This was a great stand in waiting for something from Bethesda or CD. Had a lot of fun but I also really enjoyed New Vegas so it depends on the person.

How many times do I need to fish through desk drawers for scrap metal or blindly click through bloated dialogue options to get to a conclusion with no impact on anything? Too many times, Obsidian. I came ready and hoping to be surprised by anything that wasn't a watered-down version of Fallout, a stale point of reference to begin with. Everybody who touted this game as something new ought to feel pretty frickin stupid right about now. Expand

They are not really that engaging and I forgot that they were even there most of the time except when they chimed in with some comment during conversations.

Companions actually don't bring that much to the table and you will most likely choose your companions based on your play-style to boost the stats you need at a certain time.

Environments are pretty neat but maps are rather small and don't really have all that much on them.
Weapons are pretty meh and unfortunately most armors look exactly the same with just some color variations. As I've seen some people comment on the item list seemed to have been padded out with consumables and vendor items to fill out the rather lackluster weapon and armor selection.

There really is no point in going melee either considering that ranged weapons are so much better and unless you manage to sneak up on your enemies you can get killed rather quickly trying to fight in melee.

Overall though the game has a decent story, the game-play is solid and in this day and age that is high praise when compared to other games. Especially when you consider that most games released nowadays are a broken mess.

I understand both, but don't mistake this game for an RPG or even an "action RPG". It's a short looter shooter with laughable characters and a story that only really exists on paper. You might want to focus on the main story in absence smart, diverse side missions but beware: The game is then over in less than 15 hours. The ending is hasty, and dumber than Quake 2 and Crysis put together.

The leveling and progression system is not impactful/seems pointless/dont feel progress

I'll never understand why they didn't expand the Valentine noir detective into a separate game it would have been an immediate buy for me, love noir. It's certainly pretty to look at and has a decent story of a dystopian corporate space future, very much a marxist socialism loving theme we've seen since at least the Alien franchise. I would never personally be in any situation where my whole being was dependent absolutely, for long time periods, on a profit seeking "person" corporation/government and that includes all types of governments. Space would be one case, another submarines, airplanes, hospitals you name it. My biggest gripe is that it's not that big, there are only a few worlds but I suppose one of the big talking points is that it's not ponderously long game but to me FO4 wasn't that either, only jubisoft megagames like ac odyssey, later far crys etc would fit that description. Origins didn't even fit that, Just Cause games would if you are dull enough to play them past the main story, or at all really. People say it's very generic but that's just because it doesn't have the lineage of FO etc if they make sequel it would have that and be rated better. But yeah the story wasn't about characters it was about dystopian space corporations so characters are largely forgettable. These big devs are just neo-marxists, antichristians and purveyors of time wasting mind control products. You can see the SJW aspects in these types of games all over the place. Expand

Boring gameplay, this is a FPS with more or less the same system as New Vegas which was a poor FPS system then and its a worse one now, the AI is also basically useless. The game world is interesting but shallow, with about 20 hours of gameplay if you go to everything. And it's pretty technically bad, if this was a small indy studio I would be nicer to it. However, I didn't include "story" in that description, and that's where I was really let down. The game starts off strong but quickly deteriorates into something that lacks any feeling. It was obvious that choices were going to influence the game, but those choices were made about people I'd either just met 30 seconds before or about people whom I'd seen a handful of times in the game. To further ram home the disappointment, I never felt like choices were going to affect me as a character, and I was simply pulling the strings on something that I wasn't part of. The missions felt fairly uninspired, with side quests not feeling very significant to much of anything. Add on the fact that I somehow completely missed a companion character and the whole game seemed very clunky.

Combat was lackluster at best, and seemed more of an obstacle to quest requirements instead of something you could get involved in. I completely forgot about the time-dilation feature many times, and when I did it didn't serve much of a purpose at all. It just slows time and nothing else, but if you want to watch a reload animation while you get shot at half-speed then that's a great feature.

Thankfully the story was relatively short, because after a while I had a hard time starting the game up to just run through mindless quests. I finished it, however only to not have an unfinished game hovering over my head.

