this only really becomes a problem when there's multiple enemies on-screen. This wouldn't be an issue at all if the controls and camera were actually any good.
-Geralt can't fall 4 feet without losing a chunk of health, which is annoying and a little jarring considering he's meant to be some sprightly acrobatic Witcher.
-uninteresting upgrade/skill tree. Most abilities are a dull '+X% to this stat' affair. Also, each of these have to be equipped for you to use them, which I found a little silly. For example, why would Geralt lose the ability to hit 5% harder with his fast attack? O yea, you un-equipped it in the menu. It just doesn't make much sense from a role-play perspective.
-not as free-roaming as you'd think. Most areas and quests are essentially locked to you (because enemies don't level with you) until you level up enough to explore/do them. Doesn't bother me too much this, but if you're expecting to run off Skyrim-style and do your own thing then think again.
-some minor graphical bugs e.g. Pop-in and frame-rate. Not as big of an issue as some would have you believe tho. Loading times are good.

    Now for the good:
-fantastic sound design... Music is perfect for the world and the voice acting, for the most part, is sublime. Some people don't like Geralt's voice actor but I think he does a great job. Sound effects like the weather are also fantastic.
-the characters are fully-fleshed out and believable, even the minor characters . I never skipped the dialogue (which is rare for me), and found myself totally engrossed in what was going on. You can really see the effort the designers have put into this aspect of the game. Geralt is a brilliantly realised protagonist and the voice-actor delivers all his subtleties perfectly (like his sense of humour).
-the narrative in general is excellent
-I absolutely love the quest design... You won't find many boring 'fetch quests' here and when you do find any, there's always more too them weather it be an interesting story to uncover or an intriguing location to explore or a tough enemy to fight. I've poured hours into following whole quest lines that have nothing to do with the main story. There's plenty of 'moral-grey areas' you find yourself in when doing a favour for someone and you uncover some hidden truths. More often than not, things are not as they seem and you feel like there is a real consequence that results from the choices you make.
-preparing yourself for fights by reading up in the bestiary and preparing the right oils and bombs etc is a really cool, rewarding and immersive aspect of the game.
-it's definitely got that addictive 'just one more quest' quality to it
-the sheer amount of content is mind-blowing. I find it incredible that a team of around 200 people put this together with this much attention to detail. Speaking of which...
-I really appreciate details like NPC's moving at a pace that matches your own when you're following them. Also there's nice touches with the menu's e.g when buying from an alchemist you can access your alchemy menu from the shop menu, so you don't have to exit to see what you need. There's a ton of other neat touches, too many to put here.
-Gwent, the in-game card-game, is great and the perfect de-stress after you've just been getting pissed off with the God-awful controls.

All in all, a fantastic game worth your money... I only give this a 7 because there's just too many flaws that spoil the experience - it loses 2 points on the controls alone.

How fantastic story it has, how brilantly it addresses mature themes and topics, how deep and complex it is and how masterfully it simulates life in a medieval setting but there is only one way to truly experience this jewel and that is to play it. Do that and take a week or more off from whatever you are doing for this is going to be one hell of a vacation! You ll never forget this ride! The only shortcoming is that its already over for me.. how do I envy those who are still about to expecience it!

The DLC is either free for some and very fairly priced for the rest.
The characters and plot dance with threads in hand to weave a marvelous tapestry rich in lore and history. You care about the characters and what happens to them and it's impossible to not get engrossed in the vibrant and masterfully woven world of Wild Hunt.
Combat is phenomenally improved since the last game, and the use of objects such as bombs and potions actually feels worthwhile. Alchemy and crafting are actually fun and useful this time around, too.

All-in-all, this massive, unique, entertaining, and beautiful open-world fantasy game full to the brim with sex and gore is by far the best game I have played to date. 70 hours on it and still going. Kudos, CDPR.

The combat is a bit stiff and even at the highest difficulty it feels.....easy, provided you take the time to spec intelligently. Gwent is incredible for what it is, a card game played against NPCs. That mini-game alone has provided more enjoyment to me than several games that I have spent tens of dollars on.

Quests are....enjoyable? Who would have thought that was possible. NPCs are quite enjoyable even though at times they are repetitive as is to be expected by their "small" budget. Patches come swiftly and for the most part effectively. Performance is nothing to complain about, aside from Hairworks, its hard to find a reasonably powerful system that can't handle the game with the right settings. Crashes are almost nonexistent even the day of launch. Add in an NG+ mode and I'll likely double my already triple digit play time once I finish the story.

Absolutely without a doubt, my favorite game to come out in many years. Dark Souls 1 or perhaps Morrowind, in its own time, are the only games comparable that I can think of. Skyrim/Oblivion, Fallout 3, Mass Effects, Risen....Played them all and if I played W3 first, I'd likely have felt them sterile on many levels. But that is a discussion for another time.

