Some people are disappointed in the removal of RPG elements, but I actually prefer this skill-based game-play, instead the constant search for upgrades in other FromSoft games. It's a 10/10 and gave more than 80 hours of fun across 4 runs of the game. 100% worth! Expand

This game for me is undoubtedly the best game I ever played. The challenges, bosses, mini bosses, graphic, combat, and giving you the freedom I how you want to play the story. I really am lost for words, but the only reason it got a 10 from me because I can't go any higher, lol. Anyone that love gaming and a challenge do not hesitate to buy this game, is worth every penny.

I look at the negative reviews of people that just weren't able to 'Get it' thinking it was too hard and therefore stupid. Yes it takes time to get used to the mechanics after being used to Dark Souls. Yes it is a difficult game, the boss fights can be very hard. There is a difficulty curve that you have to get over and there is a period of getting used to and understanding the game. Once you do though you start to love the game, the rhythm of the battles, the feeling of overcoming a boss, the aggression and adrenaline during a challenging fight. I love the line of "I'm good at dark souls but this game sucks cause I died like 20 times to a dumb boss", it's people expecting to be good at this game and getting frustrated when it's not a dark souls rehash. It's honestly their loss not giving this game the necessary amount of time. I'm glad this is not a dark souls rehash and what they have made. I usually never replay games, even if I love them, but this one is an exception. From Software has really raised the bar as a game company. Expand

Sekiro shares some "from software feeling" with Dark Souls, but is very different. The emphasis is on learning how to fight with the katana, blocking, deflecting, dodging and countering attacks. As you progress through the game you learn new techniques which you can apply in the correct situation. I love the worlds and plots of the souls games but at the end of the day I love these games because the combat is amazing, and Sekiro has easily the best combat of any game I've ever played. You are limited to one weapon this time, but the things you can do with it combined with the combat arts and special techniques makes sure it never gets boring to use. Most people only use a few of the many weapons in the previous games anyways, so I don't mind this change as much as I thought I might. The movement changes are a lot of fun and make the way you can interact with the world so much more fun. The areas are some of the best designed in fromsofts games. It being such a different style of world to Dark Souls and Bloodborne makes it feel fresh again. Where certain areas in those games felt like different versions of themselves. Like the poison swamp areas and the catacomb areas, and the lava areas, etc. The main flaw of the game is the way it's balanced, certain abilities and prosthetics feel like there's no real reason to use them. I like all of the characters a lot, but their side quests could have been done better. Sekiro had the most intuitive side character quests of the fromsoft games which is a good thing. Previous games required a guide or hours of wandering around to progress. I love the more direct method of story telling Sekiro has as well. Expand

    PROS

This game strips down most of the extras from the previous From Software games, and instead refines the core fighting mechanic for a singular fighting style. Fully embracing hyper-aggression, without letting it become attack-spamming by means of the posture system.
These changes lead to there being a correct way to play this game, and your journey as a player to master the mechanics is mirrored by Sekiro's journey to become a master shinobi.
The ways to cheat this natural progression are reduced: you can't summon other players, and both over-leveling or building a tank are no longer an option.

It's truly up to you, and the only true defeat is giving up. A great metaphor for life.

Admittedly, the only reason I pushed on past the first 10 hours was to beat the game and then give it a negative review. I was a late bloomer in regards to the gameplay "clicking" for me. I didn't start to master the gameplay until 25 hours into the game. Once I became very comfortable and confident with the mechanics, the fun factor of the game sky rocketed.

I have played Sekiro 5 times to completion, back to back. It is one of the very few games that I cared to get 100% of the achievements. Sekiro sets the bar for all future third person melee combat games, and that bar is extremely high.

From Software didn't disappoint like always. Just when i thought the combat couldn't get any more better they hit me with a variety of new tools and ways to resolve problems in game. The combat is fast paced and there are many ways to tackle the same enemy depending on how you want to play.

What a beautiful game! It's so difficult at first but all you need is some patience and resilience if you want to beat the game. Moreover, Mouse and keyboard make this game sufficiently harder rather than the controller counterpart. Once you learn how to deflect at the perfect moment and learn the enemy's weaknesses -- everything will be much easier.

Sekiro is a great adaptation of the slow and boring combat in Dark Souls.
You are forced to play aggressively and blocking isn't the best way to defend yourself. You better try to dodge and counter-attack or deflect it (there is no parry like in Dark Souls).
Once you get the hang of it, you simply don't want to change back to Dark Souls, it least I couldn't. But to compare DS and

Once you get the hang of it, you simply don't want to change back to Dark Souls, it least I couldn't. But to compare DS and Sekiro is a dumb decision since Sekiro is by all means NOT a DS title. There is no Co-op or multiplayer nor Armor/ weapons to choose from. The game is also not "dark", sometimes the World looks actually pretty nice and colorful.