An "almost open world" game that has all the negatives of an open world game with none of the positives? Sounds awful and it is.
You really need to pick a design philosophy and stick with it, are you a railroad experience or open world? The environments in this game are laughable If you want to view this as open world but the risk taken to attempt a game with an open world feel without the scope and volume of content is admirable. Lets just chalk this up to a good old college try that failed shall we.

From a mission standpoint how does this semi open world actually effect things? Rather negatively I'm afraid. You spend a good majority of time walking from point a to point b and either gathering an item, killing a bad guy or talking to someone. Thats what this game boils down to, the trick with other games of this ilk, is that they manage to weave an interesting narrative that makes it worth it, this game fails to do that and in an attempt to maximise the sense of scale in its open areas will have you backtracking and running off over the same old ground time and time again criss crossing all over the place just to really try and give you that sense of "I'm in an open area". Let me tell you somthing, people don't want to see the same 1 mile square of territory for 15 hours of gameplay, this isn't 2001. Open worlds only really work in the exploration genre if you're exploring NEW areas.

Fallout and elderscrolls pull it off because you're in a pretty believable world, and are large enough that even when back tracking between locations you will always inevitably discover somthing new along the way. The maps are too small in this game to do that leaving the game with the worst parts of open world and none of its benefits.

As for the weapons and armour and general charecter design? Abysmal. It's just weird for the sake of being weird, ninety percent of the weapons and armour do not look appealing or cool in any way, they just look weird and contrived, almost rushed in their design, like yeah just slap some pipes on that bit, and a couple fins on that, add a bit of retro flair and a colour scheme thats a bit clashing a gaudy that makes no sense from a colour theory or pallete standpoint. This whole game looks like someone just chucked the contents of a toy box from the mid 90s into a blunderbuss and shot it onto the screen. WHAT am I looking at here?! Was there any design philosophy behind the aesthetics of this game? Don't even get me STARTED about that ridiculous moon head in this game, I love a bit of humour especially dark humour but it's really not as great as you think it is guys, I really get the feeling that everyone involved in this game was super proud of it but it's not funny or interesting "hur hur man have silly face and big head" fantastic, high fives all round guys, smh.

Then theres the choices and outcomes, it's pretty standard really, theres a good outcome and a bad outcome, side with a corporation that says and does ludicrously ridiculous things like expects people to live solely off canned fish that is poisoning people and won't allow its work force access to health care thus killing off its workforce it relies on to sustain itsself. Even the most basic of bi*ches wouldn't do this and the whole entire game is stuffed to the brim with contrived nonesense like this "hur hur corps bad guys" Yeah we know man, we know.

The outcomes of these missions have little impact on the world either, really getting tired of this illusion of choice and freedom in rpg's that hold your hand and have no actual consequences. The whole concept of choice in this game is like someone is letting you choose between two coridoors that ultimately lead to identical rooms except one room is blue and one is green. Who cares man, who actually cares, can we start implimenting choice in some actual impactful ways guys? please oph god please, I'm so sick of this song and dance it's actually depressing me.

This is the kind of game where you know it's going to be average as hell going into it and you really just don't even care when it inevitably is bad because I mean just look at it just sit back and let this one die guys this doesn't deserve to be given the chance to even have the dev team lie to themselves that this is a good game.

You really have to wonder what kind of brain dead individual thinks that this is a good game and managed to play it for more than ten hours.

Outer Worlds is set in a nightmarish, dystopian future where every quest is a fetch quest, and every enemy is exactly the same.

The various baddies are generic, limited in variety, and really don't add anything to the immersion. Corpses look the same even after looting their armor and clothing, which just adds to the antiquated gameplay feel. Although beautifully rendered, the environments are two-dimensional and repetitive. The first-person only player character, linear story, and separate, disconnected worlds are a huge disappointment for me as a long-time player of open-world third-person games like Skyrim and Fallout 4. Overall, the game is very short and feels very outdated. Expand

Please stop play video games and play a pen and paper rpg. Now for anyone still that believes that it is possible to create a decent rpg on pc. Then you don't really know what an rpg is, go and play baldur's gate and leave us alone.

    Now about Outer worlds.

