8/10 without mods, 11/10 with mods.
A true role-playing experience where you can get lost on a near endless string of exploring, questing, and doing whatever the heck you want to. Create a character to your liking and just have fun. The story is good, the combat is fun, the dialogue and quests are fantastic, but don't be afraid to get distracted and loose yourself by following a goat

When I got this game for x-mas in 2011, I did not leave my computer for a good 3 days. I played hundreds of hours in Skyrim, and thousands with modded Skyrim.

This is not Oblivion. This is not Morrowind. But I'll be damned if anyone can play this game without having fun. Expansions are overpriced, so get the legendary edition instead ;)

Quite possibly the best game I have ever played. I started the series with morrowind but have now finished every game in the series and I can tell you that this is the most hyped I have ever been for a game. The story is amazing and the rpg mechanics were revamped and updated for a new generation. The world is massive, the characters are memorable, overall the game is a truly amazing experience.

Skyrim is a masterpiece. It's one of my favourite games of all time even 4 years after release I'm still enjoying every second I spend in Skyrim. I hated myself for just playing Skyrim on ps3 as my fun was quadrupled when I got it on the PAC, mainly because of the modding community. I'll now talk about how good Skyrim is.

The Story The story in Skyrim isn't really talked about that much
Skyrim is a masterpiece.

The Story The story in Skyrim isn't really talked about that much because people tend to get side-tracked from Skyrim's story due to the huge open world of Skyrim. The plot of Skyrim is that u play as a prisoner who is about to be executed along with some other storm cloaks. However lucky for you a dragon attacks the city and kills nearly everyone in the city and destroys most of it. You and a member of the imperials escape though and the open world of Skyrim is then opened up to you. You then need to find out why the dragons are coming back and stop them. After doing a few quests you discover you are one of few people to be called a "Dragonborn" which is basically a person who slays dragons and absorb their souls. The story in my opinion is one of the let downs Skyrim has. I know I have seen this sort of plot before and it seems just boring. I didn't really care about why the dragons are coming back I just wanted to stop them. Thank god that the quests you're put on are better than the plot.

The characters Like most Bethesda games I don't particularly think that the characters really stood out. People just seem to be people. There isn't much else to say about it I didn't really care much about people I just thought they were people going about their business. The exception is actually the playable character. I seem to like the playable character more than most of the people living in Skyrim which is saying something as the main character is the only character that isn't given a personality. The personality is forged by the player. If they want their character to be a cold hearted murderer who works for the dark brotherhood they can make them be that, they want them to be the civil protector of Skyrim they can do that as well, if you want them to settle down have a family with a wife and kids and a house you can make them do that (Well with the hearthfire DLC)

Graphics and sfx The graphics in Skyrim are great I only wish my computer was able to handle the ultra graphics setting so I'll need to settle with high quality. However I do have a few complaints about the graphics. The graphics seem to make some parts of Skyrim particularly the snowy areas of Skyrim look rather drab and bland. I also thought they could have made the water look a bit better. In the end I decide to get mods to fix my problems so there now doesn't seem to be much to complain about graphics wise

The sound is fantastic. Sound changes depending on the scenery you're in you can listen in on other people's conversations if you're in towns you can even get quests if you listen to the conversations.

Enjoyment I really enjoyed my time in Skyrim and I still visit it every once in awhile. All quests seemed fun and some of the side quests seemed to have better plots than the actual main plot of Skyrim. I also seem to like the DLC plots more than the main plot of Skyrim.

I even had fun just running around exploring all of Skyrim

Final Verdict No matter weather you've played previous elder scrolls games before or you're not into open world games I recommend Skyrim to literally anyone I can find

Skyrim is a must buy, even more of a one if you get a deal on it, DLCs are also worth it too however I might wait till the Hearthfire DLC has a discount on it as it doesn't add as much as the Dawnguard or Dragonborn DLCs.

This is pretty amazing overall. You can create any kind of fantasy build imaginable and play however you want. Want to simply never finish the main quest? No problem, you'll still be busy for 100 hours.

