It's basically a Fallout game dashed with some Mass Effect flair. It's real decent. Must check for sure, but not necessarily a must have.

Opening the map has the same issue, it will sit there with a loading circle for many seconds before it shows up. The story is.. eh. There's a lack of conflict and urgency in the context of your character. You're just unfrozen and go around doing things for people. There's no big villain, no impending doom, etc. There is a main goal of unfreezing other people from your ship, but after 16 hours of playing so far, nobody else in the game world is trying to stop you, or even acts like they know about the quest to begin with.

edit: I've found a workaround for the technical issues: turn on vsync. apparently my framerate was too high for audio and textures to load properly, which of course makes absolutely no sense...

Something else thats annoying is if you kill someone that's part of a city and you don't know. tough **** Everyone in the city will start attacking you next time u go there, even if there were 0 witnesses to you killing that one random guy. The whole main questline is just so bad. Idk how to say it, it's very unclear on what it really is and it is just not captivating, modding weapons is lame too. Things you kill are either too easy or too ridiculously hard (like **** mantiqueens), no satisfaction in killing, most of the time you don't even need to kill you can just run past everything until they de-aggro. Nothing cool to collect really like bobble heads in fallout. A huge thing for me is how boring and unsatisfying lockpicking and hacking is. u just get a bunch of ''magpicks'' and if something needs like 5 magpicks to open, u use 5 and u just hold ''e'' for 5 seconds. super lame, no skill in it, no satisfaction.

TL;DR: -Not clear on where to go for quests or any specifics
-Mainquestline is boring, uncaptivating and just unclear, it doesn't make you wanna play it, but then exploration is also scuffed
-If you kill someone important in some random place, the big city that he comes from will just attack you on sight next time, even if they have no witnesses of you killing that person and you didnt even know he was part of that city.
-modding weapons and armor is pretty lame, the mods arent really that cool
-things are either too ez or too hard to kill, not satisfying at all
-nothing cool to collect like bobbleheads in fallout
-Lockpicking and hacking is so... goddamn... boring, its not like in fallout where it make it a bit entertaining, u just hold ''e'' for 5 secs until it opens
-lockpicking uses lots of ressources so u have to be picky but u dont really know if something is worth picking so that sucks
-companions die instantly constantly, u need to upgrade ur skills to make ur companions do any stupid thing which is just unfun
-i get this is post-apocalyptic but the map is just bland and distasteful
i just don't recommend at all, at least i used xbox gamepass to get it, bc buying wouldve been a waste of 70$. Very disappointed and I can tell they put a lot of effort, but all in the wrong things, like dialogue is cool but they spent too much time on that compared to other stuff that needed work. Waste of 16 hours

I think the game is good and fun to play but that's about it nothing really special or new for me. It doesn't introduce anything new/original but it uses a good formula and uses in a new context which is the space colonization. Although nothing new in terms of the gameplay or storytelling i quite like the world/universe building and actually would consider to play new games in the same universe.

I love Fallout 1, 2, New Vegas, and The Outer Worlds!
Good story. Fun dialogue. Fun combat. Interesting skills and perks. Amazing art and music....
It would be excellent if there are Traditional Chinese, 3rd person POV to switch, and more more content. ( More stories, more quests, maybe DLCs, or The Outer Worlds 2 )

I thoroughly enjoyed this game. It's a great mix of Fallout and Firefly. Could have used a little bit more development time to really flesh out some side-story content. I did pretty much everything in about 20 hours. Still, a good start. I'd love to see Microsoft really get behind it with money so Obsidian can take it to the next level.

    PROS:
    - Nice worldbuilding with retrofuturistic vibe.
    - Clever sneaking mechanics albeit too easy

    CONS:
    - The plot opens with a good premise but then spirals towards a really unsatysfying ending. The promise of "many endings" is just marketing; in fact you have 2 endings - goody-two-shoes one and stupid one.
    - 9/10 of games' guests are MMORPG-ish fetch quests that are boring and repeteable. We visit 3 planets to collect crap from monsters here for one quest -hm I thought colony is dying? Wouldn't the resources be scarce, including fuel? Hell no, our vessel is supposedly fueled by solar power because we can freely roam back and forth for peanuts.
    - Speaking of dying colony and peanuts - people are supposedly starving, but there's a ton of food lying around not to mention food vending machines on every corner. Kinda like in Fallout 3 when 180 years after the war there were stil full-stocked fridges and cartons of cigarettes in trash bins.
    - Combat is really simple and your main oponents would be canonfodder - "marauders" that are supposedly transformed humans (?) but now uncapable of normal speak and behavior. Still capable though of wielding specialized weapons including flamethrowers and full armor, capable of camping at every road nook in Monarch - without any financial aid and organization... yeah bro.. that adds up, I guess...
    - Humor is near to nonexistent; in fact its limited only to funny adverts and occasional sarcastic remarks by your ship's AI. There is no situational humour, no absurd, no slapstick, no witty remarks from your companions. Most of the game feel boring.
    - Companions themselves are also nothing special. Game tries hard to evoke sentiment for Normandy, where crew had often something meaningful to say between the missions. Here companions angage in mindless chatter about tv series and baseball games.
    - Fractions doesn't matter in this game. The attempt to adopt system from Fallout: New Vegas was a fiasco. You can have good rep with all the fractions in the end and let's say it doesn't change much.

