First I must ask. Are the people giving this a perfect 10/10 playing the same game? This game is far from perfect. In fact it is far from even being a good game. Are the people giving this a perfect 10/10 playing the same game? This game is far from perfect. In fact it is far from even being a good game. Nowadays all it takes is for a game to be good is to not have too many bugs and micro transactions. The Outer World doesn't have micro transactions and there are very few bugs (one game breaking bug on the last mission) but that does not make this a good game.

It starts out somewhat interesting when you are a fresh adventurer and don't know where the story is taking you. You start imagining an amazing world and hoping that it keeps getting better. As you progress you suddenly realize that it isn't going to get better and never will. I won't put spoilers but lets just say that there is no payoff for anything you do. You can complete a main quest and your reward is just more of the same boring things you already have. There is never anything amazing that happens in this story either like the first time seeing Liberty Prime in action in Fallout 3. Nothing that will "wow" you.

My biggest gripe is the writing. I found myself physically cringing at some of it. If you are a certain type of person you may enjoy the cutsie playful dialogue and the constant sarcastic statements that your main character makes, along with pretty much every character in the game but I couldn't stand it. If you are looking for a serious story that will intrigue and immerse you then this is NOT the game for you. You may think "oh its finally getting serious" then the next set of lines have you wise crack like something an immature grade school. Its downright awful.

The gameplay is nothing to write home about and barely worth mentioning. There are only a handful of guns and they are all unsatisfying to use. I went the entire game with the assault rifle just spraying bullets at everything because sniping and the charged weapons just didn't feel fun in my opinion. Melee is a joke I didn't even bother with it. You have heavy weapons which I didn't bother with either as I didnt see any point. The game is so easy it doesn't matter what you decide to use or how you spend you skill points and perks. Speaking of which pretty much amount to a bunch or percentage increases. There is nothing fun about any of it. You will mostly fight the same type of enemy because there is no variety. I can count the number of different enemy types on my hands.Armor feels like an afterthought and the skills seem like they were placed on pieces at random. There doesn't seem to be any thought process that went into designing armor so I just used the set with the highest armor rating. There are only 2 pieces of armor by the way chest and helmet.

You have companions and companion abilities but they are pretty much meat bags used to distract the enemy. The companion abilities force you into an un-skippable 10 second cut scene every time you use an one so I abandoned them quickly and just shot everything to death. The whole thing is a boring unorganized mess. By the last missions I was disinterested to the point where I didn't bother killing anything and just ran past the enemy. At that point there was no reason to loot anything or explore because the game is so linear that there is nothing to explore.

I wasn't a fan of the artstyle, the characters, story or gameplay. The only reason I finished the game is because I felt obligated to having been swindled into thinking this would actually be good. The trailer said "from the original creators of Fallout and the developers of Fallout: New Vegas" is also false advertising. They are only the same in name. The original people who made those amazing games no longer work for the company. Overall this game is barely a 4/10 below average.

Sorry but the people shouting "perfect rpg" from the rooftops are honestly deluded or have never experienced a good RPG before.

    Good things:
-Quests and dialogue were varied and had choices, the humour was spot on there were times I literally burst out laughing.
-Story was also competent, not the best but not bad. I won't spoil here.
-Graphics and art style were really stunning, I could really look around and admire these planets. (only bad part is characters show little emotion).
-Bug free, didn't experience a single bug in my whole playthrough.

    Bad things:
-You never see your character besides in the menu. You might roll your eyes at this or whatever but seriously, you spent a good 30mins making that perfect looking character. Guess what? You only ever see your character in your menu. Not a single time ingame, even at the end credits it shows a random default character. Not yours.
-Day and night/waiting/sleeping is pointless without ingame time and NPC routines.
-The world feels static, the towns don't feel alive. NPCs don't have schedules or routines, they literally stand in the same spot day and night. (besides the odd patrolling guard).
-Skills/perks are boring, no innovation or fun. Mostly it's just boring percentage increases.
-Loot and gear is boring. So many reskins. Even the "unique" items are rarely unique. There are a handful of fun items but nowhere near enough. Most items are not even worth picking up, you might be thinking, "can't I sell them though?" and yes you can. However bits.. you get way too many bits and nothing useful to spend them on. I broke down most items instead of selling and still finished the game with 40k bits with nothing to spend it on. Complete waste of time since the game ends at the credits.
-No minigames/fun side games. I don't mean crap like lockpicking/hacking minigames. I mean fun side games like gambling/brawling and other minigames that are in most other rpgs.
-No Crafting/professions, how can you have an RPG without these core features? And no, I don't consider the very basic modding system to be crafting.
-You can't interact with the world. Besides opening/closing doors you can't even sit down in a chair and drink a beer at the bar. Isn't this meant to be an RPG? How can you roleplay in a world you can't interact with.
-Exploring is often pointless and unrewarding, mainly because the loot is so bad and there being so few hidden quests.
-The game is just too short, you can't play on after the credits. Yes you can start a new game and play differently but everything you've done up to that point is gone. No free roaming or NG+.

    END:
I really wanted to love this game. I've played RPGs for so many years and was looking forward to this. But honestly I felt so disapointed. Besides the dialogue choices, the RPG elements are non existent.