Minor annoyances include a crappy difficulty slider (it only increases or decreases enemy health and damage by a percent, making certain builds like stealth archer obscenely powerful)

What I'll remember Skyrim for in the future is for having one of the most disapointing and unsatisfying endings I've seen so far. The engine, oh, the engine is so bad, when you experience the physics they've implemented (since Fallout 3, mind you) you'll scrap your head and think whether it's a joke or not. Launching the game smoothly, with no issues and crashes collides with being a mirracle. Graphics is cheap and without mods it looks like garbage, even for 2011.
Sadly, once again, the community had to repair the game instead of its devs. I hate Bethesda for that they're not giving their games the love they deserve. If you finally get over the **** Bethesda have left you with, after launching the game with dozens of mods and community patches, it can finaly be good looking, partly repaired, balanced, smooth and addictive. If you are willing to spend around 1-3 hours installing mods before playing the actual game - it's fine. Otherwise, give up.
Unfortunately, I'm here to rate the original, vanilla Skyrim, not moded one, and this one is sole garbage. Just don't.

Of course, it's Bethesda, so of course the AI is a little buggy, and some quests are messed up, but it still doesn't change the absolute perfectness of this game.

I could gush for hours about how beautiful and intricately designed the world is, how expansive the side quests are, and how rich the lore and setting is. But I'll spare you a massive wall of text.

To me what makes Skyrim so great, is that it's a game that releases you into a world to do whatever you want, whenever you want. The world is filled with all kinds of cool stuff to be found. Ancient ruins, huge cities, crime syndicates, warring armies, kings trying to maintain power, etc.

But what's even cooler than all this scripted stuff, is the unscripted stuff you can do. For instance, if you want to rob a store, you can go rob it. No quest or even UI required. Just pick the lock, walk inside, and take what you want. If you want to assassinate a character, you can track them through the city, follow them to some dark alley and knife them from behind in the dead of night. If you want to become a monster hunter, you can go out into the world and ravage giant camps, face off against powerful dragons, and hunt vampires through the caverns beneath Skyrim. Or maybe you want to be an Indiana Jones, you can scour the land searching for mysterious artifacts, temples, and ruins.

The game truly allows you to do it all. And if you get bored of running around making your own stories, Bethesda's got you covered. There are dozens of deep side questlines to keep you entertained that range everywhere from rebuilding a disgraced guild of thieves to tracking down an ancient Dwarven city rumored to have a forge capable of crafting weapons of incomprehensible power.

Skyrim is a masterpiece, a word that I don't use lightly. And that's without even considering the modding scene, which is among the best in gaming. I completed my first playthrough of it in 2022 and am shocked to report that, in my opinion, Skyrim is still better than many of the games that have been released since 2011. The fact that a game from 2011 is better than a game released in 2023 is baffling to me, and a true testament to how great the game actually is. Some might claim that Skyrim is great because of nostalgia, but I've only played it a handful of times in my life prior to getting it in 2022 and have very little nostalgia for it. It's just a great game, and still holds up well even 12 years after release. There's not a lot of games that have this kind of lifespan, and still continue to hold their own against newer games. As a result of this, and the truly incredible experience that Skyrim provides, I think it's easily deserving of a perfect score. 10/10

It is undeniable that the land of Skyrim is impressive to say the least. It is vast and yet densely packed with secrets to uncover. The epic atmosphere and richness of world building is unparalleled, and backed up by a lore that's had the time to manifest and grow over two decades, the world feels immersive and believable. That is where the praise for the fifth game in the Elder Scrolls series stops, however.

My problem with the game, is not one of technical issues and bugs; nor is it an issue with the infamous creation club (although these are both matters Bethesda shouldn't get away with). No, Skyrim's fatal flaw goes much deeper than that. In short, it is shallow. Over the course of the Elder Scrolls series, the games have become more and more watered down, to the point where they can longer call themselves RPG's. There is more to an RPG than dragons and a skill tree. in fact one my all time favourite RPG's, Fallout: New Vegas, has none of these things; and despite that it manages to be a true RPG in every sense of the word. Ultimately this comes down to the intensely real and eye-opening decisions you must make in your journey. Not only does it have four wildly different endings, but all throughout the world, there are moral questions that the player is asked to answer. This is where Skyrim falls short. There are no meaningful decisions at any point in the game, you are an all powerful protagonist, guided entirely by the chubby finger of fate; whether you like it or not.

To be clear I was age one on the release of Oblivion, my views are in no way tinted by rose glasses and I have no sense of nostalgia for these other games, whatsoever. In fact Skyrim was my first 'RPG' experience which is widely why I have so many hours on the game; I didn't know any better.

