The game has problems, but at least it deserves such an assessment because it gives a new experience, especially after numerous updates. It is a pity that the developers hastened to release.

It is 2022. September 6th. After over 200 hours into the game and 6 years of playing this game I can only say...man what a ride.
    In the Beginning:
Hello Games said "This is going to be the biggest and Best multiplayer space exploration game EVER Created!" It was the biggest Space exploration game ever created, and that was true. Still is. However, through many of the scary and crazy fan expectations brought on by pressure from the ad markets and the hype train caused by the trailer and the almost pushed-upon promises, the game was released...with less than half of it finished. It had a vast, beautiful, and atmospheric universe...With nothing in it, except bugs.
If it ended there, I would not be writing this in 2022.
After bad scores, and a flood and just the internet and world being extremely toxic, Hello Games has done what almost no game company had done before or since. (Besides CD Project Red with CyberPunk 2077) Hello games got to work, and went Dark.
Fast Forward almost a year or so and they came out with patch after patch, then an expansion. It added and fixed a LOT. But not enough for some people.
Then another few months, and ANOTHER expansion and patches all throughout.
They began talking again, taking user reviews and suggestions, and fixing their game. It took until now, and I know they are not done, but their game has undergone hundreds of patches or more and 20 of those were named updates. All for Free. Everything promised is now in the game. plus more. Multiplayer in an interesting way, a story, actually there's even side stories now. a player hub, freighters, base building in space, underwater etc...It still seems like there is a long way to go, though they are right now sitting at patch 3.99.1 as of August 19th. It will be releasing on Switch in October. I feel there is another Huge update coming from them soon with how things are going with more space customization. There is also many more modes to play, like permadeath, survival, creative, and Expeditions, which are completely multiplayer where you start out in the same place as everyone else at the same time. Plus you have co op as well. At it's core it is still the same game, so i would love more events to happen, actual NPC bad guys that have ground and space/air battle tactics, and something huge to happen. Even just bigger space wars, pirate groups and real factions added so the aliens feel more like they are a group. So like cities and the like. Did I mention you can become a mayor of a small settlement? No? Well you can lol and also send your fleet off to do missions. yes. Fleet. All in all I will give it a 9 because, Well Done Hello Games.

Spent a good few hours with it now and it does have that tiny bit of appeal that just wants to you keep going, just one more little discovery here and there before I leave the planet or even think about moving onto another system.

Runs just okay (I have fairly old hardware but not ancient) however for what it is I'd have expected better personally (I mean Ark: Survival evolved runs a lot better than this at twice the resolution lol) while being 10 times prettier and with probably 100 times more colours in its palette). It sure isn't going to win any princess awards but that isn't to say it's ugly but at best it's maybe the average girl you knew at school.

In playing it though I found it was a lot more involved than what I thought it would be in some areas while also not being very deep or as engaging as I had hoped for in others. The ships handle like crap forcing you upwards if you dare aim too high (no mofo, I don't wanna leave the planet just yet) and also preventing you from just hovering around at stand still when you're actually just wanting to scout specific areas on a planet (this works okay once in space though).

The inventory management is just pretty awful with UI that shifts beneath your movements (I'm using a mouse but I believe it's true of all control versions) and if you're comparing ships with large inventories (and then trying to move stuff across) it just cuts off a bunch on the sides. Another minor issue is that I constantly get a reminder to redeem my pre-order DLC for a ship that is far worse than the one I have now (I just didn't want any special bonuses at start you see).

Overall though I've enjoyed some bits and found that perhaps like others I had just gone in with unrealistic expectations. This would have been okay with it coming it at half of it's current asking price but at a full priced AAA game I feel it's just a pure cash grab primarily driven with Sony being at the back door (as usual) pushing it far more than it deserved to be.

The FOV settings don't actually give you the angle that you expect so instead you'll have to resort to editing one of the config files if you want anything that closely even resembles what should be standard on PC (i.e. I set mine at 125 which is probably closer to 90). Having to hold in your action button (left click) to change settings is also just stupid - I'm okay with this for the in game activation stuff but on the settings screen when you first start it's absolutely stupid.

