Cain and Boyarsky sadly give me no other choice but to give this game a bad rating. It is not even close to being average. I'd rather replay ELEX or even Fallout 4/Skyrim, which is really saying a lot. Sorry guys, get better writers and designers next time.

    - RPG Elements are bland and barely impact the game as my 9/100 "Long guns" character was melting everything on his way on the hard difficulty with a simple and very common assault rifle.

    - "Supernova" difficulty is a chore. Not challenging, just bad and near impossible to play with companions as they keep dying.

    - The quests are all alike, they feel like MMO stuff. Uninspired and forgettable.

    - The choices don't really have any consequences unless your choice is to murder every colonist. Then maybe...

Seriously, are you guys giving this one 10 just to prove a point to Bethesda because, I got to admit, even Skyrim and Fallout 4 did a lot things better than this one...

It is a nice gdr, nice and irreverent but not trivial, the political plots, often based on a critique of extreme capitalism, are well built, even if the choices to be made often respond and will be a dichotomy between being good or bad. The shooting system is good, nothing exceptional, but the possibility of slowing down time for critical hits on the joints, the variety of weapons, the special moves of the comrades and an absent lag is one of the best among the RPGs. The technical comparison is instead just enough, when you open the game for 30 seconds it lags and graphically seems to see a game released in 2012, moreover the faces of the various characters are almost all similar; all in all, however, it is forgivable given the low budget and however a valid impact of the whole. The dialogues are very well organized and dubbed, which manage (often even in the most minor missions) to let us get to the heart of the story and never let us get bored. Ultimately I would definitely recommend it despite certainly not lacking in flaws

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Это не Fallout New Vegas это we are happy few.

From the very start .. it feels more alive than .. lets say Fallout 4. Not because the "world" is alive - or the characters follow complex day/night routines .. no - just because they are well acted and complex characters.

Visuals are kind of nice .. but i reckon - they are a matter of taste - as they are cartoon-ish and lack a lot of detail in exchange for style.

The player is not held by the hand too much but left to do their thing - AND suffer the consequences!

Companions can die - permanently .. and somewhat quickly. But not having them (i play on Supernova) can be a challenge, too .. unless you focus really much on combat.

There are multiple ways to solve quests - most of the time ... including non violent ways (but not for every situation .. it still centers around combat!) - The crafting system is simple but OK, the weapons are ... varied but not outstanding.
When i compare it with - Fallout New Vegas and especially its DLCs ... it does NOT hold up. The story in this "universe" is much more conservative and does not come close to the story of "dead money" or "big empty"
But compared to games today .. it is positively a masterwork of story and character design.

A perfect game? No .. I am also not sure about re-playabilty ... but worth the price AND a full play-through? .. Any time!

You can commit mass murder at one end of the street and still have a conversation with people on the other end, provided your standing didn't change too much. It doesn't stand out as much from titles like Fallout 4 in that sense and it doesn't meet the expectations rave reviews may have given you.

Technically, it is good-looking, plays fairly fluently although the performance is underwhelming given the specs of the hardware I've played on, but certainly not terrible. It is very buggy however, in ways that are so obvious that it's clear this is yet another case of the deadline being more important than the quality.

Characters suddenly disappearing, but still shooting you from nowhere, until you move and they reappear. Characters stuck up to their waist in furniture. I've even had the game hang twice, with the entire system locked up for about 30 seconds before unfreezing. Weird mechanics like literally crouching in front of someone and robbing them blind, without a peep.

There's plenty to point out that should have been caught in play-testing and fixed before release, but we're once again tricked into paying $60 for the privilege of play-testing a "triple A" title.

It's not a bad game, but I regret paying full price - I should have waited for a final edition down the line and picked it up for half the price.

All the RPG elements are fairly deep. You can modify/repair/tinker weapons and armors. The acquisition of money and ammo is a must to play. I also focus half my skills to persuasion elements and it worked fairly well too. Exploration is fun and convenient but I would have wished a bit more planets. I didn't find the UI to be perfect, but acceptable. I give it a 82%. Truly enjoyed it and wished it would last 100 hours. Expand

I'm just here to say one thing: DON'T give the game a low rating or a ZERO because YOU DON'T AGREE with the GAME'S POLITICAL VIEWS. Judge the game by its CONTENT and now by its AGENDA which has NO EFFECT on GAMEPLAY or your ENJOYMENT of the game whatsoever. If you TRULY don't like the game, go ahead and give it a low rating.