I don't expect the thrilling gameplay of a Soulsborne game (which Skyrim most definitely does not have). DnD did not become popular for its gameplay. It became popular because player could be anyone they wanted, and do anything they wanted. In Skyrim, though your character is nameless and voiceless, it still feels as though you are playing the person Todd Howard wants you to be.

Dragons are mainly an annoyance and aren't cool, combat is still unimproved vs it's predecessor Oblivion, and it's overall bad.

Bethesda does not know how to make fun games, unless you look at Fallout -- wait, what was that...? Fallout's best versions came from another studio? Just wow.

The graphics are very good. Character animations have been greatly improver over the Oblivion and now TPP is a viable alternative to FPP. Also the games runes for me smoother than Oblivion.

Bugs, bugs, bugs. Bethesda games are the buggiest games I have ever played. They games sell well, what are they doing with our money? Cant they invest more into their games? Into betatesting and fixing bugs? On release Skyrim would crush for me every 1-2 hours. Rebinding hotkeys resulted in loosing ability to drop items from my inventory and making items "favorite". There were many graphical bugs.

This game has much more in common with The Sims than with Baldur's gate or Fallout.

Much-hailed games like The Witcher 3 or Divinity: Original Sin 2 have tried to compete with it over the years, but cannot match Skyrim in its overall quality, its free-form gameplay, and its understanding of what a role-playing game should be about.

This is partly due to what it delivers: an overwhelming amount of content and activity, great variety in all things, strong atmosphere and immersiveness, rich setting and story design, and slick and intuitive gameplay.

The other part of what makes Skyrim so great, however, comes from what it (intentionally) leaves off: There are no obtrusive cinematics, and the character system is refreshingly simple and elegant without sacrificing any role-playing potential.

Skyrim is a feast for both role-playing newbies and veterans alike. If you have not played Skyrim yet, but are interested in fantasy and role-playing, you should definitely give it a go. It is not just the best (digital) RPG you can get but possibly also the game with the most content for a considerably small price.

However you have to consider that Skyrim is extremely mod-friendly and with some time spent on research and installation of mods the game gets 10 out of 10 easy. There's literally thousands of mods adding to the world and perfecting it in unimaginable ways or fixing whatever imbalance or poor choice may ill you in the vanilla game. For that Skyrim is definite must play. So far I am 150 hours in it and I am nowhere near finishing my play-through. One thing I must mention though. Skyrim uses old technology that forces limits on memory used and is very bad in utilizing multi-core CPUs. With some graphical enhancements the game gets very unstable because engine can't handle it even though your PC is completely up to it. All in all Skyrim when modded is one of THE best games of your life. Most characters are very 2-dimensional and a lot of voice acting is not convincing. There is also the usual lack of voice actors (kill a villain, then talk to quest giver who has same voice and tone). In many ways this game is not a big step up from Oblivion.
The terrible interface is built around the limits of consoles and their controllers. Level design is linear & restricted due to console hardware limitations (Xbox360 only has 500mb RAM).

The mod scene is very vibrant and there is a mod to improve on just about every weak aspect of the base game, but finding and installing 100 mods is very time consuming. Still, there is nothing quite like modding Skyrim - if you persevere through the initial setup you are rewarded with hundreds of additional hours of quest content, much of it to a higher standard than the base game.

So, vanilla Skyrim is decent, but not worthy of some of the hype. But add 100 mods and then you have something special.

There is so much exposition thrown at you that you will start to lose track of what's going on, and without any truly memorable set piece type quests to back them up, they remain nothing more than exposition. The world, though undeniably large, starts to blend together into an indistinguishable mish-mash of dungeons, forests, and towns. There are hundreds of NPCs, but just like the locations and quests, they are too many and too shallow. There are no branching dialogue trees; most characters will have 3 or 4 topics of conversation. Worst of all is hearing the same 10 or so voice actors spread across the hundreds of NPCs. The art is a mixed bag. The color palette is grey and drab, suitable for the Nordic environment, but it becomes an eyesore over time. There are some great looking environments, such as the dense forests and mountain vistas, however many areas look like they were hurriedly built, such as the northern coastline. The characters look as stiff as ever; both in their procedurally generated faces and their terrible animations... both Bethesda trademark. The music is uniformly excellent, though it can get repetitive hearing the same battle and town themes over and over. Don't get me wrong, there is fun to be had. Play the main quest line and a few of the faction quest lines, and you will get the best of what Skyrim has to offer. Delve any deeper and you will ultimately find a shallow experience devoid of any meaning. Expand

I first played this game after the last official patch. When I first launched it, I was in awe. The environments, the voice acting, the action, the pretty UI, the weather effects. I was so immersed and it felt amazing. However, about 15 or 20 hours later, things changed drastically.

