This game was hyped up too much, it's nothing like it promised to be.
But! it has alot! to do, Explore planets, Collect things.. Nevermind.
But you've got a galaxy to explore, the updates are making things better.

I have not experienced any frame-rate drops, crashes, slow load times etc. It seems that so many people are trying to run this game on very dated and pathetic hardware that the game runs bad for them. I think they should have had a decent machine to run this game on before they have judged this game. This game has so much to offer. Expand

The steam page clearly says that you need a radeon 480 graphics card or higher, which it's nvidia equivalent would be about a GTX 960. Secondly you should update drivers once the game is downloaded and also check that have the latest version of visual c++ redistributable 2010.

I am writing this to balance some of the negative reviews. The game is being reviewed over and over again as all the things it is not, it is not being reviewed on the basis of what it has achieved.

Whilst it is not by any means perfect and I could make a huge wish-list of how it might be improved upon, the game offers wonderfully immersive worlds with a hugely atmospheric soundtrack.

The game has that same vibe that LucasArts The Dig provided many years ago and combines it with the sense of isolation and exploratory gameplay that Subnautica creates. Not a day goes by where I don't reach for the screenshot button to capture a new landscape, the fall of the light, etc. Running around the planets it is easy to forget that there is an algorithm creating them and that sense of exploration is where the game is sublime.

Where it falls down is in space travel and in the meetings with alien beings. This all feels 3rd rate and bolted on to the core element of planetary explanation. There is much that could be added to the games benefit, starting with some decent mapping, both on planets and in space.

Nevertheless, the game constitutes a massive achievement that will influence game design hereafter. Anything less than infinity is going to feel very claustrophobic from now on. Get out of your spaceships and see what is over the horizon, there is a very good chance that your journey will be exhilarating.

For those moaning about the price, it is worth remembering that before you were born I was paying £40/$60 for Atari VCS2600 cartridges; you should be jumping with joy at the comparative value this game represents. Nobody forces you to buy this or anything else.

So, if you want a space simulator, buy Elite or Star Citizen, if you want a space shooter give planetside a try. If you want the joy of exploration combined with the sense of isolation in 2001, A Space Odyssey, then No Man's Sky is for you.

P.S Although I have the high end PC I had some performance issues from the start too but was able to fix them expecting the graphical settings and finding out the the game set the monitor resolution to the wrong value, corrected it and now with everything on max the game is running smoothly with 75+ fps

P.S I just copy/pasted the same feedback I did on Gog and I have pre-ordered the game for 35$ and it worth the money

You see hundreds of reviews that say this game is awful. That it does not run. Its all BS. The first time i launched the game, i started on a planet next to my ship, but decided i'd turn the settings up to the max. I was surprised considering 90% of the reviews said it only got 30 on a good day. The game looked great, the planet i was on was full of life, its just great! I've played around 30+ hours so far and have warped 20+ times. I cant put it down, and once i figured out the basics, which did take me a little while, but once i did, it was great. Most people haven't even played long enough to actually get into it, they play for a few hours and go to a few planets and boom their bored, obviously not the game for them. There is always something new to do, with objective. I sometimes spend hours just colecting rare resources from a hostile planet to save up for a new ship, or just to build my wealth to buy equipment to warp to different types of stars. There is no reason for the negative reviews, because you all bought this game knowing exactly what you were purchasing. Sean showed a lot more than i expected him to, but it was mainly to calm the Nancys. The game is simply art, and if you didnt buy it purely for exploration, then i dont know what the hell you were expecting and could care less if you put it down and didnt touch it again. Overall, i enjoy the game, i am addicted and thinking about buying a gaming laptop so i can play it while at work, because once you get hooked, your hooked. Also, everyone needs to stop comparing it to other games, because this is nothing like other games, nor is it trying to be, your reviews are irrelevant. From what i saw in trailers, video game play and everything sean has said about the game, it is exactly what i pictured it would be, so if you were dissapointed than you clearly didnt read up on what you were buying. Good day nubs. Check out some screen shots ive taken here

The game will be a nightmare for completionists with OCD, because it's close to impossible to explore and unlock everything - the game is beyond gigantic, even though the content starts repeating after a while. Things that are not generated really stand out and same types of elements starts repeating after few hours.

Soundtrack is good, though sound effects might bug out some times and play animal noises even on planets, that has no life.