I think it's all have to do with the fact that the big arch in this game is fight against giant corporation/government and there's no solid arguments in real life for supporting big business with all of the corruption surfaced just in a past decade.
In any case, the world is big and beautiful, the shooting part feels good even tho the game is converted to bullet sponges-fest closer to the end, so it's really playable, but it's not really that grounded to reality rpg/fps mix that previous obsidian's game of the same genre was (nor that it claimed to be, even tho it heavily borrows from it).
TLDR: Better then fallout 3 and especially 4, but not as good as brilliant Nev Vegas.

It's not. What it is is a very competent game that is fantastic in its best parts and decent in its worst. Obsidian/PD have taken the defining bits of New Vegas, made them better, and without handicaps imposed by Bethesda, turned them into a game that satisfies the thirst for a real action-roleplay game.
The writing is witty and gets the point across, even if it becomes a little preachy at times. It has a depth that forces the player away from the "evil corporate bad, freedom fighters good", to consider both sides of the struggle.
Mission types are on the weaker end of the spectrum. They're mostly fetch quests, but I never felt like I was forced to do them against my will. They also tend to have several avenues to complete them (e.g. sneaky, silver tongue, or guns a-blazing).
I picked up the game and couldn't put it down all day. Personally I think it's bloody brilliant and a testament to Obsidian's abilities. I had to take away two poitns because I found the music severely lacking, enemy AI below average, and performance poor.

Also, there's a lot of silly quests, like, you speak to the NPC, then you go to the next room, read a document that is conviniently right there, go back and talk again to the NPC. Wow, mission acomplished! There are some graphical glitches, but in general it's a good game. Far from perfect, but fun. Expand

Our slow-mo skill is just the slow-mo skill. The only one thing that makes shooting looks better.
Maybe the most boring world to explore i have ever seen, there is just nothing to find except one scared of bugs man hiding in the toilet(yes obsidian you hate males we got this). That said, let's begin. You're probably wondering "Wow, why has this jackass given this masterpiece 6/10?". Well, that's easy: This game is short. It lacks content in a variety of areas, including story and character development. There's limited weapon/armour crafting/modification. The stats and perks are just about varied enough to be able to create a new character with a specific playstyle.

I feel this game is meant to be played on a harder difficult to pad out and fluff the content. Maybe that was my mistake, but - referring to Obsidian's previous work - I should be wanting to play this game again. Differently, on a harder difficulty, with a different character type. Maybe a Melee/ Heavy armourer, stating into leadership for team play with my companions. But...I don't want to.

The game play was fun *at first*. But after a while I realized... I hadn't really picked up the new debuff types, I wasn't informed (without specifically looking for it in the codex) about the viability of the elemental types. There wasn't many enemy types to mix up the gameplay either. Leading to a lot of sigh-inducing mission endings where I thought I'd fight a unique enemy as a boss. But nope, just a reskin. Or even the same old enemy I'd killed dozens, if not hundreds, of at that point.

The crafting/modification/tinkering system is just... like a last second edition? There are not many weapon variations. I found possibly a dozen special weapon/armour pieces. Probably a few more. As well as a select few science weapons. And.... they're crap. Not in practice, but they cost so much to 'tinker' (i.e. level up, which gives increased dps) that they're not worth using after a few levels. Again, maybe on Supernova you'd use them. But it'd be an expensive investment because, as much as you can get lots of money in the game. You can only get it *once* via the quests because most drops arent' worth a damn. Armour/weapons barely sell for anything, and are better for breaking down for weapon or armour parts to be able to repair your items.

There are only about a dozen or so mods types between guns and melee weapons. The modifications is very bare bones. And that's exactly the best way to describe a lot of mechanics in this game: barebones.
Your companion quests, side quests, even the main story quests, enemy types, weapons, clothes, armour, mods... there's just enough of said mechanic or feature.
Which is hilarious, because there's a huge variety of consumables and junk items. Too much even. To the point that it's a pain in dick to specifically search for an item. There are multiple consumables that all have the same exact effect. Be it + to mind/body attritube. Or +1 to personality, but -1 to 3 other stats. +25% health.
DAMNIT, you need only 1 item with said effect, not 3 or 4. So your consumables become a confusing mess.

Which leads me onto the menus. There's no sort option to seperate heavy/medium/light armour. Or to seperate light guns, heavy guns, 1 handed melee, 2 handed melee. Or a lock feature to stop you selling/scrapping certain guns. You have to be very meticulous in your menus when you're faffing around with gear. It could certainly be improved, it's one of the worst I've ever encountered in a game.

Now, let's talk about the space map. You can travel to certain planets or satellites. But most of them are a *1 mission* area, which you won't have to visit again. Specifically, there's maybe 3 huge areas to explore (mostly hub areas) with 1 massive world, 1 large world and several small hub spaces that won't take long to explore. AND THERE ARE PLANETS ON THE MAP THAT MAKE IT LOOK LIKE YOU COULD GO THERE LATER, GIVING A FALSE SENSE OF VASTNESS.

That's why it took me only 21hrs to complete this game. completing all but 1 mission (I botched a mission due to the order I did a specific set of missions in, no biggie though).

Sorry to unload my disappointment with this game. It has fun gameplay, I enjoy the companion abilities and orders you can give them. The story is quite well written, along with the character dialogue. It's such a beautiful and extraordinary game. But I feel like it's lacking in nearly all aspects.
I was raging about it being a "Game of the Year" contender. It certainly puts Bethesda's FO and TES series to shame, that's for sure. But I don't feel it reaches the heights of FO:NV. They tried to copy a formula but somewhere along the line they fell flat on their face. I would love a sequel where they improve. DLC or any form of expansion to this game would be insulting UNLESS they're going to improve all those areas I've mentioned.