    Leveling system.
You do stuff you get xp. As long as you use your skills (lockpicking, persuading etc) you get xp to level up. After you level up you choose to what skills you want to allocate your xp points.
Pretty simple stuff here. There are bonuses with one perk per 2 levels and 1 perk per flaw.
You can accept a flaw if you want while you are playing the game.
eg. you took fall damage too many times you can have the cripple flaw and get a bonus perk.

This way you can sort of roleplay if this is your thing but personally I find funny to roleplay on a video game.

    Dialogues:
The characters are colorful and full of charm in my opinion. Every character has something to say in their own perspective and give you a good look on what the world has become.
Skill play small role here as you can unlock shortcuts and benefits through intimidation, persuasion, or lie.

    Gameplay:
For me there are two parts in this game. You talk a lot and then you shoot a lot. The talking part is like a Bethesda game just a little more in depth. You can actually talk down to others and make your job harder or just not take a path the game is set to you. An example is that one of my companions asked me a favor and when we got there I didn't like the quest giver, I was negative to everything he said, in the end I shoot him on the head, killed his entire gang and left his base, simply because I hated him and I didn't want to do his dirty work for him.
It doesn't change much, but there are some choices here and there.

The shooting part is really well made us well. Depending on your skills there are different ways to fight, personally I didn't find it difficult, it was just fun. Your companions have different skills and there are synergies depending on which companion you choose to bring with you.

    Graphics:
The graphics are fine, if you don't like them, then you are the reason that games nowdays are **** It's better to have mediocore graphics and good gameplay than AAAAAAAA+++ graphics and garbage gameplay.

    Bugs:
I haven't had a single problem with the game.

    Level design:
Really nice and compact, instead of having a huge empty map to explore and find nothing at all. Outer worlds has places for you to see in a nice small compact map, divided with building and planets.

    The bottom-line:

The game is as good as it gets with the budget and time they had.

Is it an rpg? Yes, if you think rpgs are levels and skills. No, if you have played a real pen and paper rpg.

Does it worth the money? Definitely, if you like bethesda games (and you are not a crybaby who thinks it's better that anyone because you have played old schools rpgs) and have fun shooting stuff while having a some control on choices.

What's that? you played the game and you didn't liked it? Such life, this is how things work in this world, not everything is for everyone.

    But this is not.
This was advertised as a FPS/RPG that had at least a minimally deep trope but it all just came out as one of the most hypocritical and shallow plot argument that I've ever seen in any RPG game. It is filled with teeganer edgyness in what could actually be some valid points on their arguments of anticorporations or anti-anarcocapitalism, but then the game goes against itself bringing "cool edgy" anarchists who fight against capitalism, yo! And all that with the most shallow arguments ever, which are the ones coming from ignorance of people that confuse capitalism with anarco-capitalism and welfare state with socialism (or communism). Too bad the plot argument creator of this game clealy missed his science politics classes.
The FPS is also very weak - not only because it is clunky but also because there are less than 10 different kinds of guns and the general weapon upgrades are way too limited.

With all that edgyness and shallow arguments one can easily understand how blatantly weak is the plot.

And this game takes stuff like that to the extreme even - where they put a ridiculous amount of containers and lockboxes (almost all with just/mainly junk items) to rummage through.

I'm at the first decision of where to revert the power and the choices are both bad and unappealing. Making me lose interest in any of these missions/story lines. And the other side quests are so mundane that they are entirely unappealing as well. The storytelling isn't good enough to make you want to do those side quests, or even the main quest.

Plus, having to sort through all this gear seems like such a waste of time. If the majority of the game is rummaging through containers and then my inventory, reading stats to try to figure out what to sell, that is not a good use of my time. Especially after you've already played a game like that. One seems like enough.

The game doesn't even look good enough for it to be worth it. And so far, the weapons aren't fun to use either.

Modding and workbench is pretty complicated.

The setting of being on these other wild, unique planets in the future is appealing. But the quests and storyline, and even gameplay, get mundane really quickly.

Overall I would say it's like a really bad version of Mass Effect. It takes elements from a variety of other games, such as Borderlands and Dead Space, but has an increased amount of all the worst, most tedious and boring aspects, and a decreased amount of any of the appealing aspects.