Game has some issues with controls on PC on release. Ship on planets controls weird and non responsive, fine in space. No head controls in ship with mouse/keyboard, but have some with gamepad.

As for technical issues, you need to turn Gsync off manually in config files, which is on by default and makes framerate horrible. After fixing that, game runs smooth even on GTX770 with everything maxed out. And game has some memory leak issues when playing for extended periods of time. Hopefully to be fixed in patches.

Overall game is very good despite issues. If you were expecting AAA scale GTA in space, you will be very dissapointed, because NMS was never meant to be anything like that. It's rather simple, relaxing space exploration game. It's still a small indie game despite having insane amount of planets in it. For hardcore sci-fi fans not Call of Duty crowd.

After you get about 7-10 jumps out from your start location, the game starts getting more challenging. Around the same time you'll most likely have mastered the skills needed to finish the trip to the center or whatever you choose to do in the game. The more you explore the more unbelievable discovery's you will make.

Despite all the negative crap this game does NOT deserve, you can endlessly explore to your hearts desire. There is always something new to see that other ppl have or will never see but that you can share your discovery's with others. The ships are all different, you will always find new ships, new planets, new animal life, plant life. Iv learned over 800 words across 3 different alien races so far. Iv named 4 planets out of the 30 plus I have discovered and look forward to discovering thousands more, Named sol systems, Animals, Plants whatever I want or you can choose to upload your discovery's without naming them yourself and keeping the name that NMS gives them. Iv Seen sunset and sunrise on alien worlds that stimulated my imagination. I fought Pirates in space and I swam with monsters in pink oceans, Iv explored endless caverns. Iv found monoliths from ancient alien civilizations and spoke with a space stations sized Atlas. The universe is endless yet somehow I dont feel the need to rush to end it, but the end feels within reach, the scale alone is mind blowing.

The game is amazing. It is worth the $60 price tag not just because its a great game, but because you know the game is worth it when the reviewers on steam are getting (20+ hours)!? Most ppl spend $60 on a game they get less than 10 hours and they give it a good review... If any reviewer has less than a 2 hours Dont even bother reading the review.

To many people jumped into No Man's Sky thinking they would get something out of it that was never really their and/or They cant run the game, cuz they are a bunch of NOOBS! "My Pc cant run it..."

Playability wise, the game is a little rough round the edges in places, but overall it is compelling. The procedurally generated landscape and creatures is the real star of the show, and it is impressive. The static content is less so.

    Overall I'm very pleased.

Space combat is more fun, and faster paced, than it was in elite dangerous.

Downsides are that the game is somewhat dumbed down to be 'easier' in some regards, landing/flying the ship makes it feel like it is on a rail, when you're trying to fly low. Trading is not really very useful since quantities when buying are low and prices unpredictable. It is exceedingly difficult to fly back to a place you've been before. And the UI could use work to become better. Also, the optimization may require manual tweaks to be good. None of these downsides seem insurmountable, and are what I expected after reading reviews.

I was hoping this would bring the console games a space sim they deserved but it would appear not, all i can suggest to them is if your on xbox get elite dangerous, and if you got a pc, get elite dangerous and wait for star citizen,

The lies from head of hello games are not being judge here however, simply because originally they may very well have intended to have multiplayer in the game but there could have been a factor that prevented it from being added to the game, unfortunately i dont think we will ever know, so they get a pass on that,.

    - simplistic flight model
    - repeating assets from which plants and animals are generated
    - and the damn inventory is never big enough
    - crafting upgrades for your suit, ship and omnitool can be a little tedious when you spend time mining, or looking for resources you need
    - graphics are nice, though the draw distance and pop-up clearly show this is a poorly optimized console port...

... and yet, since its release, I clocked in more than 40 hours and play whenever I can.

There is a delicate narrative subtly pushing story, should you accept Atlas's path.
There are mysteries that make you want to discover them (Who are Sentinels? What is Atlas - especially when you find your first Atlas interface? What is in the center of the galaxy? Where did Korvax come from? Why are Vyk'en regularly battling Sentinels?)
Each Monolith you unfold tells you either a piece of encountered species history, or a short story about yourself (my favorite one is the one when I encounter my mirrored image, who is identical to me except he has a better omnitool - and we trade them and I indeed get a better one!). Or, is just an interesting little story. These remind me of short sci-fi novels of 80s - they are very well written, intriguing, and can surprise you with fantastic things happening in them, though they are only short texts on the screen so if you don't like reading, you're missing vital part of the game.
As you travel and visit all the buildings on-surface - Data Centers, Production Facilities, Abandoned Buildings etc. - you have a chance of discovering recipes for crafting new materials, including Atlas Pass V2 and V3, though I am yet to find any of the aforementioned.
If you're lucky, you will find a broken down ship on a planet's surface and should it be better than the one you own (as was in my case!), you can repair it, transfer your cargo to the new ship, and fly off, sparing a lot of cash in case you wanted to buy ship of similar properties off an alien.