10/10 would write this entire review again just to enjoy thinking about the game some more.

The story is memorable and very captivating. CDProjekt RED made no mistakes when writing it, especially because of the fact that it is totally non-linear. All the quests are very smooth and don't drag on too long. Even if there is a lot of traveling involved, I have always found it fascinating to ride through unexplored terrain on horseback, even discovering new towns whilst in the middle of a quest, which I may do upon my own bidding. The characters, you may love or you may hate, but they strike emotion, and that is what makes them unforgettable. The world is vast and filled with a myriad of things to explore. It would take hours for me to bore myself looking around the map, let alone a single town. It is very obvious that there was some inspiration from other games, such as Dragon Age: Inquisition and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. If you have not played either of the first two Witcher games, I recommend you play at least one to familiarize yourself with some of the core elements of the game.

I am afraid , however, I must address the graphics. If you were expecting to play what you saw in the 2013/2014 trailers, then you may be disappointed. The game was heavily optimized to keep frame rates up. In doing thus, the game has become a lot less pretty and overwhelmingly realistic. The foliage is clearly not three dimensional, the hair (even with Nvidia Hairworks) does not look very kosher, and some of the terrain textures look rather grainy. There is still some very beautiful imagery, but overall, it is definitely not up to par with some of the less recent games, like DA: Inquisition. However, this does not take away from the gameplay.

All in all, this game is a marvelous experience and I highly recommend you try it out, graphical downgrade aside.

It really is "next-gen", a phrase which people always throw around but more often than not it's misused. Running (just running,, walking, jumping is fine) is a joke though, its just so clumsy and inaccurate I hardly ever use it. I strongly recommend turning auto-run off asap.

Combat is fun, much better then AC or any other 3rd person game that comes to mind, but still way too arcade to my liking (locking on, no precision, blocking and counterattacking with a single click). Playing on hard you have to prepare for bigger battles, use potions, oils and signs, so its diverse and challenging. There is a very annoying thing about combat though, enemies tend to have a wierd aggro range, bandits can just stand and
yell at you, taking crossbow shots and bombs in the face...monsters sometimes just de engage you in the middle of battle, turning their backs on you and walking away, as they suddenly just couldnt be arsed about fighting the player.

The most disturbing thing for me is though the fact that I can just loot every **** house, even is the residents are standing right next to me! Wtf? It seems so easy to fix, and mind numbing that they left it the way they did. Theres other **** too, like bad npc pathfinding and loads of minor grahical bugs.

Far from it, it is full of references to lore and characters and monsters we found on both previous titles, as well on the books.

By the way, even if you are not very found of reading, DON'T MISS THE BOOKS. Reading them is like being on new unpublished/unplayed adventures of our beloved Geralt.

This is a truly deep and mature RPG, brutally hard on the two highest difficulty settings and requiring much, much more from the player than simple button mashing. This is a deep, complex, intelligent and mature RPG for a mature audience. The story goes to great lengths to avoid clichés, and even pokes fun at them at times. For someone like myself, who has more than 15 years of RPG experience, it is a real treat to be able to take part in this world.

I don't give out perfect 10/10 easily but here is a game that truly deserves it, CD Projekt RED has gone above and beyond to realize their vision. There are few niggles here and there, small things that could be improved perhaps. But knowing CD Projekt RED they will continue to polish this masterpiece a few more times before they finally call it done.

If you like RPG's buying the Witcher 3 is a no brainer, it is a game you simply have to play. And when you do be sure to savour it and take your time. This is one of the finest RPG's of our generation

With countless side quests, which include "secondary quests". "Witcher Contracts" and "Treasure Hunting," the Witcher 3 is bountiful in activities. Of important note is that these side quests are given just as much attention as main quests, which means full cinematic dialogue and cut-scenes and many of them are just as enjoyable - if not more so - than the main quests. The world is gorgeous. If you want to experience its beauty to the fullest, I recommend getting either a gtx 980 ti or a Titan X graphics card. I have a Titan X myself, and I use ultra settings and maintain a FPS that ranges between 45 and 60 (I play at 2500 x 1400 resolution). I recommend that you also disable "Hair Works" as it's an unimportant graphical feature that can drop the frame rate by about 12 FPS.

The story, characters, and voice acting are all excellent. The combat is improved from the Witcher 2 and rewards the player who skillfully combines dodging, rolling, parrying, swordplay, and the use of signs and bombs.

Unlike most games that make the claim your choices shall bear consequences and turn out to fail in this regard, the Witcher 3 can honestly make this claim. Your choices DO matter as there are consequences that change the outcomes of various parts of the story.

This is the best RPG to come out in years and is essential for all RPG enthusiasts.