I did enjoy the game, it was fun and nearly a day well spent. And looking forward to eventually owning a little Sprat plushie. IF THEY EVER MAKE 'EM!

That said, The Outer Worlds is one hell of a game and a masterful RPG from Obsidian Entertainment. The game is flexible enough that you can make any character you want from a socially awkward genius to a lovable dimwit and every quest will offer at least one solid solution for you.

Every side character in the game is well developed and fleshed out, far beyond the Bethesda school of single word descriptors Nazeem in Skyrim is just a jerk. Conrad in The Outer Worlds also comes off as a jerk, until you engage in conversation and realise that he is troubled by a number of things. Even a simple bartender, that would be little more than a trade window in most games, has a history and aspirations that you can delve deep into. It does so much more to develop the world as a real place with people to care about. The companions and plot relevant characters are even better, with complex histories and conflicting emotions on a number of matters. It just makes engaging with them so much more enjoyable, a positive thing considering the amount of dialogue, especially in the early hours of the game.

The combat is fun and engaging, with the gunplay being largely satisfying and the melee combat feeling nice and weighty. The TTD system is a nice answer to Fallout's VATS system, but this is essentially just bullet time which has the additional incentive of applying debuffs to enemies in order to tip the odds in your favour. Melee weapons allow you to block and you have obtain the ability to dodge in any direction from the start. As for the enemies themselves, they really fall into two categories. Ranged and melee. There are different methods of engagement, some with weak points to aim for and enemies that are susceptible to different damage types.

One negative aspect of the game is the UI elements. Navigating menus and inventory screens is a fiddly and often frustrating affair, at least on PC. Different key prompts are required in order to scrap, modify and repair items, but these can change on the fly depending on whether you are in the field or at a workbench and so on. It also appears that despite having the cursor appear in these screens, it can only be used to select items, and actions are bound to the keys. There are also some issues with the HUD, with a lot of complaints aimed at the font colours and sizes that can make it quite difficult to read some prompts and item descriptions.

In spite of this, the game is still absolutely solid. The few gripes that I have are minor and something that I will either simply need to get used to, or that can hopefully be patched with relative ease.

If you are a fan of engaging RPGs with true depth, choice and consequence you should absolutely grab The Outer Worlds as soon as possible!

Not linear or forced either. You explore and they comment, relevantly. Same lovable feel from KotoR you may have missed whole adding a taste of borderlands in their gear. No microtransactions, no loot boxes, just solid game. If cyberpunk is being compared to this, this is your fix until it comes out. The unique characters feel like real people. No one is overly typecasted into roles you feel familiar with. It's a new age an there are new ways of the world.

There are a few graphical issues on PC and I did experience a hard crash once. Normal mode also feels incredibly easy once you get going with speech and hacking banking a ton of early experience and bypassing possibly challenging content, kinda like KotoR. You'll also feel some familiarity such as a broken robot that becomes a character on a ship etc.

It's an overall fresh experience that puts current IPs to shame. Unique characters, funny dialog, great gameplay. Made for RPG lovers that need a familiar, yet possibly perfected, change of pace.

Personally I prefer the fallout formula.

Also, I noticed that if I kill someone without any witnesses I still loose standing with the faction. I feel like that should not be the case as no one knows the person is dead and no one knows I killed the person.

I would recommend this game, but do not buy this expecting fallout new vegas, you will get disappointed. I really hope obsidian continues to develop the idea and further expands on it in future releases.

I am 99% positive they played through the game on easy mode and skipped dialogue often. My first play through I decided to run on the highest difficulty, which is called Supernova, and it adds survival elements like hunger, thirst, need for sleep, limited saving/fast traveling, companion permanent death, etc. I have already put around 15 hours into the game and BARELY got off the beginning world. I had to reload multiple times either because I died, or my companion(s) died. I also explored the world instead of bee-lining it straight for markers/objectives. This game is what you make it, so if you sit back and immersive yourself (which is very easy to do in this game due to a perfect balance of great writing and wacky situations) in the world, it is very easy to enjoy.

The combat (I can only speak from Supernova difficulty perspective) is difficult and requires foresight into character development and supplies management. The A.I. are typically overly aggressive and could use an overhaul into thinking/acting a little smarter.

Companions could use a little work. Their interaction in dialogues are great, the character development is fantastic, however, if you mess with their standard combat presets (ranged/melee, aggressive/passive) they seem to just sit there and do nothing if they aren't on their default settings.

I play on a 2080Ti + i7-8700k on ultra settings with an ultrawide monitor (borderless resolution) and the game runs flawlessly. I rarely see my frames drop below 100FPS (my monitor is overclocked to 100HZ) and the environment looks fantastic! People complaining about the worlds looking like a game from the 2000's are probably running the game on a GTX 1060 or some crap because this game is very beautiful. I just wish there was a 3rd person mode (I don't think there is but i'm not positive) so that I could enjoy the environment even more with some cool character shots.

Overall this game is a must play. Watching videos of this game doesn't do it justice. I wasn't going to buy this game until I noticed I could get it on PC game pass for $1, so I did just that. Every PC gamer should at least pay $1 to try it out and get their own opinion, but my opinion is 9/10, which will switch to 10/10 if they can make the A.i. smarter!