So, is it worth a buy?
No - if you expect Mass Effect in an open, proceduraly-generated universe.
Yes - if you can overlook some technical issues and still have the kid in you, that instead of focusing on how the game is working, simply enjoy the story and want to unveil its secrets. And - let's not forget - can spare 60€.

I give it 5/10 - 6/10 if the optimization issues are ironed out.

Hello Games really turned this project around. Game delivered on what was promised at this point in spades and much more. All other space exploration/crafting game devs should take a deep look on how to do project like this.
I would easily rate this game 10/10 but we should not forget the abysmal launch.

This game has risen from its own ashes. It is appreciated that the developers did not abandon it. And they kept updating it. To bring to the level of the players expectations.
Now he's totally worth his money.

Yes, the game had some performance issues at launch and yes it might be a bit overpriced, but people are bashing NMS for no real reason. They could just turn down graphics setting and play until everything is fixed, but that would be too much work... better refund and rate it 0, right?

Careful, personal opinion follows, might trigger people (if so, breathe slowly): I like the game, it's beautiful and atmospheric. I like flying around the different planets, gather materials and upgrade my gear. I'm 14 hours in and not bored. I like the "Out There"-ish vibe of the game (if unknown, check out Out There on Steam or smartphone stores). I like exploring things and the pace of NMS is just right for me. Also, my girlfriend never plays a game longer than 2 hours before she needs to take a break from it. I convinced her to give it a try and she played it for 7 hours straight. She never does that. This game is definitely not for everyone, but it doesn't deserve so much hate, people are giving it.

For me, No Man's Sky is a beautiful and passionate piece of art. See you along, space travellers!

    Dear No Man's Sky Haters…

    You. Yes, you!
The one screaming, "There is no gameplay!" and "They lied about the multiplayer!" and other slurs I dare not mention.

    Tread lightly.

You are one. We are hundreds, thousands. Millions. You aren't just IN the minority; you ARE the minority.

I don't feel awkward or anxious playing No Man's Sky around others, and your words don't affect me. Many others, however, are coming out of their shells for the first time in their lives. This is the first time many are enjoying the beautiful world that has been generated for us - and it IS beautiful. Incredibly so. DON'T ruin this for them.

We No Man's Sky fans may have our differences, but we will not hesitate to come to the aid of our fellow explorers, especially against someone who so virulently slurs that which has brought us all together.
Don't take this the wrong way. I don't hate you. I don't fear you.

    I pity you.

I'm sorry that you feel this way towards us. I'm sorry that No Man's Sky is such a bane to your existence. And I'm sorry that you are missing out on such a wonderful experience. Mostly, though, I'm sorry that you feel the need to go around and publicly chastise and berate others. I'm sorry that, to ensure your own validity, you need to make others feel invalid. I'm sorry that your self-worth is so infinitesimally miniscule that you have to make others feel less-than-human, at least in your own denatured mind, just to feel whole. I am truly sorry that day-in and day-out you have to put up with your worthless, meaningless, Shakespearean tragedy of a life.
I ask you politely to cease your unnecessary cries for attention, and instead invite you to join our ranks. Uninstall Call of Duty, start up No Man's Sky, and breathe in the splendour and the amazement of your first space landing, and then, maybe, just maybe, you'll see what you've been so hopelessly searching for this whole time.

On to the game play the game plays exactly as it was billed. If you have been following the devs and not the hype train you are getting exactly what was promised. A sci-fi exploration game with some crafting. Much like Elite:Dangerous. If that game was not for you neither is this one.

I dropped an 8, but that could easily go up if they increase the complexity of the crafting system. Currently it feels a bit on the shallow side, and the only upgrades are basically inventory upgrades that get chewed up by mods.

Conclusion: If your looking for another DOOM your going to hate this game, if your looking for a sci-fi exploration game and don't mind some simple survival elements you will probably enjoy this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

It becomes your planet. I love that sense of solitude, and the environments are often very beautiful. Just wandering around exploring is very good stress relief.