The dialogues and character writing has clearly been a world of love so has been the world. A garishly colorful world accompanied by a great soundtrack that's only being hampered by its rather simplistic combat system which makes almost all combat a run-over. However this can be forgiven by the fact that it's clearly not a combat-centered game however if you're playing solely for the combat only then this iteration of the game isn't going to satisfy you. Although the world design is great it is clear that it is as open as any old Mass Effect game, meaning there is no endless exploration which in the end contributes to its rather shortness of the game of about 40 hrs. of game-play. Given that it was never developed or marketed AAA game I still have to commend Obsidian on showing us that old virtues of creating a good game that runs without a hitch and without telling me that I need to spend more money in order to get the amount of fun that I have hoped for when buying it. Because apart from seeing what other ending you could get (which you can do by searching on youtube anyway) there isn't much cause for you to replay the game all over. You just doing monotonous quests over and over, shooting mobs, waiting for some fresh and unexpected turn but suddenly the game ends. So, what was the point of this game at all? Well, it is all about corporations. Almost all quests, almost all terminals are telling the same old story about evil corporations and poor workers. This narrative is extremely straightforward and simply annoying by the end, makes me think that the script was written by a bunch of students between lessons. Also, i have never played the game with such disgusting men portraits. Almost every man in the game is either disgusting villain, ready to shoot you at the back, or a complete soyboy imbecile, with the stupidest dialogues ever. This adds to the immersion of giving you the freedom to choose how you want to play the game and how you want the story to end up.

The game does has a slight indie feel to it and it doesn't try to introduce anything new, but it does give a decent experience. I wouldn't advise buying it at its launch price of $60. It's really a $30 game at best. You can play it for dirt cheap with an Xbox Game Pass right now, so you might want to look into that while the offer still stands.

Comparatively, Prey (2017) felt like a better space shooter experience. It had more depth in pretty much every aspect. Despite a name like "The Outer Worlds", there wasn't really as much exploration as I expected. This game is well-rounded and solid, but that's all it is. Sadly, it's not a very long game either (you can get it done in two days), and there isn't much replay value.

Just finished the game and I must say this is the type of RPG ive been waiting for after the past 9 years of rushed garbage. A lot of people are going into this game comparing it to Fallout in terms of scale and I think if you do you are making a mistake.

The game is definitely more similar to Fallout: New Vegas than anything but it feels more like a hybrid of the original Mass Effect games in terms of length, Fallout: New Vegas in terms of dialog and choices and a bit of Bioshock with the world and combat.

The game might be a little short for some as it took around 25 hours for me to finish the game and probably could have been finished sub 15 if I simply ran through the main story. The side quests in the game however make up for this I feel as they are well written quests with fun objectives and not just tacked on. I personally would see the side quests as part of the main story and should not be avoided.

On my second play-through now and im starting to see the real talent the devs put into the story as there really are different ways to tackle a problem and they haven't made it an obvious good/evil choice like other RPGs. Choices are more grey and what choice you pick might be more related to your political beliefs rather than Option A: Feed the poor or Option B: Burn the orphanage down.

If you are a true RPG lover then you wont really have much to complain about as you get pretty much everything you want, if your in it for a looter shooter you will be dissapointed and if your expecting some kind of massive space opera with dozens of planets and over 1000 NPCs you may want to give this game a pass. What you get here is a well made RPG with heavy character options and replay value.

The plot, quests and writing is shallow, predictable, bland and boring. However if you care mainly about gameplay there is fun to be had in TOW, I guess. This game could have been much more but it's not even better than Fallout 4, the only things they did better with this game than Bethesda does with their games was make the game run better with barely any bugs and having skill checks of their own categories (Which barely matter in this game) but other than that, meh. People like to pretend that this game is 80+ hours long, but that only happens if alt tab and go do something else with your life or go around aimlessly doing absolutely nothing inside the game, which can be done in any game.

People made fun of Fallout 4's story for being "Find your son" but in TOW is "Find dimethyl sulfoxide" as part of one of the most uninteresting stories of any RPG that I've ever played. The skill checks barely matter, there are no big consequences to anything outside of killing people which makes their faction hostile, but other than that, certain decisions only made someone angry at me. The only "consequence" that I found was the big decision in the first planet, but I didn't really have to do anything there again so it didn't matter at all.

Companions don't seem to care about what you do unless you kill someone close to them and I don't even know if this applies to all of them. Their side quests are boring and one of them in particular is very cringy.

Character creation is pointless because you don't get to see your character outside the inventory menu or when you go idle. Equipment in general, from armor and weapons is lacking, all the corporate factions have the same exact uniforms, just in different colors, the non-corporate factions have one outfit with the exception of the Iconoclasts and the Marauders. Perks are very uninteresting, I ended up taking the more carrying capacity as soon as I could because nothing else seemed too interesting.

