This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Apparently Miyazaki didn't think he could refine the Dark Souls formula anymore, so he chose to deconstruct it instead. Sekiro is all about the removal of variety. Do you enjoy pure magic/ranged builds? They're gone. Do you prefer to be more agile or more tanky? You get to be agile, period. Do you like acquiring/customizing/upgrading weapons and armor? Too bad, they're gone. Do you like duels with other players or co-op with your friends? All multiplayer features are gone.

So what do you get to do now? You get to parry (deflect) all the things! Yay! Wait, I could play like that in Souls games too. Well, now it's the ONLY way to play! Yaaaaay! You also get a jump button so you can jump over sweeping attacks. Except when none of those things work.

You see, there are two bosses in the game, with different skins on them. The first one is the boss whose posture you can break. You beat this boss by standing absolutely still wherever you want, it doesn't matter where, and you play the s****y rhythm game where you press L1, A or B until he gets sick of it and falls over and lets you stab him in the face. The second boss is the one that breaks your posture if he sneezes in your general direction, regardless of what you are doing. You beat this boss by running around and waiting for him to finish his 20 second long mad flails of 1-shot attacks until you get an opening to go in and hit him once for 0.2% of his HP. Rinse and repeat. Honorable mention goes to a third category of boss, the one where the person who designed it was forgotten in a cubicle somewhere for the last 3 years and still thinks he is making a Souls game, so he sets the fight in a 2x2 room with a 6 foot tall ceiling where the objective is to get the camera unstuck from the corner where it's stuck after you gently touched the thumbstick, which made Sekiro dart across the room and slam into a wall, because he moves at 10 times the speed in this game.

Also note: If one of those two bosses seems too hard for you, that's probably because you missed a prosthetic arm tool, sold by a midget dressed in grey rags, crouched behind a grey rock on the side of a grey mountain, who spawns only after you talk to a totally different guy in another place and timeline altogether about something completely irrelevant. This prosthetic arm tool is specifically designed to trivialize that one boss fight and is useless for anything else. Lovely.

    Have fun!

Not sure what people are smoking but for me Sekiro is a step back from its predecessors, and it has nothing to do with it not being a souls game. But if you like parrying over and over and over again you'll probably like this game.

Difficulty: Souls games always had a certain challenge to them but I think most people would consider them tough, but fair. Sekiro on the other hand I would describe as beating your head against a brick wall until it gives, a challenge but not rewarding. My biggest issue is your damage threshold and output. You can die in just a few hits but bosses soak up damage like a sponge, you may as well be fighting them with a plastic butter knife. I know the common response from robots who can only speak in memes will be "git gud" but that doesn't apply here, it's just pure memorization of attack patterns rather than being able to adapt. Sekiro also ruins npc interaction as well, dieing too much will result in them getting sick of "dragonrot" which can only be cured from an item that is limited in quantity. Punishing just for the sake of it.

Combat: By far where this game fumbles the most. Fighting an enemy is centered around breaking an enemy stance and landing a deathblow. Some enemies have special attacks that can't be blocked which turns into a janken guessing game, couple that with the fact that some moves can kill you in 1 or 2 hits you have a nice recipe for a tedious combat system but it gets worse. Minibosses usually have smaller weak enemies around them so before you can even attempt fighting them again so you have to clear them out since taking on multiple enemies is a death sentence. The dodge is almost useless as you don't get the same invincible frames like the other souls games and its so high risk to do so your forced to parry which gets boring very quickly. I like the idea of the grappling hook but it felt like a shallow gimmick to me, not very useful in a fight as the sub weapons only chip away at enemies life and are usually blocked. Using it to get around was fun though.