That said, there are many frustrations and disappointments. Inventory management is not fun, and that's a problem because gaining more inventory slots is pretty much the sole form of character progression. You want to craft upgrades, but every upgrade takes up an inventory slot that you can't spare. You want to craft a one time use bypass chip to unlock something, but first you have to destroy things to make room in your inventory. You find a cool looking crashed ship, but it's useless because the inventory is smaller than yours. You find a new multitool with more slots, but you have to craft all your upgrades again only to repeat the whole process an hour later. There's really no point in trying too hard to tune your upgrades until you max out your inventory slots. Gaining inventory slots one by one is a tedious grind, and yet without that, there's almost nothing to strive for.

Alien and terminal interactions are fun, but you begin to see the same logic problems cropping up over and over. I've used the same number to answer the exact same problem at least 5 times now. And while the landscapes and creatures are procedurally generated, there is a very small subset of buildings and interactive objects that you begin to see over and over again.

Other than naming things, there is no way to leave your mark in the world. You can't build anything. You can't change anything. I can't think of a single way to influence the world in any way.

There are achievements for scanning 100% of the creatures on a planet, yet there are always 1 or 2 species on a planet that are nigh impossible to find because they are so rare. It took me 3 days of flying around on the same planet before I finally completed this objective just once. Thinking about doing it again makes me want to stop playing.

Lastly, it seems like a pretty poor PC port. You may have to fiddle with the graphics settings before you can even get it to run (I had to enable Borderless Windowed mode), and even then the performance is not the best. I have been experiencing some kind of memory leak, where after several hours of playing the FPS tanks and I have to restart the game. Playable, but not impressive.

It's a fun game to wander aimlessly around. In fact I really enjoy doing that. But the moment you start to try to complete any of the games objectives, anything that makes the game an actual game, it starts to become a boring grind.

    Ok so onto the review:

How best to describe No Man's Sky? Well imagine if Spore and Minecraft had a really pretty baby. Unfortunately you cant build anything and are limited to crafting for upgrades so that baby is a bit handicapped but it's visually superior to both its parents. Not to mention the game world is HUGE, even on any individual planet. And no the planets are not exactly alike, if you've invested any decent amount of time into this game youll actually find some amazing variations. So far I've discovered a cold tundra world, a beautiful tropical world with red grass and water with aquatic lifeforms, a highly irradiated world with scarce amounts of fauna and flora, a volcanic world with predators, a toxic rain world and a beautiful green jungle world with some interesting land crustaceans. The surface buildings all look very similar but people seem to forget the fundamental focus of this game - exploration of the natural biomes. The buildings are recycled because theyre only meant to act as checkpoints and supply caches for your journey.

Now onto the space exploration. The space battles with pirates can be frustrating if youre not looking for them, especially as the only way to run is to jump to another system, and in order to recharge shields you have to do some menu fiddling and need a good supply of oxides. However, upgrades will make things easier and once you get past the bumps these battles add extra bit of content you needed moving from one planet to the next, and some nice material reward to go with it. The ship controls arent as good as elite but mining is a lot less frustrating since all the resources come to you automatically. The space stations themselves are all the same, but if you've played Elite Dangerous like I have, this is nothing new and to be expected. Again space stations are just a safe hub, theyre not the focus of the game, although admittedly they could be more varied like Elite. Space itself is not at the scale i was hoping for (again Elite did this better) - planets should not be this close together and space isnt this rocky, although this game doesnt label realism as a selling point so i can forgive this. My favourite about space is the seamless transition onto a planet. Landing on a planet seamlessly from space truly gives you a feel of scale, and, whilst somewhat overwhelming, its well-executed (providing your rig can handle it without exploding into a stuttering mess).

Ok so lets give a pros and cons breakdown.

    Pros:
Beautiful scenery, beautiful unique planets if you invest the time to find them.
Unique wildlife everywhere, including aquatic, land and airborne lifeforms, with great size variance.
Space gives a satisfying amount of depth and some content to distract you between planets.
The Atlas storyline route gives a primary focus and seems to reward the player with more interesting worlds so recommend following story route.
Exploration pays off if you invest the time into finding wildlife and waypoints. This should be your secondary focus, and you may find some interesting things along the way.
The crafting and upgrading system gives you a tertiary focus, so there's always things to do, even if its just collect materials.