P.S. If you get the PC game pass, you have to download the PC game pass beta app as well as make sure windows is completely up-to-date, or else you won't be able to install the game, your cursor will change to a stop sign when clicking on "install".

    -Very Limited amount of guns
-3 ammo types, which gets annoying when most of your guns take the same ammo type
-Weapon mod system is lacking, I rarely use it.
-Extremely bland worlds with not much going on outside of the towns
-Terrible PC optimization (30 FPS on a 2080 at mid settings???)

Is it enjoyable to play? Yes. Is it something I’ll throw over 100 hours into and play several times? No.
Kinda glad it’s part of Microsofts live plan, I can play it without owning it for 1/10th of the cost of buying the game. One playthrough will be enough with this title anyway.

The game reminds me most of a weird Fallout, mass effect, borderlands mashup without its own distinct style. The differing zones, each with its own loading sections and the mostly tame yet still different personalities of companions is very much Mass Effect. The mobs you encounter in the zones are basically just like borderlands, Skag type mobs or bandit and psycho type mobs. Very few that feel unique to this new IP. Fallout with the dialogue, tons and tons of it, all pretty interesting but nothing….great.

It has a number of typical problems that all these games suffer from, the biggest as ever, the inventory:
Inventory management: it has a value to weight ratio filter, which is something all RPG type games need. But it also has like 40+ consumables, with a good 2-3+ different items that do the same stuff. I get these are different corporations etc selling different wares so the “need” to have their own versions of everything is there to go with the canon but my god a basic filter to split them into what they do would have been nice, or a search box where you could type names of items (if you are keen to memorize 40+ things names) or affects you want e.g. +stealth or +hack to show all consumables/armour that would give you those bonuses. Seriously these things are always added in by modders, why can’t a game dev just make it standard for a change?

Time dilation (VATS): This is fun to read the text on people and mobs, it seems most of the comedy went into these descriptions, but how it works is a bit yanky. You activate it, shoot a mob, then it jumps position to an ‘after hit’ position (if you shoot a person in the face, they suddenly move about 1m with their head back looking up or down meaning you have to then move your sights to shoot again to hit the face again). It’s not huge but its annoying, time should be going very slowly, things shouldn’t break neck change position after the first hit.

Quest tracking: one at a time. So when you have 8 quests in 1 zone and want to work out which is nearest, you’ll be flicking between journal and map 8 times!....yay…. Plus, when in a town not all quest trackers work properly. If you track a quest which is outside the town, then change from local to regional map to see where you need to go, the markers just show the town gates. You have to leave the town to see the actual destination.

A bit frustrated because everything in this game actually works.
I expected that game would be half broken but it not.
If played Fallout or TES before probably this game will be too obvious and sometimes easy.
But it's only because it not half broken and don't need tons of modes to be played.
Aside from that: good graphic, cool NPC's & dialogues, nice world.

Game is far too short, and the crippling lack of build variety means there is not enough replay value for such a short, small game. Nowhere near worth a full $60. This should have been a $40 release, and even that is a bit pricey. The writing is good, the combat is fine, and most of everything else is decent enough to pass, but it's just too damn short.

The choices provided to you in the game while seemingly vast aren't in the end as all of them lead down the same 2 paths, regardless of which dialogue choice you picked.

The companions storylines feel like there was a clear bias and favoritism by the developers. Parvati's storyline took up most of the time while Ellie storyline was the shortest and felt the most rushed. Sam had really none once you unlocked them.

Combat is just your average fps rpg with some differences here and there.

The outdoor areas tend to be too massive for their own good and for a game where you literally have to walk everywhere can lead to some tiresome treking while completely exploring the map with little to no reward for doing so.

All Dialogue NPC animations feel rushed as nearly everyone uses the same animation cycles for them, mainly being the "dead face" and "stiff body" ones.

I wanted to enjoy this game but after beating it and getting a good+dumb ending along with the secret one too. I just found myself thinking back and seeing as how i never really had fun with the game, i was bored playing through it and everything in the game was just so, bland. There was no enjoyment to be found and once i was finished with the game, i was glad to finally to be finally rid of it. I know, all you are asking yourself is: Is this game better than Fallout 76? I've never played it, sorry.

And, looking at the other reviews, of course you want to hear all about how "The outer worlds" compares to games that were popular 10 or 15 years ago. Well, believe or not, this game has a player character, and it's in first person. It also has guns that you can use to shoot people.

So yes, it's just like Call of Duty 2, that you did like, back in 2005. But with better graphics.

Slightly better graphics that, at least on the pc, come with stuttering and pop-ups, especially after every kind of transition. You'll be glad to hear that those will happen no matter how good your pc is, it's a very inclusive game, and you and your high-end rig will no longer have to stand on the sideline while everyone has so much fun bickering about the performance issues. They are not too bad, though, at least if whatever you are planning to do doesn't require precision.

You know, like when you are aiming. Really, no problem at all, since enemies will come to you. In a straight line. Fire one shot, and it's like a magic spell that turns enemies into friends, creatures, robots, bandits, they'll forget their animosities and join together to be as close to you as possible. You know, like in that game you liked in 1997, Turok, or that game on steam that some kid made, with zombies in it.