The world is so small and empty without any interesting in it whatsoever that Fallout 76 does a much better job at it. There's nothing interesting to find, no multiple side quests, no random encounters and locked rooms where I needed high lockpick to gain access to ended up having just a handful of bits, some consumables and maybe a weapon. NPCs are for the most part static, they don't have daily schedules and just stand in the same spot you find them, with a few here and there just moving from A to B and then maybe to C and then repeat. Some of the NPCs don't even acknowledge changes within their own faction.

There's a lot of loot but a lot of it is nothing but clutter, plenty of consumables that give you some buff for 30 seconds or 2 minutes, very short time that made me ignore 95% of the loot I found.

Many of the quests seem to be straight out of the MMORPG playbook, go here and kill this enemy, kill 10 of these, 3 of these and 1 of these, go here and click this, go there and click that, go fetch this and bring it to me/to someone else, etc and you get a thank you and here's some money for your troubles.

Combat is the same as every first person shooter ever, but with less weapon variety. Enemies are also lacking in variety, once you reach Monarch you would have seen all of them.

It took me around 31 hours to beat the game with the Phineas good ending without the use of fast travel and completing almost every quest in the game, perhaps I missed one or two but it wouldn't have given the game even another hour.

Some people have said that this is the perfect combination of Mass Effect and Fallout, but that's an insult to those franchises, even considering that they have Andromeda and 76.

Absolutely great writing, fun filled worlds. The maps are smaller, but packed with stuff. Only negatives are game length and not enough random missions found from exploration-- all the missions are well marked and very easy to complete. Great start to what hopefully becomes a sequel filled franchise. Thanks, Oblivion!

First off, I've read a lot of nonsense whining that "the game is too short", or it has "bad writing"... Yada yada, excuse excuse. To se the record straight, this game was advertised as a 20-30 hour narrative experience with a concise narrative. In terms of scope anyone expecting anything else was pretty stupid. In terms of what Obsidian ACTUALLY promised (and not this thing some people expect) vs what they actually delivered, Obsidian delivered on all cylinders. This game hearkens back to the classics, like KotOR 2 or FNV in a way that plays to the strengths and bolsters the legacy of this studio. This is a pure RPG experience.

It's just a shame the genre has of late been hijacked by low-RPGs that obsess over overly complex crafting systems, building systems and needlessly expansive (and often empty) open world's. For those of you who are sick of these generic titles, the Outer World's offers something that's so feels fresh despite many of its core elements been so old. It's a welcome return to classics that have been left behind in this age of all inclusive gaming, where every title must by some 100+ hour epic that constantly tries to one up the competition with pointless "innovation" upon pointless "innovation".

To summarize, no. The outer worlds is not Fallout 4. The Outer Worlds is not Mass Effect Andromeda. The Outer Worlds is the best of classic RPGs, that feels like it was ripped straight out of the genres golden ages and dropped right on your lap. If anything, this title should be a lesson to other devs. Sometimes less is more. Not every title HAS to reinvent the wheel. This game feels like it was made by people who love what they do. It feels like it was made by people making a game that they themselves would like to play. It has a heart, a soul. It even has a sense of humour. It is exactly what it was intended to be. If you don't like it, I'm truly sorry to say, this one's on you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's baffling to see how many people say that this game is better than Fallout 3, NV, or even 4. The game is pretty lackluster in every dimension. For instance, I thought that the story was pretty cool and was looking forward to meeting a revolutionary, anti-corporate forces (and you eventually do meet a large one in the form of the Iconoclasts), however, upon meeting them, I found their cause to be rather lackluster and uninspiring. The same is true of the world, the characters, the quests, the weapons and armor, etc. It's a real shame since the potential is DEFINITELY there, but it seems like Obsidian made a sort of half hearted attempt at remaking Fallout: NV rather than going full force like they did with Pillars of Eternity 2, of which you can certainly see their devotion to quality and expansiveness over the first one. The game also has NO THIRD person - unacceptable for any RPG of this type and I'm not buying their lame excuse of "we couldn't afford it."

Apparently, the game is very short, which is pretty disheartening as well. I'm on Monarch and I've read that this is really where the bulk of the game happens, yet this far in in ANY Fallout, and I'd have hardly scratched the surface. I had little hope for this game and thought from pretty much the day that it was announced that Obsidian should stick to isometric CRPGs, and the outcome of this game has really reinforced that view. I'm sure that they've made a good profit off of this game because the one thing that it did manage to do very successfully was create hype. Hopefully those profits will go into making a huge-budgeted Pillars of Eternity 3, since their work on that series compared to the Outer Worlds is miles apart.

