Oddworld: Soulstorm is undoubtedly the best-looking entry in the series yet, with dazzling cutscenes and beautiful environments. However, when it comes to gameplay, Oddworld: Soulstorm comes with a lot of bugs, and clunky and confusing controls. This made the overall gameplay more sluggish and cumbersome than it ought to be, and, in turn, made tricky levels frustrating and tedious rather than pleasantly challenging.

We are definitely pleased seeing the return of Abe, one of the most beloved heroes of the PS One generation. We are more than pleased that it retains the essence of the gameplay while also modernizing it. We are thrilled in the prospect that Abe’s saga will continue. At the same time, we really hope that the next adventures will be accompanied by more reliable gameplay mechanics and less of the tired industrial environments.

Oddworld: Soulstorm is a fantastic modernized remake of one of those side-scrollers that we remember as great but the original doesn’t hold up. Although it can be an aggravating slog to get through its escort quest-heavy levels, it’s also a unique, delightfully bizarre, and utterly rewarding experience with a fantastic story and a lot of heart. Of course, it also has far too many bugs that force restarts to circumvent, and that can turn the frustration of a good challenge into the bad, controller-throwing kind, and the sound design is all over the place.

A great story and lively characters combined with fun gameplay make Oddworld: Soulstorm a successful remake. But the checkpoints quickly become a chore, due to the extremely annoying crafting-system, which can make some passages irritatingly frustrating.

Oddworld Soulstorm is a strong follow-up to New'n'Tasty!. It's bigger, very clever, offers some some great new mechanics and its world is still incredibly charming and relevant. But, sadly, it lacks some polish and can be very frustrating because of its bugs or A.I. issues. Only the bravest will succeed in saving all the Mudokons, But in the end, it will be worth it.

Oddworld: Soulstorm's charm, characters, and sincere narrative are imprisoned within buggy, erratic software.

Though plodding and slow-paced relative to modern stealth games, there is something satisfying to its puzzle-like approach. Unfortunately, it's hard to see the good through issues with the AI, frustrating checkpointing, and technical troubles. Oddworld is an interesting world and I hope we get to see the rest of Abe's saga, but the series needs more than a new coat of paint to breathe new life into the series.

More than any of that, saving the Mudokons from their cruel punishment provides the reason for these games to exist in the first place, and the reason for anyone to spend all this time and effort resurrecting a 1990s game and bringing it blinking into 2021. Slaves travelling in cattle cars, people left to die by the side of the road, toxic big business rolling the environment up and smoking it, the various opiates of the masses and their uses and abuses - the enduring point of Oddworld is that its most horrific elements are not remotely fictional, and that it uses fantasy to refocus our attention on the bizarre horrors of our own world. Back in the day, Oddworld seemed to want more from games, and from its players and it still does. That's worth giving it a little leeway on the rough edges and mis-steps, I reckon.

Absolutely perfect continuation of a beloved hidden gem. The graphics are amazing, art style is mind boggling. Absolutely love this.

-jumping is very meh, really, double jump? and even that is pretty poop
-crafting doesn't suits this style of game, and also pretty boringly made here

Oh and exodus was supposed to be rushed (thats why they made this with different story), this is even more so. It had so beautiful atmosphere and levels that this is absolutly missing (I mean like art style and level designs).

It is basically designed around being killed off numerous times as you memorize each level before you are able to get through it.

I did not see the creativity that made the first one so iconic.
