Absolute masterpiece. I bought Sekiro after playing Elden Ring, wondering if their other games are possibly as good as Elden Ring. Not in general, but in this context for sure. Sekiro beats Elden Ring in nearly every regard (that matters to me personally), with better controls, fast, but skillful combat, unique interesting bosses and refined difficulty - no, in this game you don't get to overlevel and cheese your way to the ending, this is actual "git gud" game :D. And this is not meant to be punishment to the player, this is actually what makes the game rewarding. The feeling after beating last boss in Sekiro and beating last boss in Elden Ring is incomparable. Even outside of this scope, where I mostly compare Sekiro to the latest From Software game, Sekiro still dominates. I played UNHEALTHY amount of games in my life and few I'd rate as high as this one. It's not very different from souls games hence From Software. Like any souls like games you have to forget everything you know and take one step at a time. Literately. And build up as you go. I like love how we are introduced to a new - hopefully - series game.

this game comes out from the same company and i didn't have any thing to play at the time really so i've decided to give it a shot plus it's about shinobis, samurais and **** ;)

of course i struggled a bit at first .. the first mini boss beat the crap out of me like 5 times then i restarted the game to take a better look at the tutorials .. and after realizing that the best way is to use deflects the game become much easier .. and now me .. the one who couldn't even beat the first boss in ds 3 completed this game in 3 days and i like it sooo much .. that satisfying feeling u get when u defeat a boss who kicked ur ass like 20 - 25 times is awesome

so i finished the game and immediately started new game plus .. and this time i'm a master of deflection xD .. the hardest boss took 2 tries for me to beat only 2 tries ... this is coming from me the noob who couldn't do **** in ds 3

maaan this game is awesome .. to me it's noob (referring to myself) friendly

I was disappointed when I was few hours in. I did not expect a Soulslike game but I expected another Fromsoftware-jewel. I liked Sekiro but it was below my expectations.

    Or so i have thought.

    Now I am loving Sekiro.

    Pros:
    + The game looks astounding
+ Atmospheric, especially mid - late game.
    + Great music
+ Important NPC's take a huge part to the story
+ Storytelling and Cutscenes are on point.
    + "Into the feels" moments
+ The areas are connected to each other and you can take different paths
+ World events depending on where you are story-wise (small and huge scale)
+ Lore through items, memories from bosses, eavesdropping, giving drinks to npc's
+ Rewards exploration but on a different manner than Soulsborne games.
+ (Main) Bosses are, even compared to Soulsborne, high quality.
+ Enemy variety is high + many have an interesting concept. They are fitting to the concept of the game and fit to the area they're in.
+ There are different endings and some of them need requirements. You are never forced upon an ending, you need to meet the requirements but you can also decide to go for another ending.
+ Fighting is quick, feels cool and rewards quick thinking, muscle memory and experimentation. *No, it's not just parrying.
+ Stealth is implemented but you are (almost) never forced to use it. It just can make things easier.
+ No matter how far you are in, you can still die to the first enemies.
+ Falling from cliffs or high ground doesn't instakill you - Yay
+ You can swim and it doesn't feel like ****

    Cons:
    - Sometimes feels unfair, especially in early game and at some minibosses.
    - For the most part, minibosses are just copied to other stages of the game.
    - Minibosses deal extremely high damage, yet have around 2 - 4 moves at their disposal which makes them hard and annoying at the beginning and a piece of cake after several hours experience.
    - Fogwalls till you kill the miniboss make this even worse
    - Some Minibosses require items to effectively kill them. These items are consumables, hard to aquire until late game and makes it very frustrating to die to them.
    - 2 Bosses who can literally 1 Shot you in NG+ and beyond
    - 3 and 4 Phases-bosses is too much
    - Terror ............
    - Own posture mechanic is weird. Gotta stand still or move around till own posture recovers. But most of the time it doesn't matter since enemies won't react properly after breaking your posture.
    - No weapon variety. I know shinobi's share a bond with their weapon blabla but I prefer having different weapons over historical accuracy.
    - the "stat system", idk how to call it but it feels unrewarding and unnecessary
    - For some very odd reason gotta hold a button to collect drops from enemies

    To sum it up:
Sekiro is different from Soulsborne games. Even if you love the series, it's still no safe bet that you like it. And that's fine, that's what a new IP is for. However, it shares Fromsoftware's DNA and at some point, you will compare it to Soulsborne.
Sekiro has improved on many levels but has also worsen on other levels. It's harder than Soulsborne games, sometimes due to artificially but most of the time due to the wide combat system.
I would compare the difficulty level of Sekiro to Bloodborne: Old Hunters DLC.
Minibosses are my biggest complaint but even there are few cool, unique and memorizable encounters.

    I highly recommend Sekiro.