The map just sucks too. So you move your mouse along to the path to highlight a direction and if you move too much before you know it it'll have jumped along to the next system again in that path (so very obviously created primarily with a controller in mind).

A neat sort of little trick I found was sprinting and then using the jetpack just before you run out of stamina...jetpack in bursts (while at the same speed that you were running at) to keep from getting to high and then just as you land toggle the sprint again. Still awfully slow if you've wondered too far from your ship and that's probably one of the things that helped for the boredom to set it quicker than what it should.

Blah blah blah I've gone on too long. It's okay to mess around with and maybe it'll get better later on but right now it's no where near worth the current asking price.

When you charge premium money for a game then people have a right to set reasonable expectations for that kind of experience. No Man's Sky fails to live up to that expectation and publishers should stop trying to get away with it.

No loading screens... warp scenes are very long loading times
Realistic physics... blow a hole in rock formation and its left hanging in the air isn't realistic physics
Multi-player... um... did I miss it somewhere?

What it looks like, is the dev team bit off more than they can chew. Seems they decided it would take too much to do this game as it was original portrayed, so they released a tech demo with a few bolted on game play elements.

Hell, this is so un-optimised it plays poorly on a 980Ti, and the longer you play, the worse the game FPS becomes. You have to restart every few hours else it becomes unplayable.

My advice is wait till its in a humble bundle or less than $10 on steam.

Firstly this upscaling 720p into 1080p graphic is absolutely horrendous. In regards to that, anti-aliasing option is simply not working, and being completely left off. I can’t endure those jaggy edges and blurry graphics. It can simply make you blind, even i feel like high after 1-2 hours session. Seriously there is something wrong about graphics apart of technical flaws. If not for the games like this (AAA priced ones!!) why do we buy GTX 1080 and pay £600 for that, right?

Second important thing needs to be addressed is that Hello Games decided to hire a QA team right after release…What about before release? Can’t you just test the game before release it! Isn't that more professional way to do it! I understand that low budget companies sometimes do not invest into it, instead they try to sort it out inside the company. However, if you charge AAA price to a game, perceptibly people expect some quality in it.

Everybody has already mentioned about technical problem, and some sort of troubleshooting so I skip that. Most of you have got literally 2-3 hours before a bed time after work, dinner, gym..etc . If those hours are very precious to you, i strongly recommend to not waste it with this game at its current stage! Otherwise, you force yourself to play it just to ease the pain of £39.99..

However, there are couple of things that i like in this game. if you are a Sci-fi fan like me that would be worth to chase the root of alien civilization by reading lores and following the routes of atlas guidance. So there is no story line but game pushes you to find out. I admit I like this hidden concept however it is still too hard to navigate in galaxy map due bad design and framerate drops. I also have some hopes that in future we will get some different generated planets like giant mountains , lava, gas clouds..etc, PVP battles, storyline, patches..etc . Hope, they somehow deliver it!

I hate that I have to give this game a 1 and I know that by most metrics it does not deserve that: it is functional. It is a game that is finished. But the problem is that the game we have is not the game we were promised.

The short version is this: No Man's Sky gets a 1 from me because of the disappointment factor. It is the single most disappointing video game experience I have ever had and it's entirely the producer's fault.

The hype began three years ago (same E3 that first teased Bloodborne if I recall correctly) and it looked amazing. It looked like Minecraft, Subnautica, Mass Effect, this sprawling survivor space adventure unlike anything we had ever experienced and what's more, it was advertised as such. There would be EVE like space interactions (we were told after all that this would be a multiplayer game) and I was excited. I followed the hype and was so excited for this game.

I pre-ordered it and on midnight of release for PC I installed it.

The first few minutes were troubling and it quickly turned devastating. There is nothing to do. You mine but cannot build much. You discover but cannot share with anyone (turns out Multiplayer does not exist). You learn alien words but the interactions with aliens are flat and uninspired. The most exciting thing that might happen is you accidentally shoot a sentinel: the dull and lifeless protectors... or something... of every planet in the universe.

What is so disappointing is how easy that would have been to correct. The set up for great plots are there: what are the sentinels? How are they everywhere? what's the deal with these aliens? What is Atlas? There is so much and yet the only hint of a plot is to continually slog away through procedurally generated planets until I guess you can reach the universe's core.