To sum up, I wouldn't reccomend bothering with this game. In a hindsight I could play much older games, from which Outer Worlds draws inspiration and it would be definitely time better spend.

Honestly, it's boring. I was a big fan of Fallout 3 back in the day, less so Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 4, Fallout 76 didn't interest me. I jumped into this expecting a better version of FNV and I guess that's what this is, but the thing is - this game plays exactly like a game from 2008.

The combat is boring, enemy AI is as simple as see enemy>run towards in most direct route>attack. The AI perception is god-awful. I was sprinting around in full heavy gear and I could walk right up within 15 feet of an enemy without stealthing as long as they were facing the other way. Gun mechanics are bland and most combats are ended quickly with good aim, usually within seconds.

The NPCs are bland and boring, they simply stand around and wait for you to interact with them, completely ruining immersion. It's like something out of Morrowind!

The soundtrack is also boring, you'll basically be hearing long, slow drones repeating in the background constantly.

The story so far is uninteresting, I find myself avoiding interaction with NPCs in favour of wandering the wilderness and seeking out combat and loot. I was able to skip a portion of it by travelling a "dangerous" planet by foot to the other side, at least that was fun - finding loot 10 levels above my own.

Everything in this game feels like it was designed to be "safe" and to not take any risks. In other words, not to deviate from FNV in any significant way.

I got this game via game pass, but if I paid full retail for this game I would be mad. It's worth trying on game pass since it's so cheap but I cannot explicitly recommend it.

Except for Phineas Welles, there are really no memorable characters. Companions are meh, but you need them for skill checks, that give you... experience? Great. Ah, and invest i tech skills. Might sometimes get something usefull out of conversations.

But the thing, that really kills me is that no one... moves. They are always in the same place, no matter the time of the day. Breaks immersion.

And the choices. Will you support an corporation, or an idiot. A corporation, or a murderer. Corporation, or ... you get the idea. And why are all the planets the same? I mean, a bit different shade of stones, but the gravity is the same. Ship is static and boring. Cliche's like cannibals? Check.

If this game premiered 4 years ago, I would give it an 8/10. But today... games moved on.

Now for a good part. Lore is indeed fun and interesting. Characters, while bleak, have good stories to tell. It has some holes, however, it's enjoyable non the less. Guns and melee weapons are interesting, especially science weapons. Quests are okay, however mainly consist of - go fetch me something.

Overall - average. But if you just so happen to have windows gold subscription, you might just as well play it.

    -some decent humor sprinkled throughout
-INCREDIBLE amount of polish. I played 22 hours and didnt encounter a single bug, thats huge considering what a lot of the other AAA devs are pushing out nowadays.
-tons of side quests that aren't too grindy
-tons of loot to find, and upgrading to do
    -huge, awesome branching storyline

    Cons
-The main story is on the shorter side. You could probably complete it in maybe 10 hours, I chose a pretty mixed route and did all the side quests I came across. It took me about 22 hours.
-There are some things that break immersion. You can kill people right in front of your companions and they react, but only briefly. Immediately forgetting about it, and there's no dialogue options to discuss it with them after the fact.
-I wish they'd have made you go through more areas that were gripped heavier by the board, to make me feel their cruelty more. The first town is really the only one being super oppressed, the rest are either outside of board control or living happily.

Overall I would recommend this game to any who love polished RPGs. Especially the old Fallout games. If it is available to you, Game Pass is relatively cheap and it is available on that service.

There are a few things that I think could be improved. The ending feels like it comes too soon, like it finishes a lot of what I wanted to have played, instead its just telling me "and then these other things happened later". If this game has some epic DLCs that come later, perhaps that will help, but as it sits I just wish it went further into the story. Some other small things here and there also were not done to a "10" quality, but other than the story feeling suddenly ended, I could easily forgive any of the other little shortcomings I found here and there.

