This... is not a good game. It's too long, too tedious and it's just waterdown version of previous games.
Definitely the worst in the series

I think a lot of people are disappointed with this game simply because it can't live up to nostalgia of playing when we were younger. I can't believe I'm giving this a 6/10 since it feels like I have been waiting for it's release for so long and I wanted to love it.

That aside I am open to a new way of playing the story of one of my favorite game series. My negative impressions are due to multiple examples of very poor game design and I feel like they really missed the mark in many areas. To avoid any form of spoiler I will speak generally, there are multiple instances in this game where you die by things that have no feedback that something is going to happen. This is annoying at best and infuriating after it happens 10 times in a row. (E.g level involving mortars, if you've played this level you'll know what I'm talking about. Yikes.)

There is no quick-save in this game, only checkpoints even though this feature was present in new n' tasty. There is an argument of quick-saving reduces the skill which is fair but no one is forcing the player to use it if they do not want to. The reason I find the lack of quick-saving so problematic is due to the looting & crafting in this game. You will grab loot out of lockers, boxes, trashcans etc and craft items from them. This element of the game is new and is very cool until you realize you need to repeat the task of gathering and crafting the items every time if you die and you didn't recently get a checkpoint. No player wants to perform the same monotonous task a dozen times.

Side note about crafting: Due to this games new found focus on crafting, the majority of it is bottle related. This aspect of the game is cool but the game quickly becomes a bottle throwing simulator to solve all your problems. Sometimes less is more.

As the player you have limited exposure to other beings in Oddworld, even less so than the Abe's Odyssey. The area of the level retains state when you leave and come back from another area of the map which sounds fine but is woeful practice. I had two situations where I had to restart an entire level due to a Slig I put to sleep and as soon as I returned from a secret area I would be gunned down immediately.

On to the positives, the game looks beautiful and the story is very enjoyable and in-depth. There are some janky fields of view due to the 2.9D view but for the most part I really enjoyed this aspect of the game. The cinematics are gorgeous and you can watch them like a movie with popcorn. This game is HEAVILY carried by the art team.

I feel that 6/10 is very fair rating for the current state of the game and once it has a year of QOL & bug fixes it will jump up to an 8/10. I would not advise purchasing this game in 2021.

Features of the original are gone or streamlined and the bugs make it frustrating at some points (version 1.08 at the time). For me this remake breaks all the rules that the original followed in order to be made and it feels like the game tries to please a wider audience. It seems like Lorne Lanning's universe is going through a George Lucas phase where he retouches his old master works before moving forward. Maybe this game will be remembered in the future how I remember exoddus but If you liked the beautiful and rich story of Soulstorm I encourage you to try exoddus, a game which developed in 9 months but had much cooler gameplay than a remake that took 5 years. Better challenging platforming and unique modern touches make this retelling of the second instalment of the Oddworld Quintology truly extraordinary! I wasn’t too sure on the crafting at first but when I tried it out it was super fun!

Visuals and level desings are breathtaking, phisisc of environmen makes this game more realistic.

Cinematics are amazing, they are telling us a lot about Oddworld universe. Every emotional moments are made pretty good, when there is a tention in cutsceen, we feel that tention, when it's sad, we feel sad, when it's terrifying, we are terrified.

Soundtracks are something that will make us feel tempo, tention and action. They are automaticly changing when we warn Sligs and when it gets calm.

Story and all the vibe of this game is so dark and mysterious. If you like that stuff, you won't be dissapointed.

Bugs are not something that would completly break this game. They are pretty often and dosen't make you reset all level.

My personal opinion : That's the best Oddworld game ever made and it's worth it to play

While definitely not perfect the new features Soulstorm brings to the Oddworld experience are fantastic, however Soulstorm also leaves behind a fair bit of what made the old games great.

Soulstorm is a really good game. The story is engaging, the cutscenes are beautiful and the gameplay brings a lot more variety to the table than New 'n' Tasty. The gameplay is quite complex by the end but slowly introduced throughout the game so it never gets boring. There are 1700 mudokens you can have fun saving. The bad ending was the worst one yet. However, bugs and (in my opinion) a questionable quarma system did cause me frustration during my playthrough. I can thoroughly recommend it though, and if it had less bugs at launch it would be an 9 (but the devs fix them super fast!)

    First off, the good:

The graphics in game are very nice and the marketing "2.9D" is surprisingly accurate, when I read that I rolled my eyes but the stages are expansive. You'll see something far far in the background, and sooner than you realise, you are standing there.

The gameplay has much more depth than any of the other games. You can now rummage through bins, lockers and use vending machines to find or buy materials that you can craft into various items, including fizzy drink mixed with mints (a grenade), a mine that stuns enemies or even a flame thrower on rare occasions. These add so much more variety and replay-ability that allow you to approach situations in different ways.

There is an acceptable variety of enemies including the brand new sleeches which add a fun mechanic, and multiple types of sligs and slogs.

The levels are INCREDIBLY varied. A fast moving train, an industrialised communication outpost, a burning fugitive hideout. There is a lot to see and you really get insight into oddworld.