Stealth: When it works it's great, but the problem is that its inconsistent. Sometimes you can walk right up to an enemy from the side and stealth kill them, other times you can be behind a wall and still alert everyone in the vicinity. You can throw objects to distract but this is inconsistent too, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. This is a mechanic that I feel doesn't mesh well with the bonfire system as it becomes tedious to stealth the same enemies just to attempt the boss again. Also there is no option to go pure stealth because you're forced into single combat when it comes to mini bosses or bosses, which is the opposite of what it means to be a deadly shinobi.

Sekiro borrows some elements from past souls games but does very little to stand out resulting in a game that has no identity outside of being a challenging action game made by fromsoft. I cant recommend this to souls veterans because they would be turned off by the lack of alternate weapons/armor and how bare bones the combat is. But I also can't recommend it to newbies either because they would be turned off by the difficulty. Save your money.

TL;DR if you were one of the few who did dexterity builds, this is your time to shine.

Shame on me for riding the hype train and buying this day one. I knew this wasn't a Dark Souls game, but I still had hopes that it would have that From Software game-play. I also didn't enjoy the world that the game took place in... just kind of samey and boring. Stealth felt tacked on. I just felt bored by the whole ordeal and could not press on...

I'm happy people are enjoying it, but unfortunately it's not for me. Bummer.

BTW: PC port is awful, simply terribly, eg. I have many fps, no delay on screen, but input lag is real and exist. How to beat this kind of game with input lag? Please, From Software, tell me how do it, I will be grateful!

Now I begin to understand why Sekiro has a new publisher.

I registered on MetaCritic only to say how I am deeply disappointment.

It is such a promising game, but it has that "dark soul" system that a new gamer is probably unfamiliar with. I feel like a freaking tank commander when fighting. You almost need to study your opponents one by one before engaging them. It makes it rather painful to some of us I guess.

Is this supposed to be a joke? AAA PC release without proper keyboard support? WTF? Also, no ultrawide support, so basically this game feels like a console game being played in some sort of software emulator on PC.

The biggest issue I have with Sekiro is that it demands perfection from the player, yet punishes them for even the slightest misstep. This would be fine if the game's hit detection and controls were up to par, but unfortunately, they are not.

Too often, I found myself dying because of bad hit detection or clunky controls. Sometimes, I would dodge an attack only to be hit anyway because the game didn't register my movement correctly. Other times, I would try to jump over an obstacle, only to get stuck on it and take damage from an enemy. These issues are frustrating enough on their own, but when combined with the game's punishing difficulty, they make for an experience that is more aggravating than enjoyable.

Furthermore, while the game's story and world-building are certainly impressive, I found that they were often overshadowed by the game's difficulty. Instead of being able to fully immerse myself in the game's lore and characters, I was constantly stressed out about the next fight and whether or not I would be able to survive it.

In conclusion, while I can see why some people might enjoy Sekiro's challenging gameplay, I personally find it to be a bad game due to its demanding nature and flawed mechanics. I hope that future games in the same vein will learn from Sekiro's mistakes and provide a more balanced and enjoyable experience for players.

'Just keep at it until you git gud' except the combat is centered around these scripted death animations where the camera goes cinematic and then back to normal every few seconds when fighting a large number of enemies. How about instead, just let me fight all the enemies and kill them like a normal action game without the Alice in Wonderland syndrome? I gave it a few hours to see what the hype was all about. It should be a textbook lesson in poor game design that should be avoided at all costs with its counterpoint being Ninja Gaiden Black about what to strive for in a great action game. Expand

I beat all From games including BloodBorne and Demon Souls, and Sekiro to me was the weakest in terms of the feel and quality in game engine as a whole.

I envy players who like this game a lot, maybe someday I will change my mind...

As a massive From Software fan, I would advise for the new fans to be cautious going into Sekiro coming from Souls games, it is a very different game in terms of the movement and combat feel. There is a lot of zealotry going on and people will dislike/downvote into oblivion if you say the game can be unsatisfying for some people, especially for hardcore Souls game fans. I understand that people feel great satisfaction from beating this game, but to me it seems that a lot of people praises this game automatically just because it is a From Software game. Were it from any other company, the initial reviews would have been much harsher, and Sekiro fans will not accept that reality. That's why you don't see negative reviews for this game....