Played since launch and the gameplay is just so bland and unfun! The combat is repetitive and meh... The gear system is stupid and just leads to me to using 3 guns the same as before but with a different name and I spent all my time on one planet getting lost and dying to mechs! I was one of the first 100 people to beat the game and I beat it on the same day in 9 hours using a speed run strat I made up! I hated the ending of we haven't heard from earth... Like we never asked and i didn't even know we were meant to be caring about earth because they never mentioned it. I found the companions to be unbearable and horrible except the girl at the start and the priest but then we get the weird moment in the engineering labs with her and I avoid that at all costs, because its just cringe.

Me and my friend played together and i hate that people keep mentioning FNV because they are nothing alike! If you have to keep mentioning a game that has nothing to do with this then you are grasping at straw! Obsidian didn't do much work for FNV, all the hard lifting was Bethesda and they just wrote a decent story and added some cool things to it! Mostly I only play FNV with mods, so the community is what made it. Most of the FNV team at obsidian is gone and they were during the hard times at obsidian during like 2012...can we just count this as a loss and go on and hope for a good TES Or Fallout Game? Like this is making borderline depressed just talking about it!

Full disclosure, I have only played the game through the first area but after having started multiple times I quickly find myself losing interest. Everything just felt completely "meh" and I was having a lot of "been there, done that" moments.

The combat is extremely limited and basic. You can shoot, you can do a little sidestep hop (which accomplishes nothing), you can slow down time for a few seconds, and there are some very basic stealth mechanics. Combat often devolves into frustratingly frantic affairs where you are often up against several enemies with half-baked AI (this includes your AI companions) and you just keep shooting until things are dead and mash the heal key when your HP falls low. Enemy groups are often oriented in a way in which a stealth approach isn't viable and you will be lucky to KO a single target before the group is alerted. The time slow mechanic is nice but very limited and rarely seemed to be useful.

Remember No Bark from FO:NV? Remember Mr. Fantastic? I never ran into ANY NPC that had half that amount of personality in Outer Worlds in the small time I could tolerate it. Some of the companions seemed like they could be interesting but I also personally prefer the lone wolf approach to these games so I didn't spend much time chatting with them.

Every aspect of this game is botched. Once you get past the hype, there is nothing that this game offers. Combat is too easy, skills don't matter, the story is painfully boring, you can beat the main quest in literally a couple of hours if you wanted to ignore the rest, etc.

But sooner or later you will start noticing that the game lacks content, although while gametime wise it can be a fine 30-40 hours or more, but there's really not much.
The game has like 10-15 generic NPC faces (what is slightly change by hair color and such), and maybe only some story related character's face can be remembered.
The goomd soon falls in the boring, because you meet with the same enemy, the same loot, the same buildinds, structures, the same animals on every planets, the loot is also starts to be boring because there are like 10 different gun and the rest is the same, just the name and properties differ.

It would be a good game, you can choose between the better and the worse side what is casual but at least you have a choice, but soon you will just do the missions for achievement or completion wise, not because you care. The planets are abandoned, plain, After a while you just jump from fast travel point to another to do fetch quests, watch loading screens half the time. The skill tree is lacking creativity. After choosing 2-3 perks i didn't care about it anymore because none of them made too much usefullness, and the fighting system is very weak, the AI is not soo bright.

I recommend it to those who likes discovering and adventures in places or just the Fallout feeling, but those who looks for complicated story, RPG it's not the game you are looking for.

Nine months later, I've given the game another chance, playing it through from beginning to end. It's more engaging and more satisfying than I had thought. I've come to appreciate that the story is modest in its scope and ambition, entirely self-contained (no sequel-bait here), and reasonably well crafted. I'm just not sure it will linger long in my memory.

The game mechanics, visual style, and exploration potential of the game are serviceable.

With this revision, I'm also changing my rating from 5/10 to 8/10. It's a good game, though I don't think it's a great one.
    _____________
    Previous review:

The best thing I can say about The Outer Worlds is that it is no less than a competently constructed RPG. The very worst I can say is that it is no more than a competently constructed RPG.

It looks okay, all the various mechanics work as well as they need to, but it somehow fails to engage the imagination. Eight hours in, I'm having trouble finding the motivation to continue.