    Cons:
Performance issues with vsync. I recommend turning off, maxing your framerate, turning on nvidia's vsync and tweaking graphics until the issue is resolved.
Crash on startup. Havent experienced this myself but Hello Games are working on a fix. It happens, no need to give a 0 for it but the devs should have been prepared.
Space scale isnt as good as elite's.
The ship handling is somewhat clunky.
    Buildings and stations are recycled.
The draw distance isnt great (might just be my graphics settings), you will constantly see rendering of nearby scenery everywhere you go, which takes away from the beauty a bit.
Some lacklustre texturing but given the scale I can forgive this.
No real tutorial - although not too difficult you're left to figure out a lot by yourself.
    Requires a hefty time investment.
Collecting the materials to warp to another system is tedious given the scale of the universe (at least in early game)
Lacklustre trading system. Ok so there are fluctuations from the galactic average but given the difficulty in finding materials to warp and lack of trade information for other systems i cant really see a benefit to playing this game as a trader, since every warp is a gamble on your cargo value.

    Final verdict: 7.

PS: If you're complaining that there's nothing interesting to do, you probably lack imagination or an appreciation of beauty, and you bought this game for the wrong reasons and clearly didnt do your research.

I have been playing NMS for about 20 hours now and I'm still enjoying dropping out of hyperspace, into a new solar system, and flying down to the planets surface to see what's there. There can be a sameness to many of the planets, but that makes discovering the unique planets all the more special. However, even on rocky planets, barren of life, I can still have enjoyable discoveries.

There can be a sameness to many of the planets, but that makes discovering the unique planets all the more special. However, even on rocky planets, barren of life, I can still have enjoyable discoveries.

On one such planet, I landed at an outpost and saw a nearby cave, full of red and green crystals that stood out against the barren ground. I went inside and discovered an odd looking cube sitting on the ground. I picked it up and discovered that it was quite valuable. So, I explored further into the cave, picking up more cubes until my suit and ship storage were full of them. Then I flew up to the space station to see how much I could make from them.

That experience was rewarding both in units and in fun. Moments like that are why I bought the game in the first place, and why I continue to enjoy playing it.

Sure, there are things that can take away from the experience. The ground and space combat are not very good. I can't stand how the game goes into a letterbox view every time you meet a new alien, or get a journey milestone. It's very intrusive and interrupts the flow of the game. The crafting / upgrade system is kind of clunky.

Despite some of it's shortcomings, I still really enjoy moving through the galaxy, making new discoveries, while gathering what I need to keep my systems functioning. I'm looking forward to seeing what Hello Games will do to improve on NMS, such as the upcoming base building and large freighters.

Update after 5 more hours of play: One complaint that I have read is that NMS doesn't have the large space battles, that Sean Murray said would be in the game. I just came out of warp in a new system and was greeted by a huge battleship, surrounded by several cargo ships, sending out a distress call. When I got closer, a box popped up in the lower right corner instructing me to protect the cargo ships and that there were 36 attack ships remaining. I joined the fight, but I haven't upgraded my ship for heavy combat, so things did not go well. I fled to the nearby space station. Once inside, the whole station would periodically shake from the explosions of the nearby battle. It was a pretty cool experience.

First everyone was hyped and they speculated this game will be more than even its creators have dreamt of. Now everyone is angry becouse it is nothing they imagined it would be. Thats not the point. Game is great.

I can not figure out how to get back to my starting system. I wish there was a way to tag it and move towards it.

    Runs smooth on GTX970, i5 4690K (oc'd to 4.1), 16gb.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is not for everyone, many people will feel let down by this game and angered about the lack of content, performance issues etc. However, I lowered my expectations and found this game to be a complete blast to play. The fact that you can explore an "infinite" universe really blew my mind and I still find it fun to discover new planets, atlas interfaces and black holes. The space combat is great and poses a challenge to me. Some of the game can be a drag such as finding resources that are few and far between especially when I needed Zinc for a spacecraft and there was no flora on the planet so I had to find a trading post to get it which took ages :( . I was able to run the game at 1080p maxed out on a mid range gaming PC it just seems like pot luck for now whether it runs well. I also experienced lag spikes when entering a planets atmosphere. Hopefully this is fixed soon. Overall this is a great (but not perfect) game that will blow your mind if you know what to expect. Expand

I've waited 2 years for this game, mainly because of the landing on planets. And for that this game delivers! I like the crafting, blueprint hunt, trading, finding resources, combatting sentinels and space pirates, scanning and naming planets and wildlife, learning alien words, flying in space.

