    Pros:

But when you do, holy smokes does it feel good. The soundtrack is pretty damn solid throughout, with some particular bangers along the way. The story is...fine I guess. Its probably the weakest part of Sekiro, but it doesn't really bring the game down in any way. The voice acting is good in literally every single language this game has.
I should note however that this game very much will not be for everyone, even some Soulsborne veterans I know didn't really care for this game as much as others. That is mostly due to the fact that there is only one way really of fighting in this game. Theres no great swords, daggers, bows, or magic. There is no variety essentially, you'll be slashing, deflecting, jumping and mikiri countering the whole way through to the very end. Now I really like this style of gameplay, but if you were the kind of guy/gal to hit and run in games like dark souls or you perhaps used to rolling through most attacks with ease, this game will take some real getting used to or you may just straight up not enjoy it. If you can adapt to this singular style of gameplay, you should have an extremely difficult but extremely satisfying time with this game. Its a #P4P great!

+ The art-style fits the Sengoku Japan setting of the game pretty well.
+ Similar to From's previous games, there are checkpoints you have to search for.
+ Combat is pretty fun once you understand how it works. (There is a certain boss who will force you to understand how combat works.)
    + Multiple endings.
+ Stealth in this game is fun as opposed to the boring stuff you see in other games.
    + Fun boss fights.
+ The game rewards you for exploration.
+ Japanese voice acting in this game is top-notch.
+ Lots of varied areas and enemies. You will fight humans, monkeys, monsters and more monkeys. Lots and lots of monkeys.

+- The game is very fast-paced. This is alright once you get used to it but might feel too hard while playing the game for the first few hours.
+- Some soundtracks were fun to listen to. Some were "ok".

    - While I like challenging games, this game felt too punishing. Getting hit two to four times while fighting bosses means you are dead. Moreover, some attacks are fast and will one-shot you which is something I haven't encountered in From's previous games. One-shots have always been clearly telegraphed in their previous games (remember Lorian's beam in DS3?) but for some reason they did not follow the same rule in this game.
    - It can take a long time trying to beat some bosses/mini bosses only for you to get killed for getting hit twice. Meh.
    - Headless.

Overall, great game. Highly recommended if and ONLY if you are looking for a good challenge.

If you are a fan of Dark Souls , you will probably like this.
Sekiro has excellent depth and lore , and the combat keeps you entertained for hours.
The vertical scaling of the world is interesting , and adds a new feel to the traditional Dark Souls recipe.

Negatives are that some parts do feel slightly drawn out, but that is a minor complaint.
    Overall an excellent experience.

It's a from software game. It's more solid than anything in the dark souls saga, but it still fails on a wonky interface, strange character moves (who slows down a blow towards the end... how... why). These changes lead to there being a correct way to play this game, and your journey as a player to master the mechanics is mirrored by Sekiro's journey to become a master shinobi.
The ways to cheat this natural progression are reduced: you can't summon other players, and both over-leveling or building a tank are no longer an option.

After finishing the game on PC thoroughly (defeated all bosses, mini-bosses and explored every nook and cranny) and expecting the most difficult samurai-style combat game in years, I was extremely disappointed and consider this title FromSoftware's worst. While an interesting combat game at first glance, it quickly turns into Dance Dance Revolution.

    The good:
    - Wonderful setting and graphic design
    - Japanese as the default language to really nail the atmosphere
    - Unique combat design
    - High difficulty, truly delivering the punishing experience which fans in my opinion wrongly attributed to DS.
    - The Umbrella. Fun and interesting, if a bit overpowered compared to other equipment