There isn't one big reason for this, as far as I can tell, but a number of little things that are pushing me away, preventing any kind of immersion or emotional engagement:

    - the overall look of the game is flat and dull; it's not actually ugly, in that brownish-greenish New Vegas kind of way, just not very interesting;
    - related to this, the landscapes and buildings are small and spare, almost to the point of being simplistic; there's nothing here that calls me to explore, nothing to inspire wonder;
    - the style of the architecture, clothing, and technological devices is cute, but entirely derivative; it comes across as a strange mix of Bioshock Infinite and Firefly; the dining area on the Unreliable is a ringer for the dining area on Serenity, and - with all due respect to the voice-acting talents of Ashly Burch - the character of Parvati is essentially a discount Kaylee;
    - possibly major characters are introduced in off-hand and perfunctory ways, and we're given no reason to really care about them at all;
    - the story is a paint-by-the-numbers corporate-dystopia affair, even more broad and ham-handed in its satire than the Fallout franchise - or even the Borderlands franchise; again, there's little here that's novel or compelling or revelatory;
    - choices do seem to shape the story, but the writing is such that I never feel the weight of them, perhaps again because I'm given so little reason to care what happens to any of these people.

To weigh in on the inescapable comparison, I found Fallout 4 to be in many ways less competent in its execution than The Outer Worlds, but far, far more engaging. I happily poured hundreds of hours into romping around the Commonwealth, bugs and wonky mechanics and all, but I'll have to grit my teeth to get through 30 hours in the Halcyon Colony.

Exploring is almost non existent, only one or two planet is big enough to explore, but there are not secrets or anything really interesting to see out of the normal questing areas.

Campaign is good, Story goes very fast but is interesting enough, the characters are nice, but as everything goes so fast you really didn't know them to dept, maybe one or two of the companions. for most of NPC, you see them 1 or 2 times and that's it.

I really like the looks of the game, there is a good variety of weapons looks, even if many play the same. Armors not so much, the major part are just recolors, so there are like 2 armor models, some clothes and that's it. That really doesn't matter at the end because the game is mostly FPP so you never see your character, only in equipment window (And if you're using a helmet, you will never see his/her face or hair for the rest of the game).

As an RPG it lacks a lot, is too short, there's nothing to do outside of the main and some secondary quests (not much of them), replayability is very low, (maybe experience the two of the most different endings), and you will complete everything in 20-25 hours, including secondary quests and going unhurried.

So, i'm giving the game the score as an FPS guided with some nice story, is enjoyable, and very fun to play (Love the humor).

Story: the story is somewhat basic and what you would expect ......at first there is a lot of choice and directions the story can go based on your choices ( like how a good rpg should) how you treat your crew , who you help , who you kill , who you negotiate with ect ect , now for me i saved halcyon with phineas welles , nyoka and felix died on me in the final boss fight but the rest of the crew survived. the game has a slide show ending detailing how all of your decisions turned out in the long run ( much like fallout nv) for an rpg with branching story trees is a good move. over all i think the story is well written and paced , bogged down by some cliches here and there and some predictable quests but makes up for them by being mostly self aware and not afraid to poke fun at it self
    Story: 8.7/10

World building: honestly this is the best part of the game and this genre/style of game the world in the outer worlds is fantastic and mirrors our own so well. capitalism has run rampant in a place where starvation and feral wild life out to kill ya and then those who are so desperate they become raiders those who will kill you for a scrap of leather everything has a place in this world. you are a wild card and people treat you like one. you are just as much a part of this world as they are though but you aren't brain washed like the rest of the residents. every planet has its own ecosystem and human condition , terra 1 has frontier towns , a big city and secret labs , terra 2 is a lawless place and has very few people besides those who were abandoned there , or tartarus the prison planet , the world is so well thought out and everything down to what items are where seems to be thought of.
    World building: 10/10

Graphics: this game looks pretty good , im much less impressed by its graphics than i am the rest of the game. the art direction is good but the tech doesn't really keep up with it. with on exception , The sky textures no skys look better than the outer worlds they are truly beautiful. animations are stiff and reused a lot witch bugged me a little as it lessens the variety of the game and makes it feel cheap. it is nevertheless a game with visual character , its look stands out thanks to its art direction of retro futurism meets modern day capitalism
    Graphics:7.5/10