After finishing the game on PC thoroughly (defeated all bosses, mini-bosses and explored every nook and cranny) and expecting the most difficult samurai-style combat game in years, I was extremely disappointed and consider this title FromSoftware's worst. While an interesting combat game at first glance, it quickly turns into Dance Dance Revolution.

    The good:
    - Wonderful setting and graphic design
    - Japanese as the default language to really nail the atmosphere
    - Unique combat design
    - High difficulty, truly delivering the punishing experience which fans in my opinion wrongly attributed to DS.
    - The Umbrella. Fun and interesting, if a bit overpowered compared to other equipment

    The bad:
    1. Combat is purely based on reflexes, like a sport, while strategic intelligence is not at all rewarded. Slow enemies turn on a dime using magical homing weapons. Spear bearers are just as dangerous up close and attack just as quickly. Only archers have a weakness congruent with real-life physics (weak armor and melee) but they're barely a threat even at range as projectiles are magically blocked.
    2. Zero potential for immersion/role playing in combat. Real-life katana battles are quick, often settled in seconds as the katana's purpose is to wound the opponent critically before he can retaliate. High skill, high reward like in the Bushido series. Sekiro battles are long, drawn-out boxing matches. Sekiro dies quickly but he can fully restore his wounds more than 10 times each battle, and revive a few times to boot.
    3. Stealth is an option only during unimportant battles (riffraff and certain optional minibosses) but tedious and basic. Sekiro is supposedly a spy/assassin yet he fights like Rambo. The game may have started as a Tenchu reboot but shares few similarities.
    4. Sekiro's base moveset is extremely limited when compared to other hack-and-slash games. There's a hack, a stab and a slightly different version while sprinting.
    5. Minimal customization. Sekiro can equip one special move and one piece of equipment at a time.
    6. Combat basically comes down to "rock, paper, scissors" reactions to "perilous attacks", deflecting the standard attacks with moderate timing difficulty and being as aggressive as possible while the opponent rests. There is one DS-esque boss exception but in my opinion that was the least enjoyable boss in the game due to Sekiro's limited moveset and equipment.
    7. Enemy combat rules are completely unlike Sekiro's combat rules. Therefore, learning what kills Sekiro doesn't give any insight into how to kill opponents. It doesn't need to be fair, but it does need to make sense.

So far it's still a 4/10 game. A good challenge at least. But here's the awful:
    - Sekiro is fully animation locked during most of his moves, unable to control his body in any way. Key presses made during this time are sometimes discarded and sometimes queued. Apparently FromSoftware wants us to experience how it feels to have Parkinson's. Point made: It's horrific and maddening.
    - Full immortality during deathblows. No punishment whatsoever for taking the time to disembowel an enemy, simply "because it looks cewl", yet we're stuck watching that animation over and over and over. Tenchu games had more kill animations on the PS2 with a chance to dismember.
    - The PC port is ghastly. It has a 0.1 to 0.3 second input lag depending on area, and yes my PC is more than capable. Combined with the animation locking Sekiro is frequently unresponsive during critical moments.
    - Human mini-bosses can often be kited by having them move far from their "home" position. They won't defend themselves and slowly walk back. Horrible AI design.
    - Target lock is lost when Sekiro is cornered, a natural occurrence during arena-based fights (including bosses), leaving him entirely helpless. This is clearly a bug as there is no sensible reason for a trained Shinobi to behave so irrationally during a crucial moment in battle.

Lastly, for an offline game it sports a strangely pronounced community. As is to be expected of a sports game it has attracted a horde of game-jocks so proud of having pushed the sequenced buttons that they wail "git gud" in chorus at anyone who disliked any aspect of the game, in a thinly veiled attempt to brag. The reason I completely finished it is to prove them wrong. And I did - this isn't about skill.