The game plays excellent; there were no bugs, no filler quests (there is even a joke about this in the game), and the story was very engaging. I especially love the reflective surfaces everywhere. the art style is bright and colorful, old west meets sci fi. the faces also look really nice (though some are re used). the gunplay is fine, not really much depth, and the actual act of shooting a gun is sometimes a bit underwhelming, but the reloads are nice and science effects are cool. melee is also pretty fun, especially in stealth. the time dilation is super satisfying, especially when you drop a quicksave, slow time, jump, and fire a round straight between martin the moonman's eyes. but let's be real here, no one plays an obsidian rpg for combat or graphics, even if they're good. it's the writing that's the star of the show, and let me tell you, the writing in this game went up on stage, spat the fattest verse you ever did hear, gave the entire audience a grand each, and walked off stage like kanye. tim and leon know their stuff when it comes to putting pen to paper. not only is the lore rich, the dialogue is consistently hilarious, situations are interesting and often subversive, and the satire is scathing. the game balances tone better than any other. it's both absolutely hilarious while also being very poignant in how it portrays capitalism in the far reaches of space. not only that, but every character is a human being. some folk arent particularly kind, but there are aspects to practically every person that add a whole lot of nuance to the experience. speaking of human beings, the companions in this game are absolutely top notch. they absolutely feel like real people with real emotional struggles. taking my favourite companion to drinks because she was crying over a girl she liked was really sweet, and an experience I've never had in any game. those little moments are just so nice. it's just bloody nice. another thing that's nice (hows that for a segway?) are the many different ways to approach tasks. the game gives you a goal, and it let's you go buckwild with your character. you'll hardly ever be restricted from completing an objective, because if your skill is too low for one check, theres almost always several other paths, be it speech, engineering, science, whatever. unlike other more classic style rpgs, instead of locking you out of stuff for having a low skill level in one attribute, it gives you a friendly pat on the head and offers you another option, so you still have distinct playthroughs based on skill, but without screwing stuff up because your melee skill is bad or something, which always sucks. and finally, each zone is stuffed to the brim with secrets and little tidbits for adventurous players or those with good lockpick or hacking skills. so get exploring.

in conclusion, has life on earth got you down? upset with the current late stage capitalist hellscape we currently live in? why not come on down to another late stage capitalist hellscape, except in this one, you re competent, and you wont get life in prison for commiting mass murder. explore halcyon today in the outer worlds.

I wasn't even particularly hyped for this game, I just wanted it to be more of Obsidian doing its thing, but this is so perfectly mediocre that I don't even know if I'm going to finish it.

You finish the tutorial area and then the plot grinds to a halt. The high point of New Vegas was the faction dynamics, but in The Outer Worlds you are just presented with the binary choice of Corporation X vs Locals, and it never does anything interesting with that conflict. There are no real consequences for your actions, either. As an example, I shot my companion's boss right in front of her and she decided that she had to stay with me to "protect the world from me". That was it, I never heard anything else from her about the matter. I wasn't even meaning to do an evil playthrough, I just got bored of the story and decided to start pushing the boundaries of what I could do. The answer: I just got a penalty to buying and selling stuff to a particular faction.

I got it on Xbox Gamepass for a dollar and I'm glad I didn't actually buy it, otherwise I'd probably have been much more disappointed. I recommend that you do the same.

The game itself just feels so mediocre and lacking of any real substance.

The graphics feel like 2015, not bad at all but oddly and everso slightly dated for a AAA game. The storyline is pretty typical and not really noteworthy. Your choices feel like they do nothing besides give a few extra lines of dialogue from your companions/NPCs. The gameplay, leveling, and crafting is about equal to that of Fallout 4, if not a tad worse. The entire time I'm playing I keep feeling like I was waiting for the intro to be done with so I can really start to get into the meat of this game. But there is no meat. It's maddenly frustrating to keep waiting for it to get good, because it teeters on the edge of good but just never delivers, and then the game is over and you're just left super disappointed.

The worst part is that there were such high expectations going into this game, yet it really doesn't deliver anything worth remembering. I also feel like the majority of these 10/10 reviews are just people so used to spoon fed garbage from EA and Bethesda that when a game with no microtransactions and which actually runs and is actually finished is released people overreact and jump for joy. That is the base line standard for games, not the goal. I can't recommend this game for full price at all, not even for half price. Maybe in a few years when it comes out on steam and there's a sale for 10 bucks and you've also got a weekend of time to kill and apparently have nothing better to do then go ahead and pick up the game, but until then don't bother.