    PROS:
    - Fun gameplay
    - Humor (dialogues and writing)
    - Story's decent enough to keep the player entertained
    - Good and diverse companions with a character of their own

    CONS:
    - Outdated graphics: I mean it's the end of 2019, and the game looks much more like Fallout 3 than Red Dead Redemption 2. Let's face it, on the outside the game's dated right from the start. It's not a deal breaker, but all those generic faces and interiors get dull pretty quick.
    - Boring quests: most missions in The Outer Worlds are classic fetch-quests, and not of the good kind. Almost every mission seems to follow the same pattern: receive a quest, go somewhere to shoot things, come back withe quest item and/or knowledge. It gets old pretty damn quick, and if it wasn't for the fact that shooting stuff is actually quite entertaining, the game would be a drag.
    - Bad pacing: it's almost always the same; you come across a new area, you gather all the quests you can, then you solve them, and move on to another area. There is no grand scheme of things that would push you forward. It almost seems like a linear shooter with just a tinge of RPG, and that's a definite con. And it's all pretty slow.
    - Poor equipment and character options: this game will seem quite easy even for an average player. It doesn't matter what kind of character you create. The same goes for your equipment. You can use whichever armor and guns, it hardly matters. This ain't no Fallout.

IMO, The Outer Worlds got published a few years too late. Had it been competing with Borderlands 2, for example, it would have been a close call, but in 2019 it's just a pretty shallow action-RPG that only aspires to be a Fallout successor. In truth, though, it's much more an impostor. Wait for a sale, because it's not a bad game, just not one you NEED to play at the earliest convenience.

The game hit all the right spots for me and i am extremely happy for the genre. Great dialog system, choices do matter and above all everything is so well made considering the budget that makes you wonder what Obsidian would have made if they had more money. The only downhill are the graphics and the optimize which seems luck-luster.
Overall an enjoying game with high potentials for the sequel!

In my opinion the best RPG of the year. Dialogue system is as good as in Fallout New Vegas and for me it should be new Fallout. Outer Worlds reached my expectations and gave my marvellous experience in 2019.

Outer Worlds is an Open World RPG that balances REALLY well combat and game machanics, offers good dialog and an interesting, albeit not very unique, setting.
First let's talk about character creation and progression. It's really clear that a LOT of inspiration was taken from fallout games. There are skill points, perks, attributes and a background choice. There are three big differences between this process in Outer Worlds and other similar games. The first one is: Every stat, skill and background choice is clearly explained. Not like in most Bethesda games where there is just a vague explenation like "strenght increases your melee combat damage and carry capacity". Ok. But by how much? Or "perception makes you shoot better". Does perception gives me better acurracy, damage, or does it decrease gun spread? Second: Outer World goes into a lot of detail on how stats and skills affect your character, it is WAY easier to build the character you want. It is simplified without losing depth. This is not a complicated game, all skills have clear benefits and give you sepecial "mini-perks" every 20 points invested into it. You level up skills by group until a skill gets to level 50, then you have to invest points directly into it. That gives you the option to have a character that can do a multitude of tasks and gives you a LOT of choices on how to act on quests and problems, without giving you a complete useless character in combat Third: attributes, skills and perks have a REALLY big impact on how you play. They have meaningfull bonuses, if above average, and penalties, if below average. There is also a perk sistem, some perks are somewhat generic but some of them will change the way you'll play. Best of all, none of the perks are auto-includes, you'll have to think about what's better for you, depending on your playstyle. The combination of these three things makes creating a character simple, fast, satisfying and it doesn't punish you too much when you make "bad" choices leveling up, no min-maxing needed.
Combat: Well, it's the best combat a first person open world-bethesdalike RPG has. Guns are fun. They feel really good, from granade launchers to pistols. They have weight and good soundeffects. Melee feels way better than most first person RPGs, it'sl fun, but there is a lot of room to improve. That being said Outer Worlds melee it's WAY **** better than Skyrim's and all Bethesda Fallout games. Melee weapons feel like they pack a punch. In addition to that there is also bullet time, which makes shooting WAY more diverse and fun. It also gives some interesting options to melee characters.
Another very important mechanic is dodging. Dodging gives combat A LOT of depth, new ways to avoid attacks, new ways to aproach enemies and having mobility in a FPS is a BIG breath of fresh air. You don't just sit in your ass shoting from cover, ou just run up to your enemies with a big stick furiously pressing right-click. There are better and way more fun options. And considering that games like these usually hava a lot of bland, cookie cutter combat that feels way more like an afterthought than a core part of the game Outer Worlds shines on making combat fun.
Companions are just bullet sponges with passive perks for your squad, not a lot fun using them, but they can help. You can always go solo and gain bonuses for that!
Story and Setting: The setting is just Borderlands without the cartoon-like visuals, a grayer pallete and added capitalistic distopian theme. Some areas are dull, some are beautiful and some are average. It's not the game's biggest strength, but it's good enough. Grafics are average. Faces have way more expression than most open world games, this helps a lot with dialog.
The story is better than most of the open world games, choices don't matter a lot, it's a little too linear and short, but the dialog is awesome, companions have excelent character exploration, and good development. It feels a lot like what mass effect did with it's companion development. You go out, do quests for them, talk to them and that's it. It would be cool to have affection meters and a little conflict with your decisions by the companions, but the most important is there and is done really well.
About the humour. it's Blackadder in space. Snarky jokes and dumb people getting in dumb situations. A lot of the NPCs and characters act like stooges, but it's fun! Just don't go expecting a gloomy and serious game like Fallout 3, or a mix of gloomy and humour like Fallout New Vegas.
The last thing to add. The game is short compared to open worlds like Skyrim a and Fallout. But the content is more concentrated, there is way less downtime walking or doing other boring things and a lot of replayability.
If you like borderlands, the fallout series, mass effect series and snarky humour it's a game for you! If you want a serious game, with a serious story and grimdark characters don't even get close to Outer Worlds.