The only merit this game has is to drive home the stark, existential reality of space travel. That we are surrounded by such vast nothingness and I suppose in that way it's a moodily artistic commentary on life but not one that is worth 60 dollars. The price is borderline theft. This is not a triple A game and Hello games has a very long way to go before it can consider itself a triple A producer. This tremendous failure of a game (in that it has failed to deliver on any of its promise) will be an obstacle that they will need to work a very long time to overcome.

(PS, I love that I can check a box for spoilers. As if there's any story here to spoil at all)

Game gets boring and repetitive after just a few hours, missing lots of features which were promised to be there. The game itself doesn't deserve 0. I'm quite sure some people will find it entertaining, but I'll rate it 0 because of the false advertising and lies from developers, which I'm sure misled many people who bought it.

This game has a few small problems and one big one. I'm gonna start with the small ones:
    - It's unoptimised and it runs like ****
    - What's wrong with just clicking things? Why do I have to click-and-hold-until-a-bar-fills-up to do anything? - I like to play while listening to podcasts and while you can mute almost everything, you can't mute the voice that constantly talks to you.
Hearing "Item received" while you mass-craft things every 2 seconds is annoying as **** and you can't mute it.
    - The game doesn't do a good job explaining even the basic gameplay mechanics.
    - You can't alt-tab it. If you do it will crash and restart which is annoying as **** since I like to alt-tab all the time.
    - Why are the "achievement" moment unskippable? Again, annoying as ****.

Most of those things will hopefully get patched or fixed at some point. There is however a one, big issue I have with this game:

It is a giant farm fest. That's literally all You ever do. Just far, farm, farm and the farm some more. You're constantly forced to farm massive amounts of stuff just to get around. You need resources all the time, to fuel Your ship, fuel Your life support, Your weapons and the game is constantly nagging You farm some more. It is boring as ****.
Maybe they can balance it better in future updates but as it is I can't see myself playing it anymore.
Not to mention the PC version if sold at full price of 60$ and it's absolutely not worth it.
Save Yourself some frustration and boredom and skip this **** or wait until it's on sale for 5$.

No Man's Sky is an ocean of content that is only as deep as a puddle.

The procedural generation engine is quite impressive and lays a great foundation for the setting, but the story fails to run with it. 3 hours in the game starts to drag and you can feel the game content stretching thin. After traveling to 10 planets, landing at a few outposts and looting around it gets repetitive.

The procedural generation engine is quite impressive and lays a great foundation for the setting, but the story fails to run with it. 3 hours in the game starts to drag and you can feel the game content stretching thin. After traveling to 10 planets, landing at a few outposts and looting around it gets repetitive. There are not enough side missions or clearly lined up tasks to drive you onward on your main mission, traveling to the center of the game.

Technically speaking the PC launch was about as bad as it can get. To start you off the title screen experiences frame drops as "No Man's Sky" flys towards you which leaves a bad impression. After the game starts up you can expect massive fps drops to the single digits when, turning too quick, transitioning from space to atmosphere, loading in the next procedural landscape while flying, and many other times. When there weren't massive fps drops my fps held stable around 140 with everything on High/Ultra at 1080p. Once there a few patches I have faith that the fps can be salvaged and be stable, but it is in embarrassing condition for a launch of a $60.00 game with so many delays.

Visually the art style and design is very interesting and creative. Every planet you land on has a different color pallet with unique shapes, landscapes, and creatures. Unfortunately the game does not portray these visuals efficiently. It feels like the game was ported directly from PS4 as the graphics are almost identical. 1080p with all settings on High/Ultra looks like it is 720p on Low settings. There are no options to change render distance so you will see jarring pop-in textures. FOV is capped at 100 so you have to edit files in the game folder to get it higher. With all the potential that there is to push PCs to the limit he graphics just look disappointing. Missed opportunity to make up for other downfalls.