Some Boss designs are like boring normal Samurai (they still punch hard), but sometimes they have a Souls-like design (Hugh and scary/non-human). But still, each Boss has a unique move-set which you have to adapt to.
You don't need any prosthetic tool to defeat a boss, unlike stated in other posts. I actually missed "the most important ones" in my first playthrough (like the firecrackers).

Even though the combat might frustrate you first, keep playing. You will get better over time, especially if you have played DS recently (Sekiro uses different buttons for E.g. healing). If after like 5 hours you still don't like the game, stop playing for a few months. I got the hang of it in my third try.

All in all, I really started to love the game in my third try, especially the combat-system. It is now my favorite game, even though I really disliked it at first. You should definitely buy it, especially if you find it on sale (there is a patch coming at the end of October 2020, maybe they will also start a sale).

Here are some statements from other posts:

-Input lag on Pc: I could not feel any input lag

-Strange Hitboxes: Sometimes yes, but it is common if you doge a sweep attack or try to jump over a thrust attack. So it should only appear if you do something wrong.

-You can die in 1 or 2 hits from a Boss: Yes, this can happen. Especially in new game+.

-You lose 50% of your exp and money with no means of getting it back: You only lose exp between your skill points. You can buy coin purses. They cost 10% more, but they will not disappear.

-60 fps cap: Yes, but you can install mods (nexus-mods with Vortx) to get rid of it. That way you can also install custom shaders

-Poorly explained mechanics and system: Right, some tips are only on the loading screen or hidden in the item description or are completely missing.

Now I went for the third time and started again and lo and behold, I began to like it, and I really like it. All who whine that it is impassable you just need to adapt and study the enemy's attacks. I write a review right after the murder of Isshin Asin, this was the best boss fight in my entire life, I even somehow remained with 5 flasks of medicine. XD The plot is similar in structure to dark souls, the same unfriendliness, a small narrative of the plot and understanding it through objects. But the most interesting thing is that even a chip with constant rebirths and repetitions of the world. Just great! Expand

With a unique fresh combat system, that feels similar to Dark Souls and Bloodborne, yet, completely different so that you can't rely on your former muscle memory.

This time, combat evolves around parrying your enemies attack to break their posture. The game manages to make you feel truly satisfied when over coming a mini or true boss because you've mastered his move sets and timings.

The game feels too hard at times, especially towards the end, but that's only because no other game you've played before requires this kind of input. I needed 4 hours, including grinding for more attack power, until I finally beat the last boss for the first time. Now I kill him almost always on my first attempt. The game offers you subtle ways to make the game harder, in one way with an item that makes enemies hit harder, while also giving more reward, and another way is an item which, when giving away, makes your blocks (or not perfect parries), deal a little damage to you (this one is only unlocked after beating the game once and carries over even to a new save file, I guess so new players won't accidentally make the game harder than it already is).

The game could use a bit more polish with some mechanics, like the special abilities and your secondary weapons, for they don't feel all useful and you might only use 2-3 of the available options (there are plenty of skills and secondary weapons, you might stick to a certain set for your play style the whole game through).

Nothing negatively mentioned would be worth reducing the points for the whole game is such a great experience that nothing else could compare to it. So far, there's only one game only announced where you play a humanoid monkey, that has the looks as if it will play like Sekiro, so Sekiro holds a candle of being yet another unique master piece from the Dark Souls makers.

Don't go in expecting a Soulsborne game.
You don't get to customize your character.
You don't get to just use any weapon.

That doesn't mean it is bad. In fact, I think it's a brilliant move. FromSoft has set a narrative with this that makes for a -real- story to be told with the player, rather than AT the player like in other FromSoft titles.

It was a bit overwhelming in the very beginning for me (and I've never played a Souls game before) but after some time I got used to the flow. And when you get the rhythm, it becomes the dance.

Fast-pacing engaging combat which requires your concentration and punishes you for your every mistake. It plays fair and teaches you to fight perfectly and if you learn your lesson it will be the most satisfying combat ever. Very fluid animations and clashing sounds which become the music. But katana is not your only weapon, you can use tons of tools fit into the prosthetic arm, both offensive and defensive. Or you can ignore them completely and only use your sword. It doesn't have the variety of customization like in an RPG, but what it has, it is made perfect.