A very well made RPG, with a great world and story. The only problem was it's length. I felt that I couldn't get immersed in something that lasted less than 20 hours with all the additional content. I hope the next one (if there is a next one), will provide more playtime.

The Outer Worlds is sadly one of the most disappointing games I have played in recent years based on my expectations and the disconnect between the review score and my own experience.

First starting off with the positives:

+ The world is quite beautiful and aesthetically pleasing.
+ The game runs smoothly and has relatively low system requirements despite the good looking graphics
+ The game grants you a good amount of freedom in how you play the game and complete the story

Sadly these few positives don't make up for the glaring amount of negatives that haunt this game:

    - The story is a bad joke. You have a nice intro that peaks your interest and then for the next 20 hours you're basically doing fetch quests and go from A to B to C until the story is picked up again a few hours prior to the end when everything is hurriedly wrapped up.
    - Sadly the world you walk through is completely sterile. Even Fallout 3 had more surprising NPC interactions in the "open world" than this game. It's just a bunch of robot npcs that stand on their assigned spot for the entirety of the game and do nothing at all.
    - The entire game is basically based on the 15 year old KOTOR game design. You have cities seperated by loading screens and giant doors. You have "open worldy" zones which are a bit bigger and no longer separated by loading screens thanks to the advancements in technology. But there is no real discovering going on and there's still invisible walls limiting your movement to a core area.
    - If you know Obsidian's old work like KOTOR 2 , the "Captain + Crew + Spaceship" template makes you expect interesting characters, unexpected interactions as the story progresses and intruiging character side quests. There is exactly one interesting party member (Parvati) in your crew, the rest is devoid of intruige and just a gigiantic waste of space and time. Well, let's be generous and say 1.5 characters, because the cleaning robot Max was a nice companion to have, but he has no side quest.
    - The balancing of all aspects of this game is terrible: The Game is too easy, even on "Hard". You constantly feel overpowered like walking through the game in God Mode.
    - With the exception of the opening hour you always have too much money, ammo, lockpicking, medkits and hacking tools.
    - You receive so many attribute points that you won't miss a single dialogue skill check until late into the game which makes the entire system meaningless as you don't have to take any hard decisions. Even then a single quickload, a change of items with different stats and you'll be able to pass the check on the 2nd try in 9/10 cases
    - The skill tree is devoid of any interesting pieces. It's consists almost entirely of things like 10 points added on this attribute, 50Kg more weight carry, 20% more dmg here, cooldown reduction on that or a few more seconds in Bullettime. Basically its sole purpose is to make an already easy game even easier.
    - The item variety is poor, unimaginative and has been done better in games that are 15 years old.
    - Melee combat feels terrible and ranged is average at best.
    - Controls feel floaty and unrealistic. Not state of the art at all.
    - The highly acclaimed dialogue is not outstanding at all. After a dozen hours when I realised nothing of interest is being said in 95% of text I found myself pressing space bar to skip the voice acting and just skim over the text. The one exception was Parvati who is the only amazingly voiceacted character and therefore enjoyable to listen to.
    - The text snippets are unimaginative and boring. I played "Control" a couple of months ago in which I read every piece of information. In The Outer Worlds I gave up on trying to find anything of interest after 10-12 hours of game time

There's probably more that I could list, but I can't bring myself to write anymore about my terrible experience. What a waste of time it was. For 10 hours this game makes you believe that there is another level of depth to it, which simply doesn't exist. In my case I didn't want to believe that an Obsidian RPG could be as bad and boring as this one, so I fell victim to the sunk cost fallacy and carried on. Sadly there is no pay-off, no magical turn-around, no new exciting gameplay mechanic. Just more of the same bad game.