The level system has medals which add replay-ability

I really looked forward to cutscenes and the story. It's the first game in years I've played and struggled to turn off.

The ending explores a new story arc which gives us an exciting future to look forward to.

No quiksave. I thought I'd hate this, but the checkpoints are close enough that it is rarely frustrating.

Absolutely awesome final level. I did not expect to go where we went.

    Now the bad things:

There are loads of bugs on launch. Without so many bugs it'd be a 9, but I need to give it one lower because they frustrated me so much. None broke my game but certain ones meant i needed to restart to checkpoints or levels. Mudokens not following or even appearing, sometimes not going into lockers or the portal really make it annoying.
However, on the bug side of things, patches are coming out very quickly.

Audio isn't spectacular. There is nothing at all wrong with it and some parts are cool, but no parts make me think "wow this is great sound" like games such as half life and portal.

The quarma system, in my opinion, isn't great. Sligs killed shows in the quarma bar so players may think that effects it when it doesn't. Minor spoiler about how to get the good ending: you need 12/15 levels with 80% quarma to get the good ending. I saved an average of 77% of mudokens each level but still couldn't progress until I went back to get more quarma. This would have been way less of a problem if some mudokens didn't just not go in the portal, or if I didn't have to replay levels multiple times due to bugs. It was tiring and made me want to stop playing.
Maybe, when most bugs are fixed, I'd prefer this system.

    SPOILER
The worst and bad endings cut the game short by 2 levels. I think this is a great idea for the worst ending as it gives you a consequence for your actions, but not for the bad ending. There is no way to finish the entire game and get the bad ending, so you know you'll get the good one. I'd rather the bad ending still allow you into the last 2 levels, but then have a worse outcome than the good ending

From all oddworld series this is the worse. (This game is more like and bottle throwing simulator.)
    The bottle/fire mechanics are awful.
You spend a lot (i mean really a lot) of time doing NOTHING just waiting for "lasers/lights" to look away. There is a lot of bugs in the game, your meditation thing loves to ignore targets, sometimes you die when you start your meditation and BOOM

There's a crucial "tie up a sleeping enemy" command that's incredibly frustrating to trigger. It wants you to be in some exact millimeter of screen, and then it'll still trigger a "pickpocket" command instead, since they're mapped to the same button. So it's just dumb luck whether the game launches the proper command, or gets you killed when the enemy wakes up. It's the same thing when dropping off ledges while stealth walking. You need to constantly do that very fast, but the game puts the stupidest ever "scared of falling" animation there when you're stealthed, giving the baddies time to shoot you dead. You can also climb down, but that triggers a "back up, turn and climb" animation which also gets you constantly killed. This is on ONE-Level ledges that are lower than the character's jump height! You should be able to WALK off those without pause.
Overall the game just feels unresponsive in a lot of subtle ways, like you're prodding an unwilling character along. Then you play a game like Dead Cells that's so perfectly responsive it feels nearly thought-controlled by contrast. Like the character is eager to do precisely what you want to the finest detail. I just wish all game devs would hold a summit and nail down whatever causes these differences in control schemes. That would be an advancement in gaming that would dwarf these resolution improvements everyone's obsessed with. Gimme a 1080p game that controls flawlessly over any other combinations of factors.

Gameplay 2/10: I side with the Sligs. Absolutely.
Mudokons that aren't throwing what they're given despite being set to aggressive behaviour and refuse to get into lockers (fixed by now per patch) don't deserve to live on. Especially after that level where you open the cells and Sligs start spawning left and right and your pals refuse to throw some candy at them... 'twas the first time I rooted for the Sligs picking off the fleeing Mudokons in the background one by one (after trying to save them all for a good 17 times).
Controls are finicky, especially Abe's vertical jumping with the left joystick (somehow worse that New n tasty).
Materials could be slightly more available in containers.
I love the puzzles but not every damn screen.
Have some jump and run segments where we only have to jump and run. And intelligently posess Sligs to kill them on other places. You know, like the original. And not search for the one switch while avoiding Sligs, Zappers and 12 hazards at once. Its too much after some time.
Missing a TON of promised features:
    a) Choosing your destination. 'Member when we would arrive at a train yard and could select the place we want to travel to next ? Now it's all predetermined
    b) Evolved Quarma system. 'Member that they stated ''If we killed bad guys, that's good Quarma, but cruelly killing helpless enemies would reward us with a great drop of our Quarma ? Along with this the line that ''ideally no one dies, let all Sligs live''
    c) Improved camera system. Dunno about you, in two occasions in-game I didnt see the Mud's because the camera was showing me a sheet of metal in front for example. Or the fact that you always see a rock or something in front of you when you reach the edge of a platform near these doodads. Why not pan the camera from behind Abe so that we can see where we're going?
    d) CHI CHARMS. WHERE ARE THEY ? THE GAMES' PROMISED SECONDARY ECONOMY ?
    e) New wildlife that's gonna scare the crap out of us. Dunno about you, the Sleeches were fecking lame. They actually threw out the creatures that frightened us the most. But who am I talking to after the debacle that scrabs, paramites etc became after Munch's Oddysee...