I also really enjoy having my daughter (5 yr) exploring with me and naming all the animals :)

If you where expecting more of this game then you clearly rode the hypetrain for too long. That said there IS a lot of potential for this game. That's why I think for now 60 (Euro) is too much. In this current state 50 or even 40 would be better.

I've encountered 2 bugs so far. One is ALT-TAB breaks your game and sometimes when I fly away from a planet my ship gets 'transported' to space.

As far as the game goes, I am enjoying the diversity of landscapes, flora, fauna, ships, guns etc. I DO however see how many see things as repetitive, because they can be, but I have watched a broken game transform into an enjoyable playable game in only 5 days. I am very hopeful that upcoming patches, updates, and user-made mods will bring this game to its full potential . . . the game we all had envisioned when the first trailers were released.

I do realise it is quite a niche game, which is probably why some people have been disappointed, but if like me you are into 70's science fiction writing, it is like living in one of those books, one that never ends. Luckily, I've had no problems running this on my GTX 970 and I do feel sorry for those people with problems, but most of the reviews, have given this game an extremely low score because of these issues and I feel that is unfair. It is made by a small team who are doing their utmost to fix these issues, and they will be fixed. The controls, are a bit on the stiff side, but this issue is also being fixed. I just think it would be fairer for those people to wait a few days until these technical issues are ironed out (if that's your objection with the game),rather than giving a game you haven't even played a score of 1 or less. This small team has been working very passionately for the last 4 years on this game, and I feel they deserve more consideration. Well done Hello Games. Expand

The game is not bad, I think Hello Games had a very ambitious idea and couldn't deliver the game the way they wanted. My main complaints are the spaceship controls and the lack gas giants, brown dwarves, pulsars, etc.

I think it would have actually been good for the pc gaming industry as a whole if Hello Games had went bankrupt because of this. They deserved it.

This is an odd game, full of potential yet hollow and lacking of content. All those generated animals, plants and planet surfaces are nothing but a modulo on a pseudo-random generator someone chose a seed.

This is an odd game, full of potential yet hollow and lacking of content. All those generated animals, plants and planet surfaces are nothing but a modulo on a pseudo-random generator someone chose a seed.

Everything looks quite similar after a while and if it weren't for the milestones or achivements, I wouldn't have bothered with looking at animals at all. Plus, the game is full of transition animations: letterboxing on encountering an NPC, zooming out on the first save - all interesting in the first few hours but then the whole game feels like work I wanted to get over with.

Travelling between stars is also time wasting; I don't think the game loads but has a fixed delay no matter what. Also, there is no straight travel but from star-to-star so even with max hyperdrive, for each 1600 lightyears I got closer to the center by 600 lightyears (~300 jumps x 90 seconds? Gave up and modded it).

Traversing a planet is also tedious, slow walking speed and such, but just like with the Mako from Mass Effect, there is two side of it: the terrain. The fractal like structure generated really looks realistic, except I havent found any planet with miles of flat surface (that is not water).

Flying around is fun, not crashing at all, but often I really wanted to look down to see where I land. Given that, I wonder why there is no such thing as auto-landing near a point of interest or trade post?

The game lacks a ton of video-advertised features, some of them forgiveable while others are not. I believe many features didn't make the release because of stability or balance issues. However, the poorly designed UI has no excuse.

There is nothing really to own, no reason to hoard, there is nothing to go back for and once all languages, milestones and achievements have been reached in the current game, there is nothing to play for.

The inventory space is small but expandable relatively easily but I felt the stacking of resources is too low, plus there are items that don't stack for no apparent reason. In addition, the mouse handling is worst of both PC and console worlds: PC players have to hold a button like the console ones instead of clicking and console people have to move a mouse-like cursor?!

The graphics looked okay to me and the game was stable on my machine with GTX 660, but a GTX 1060+ really helps with smoothness and framerate. The sound is okay but some contextual ones are quite repeating after a while.

The technology seems to be there and hope they can expand it with more content, but note that they can't change the seed or the generation algorithm because that would break existing content (i.e., your current location generated a planet beneath you and with an update, the same coordinate is now within a space whale...).

Is it worth a full price? I don't feel so.

(Bought it 4 days after the launch, played the vanilla game for 6 hours, played another 50 hours with all sorts of convenience mods; reached the center and gave up for now.)