    The bad:
    1. Combat is purely based on reflexes, like a sport, while strategic intelligence is not at all rewarded. Slow enemies turn on a dime using magical homing weapons. Spear bearers are just as dangerous up close and attack just as quickly. Only archers have a weakness congruent with real-life physics (weak armor and melee) but they're barely a threat even at range as projectiles are magically blocked.
    2. Zero potential for immersion/role playing in combat. Real-life katana battles are quick, often settled in seconds as the katana's purpose is to wound the opponent critically before he can retaliate. High skill, high reward like in the Bushido series. Sekiro battles are long, drawn-out boxing matches. Sekiro dies quickly but he can fully restore his wounds more than 10 times each battle, and revive a few times to boot.
    3. Stealth is an option only during unimportant battles (riffraff and certain optional minibosses) but tedious and basic. Sekiro is supposedly a spy/assassin yet he fights like Rambo. The game may have started as a Tenchu reboot but shares few similarities.
    4. Sekiro's base moveset is extremely limited when compared to other hack-and-slash games. There's a hack, a stab and a slightly different version while sprinting.
    5. Minimal customization. Sekiro can equip one special move and one piece of equipment at a time.
    6. Combat basically comes down to "rock, paper, scissors" reactions to "perilous attacks", deflecting the standard attacks with moderate timing difficulty and being as aggressive as possible while the opponent rests. There is one DS-esque boss exception but in my opinion that was the least enjoyable boss in the game due to Sekiro's limited moveset and equipment.
    7. Enemy combat rules are completely unlike Sekiro's combat rules. Therefore, learning what kills Sekiro doesn't give any insight into how to kill opponents. It doesn't need to be fair, but it does need to make sense.

So far it's still a 4/10 game. A good challenge at least. But here's the awful:
    - Sekiro is fully animation locked during most of his moves, unable to control his body in any way. Key presses made during this time are sometimes discarded and sometimes queued. Apparently FromSoftware wants us to experience how it feels to have Parkinson's. Point made: It's horrific and maddening.
    - Full immortality during deathblows. No punishment whatsoever for taking the time to disembowel an enemy, simply "because it looks cewl", yet we're stuck watching that animation over and over and over. Tenchu games had more kill animations on the PS2 with a chance to dismember.
    - The PC port is ghastly. It has a 0.1 to 0.3 second input lag depending on area, and yes my PC is more than capable. Combined with the animation locking Sekiro is frequently unresponsive during critical moments.
    - Human mini-bosses can often be kited by having them move far from their "home" position. They won't defend themselves and slowly walk back. Horrible AI design.
    - Target lock is lost when Sekiro is cornered, a natural occurrence during arena-based fights (including bosses), leaving him entirely helpless. This is clearly a bug as there is no sensible reason for a trained Shinobi to behave so irrationally during a crucial moment in battle.

Lastly, for an offline game it sports a strangely pronounced community. As is to be expected of a sports game it has attracted a horde of game-jocks so proud of having pushed the sequenced buttons that they wail "git gud" in chorus at anyone who disliked any aspect of the game, in a thinly veiled attempt to brag. The reason I completely finished it is to prove them wrong. And I did - this isn't about skill.

I've seen toxic communities before but none quite as stubborn, uniform and unimaginative as this one. This is why I consider any downvotes on this review as upvotes - thanks for the "support" in advance.

In conclusion, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is in my opinion one of the worst entries in the hack-and-slash genre so far, a failed stealth game and a failed PC port. The difficulty is purely technical in nature and deserves no credit from a game design perspective, as it fails to challenge meaningful human abilities.

There isn't any real opportunity for different ways to play, lest you want to speedrun it, which in and of itself is an interesting proposition in its own right. Overall : really varied yet fun and complex mechanically combat system that is incredible.

Story : i dont want to spoil much but its a shift from the very sparse Fromsofware narratives, and its much better for it.

Graphics : if we talk about raw Graphical powers this is a good looking game, but when you factor in the art work and the world design it pushes it much further.

+ Very Immersive (especially with the japanese voice over).
+ Feudal Japan done right finally.
    + Amazing Soundtrack.
    + Very good Voice Acting.
    + Greatly Designed.
    + Incredible Bosses/Mini Bosses
    + lots of enemy variety.

    - only con i can think of is the lack of visual customization, but its not a big deal considering the time period.

This is an EXTREMELY POLARIZING game. Some will LOVE it, but some will ABSOLUTELY HATE it. And I perfectly understand both sides.