The game's NOTHING like the original vision you claimed it to be. Abe's Exoddus was a 9 month rush that came out more polished and with TONS of content compared to this.
1 point because it's Oddworld and they bring out 1 game every 10 years or so...

This game is loaded with bugs. Sligs will stop doing anything, the ledge detection will fail, and abe has fallen straight through the ground on multiple occasions. While you can always restart from the last checkpoint should something go awry, bugs occur just far too frequently.
Bugs aside, there are also a few sections that are the worst kind of challenge: trial and error plus rng. There's a section in the earlier stages where you must navigate a stage while being shot at by rockets. The behavior from the rockets seems to be entirely random and can't be planned for. It's pockets of bad game design that keep this from being a perfect game. It is however a really great game, though probably worth waiting a couple patches for because the bugs are rough.

Oh and exodus was supposed to be rushed (thats why they made this with different story), this is even more so. It had so beautiful atmosphere and levels that this is absolutly missing (I mean like art style and level designs).

Ever since it’s announcement I have eagerly awaited and watched the development closely. The art style is beautifully detailed, the gameplay is a kind throwback to its original tale (Oddworld: Abe’s Exodus) that has been expanded on to bring it into a new era of gaming. The story has maturely developed from its root, adding a new depth and element of mystery to where the future will take the series. Despite a few minor bugs on launch, patches were extremely swiftly provided to improve quality of life making this game a total 10/10. Not seeing this game through to the end would be a big mistake on any gamers part. The new gameplay elements, crafting of equipment and fluid movement only emphasises the great growth of this title, and the potential of future sequels. Thank you to the developers at Oddworld Inhabitants for this amazing experience. Expand

This game is a very fresh slice of oddworld with a whole pack of nostalgia too. Yes there are a few bugs, mostly graphical, but the gameplay is mostly solid, the challenge I wanted from a new Oddworld game. The new mechanics are a real improvement. Only negative comment is non-skippable cutscenes and hold button to exit hint screens.

Unskippable cutscenes. I lasted as long as when he tries to cut his mouth bindings during the intro and was crying from frustration having pressed and held every key many times to skip it. Not sure how close I was to the game starting but what I do know is that I arrived at the uninstall and refund procedure before I arrived at the game play.

If you liked Exoddus (like me), do NOT get this game. Simple as.

Expand

Extremely lazy port from consoles. Did not even care to add normal controls as if anyone on PC must have console controllers available to play this game

I wish I could say this was the best game I had ever played. Unfortunately there just a few to many rough edges for me to say that in full confidence. In short:
    Pros:
Beautiful graphical fidelity and aesthetics Really fun stealth Interesting story Well structured level design Amazing cut-scenes Surprisingly interesting friendly NPC interaction Satisfying enemy NPC interaction

    Cons:
Pretty bland soundtrack (shame considering the composer's work on the PS1 games)
    Somewhat wonky controls
Crafting system isn't all too refined
    Some pretty shameful glitches

85/100, can't wait to see how the Quintology continues. An absolute buy when on sale and still good value at base price.

Better than New n Tasty. The cinematography and the cutscene were so good, but i highly prefer the original Exoddus

As a huge fan of the original PS1 games, this new entry is a disappointment. The game and level design feels basic and ultimately isn't much fun. The overall package lacks polish and seems more like an alpha than a finished end product. The cutscenes are excellent, it's just a shame no other element of the game matches that level of quality.

Поиграл 1 час. Очередной безыдейный платформер, который не предлагает ничего нового. Также из минусов могу отметить, то что подсказки по управлению только с геймпадными кнопками, а также однообразные локации.

Why did their eyes stop glowing except for Malok? Where did General Drippik and Director Flag go? Why did you turn President Eslick into a woman? (Well, yes, this game was made in a progressive country where gays and lesbians are the norm.) If I played the original game with pleasure, then I forced myself to play this product **** As a result, when I tried to save everyone who could, the game gave me a bad ending. This was the worst game I have ever played. If I played "new n tasty" several times, then I will forget this game forever and never launch it again.

Oddworld: Soulstorm is undoubtedly the best-looking entry in the series yet, with dazzling cutscenes and beautiful environments. However, when it comes to gameplay, Oddworld: Soulstorm comes with a lot of bugs, and clunky and confusing controls. This made the overall gameplay more sluggish and cumbersome than it ought to be, and, in turn, made tricky levels frustrating and tedious rather than pleasantly challenging.

Soulstorm dares to be bold with its 2.9D presentation, which brings a lot of life to the scenery. The soft reboot has deviated considerably from Exoddus, which is based upon, with a more cinematic approach and new gameplay mechanisms. We miss the late-90s level design of Exoddus, but we loved Soulstorm for its odd-acity!

If you’re looking for a new Oddworld experience, then Soulstorm will likely scratch that itch. However, Soulstorm is far from being the 1997 sequel you might know and love. While a lot of what makes Oddworld wonderfully “odd” is still intact, Soulstorm’s experimental nature is almost a detriment. Nevertheless, being able to step into a new Oddworld experience in 2021 is something to behold. Soulstorm might be a little rough around the edges, but hopefully, the game serves as an experiment to determine the best direction for a brand new Oddworld quintology.