No Man's Sky is great step forward for procedural generation in video games, but that's about it. It feels like a tech demo that they forgot to add a game to. This is an experience not a game. If you have some free time to kill and want to wander infinite landscapes just basking in the beauty of alien evolution then No Man's Sky is right for you. If you wanted a video game, then keep on looking. I never expected this game to live up to hype created around it, but I also never expected it to fall so short of being good at all.

In its current state the game is worth $30.00 at most. If you're reading this you should wait until it goes on sale for $20.

No multiplayer, quite repetitive, and not really worth "exploring" since most planets follow the same basic concepts. There's no really a sense of awe when you reach a planet after the first couple of days playing, since you will instantly think "oh, it's this pattern again". I give it a 4 because it's actualy fun for a weekend, I might have given it a 5-6 if it was worth 20 bucks instead of 60...

This game simply isn't worth 60 bucks because the only thing that will keep you going for a couple more hours is the constant gathering of resources. Planet discovery will get boring after a couple hours, you simply dont really care about most of the planets anymore because there is always the same to do. Dont spent 60 bucks on this people.

    Pro :
    - Endless Universe to explore
    - Immersive Environment and just something new

    Cons :
    - Lack of Content (The game is about 2.5gb big as download file which doesn't change once installed - so you find out quite fast that this Game really doesn't offer that much of a variety.
    - Aliens look similar
    - After 5 hours you saw almost all ships you can get/buy, they only differ in upgrades, style and price
    - The "uploading" feature doesn't do anything besides give you credits. If you deny firewall access to this Game you can upload everything again after restarting the Game. It doesn't really upload anything, they could've named it "claim for discover" rather than upload.
    - Graphics are just terrible, just take a look at the ground it looks like someone threw up on the ground and was too lazy to clean it up
    - Plants, Rocks, Planets itself look almost same, just color difference
    - Biggest problem : Inventory size, you find yourself collecting stuff from loot boxes, yeah and then surprise they don't stack. You ship is full in the first 20min, so is your suit inventory. I found myself running around for like almost an hour before i could fix my starter ship to get off the planet.
    - The handling of the ship is terrible, you dont really want to use a and d otherwise you find yourself spinning like crazy.
    - Running feels like walking, walking feels like slow motion
-You can't even use the word "optimized" because it is just not. It's 30 fps capped upon first launch with low settings along side. I got a pretty decent pc and i face freezes, fps issues and bugged textures all over the place.

So in comparison this Game looks to me like an unfinished Tech preview of the Game. If you play it for like 2 hours you will ask yourself - "is that really it". This Game is just not finally done, but sadly it is. You can even harvest plants. You must shoot everything with your lazer which overheats like an cpu without cooling.

Full price worth? No definitely not, not even half price is worth. 15-25€ seems okay but still not fair for an 2016 Game which was hyped so hard.

Wait for an price cut, or get a pirated version since this Game (and the whole development) doesn't deserve this money. They first advertised this Game as mmo-based multiplayer which got played down and finally simply just edited in steam as "singleplayer".

Please, i hope they don't ever create a Game again.

Now you can tell me the developer is a visionary. That this game is a work of art. The music, the colors, etc. That this game will spawn a wave of similar games based on the idea of procedurally generated whatever. But I can tell you this. This is a video game. And gamers are not artists, they are not intellectual wine drinkers. They want the game to work. They want gameplay, they want simple things.

    TL:DR

I'm 'currently' not recommending NMS, for many reasons. Its obviously missing alot of content that was promised, or shown. This is probably due to wanting to meet the launch window, its currently very glitchy with many bugs, missing features and frustrating elements that don't work well. I will adjust this review as the game is patched and fixed into what Hello Games sold us on.

This is probably due to wanting to meet the launch window, its currently very glitchy with many bugs, missing features and frustrating elements that don't work well. I will adjust this review as the game is patched and fixed into what Hello Games sold us on.

Okay, now if your continuing to read beyond this part. This is the reasons for the not recommended review and a challenge to Hello Games to fix and present the game that was promised, because clearly this isn't it - so many features are broken, or missing.

Currently, one of the common phrases going around is the "Mile Wide, Inch deep" and honestly, that really does sum it up nicely, the current game is basically mining resources, find a better ships, learn words and discover new species -thats it. The problems is that currently after a while, the shine and surpise of discovering new worlds and new species wears thin and gets boring, especially when glitches and issues appear which prevent you from doing that.