Then there were Planescape: Torment and Icewind Dale. With emerging Bioware it was the golden age of RPG genre. Black Isle is long dead now, but people from Black Isle Studios, like Chris Avellone, has gained authority among RPG fans and found themselves in another projects, still making good games, like KOTOR 2 and Neverwinter Nights 2. Though I wasn't a big fan of "new Fallout" including NV and of the Pillars of Eternity I've expected The Outer Worlds with much anticipation. And was utterly disappointed.

The game stylistically reminds a lot about the good old Fallout 2 combined with NV with its retro-futurism and dark humor. Sometimes it reminds KOTOR 2, especially music score. And that's all the good things I can say about OW. Because as a story it is boring with flat, caricature characters and dull gameplay. Dialogues are pretty stupid, quests are trivial, characters are laughable and the plot is not involving. Moreover, you'll see a lot of modern Western propaganda here with its offensive politically correct Orwellian narrative in order to "educate" gamers. Honestly, I remember such rubbish ideological indoctrination through pop culture clearly enough from my childhood in the USSR to be fond by it. Thank you very much, but I've not volunteered to be used as Hong Weibing - enjoy your "cultural revolution" without my participation and not at the cost of my money. So if you are not Westerner and do not want to be insulted by their rotten ideology, if you value your intelligence, if you are looking for deep story, compelling characters, smart dialogues and engaging gameplay, than The Outer Worlds is certainly not for you. Better replay The Witcher 3 or play some JRPG.

As a long-time fan of Obsidian (and Fallout) games, I came into this with very high hopes given the generally very positive reviews, including several glowing ones. Boy was I disappointed.

The game really drops the ball on several key components of a great RPG, and in the end, seems like it was rushed out about two years too early.

The story is okay-ish; I'm not even bothered by the fact that "dystopian future run by corporations" is a bit of a cliche at this point. It's a big part of the zeitgeist of my generation and, let's face it, probably going to happen. The problem is that neither the overarching plot nor the side stories are developed at all. Several questlines that seem promising resolve themselves in one step by basically confronting somebody and deciding whether to kill them or not. Choices don't really seem to matter much; for example, you might pick one side over another on a certain planet, or reconcile them. But the planet doesn't change much either way, and in any event, there's no reason to ever go back to that planet to experience the "new" version, under new leadership etc. Part of the problem is that the game is less than 30 hours long, but still contains several major planets with numerous quests on each one. So each quest tends to be very short. They are also not interconnected in any meaningful or very satisfying way. The most involved quests are probably the companion quests, which basically involve planet- and fast-travel-point hopping to fetch this or that or talk to somebody, and your enjoyment of those will depend greatly on whether you like that companion.

The dialogue itself is kinda hit and miss, there are some clever and/or funny bits, but there are also some cringe-worthy lines that would never be spoken by a real human being. I may be being a bit harsh here, but again it seems disjointed and rushed, even if there is some good writing to be found in spots.

Another key RPG component is player progression, and the game misses pretty badly in this department. You never get new abilities (well, maybe with the exception of being able to hack robots, which I never used). Basically everything is a passive upgrade. I never felt more powerful on level-up; it's more like bumping up the numbers to be able to pass more skill checks. Never felt like I needed to just get two more levels for some sweet, fun ability. Boring. Also, you can basically put plenty of points into everything, unless you want to be great at both melee and ranged weapons (I went ranged).

In a similar vein, there are no classes and very few possibilities for different builds. I went conversation-and-tech-skill heavy and still had plenty of points to put into guns. I could do a second run as melee bu that would be the only substantial difference, and the thought of doing the whole game as only melee is...not enticing. You would think there might be a stealthy build, but not really. Someone else might have a different experience, but the levels are just not designed like Deus Ex or Dishonored, with vents you can crawl through or alarms or traps you can shut off. Although I didn't try particularly hard to be stealthy, after a few failed attempts, it really seemed like the game was designed with "guns blazing" in mind. As a result, replayability is very low, unless you wanted to do something like a "kill literally everyone" run.

Combat is ok, in the exact same way that combat from Fallout 3, 4 and New Vegas is ok. The shooting is not as good as a true shooter, nor does it allow you to use and customize extra abilities like, for example, Mass Effect.