Yes, it's hard, it requires you to 'git gud', and you will die a lot and suffer. I had so much rage during some of the fights, yet I have never even considered a rage quit. The learning curve of the difficulty is quite balanced: once you start to feel comfy, it gives you another challenge. So you'll never get bored, even after beating the game: you can go for additional NG+ playthroughs and make the game harder (yes, harder). Just give up Kuro's charm and ring the demon bell ;D

But besides the combat, this game has some more to offer. The stunning visuals of mountainous Japan, filled with gorgeous castles and temples, detailed armor of human warriors and fascinating creatures, which, as I suspect, are inspired by Japanese mythology. The game on the whole feels very Japanese, but it doesn't require you to know almost anything about their culture beforehand. The story is clear and quite linear, yet you can have 4 different endings. There are not so many characters, but each one of them has a story to tell. Plus some pieces of lore can be found in item descriptions and environment. If you pay attention the lore becomes more deep and complex.

Easily one of the best (or even the best) game I've ever played. Well done, FromSoftware.

So I finally picked up Sekiro expecting to get demolished, but figured I'd finally try it out. I put it off for so long because I was told it's all about the parry, and I was terrible at Dark Souls parry.

But guess what? It's waaay easier. Just the game as a whole. Not in a "too easy" way. It's still Dark Souls hard, but the parry system is much more forgiving and I'm actually pretty good at it.

The moral of this long post is; if you sucked at the parry in Dark Souls and are staying away from Sekiro because of it. Don't. It's awesome, and is completely different.

This game isn't like a Souls game, in fact its nothing like it. If people say Dark Souls is hard, then Sekiro is unbeatable. After beating Sekiro it really put into perspective how "easy" the souls games are. People take for granted how many tools and assist's you get throughout the souls games, magic for being able to cheese bosses, buffs to speed up kills, leveling stats to close the gap, summoning help from other players. All of these tools to help you beat any obstacle thrown at you and people still call those games hard, I was one of them, but after beating Sekiro that has all changed.

Sekiro rips away all of those tools to help you succeed and leaves you with only one thing, raw skill. The only way to beat Sekiro is to familiarize yourself with the mechanics and master them. No summons to help you fight the boss, no magic to cheese from far away, just your raw skill and determination. This game will push you to the limit, it will break you over and over again until you either push past your limits, or crumble from defeat. This game will make you relearn all over again how to play, in all honesty you'd be better off playing this game before any other souls games.

If you're like me and so many others that have put hundreds of hours into the souls series then you will have an especially hard time with this game. All of those hours perfecting the mechanics and getting in the play-style of playing defensively, staying back and waiting will completely and utterly ruin you with this game. This game will force you to forget all of your previous knowledge and relearn everything. If you don't master the art of deflecting, counterattacking, and taking advantage of enemies you will not be able to finish this game. But once you do master those arts, oh my lord is it satisfying. Finally hitting that moment where you perfectly deflect a bosses entire chain and get the deathblow is one of the most satisfying things I have ever done in a video game. Getting to that point where you completely and utterly destroy a boss with perfect deflects and counterattacks will never cease to make me feel like a badass. This game is a master of making you feel like you are truly good at it, as well as making you feel like you are truly god awful at it. It will test your will, and if you pass, will make you feel like you can take on anything.

It's hard, but try to not go into this game thinking its going to be another Dark Souls experience, because you will be sorely mistaken and frustrated. This is not Dark Souls, this is Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and if you don't come to terms with that then you will not enjoy this game. Great game over all though, and the combat is really satisfying, performance is good but not great, try it if you like being actually challenged and tested with all of your skill.

Sekiro is the type of game that pushes you to your limits, you hate it, but then you realize you've been falling in love with it. It's one of the greatest experiences gaming has to offer, overcoming the impossible, not because of an XP system or leveling up, but because you grew up as a shinobi, your skills got better, you started getting the hang of the game, you became the shinobi.

    + Awesome OST
    + Top tier gameplay
    + Shinobi boy
    + Difficult
+ Japanese lore, and setting, LOVE IT!
+ Long, but not long enough to fill the void that IT will create :(

    - The monk is using hax I swear
    - You won't find a game quite like it, so the hollow feeling will last. Forever.
    - not long enough to fill the void of finishing it :(

    10/10 a Masterpiece

There’s no leveling (in Soulsborne sense of the word), no covenants, no multiplayer, no variety in armor and weapons. It could be written off a stylistic choice, if the rest of the game didn’t feel very similar to the previous FromSoftware games. But it does, so Sekrio comes across as rather shallow. Sekiro Shadows Die Twice is a milestone in the genre. It offers complex, stunning and precise sword fights and duels that its predecessors lacked, and from which its successors will have to keep up with. You no longer simply learn by repeatedly and unfairly dying, but you refine your talents as a player. You seek unique methods to overcome each boss, rather than just rolling at the right time before spamming a few hits.

Dozens of hours later, we're still not sure how we feel about it. It's a game of contradictions, open and flexible in its level design, yet resolutely strict in its combat... It is a brilliant game, that is certain. but it is often a difficult one to truly love. Naturally, we can't put it down. [Issue#332, p.104]