One of the most common problems when discovering species is always that one single creature which seems to never appear or is perhaps just one creature on the entire planet and no matter how long you look, where you look - you just never find it. You could look in the skies, oceans or caves and still never find them, Essentially several options need to be considered such as specific tracking tech that displays all nearby creatures, or tech that can give you an idea where to look. Better creature tracking features needs to be implemented overall, the reward for discovering all the creatures needs to be adjusted, spending hours aimlessly wandering around trying to find that one single elusive species for a few hundred thousand units is simply a waste of time and aggravation.

The planets themselves are often bugged with combinations that would not exist in nature, I feel this is simply a bug with the procedural engine, a prime example here is landing on a tropical jungle planet thats hot and wet, but plagued with occasionally -120C ice storms.....I mean okay???? Am I missing something here? Scanning is often broken and doesn't pick up ? locations even when you fly directly over them. There is no plantary map here, the developers didn't want to add this feature for some reason - honestly, the game could benefit from it.

Space feels so underwhelming right now, where are the space battles? Everything feels rushed, with many simple things are missing like the ability to look around the cockpit, how about scanning asteroids to find out what materials they have? How about being able to scan other ships? The list here is nearly endless of what feels like is missing. Space Combat feels clunky, mostly involves you travelling from one planet to another and then being intercepted by pirates who you 'have' to kill before you're allowed to go back to travelling, without any varation of weapons, no missiles or really any defensive systems - its all very basic.

I'd like to see alot more of everything - more interesting locations, discovering special places of interest, anomalies and better combat. Right now, on planets shooting sentinels gets old, how about aggressive aliens or other aggressive advanced species? Tech is the same, you can find all the tech far too fast because simply put, there just isn't enough of it, it needs more, much much more.

Finally, for an exploration game - its remarkably barren and quiet, planets are often practially lifeless, barren husks with nothing to do except fly around from outpost to outpost, mine some resources when your low on fuel. I feel like the game was practically bait and switched with something that almost looks like NMS, but isn't the same game we saw at E3 or videos - perhaps we was all victims of massive hype? The same Sega did with Aliens: Colonial Marines?

    + Explorers dream
+ Ability to go anywhere seamlessly
+ Discover and name almost anything you find
+ Interesting gameplay, you never know what you'll discover next

    - Broken and missing elements
    - Many bugs and glitches, some gamebreaking
    - No maps or limited tracking features
    - Too hard to find elusive creatures to finish the planets journal
    - Space feels empty and a waste of 'space'
    - Planets sometimes are bugged
    - gets boring after visting the same cookie cutter buildings over and over

Now, while before I said it was recommended, but not quite for everyone, not it is a much more “universal” recommended game. Some people will love it, others will find it a nice game. But its no longer a “love it or find it ultra boring” it was before.

The original game was a simplistic, wide-as-the-universe, shallow-as-a-puddle world exploring and screenshot generator. It was fun for about 30-100hours, and after some 30 hours, you’d have seen nearly all the game could offer. Fantastically beautiful vistas could be found, but were rare (was they should be) so you’d get a few jaw-dropping moments every now and then.
For instance, landed my ship on a new planet, got off the ship, and immediately a giant foot came from the sky and landed in front of me – a bipedal, t-rex style dinosaur over 7m tall was just about on top of me.

Then came the big updates. One added bases (which could be shared), and what fun that was.
Another added vehicles. While you could see some 90% of what a planet would offer in a 300 meter radius of your landing spot, vehicles were fun. Could easily do some long range farming expeditions to re-top off your stores.

Then came Atlas Rises. That improved the terrain generation massively. Suddenly, planets had a couple or a trio of biomes. Not radically different, but the visual difference between them was enough to give it a more “alive” feel. No longer the planets were uniformly covered in grass, now they would have sections with and without grass. Some sections with and without trees. It just felt “better”. Base building, farming, trading and item manufacturing got overhauld, made very complex, so you could have a lot of fun discovering just HOW to get a very profitable base going to make units to buy a freighter, or to get that awesome new exotic ship.