This game is absolutely not for anyone. If you thought Dark Souls I/II/III and Bloodborne were hard, then wait until you play this. Sekiro makes those games feel like casual games; but I'm not saying this with delight. I'm not saying this is entirely a good thing.

Easy stuff out of the way. Graphics are fine; graphically looks like polished BB and DS. Art style is PHENOMENAL. Enemies and bosses look distinct and great. Areas look and feel distinctly Japanese and awesome. Sound is good. They borrowed some sounds from DS and BB which adds a little nostalgia. Music is GREAT. Stealth mechanic is fine. It's fast and fluid, and stealth kills are satisfying. Stealth's a little simplistic and the enemies are very blind when it comes to stealth, but it's fine. Level design is good also. Grappling hook matches well with levels, and makes you feel like a proper ninja. Story is good. Typical nebulous FromSoftware plot, typical grim and vague characters. Yet somehow, lots of backstory to be discovered by reading item descriptions and reading between the lines of the dialogue. The main draw is the combat.

Yet also, the most controversial part of this game is the combat. To sum it up, the game basically demands absolute perfection. You must parry at the exact time. You must dodge this exact way. You must delay your dodge exactly 1 second. You must jump this exact moment. You must only attack in this exact window. Every single boss and mini-boss demands this of you. I can easily see 80% of people who bought this game to give up after a few bosses because the game is simply so exhausting to play. Bosses absolutely CHUNK your health bar, so you die often. Because you die so often, you learn so very little per attempt at a boss. Additionally, early on you'll realize that you can often get stun-locked to death.

The game goes out of it's way to make you feel like you're getting nowhere. If I didn't buy this game, like a friend lent it to me or something, I would've gave up on it after a few hours. But since I bought it...I went ahead and finished the darn thing. You know, sunk cost.

Anyway, more combat mechanics stuff. The harder bosses do this thing where they switch up their attacks mid combo. On paper, this sounds cool; it makes the game more challenging. But again, in practice this simply makes the game irredeemably unforgiving.

There's also a mechanic wherein after you exploit a boss's weakness thrice, the weakness stops working just because. I mean, I get it, exploiting it again and again would trivialize the encounter, but this mechanic is guaranteed to kill you 2-3 times before you realize what's going on, merely adding to your frustration. Makes sense on paper, feels bad in practice. There's a lot of that going on in Sekiro.

The spirit emblems mechanic in Sekiro feels bad too. I get it, it's meant to limit your use of your gadgets, make you use them strategically. Sounds fine on paper, in practice, it makes you be a scrooge about using it, wondering when is the best time is to use it. By the time you've learned when and where you can use your emblems, you've already figured out how to beat the boss WITHOUT IT. You can swap health for spirit emblems, but you already know how hard the game is. You'd never do that. They should have just used a cooldown mechanic instead, so that you are free to use it, yet also punished for misusing it. They went too far with the spirit emblems.

Enemies also have these long grapple animations which look cool the first time you get hit by them, but since you die so often to enemies, it immediately becomes annoying to have to watch your character get mauled when you already know you're dead. You'll think "Goodness just kill me already so I can try again! I already know I'm dead I don't wanna watch this AGAIN stop rubbing it in my face!!!"

We haven't even talked about Kuro's Charm and the Demon Bell.

One makes the bosses hit harder, and the other makes it so that you take damage anyway if you don't perform a perfect parry. These two difficulty-increasing options just make the game more infuriating. Again, I beat the game with these things activated. I already "got gud". And let me tell you, it didn't really feel good to beat the game this way. It feels weird to have those features. Like, why bother making one of the hardest games this century even harder?...It's hard to explain, but if I were one of the devs, I would've suggested to remove the charm and the bell entirely since the game is so freaking hard as it is.