I'm pretty happy with the story, characters and classic RPG elements in The Outer Worlds. Dialogue options are excellent, player agency isn't a facade (I'm looking at you FO4), and most interactions are entertaining. There is a bit of repetition when in the open areas, but that's a small negative in the overall polish and craftsmanship of a truly impressive space RPG.

    PROS:
+ Generally good artistic atmospheric graphics, was No Man's Skye-esque
+ Good use of skill checks in conversation
+ Varied item pickup, although most are useless
+ Side character development adds variety

    CONS:
    - Story is lacklustre for the most part, and conversation gets lengthy
    - Battle tactics are non-existent, with most enemies behaving the same way
    - Gunplay is very simple and not varied enough - the same few weapons exist but are 'Mk II' and 'Ultra' versions when you level up. There are no throwables.
    - Graphic textures are strange and fuzzy, although this might be the art style
    - Buildings on different planets are copy/pasted and they're all pretty similar and clinical
    - There's no incentive to loot houses/buildings as loot isn't important and there are no interesting discoveries which is what made exploring the open world of Fallout so appealing
    - RPG leveling is extremely basic
    - Game only lasted 16 hours including side quests, and there's no endgame continuation possible.

Overall, an average game that doesn't make any groundbreaking additions. It's a combo of FONV/Mass Effect, but not as good.

It certainly isn't perfect, but I do firmly believe the price of admission is worth it and companies that are trying to do things the right way deserve to be rewarded. It's sad that its come to this, with companies like EA, Take Two, and Ubisoft always scheming to milk every penny they can from the whales, but hopefully with good sales figures Obsidian and Microsoft will be willing to revisit The Outer Worlds with a big budget sequel.

If you guys like having all your games polluted with that money grubbing nonsense, go ahead and give this game a bad score. But I think you should stop being so entitled and reward Obsidian for building a PURE GAME that is just a game you buy. The business model of this game is exactly what it should be: purchase the game for 60 dollars and play it to your heart's content, with the company never bothering you to spend another dime. I will ALWAYS support developers with this business model and completely boycott any developer that pedals microtransactions, loot boxes or Day 1 DLC. I would give this same review of 10/10 if this game were bad, but it's not. The game is fantastic. I suppose it's a matter of taste, but I'm really, genuinely enjoying it. Also, I love that you get to kill Corporate Commanders in the game. That's Angry Joe's character for the greedy corporations, and you get to KILL THEM. Wonderful! This is a dream come true for anyone who has a clue about the games industry. You all need to vote this up, buy this game, and stop supporting nonsense that's out to exploit you like FIFA, NBA, Battlefront and Battlefront 2, etc. Otherwise you deserve what's comnig to you: a complete monopoly of games that have microtransactions that are necessary to pay to win or pay for convenience, games that release broken on launch day, and no alternatives. This is basically very boring single player only Borderlands that takes no chances and reuses RPG tropes that should have been retired AGES AGO! Looking at you Profile Picture Interactions. My god, what a mess. It says something about the state of RPGs if this gets such high praise.

This game is a pale shadow of Bioware/Obsidian greats like KotoR, Fallout NV or even Mass Effect. - Setting: very inconsistent, it starts out genuienly funny in a sarcastic/dark humor sort of way but then turns into a semi-serious sci-fi setting with some very shallow social commentary.

    - Setting: very inconsistent, it starts out genuienly funny in a sarcastic/dark humor sort of way but then turns into a semi-serious sci-fi setting with some very shallow social commentary. Corporations = BAD mmmkay?

    - Visuals/art direction is so hilariously bad you wouldn't believe it's an Unreal Engine 4 game. Character models/animations are straight from 2010, the colours are all burned out and there is a heavy post-process filter that makes it all blurry and washed out on to of assets simply being ugly.

    - Itemisation/character progression: as boring as it gets. There are maybe 4 or 5 basic weapon types and everything else is just better versions or different damage types. Damage types are simply annoying, you see an enemy of type X you have to use damage type Y. Add to that that light ammo weapons are pretty much useless and all you have to do is cycle between an assault rifle and an energy weapon. Weapon and armor mods are even more boring and can safely be ignored. I don't think I've ever used a consumable other than the healing thingies because they're all so worthless.

    - Combat: very basic first-person shooter with few very tactical options. 99% of the time you just mindlessly shoot the same 4-5 enemy types over and over.

    - Quests/choices: inconsequential. Quests are all go to a navpoint kill/fetch something. There was a point at the start of the game where a very kind/good character follows you and you can just walk in and murder her boss in cold blood and she will help you without batting an eye, then will randomly go "OMFG you psychopath what did you just do???"... but 10 seconds later she's like "lol nvm can I come with you pretty please?".