Crafting and itemization is also only ok. On the plus side, you can change the damage type of any weapon you find, which makes for some nice freedom and interesting combinations. There are also a good number of weapon types, and most seem effective. However, most of the other crafting you can do just makes the weapons or armor slightly better. Also, you have access to almost every weapon type very early, and then later you just get "Shotgun 2" or "Assault Rifle 2."

Finally, while I liked the art design, the graphics are very dated from a technical standpoint. Like 2011 kind of dated. Something like Borderlands 3 gets away with that (also on the Unreal Engine) by going full out cartoony, but Outer Worlds still tries to look semi-realistic. Notably, fabrics on characters' clothing look great in conversation closeups, but environments look very 2011.

Anyhow, while the game is decent enough for a single run through, especially if you go in with low expectations, nearly every aspect of the game seems half-baked and could have used a LOT more time in development. It's like they took the skeleton of a game that should have covered 90 hours and tried to fill it with 30 hours worth of content.

The action in the game was sub-par, the gear was uninspired and the crafting was tedious and silly. The setting and story were nice, and I loved the environments. Here's hoping for a pirate-free Pillars 3. Expand

One of the better games I have played recently.
But giving 10/10 is too much in my eyes, while the game is good I wouldn't rate it so high for few reasons.
-Areas felt empty. Some were worse than other. -Leveling some skills is waste of points (Basically level up all the skills that help in dialogue since combat skills don't affect the gameplay much) -A lot of useless perks -Story

    -A lot of useless perks
-Story was OK, but like a lot of games it was predictable
-I hated the sections where you used the holo-disguise
-Quite a bit of loading screens, but since my PC is a powerhouse it wasn't that big of a deal for me.
-And few random crashes, the worst offender was in the last mission of the game, went inside the designated area via "sneaky" route and *buff*crash. It continued to happen until I went to YT and was guided to use another door. (Seems to be a bug from a month ago)

    What would I like to see if there is another Outer Worlds;
    -Balancing of the combat
    -Removal of the holo-disguise
    -Less loading screens
    -Areas with more meaning
-And more interaction possibilities with your companions, outside of the "companion" missions the only interaction was between other companions.

    - Good (not bad) story

    - I found some critical bugs, but i forgive it since there is no any good games (* of this type) on the market for today.

    It's an okay-ish game.
Nothing shines throught the 30 or so hours you'll need to get to the ending (doing every side quest you can).

Some mechanics, like pickpocketing, are really underutilized in the game. At the point that i don't even get why they did put them in to begin with.
There are stealth section totally unbalanced by the fact that are braindead if you use the cloak and (almost) impossible if you don't.
Why doing them like that? IDK.

Companions are hit and miss, and their quest too.
    It's a shame tbh.

OST is great and so the space cowboy of the first half of the game.

The game's is really too easy.

Enemy and weapon variety is lackluster too. BUT science weapons are a nice inclusion to the game.

Dialogues are good and well written most of the time.
Plot is meh and falls apart if you start thinking to much about it.

It is still a decent RPG and even well polished for obsidian standard.
I'd recomend it to non fan of the genre.
It is a lot recomended to everyone that is looking for an rpg for first time players of the genre tho.

Let us talk about how clumsy and unsatisfying character creation is. The bonuses of attributes are bland and or illogical. Intelligence, for example, is oddly the most import attribute in terms of combat. The skill system is awful. There is a combination of too many skill points and not enough skills worth investing in. You cannot even start specializing until all of the skill of a group are at 50/100. Why delay specializing when that is the whole point of an RPG? Leveling up a skill to 20/40/60/80/100 unlocks a single effect. That is about as deep as the skill system ever goes. No special perks that have skill requirements. No skill trees. Nothing. Just boring "+x %" bonuses. You hardly unlock anything resembling a new ability. Some skills are useless. Hacking and lockpicking are not worth it because they are not necessary to complete quests, you will be tripping over resources by the time you are level 10, and the "loot" in the game is repetitive. Seak is not necessary since the AI is pants-on-head retarded and takes 5 seconds to spot you when you are 10 feet away. Dialogue skills are not worth it since high skill checks are extremely rare. The skills that are not useless are too powerful. Having a Science of at least 60 makes the game way too easy. Do the perks save the day? Absolutely not. Most are bland "+x%" effects that do nothing to change the nature of the game or add flavor to your character. In the end, it is extremely difficult to make a character that feels unique. Exploration? Not worth it in this game. You can level up your weapons past you character's level. There is no point in searching for cool weapons since you can make an overpowered rifle early in the game with little investment. There are barely any unique weapons and a whopping 5 science weapons... like seriously... only 5. The final nail in the RPG coffin is the utter lack of important choices. For example, it is far too easy to chose a path that makes all factions happy. Yawn. Boring.