No lootboxes, like in that game you all did like in 2018, but still a lot of boxes. You'll find everything you need in those boxes, including mods for your weapons. Not mods for the game, I'm afraid, like in that game you liked in 2006, Fallout New Vegas, but you'll only use shops because you have a limited inventory, and you'll spend a lot of time there since comparing weapons and armor and mods is just like in those games that you did like before someone had the idea that it doesn't have to suck.

You also have skills, like lockpicking, in case you looted all the other boxes in every place, including homes and shops. Yes, that should be considered stealing, but no one's going to stop you from doing that, since people don't really move all that much, not even to follow you around like in that game you liked in 2002, Morrowind. Guards have far too much work standing in circles and repeating the same three lines over and over again, so they can't be bothered. In case you still manage to get caught you can intimidate them, that's one skill-check that's guaranteed to work. Your skills might not prove to be that useful in other dialogues, since there's only three choices. You know, like in that game you did like in 2012, Mass Effect 3, except that it's not color-coded.

It's a science-fiction game, you know, like that game you liked in 1982, Zaxxon. With total, unrestricted capitalism, like in that game you did like in 1994, Transporter Tycoon. You can chose to be critical about that capitalism, or commit monstrous acts, or mix it up a little, like helping the hippies once and then selling everyone into slavery. It's deep like that.

Maybe you should also look for reviews that describe the game itself, it's strength, it's weaknesses, and where it has actually managed to be *better* than that game you liked in 2005, or even different. Where it innovates, what the actual story is, if it has interesting characters, what the quests are like.

And I can guarantee you, if you have played all the games that are just like this one, and you loved them, you will find this one tiresome, and why wouldn't you. It has nothing new to offer, and it mixes gameplay and story elements that do not necessarily fit together. It fails to find it's own ground, and while it's functioning on every level, you might have a hard time to care about anything or anyone here since you've been there, and you've done that.

It's a reminder that a straight story and open world elements don't always work well together, and that exploration and loot are not just depending on quantity, but quality. It shows that dialogue choices and skill checks mean nothing without balancing, and that characters need to be refined beyond the three "choices" that lead up to that one fetch-quest they give you.

A 10/10 game is perfection. This one is ok. It could be improved on every level. If you haven't played one of those games everyone liked in 2005, I would advise you to play one of those instead, but you can add +2 points to my score.

-Fun weapons, in my opinion the weapons are fun to use, sometimes feels a tad underpowered even with upgrades.
-Graphics are pretty good, turned to ultra, the environments feel "alive" and the towns feel detailed.

    The Bad:
-Role Play is meh, elaborating, it's too easy. You can just lie, persuade, and intimidate your way through the entire game. It feels like the game pushes you to be a "jack of all trades" and there's no pros, only cons, for building your character a specific way.
-The perks are all boring, not to mention, when I completed the final quest, I was only level 29. Huge shame. I was incredibly disappointed to see that it was the final quest, and I felt like I wanted so much more to do. Compared to games that this is competing with, you are level 70 when you are nearing end game in the others. Level 20ish is supposed to be early game. Such a shame.
-Armor is terrible, unmemorable. Nothing cool about them at all, some of them can't even take mods which is dumb.
-Speaking of which, mods are also not that great, you can't stack them and the difference they make on guns is negligible.
-The questing falls flat on it's face. If you pay attention, the main story line TECHNICALLY only has 4 long standing objectives. That's it. There's a few side quests I enjoyed, but some of them were also just basic fetch quests.
-The game is just all around too short. The worlds feel way too small. There's no reason to return to them. Honestly if you really think about it. The main "meat" of the game is on Monarch. Terra 2 feels like a tutorial town. And was incredibly disappointed to find out that Monarch was "pretty much it". My advice, if you had about 5 or 6 Monarch sized planets, this game probably would have got bumped into 8/10. The length of this game is it's largest glaring problem and why it gets so many points taken off.

    Overall: 5/10
It pains me to say it, because I did in fact like the lore, I loved the characters, and I wish there were more adventures to go on, many more planets to visit, more towns to visit, and etc. If this game gives Obsidian the money to make a Outer Worlds 2, I hope they take what I, and many other "constructive critics" have been saying. Needs to be longer. Needs to be bigger. More things to do. Take this lore and expand upon it ten fold. But then again....kinda feels like a one off game. Storyline has a wrap up and everything, didn't really leave it very open ended at all. It's a big disappointment because you can see the potential in front of you, you can see that the game could have been something spectacular that would have shaken up the RPG realm. Unfortunately, we ended up with a miniature sized world, lack of leveling and RPG aspects, and some lackluster quest lines, but, with impeccable story telling and a lore that I just so dearly wish could have been more. :(

I think this is one of the worst RPGs I have ever played. The developers took shortcuts where we should have depth. While I'm not surprised this was launched as a $60 product, please consider trying it with a Microsoft Game Pass for $1 this month before you buy.

Don't get me wrong, we need more games like The Outer Worlds. We need a champion in a time where game developers are bound by producers interested in nothing more than the shortest path to profit. For the past 5 or so years we've been abused by early access titles and micro-transaction laden games to the point where anything other than that is seen as a diamond in the rough.

However, this game cannot be my champion. The Outer Worlds is one of the most simplified RPG experiences I have ever had. Beyond the extra dialogue options you get for pushing the correct arrows on the 8 or so starting stats, what does this game offer? I can certainly say it doesn't do anything cutting edge... but that's not always necessary. We can't expect to revolutionize features for a genre every year. However, can we at least expect the game to not take steps backwards in features and depth?