Gameplay: to play the game you will have to forgive it for a lot of clunk with everything else this game does right it is easy to forgive its bare bones copypasta combat. on supernova you need to use enough tactics to make it feel like a challenge but on easier difficulty it's a breeze to get through just point and click. the choices and dynamically changing story saves this game from being a bore all together. but its an obsidian RPG made in the same style as fallout and fallout is not known for its thrilling fps combat. is it better than new vegas , YES the studio has improved and that's all you really need to know any improvement should be praised . it just feels like the game gets in its own way sometimes
    Gameplay 6.8/10

Sound design : big disappointment here the voice acting for the companions and main characters are find but the rest is just good Enough , again better than new vegas but not really up to the industry standard. gun sounds are good though especially the plasmas or lazer guns but i think the music was forgettable i don't know any of the individual tracks even now thinking about it except for the final rush , but i do know the music always fit the mood and that in video games is important enough
    Sound design:6/10

    8.7+10+7.5+6.8+6=39
    395= 7.8/10

this game is very good for rpg players , for first person shooter players use to spectacle not so much , it is a welcome addition to my library of games. i enjoyed the game thoroughly even if i did forgive a lot of its flaws , flaws i think can be easily ironed out in the eventual sequel because it deserves one

Very shallow RPG and a bad shooter, marketed with the original Fallout team to lure old school players in a boring corridor RPG filled with American leftist pandering.

I was really excited about this game, as Fallout New Vegas and KOTOR 2, both from Obsidian, are two of my all-time favorite games. And boy was I disappointed! It is a poor imitation of New Vegas, in space. In bullet points:
    - The inventory system is horrible. Midway through the game I stopped swapping the weapons and armor of my character and those of the NPCs and I stopped opening any containers for loot. Also, every nook and corner in the game is full of loot containers, it is crazy.

    - The story is bland. You can still get a taste of the good writing Obsidian is known for, but the overall story so uninteresting and your protagonist is so lacking in background that you simply don't care. The NPCs were also mostly one-dimensional caricatures: the sweet, insecure engineer, the drunk boisterous hunter, the swashbuckler doctor and so on. There wasn't a single piece of dialog with them that interested me. Compare this to the NPC interaction on KOTOR 2 for instance.

    - The combat is in a CRPG for me very secondary, however I still found it extremely tedious here. You keep on fighting three types of enemies, they all have similar tactics, you only click the left mouse button....

    - The gameworld (physical interiors and exteriors plus politics, belief system etc.) is very shallow. Except for some colorful exteriors all of the graphics seemed to be copied from KOTOR. The socioeconomic and political structure is one-dimensional. All your decisions as the protagonist fall somewhere within this single dimension.

    - The abilities you and the NPCs obtain are, in my opinion, pretty much irrelevant to gameplay. I spent some points on speech skills early on, afterwards starting distributed them randomly. The perks are basically useless. I never used a single companion ability.

Overall, Obsidian simply repeated itself instead of coming with some innovative and new concepts, regarding storytelling, game design, role playing, player advancement etc. It is a pity that in 15 years they did not move the bar one bit.

But then somehow the game devolved into a never ending sequence of fetch quests, backtracks, and boring dialogue with characters I do not care about. The companions are reasonably well written, but I care so little about the locals it hurts. The combat is also really low quality. It is slow, floaty, lacks impact, and the AI is truly horrible. The level of immersion is also very low--inside a space ship where multiple people have referenced how dangerous it is to fire a gun? Well, go ahead and shoot at the giant window. Absolutely nothing happens. No explosive decompression, no gasps of horror, no reaction from the security force. After leveling up dialogue, I can talk my way out of every possible situation, until I can't, then the combat is bad. So I'm stuck either avoiding combat, in which case the game might as well be a novel, or I don't, and I slog through boring combat with no enemy variety or good AI. The one positive is that the hammer is kinda funny at first. I spent 40 bucks on this, and after 16 hours, I'm genuinely disappointed. Now, not all games need to innovate to be enjoyable, sure, but the mechanics are weak with no exceptions and the gameplay loops themselves simply aren't entertaining, let alone compelling. Character development is a joke. Collecting items has no purpose -- this diminishes the importance of exploration massively. Dialogs are an attempt at a literal joke that falls flat. The characters are just... bland. The story suffers from such a severe lack of [insert literally anything you would want from a game plot here]. There's more personality in a voiceless Rimworld pawn than you'll get from any character in TOW.