    And now… NEXT.
NEXT is just… amazing. Everything from the ground up has been re-designed and updated. The core cycle is the same (farm to recharge equipment, farm to get elements to create other elements to create technology to sell), but is massively improved and complex.
Planet generation has been made jaw-droppingly good. While this might sound odd, we now have CONTINENTS on the planets. This simple change means the planets are no longer uniform wherever you land. They have a “planet” feel. You can land on a small island and explore, take off and explore coastal areas, then do it again and explore more inland. True, the things you find are somewhat the same in all three places, but the terrain is radically diferent. Its amazing to just walk around and LOOK.
-You have realistic HUGE mountains (where before you had rolling terrain), valleys, proper oceans.
-Planet appearance from orbit now very closely matches what you find on the ground (originally it was a crapshoot, after Atlas Rises it was better, but still note quite).
-Space stations now “feel” lived in, and used. It looks and feels like an airport terminal (as they should).
    - You have abandoned space stations, that “feel” abandoned.
    -Ringed planets
    -Actual clouds that cast shadows

    And much, MUCH more.
While the above look like small things, added together they just add immensely to the “feel” of the game, the immersion. It just FEELS like you’re on actual, alien planets. Its just that – NEXT added the correct FEEL to the exploration game. If have this odd urge to go climb that mountain on the horizon, just because. Its enormous, it pokes out from the surrounding terrain, I want to see it. I will build a vehicle to get there, but first get mats. And this way, I use up a very enjoyable afternoon.

Of course, you still have the much-touted multiplayer, but even without that – Even if it did NOT have multiplayer, it would be awesome. With multiplayer, you can finally share the amazing things you find with someone.

The original was just a sandbox – with no direction except towards the center. Atlas patch (and then NEXT) gave the game direction. Many directions. Explore, trade, farm, build bases…

So you grind, fly, grind, fly. Nothing to explore. Really.

Secondly, you play for about an hour, and then you must restart the game, because at 5 fps it's unplayable.

PS: this game not worth it's price.

The space flight is extremely arcadey, even beyond what I expected based on the trailers and dev talks. There's no real depth to it at all, nor any significant reason to do so beyond gathering some resources or traveling.

Planetary exploration should be somewhat exciting, and was, for the first few planets, before I realized that every planet basically had every resource available, and the only substantial difference was visual. Even then, the planets rapidly starting looking the same. Outposts consist of the same few objects regardless of what alien race occupies them.

    Stations are boring.

Inventory management and user interface is both tedious and awkward.

At some point, with a lot of feature patches and quality of life improvements, this game might be worth buying. Right now it's certainly not worth the $60 price tag. At best it's a $15 Early Access title.

The game isn't optimized for PC, the core game-play is repetitive and mechanics tiresome.

You have seen everything. I can get a classic linear game such as Tombraider and there I can actually see and explore more things than in this game. Grinding down "quintilllions" of rather similar planets to mine resources simply is not fun. Also, some people complain "a lot of people expect the game to be something..that isn't'". Point is, for a whopping €60-€70 I do INDEED have a tons expectations on a game. For the same price I can get countless other games with immersive worlds and an incredible amount to see and to do...example again the latest iteration of Tombraider (or, just picking something randomly, FarCry 3 or FarCry 4) where the crafting and collection aspect alone is far better implemented, YET only a small part of a game. Planets are all the same, oh except this one is hot, and this one is cold, and this one is poisonous, and this one is radioactive. So your life support systems break down in the same way, and you repair them in the same way, its just the 'color' of the hazard that changes. Why are no planets completely gas planets without a surface? Or complete water worlds? They're all the same, just painted with different palettes, with the same sporadic appearance of flora + fauna. Want to land your spaceship? Go find some plutonium, rinse repeat. With this kind of 'cost' of travel, you'll quickly find yourself deciding against landing your spaceship and exploring because you really don't want to wander around looking for plutonium again.

The alien races you encounter are dull, and they all just seem to be sitting wherever they are, waiting for you. The main 'questline' has you warping to and fro so often that all you really want to look for is the ingredients you need to make warp cells. Your catalog of stars, planets, life, rocks that you discover is completely meaningless. You're not given any context for your discoveries except for "you've found 64% of the weird **** on this planet!" That sums the game up perfectly.