Here's a quick list of what I see as the biggest problems with the game.

    1. Too many static items in the game environment that should be lootable. I'm doing a melee playthrough, I walk into a hospital bay and see a giant surgical saw.... and it's a static item. I'm not asking to be able to make a spoon collection, but I think a happy medium can exist between everything being lootable, and almost nothing being lootable. Right now it seems like way too much stuff is bolted to the ground.

    2. Player equipment limited to two slots - Head, Body. Puts a huge damper on customization. Where are my legendary rings? Where's my bracers that allow me to block attacks with my fists? Where are my gloves of stability for long range weapons?

    3. "Instance" style mapping excuse for lazy game world. Simply put, the planetary exploration teleportation is awful for an RPG. No world has been built for players to explore. What you get is a bunch of map fragments to teleport back and forth to chasing down quests. Legendary enemies are not discovered, they are encountered on the linear beaten path every one of us will be forced to take. This is very much the "Dark Souls 2" bonfire teleporting system that was a downgrade from the previous version of the game.

    4. Perks tree is a **** of flat % upgrades. Move % faster, gain % health... I could have designed the perks trees in one afternoon in a boardroom with 3 people. Where's my blood mess? Where are my unique perks that make my build differ from everyone else?

    5. Simplified hacking, simplified lockpicking, simplified terminal interactions. Simplified weapon types, simplified ammunition types. All of the mini-games have been turned into "Press the action button"

All of these concerns yell at me "shortucts" forced on developers by production. I don't see the depth we have come to expect from the traditional RPG genre. I don't see character development that's going to differ or be unique, the perks that are worth taking are obvious. In the coming weeks, I think you are all going to discover this experience is lacking significantly in uniqueness. We are all going to end up with the same perks because a very limited set are actually good. We are all going to have the exact same enemy experiences, because the maps are linear.

With all that said, if you are enjoying the game please don't let me rain on your parade. I don't plan on hanging around this community for X weeks after launch to tell everyone to stop enjoying the game. Hell maybe it's just me. I see ZERO other posts on the front page criticizing the game... maybe I'm crazy.

Thank you Obsidian for not giving up after NV. And thanks to those who gave them money for the composer and everything else that allowed them to make the game at the level of Fallout, Morrowind, Baldur's Gate, etc but in 2019. Cain, Boyarsky and Avellone are geniuses! (I know that Avellone did not participate in the development)

Great game! Feels like Fallout with Bioshock art style. Very colorful game. The story is tongue and cheek humor with some goofiness. Best part is the freedom of player choice and how the story reacts to your decisions.

Obsidian makes it all come together due to a high level of polish and a determination not to take itself seriously.

This is a silly game. The story is about a cartoonishly evil yet wacky corporate dystopia in space where all the women look like boys. You can do basically anything with no consequences, which somewhat makes up for everything being very ugly and cluttered, so I don't even know what to say right now. It seems to have a shockingly adequate amount of stuff in it. It's barely an RPG yet there's lots of factions and dialogue. It hurt my eyes the first time I played but I'm ok now.

Companions are automatically loyal with little to no effort; this feels a bit forced. Armor and weapons look exactly the same except for the science weapons, which are a fun novelty for a few kills then get boring. The navigation map is a bit misleading. It looks like you have a slew of planets to explore but you don’t. They’re inaccessible. The “beating heart” of the colonies, Byzantine, feels empty and small. The story is way too short. I did almost every side quest, all of the companion quests, and am pretty sure I explored every building. I still got less than 25 hours play time. I don’t feel like I got something worth of 60$ at all. I’m still a bit shocked at how short it was. Suddenly I was on the last mission and I was so baffled. Graphics are okay to me. Decent. Meh:

    - Graphics and world design.
    - Weapon and armor design.
    - Sound effects.

    Cons:

    - Game feels outdated, not a lot of new innovational ideas.
    - Clunky movement and combat.
    - A lot of female characters feel identical to each other and are hard to tell apart. 80%+ of them goes with the tomboy look/attitude and has the same side-cut/short haircut making them all feel either obnoxious or uninteresting. An unexpected and unnecessarily overwhelming androgynistic approach overall.
    - A lot of armors are just reskins/changed color palette.
    - Inventory management is also clunky and a lot of different vendors follow the quantity-over-quality formula, making vendor-visits less interesting.
    - No third person view, even though you are able to edit your character visually at character creation. The only time you see your character is in the character screen or when AFK when the camera orbits around the player.
    - Uninspired enemies (generic bandits/wildlife/robots). There's not a lot of interesting with the adversaries the player faces (backstory and motive).
    - I was missing the overall sandbox feeling, the game was surprisingly linear at times.
    - No modding support (and it definitely could've saved my motivation for this game).

the combat feels great, the weapons feel like they work like they should, and melee only is a viable build. i would definitely suggest to check out the ''below average intelligence'' attribute, since it allows for ''dumb'' conversation responses, and to see how NPC's react to the weirdness is a delight.

i can really feel the love that obsidian put in the game, there are so many options to choose from instead of generic ''yes'' or ''no'' answers
and they may not affect the final result of a conversation but to me it's all about how a NPC responds to your choices.