I might have enjoyed this when I was ten (the demographic I have to assume all the high scores are coming from) but this is not worth the time or money if you value either. I expected better from Obsidian, but now I'm going to pass on their games for a few years thanks to this profoundly unsatisfying release.

Defenders will excuse shortcomings on it having a lower budget than the big boys. First of all, Obsidian should be keenly aware of budgetary concerns by now, after decades of working with less than AAA budgets, and secondly, good low-budget games focus on their strengths and trim excess fat. The Outer Worlds simply fails to focus on anything. They overextended, they underdelivered, and everything about this game suffers as a result.

I'm not leaving a bad review out of spite or some misguided blind-faith loyalty to another company. I've followed Obsidian for years, back in the Black Isle days, through the Troika phase, all the way up until today. I've supported probably dozens of their games over the years because they delivered really enjoyable games more often than not. I wanted to enjoy this, I tried, but after 20 thoroughly disappointing hours I truly just feel that this game utterly fails to deliver on everything it set out to do.

I expected a game in the range of Fallout New Vegas and Mass Effect - Outer Worlds seemed to aim to target that action-RPG niché, which was left unsatisfied since Mass Effect 3.

I expected a game in the range of Fallout New Vegas and Mass Effect - Outer Worlds seemed to aim to target that action-RPG niché, which was left unsatisfied since Mass Effect 3.

The graphics are nice and colorful, the combat, for the most part, was fluent and without major problems. The voice acting (English) was decent enough, so the game had lots of potential to be very immersive.

    Immersion:
Sadly, this potential was not tapped into. The first city was probably the most fun in the entire game, with minor surprises, believable characters, and overall design. Over the course of the game, it deteriorated away to nothing, sadly. This is enhanced by the fact that the game has a very forgettable soundtrack.
The companions stayed flat and boring, of which only two of the six have a meaningful storyline, the same problems were repeated over and over again, and the most obvious solutions were always the best ones.

Even though the game wants to make you think that you have a choice, it really doesn't matter. To verify this, I killed the entire first town in a second playthrough right off the start, and it had virtually no impact on any of the following dialogs. Going so far as using the information you would've gotten from a character can still be used, even though I never talked to them.

This led to the fact that I had the deepest bond in the entire game was made with my weapons, which leads to:

    RPG Elements
The potential for your character customization at the start is great. You have a decent array of skills and perks. Perks are usually gained every couple levels. Sometimes you get the neat option to get a "flaw", a decrease in stats in certain situations for a bonus perk point, which was probably the most fun idea in the entire game, gameplaywise. Contrary to New Vegas or Mass effect, the new Dialogueoptions you get via skill points and level are very minor, and has the most effect on

    Combat:
As stated, the combat was fluent and solid for the most part. But it is very soured by the fact that there are only 5 different kinds of enemies, which all have the same ~5 subclasses. (Brawler, ranged fighter, support, Boss, etc.) - with only one major bossfight with unique mechanics in the entire game.

This makes combat really repetitive. And since you're "encouraged" by the tinkering tool, which gives you the option to enhance a weapon by pumping bits (the currency) into it, and the fact that you spend skillpoints to be better with certain weapons, you usually stick with very few weapons over the course of the game.

    Conclusion:
Overall, the game just feels unfinished. Even though I had my fair share of fun in certain situations, when I saw the ending credits, it moved nothing in me. From the start of the game until the very end nothing really changes, no big plot twists (Well they tried, obviously, it just left me uncaring).

If you really, really have a ME/Fallout itch, this is at least a placebo. It is playable, but dont expect to get the same kind of investment out of it.