To start off, I bought the game on steam and hour before release, and was able to download it right away when it launched, and play it with no issue/crashed from start after changing my resolution and graphical settings.

So, game played for me, but I still get huge FPS drops, stuttering/hitching every few minutes, and massive pop in all the time, even on a good PC, even on lowest settings.

Graphically and performance wise this game is a joke, pop in for EVERYTHING, all the time, bad performance even on a great PC, and visually and sound wise just not good.

Gameplay, there is none. You mine, you go to next spot and "talk" to an alien with one small line of "story", leave the planet, and repeat.
There is nothing to do, no gameplay at all pretty much.

For a game that advertised the hell out of it's creature and planet generator algorithms, the building, items, and just stuff you interact with is all cut and paste copies of the same 2-4 assets, always arranged the same way.

Great idea, good art assets and style, JUST NOT ENOUGH.

$60 for this game is a Fing joke, even $30 would have been too much, there are indie games for $15-30 that offer far more than this for far less. Look up Subnatica and Elite Dangerous, those are 2 off the top of my head that were well received, and cost less than $30 for WAY more content and gameplay than this game, and look 1000x better.

It feels like the devs just either ran out of money, or rushed to release to finally get the game out, just way too early.

I was never hyped for the game, only saw it at E3 and bought it yesterday, if i waited 3+ years for this I would either be pissed, or in denial right about now, it's not a awful game...but no where near a great one either.

    EDIT ADD ON:
Also, because I forgot to mention it before and am only doing so because of 10/10 reviews here of people saying the devs never lied and people are just upset they don't like the game... people seem to forget how the devs legitimately lied to everyone right up until the game released saying ti was a multiplayer game and you could see other people in game, then the day before release 'clarified" that it was single player only.

Minecraft, meanwhile, actually does have multiplayer down to dedicated servers and we're going on the sixth (or so) year of free updates, while Sean Murray has already mentioned paid DLC for No Man's Sky.

Both of these games were completed at least a year before development on No Man's Sky even began. While the game has a very attractive visual style, gameplay ages quickly and dies sooner than the most banal 90s first-person shooter. To reward your efforts, the ending is an unironic next-decade version of Spore's, with a little bit more Arthur C. Clarke and a little less Douglas Adams.

This is not even getting into the massive technical problems that the launch is currently having, even on the most common hardware (hangups on 970s with modern drivers surely could have been foreseen even by an indie developer). The game deserves no more than a 2/10 and you should pay no more than 2/10 of the launch price for it.

I've had quite an emotional roller-coaster ride with this game. From feeling pure delight, boredom, then disgust and now having rather somber afterthoughts.

I enjoyed exploring my first few planets and naming my first few critters very much. Swimming, diving, jetpacking, spellunking and all that. At one point I climbed a mountain at sunrise and said to myself "this is the most beautiful view ever, what a game!"

I actually like the look of the game and I had great fun on the night of release.

Sadly, after exploring twenty more planets with different but somehow familiar looking creatures on them and appreciating the beautiful but similar vistas, I found the exploring part less and less thrilling. Not good when this game is all about exploring.

The game generously offers a gozillion worlds of this boring dejá-vu adventuring. Guess you could slog on for a while and end up with the meanest ship in the galaxy (and the biggest exosuit). But what's the point of that? In the end there is not much else to do...

The crafting, isnt it challenging or rewarding? Not pretty much so! Just collect, build and install upgrades that in many cases doesn't do squadoosh.

Compelling characters and interesting, scary or funny alien encounters? Nioerp! (Gek word)
Aliens and their culutures are fairly well done and they look ok, but posess no personality whatsoever. Furthermore there are only three species (and you) in the entire universe. What!?
(Now I will go into a bit of rant.)

Hey, how about "procedurally" (very fancy coding only known since the sixties), generate aliens instead?
No, that won't work, it'll still be the same old aliens' bodyparts combined in bizarre ways,
"Too very scarey that, we'll only be that cruel to the animals and plants." - Hello Games

You should always look ahead, so perhaps in the distant future this game after patches and DLCs, will be more entertaining. We will see, but it's unlikely that I ever will consider NMS a great game.