I realized that the poor leveling system from oblivion seemed to come over to skyrim unchanged. Basically, the game gets more difficult in terms of combat (NPC's have more health and do more damage) as the player becomes more skilled in any of the skills available. Thus if you decide to enjoy yourself crafting some cool armour or playing with alchemy, you're going to get smashed with more powerful monsters (assuming you have a difficultly setting of expert or more). As a consequence I was motivated to NOT try all the cool skills out there and purely do whatever combat I had going (in my case melee). Also I basically had to drop archery for the same reason. That was lame.

The combat still is really bad. The spell system seems graphically a bit nicer, but I only did melee and ranged. When you hit NPCs with a sword, to quote some person, "its like hitting them with a wet fish." Your sword just goes through them with no response. There is a blocking ability, but I don't know its purpose because you take essentially the same damage anyway.

The AI still is dated (seems to be the same AI for the most part as Oblivion). Sure, a lot of NPCs have daily schedule where they go around doing stuff which is really cool. But often you'll see them walking into walls, and they look very robotic. Its still pretty immersive though, but those little blips you keep seeing really ruins it for you.

There's still the issue of quantity over quality. In Oblivion there was hundreds of dungeons, but they were so generic and after a few you probably avoided going in them. Its pretty similar for Skyrim. For the first few tens of hours, you might not notice, but you soon will. Some dungeons can be very unique though, and they can be very awesome.

At the beginning of the game you would notice a lot of politic stuff and that in the quests. That was really surprising and cool, but then the main quest line went more in the direction of "dragon born" which was kind of disappointing.

In summary, this game is a great RPG, maybe a bit too quantity over quality, and too many technical issues, and more of a game where you can see it had great potential but it wasn't reached. However its a pretty fantastic game with mods. When I was following this game, there was a lot of cool stuff that was supposed to be in Skyrim, but alas Skyrim was not the result. However there's a bunch of fairly decent gameplay mods that fix this and expand: combat mods that make combat interesting, making lighting real, survival mods, so forth. For me I really need immersion to enjoy this game, and the vanilla game doesn't really supply that and kind of breaks it periodically.

It has some flaws, foremost a missing golden thread. My motivation curve was a downward spiral, since progress became repetitive and pointless. Skills, equipment and even leveling becomes senseless at some point (far from endgame), since it´s possible to win every fight by using brainpower.
The world feels empty, grey and static, by the way. So many possibilities wasted...

A big world to discover, some nice hours of gameplay, but far from being a hypeworthy, shimmering gem of video game. So: some honest 7 of 10. Clearly above average, but not outstanding.

Then "Damn this is buggy as all hell and to think I waited as long as I did and it still NOT FIXED!" and I want to give it a 5. The visuals are stunning. The open world aspects are SO welcome as I love sandbox type of games. The immersion is great until you hit one of the numerous quest killing bugs. Perhaps the most central quest line, when you receive the greeting from the Grey Beards WILL NOT COMPLETE no matter how many times I try or do anything differently. I have watched goats floating in the air about 150 feet off the ground only to fall straight down and then start to roam around. But the voice acting good. The crafting is very fun. Re-playability, if you can tolerate the bugginess is high. I still find myself hopping into the game when I can because I do have fun with it. That is as long as I don't want to alt-tab from the game. When I come back in I get the double cursor bug with is WAY irritating. It is also SLOW to react at times and you can make the AI bug out pretty easily. With all of that said I can only give this an 8. Or should that be a 7. Or a 5. Oh no it should be a 10. And then there are the times when it turns into tedium... So 8 it is. Great potential, just not the best execution. Expand

I spent easily over 3000 hours playing this game, thanks to mods mostly, the world is amazing, thankfully the modding community makes up for bethesda's bland quest design. But hey they are amazing at world building. This game also gave birth to Enderal: Forgotten Stories, which was one of my favorite games of all time.

Hello! Ok this game has been out for a while now and i don't even know how i flicked to this page to read some past reviews of it, but after doing so i was so enraged i had to write my own.