The story is alright it's not complex at all, but I can't say much about it since I'm only 10 hours in the game. The music is pretty bland nothing really memorable, but other than music the sound design is really good, and the voice acting is phenomenal so far. The characters are great I love almost all of the companions I've encountered so far. That about sums up my thoughts, great game if you love RPG's definitely play this, especially if you have the Xbox game pass. Expand

I am extremely disappointed of optimization. It has very noticeable micro-stutter every 5-10 second. This makes this game totally unplayable as shooter. Also it crashes every 20-30 minutes so its Supernova mode is unplayable as well. Every time it crashes you have to start the quest from very beginning which annoys me as hell.

Do I have to mention that all of these happen on hi-end PC

Do I have to mention that all of these happen on hi-end PC and don't change even on lowest settings? So this is the answer why this game still isn't on Steam. There are reviews there.

Good story and game play. Character and the game world feels consistent and real. Great shooter RPG for a casual player like me.

Technically it is not a bad game. It has interesting graphics, a just not so mediocre story line and an above average game mechanics. Nothing is so good at its own, but the mixture is excellent. The guys clearly have talents.

My two biggest issues are the following:

    1. Sudden FPS drops, which are very annoying.

    2. The walking / fighting mechanics is seriously outdated. It is about 10 years old. You literally can not play the game after playing Far Cry 5-6, or Dying Light. This is a very big issue and it completely ruined the game for me. This is why I gave it a 6 score, and not 8.

I got this game on a sale. I had high hopes for it and then I started playing. The story, mechanics and almost everything feels bland. I do not know if it is me or the game. I just did not like it. It was like they had a good marketing team. That is my opinion so please be careful when buying this game.

    I thorougly enjoyed the game.
There are some issues with side missions. You can't pick more than one, like in TES. And if you want to finish everything, you are forced to be frolicking around to many times to be enjoyable.
I'm really hoping for sequel... Maybe it's not best choice, but it's spacer's choice.

One of the Best Games of all time (in my opinion). No matter how much you don't like or don't like fallout or Destiny, I guarantee you will most likely like this game. The PVP is amazing, on normal mode It deferentially isn't the hardest as in my 20+ hours in the game I only redid a few levels or areas, no not the boss level at the end with the head of the board. The PVP is similar to Destiny 2, I don't know about the first destiny as I've never played that before but the gunplay is fun. The storyline and dialogue is pretty good as it was made by the same people that made Fallout New Vegas. I like the aspect that you can use your skills as dialogue and that you can lie etc. To summarise the game, good fun game that's similar to Fallout 4 and Destiny 2 with great visuals and gives you an all-around fun time. The game was really good, but I felt it didn't take enough risks. Many of the choices aren't quite as substantial as they may seem. A lot of the armor and weapons are too repetitive, and it's almost as if the developers were too scared to take a chance, or maybe the development of the game was rushed. The only reason I'm giving this game an above average score is because if you are into story, this game definitely will give you one that will keep you at the edge of your seat. Expand

Boring, uninspired, and very very bland game. Most characters, and armor designs look virtually the same. From the short haired women, bandits, to the corporate security, to even your ship AI. The gunplay is awful, as well as the character building, little or no progression. They try WAY too hard to be funny with the writing. The entire 6 hours I spent in game feels like it was built on false expectations. I have played through New vegas, (even games like Fallout 4) and Borderlands, multiple times, with hundreds of hours in them. This isn't even mildly entertaining. Not worth your $60. Expand

The problem with this isn't that it is a bad game (far from it), but the fact that it failed to reach its true potential… or maybe the expectations were simply too high, because there's nothing here that anyone can point to and say that it is terrible. Sadly, there's almost nothing that's great either, apart from the role-playing element and the quality of writing. The gunplay? Ok. The exploration? Decent. The plot? Fine. The dominant feeling here is of a game that is good enough so that you won't hate it, but also not as good for it to be the flawless classic that it could definitely be - but again, that's probably those darn high expectations speaking, because flaws or no flaws, The Outer Worlds shouldn't be missing from any RPG collection.

An excellent effort from Obsidian, and though The Outer Worlds doesn’t surpass its predecessors by offering a world worth visiting over and over, the adventure it presents is more than worth the time spent.

Usually, a planet has just one or two settlements and a bit of wildlands to explore. But that’s for the best – instead of exploring miles of filler content, Outer Worlds keeps you moving from planet to planet, from one tense situation to another. [Issue#241, p.34]