The game sometimes does things for you that you don't mean to. In particular there is a quest where you have to recover research data from an overrun research facility (fetch quests...) and you technically have a choice to keep it for yourself, but half of the dialog options will simply give it away to the NPC when you absolutely don't mean to.

In 2000s this game would be absolutely panned, but I guess compared to what goes for an RPG these days (cough cough Bethesda cough) you at least have some dialog choices and skill checks?

Feels like a good Fallout 3d game. But it is too linear and just too short. Feels like you get rushed through the game halfway through.

Flow of the story feels like Dragon Age 2. Very linear but your companions regularly want you to revisit old places.

From the get-go, there were no lies or surprises. I got exactly what the publisher promised, on DAY ONE!
I’m 6-hours into the game, and have only experienced TWO bugs. On one occasion I killed a Marauder and some of his body was stuck in the ground. I’ve also experienced a tiny amount of screen tearing.
Full disclaimer: I’m using a 6-year old Gaming PC, so the very fact that this game works so flawlessly and looks so incredibly beautiful is testament to their incredibly good coding and game design!
    AMD FX-8350, GTX1080, 16GB RAM.

The overall look, feel, story, and gameplay is satisfying. Yes, it doesn’t feel as content-crammed as a Fallout game, and doesn’t have the same degree of customization, but what they’ve produced is excellent. Any given day I’d favor a smaller polished game than a big unfinished glitchy mess.
Interactions with the characters mostly consists of standing still with a dialog exchange. Again, I’m only 6-hours in, but the dialog still feels meaningful and you have to make decisively TOUGH decisions. I love that!

It took about thirty minutes from hearing "Fallout-like game from the team that made New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity" to discovering it was on the Epic Games platform, then still saying "Shut up and take my money".

The game is your standard FPS romp with the ability to tactically slow down time to some degree in combat for a few seconds, which is explained in game as a side-effect from being thawed out after decades of cryo-sleep. This is set against a heavily-corporate-themed space western. (In this sole regard it is like Borderlands, ramped up. It works.) Over the course of the adventure, you'll experience other VERY not-quite-Fallout aspects. There's a companion system which lets you carry a couple of bullet sponges with you wherever you go. They all have backstories you can help them resolve for extra xp. There's stats, a perk system, inventory to juggle, locks to pick, machines to hack, and many, many conversations to blunder through morally ambiguous choices with dialogue trees. Let's be honest, there is nothing "ground breaking" about this game, but there are some interesting design choices.

In a curious repudiation of the current trend to have giant massive sandboxes with points of interest to discover and explore, there are instead smaller maps that are dense with content. Over the course of the game you visit more than a half dozen or so planets, moons, and stellar entities, but all of the play areas are only as big as they need to be to present the content you are expected to complete. One of the later maps is a very small sub-section of a city-- but nearly every other door leads to an encounter or is used in some side-quest or another. In short, there's a lot less frittering about the landscape in aimless wandering and more working on quests themselves.

Keeping true to its roots, you can also avoid a lot of pain simply by having adequate non-combat skills: being able to lie, persuade, and intimidate is just as useful as having a maximized weapon skill. Enemies can be avoided with enough stealth and hacking and lock-picking allows you to subvert otherwise harrowing encounters.

Consequently, since the game cuts out a lot of the fat, it's a significantly shorter run-through. I'm about 16 hours into the game itself, having completed 90% of the side-quests and optional missions I found. I've just passed "The Point of No Return", so I'm now up against what is presumably the last mission. The shortness works in its favor though, as if it were much longer, one would be prone to complain about the lack of monster, weapon, and armor diversity. You could level up to 30, but at 27 I've run into very few problems where a lack of skill points were preventing me from attempting something critical: you can bolster your skills via armor modifications and what companions you have tagging along.

If I had to do it over again (and I probably will at some point), I'd run it in hard mode. "Normal" was just a bit too easy. Ammo was always plentiful and I never felt as though I was particularly strapped for anything. As a result I never delved into the tinkering system to modify weapons, rarely used any weapon/armor enhancements, and never saw a need to use any of the endless piles of consumables that was dumped on me at every turn.

But it is fun? Yes. Where it shines is in the humor, the voice acting, the speedy combat. There's hidden secrets to explore and the trademark humor is spot on. Is it worth $60? No. I'd recommend it in the $30-$40 price point, but I have no regrets supporting this studio.

This is how you make a good open worlds action role-playing game. Good story and it seemed like choices actualy mattered. Runs perfectly fine on my half decent pc. The only reason I'm not giving it a 8/10 is because I had some bugs while looting resulting that some loot got lost before I could pick it up but thjs did not happen too often.