When all is said and done, Sekiro is cool, but I wouldn't want a Sekiro 2

This is what i'm going to summarize my experience in this game:

    - The world is really connected, i've seen people do speedrun and also Ymfah's guide on breaking RPG games, so it really From-ish world model

    - Combat mechanic is pretty new to all Dark Souls and Bloodborne players, which is blocking is the key of survival and also parrying. The fun part is, there is no stamina, so you can attack enemies as much as you want

    - As a SoulsBorne player, being able to jumping, stealth and swimming is a miracle

    - The world came from Miyazaki's head, which is no surprise when you'll stumble on a level which you'll have to go across a poisonous swamp

    - The story is amazing, multiple ending is also great

    - Death is not an end to this game

    - Unlike Dark Souls and BloodBorne, there is no perfect waifu material

    - The leveling mechanic is really frustrating, and there is no way to re-obtaining your money or exp once you're dead, but i still love the game

    - While the game only offer your Vitality up to 20, but your attack power can reach into 99 if you really into the game

Conclusion: I really like the game, but the game is pretty much dead, so there will be no DLC (As far as i think), the only thing that kept this game alive is the mod community itself, though i starting to see that they're dying as well, not like SoulsBorne community. But, compared to Dark Souls Remaster, this game is worth the money you spent

I love the worlds and plots of the souls games but at the end of the day I love these games because the combat is amazing, and Sekiro has easily the best combat of any game I've ever played. You are limited to one weapon this time, but the things you can do with it combined with the combat arts and special techniques makes sure it never gets boring to use. Most people only use a few of the many weapons in the previous games anyways, so I don't mind this change as much as I thought I might. The movement changes are a lot of fun and make the way you can interact with the world so much more fun. The areas are some of the best designed in fromsofts games. It being such a different style of world to Dark Souls and Bloodborne makes it feel fresh again. Where certain areas in those games felt like different versions of themselves. Like the poison swamp areas and the catacomb areas, and the lava areas, etc. The main flaw of the game is the way it's balanced, certain abilities and prosthetics feel like there's no real reason to use them. I like all of the characters a lot, but their side quests could have been done better. Sekiro had the most intuitive side character quests of the fromsoft games which is a good thing. Previous games required a guide or hours of wandering around to progress. I love the more direct method of story telling Sekiro has as well. Expand

Grea graphics and fighting style, but a "babysitter" game for your 9 year old brother where he's suppsosed to play the same level over and over and over again to keep him occupied. If you're over 17 you're going to get bored playing the same level over and over and over again.

A Mediocre game, with a mediocre story.
Maybe someone should've told the devs, that making it a **** hard game doesn't make it a better game.
Even if it were easy, it would not be top notch.
Anyway, too much trial and error needed, resulting in dying A LOT.

Great game, these type of epic boss fights are the reason I play videogames.

I would not recommend it to casuals tough as it is sometimes super difficult, but the hardest fights are optional.

Biggest difference with dark souls, is that most enemies are human here instead of huge monsters, you will have to mostly parry instead of dodging, different playstyle.

Sekiro shares some "from software feeling" with Dark Souls, but is very different. The emphasis is on learning how to fight with the katana, blocking, deflecting, dodging and countering attacks. As you progress through the game you learn new techniques which you can apply in the correct situation. After successful deflections there's always time for counter attacks, even if it doesn't feel like it. The positives is the sword clashing system, the prosthetic tools, the story, the atmosphere, the world & its characters. The negatives of this game is that you can only equip 1 Combat Art, of which many cost Spirit Emblems & you only get max 20 & using something like the Ashina Cross (which does a ton of damage) means they'll be depleted in 10 hits against a boss, not to be refilled until the boss is down. Imagine if Bloodborne's trick weapons 2nd attack would cost QS bullets? It's a problem because Spirit Emblems is pretty rare & is needed for the prosthetic tools & late game bosses have 3 health bars. The game would be better if you could get different outfits & swords & if you could equip 2 Combat Arts IMO. Bosses use several Combat Arts in 1 battle but you can only use 1. Also, some Combat Arts like Floating Passage does less damage than regular hits. Expand