I've seen toxic communities before but none quite as stubborn, uniform and unimaginative as this one. This is why I consider any downvotes on this review as upvotes - thanks for the "support" in advance.

In conclusion, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is in my opinion one of the worst entries in the hack-and-slash genre so far, a failed stealth game and a failed PC port. The difficulty is purely technical in nature and deserves no credit from a game design perspective, as it fails to challenge meaningful human abilities.

I'm almost 40 hours in and at the end stretch of the game. Every time I played, I hoped for it to click, thinking that it may be something wrong with me. The glowing critic reviews left and right didn't help either. To summarize what I think is wrong with the game, it's the overall interaction of it's (stealth / combat) mechanics that encourages you to play in a very specific way.

For example, a large percentage of the minibosses have entourages that are designed such that the safest / most rewarding way to go about those engagements is to:

    1) Stealth kill a minion
    2) Run out of aggro range
    3) Wait a minute for remaining enemies to disengage
    4) Repeat 1 to 3 until you can fight the miniboss individually

immersion issues aside, doing the above can take up to 15 minutes per "run"
and if you die - which always will happen because you have no idea what the new boss' moveset is, you have to repeat the process all over again. The major bosses are also designed to be impossible to defeat the first time through because you have no idea what the exact timing is for all their strikes and combos and this meant you can never reliably parry their attacks which is also the singular way to win.

The whole game is akin to doing tiresome dance rehearsals repeatedly until you get a waltz down the way your instructor wants it to be, except he doesn't tell you what he wants in the first place and you have to be beaten into knowing. This wasn't a problem with Dark Souls because caution could always bring you far and there were plenty of alternative solutions to the same puzzle.

By the end, Sekiro felt easier and more manageable when I could play by it's set of rules but that's because it forced me to play the only way it wanted to be played and the lack of player agency left a bad taste in my mouth.

My conclusion at the end is this - Sekiro was overdesigned and has an identity issue. It wants to be a little bit of Tenchu, but doesn't do it well. It also wants to somewhat be Dark Souls, but doesn't do that well either. It definitely wants to be Onimusha / Bushido Blade but is also halfhearted about that. I have little doubt that Sekiro will not be looked upon favorably years after the hype has gone. But still, plenty of love to players who had a good time with it.

I was ready to do multiple NG runs of the game with different setups and load-outs but the game doesn't offer any variety. what you start out with is what you get. The prosthetic tools while at first glance seem to be the variety of the game they are just lackluster and not worth using since they are basically high risk for no reward during combat.

This game seems to be designed for very specific gamers who liked the challenge runs in previous Souls games, or added difficulty through multiple NG+ cycles. While this is certainly many Souls players, most people won't enjoy punishing difficulty with demand of mastering the game in order to succeed. Options like leaving a boss fight to level up and then try later, or summoning outside help no longer exist, leaving you with only one options that is "git gud", if you have time, patience and nerves for it.

I really feel like this game is a step back from Bloodborne, which I consider a masterpiece, and hope that this is "just a phase", not a direction From is taking with every game from now on.

As a fan of the previous From software titles, I had high hopes for Sekiro. Sadly, I am very disappointed with the game for various reasons.

The combat is very restrictive. You don't have weapons, armor or classes to choose from. You have one weapon and a few tools which only have niche uses. The parrying mechanic which could be skipped entirely in the previous games is now the core mechanic you are required to use constantly. In other words, fights are based on split second reactions to what your enemy is doing. This alone wouldn't be bad if it weren't for two reasons.

First, this mechanic simply doesn't work well with crowds of enemies. If you need to pay close attention to what your opponent is doing and time your reaction appropriately, you cannot handle multiple foes at once, especially when some of them are off camera. So you end up running away which is far too easy in this game. This makes you inclined to just skip minions by running past them until you get to the next shrine.