The game over-advertises its scope (many of the planets on the map can never be accessed, likely they chopped them from the game to sell as DLC later, and most buildings and NPCs can't be interacted with). Despite some funny conversations, is boring boring boring to play. I did finish it but the ending wasn't really an ending, more like the game just stopping (if anyone remembers how stunted F:NV's vanilla ending was, it's essentially like that).

Items are everywhere, but picking them up is boring because they're all essentially the same and none of them are useful.

The game is not open world. It is linear. You cannot progress to new areas until you complete stages in the main quest. The zones you progress to are hilariously small and are all carbon copies of each other (one large corporate town with a store, a clinic, a workshop, and a palace, with a few pointless buildings outside the town and a couple locations for quests to send you to). This is a linear game with backtracking for fetch quests.

    Fetch quests.
    Fetch quests.
    Fetch quests.

Even the main story is 99% fetch quests. In fact, the whole premise for the story is a fetch quest, and the game abruptly ends when you complete that fetch quest.

The combat is very barebones. If you get sent to fight anything, it'll be a group of 3-5 generic mobs that you've seen before, and then the quest is over and it's time to go back to the NPC. There is only one boss in the entire game.

The extensive character trait and skill choices make promises they can't keep. There's no point taking stealth because every quest just hands you a disguise that lets you walk, in plain sight, past guards and enemies. I had a stealth of 3/100 and still beat the game without killing anyone in cities (except those I explicitly chose to murder). I would say that with the exception of the dialogue and gun skills, none of the skills make a difference to gameplay at all.

Without the humor, this would be magnificently bland as a whole. The game seems to realize this because it injects goofy one-liners into every conversation to the point where I couldn't tell characters apart anymore. Everyone spoke with the same snarky voice, my character included.

This would be a decent game to pick up for $20 once there's a Complete Edition for 70% off, play for a weekend, then forget all about it. At its current price it's an absolute joke, and the worst Obsidian game I've played.

Honestly haven't been this disappointed in a Cain production in a while. Oh how the mighty hath fallen.

TL;DR: You dont have to bring your brain or heart along for this bland ride.

I couldn't find this game enjoyable. The gunplay felt uninspiring and added nothing new over Fallout games with little improvements, with guns so lacking in variety I had to question if there was even a person devoted to their creation.
I just found it boring as hell, I never would have thought that a game that was so similar to fallout games of the past, but being on a distant planet would be so boring to explore.
If this was Obsidian's answer to Bethesda's increasingly mediocre (at best) fallout series, I hope they (the IP's)both die out a quick death instead of flailing along taking away funds from players when it could go to more worthy games.

This game is overrated. The main problem is the fact that it is extremely shallow. The world in which the game is set actually has a lot of potential but sadly most of that potential isn't realized very well. In the aspect of depth it doesn't match up well with games like Fallout NV. You can still have fun, especially if you like the overall setting, which I think is executed fairly well. This game is overrated. The main problem is the fact that it is extremely shallow. The people calling this a good RPG are in my honest opinion - delusional. As a game I can get away with calling it average, as an RPG however I have to say it is complete garbage. People who praise this as a good RPG must have never actually played RPGs beside heaps of burning trash like Fallout 76.

Absolute best game I’ve played In years. Action RPG done right! After fallout being watered down i was super bummed about the direction the genre was going, however obsidian has done it again. The gun play and time dilation feels crisp, gorgeous worlds and exciting enemies. I look forward to getting lost in this game for hours.

Obsidian developed Fallout: New Vegas and this game unquestionably has similar aspects to F:NV but the comparisons are misleading. Core game design is very different. Unfortunately, not for the better.

First, the game is not open world. Each planet - and you are mislead that there are a dozen to explore when there are really just a few - is more like a hub or level and that hub/level is actually quite small. Furthermore, unlike F:NV, there is no desire to truly explore them. They are sparsely populated and there are no "empty" areas. Every location coincidentally has a place in your, or your companions', story-line. In contrast, in F:NV there are many homes that you can enter and where named NPC's reside but that... do nothing. They serve only to flesh out the world or add color. In TOW, literally most homes are inaccessible with convenient "Evicted" or "Quarantined" signs posted to explain away why you can't interact with them. As a result, the world doesn't feel like a real place or a place that you want to explore (not that these hub/levels actually could afford it anyway).

Persuasion matters, which is refreshing. But it's far too easy and OP. You can apply skill points to parent skills that govern child skills (e.g. Dialogue governs Persuasion, Lie, and Intimidate) and all child skills get leveled-up by placing points into the parent skill until the child is over level 50. in dialogue, you'll need one of the three child skills during discussions. You won't be sure which but only a couple skill checks, even towards the very end of the game, require these to be over 50. And, you can increase them another 15 percentage points with easy-to-find armor mods or using companions.