Okay, so Outer Worlds is not a good RPG. Is it a good FPS? Not really. There is a complete lack of variety when it comes to weapons and armor. Another thing that kills the desire to explore. Even the names are lazy, just adding a 2.0 prefix before the original name. The enemy variety is lacking as well. Hardly any exotic creatures and all of the humanoid enemies look the same. So many areas have buildings with exterior or no interiors. The quests are dull.... even talking about the game feels like a chore.

Coming from such a respectful company it's sure to get a lot of 10's just from the anti-Bethesda crowd. I too love old Fallout games (especialy 2) and I despise what Bethesda did with the series.

And yet, when playing Outer Worlds I couldn't help but think that I'd rather be playing Fallout 4 instead. Can't believe I just wrote that, I hated that game, but here we are. Outer Worlds ain't a bad RPG by any means - It's one of the most solid RPGs out there. The problem is that nothing, absolutely nothing about it feels exceptional, in the end making the game feel like a chore. Even the writing, the one thing I counted to be superb coming from the makers of the good Fallout games, feels like stale bread. Add "meh"-level gameplay, oversimplified player progression and some truly out-of-date technicals and you get the most lukewarm fun you can have in 2019, and this is the year we got Rage 2 for crying out loud.

If you want a good, deep RPG with perfect writing, Disco Elysium is a truly tranformative title for the entire genre. And let's not forget more standard (but much better than Outer Worlds) titles like Divinity: Original Sin 2, Wasteland 2, Atom RPG and the like. And if you want enjoyable FPP exploration with lite RPG elements, Fallout 4 is a much better choice in this regard. Or the Mass Effect series for an enjoyable space opera.

Not that you can't play The Outer Worlds instead and have some mediocre fun but... Why would you?

Similarly, it doesn't let you play at the end of the game, finishing in a rather disappointing ending after obvious black and white choices.

The last arcs of this not very interesting story feel insanely rushed, at the end of the day Obsidian could've done so much more, if only one character was as memorable as Kreia from KotOR 2 maybe this game could've had a little bit of more flavour. It is just an outcast of a game trying to be Fallout-esque, while achieving just very small fun moments and leaving you questioning why they didn't expand this more.

Outer Worlds is a passable but dated RPG. If you loved New Vegas, you will be in familiar territory here. From the art direction all the way down to the music it all feels so very Fallout 3 / Beth soft RPG. The throw back dated nature is almost certainly a design choice yet... even compared to stand out RPGs of yesteryear it doesn't fully stand up. From the art direction all the way down to the music it all feels so very Fallout 3 / Beth soft RPG. The throw back dated nature is almost certainly a design choice yet... even compared to stand out RPGs of yesteryear it doesn't fully stand up. If you dare to compare it to a more modern RPG like Assassins Creed Odyssey, the Outer Worlds shortcomings are as plain to see as the nose on your face.

At the core Outer Worlds is a very dialog heavy RPG. On the plus side of the equation, diverse outcomes can come about based on your decisions. There are plenty of different load outs and perks for your character so replay appeal could be pretty high . Trying the game with a character with low IQ and low dialog skills for instance would be an interesting experiment.

Graphically it's all a bit meh. The biome designs of the levels are all very video gamey. They don't feel like real places, more like stylized sets. Again this is most likely a design choice, the developers want this to be a retro style RPG. Sadly though the characters are kind of boring and forgettable. Because of this I'm finding myself dreading asking more questions of a character than absolutely necessary. The more I play the less I talk. This is bad news for a game that doubled down on dialog as a core mechanic.

Combat in all honesty kind of sucks. If you love bouncy floaty controls and gun play that lacks ooomph, you will love the combat. Sure, the combat is leaps and bounds better than say, Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines from 15 years ago. But VTMB was an infinitely more memorable and groundbreaking experience. VTMB had a great story with strongly designed characters who had interesting things to say. Outer worlds has little to none of those qualities. The combat is so lack luster you can see why dialog became a bigger part of the experience.

The loot system on hard mode is the most broken loot system I have ever seen. You will find countless vending machines and sales folk with no shortage of things to buy. But, you will never really need to buy or sell anything. I'm halfway through the game and I only purchased one or two things. I only even bought those because the plot wouldn't move forward without them.

It is entirely possible that playing on the hardest mode (super nova) is the way the good lord (or at least Obsidian) intended you to play this game. If I don't die of boredom on my first play through or if something changes in an amazing way I will play the game again and maybe regret giving the game only a 7.

I can only guess the Outer Worlds is getting such great reviews because 1. It's not made by Bethesda. 2. It's not entirely broken and 3. Because it's not made by Bethesda.