The second problem is that bosses simply take too long to defeat when you play the game the way it is supposed to be played. I'm sure that many speedrunners have found ways to cheese bosses in order to kill them quickly, but if you actually use the reactive gameplay of Sekiro, aren't perfect and don't absolutely use every opportunity you got, then some bosses will take forever and are just exhausting or even boring. A good example is the giant ape boss, who is very easy to defeat if you take your time, but takes so freaking long that the hardest thing about him is not to get impatient and rush in because you finally want to be done with this boring grind. Furi also has quick reactive gameplay, but it is fun and exciting because the pacing is good. Imagine playing Furi but every boss had ten times the amount of health and can easily one shot you if you stop paying enough attention for just a second.

Then there is the stealth mechanic which is an absolute joke. My guess is that the reason they put it in the game was because the combat, as mentioned before, doesn't work well with groups. So what are you supposed to do when there are groups of enemies? Sneak around them and stealth kill them one by one. This also sounds nice on paper but the implementation is horrible. The biggest problem is that you don't feel like a stealthy ninja at all. Most enemies in the game are deaf and blind. You can make loud noises right next to them or walk in their line of sight them without them noticing you. And your "stealth kill" is as loud as a gun shot. It's a joke. Not to mention that it is complely unnecessary since, as mentioned before, you can very easily just run past enemies even when they are alerted. So sneaking feels just like a waste of time and you will be seen eventually in a new area anyway because you don't know where all the enemies are positioned or which of them are blind and which aren't. So what will you do? Spend an hour trying to sneak through an area while trying to memorize all the locations and patrol routes of enemies, or just run past all of them to the next shrine which takes like five minutes?

Graphically speaking, Sekiro is very ugly game. Drab environments, poor animation and a lack of that From Software 'polish', as if it was developed by an inferior division of the company, out of a scrapped prototype.

The last thing I want to mention is that Sekiro doesn't feel rewarding. I played more than half of the game in hoped that the gameplay would grow on me and what annoys me the most is the feeling that I essentially didn't get anything for my trouble. If this was a Souls game then at least I would have a unique character who was formed by his many adventures by now. But in Sekiro, I still have this ugly dude who is an exact copy of everybody else's character who plays the game. Yes there are some RPG elements but I wonder why they even bothered to put them into the game. If I cannot level up at my own leisure but only when I get to certain points in the game, then the game could just balance out the damage and health of the enemies so that the initial built can be used the entire time. The game gives you the illusion of progression but when you think about it, you as a character don't progress at all. When you get to the point where you deal more damage, you also get to the point where enemies have more health so it all evens out and is essentially meaningless.

Overall a horrible game that is overrated because of From's reputation rather than because of its own merits.

Played it only for 10 minutes, then refunded. Just take Dark Souls/Bloodborne/Nioh and take off all the cool stuff like, level, personalization of the character, weapons, etc....

No objective markers. You're on your own figuring out a complex maze. There are lots of times when you can get completely stuck with no idea of where to go next. But there would be a hidden pathway or a blind jump that you need to take.

    An unsatisfying combat system.
    Sudden extreme difficulty spikes.
Parry timing is way too small.
You can't customize any weapons, armors.
Stealth doesn't work (I upgraded to max)).
Figure out the rhythm of the bosses by dying. Totally impossible (even for Sekiro character himself). Then rinse and repeat.
Punishing death-penalty (no surprise since it was made by the same sadists from Dark Souls).
Limited exploration. Invisible walls. Hidden (but compulsory) pathways.

    Overall rating - 0/10.