The game is far too easy on Normal difficulty. Period. Just to add to Gamespot's comments on this, your skill points are always ahead of curve so every Persuasion/Lie/Intimidate or Hack/Lockpick skill check is a breeze. And with combat being as easy as it is (more on that next) why not throw your skill points here?

Combat is repetitive and boring. The enemies aren't diverse (e.g. requiring shock on one enemy type, corrosive on another) so there is no need to vary your tactics. There may only be a half dozen enemy types in the entire game and aside for 1, their critical hit locations don't vary (i.e. aim for the head). It's sad then that loading screens display enemies their anatomies but that info doesn't matter. At all. Just pump 'em full of lead. Combat is so brain dead.

Lastly, faction points just don't matter. I've been caught stealing a dozen times, completed what felt like were significant faction quests (some of which were terminal to the faction) and yet nothing in the world noticeably changed. I could still come and go to all locations without any effect. F:NV actions actually felt more impactful to the world.

Ultimately, while this is from the dev's of F:NV and it takes aspects of that game (e.g. "VATS" slow-mo, RPG point progression) it's a much shallower game. The writing and story, while fine, aren't enough to justify purchasing this game or even spending your 25 hours playing it to 100% completion.

That's strange, but most of a times you speaking with women, there's so much women, it's like some sort of war has happened here and a lot of men died during it... And there's other similar strange... hints like this. i guess Obsidian lied about not having political agenda in their game

Dialog is well written, and provide lots of choice to the player. You always feel like you are in charge of your own path. However that's all that's great about this game. Here is a list of things I believe aren't that good or can be easily improved or fixed.

    1. No third-person camera.
If this is a game like Bioshock or CoD, I can understand why the game is first person only. But in a RPG game (which can you actually customize your character's face), no third-person camera is simply not acceptable. If you stand still for a moment, the game actually show your character in third-person view in idle animation, so why not allow us to play in that view too?

    2. Skill system way too simple
With Fallout's SPECIAL system I thought outer world's character system is either going to be as complex or at least unique. However skill system in this game feel so simplify to a point there is basically 3 option: melee, range, talk your way out. I can't believe they group all range weapon into one thing.

    3. Perk design like a mobile game
Just look at the perk page, and tell me this doesn't looks like a mobile game. And those perks doesn't provide you with any interesting game changing action or passive. Think about sandman, nerd rage, mystery stranger...Outer Worlds' Perk give you 25% head shot damage....+20 carry weight...

    4. Load Load Load
Go play GreedFall, and see what an small studio can do with Loading time, and look at Outer Worlds long and frequent loading screen is just too funny. The idea you have to go out a dungeon to the world map, and then load to your ship or another location is such a terrible design in 2019. If we kill/ finish the mission in a dungeon, we should be able to fast travel in the dungeon (unless the loading time is less than 2 seconds)

5 World is simply to simple
Many people talk about how great they feel when they first enter the Groundbreaker, however, when i first enter it the only feeling i have is this: This is a shopping district? where are the people?
Everywhere you go the world feel so empty, and I can understand that in New Vegas, but in Outer World? no. Why will they open 10 shops in a location where only 1 traveler are walking around? and that person is you.

    6 Color Choice
Personally the color in this game hurts my eyes. (maybe great for other players, but not me)

With all those complains, I still enjoy this game, with lots of the same reasons like everyone else. I just wish they can do better, and I know they can do better, so why not just do it?

The problem with this isn't that it is a bad game (far from it), but the fact that it failed to reach its true potential… or maybe the expectations were simply too high, because there's nothing here that anyone can point to and say that it is terrible. Sadly, there's almost nothing that's great either, apart from the role-playing element and the quality of writing. The gunplay? Ok. The exploration? Decent. The plot? Fine. The dominant feeling here is of a game that is good enough so that you won't hate it, but also not as good for it to be the flawless classic that it could definitely be - but again, that's probably those darn high expectations speaking, because flaws or no flaws, The Outer Worlds shouldn't be missing from any RPG collection.

An excellent effort from Obsidian, and though The Outer Worlds doesn’t surpass its predecessors by offering a world worth visiting over and over, the adventure it presents is more than worth the time spent.

Usually, a planet has just one or two settlements and a bit of wildlands to explore. But that’s for the best – instead of exploring miles of filler content, Outer Worlds keeps you moving from planet to planet, from one tense situation to another. [Issue#241, p.34]