Once you do though you start to love the game, the rhythm of the battles, the feeling of overcoming a boss, the aggression and adrenaline during a challenging fight. I love the line of "I'm good at dark souls but this game sucks cause I died like 20 times to a dumb boss", it's people expecting to be good at this game and getting frustrated when it's not a dark souls rehash. It's honestly their loss not giving this game the necessary amount of time. I'm glad this is not a dark souls rehash and what they have made. The graphics look really decent. The combat is fluid and definitely a highlight of the game. It is punishing, one mistake might cost you life. I would like game to explain fighting little bit more. There are few ways of countering incoming attacks. It is rock/paper/scissor mechanic due to the lack of proper tutorial less skilled players will find it really difficult to defeat some tougher enemies. Game has lots of mini bosses. Dont worry though game has a really clever resurrection mechanic, in the event of death game lets you use resurrection power to offer a 2nd chance. You will most likely die again but hey at least you could try to tip the scales of death in your favor.

You need to use controller for the optimal gaming experience. I could not play comfortably with K/M, I just prefer to use controllers for these ports. Game is playable with K/M but controller is a way to go.

Game does not support 21:9 resolution which is a big negative for me. Fortunately there are skilled people out there who come up with the fix to this problem. Fix which can be obtained from WSGF website get rids of black bars. It works similar like the fix used in Dark Souls games. Any movement caught on camera outside 16:9 is captured in frames which breaks immersion a little bit so make sure to have your camera centered. All items and HUD is placed within 16:9 aspect ratio but it is ok. The only problem is stealth mechanic and visual feedback when you are low on health. In both cases 16:9 part of the screen will be covered with dark grey or red filter. The picture outside 16:9 will be normal. It is annoying but you can get use to it. Other than this game looks stunning in 21:9. So if you are blessed with UW monitor make sure to use the fix and play it this way.

Artwork is sublime and the setting is really well done. It makes me want to explore the world. I would love to have some sort of difficulty scale slider but these games are all about the challenge so if you are looking for a game that will test your skills better be ready.

I would easily give this game a 10 but lack of 21:9 support is a big let down. It would not cost developers that much time to recognize this immersive style of gaming.

    Pros:
    - graphics & artwork
    - fighting mechanics
    - setting
    - challenging

    Cons:
    - lack of 21: 9 support
    - too difficult

    Score: 9/10 - absolutely worth getting !

Especially the combat is demanding, fresh, dynamic, risky and rewarding, precisely everything what combat is not in modern RPG games, where you just press a single button and your stats fight for you. Sekiro's combat best capture the spirit of a swordfight, the necessity to feel the rhythm and the flow of the endless back-and-forth exchanges of the initiative, and after drilling a demanding encounter enough so that you are finally able to win, every victory in this game is rewarded by deep sense of accomplisment.

Aesthetics of the game are top notch - level and character design, architecture, music, everything is dripping with atmosphere, easily immersing the player in the grim and moody world of this particular interpretation of the Sengoku Jidai period (dragons, ghosts and dark magic are in, by the way). When discussing "realism", one must realize that this is the mythological Japan we are talking about - Arthurian Britain would have to contain Merlin, magic swords and eniightment-bringing Grail, so similarly, Sekiro brings dragon blood, search for immortality, demons and tengus from the prop department to conjure up a one-of-a-kind story to tell.

Not everything is perfect, however, especially on the technical side of things. The problems with locked framerate, typical for console ports, are present as well, and were solved only by a third party mod tool, which is less than ideal. The graphic engine shows its age, using a sort of dithering instead of true transparency, which creates really ugly dithering artifacts in some situations. The camera traditionally fails to track your opponents when the action speeds up, and sometimes shows a piece of your garment from 1 inch distance while the unseen enemy cuts of your head. Performance suffers from unused network calls that are mistakenly left in the code - once again, a problem solved only by a mod.

However, the small glitches must be forgiven, since Sekiro is a unique, intense, one-of-a-kind experience that in my opinion belongs rightfully among the very best games that have ever been produced. Well done, FROM software, you certainly know your craft!