In 2016, most of the story was told by readable lores, distributed on planets. The only traditional “mission” in the game was The Atlas Path. I don’t remember how we got introduced to it, but people were already referring to the “mission” as “The Atlas Path”. Back in the day, we didn’t have the mission log, which is why I don’t remember how we got that name for it. The story was OK since it was mostly lore. Because of the thin story, I was actually quite attached to it, and even more attached to the story told through the Atlas Path and the associated Atlas Interfaces.

In mid-August 2017, I was already done with the Atlas Path (I finished it in December 2016). That gave me one single reward as well as an epic event that we still don’t really understand today. In the month of August, developers at Hello Games reworked the entire story (and added a bunch of fetch quests), and they kept doing it until 2022. Currently, the story is a weird patchwork of things we mostly knew in 2016 and it feels more like a long tutorial… Also, whether you are a newcomer or an old-timer trying to resume a playthrough; whether you play in “Creative Mode” or in “Normal Mode”; the storytelling doesn’t branch coherently.

Here’s an example for bug that has been around since 2017: Early in the game, a character will ask you about another character’s whereabouts, even though you haven’t met anyone yet. That same character will also explain to you that nothing changed in their space station, even though this is your first visit ever.

Such problems in storytelling feel immersion-breaking to me, and there are many of them during the entire game.

    ***

Community Management is next to non-existent, and developers keep changing the ways to play the game (also called “gameplay mechanics”), which often deprecate players’ play style and add bugs to other unaddressed bugs.

In 2016, again, the game was really simple. Too simple for some, but quite good to me, honestly. There was nothing much to be shared by developers, aside from Patch Notes that were explaining fixes or little improvements to the game. The game was difficult to master, but it was fun.

Soon after the release, they started adding things that were not even supposed to be part of the game, like the base building. I know this might be surprising to learn that base building wasn’t initially part of the “sale pitch”, but I invite you to look for that information on the Internet.

Progressively, each game update became a stressful event that could potentially change rules players were used to. I also have to mention that bugs were also a thing, but at least we had good support from developers through their ZenDesk account. I opened a few tickets, and most of them got closed at some point.

In mid-August 2017, developers at Hello Games made their first big update, called “Atlas Rises”, which reworked the story entirely (as I previously wrote) and had a major impact on my playthrough. The update introduced bugs and incongruities that are still present today. The most important problem (to me) is that the people who had previously completed the only mission of the game (The Atlas Path) had to redo it entirely, especially because of the new rewards tied to its completion. In 2022, the “bug” is still present for whoever plans to load an old save from 2016 (or from the first half of 2017).

Since late 2017 / 2018, developers are not closing ZenDesk tickets anymore, and they keep releasing game updates with new features that nobody ever asked. Free updates are nice, but they are bittersweet because a lot of old bugs are still unaddressed years after their appearance. Also, a lot of people complained when developers changed the way farming (which wasn’t announced in 2016) would work, or when they introduced energy consumption that broke existing built bases. Finally, in 2019, developers switched a core component of their game engine (an “API”) from one technology to a more modern one, which made the game literally unplayable for existing players who had very old computers. In 2022, those people still have to buy a new graphic card (or even a new computer) to play the game they bought between 2016 and 2019. What other game did that, I wonder?

The story that was OK in 2016 is now annoying and acts as a tutorial instead of a proper story. The gameplay and the level of communication between the players and the developers are regularly changing without any explanation and without any acknowledgement that they are effectively disrupting player’s enjoyment of a full-priced game. Those two arguments demonstrate that No Man’s Sky isn’t a finished game, and I think that anyone who’s thinking about buying this game, even in 2022, should be well aware of the situation.

    CPU: I7 5700HQ
    GPU: GTX 970M
    RAM: 16GB

*If you can't tell from the HQ I have a laptop, specifically a MSI Ghost Pro GS60.*

Let us start with a review of the game now:

    PROS:
    - Open ended exploration
    - Variety (Although a tad bit shallow)
    - SPACE
    - Technical Marvel

    CONS:
    - Some poor framerate
    - Hitches every now and again
    - Can be a bit repetitive

Ok, so there is the PROS/CONS in my opinion. The game is fun to me however, it scratches the itch of "What is over the horizon" or "I wonder what is in this system". The game is much more feature complete than Elite Dangerous is even currently and honestly is more fun, again this is just my opinion. I think so much of the straight up "Was lied to about multiplayer" and "DON'T BUY GAME IS TRASH" reviews are either blind hate, which is really understandable or just a troll. The game is a thing of beauty and at the same time so ugly. I think that given about a month or so it can become even more than what it already is.
One last thing is this, the game was developed by 15 people. No that doesn't excuse issues within the game but they are working on it as fast as they can. The devs at Hello Games do care about the game and the community and are trying. Remember that they are people too. Anyways, happy flying!