TLDR - Bloodborne, but they took out everything that made Bloodborne work, and set it in Japan, and also modelled it around the most finicky combat tactics from the Soulsborne series (namely parrying, which for some bizarre reason the fanboys try to argue is not actually a core, essential part of the gameplay loop despite being exactly that) FromSoft has continued their degeneration fromTLDR - Bloodborne, but they took out everything that made Bloodborne work, and set it in Japan, and also modelled it around the most finicky combat tactics from the Soulsborne series (namely parrying, which for some bizarre reason the fanboys try to argue is not actually a core, essential part of the gameplay loop despite being exactly that) FromSoft has continued their degeneration from tough-but-fair (Demon's Souls, mostly. Dark Souls 1, 95%) to Tough-and-****-the-player. The game plays nicely when it works, but unless you're a major masochist with hyperactive reflexes, I can't recommend it.

Full text - Sekiro just doesn't do enough right to reach that same point of enjoyment. Your health is too low to start with, to the point where the first non-tutorial boss (Chained Ogre) can very easily knock off 50-75% of your health, roughly, meaning that if you take a single hit from your average enemy prior, he will kill you in one hit. Even if you live, you have a high chance of being flung off the map, which gets rid of the last of your health, making your respawn token's worthless. This is exacerbated when you reach Shinobi Hunter Eshin of Misen, who can take you from full health to dead faster than you can blink, you are given the opprotunity to pick up the Mikiri Counter combat skill, however it is damn near impossible to get it to work in the moment. This is both made worse by the fact that any attacks that result in a synced animation (grab attacks for instance) have some serious phantom range, to the point where you can dodge directly behind the Chained Ogre's lunging grab attack, and still get grabbed as the ogre yeets himself 180 degrees and grabs you anyway, the same thing can happen with Enshin. In no particular order I personally experienced multiple instances of being knocked out of the air by attacks that very clearly did not hit me and being grabbed out of the air by attacks that very clearly did not connect.

I could go on about other things, about how the game can't tell if it's trying to be a fast paced action game or a stealth game, how the combat just doesn't match the game and it's difficulty in conjunction with your pitiful amounts of help, the game itself being generally misleading out or outright deceitful, like how it makes it clear early one that dodging is key, yet with most even basic enemies in the game, dodging is no guarentee that the enemy won't just spin in place like a top and hit you anyway. I could go on about how fighting more than one enemy at a time, which will happen very early on in the Hirata estate becausethe fact that enemies can see for miles is an absolute train wreck, or about how everything happens so quickly in a game that demands caution and precision making the game a miserable experience for those without the reflexes of a coked-up squirrel.

In short, like Dark Souls 3, it suffers from Bloodborne syndrome, albeit to an outrageously higher degree. Fast paced combat that has no place in the game, lacking all the systems that made it work such as the Rally system. There IS an upgrade in the first technique scroll that allows to recover health on a deathblow, but that isn't going to help you because you generally don't get that many deathblows when it would be the most useful (i.e boss fights), and knowing the pitiful amount of health you get at the start, it probably would be uselss anyway.

Hopefully by the time Elden Ring comes around, Miyazaki and co. will finally be over the hyper actively difficult game play that plagued Sekiro and Dark Souls 3 to a drastically lesser extent, and realize that it's just not fun having your skull caved in by relentless, artificial difficulty of homing attacks, low health at the start, and dying in 2-3 hits, and parry centered combat despite the fanboys screeching otherwise. If you're a horrendous Sadomasochist, I can see you getting mileage out of this. Otherwise, I really cannot bring myself to recommend this like I would FromSoft's previous work.

There’s no leveling (in Soulsborne sense of the word), no covenants, no multiplayer, no variety in armor and weapons. It could be written off a stylistic choice, if the rest of the game didn’t feel very similar to the previous FromSoftware games. But it does, so Sekrio comes across as rather shallow. Sekiro Shadows Die Twice is a milestone in the genre. It offers complex, stunning and precise sword fights and duels that its predecessors lacked, and from which its successors will have to keep up with. You no longer simply learn by repeatedly and unfairly dying, but you refine your talents as a player. You seek unique methods to overcome each boss, rather than just rolling at the right time before spamming a few hits.