First of all, let me make it abundantly clear, anyone who hasn't scored this game at least a 9/10 is either using a very badly made PC or they are regular users of grade A narcotics. That is all there is to it. On a good spec machine, the graphics are BREATHTAKING, especially some of the outdoor vistas. The various locations used throughout the game are all very atmospheric and the feeling of being immersed is complete.

Second of all, the level of detail and programming that has gone into this game puts any other software developer to shame. Bethesda game studios is one of the last great programming groups, and you only have to see the depth of this game and level of thought that has gone into it to see why. Its not just a game, this level of polish and detail only comes from a labour of love. You can tell the developers really wanted to make this game. Its better than any 10 other games currently out on the market, and whether that is a testament to the quality of Skyrim, or the degraded state of the game industry, i can't call it.

The fact remains, this game is awesome. If for some unknown reason you haven't ever played it yet, do so now and say goodbye to a good few joyful weeks.

Last point. I hear criticisms. Ok, when Skyrim was first released it did have some bad bugs and crashes. However that just shows how enormous the game is in my eyes, and that you can't hope to games test every bug out of a game so large. These bugs were very quickly fixed with a number of patches and the game is now bug free. The other criticism i hear is the minimum number of voice actors that were used.................really? You would mark and otherwise stupendous game down because they didnt use enough different voice actors??? Laughable. Some people just don't get it.

Even if you don't like this game because of the setting or the genre, anyone who tries to mark it down because they don't like it is simply refusing to acknowledge that its a great game. They personally just don't like it. I am sick of hearing references to Oblivion and Morrowind, people saying they were better. No they weren't. They were different, not better. Yes Morrowind was bigger, but it also had various faults that people seem to overlook constantly. Like Skyrim, when it was released it was also riddled with bugs. People are just never happy. I remember people used to slate Oblivion, saying Morrowind was much better. Yet now, apparently Oblivion is the best thing since sliced bread?

Bottom line, this game is awesome. Fact.

Sure, it's beautiful in the beginning but the game lacks creative design. A lot of potential but if the game would have had a better story, the game would improve enough for being called a RPG. Now it is a action free roaming sorta game. Bethesda's biggest mistake was the DLC's, the biggest money stealing DLC's ever. Dawnguard and Hearthfire should have been a part of the original Skyrim and Dragonborn was unfinished. Good game but still overrated. Expand

I must admit, I enjoyed the game heavily first playing it, the soundtrack was amazing, the new interface with the way everything is handled (like dual-wielding and magic spells). But as I played it more and more, things like the disappointing texture quality, or the repetition of the quests got me down. And when I finished the main quest, I didn't feel up to playing the game much more.
Compared to any other Elder scrolls I couldn't be anything but disappointed in this title, it's dumbed down to such an extent that it's more of a cruise than a challenge, there's a tonne more exploits than previous titles held, and most disappointing of all (in my opinion) is the removal of the class system. It's not only due to the little things like how you have to rest between every level up, but I feel that they've put too much fallout into this game, like the arrival of perks. I like being set onto one type of class, so I can focus on whatever I want, but the system they have here has you easily overcoming all odds, and eventually everyone becomes a super-mage. The faction-war side quest was anticlimactic and could've been improved much more, the way that no one recognized you or didn't care about your progression made the game feel lazy and dull. In fact the interaction with people has deteriorated so much over the course of the elder scrolls that we now have characters that you can't even talk with any more.
The PC port wasn't great, the menus were obviously meant for consoles and made going through anything a chore. But of course As Always there's a mod for that, I never had a game so dull on its own that it actually needed mods for me to be able to play it. Too bad there's no mods for a cheap difficulty setting that only increases the handicap of the player rather than making enemies more complex or more satisfying to defeat, it's like a combat is a grind until you finish the fight.
On the other hand Skyrim made a lot of nice additions to the franchise, like the ability to dual-wield, own a house that you can interact with, blacksmithing, a much better magic system, and a better combat system (that is still plagued with the way you have to just grind at the enemy rather than employing different skills and ways of fighting).
I hope the next elder scrolls has a much better story, progression, interaction, compatibility and a much more complex class system, and maybe smarter AI and less cheap-difficulty.

Unfortunately, Skyrim trips and falls on its own (most probably, to make the cool-sounding deadline of 11-11-11) and just before it reaches perfection as the ultimate specimen of its genre, it self-destructs in a crucial aspect of game design: the interface and the peripheral components (inventory, journal, map, etc)... but that is not to say that Skyrim is anything but a truly majestic, epic RPG that will suck you right in its cosmos.