The Witcher 1 already provided an unique story and submerging world experience, the Witcher 2 with it's lacking combat system still was a pearl with powerful dark fantasy world in full of its shades. But this? This is rendering me speechless. The amount of work and effort put into the game is absolutely overwhelming and can bee seen in every corner of the world from shattered village hut thru deep mysterious caves to vivid medieval cities and castles. But this is juts but a scenery. What makes this game the greatest game of all times (so far!) is the story and the deep, interesting, and complicated characters. Not some dull 2d black/white dolls like in DA:I or some other 'blockbuster' RPG titles in the recent games. In the Witcher 3 you get submerged into the vast living world straight on. And you can't get our until the game is over, and this will not happen before at least ~200 hours of gameplay! Can you believe this guys? So much for so little. The voice-acting is simply great in every way, the music piece by Priscilla is actually hearttouching as opposed to the cringeworthy music scene in Dragon Age: Inquisition and the games' music itself is also brilliant, from the awesome fight music to the cool tavern music that will stick in your head for weeks.

The thing that is so special about The Witcher 3 is the soul and atmosphere that can be found not just in the whole world itself but in all the side-quests as well. Usually in comparable open-world games like Skyrim 90% of the side-quests are just filler. In TW3 every sidequest has an interesting story, fully voiced dialogue scenes, choices and intriguing outcomes. The main quest is very long and interesting as well, at times even very sad and emotional.

The World itself is not just huge but filled to the brim with relevant content everywhere. The game really respects and rewards the players time and investment. I often found myself just riding around the areas or walking through a forest or wide landscape, would take in the awesome view and then suddenly discover stairs to a cellar with a hidden secret in it or see a ruin in the distance and find something super interesting there. The game really invites exploration. And the world itself just feels so consistent and like an actual real place instead of like a plastic video game world.

Then there is the set of characters, imo the games' biggest strength. The stripped-from-emotions-but-still-kindof-a-softie-inside Geralt to the beautiful yet cunning and independent sorceresses Keira, Triss and Yennefer, your quasi-daughter Ciri as well as side-companions like Zoltan or Dandelion really make you care about them and want to talk with them as much as possible. Even the enemies or "neutral" characters like Emhyr, who is very well voiced by Charles Dance, all have nuance and great varities to their characters.

If I had to criticize the game for some things - and the games does have flaws - it's the following: a) the horse controls sometimes feel off like you just suddenly stop gallopping for no reason; b) underwater controls in regards to descending/ascending are really wonky; c) sometimes there are too many quests for a certain level-zone, which basically means you'll already have progressed further and not get any more XP by those "lowlevel" quests; d) the ending in regards to "what happened to all these characters" as well as the triss romance in general should've been expanded further to give more closure.

Overall this is probably my favorite fantasy RPG of all time. It is simply a masterpiece in nearly all regards and the few flaws that there are really shouldn't discourage anyone from experiencing this gem.

I have been more than hyped for this game for the longest time - I literally pre-ordered the preorder. (That is, before preorders were open, you could sign up to be on the distribution list to hear about the preorder - I did this as soon as it as even available).

I then followed the game throughout every part of development. Every piece of news, every screenshot, trailer, every single official word that came out, I consumed. I knew what I was doing was detrimental - games never live up to hype. The more you follow a game, the more disappointed you'll be.

Finally, the game came out and became the only game I've ever played (and I've played a ton) to live up to every iota of hype . I immediately clocked over 120 hours in the first two weeks, beat it, and am dying to play the expansion packs.

This was by far the greatest game I've ever played. I've 220 Steam games, dozens on GOG, and a plethora of physical games - and that's PC alone. I've also been playing games since the Atari console. It is by far the best game I've ever played.

That is not to say it is without flaws - the UI could use some work with regard to inventory management, mutagens are generic, as are trophies. There are a handful of nitpicking things I could complain about.

But instead, how about the good - the world is huge. It's reactive. Novigrad is the first video game city I've ever been in that feels like a real city. Tons of NPCs, most of whom just going about their days. The idle chatter is hugely immersive.

Your decisions in side quests can vastly influence the main quest hours or days later. Every side quest is meaningful - there are no pointless fetch quests that plague so many open world RPGs. The detective angle for contracts is awesome and fun. CDPR has basically thought of every way a quest could go, too. Many times I'd have 'accidentally' completed a quest via random exploring before finding the quest giver. Every time, the game correctly sussed this out and had appropriate dialog for this.

The story is emotional, meaningful, and draws you in like no other. The voice acting and mocap is obscenely good, and you feel like those you are interacting with are real people.

The combat gameplay is phenomenal. It is challenging (on harder difficulties. I've been told the easier difficulties are also 'newbie' friendly), it is rewarding, it is visceral and satisfying. If you die, it's because of your own mistakes - there are no 'cheap' deaths.