Some of the best dialogue and choices in gaming. Also probably the best companion system ever

This is a great RPG. The people who are rating it so low obviously were expecting something else other than a "Role Playing" game. It has great dialog, great characters, an interesting world and plot, and multiple ways to play through the game. It's weakest point is probably the gun play, but even that is pretty polished. Edit - After playing for a few more days I am dropping from a 10 to an 8. This is because I am just having a hard time staying "into it". In Fallout I always had a sense of wonder and mystery and couldn't wait to explore the wasteland.....some of that is lost in the Outer Worlds. Still a really solid game, just not deserving of the 10 I had originally had it pegged at. Expand

I really, really can not understand all that positive vibe towards this game. Based on Metacritic, most of the people just love it. Many people say that its's much better than bethesda's fallout (and I am not talking about 76). And the problem is, that its simply not. No, it's not even as good as New Vegas, Fallout 3 or Fallout 4.

And it falls short in every aspect. The combat is very simple and boring - nothing is a real threat to a player. Loot is plentiful, you wont need 99% of it (i am not kidding - you break apart or sell most of it), lock picks are extremely easy to find. Skill checks are joke. You can be jack of all trades from the very beginning of the game. Locations are small an repetitive. Maps try to look like there is a lot of stuff to do, but there really isn't. Quests match the overall quality of the game - they are dull, they are short and they lack content. Yes, most of the time there are multiple approaches to every quest, but it just doesn't feel rewarding to complete any of them - it's as easy as to choose different dialogue option.
The only decent part is writing, at least for a "fallout" game - its interesting to read and easy to follow. But its's not enough to be an RPG, its not even enough to be a game in most common sense - its just a visual novel, with no gameplay value. And that is really sad.

Can I just have a new fallout game, or do I have to replay the first one yet another time?

I am really surprised by negative scores. I am a big fallout fan and this game is solid fallout without all unnecessary crap.
    BUT...
the game gave my headache and made me motion sick for some reason. I turned off some options and it was better but still lurking. I find it weird. Maybe I am just allergic to huge amounts of estrogen- game is full of it. Most of the engineers are women.

They even put Queen Zoe in the game (-1 to score for that).

I thought this game somewhere near mediocre until I saw the praise being heaped upon it. Only after realizing how much that made my blood boil did I realize that this isn't a good enough game to be mediocre. In a vacuum this game is fun, maybe it would even be seen as great. It isn't in a vacuum however, it has to be compared to those games that isnt taken inspiration from. Its Fallout, but with boring combat, even less enemy variation, companions that miss their mark on connecting with you 9/10 times, a terrible loot system, almost no weapon variety, space travel that's done almost completely in the background, and many more small issues that add up but I'm not willing to list out here. This game doesn't deserve the praise it's getting and because of that I have to oppose it. Expand

Few games come out like this. Essentially glitch free, of which doesn't happen very often. This game allows one to live out their passion as a space traveling gunslinger. If you like shooting lasers into twisted mutated bug creatures from outer space, what are you waiting for? Give this game company your money. In this day and age of micro-transaction trash and pay to win duds, this game is the breath of fresh air. It is so rare to have a new intellectual property pack such a wonderful punch. If you are a fan of Star Wars, if you are a fan of Firefly or its movie Serenity this game is a must. I took my time with this title, exploring every area and every quest I came across and spent about 30 hours. For the average player I see somewhere in the ball park of 20 hours of game play. Fight the degradation of quality in games, and when a game like this comes along support it. Who knows how many more adventures we will get to have like this? Expand

It's not a New Vegas level, but it's a game for the RPG genre. The actual score is 8/10 but 10 points because the idiot gives 0.

The problem with this isn't that it is a bad game (far from it), but the fact that it failed to reach its true potential… or maybe the expectations were simply too high, because there's nothing here that anyone can point to and say that it is terrible. Sadly, there's almost nothing that's great either, apart from the role-playing element and the quality of writing. The gunplay? Ok. The exploration? Decent. The plot? Fine. The dominant feeling here is of a game that is good enough so that you won't hate it, but also not as good for it to be the flawless classic that it could definitely be - but again, that's probably those darn high expectations speaking, because flaws or no flaws, The Outer Worlds shouldn't be missing from any RPG collection.

An excellent effort from Obsidian, and though The Outer Worlds doesn’t surpass its predecessors by offering a world worth visiting over and over, the adventure it presents is more than worth the time spent.

Usually, a planet has just one or two settlements and a bit of wildlands to explore. But that’s for the best – instead of exploring miles of filler content, Outer Worlds keeps you moving from planet to planet, from one tense situation to another. [Issue#241, p.34]