The game was only hard when I tried to dodge enemy attacks. The combat is based on deflections & counter attacks. After successful deflections there's always time for counter attacks, even if it doesn't feel like it. The positives is the sword clashing system, the prosthetic tools, the story, the atmosphere, the world & its characters. The negatives of this game is that you can only equip 1 Combat Art, of which many cost Spirit Emblems & you only get max 20 & using something like the Ashina Cross (which does a ton of damage) means they'll be depleted in 10 hits against a boss, not to be refilled until the boss is down. Imagine if Bloodborne's trick weapons 2nd attack would cost QS bullets? It's a problem because Spirit Emblems is pretty rare & is needed for the prosthetic tools & late game bosses have 3 health bars. The game would be better if you could get different outfits & swords & if you could equip 2 Combat Arts IMO. Bosses use several Combat Arts in 1 battle but you can only use 1. Also, some Combat Arts like Floating Passage does less damage than regular hits. Expand

Yes it takes time to get used to the mechanics after being used to Dark Souls. Yes it is a difficult game, the boss fights can be very hard. There is a difficulty curve that you have to get over and there is a period of getting used to and understanding the game. Once you do though you start to love the game, the rhythm of the battles, the feeling of overcoming a boss, the aggression and adrenaline during a challenging fight. I love the line of "I'm good at dark souls but this game sucks cause I died like 20 times to a dumb boss", it's people expecting to be good at this game and getting frustrated when it's not a dark souls rehash. It's honestly their loss not giving this game the necessary amount of time. I'm glad this is not a dark souls rehash and what they have made. I usually never replay games, even if I love them, but this one is an exception. From Software has really raised the bar as a game company. Expand

Great game, these type of epic boss fights are the reason I play videogames.

I would not recommend it to casuals tough as it is sometimes super difficult, but the hardest fights are optional.

Biggest difference with dark souls, is that most enemies are human here instead of huge monsters, you will have to mostly parry instead of dodging, different playstyle.

The blocking and dodging are both really inconsistent. Even sneak attacks from above are really inconsistent too. Sometimes changing the FPS and Hz will impact timing things like that in games, so full disclosure I'm using 144hz with 120 FPS (both are locked to 60 by default). But one of the first main bosses is just ridiculous. I've died like 30 times to General Naomori Kawarada. Neither jumping or dodging or blocking consistently work on him.

I even watched a video of a guy showing a way to sneak up on him for an initial blow, but even with that it wasn't enough. And your character dies after 2 hits. After finally beating the guy it didn't feel good at all, it was just like "that was ****ing stupid". Then your character goes on to die more vs other people. I noped the **** out of there.

Dying, resurrecting, and fighting the same enemies again, is part of the game design. The game Sundered is also based around dying and resurrecting, yet I very much enjoyed that game. So I guess it's mostly the tediousness, technicality, unresponsiveness/inconsistency of the fights that's the problem. I enjoyed the combat style of games like Darksiders, but didn't find this type enjoyable. I ended up trying to avoid fighting as much as possible, but you can only go so far with that.

This game is only for people who want to be really patient with every enemy, hit narrow timings, throughout long and repetitive battles. You also have to collect items to strategically use during fights, and go out of your way to explore everywhere without a map, and either die a lot (which you get punished for) or watch a playthrough to learn the game, locations, items, strategies, etc.. There seems to be a lot of boss fights.

It seems necessary to watch a complete youtube playthrough or follow a written guide to even process through the storyline fully/correctly, and without extreme frustration. Watching the playthrough even more so reinforced my conclusion that this game is not fun to play.

The Dragonrot mechanic is stupid. It basically penalizes you for being bad at the game.

The loading screens with tips dismiss themselves, so if you have a fast PC you don't get to read them.

If you do play, I highly recommend using Phoenix Samurai Reshade mod, and FPSunlocker mod (PCgamingwiki).

I picked this up after playing a lot of Souls and initially found the game to be "too hard" putting the game away for many months. Fast forward and I'm on a second playing to the game. It has completely consumed my interest and become my favorite FromSoftware title to date.

So what changed with my second playthrough? My attention to in game mechanics and accepting parrying as the method of playstyle. This change completely transformed the so called "harder than souls" format. I also made an effort to slow down and look through the world environment and discover the advantages of using the right prosthetics. Put simply, I spent more time learning what Sekiro offered rather than trying to play it like Dark Souls. Some of the Boss fights that were impossible in my first playthrough I completed in two attempts. I actually find the game easier than souls now.

The lore is unreal in this game, I'm absolutely in love with the story of this game and investing in total immersion to Sekiro is what really starts to propel it forward beyond my first impressions. It has the right balance of fantasy, historical weight, and most importantly a incredible story. I suggest completely doing your homework on the story, it pays dividends.

Anyway, others have said what I have. Loving this game, I've completely immersed myself in the lore. I've completely accepting playing Shinobi playstyle reminiscent to Tenchu. I'm so happy I gave this game another opportunity. I'm very happy it stands out nothing like Souls, not quite like Tenchu. It has its own unique quality that make it exceptional.

And the tendency to lose focus on the enemy, particularly during boss fights, is quite annoying. As for the difficulty, is it too hard? In general, I found the difficulty OK. There’s no leveling (in Soulsborne sense of the word), no covenants, no multiplayer, no variety in armor and weapons. It could be written off a stylistic choice, if the rest of the game didn’t feel very similar to the previous FromSoftware games. But it does, so Sekrio comes across as rather shallow. Sekiro Shadows Die Twice is a milestone in the genre. It offers complex, stunning and precise sword fights and duels that its predecessors lacked, and from which its successors will have to keep up with. You no longer simply learn by repeatedly and unfairly dying, but you refine your talents as a player. You seek unique methods to overcome each boss, rather than just rolling at the right time before spamming a few hits.