The minigames are fun, and some people happily spend hours upon hours playing Gwent rather than slaying monsters. I loved the fist fighting, and hope they add more in a DLC or expansion.

I simply cannot rave about this game enough. The biggest downside is that it has simply ruined this genre of gaming for me altogether. Never again will I be able to sit through pointless side quests, distracting conversation options, a pale imitation of real cities, etc. All of the 'acceptable' breaks from reality, all the leeway we give games because they're 'just video games,' and it'd be 'too hard' to do any better, I can't accept anymore. CDPR has created a masterpiece and I genuinely worry that I will not be able to enjoy another game till Cyberpunk 2077, or the Witcher 4.

My only complaint so far is the looting system, it's sometimes annoying to get into a position where you loot an item, I often end up activating a torch or candle instead of looting the item because I'm not exactly in the right position, they could have done that better. A couple of things that annoy me is that the crafting system is still a bit too convoluted and swimming controls drive me insane. But in the grand scheme of things, these issues really are minor.

Also I just meet the minimum requirements for this game, and surprisingly it runs fine, as long as most of the Post Processing effects are off, and graphics are set to Low or Medium.

One can just hope, that those kindergarten-designers from DA:I and TES learn a lot from this game....

I just finished the game after 70 hours, and I have to say my opinion of this game now is drastically different from that of the first 20 hours.

I think this game has many flaws, such as mechanics, skills and abilities design, enemy and encounter designs and level design so on. Games like Skyrim and Bloodborne have much more entertaining core gameplay.

But the Witcher 3 redefines the scope and depth of what a game's narrative can hold. Although the narrative isn't terribly interesting in the beginning, it soon expands into a vast variety of different stories that are woven together into a coherent and vigorous narrative spanning many hours. This is something we haven't seen in RPG storytelling before. I suspect this was where the bulk of the game's efforts went into, and it's the part that remains with you after the credits roll.

If RPG's before the witcher were analogous to teenage fiction with A to B straightforward storytelling, the Witcher 3 feels like a complex novel you have to struggle through, but the very act of navigating such a complex narrative is an entertaining and rewarding exercise in itself.

I think the scoring of this game as a 9.3 vs a 9.5 comes down to what weighting you give to the "game" portion vs the "role-playing" portion. With my criteria prior to playing this game, I would have given it a 9.3, because I believed that games should foremost be games. However, The Witcher 3 completely works as just a piece of interactive entertainment, with the emphasis on the participation in the broader narrative more than the moment to moment gameplay. As an experience, even with its gameplay shortcomings, I think this game deserves the distinction of one of the top 10 video"game" experiences ever.

Very satisfying game and a blast to play. Not the graphics shown in VGX and previous trailers but it looks gorgeous nevertheless, and I quickly moved to an immersive gameplay and a captivating story. It's a joy to steer away from the main quest and wander in the huge open world doing interesting side quests and taking contracts with my witcher senses tingling.

Beautiful music, fantastic voice acting and the atmosphere of the game feels epic. Impressive game in size and scope, truly a masterpiece.
The combat have a great flow and plays better than Witcher 2, the addition of Dodge is very welcome and offers variety. Witcher games stayed true to the novels spirit and are sublime and truly RPG at its finest. 10/10 for the best part of the trilogy, can't wait for the expansion, and for the rest of the free DLCs.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Absolutely great. 120 hours of my first playthrough, not a single minute of boredom and willing to start again. Directly hits the top of my best games ever list, together with the Mass Effect trilogy (as a whole) and a (extremely) modded Skyrim. As an added bonus, the Witcher games made me discover Sapkovski, for what I will be ever grateful.

    Really great game.
The story, the characters and the world are really intriguing so far. And I have to admit that that doesn't happen very often for me. The amount of content is staggering. The women in the story are strong, beautiful and actually look like women unlike (insert game here). The soundtrack perfectly fits the atmosphere. And I really love the fact that it doesn't shy away

However the game was severely downgraded and some assets don't look impressive at all (water and vegetation for example). Also to me movement controls feel very unnatural (Swimming for instance is a challenge).

This game is beyond words. I have poured about 50 hours into it and there is still lots to do,considering im only half way through. Before this i had never played a Witcher game so i was put off but i was reassured it was very accessible and it is. Dont be put off by it being the third in the series as anyone can pick up and play. Hats off to the devs Expand

The Witcher 3 says no to all of this - it's a great game with a fully realized setting, it's a joy to play, the business model behind it treats its customers like human beings, and it delivers a story that finally hits the tone of the books.

Probably the best open-world RPG ever made, but it still falls prey to some of the genre's worst traps.

I've made it pretty clear that it's hardly a flawless game, but that doesn't change the fact that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is something pretty bloody special and you should absolutely play it.