    TLDR;

    - If you like exploration/sim games, pick it up. You will love it! If not, wait a bit for a sale and get it later or just go play another game.

Recommendations: Rainbow 6 Siege, Starbound, Stellaris, really any other game that you fancy.

My only problem with the game: if they want to add more content in the future and if they still have trouble, why didn´t they release it, but not as a full game but as an Early-Access Title, I think this would have been more appropriate after reading that there are still so many problems/not att all content delivered yet

So i've put 5 hours into the game by now and i gotta say, it's solid and i am having fun.

If you are interested in exploring a lot, just crossing another hill to find something new, then this is a great game for you.

So go ahead and give it a try if you are interested in exploratory gameplay.

Other than that, NMS is all about exploration and joy of travelling. The scale is awesome, the world is fantastic and it gives you countless exploring opportunities. Although at times it may feel you are doing the same things but with a different skin, what hello games accomplished with such a small team is quiet a thing for itself. Other than exploration majority of time is spent either completing game's man quest (finiding center of galaxy) or upgrading yourself through farming material. Beyond this due to lack of multiplayer content the game doest have much to offer, sadly there arent much of survival mechanism in the game such as outpost crafting and so on. Which I hope hello game considers adding them as DLCs at least !
overall not a a bad game but it is not what we all expected either,

I loved it, not sure why its getting so much hate. Its a game that rewards your imagination, an there are characters and a story, they are just very subtle. I have played over 40 hours and have loved every minute.

Game crashed when I first tried it. Went in and turned off something called G-sync I believe it was, and the game ran fine after that. Actually a pretty fun game after putting about 10 hours or so into it. Lots of things to keep you occupied and not yet repetitive. Overall though, not worth $60.

The waypoint(4.0) update ruined what was an amazing game all these years. The game isn't bad. To be honest I think it's really playable and enjoyable. The only problem is the expectations given by developers. It just is not what they have been promising. Everything beside this is ok. I had a lot of fun playing it.

Well, the game isn't bad at all, however I was expecting more. It can be a little bit disappointing for those who are expecting for great graphics for example. At 1080p the image is a little bit blurry (and I know how to configure my graphic settings for god sake), feels like the game was ported (which is ridiculous.. we are in 2016). My vote goes for a 7/7,5.

Absolutely, hands down, bar none, the WORST storyline in the gaming history. Overall, I am very pleased with the game, but understand that this is a niche exploration game and that it may not be for you.

All I see on reviews are people experiencing startup issues or people who expected more than an exploration survival game. Go into this thinking 3D Starbound. I am having a ton of fun. Yes planets are all on "biome" but its not just flat boring. I had caves and canyons. There is always something nearby to go discover. I have a real hard time understanding what people expected vs what they are complaining about. This game is exactly as i imagined it and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface. I don't need a quest or my hand held to tell me what to do. This game doesn't leave you completely helpless. There are plenty of guidance hints given and always a marker to move you forward in your progress or next step/item. I know I'm not the only one saying this but if you do your research and are still interested, play this game and ignore the bad reviews. The only reason i'm not giving this a 10 is because I don't feel I've played this game enough to say its PERFECT 10 STELLAR but I am definitely enjoying myself and going back for more. If i can change my score later with time I will provide an update to my review and score. Go explore my fellow cadets. Expand

No Man's Sky breaks the record in falling short of the hype – which is an incredible achievement in the category of super ambitious space games. The huge universe is a repetitive, lifeless and meaningless place, no amount of random generated creatures can change that. The most unforgivable fail is making the spaceship such a pain to fly, which makes exploring the vast universe simply a chore. However, at its best the game is epic and many of the issues should be easy to fix, so this might not be the end of the journey after all. [Sept 2016]

While some poorly designed systems and mechanics chip away at your patience, the feeling of flying seamlessly from space down to a peninsula you spotted from orbit never fails to enthrall. [Nov 2016, p.106]