For now it's massively overhyped and overpriced.
I'm more than a wee bit disappointed, so giving it a 5 score feels generous.

I don't know what it is about this game but despite the simplistic play style and overly repetitive worlds I can't not play it. I go to play other games and with in 20 minutes I'm back on No Man's Sky trying to find something new I suppose. There is a rush when you actually find or see something cool, and I feel like a lot of bad remarks come from people simply not knowing all you can do in the game. For example those pods with lasers spewing out of them towards the sky; if you create a by pass chip they'll give you way points to various things, from extra inventory slots to bits of lore. This game really needs some more content however and hopefully with in a year we'll be looking at a totally different game. I would personally like to see some sort of terra-forming and base creation, as well a better map and ways to connect to other players. Think of it as a mine craft where you're attached to the entire world and other people can land on a planet you've been too and gaze at structures you built. In addition perhaps some RPG elements could really help this game out, the ability to truly have different classes, a real in game economy, and some actual affiliation with different groups. Even making this into a 3D version of the palm classic Space Trader would be great. Ultimately this is a good foundation that could with a lot of work be made into something incredible.

On the technical side of things, simply editing the max FPS rate and turning off v-sync fixed all my performance issues. It is not a breathtakingly stunning game either, but if they added more content that wouldn't matter. Music isn't that spectacular either.

For now I will continue to play and enjoy this game myself as I let my imagination run wild, but I will not recommend this game to anyone. Perhaps for around $15 bucks I'd say, "Yeah if you have every other game around 15 bucks and you need to buy something." I hope to be able to amend this review in a few months time.

Don't buy this game. Save your money for whatever game you also consider buying!

I have zero interest in playing a 3D version of Starbound, only limited to Single-Player, after I finished Starbound.

Starbound was a very good game, and I really enjoyed it by being able to play cooperatively, though as with NMS, the similar procedurally generated ai, mobs, planets, environments were a bit bleh...but the only way I could see myself playing NMS is "IF" it actually had

Other than that, it is truly a lonely game of isolation and exploration, which again, I already did with Starbound. . .but was actually to occasionally play cooperatively and mission run cooperatively.

I've come back to this game numerous times. In the end - the combat is lame, the complete grindfest gets real old everytime - oh i'm out of warp fuel, go farm more. Oh, go that way 15mins, do this and return. FUN! >.< The graphics are unimpressive, the story.... not sure really wth its going. Shame.

Don't mind me, I'm just here to change my review from a 3 to a 10 to give the overall score a lil boost and to show my support to the devs.

The last time a studio put that much efforts to bring major updates to a game was Rainbow Six Siege.

Boring and repetitive gameplay, no gravity difference between a moon and a planet.
    Horrific interface and menus.
4/10 instead of 0 cause i like the idea, but this is more like a tech demo than a real game.

Beware of reviews from the old version of the game!!

The game on launch 2 years ago was rocky, to say the least. It a put of people of people off from trying the game since. Which is a shame, as the subsequent updates added a lot to the game, and refined much of the gameplay. Now the 'NEXT' update has landed, the biggest one yet, it overhauls a lot of gameplay that people weren't

One of the best games I've played!

Pretentious, disappointing, grindfest, waste of time, waste of money. This game was dead since release date, no idea, why someone's still suffering playing it in 2k20...

No Man's Sky breaks the record in falling short of the hype – which is an incredible achievement in the category of super ambitious space games. The huge universe is a repetitive, lifeless and meaningless place, no amount of random generated creatures can change that. The most unforgivable fail is making the spaceship such a pain to fly, which makes exploring the vast universe simply a chore. However, at its best the game is epic and many of the issues should be easy to fix, so this might not be the end of the journey after all. [Sept 2016]

It's partially broken, shallow, repetitive and aimless, but hang me, I still kind of love it. [Issue#255, p.56]

While some poorly designed systems and mechanics chip away at your patience, the feeling of flying seamlessly from space down to a peninsula you spotted from orbit never fails to enthrall. [Nov 2016, p.106]