the depth and background feels so great of the NPC's. i really feel like they have their own voice about their life, and honest personalities and i never got tired of dialogue, i usually skip through them fast in other games but this one has me wanting to hear more.
even logs around the world seem worthwhile reading instead of the usual ''space filler content'' that you come across where the logs are just useless pieces of junk that waste your time.

it's a roleplay game with adventure and it feels awesome to discover new things, and to have this really random conversation with a salesman wearing a moon hat about how he is doing mentally in his job and life. RPG lovers would most likely really enjoy this game for how refined this game is.
i've only done a melee playthrough so far, but i am using ranged weapons on the side (mostly heavy) and the melee moveset isn't really anything spectacular but it still feels good to use, likely due to the dodge mechanic that allows you to leap at enemies or dash out the way of hazards.

the only thing that i've seen that annoys me is that when you want to loot/pick something up, your crosshair has to be DIRECTLY on top the item/corpse, unlike other games where your crosshair can be ''around'' the object you wanna loot, and still allowing you to do so. But on the other hand, this isn't necessarily negative, because it allows for precise selection, where you don't get the awkward '' i want to select item #1, but item #2's hitbox is too large and i can't select the first one. so it isn't really a flaw with the game in my opinion.

i would recommend this game to anyone willing to give it a try or watch gameplay of the first hour or so, and if it doesn't capture you in the first hour, then i'm going to say: this may not be the game for you, and that's fine, something like ''the perfect game'' which appeals to 100% of the people, doesn't exist. but man can i tell you in my opinion does this game gets dangerously close. Obsidian sure deserve some love and support for making this game, which might after enough appreciation be in the top 10 games of 2019. it might just reach that due to being a game that got released with 0 bugs, i have around 20 hours of gameplay and i haven't seen a single one, hardly heard about them from others either. because developers like to make games ''early access'' and use that as an excuse to release a game that is not refined in any way, and this is a delight to enjoy without anything game breaking.

also a niche little tip, that occured to me when i reached level 10 and i was like: hmm, lockpicks are kind of hard to come by if you want to unlock almost every door or lock you come across: ''quick save before opening a lock'' if it wasn't worth the lockpick(s) just quick load, and move on. (only applies if you don't feel bad for ''savescumming'' ofcourse)

    TL;DR
Great game, definitely worth a try
    8/10 combat
    9/10 content
    10/10 gameplay
    10/10 ingame (false) advertisements
    lovable characters and background story
    0-1 bug(s), really refined (i didn't experience any)
    0 micro transactions
    100% worthy of your appreciation

Very well balanced between AAA and AA. Moderate graphics but stunning story.

It is an interesting game. Starts out a bit clumsy but the middle parts were quite enjoyable. I felt at the end that I barely accomplished anything.

The writing and dialogs were great. Not too chatty, sometimes whaky and there was an option to my liking almost always. The companions were fun. Adding a face to the ship's computer was a great idea.

The gunplay was okay, never felt underpowered or overpowered as I played on the lowest difficulty for the story.

The game seems to generate a lot of guns, armor and helmets but I never cared for them much. One can "upgrade" existing items for a price. Also I never cared for the food and stim items (could be nice for a food build though).

There are choices, skill-based options but other than arranging an alliance between two settlements, one has to decide for one or the other side. I decided to talk most my way through.

The graphics was okay, but running with very high on my system frequently caused FPS drops at the bigger locations. Nothing devastating. The NPC faces were odd and felt very New Vegasy, even though the engines are completely different.

One disappointing thing was the price, €60 (which is quite steep considering exchange rates to my local currency) for a AA game from the Epic store with 20-25 hours of playtime. Were it like €45, no complaints.

Игра - откровенный шлак. Можно создать сколько угодно ботов на Метакритике и поставить множество 10, но факт останется фактом - игра дерьмо.

After numerous disappointments from other companies its refreshing to play such a well developed and overall amazing game. I feel like this is the game I've waited years for, obsidian really are one of the best big game companies out there. It's like they knew exactly what everyone wanted and just did it.

It is an attempt to sell Fallout 3 in new decorations. But the thing is that this game looks far less creative and interactive than New Vegas which came out in 2010. So Outer Worlds looks dated even for 2010.

One of the best games of this year. I really like the dialogue system and the pumping system in the game. There are small bugs and errors in localization, but this does not interfere with the game.

This game is making me not miss playing Fallout New Vegas. And that is a good thing, seeing as FNV is my favorite game of all time. But we'll see if this is just new car-smell or if it really will last. I think it'll be the latter, because the writing, the characters and the gameplay is just marvellous. I do miss the free-roaming open landscape of FNV though.

This is the Fallout I have been waiting for years. I love every single part of this game, and my love is unconditional. However I would love to see better quest tracker and minimap.
Can't wait for DLC or The Outer Worlds 2!

Man oh Man! This game already won me over by basically being a Kotor 2 and Fallout.
This game is as if kotor and fallout had a baby, And an affair with firefly.

Thank you Obsidian for the amazing game that this is and
to bring us back to our KOTOR Childhood memories!

A good writing and voice acting, not so good everything else.

Lets start by stating, that good writing doesn't make it a good game on its own for me, because game has so many more elements to it that add up to overall experience. I will also note, that there will be lots of references to Fallout games since these games have a lot on common and are very alike in many areas. Oh, and it's

Lets start by stating, that good writing doesn't make it a good game on its own for me, because game has so many more elements to it that add up to overall experience. I will also note, that there will be lots of references to Fallout games since these games have a lot on common and are very alike in many areas. Oh, and it's relatively bug free. I've had to reload only one quest.