Pros: The game's combat is great and works great, with Sekiro's hook all gotten too wide. The artificial intelligence of enemies is great since they can do just about anything you can do against them. You feel that you are evolving every moment and every defeated enemy is really a sense of victory. You can face enemies in a variety of ways: either on stealf, taking out your HP or breaking your posture.
Cons: The story is not very interesting but it's still good. Some enemies are powerful enough to even give you hit kill, frustrating enough you make a single mistake and die. The "dragon disease" caused after you die sometimes is very appealing, having to spend an item every time it happens (several times), but sometimes you do not even notice the difference, you should have thought of another way to punish yourself after the death. The bosses are not as interesting as FromSoftware is customary to do and some Mini Bosses are repeated, except that some Mini Bosses are more powerful than the bosses themselves, which makes no sense at all.

OK, I update the review after I finished the game, and from the 3 of 10 gave before, I'm going to increase the vote up to 6 of 10.
For me the game is unbalanced. You start the game nearly without equipment or skills, and have to farm exp to unlock some necessary mechanics. Every early boss is nearly impossible, requiring nearly hundreds of tentatives to be completed. I quitted the game for that reason. After all videos watched online I gave it another chance, and after unlocked some skills and items the game became... easy. After you get how to use Shinobi Firecracker, every boss becomes easy. You just have to parry some attacks, use SF, buff yourself and... done. For me one of the worst decision made by From was that parry actually damages the enemy. You can kill all the bosses of the game just parrying attacks, transforming an action-rpg game on a rythm game. Even the pattern of the bosses are not well made. They don't have different attacks that can be concatenated to make strange combos. They just have combos easy to forecast.
So the game in the start is frustrating and hard, in the end becomes easy. For this I said in the start that the game is "unbalanced". Even all the prosthetic tools and skills are nearly useless. You'll use everytime 23 of them. I had the feeling that the game wasn't meant to be played "as you want", but as IT WANTS. This is the risk on making a true and pure action game, and this is the problem of this game. A deepness and profundity like this was acceptable 10 years ago. Now everyone wants to modify the character, have rewards exploring, and things that an RPG game should give you.
The world of Sekiro it's a bit repetitive, but it's not bad. The problem is that you're not encouraged to explore it, because at least you'll find some little ( and not interesting ) lore details, or just an item to uprade your stats. The problem is even that more you explore the game, more you upgrade stats, and more the game gets easier.
One nice thing is that you're going to find a lot of secret bosses around the world. I really appreciated that thing. I also appreciated that all the "hard bosses" have an idol near them ( bonfire of dark souls ) so you don't have to walk for minutes before to try again ( you have to do this only with secret bosses ).
The game itself is funny to play after you pass the first 1520 hours of playing. The problem resides in the fact that in the first 20 hours you'll be stucked, and then you'll fly until the end of the game without problems.
So, it's a nice game and deserves to be played, but it's not the "game of the year" and things like this.

DS2 it's an 8/10 and DS3(It's the First Soulsborne I played, it is special) it's a 9.5/10 and until Sekiro came out, it shared the top spot with God of War 3 as the best games I ever played in my life, GOW 4 is a 9.4, Red Dead 1 its a 9.3 and Red Dead 2 its a 8.9 !!! Sekiro is amazing and I'm just Loving everything about the game !!!

There’s no leveling (in Soulsborne sense of the word), no covenants, no multiplayer, no variety in armor and weapons. It could be written off a stylistic choice, if the rest of the game didn’t feel very similar to the previous FromSoftware games. But it does, so Sekrio comes across as rather shallow. Sekiro Shadows Die Twice is a milestone in the genre. It offers complex, stunning and precise sword fights and duels that its predecessors lacked, and from which its successors will have to keep up with. You no longer simply learn by repeatedly and unfairly dying, but you refine your talents as a player. You seek unique methods to overcome each boss, rather than just rolling at the right time before spamming a few hits.

Dozens of hours later, we're still not sure how we feel about it. It's a game of contradictions, open and flexible in its level design, yet resolutely strict in its combat... It is a brilliant game, that is certain. but it is often a difficult one to truly love. Naturally, we can't put it down. [Issue#332, p.104]
