May 21, 2021Soulstorm dares to be bold with its 2.9D presentation, which brings a lot of life to the scenery. The soft reboot has deviated considerably from Exoddus, which is based upon, with a more cinematic approach and new gameplay mechanisms. We miss the late-90s level design of Exoddus, but we loved Soulstorm for its odd-acity!

Apr 21, 2021Oddworld: Soulstorm is a great game. A tough one for all those looking for a challenge. It is both a wholly new experience and a familiar one in the same breath. While a few minor bugs plagued me at times and the games’ difficulty throwing me for a few loops, Soulstorm is a solid experience. It’s a much more thought out experience, much closer to the original idea the team at Oddworld Inhabitants had for it way back in the early 90s. Whilst still retaining some of Exoddus’ flair and charm.

Apr 12, 2021Oddworld: Soulstorm offers a refreshing take as a reimagining of an old classic. It provides platforming goodness, a bit of trial-and-error with situations, lots of secrets to find, and thousands of Mudokons to save. Sadly, it does have some noticeable shortcomings related to its controls, friendly AI movement, and save system.

Apr 13, 2021Oddworld: Soulstorm isn't without its issues, but the good far outweighs the bad. Its crafting system will prove controversial, but it is an overall boon to the game. A visual treat through and through that hits its stride after the first few levels.

Apr 13, 2021Oddworld Soulstorm modernises and reimagines the series classic gameplay, but doesn't hold back on the difficulty.

May 4, 2021If you’re looking for a new Oddworld experience, then Soulstorm will likely scratch that itch. However, Soulstorm is far from being the 1997 sequel you might know and love. While a lot of what makes Oddworld wonderfully “odd” is still intact, Soulstorm’s experimental nature is almost a detriment. Nevertheless, being able to step into a new Oddworld experience in 2021 is something to behold. Soulstorm might be a little rough around the edges, but hopefully, the game serves as an experiment to determine the best direction for a brand new Oddworld quintology.

Apr 20, 2021Oddworld: Soulstorm is an experience that finds the right point between the nostalgic and the modern. The pacing is sometimes too slow and we can't ignore the repetition of mechanics, but even with these shortcomings it is still a highly recommended title. Fans are undoubtedly going to love it.

Apr 16, 2021Soulstorm offers a good rewriting of Abe's Exodus with updated graphics and gamepaly. For sure, it's a common die and retry game, but the variety of situations proposed is modernizing this old concept. With an IA sometimes full of bugs, the title is also a bit repetitive, but we still get attached to the destiny of this oppressed people superbly highlighted. Soulstorm is nevertheless an addictive experience if you accept its proposition.

Apr 9, 2021More than any of that, saving the Mudokons from their cruel punishment provides the reason for these games to exist in the first place, and the reason for anyone to spend all this time and effort resurrecting a 1990s game and bringing it blinking into 2021. Slaves travelling in cattle cars, people left to die by the side of the road, toxic big business rolling the environment up and smoking it, the various opiates of the masses and their uses and abuses - the enduring point of Oddworld is that its most horrific elements are not remotely fictional, and that it uses fantasy to refocus our attention on the bizarre horrors of our own world. Back in the day, Oddworld seemed to want more from games, and from its players and it still does. That's worth giving it a little leeway on the rough edges and mis-steps, I reckon.