Having that out of the way, lets start from good stuff, which is as I already said is just writing and its expression thru voice acting. It is very well done for the story as well for the character and voice acting is extremely good. The dialogues are well put together and there are so many options within them and ton of them are not quest related - you can talk about opinions, you can talk characters past, etc. It's just solid in every way and I don't think many people will be disappointed with the writing.

Now sadly, it's where the good thing end. I will start from least bad things and progress as different game aspects get worse and worse.

Role play is really bland for me. Sure you can shoot everyone you please and be done with that character, however - if you're solving matters in more civil ways - it all kinda falls apart because how easy is to pass all checks if you smartly place skill points and balance companions. You literally become god of all trades: lie - no problem, persuade - no problem, charm - no problem, use medical expertise - no problem, etc.. You pass the check for every single character trait and because of it, it doesn't feel like you are building a unique character and what's worse - with how the game and everything play out - game puts strong incentive to be all around character. For example, if you rush persuasion to 100, all you'll do is wasting skill points, because such high persuasion won't come into use until last parts of the game.

Then we have combat and gear. Armors and weapons are quite dull and boring for the most part. There is no excitement in finding basically anything. Then the gunplay is just barely okayish, shooting feedback and how guns sound are just mediocre at best and while time slow feels better and more interesting than VATS, rest of the gunplay is really worse than Fallout, especially worse than Fallout 4 - which is like 3 years old game by now. It's not the worst I've seen but definitely one of the worst in a game with 60€ price tag (I know you can get it on MS game pass, but the retail price is still 60€).

Now a bit about the quests. Some are great, most are good, but there are also typical fetch quests that lack any substance and any feeling of importance whatsoever and this is very disappointing honestly. It really does fill like filler content at times - it's like "oh, this area feels a bit empty in activities, lets throw in some generic quest to fill this gap" and this really distracts from otherwise great writing and good story progression.

Finally we a arrive at graphics and overall - it looks dated, very on budget and rather bland in general. Now the best in all of it are settlements, some look pretty good and the building interiors look alright. But boy, when you go outside into wilds (or how do I call it) - it's nearly dreadful. It literally feels like No Man's Sky - from terrain, thru vegetation to animals. Especially animals are so ridiculously bad, almost like those toys you people buy to swimming pool (funny looking purple reptile and similar nonsense). It's just bad and it gets even worse with the extreme color palettes - on one side it's very tiresome on your eyes because of extreme levels of saturation and on the other side it blends everything - especially humanoid enemies. And if that's not enough - with how mediocre and dated it looks from graphics perspective - it also has some severe performance issues - from certain areas heavily tanking your average fps by significant margins to occasional stutters on any hardware (even top end PCs) and in some rarer cases persistent micro-stutter.

Summing up - if you can ignore most of the game aspects quality and are able to focus purely on writing - go and buy it, but if you value all game aspects being on pretty good level - you may be very disappointed, because it's just not that good as some praise it to be. Also, I feel like this game lacks unique identity, because too many times it just feels way "too Fallout". 6/10 is top I can give and even that is pretty generous with all the critique I've put up.

Its just amazing in every way, it should remind me a lot of Fallout: New Vegas but the game does a lot of things that are good, the companions are wonderful and they feel alive, the weapons have a kick, the sound design is good but it could use more ambient sounds in wilderness, the story is just the cherry on top

To sum up this game with one word "bland" at no point do you feel cool or powerful just a boring joke character that everyone disrespects constantly. The story is poorly written and simple to follow the companions are all disrespectful towards the player character and there is no option to stand up for yourself you just have to agree with whatever idiotic thing they say. It isn't an RPG so much as it is a shooter on rails you have no choice.

The gameplay itself is inferior to Fallout 4 and Mass effect Andromeda (Yes worse than ME:A) you get about 20 hours of gameplay it tries to copy other games too much and falls flat (Fo4,ME:A,Borderlands)

The companions themselves make me just want to put them in an airlock and blast them into space. You seriously couldn't make a single companion that is likable? Even ME:A did this!

We need to face the facts. The Obsidian that made Fo:NV peaked with this achievement and has been dishing out slop ever since. Obsidian is dead.

The problem with this isn't that it is a bad game (far from it), but the fact that it failed to reach its true potential… or maybe the expectations were simply too high, because there's nothing here that anyone can point to and say that it is terrible. Sadly, there's almost nothing that's great either, apart from the role-playing element and the quality of writing. The gunplay? Ok. The exploration? Decent. The plot? Fine. The dominant feeling here is of a game that is good enough so that you won't hate it, but also not as good for it to be the flawless classic that it could definitely be - but again, that's probably those darn high expectations speaking, because flaws or no flaws, The Outer Worlds shouldn't be missing from any RPG collection.

An excellent effort from Obsidian, and though The Outer Worlds doesn’t surpass its predecessors by offering a world worth visiting over and over, the adventure it presents is more than worth the time spent.

Usually, a planet has just one or two settlements and a bit of wildlands to explore. But that’s for the best – instead of exploring miles of filler content, Outer Worlds keeps you moving from planet to planet, from one tense situation to another. [Issue#241, p.34]
